The Adelphi Hotel is a historic gem located in the heart of Liverpool, celebrated for its grand architecture and vibrant ambiance. Guests often praise its excellent location which provides easy access to nearby attractions, shopping, and dining options. The hotel features beautiful communal areas, adding to its charm and character.

Many visitors appreciated the friendly and helpful staff, with specific mentions of individuals who made their stay memorable. The hotel is great for hosting events, with spacious halls and adequate facilities for large gatherings.

However, reviews indicate that the hotel has significant room for improvement. Common complaints include:

  • Outdated accommodations: Numerous guests reported that the rooms are in dire need of refurbishment, with issues like worn furniture, poorly maintained bathrooms, and general cleanliness concerns.
  • Poor management and service: Mixed experiences with staff, ranging from helpful to indifferent, and slow check-in processes have been noted.
  • Food quality: The quality and temperature of meals have been a recurring issue, with many patrons stating that food served was often lukewarm and lacking variety.
  • Lifts and maintenance: Guests frequently mentioned the inadequacy of the lift system, with long wait times and malfunctions affecting their overall convenience.

In conclusion, the Adelphi Hotel boasts a unique historical allure alongside a prime location, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers willing to overlook some flaws. As renovations begin, many hope to see improvements that match its magnificent exterior.

Adelphi Hotel: Opinions

Negative experience: Very Poor customer service. I catered for a wedding at this hotel. When the event was over, my staff brought out the chaffing dishes and two coolers in front of the hotel while I left to get my car to load them on. I got back and noticed that one cooler was missing. I reported it to the reception to check the CCTV footage to investigate it. After much back and forth, I was told they saw a footage of my staff bringing out two coolers and the next footage was us loading only one cooler in the car. I don’t understand how you saw two coolers being brought out and one cooler being loaded but saw nothing in-between to explain how one got missing. I still don’t have any answers on how my cooler was stolen and I am very unhappy with how they handled this.

Negative experience: The only redeeming part of this hotel is its location. Even though the interior looks grand and unique, it’s very run down and still smells of that 60s/70s smoke and booze. It seems like a lottery when it comes to getting a room here. With mixed reviews, you could end up with something slightly renovated or clean, or something not touched in decades. We got the latter, and it was pretty disgusting. There were clearly cracks and mould issues in the bathroom, and the carpet in the room was so dirty I didn’t even want to take my shoes off in there. There were some shady characters in and out of the building at night and security ended up following people up to the floors. Not sure if that should make me feel any safer or not.

Negative experience: The Adelphi Hotel is a beautiful old hotel which iif managed properly could be the best in Liverpool with all its charm and history staying there for 4 days the reception area could have done with some seating area as on arrival we had to wait nearly 25 minutes for lifts which were very small and only having 2 in such a huge hotel the breakfast were ok but no cups available if you didn't go early and food was just warm evening meals were always just luke warm with not much choice only a choice of tea or coffee and water to drink with you meal the rooms are good and roomy but are in need of a good clean such a wonderful building with lots of character but in desperate need of good management

Positive experience: Been using the Adelphi on and off over the years. For the first time it seems to be well managed. I met Michael the GM who was so helpful and customer focused. What a breath of fresh air for the Adelphi. I can now sincerely recommend.

Negative experience: The hotel is in poor health. Lac of staff. Food Luke warm and poor choices . Room is still in Victorian times. Carpets never seen a hover in years. Wifi very poor. Acoustics when there is a function keep residents awake. Bar staff close up before time making people unwelcome. This place could be so great but there does not seem the will to make it happen.

Fantastic experience: Great place to hold large organizational event. Big hall and clean toilets and excellent customer service support.

Negative experience: We always accepted that the rooms were a little tired, but this visit took it to an all time low. The room was disgraceful, and I would be ashamed to think that foreign visitors may think that this is acceptable in England. See photos for the state of the room (456). Turned the kettle on at 07:30 and still hadn’t boiled when we left at 09:10.

Negative experience: Hate to leave a negative Review but I have to say ......Avoid at all cost ! ....Dreadful .... I mean Unbelievably Bad, The worst hotel I have ever stayed in, I know this sounds terrible but my dogs kennel is cleaner, The bathroom was so dirty I choose to use the facilities in the pub across the street, the general disrepair is dreadful but the dirt is worse, sticky carpets, pealing wallpaper, hair filled pug holes, filthy windows, the stench from the toilets would knock you over. See images below.

Negative experience: It may look the cream of the crop but it's not. Customer service doesn't even happen here. Had a booking cancelled by 3rd party a few hours before arrival at hotel. Not hotel fault il admit but when tried to amend it did not care. Left my son (13yrs) old and myself literally stranded at 7am on a Saturday morning with no hotel, no room after travelling all night, no care or no consideration. When I tried and offered to pay for a room again as money was already taken by 3rd party and not refunded hotel refused. Wasn't asking for a free room was asking for a room that had been previously booked by me a few hours before hand but cancelled. Offered no help. Was told 'noting could be done'. I had the resources thankfully to provide for my son and myself else where but if we didn't this hotel didn't not care and didn't. I would only hope that no one would be in my situation and didn't have the resources because you where on the street. After talking to people about my experience it has become common knowledge that this hotel only cares about the money and not the customer. I would not recommend here for any reason as much to say I'd stay on the street before I'd have to stay there. That's how badly I was treated. The hotel is like a bad 1 night stand. Looks good at first but when you get up close to it you see what it really is. Shocking.

Positive experience: I stayed here for the first time in 2015 and the place was a mess. My room back then was worn down, grubby and cold. Fast forward 10 years to January 2025 and the place has greatly changed for the better. Now, let's be clear. If you are expecting modern and polished, this isn't the place for you. But that is the best part which I love about here. The wonderful architecture, beautiful high ceilings and much improved rooms that have been renovated make a stay here now worth every penny. My stay was a Friday and the rates were very good. Check in was quick and easy. Once I got up to my room, I was blown away. Everything was perfect but also in keeping with the traditional and original feel of the venue. Shower pressure was great and the bed was super comfy. Sadly, I had to check out around 9am so didn't get to fully enjoy a sleep in. The main ball room and décor is something to behold. It's like taking a step back in time. Again, vast improvements have been made since my 2015 stay. What I like most about staying here was the feel and vibe of the place. It feel a little bit like stepping back into the 1950s. Having a wedding or function here would be sublime.

Negative experience: Stopped here for two nights over the weekend, knew a small amount about the history of the place and the foyer and hall areas were fitting to this. Upon entering our room we were not happy with the amenities at all, two single bed mattresses atop of a double bed frame, no light in the bedroom only a lamp in the corner, dirty floors under and around the bed, stained towels and general grime. Fluffy miscellaneous filth in the bath tub (hair maybe?). I can place the fault of the ice cold bedroom only the buildings age but lack of spare sheets and extra blankets wouldn’t have gone a miss. They allow pets, which weren’t phased about until a very unhappy dog would bark throughout our stay. Should there perhaps be a pet friendly floor? Due to the state of our room I don’t feel they are cleaned thoroughly enough for those who don’t want a room previously occupied by a pet. Very disappointed with our stay here, the Adelphi has a very bad reputation from what I have heard and this has all but confirmed those conversations. A plus would be the room was so un-inviting that we wanted to spent as much time in the beautiful city as possible, so thanks i guess?

Fantastic experience: We stayed here Friday 14th February 2025 with a Caledonian holidays trip. We have stayed a few times before & definitely noticed some improvements have taken place. We had no issues checking in & staff were friendly & polite. It smells like an old building, but IT IS an old building! Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice - all hot & tasty. Our room was just fine for a 1 night stay although a little chilly. Bed was very comfortable & toiletries were provided as were tea & coffee. Great location - central to everything. Security staff were checking that people had room keys at night which was reassuring as quite a few homeless people were hanging around. All in all a lovely stay. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay again :)

Negative experience: There were silverfish in the bathroom. Bitten by a bed bug, the whole place stunk, water from tap was cloudy, pillows were like rock, there was no soap, the bed was awful and I would never stay here again. (Honest review from my daughter)

Negative experience: Beautifull grand building, I could picture horse and carriages picking people up at the grand entrance. Breakfast, lovely. Staff, friendly. Room, terrible, paid £155 for 1 night curtains swaying with draught from old windows, mold, broken bed, light and lamp didn't work, filthy around light switches, door frames, plaster falling off walls, hole been filled in bottom of bathroom door. Smelt musty/damp, carpet dirty. Stayed in much better £50 b&b in blackpool. So disappointed as paid more thinking we would be having a luxury stay, would not recommend or stay again, I even video the room to show friends as I was that shocked.

Negative experience: Where to start,,,,,, Double room booked for 2 nights, arrived at the hotel only to be denied admission! My daughter & her boyfriend had been looking forward to a weekend of shopping, site seeing, museums, ect,,, because SHE didn't have any ID with her (they're 18 & 19) the very unhelpful staff at the Adelphi refused to give them the room which had been paid for even though daughters boyfriend DID show them ID, they were then refused a refund leaving them both sat outside a hotel in a strange city with no idea where to go! Fortunately I was able to book them accommodation at another hotel (The Tune) where the staff were very helpful. I could have understood the Adelphi refusing them access if they had rolled up intoxicated, in a large rowdy group, or were underage. However to leave a polite young couple with no assistance whatsoever, to refuse to refund their money, and basically leave them stranded is totally unacceptable! This hotel doesn't have the best reviews, I can understand why! While I couldn't possibly comment on the condition of the rooms, food, ect,,, I can certainly say the staff at this hotel are worse than useless, definitely wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!

Negative experience: We were booked in on 27th December 2024 for a wedding the room seemed like staff quarters but we were told we would be changing rooms after two days, I went to have a bath and there was nothing to clean it with so I used shower gel, it was not until I got in the bath that I noticed false nails on the side of the bath and at the end of the bath, I was far from happy so I went to complain, when I told the man at reception the bathroom had not been cleaned he told me, we clean the room after you check out. When I told him i only checked in the night before he looked at hos computer and confirmed that the room had not been cleaned which left me feeling sick because there was a very good chance were slept in a used bed. When we spoke to.the manager the next day as we had to pay for an extra day she was good enough to compensate us in the way of wavering the late checkout fee and gave us a complimentary breakfast. But there is no chance we will ever stay there again there were a lot of complaints while we were there especially about the room keys that would stop working on a regular basis meaning a along trip back to reception to have the key recoded. It's a shame that it has turned like this.

Negative experience: Unfortunately this review is not good. This time staying at the Adelphi was the worse experience we had, We had an Executive room M15 the room was not cleaned never mind checked, there was cigarette tips on the tea tray, there was no towels at all. The bed was unacceptable. They handed me a card key to look at another room they didnt take me to see it unbelievable. The next day they moved us into another Executive room on 2nd floor, which was far better, the only thing was we only had 2 tea-bags to last for 3 days. So we managed to speak to one of the cleaners but she expressed to me she was too busy we only asked for tea-bags didn't even get a chance to say thanku she practically threw them in my hand and saying she's too busy. She was rude & unpolite. It's actually put me off staying there now. All we got off the manager was he's sorry. We were definitely not happy with our stay this time.

Fantastic experience: Located in the heart of Liverpool Service staff was really nice after a rough previous acomodation as well as helpful throughout our check in process. Price wise it's not super expensive when compared to other hotels in the area. Rooms wise we had found a small issue but we where transfered to a new room within the hour.

Positive experience: Stepping into the Adelphi Hotel is like taking a step back in time. If you appreciate history and the charm of old, grand buildings, this place is a real gem and you will appreciate it. They don't make them like this anymore. Despite some signs of wear; like peeling paint and damp marks here and there, the hotel’s history and beauty still shine through. It’s stunning in its own way, with its vintage features and faded grandeur that evoke a sense of nostalgia for the guests of the past—famous or not. There’s a slightly spooky feel to the place, which just adds to its character. However, it’s clear that the hotel is understaffed. The check in isn't very efficient and took a while, although check in staff were nice, friendly and welcoming and are clearly trying their best. Cleaning staff seemed sparse, a hotel of this size should have cleaners working around the clock but we didn't see any. Some hotel staff walk around without offering any friendly greetings or smiles, which is a bit disappointing. For 42 pounds I can say I would absolutely stay again, it is good value and we really love the old worldly feel to the place so it suited us. Plenty of toiletries, ironing board, fan, plenty of tea and coffee and milks. Television worked fine. Bedding and bed comfy and clean. If you can look past the imperfections and focus on the hotel’s history, charm, and unique atmosphere, it’s worth a visit. The Adelphi is a place for those who appreciate the past and don’t mind a little history in the air.

Positive experience: I was allocared an unmade up room, not a good start. I was allocated another room that was OK. The hotel.is very large and the car park is a walk away from.the hotel. Jim Sutton 9 months ago

Negative experience: This place was something back in the day, today it is a case study in what happens when the staff take no pride in where they work. Upon arriving you notice a sleeping bag on the stoop outside just off the outside stairs that makes it appear that a homeless person has spent the night. The lobby is quite nice (and apparently has been used as a location for movies and television shows) but the revolving door was not working and one of the swinging doors will not close so the lobby is the same temperature as outside (7C when we where there). Got talked into the 25 £ upgrade that would give us breakfast and WiFi (wait, what? WiFi isn’t included? In this day and age?!). The room was quite a bit smaller than I expected. If you look on the floor plan (in the pictures) you can see that the majority of the rooms are smaller than the big suite that seems to make it into the pictures. One of these days reservation websites will include the floor plan (with dimensions) of the actual room you have reserved. The WiFi was unusable. There were no networks visible from the room to connect to. I noticed Ubiquiti access points mounted in the hallway every 30 feet or so so I stood underneath a bunch of them and still couldn’t see a Wifi connection (so I assume they were unpowered) until I stood under the access points in the hallway in the very back of the building (too many walls between them and our room to be able to connect). I returned to the front desk to report this and the staff member supplies me with a new “special” password that he tells me will work. My explanation of dead access points and and how if you can’t see a network the password is useless fell on deaf ears. While I was at the front desk two older ladies came up to complain that there room was cold and were told the heat was on a timer and the heat would come on later. They said the heat was on yesterday at this time. The desk clerk didn’t offer to have maintenance look into it or any other solution, just dismissed them. (I suspect the housekeeping staff turn the heat down when they visit a room as I found our thermostat turned all the way down when we arrived and the heat was fine which makes the “timer” answer less than credible). I returned to the room and tried the WiFi again (why I don’t know) and had no luck. I gave up and tried to turn the TV on and fund the batteries in the remote were both dead. Frustrated I returned to the front desk to ask for my 25 £ back as the WiFi was unusable and told that a Manager would have to approve that and there would be no Manager in until the morning. Every surface I looked at needed to be either cleaned or painted. The lamps on the side tables in the room were all discoloured around their bases (see pictures). The bathroom had been refurbished with some plastic panelling that looked nice enough but appeared to have been measured and caulked by a blind man (see pictures) with large gaps everywhere. There was a large hole in the bathroom wall where the door handle had hit it (this is why you install door stops). A patch had been installed behind the toilet that didn’t match the rest of the panelling. The toilet was fastened to the floor with only one screw (out of four holes). The back of the TV was covered in dust (see pictures) Mismatched screws on door handles The plastic panel on the lights in the elevator was filthy and filled with loose material. In the restaurant the next morning our table was dirty (the decorative edge was filled with something – see the picture). The coffee machine had a handwritten sign on it saying it was out of order and to use the machine on the other side of the room. If the machine doesn’t work, pull it off the counter and put it in the back so the repair person can work on it or at least put a more professional looking sign on it. The appearance of one of the bus boys summed up the whole place with his tie pulled down to his 3rd button, his vest unbuttoned and his shirt looking like he slept in it.

Negative experience: Came on family trip for beatles and Xmas shopping. This place is a central great location , then you walk in it would have been a very grand hotel once upon a time, but looks like it hasn't been updated since the 80s . Got to our room which was double very dated old wallpaper peeled away from wall which seemed just painted over, bathroom was small, taps moved when used shower to taps and holes in walls that had been filled I. With black filler. Lifts where horrendous waiting and always full. There were alot of disabled people that struggled to get about and all steps and no ramps alot had to just stay around same area as to hard to get around . Food was terrible basic and cold massive ques, everyone complain never heard a good word said. Staff where quite blunt and it didn't feel welcoming at all. It's such a shame about the whole experience as it could be such a great place if it was refurbished. I'm afraid the only positive I can say is the location , and the people I went with which made the stay.

Positive experience: Looks art deco and has character Also has big rooms and the shower had hot water. However rooms have a feel of Romania in 1964. No decorations, TV slightly bigger than a stamp, no hairdryer and pay for WiFi if you use more than a moment. Was fine as long as you went out. To be fair I did that so the bar etc could have been great i just didn't check

Negative experience: Don't come here, ever! It's good location and art decor appearance hides a horror show. The room was a twin room but my bed was only 32" wide, it was like sleeping on a plank, both mayteresses were horrible and lumpy. The bathroom suite wasn't even from this century, the toilet kept running, so constantly filling, then it stopped flushing, which I took the cistern cover off to play with the mechanism. There is a constant odour throughout the hotel which my wife hated. There was only 1 lift working for a 6 floor Hotel, it took a few waits for a next available lift...the carpark is an old waste ground with pot holes everywhere, all for £13 for 24 hours, whereas Mount Pleasant carpark is across the road for £5/24 hours, but no lift. Its multi storey, loads of spaces. Other residents commented in the lift "chatter" saying it was the worst ever hotel they had stayed in, one guy saw 2 x rats running down the corridor towards the breakfast room, in front of a staff member...

Negative experience: Never again..this was our second visit in 7 years..last time it was excellent..7 years ago..how the UK has now changed..our room was awful..no heating on a very cold night..window jammed slightly open..no shower..only a bath with rusty handle.. The mattress and the two pillows were as hard as concrete.. In the bathroom white plastic cable trunking was all around the floor.. Outside we were greeted by a homeless man lying against the entrance wall..as we waited for a taxi at the entrance..3 very drunk and untidy men all speaking foreign language appeared from inside hotel, and were asking us for money to buy alcohol..so my guess is hotel is full of asylum seekers ..or homeless Photos attached

Negative experience: Just had a two night stay as part of a Caledonian Coach Package. My room 404, on the fourth floor was lovely and warm and large. Then it goes down from there. Really poor furniture. Outdated chipboard office stuff. Bed base ages old and hession falling off from bottom underneath. TV has no TV guide built in and is loose on the wall. The table lamp on the "dresser" has a lampshade just balanced on the top of it. Not fixed at all. Carpet marked in several places. Bathroom. Paint peeling off the cracked plaster on the walls near the window. Also off the back of the door. No shower gel in the container. Rusty plug chain. Meals. Evening meal a total free for all. Food passable. Breakfast. Much more organised and really good. Excellent in fact. Wave Bar for the 2 for 1 bar offer 19.00 - 22.00. It's like they don't want anyone in. Absolutely freezing cold in there both nights. Air Con units in ceiling blowing freezing air out when it's only 2 degrees outside. Not acceptable and needs sorting out. Took our drinks to our room. Location is absolutely spot on. Great for exploring etc. Overall very average accomodation bordering on poor. £7.00 a day is absolutely ridiculous for Internet access. Should be free.

Positive experience: We stayed at The Adelphi from 11th to 13th Nov 2024 on a Caledonian Travel deal. Before travelling we had read the recent reviews and were worried about the reports of intimidation from homeless people sleeping in the doorways, urinating and using drugs. This was simply not true. We saw none of this and the entrance way to the hotel is bright and welcoming as is the security staff inside. The hotel is brightly lit with the wonderful period lighting. Yes some might describe it as dated but what do they expect from a hotel of that age. The staff work tirelessly to keep all the public area clean and tidy. We loved looking at the period features, chandeliers, statues and amazing ceiling mouldings. The food in the restaurant was hot and plentiful. The staff do not push you to buy expensively priced bottles of beer or wine to have with dinner. You can purchase a drink from the bar and take it into the restaurant with you or help yourself to water, tea or coffee at no extra charge, to accompany your meal. If I had one small complaint, it would be that the room was too warm with no way of opening a window. However there was a portable fan in the wardrobe that we made use of. The bed linen was sparkling white and we slept well. The location of the Adelphi, is fantastic to access all that Liverpool has to offer, and it is a fabulous city that we will definitely return to.

Positive experience: Hotel is a beautiful building very art deco, smell of dampness when I got out the lift but room was OK, housekeeping hadn't finished room when I arrived had to go find someone to finish the job, they are in process of doing improvements. Could be really nice if they spend the dish it needs

Fantastic experience: Very nice indeed though a little cold in the night i have no complaints at all.

Negative experience: Food is awful and it is NOT EDIBLE, Don't WASTE YOUR MONEY. And chef DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO COOK. When we both stayed in Adelphi Hotel for 3 days with Caledonian Travel. Liverpool is NICE Place for sight -seeing and food restaurants, and SHOPPING !

Richard Weaver 10 months ago

Positive experience: Great place to explore Liverpool, although the room was very basic, curtain hanging off, paint splatters all round sink, plug socket cover broken, a bit expensive for what it was, but a comfortable bed could do with 2 pillows each

Fantastic experience: Brilliant Old fashioned hotel, the picture you see was my view from the bedroom window

Positive experience: Price according to the place ,, it's a old fashion hotel ,, needs a update,, but I think they started some renovations,, location is good ,,my room was big

Andy Wynn 10 months ago

Negative experience: I wasnt expecting anything more than the 3 star hotel it is, which is sad for such a beautiful building with it rich history. Service was fine. Decor dated, badly in need of massive/tasteful renovation (no doubt expensive though!) Room - clean but was tiny (is a twin). Radiator stuck on, was sleeping in a sauna, 'sleeping' is a stretch - Breakfast - honestly, awful. Basic range (less choice than at Premier Inn), hot buffet was, er, not hot but stone cold. Sausages and Hash Browns tasted like they'd have been really nice if even luke warm. Coffee machine was broken, no sign on it just several cups of hot wataer where customers kept trying to use it... instant avaliable but was possibly the worst cup of coffee I've ever had. Bar - small, but lovely and representative of the history/building Whiskey Sour was top notch.

Negative experience: I mean i had to pay 378 for 2 people 2 dogs for 2 nights this does npt include wifi or breakfast this was from friday to sunday and now i look online and the priices are 36 again.... not impressed with that bath tap wouldnt stop running my back kills from the mattress barely anything in the room tv just about worked was wonky but appart from that the hallways and front entrance looked nice staff looked sad all the time but other people staying in hotel were lovely great invironment oh and it was supposed to be the best room available...

James Garrison 10 months ago

Negative experience: Avoid this scam of a hotel. No real wifi and and multi-hour check-in. Seriously, is it like this every single time that LFC plays? Whatever the case may be, the price gouging sucks and the place is not worth it.

Simon Devlin 10 months ago

Negative experience: Stayed on a Tuesday night for work. Beautiful building with no investment. Rooms are shockingly dated. TV doesnt work. Lifts are slow. Key card to rooms fail. One power socket. Rooms are damp. Never again

Christina Hewitt 10 months ago

Positive experience: I am a valuable customer at the adelphi was staying there alot while being homeless. In July I booked in on the Sunday and was meant to be leave on the Tuesday I was admitted into hospital on the Monday so there for u wasn't at the hotel to book out. They had charged me for smoking in the room and also charged me another night as my belongings were still there. After leaving hospital i contacted them to asks if I could collect my belongings and they told me that they couldn't be found I have since been calling them numerous of times for nearly 3 months and they still have not been found. There is 2 holdalls of clothes a coat 2 pairs of Trainers hair dryer hair straighteners makeup and a sentimental jade chain they can't be missed. They were quick enough to charge me for smoking and an extra night because my stuff was still there so obviously they know for sure my clothes was there it's all I owned as I was homeless.

Fantastic experience: This hotel is right in the centre of Liverpool great location and the price was great too. The hotel lobby was beautiful The hotel rooms could do with an update but still very comfortable.

Patricia Gwilt 10 months ago

Positive experience: The room we had was quite big so that was good, however the mattress on the bed was terrible it was like a camping mattress, uncomfortable clean towels and clean sheets so that was good.

Noreen Smith 10 months ago

Positive experience: Although a very grand building it is need of urgent repair Our double room was ok but the bathroom.. Well I certainly couldn’t have used the shower!! The bath was disgusting although I at first thought it was dirt I now think it was just well worn!! The handle was hanging off the door which my husband fixed in a couple of seconds I don’t understand how it had been left in that state!! The food again was ok and certainly couldn’t fault the staff But would I stay again?? No

Pasha Dupont 10 months ago

Positive experience: Don’t be fooled. The place is a dive. Friend of mine had someone break into their room and NONE of the locals would ever suggest booking here.

Anna templeton 10 months ago

Negative experience: Stayed for 4 nights. Positives are the location and the nice staff in the dining room and on reception. That’s about it really. We stayed in a twin room, 172, which was in serious need of upgrade. Scratched furniture and areas of the ceiling that had been patched and never painted noticed initially. Then realised Windows didn’t close properly so could hear all the street noise. The sink in the bedroom gurgled every time the bathroom was used. The bathroom cold tap caused the most horrendous very loud noise in the bedroom every time it was turned on. The beds were really high. The mattresses creaked loudly meaning i had to try and lie completely still so as not to wake my friend! The mattress was clearly old and you could feel the springs. Result being Really sore back and hips by night 4. Only one pillow so a sore neck too by the end of the stay. Positive was bed sheets very clean and carpet was clean. Now to the bathroom….. Bathroom was bleak. A bit like an old victorian hospital. Window didn’t close. Smelt damp. Grout and bath seal a dirty grey. Floor was patched and duck tape used to cover the join created when an inspection hatch has been made. Zero effort to make it look ok at all. Rest of the hotel…….Lift area near our room smelt so damp it was hard to stand for any length of time. Food was pretty awful. We had dinner bed and breakfast but after dinner on the first night we ate out. Breakfast was either fried foods, toast or cereal and pretty dire too. My friend said her egg was solid, like one you get in a joke shop! My hash browns had been cooked so long it was only the outer shell left. Bread for toast was about a millimetre thick. Muesli tasted like it had a tonne of sugar in it. Finally, every night it sounded like someone was being murdered outside the hotel. This went on until the early hours. When you came home at night there were people lying around the entrance steps wrecked. This could have been pretty intimidating for some. I’m sure me and my friends will recount stories of our stay at the Adelphi and laugh heartily…it was like Carry on Abroad or the Money Pit however, save yourself and pay a little more and stay somewhere decent. £50 a night is really too much!

Positive experience: Stayed here for two nights midweek. Excellent location. Grand hotel with lovely large seating area for afternoon tea. Stayed in a twin room on the 3rd floor. It was very spacious. It is a bit dated but it was clean and was comfortable. Breakfast was good and plentiful. Would stay again.

Positive experience: We were lucky to have the room on the opposite side of the main street. Nice hotel.

Im “In my opinion” Anonymous 10 months ago

Negative experience: Large room. Twin room 119. No heating as the radiator wasn't working. Reception requested housing keeping to give us a small oil filled heater. Which only took the chill out of the air in the room. Old bathroom but great shower and clean.

Barry Graham 11 months ago

Positive experience: Clean n tidy hotel and great for all the city centre shops and bars

Samantha M 11 months ago

Positive experience: We were suprised how big our room was, I think maybe you have to be lucky whether you get a decent room or not, but our second floor twin was great for the money we paid (less than 50 quid). Yes it was a bit worn round the edges but it was clean and the beds were comfortable. Staff were OK, photo ID needed to check in. Lounge downstairs is very impressive. We didn't try breakfast.

Michael Docherty 11 months ago

Positive experience: A once grand hotel, which still has very impressive features, but now is in need of urgent refurbishment and improvement. The windows in our room were not capable of being closed, and the secondary double glazing was completely immobile, thus allowing cold winds and street noise to enter. The adjacent car park, however, was able to be arranged at the reception on arrival, and the breakfast was fairly good. The redeeming features of this hotel, however, are still worth a visit.

Negative experience: Haha! Where to begin. As we arrived at our room on the third floor, we were greeted by the foulest smell I may ever have smelt. I can only compare it to an overwhelming stench not unlike the mixture of sweat, BO and suncream after a hot summer's day. Disgusting! The place is just generally disheveled. Old carpets, other interesting smells and an alarmingly desolate feeling. There seemed to be plenty of guests in reception and then constant sound of lifts whirring yet no one coming in our out of the rooms or lifts. We were unable to use the shower in the bathroom as it looked really unhygienic. A strange dark stain marked the whole bottom of the bath and the aforementioned alarming stench seemed to be localised in the bathroom. The beds were uncomfortable and we woke up with sore throats after a terrible night's sleep. The staff were ok but just did the bare minimum and location was excellent.

Positive experience: Restaurant open to public for dinner buffet £15 each person. Nice atmosphere.

Julie Brown 11 months ago

Negative experience: It took us a 30 minutes to book in and we were third in the queue. Slow service. The room itself was dated and the bed headboard had fallen off. Not the cleanest and the furniture was so old. No plug socket near a mirror. Shower over a very VERY old bath, which was hardly a shower. Slow stream. We stayed the one night then left. Would not recommend although the hotel is very grand. Needs updating and money spending on it. Carpets are filthy

James McGuire 11 months ago

Negative experience: Out dated and shabby give it a miss my room was not serviced the three days I stayed. The bathroom room was ancient with added mould and the corridors in the hotel smelt of damp.

Pat Gibbons 11 months ago

Negative experience: Awful. Attended for an event. Disabled lift broken. Toilets downstairs had no lights so everyone was queuing for 1 disabled toilet which was flooded and smelly. My husband couldn't drink tehe lager, bottles were fine. The event itself was brilliant but I wouldn't return

Kevin Johnson 11 months ago

Fantastic experience: Booked a £49 one night Lex room only, 3hrs before check-in. The room and the bedding was clean, as was the bathroom with red hot water, kettle and hot drinks, Ironing board and working TV. I cannot comment on the food and drinks as we went into the city. It wasn't perfect, it was £49. If you have very high standards, this is not for you. I will definitely stay again. I used Park Bee multi storey for parking 5 minute walk using the Just Park website.

P P 11 months ago

Negative experience: Place is very old and cold. Something about the bathroom I didn’t like doors were always freaky always felt like someone was watching me. My partner had gone out to get us a takeaway so I thought I’d take a bath whilst in the bath the electric kept going off and on and in the corner it was almost as though there was something shadowing over me. I just always felt as though the bathroom has a very dark tale behind it. It’s so cold in that room I hated it in there. Definitely haunted.
