The Carlyon Bay Hotel: Reviews
Fantastic experience: One of the best hotels in tge South West
Fantastic experience: Lovely place to stay, the staff are excellent and friendly, and with 3 restaurants you can fine dine or have a burger in the spa bar.
Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel and staff.this is the best hotel in St.Austell.Great food and service.Great views from the hotel as well. The staff are all helpful.Thank you all at the hotel.Craig and Lucy.
Fantastic experience: I spent a weekend at Carlyon Bay Hotel for my partners birthday and found the experience to be exceptional. The hotel was immaculately clean throughout, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment from the outset. This was more than simply a hotel stay; it was a memorable experience. The atmosphere was calm and well presented, and the overall standard of the accommodation and service contributed to a truly enjoyable weekend. It is a stay that has left a lasting impression, and I would highly recommend Carlyon Bay Hotel to others seeking a high-quality and memorable break.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish, excellent food, excellent service, wonderful staff.
Fantastic experience: This was my first visit here today I came for lunch with my bowls club for Christmas lunch and the food was outstanding! We managed to find a disabled space to park in, and the staff on the door are very friendly and helpful and made sure that we got into the right place to wait for the others to arrive, and the service in the lounge area was amazing. The quality of the food was out of this world, everything was very well presented and the waitresses made sure that we all got the right food that we had pre-ordered and again everything was delivered quickly and efficiently. When we needed to order extra drinks, the waitress is dealing with the drinks. Orders were wearing blue uniform compared to the waitresses serving the food who were all dressed in white uniform, so we were able to tell the difference without any complication. I would highly recommend this place to others as the quality of service and food was what other hotels should strive for. And I hope to be back again sometime next year! Merry Christmas to all the staff who were involved in preparing our meals today and serving it. You all did an absolutely fantastic job!
Fantastic experience: The food was absolutely phenomenal definitely recommend this place staff was really friendly as well
Negative experience: Your hotel is on the news! Why would anyone stay there now.
Fantastic experience: A lovely hotel with very friendly helpful staff. A good location with the SW Coast path literally a stones throw away leading to Charlestown. Special mention to Jamie the waiter, so entertaining and welcoming!!
Fantastic experience: We have just had a 3 course Sunday lunch at the Carlyon Bay Hotel. I can honestly say it was one of the best Sunday lunches that we have had eating out. It was fabulous right from the start to finish. We had a lovely salmon starter and then the main which was beef, Yorkshire pudding, and a selection of potatoes and vegetables. We followed it with a selection of cheese and biscuits and then a large pot of coffee and a chocolate. The food was so delicious and the portions were quite large. It worked out at £36.00 each. For a luxury 4 star hotel that was quite reasonable and felt so relaxed and everyone was so welcoming and friendly. We loved it so much we have booked up for their Xmas lunch in the run-up to Christmas. Well done to the hotel and all staff.
Fantastic experience: Very clean and a great place to stay. I will be returning.
Fantastic experience: An amazing few days to celebrate the centenary. Never had such great service consistently across every member of staff.
Fantastic experience: We went here after we got married to eat ... Just lovely ... Staff were wonderful, especially James who looked after us...
Fantastic experience: If you are planning to go to Cornwall and have the best experience, I highly recommend you to book this hotel. We had a lovely long weekend away and we will book again next year.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely fantastic hotel, stayed for one night in a sea view room. stunning views. all staff super friendly and helpful
Fantastic experience: Great service, lovely hotel
Fantastic experience: Can walk to the beach or in the other direction to a small coastal town, Charlestown.
Negative experience: Here for Business and most likely to come more often. Until today it was absolutely to come to the breakfast room a bit earlier, work and when breakfast starts you get some tea. This morning change of rules, when I was in the room I was in a rather unpolitely manner asekd to get out of the room because I was disturbing the staff.... wahtever this means. A bit later when I picked up my bag in this room I was more or less asked again in a very rude manner to get out. There is another hotel a bit further up the street. I think I will be next time there. paying guests also pay for good manners and behavior of the staff
Fantastic experience: A delightful experience and wonderful staff. After a horrible hotel in St Ives we were looking for something better and this was like landing on paradise. We look for to visiting other hotels in this group (Brend Collection). Sitting on the cliff top it has fantastic views of the sea and is adjacent to the South West Coast path making it easy walk to Charlestown and the nearby beach. Thoroughly recommended.
Fantastic experience: Wow what a fantastic hotel. We are staying here now for 2 nights in room 306. A west facing family room. The receptionist kindly moved us to this lovely room on arrival as the one I booked was north facing and not what we expected. The hotel is beautiful, clean and the outdoor pool is amazing with a stunning view. I can’t fault the staff, everyone from cleaners to bar staff and reception smile and make you feel welcome and at ease. The spa is a pleasure to use. Thank you for making this 2 night stay perfect. We will be back.
Fantastic experience: Had a lovely meal at the hotel last night. Everything was well cooked. Joshua served us all night, large party of people, excellent service and he was very attentive. Would certainly recommend
Fantastic experience: The most incredible place. We had such a fantastic stay, so family friendly and welcoming. Lots to do in the hotel, and local area. Service was impeccable throughout the hotel. Special thanks to the porters who treated our boys like royalty. We will be back!
Fantastic experience: We stay for a week every few years with extended family and the hotel never disappoints. The staff are consistently excellent - there is clearly a good culture here and they understand how to give discreet, excellent service and still be themselves. From Neil the chatty gardener to the incredible doorman - it’s five star service without the stuffiness. The food is excellent - although a personal preference would be for more local fruit and veg on the menu. Rooms are all nicely done and the combination of indoor and outdoor pools, tennis, playground, putting green, chipping course, beach and lovely main golf course means there is always plenty to do whatever the weather. Nothing much changes year to year at the Carlyon Bay hotel - but nothing much needs to.
Fantastic experience: A very nice hotel by the sea, with great views in the right rooms. Prices are little steep but well worth it for the surroundings.
Positive experience: We regularly visit the Carlyon Bay Hotel, either for lunches or afternoon teas and always enjoy the location and the service here but yesterday was a little disappointed. I am not a tea drinker and always have coffee. Usually one cup of coffee is okay with the sandwiches and cakes on the afternoon tea but yesterday, being a hot day, i was thirsty. The tea drinkers were able to have several cups from a large teapot but all i was given was one cup of coffee. On asking for a second i was told i had to pay for it. This was a first for me on spending a lot of time have afternoon teas at several different venues. The four of us spent a total of £147 here with a couple of beers, so i think its not unreasonable to have a free refill when it costs pence to make.
Fantastic experience: The sea view restaurant has the best quality menu in cornwall.
Positive experience: Called in for a pre- lunch Sunday pint. Terrace very busy. Inside seating plentiful & comfortable. Views spectacular, parking confusing.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic service, couldn’t have. been more helpful & food was very good. Indeed. Very comfortable rooms Will most certainly use again.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic sea views, lovely staff who couldnt be more helpful. The lounge feels like a home from home, the food was excellent, breakfasts were a great buffet with lots of choice. The spar was nice with two pools and a big hot tub, almost a hydro pool tbh. Great beach nearby.
Negative experience: Amazing hotel location was perfect so close to the beach and lots of sun beds and pool was nice but heated pool was too hot. Garden was beautiful you can tell the Gardeners take a lot of pride and it shows. Hotel and staff were nice. Food was disappointing. Very expensive and not very good food. Felt cheap. Not all rooms have aircon.
Fantastic experience: Only ate here but what an enjoyable experience, from the G and T in the terrace in the sun onwards. Some excellent fish courses. Good service, too.
Fantastic experience: Wow what a fabulous venue for a wedding. Staff were so lovely, welcoming and helpful to us to surprise. Beautifully set up room for the wedding and our Singer took so many photos, he even got given a badge to have him as part of the team for the unsuspecting guests. Massive thank you to Holly and Team for all your help, we cannot wait to be back at the wonderful Carlyon Bay Hotel - fabulous wedding venue Paula and the Singing Waiters in the UK Team
Fantastic experience: This for me, was the ultimate afternoon tea experience. Fantastic staff right from the off, very attentive, very professional but still personal. And the setting/ambience was just perfect. Unfortunately I didn't get the name of the young lady who attended to us, but big shout out to you. You helped make the experience just perfect x
Fantastic experience: The Carlyon Bay Hotel hosted my daughter’s wedding last week Everything was perfect Could not recommend enough Thankyou to Martha and all the staff who helped make the day amazing
Fantastic experience: Would just like to thank all the wonderful staff at the carlyon bay hotel for there hard work and dedication in making sure our stay was absolutely fabulous. Everyone was so helpful and polite (what a team ) . The hotel itself was beautiful and location perfect. We will definitely be coming back soon .
Positive experience: The hotel itself is a little dated and could do with some tlc. There were cracks in the bedroom walls, dead flies over the window sills, the steam room tiles where falling off, not much steam coming out and the sauna not hot enough at all. The service from staff was exceptional, a little pretentious though. Food was good, however we definitely caught food poisoning as both myself and partner where up all night with sickness and dirroeah. This really ruined our 1 night stay at the hotel. We had treatments in the spa, they were both exceptional and I would highly recommend the Elmis facial. Although the night away was still nice as a break the fact that we got ill from something has put us off wanting to return again. Ashame as we went on the recommendation that the food was amazing.
Positive experience: I had a single room with en-suite which appeared quite comfortable, however needs air conditioning. It was so hot at night, window opens a fraction but curtains required because of outside light. First night wondered if I had a virus but second night was the same. I was exhausted through lack of sleep so booked out and went home missing a day at lost gardens of Heligan . Hotel would not refund my extra night. Next time I will stay in Charlestown.
Fantastic experience: I had a fantastic week's stay here. I would recommend this hotel to ever person seeking a great hotel with wonderful staff and service.
Fantastic experience: I loved my stay here. Like going back in time with old world charm. Nice location, good food and relaxing
Fantastic experience: The best place to be in Cornwall. Hands down one of the best hotels ive ever stayed in ever. Location is amazing. Hotel is elite. Service outstanding. You will not be disappointed staying here.
Fantastic experience: My daughter held her wedding here on Friday 9th May and from start to finish the whole experience was First class.the staff and venue could not have been more perfect.Thank you.
Positive experience: Visited to have a treat a delicious cream tea, yum! The staff were friendly and considerate
Fantastic experience: I don't think I've ever seen a hotel with so many staff it was refreshing. The young lady at dinner service was wonderful I'm just sorry I forgot her name but Gemma at breakfast was also lovely , very helpful asking if we needed any advice on local points of interest etc The views from the room are just stunning and as it was sunny with the outside pool you could be anywhere in the world so gorgeous, rather stupidly left the window in the bathroom open and the light on which meant the bathroom had every flying creature this side of the Tamar in it the next morning, apologies to the housekeepers .will definitely be back
Fantastic experience: Its wonderful, amazing views, lovely staff. I’ve especially enjoyed well made cocktails and the lovely breakfast. I would definitely recommend a visit if you plan a trip to cornwall.
Fantastic experience: We had a lovely stay in a standard double room with sea view. The room was very clean and comfortable. The outdoor pool was lovely to swim in on a fairly cool April day, and the rest of the spa was great too. Breakfast was excellent - a very wide range of options including freshly cooked full Cornish. The coffee was rather weak, that's personal taste and the only thing I wouldn't have again. We loved the location. We wandered to Carlyon Bay, and along the coastal path - Charlestown harbour is only 15-20 minute walk to the west. Such a beautiful place for a night away. Very convenient for the Eden Project. The staff in all areas of the hotel were very friendly, polite and attentive.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic Hotel, I cannot thank all the staff enough for all their hard work and attention to detail. Excellent food Excellent service. Will definitely be returning in the future Rita and Sarah Stott
Fantastic experience: My son and I had a lovely stay at this beautiful hotel. The facilities and family-friendly atmosphere really make it an exceptional place to stay. The location is stunning and well placed for lots of activities around Cornwall and south-west Devon. Although it was our first time, the number of other guests that are returning visitors speaks volumes about the way the hotel is run and the care that staff show. Would happily return in the future, safe in the knowledge that we'd receive a warm welcome.
Fantastic experience: Splendid in every way! Nothing is too much bother for the friendly, helpful staff. We stay twice a year. Great golf course with amazing views.
Fantastic experience: Love everything about this hotel … rooms are quality, food is good, spa is good, golf is great, breakfast is great! Highly recommend this hotel
Fantastic experience: The Taste Brasserie here at Carlyon Bay Hotel is quite possibly the best restaurant I've ever been to at a hotel. The food's 10/10, atmosphere's spot on, and the service is on a whole new level! Just want to mention two of the restaurant staff that stood out for me, Diane and Ben. They were both exceptionally attentive, kind and polite.
Negative experience: The female staff member wearing blue doing the front desk for the bay view restaurant is so rude. Came across her on the 14th of March and we asked questions as it was our first night. She just came across as brash. But I thought nothing of it. As it could have been a language barrier. She was not busy. But it put me off going that night. We tried to go again the next day. Again very rude, brash and not listening to what was said. I have to repeat myself twice (which to be fair was another staff members fault - as they said they were looking into it and she actually wasn't). The other staff member, mentioned in brackets above, approached me when i walked in the restaurant and said she would ask the kitchen my question, when she came back she served other people and did not follow up on my query for a table but she left me at the front for 5 minutes, if another member of staff did not approach me asking what I was doing there, she would have left me there as she said she did not deal with my query for a table for two...joke, right?. The female in blue sat me down and asked me if I would like a drink first without even offering me a drinks menu. i had to ask for the menu to be explained. Didn't wait around to let me ask any questions. Gave me a wine menu when I asked for a drinks menu even though she knew I didn't drink alcohol. Was not approached for another five minutes or given a heads up I would be seen to. Honestly, she was so unwelcoming and made me feel uncomforable. Probably up there with one of the worst customer service. But my wife noticed she was not like this with other guests. Which makes me believe it was because of my colour. As we were the only people in the hotel who were not white. We were not made to feel this way by any other staff member at the hotel. It did make me feel this restaurant is not for certain types of people. As both staff members were not helpful. And trust me I don't say that lightly. I left without ordering. We asked to move our rooms due to us being in a room that was noisy and next to construction . We could hear everything from every other room. And whilst we got moved to a 'better' room with a better view, which is meant to be more expensive. The room was smaller and the mattress was so bad. It had a horrible smell. TV was older. So please be aware the 'cheaper room', with no view was better. The new room also had thin walls. So the hotel in general has very thin walls. Believe me you can hear everything from people having intercourse to other people doing there nightly toilet duties. It's so weird. And made us just stay silent in our rooms. The buggy to the private beach was not available to us either, which was not made clear to us before we booked but promoted online as part of the hotel. We were told halal menus were available. But was still given menus with alcohol and bacon in it. So whilst we are grateful they tried to accommodate us it's not accommodating, which isn't a problem, but should not offer to be so. They have food facilities such as snooker, golf and tennis. 2 restaurants opened at all times, even though advertised as far more. most staff are friendly The steam room was not available, which was a big part of us staying here. I have asthma and very bad back. The steam is the only thing that helps. I am also disabled so if I walk long distances I need the steam to help my back. Also gym and spa closed at 8 and all restaraunts at 9. On the final day. We asked for late check out which was accepted but we still had the cleaner come into our room at 11:30 which was uncomfortable as I was half dressed and could have been a lot worse depending on timing. She did apologise, but the same cleaner also refused us a dental kit which the maintenance guy arranged for us. Got moved of our table at the golf club. Apparently it was reserved but a group of people walked in and asked to change the table to a table of four. The pricing is also odd, they don't make clear the pricing for dining deals so we paid quite a bit extra for food with less.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely wonderful Truly memorable stay for our anniversary everyone was so helpful and friendly
Negative experience: A lovely Hotel and location although was ruined on the final day. As a Coach Driver needing to work through the night with Passengers and a huge responsibility I needed to sleep during the day. The Hotel had work being done opposite my room involving Drilling, Banging, Grinding and lot's of Dust. Called Reception although made no difference. Totally ruined an amazing stay. Hotels should be for rest and recuperation Day and Night.
Fantastic experience: Unfortunately not stat at the hotel but based on my experience of restaurant service been excellent, staff professional and attentive view and surroundings what you expect highly recommend to anyone visiting cornwall for first time
Fantastic experience: Afternoon tea at Carlyon Bay Hotel was lovely. Great service at booking and by the team during service. Selection of food and freshness of the food was great. Only downside was the bits of food on the chairs on arrival, stickiness of the table and small chip in the coffee cup but the service provided outweighed this. Would we return, yes.
Fantastic experience: We recently stayed here and I can absolutely recommend the Carlyon Bay Hotel as first class! It was by far the best Spa, Hotel Room and FOOD, (in particular), facilities and overall experience that we have had the pleasure of….. thank you management and staff….. the piano player was amazing ❤️❤️ Dave & Caroline
Fantastic experience: High quality hotel in a stunning location with excellent facilities, fabulous food and highly attentive, helpful staff. Beautiful spa, indoor and outdoor pool, golf course, tennis courts and very relaxing indoor bar and lounge areas. The hotel is art deco style and beautiful inside. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff whose sole mission seems to be to ensure guests have a wonderful stay. Would recommend and will return.
Fantastic experience: Really lovely hotel, staff friendly, room & bed was super comfy. Food and drinks were superb and fab location. Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: We went for my 70th birthday November 2024, can't fault this Hotel, very welcoming with a relaxed atmosphere, rooms were very nice and very comfortable bed, staff very pleasent
Fantastic experience: Just spent the most fantastic 4 days , including my 65th Birthday, at the Carolyn Bay Hotel .The room was fantastic , bed really comfy .Staff were excellent , some of the best staff I've ever experienced theyshould be proud of themselves for they way they conduct themselves and carry out their duties !!! Spa was really good and an added bonus . I can't recommend this Hotel strongly enough , it really is a little piece of Heaven in Cornwall !!!!
Positive experience: Would def stay again, Great location. Friendly staff great food, everything you need in a hotel. But would choose a differant larger room with bay view. Only the room was a little small, bathroom needed updating,
Fantastic experience: Bought my girlfriend a Spa break here as a Christmas present. She absolutely loved it! Her first time here, my second. The spa itself is relaxing & well-equipped & we loved the fact you could pop next door to the bar & bring your G&T back into the spa with you. One of the treatments I booked had to be cancelled due to staff illness, but it wasn't an issue. The treatment she did have was the Elemis Intensively Cleansing Salt Glow, which she enjoyed immensely. The rooms are clean, bright & well-appointed. All-in-all a thoroughly enjoyable break. We'll be back in the summer with a view to visiting the beach, as the weather when we were there was dreadful! But that made the relaxing spa even more enjoyable.
Positive experience: All staff were pleasant, breakfast was very good. 'Spa' area seemed over crowed at times, with very limited space around the pool with nowhere to put your robe - some hangers would be handy? Room was really warm, had to sleep with the windows open. Mattress/bed was possibly the worst we've slept on in a long time. Appreciate the feeling of a mattress is subjective, however the sprung divan base and soft mattress was crippling to sleep on. Staff put a sheet of ply under the mattress which made this marginally better. Sound proofing isn't great. Walking distance to Charlestown which was nice.
Fantastic experience: Exceptional place, with amazing views of St Austell Bay. We enjoyed afternoon tea, which looked amazing, and it tasted amazing too. The service was exceptional too. We went back for Christmas dinner, and it was delicious too.
Fantastic experience: Having only eaten here with my family, I can only comment on the bar and restaurant. The staff are extremely well trained and polite. The food is a nice example of fine dining (and great value given the quality). The view is lovely (as you might have expected). So great view, great food, polite/capable staff for a good price. If you are in the area ..... why wouldn't you?
Fantastic experience: Absolutely stunning, but you are little out of way so it is a taxi if you want to go out of the complex for something different, food was awesome
Fantastic experience: Fantastic Hotel. Wonderful food & service . The quality and friendliness of all staff is rare and very welcome. Rooms were comfortable, and Spa and Golf Course were excellent. It's not cheap but great value for money.
Fantastic experience: It's always good to stay at Carlyon Bay Hotel. It has a nice comfortable feeling from moment you arrive. The golf course is challenging and you never beat it.
Negative experience: Not overly impressed. Clean & tidy bedrooms, quite warm though and no air con. Half of the Spa was out of action due to a maintenance issue. Cost £390 for a single nights stay for 2 people. The £35 a head 3 course dinner (included in the £390), and I only got 1 cuboid of potato the size of a 4x2 Duplo block with the main course. I'm sorry that is not what I expect, nor is it good value. The roast duck was tasty though. Breakfast was good value as it is a self service buffet, including hogs & black puddings, with unlimited coffee & juices. Tuck in! Also £6.80 for a bottled beer that has travelled all the way from St Austell breweries is asking too much!
Fantastic experience: We had our wedding here in June and we cannot thank everyone enough for making our day go without a hitch. The food was incredible and the location stunning.
Fantastic experience: Carlyon Bay Hotel is an excellent choice for a Cornwall cliff/beach weekend, superb service, kids- friendly, rooms were spacious and clean, beds were soft & comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, don’t miss out on ‘from the kitchen’ option, never thought grilled fish for breakfast can be so good. There are plenty of things you can do at the hotel for free. The hotel has 2 purple tennis court , putting⛳️ , indoor and outdoor pools, as well as the dry / steamed Sauna and jacuzzi. Tho, the pool facilities looked a bit dated, they were clean. Spa treatment was popular over the weekend d, I suggest book in advance cuz we didn’t manage to get a slot. I recommend dinner at the award-winning restaurant - beautiful sunset view and the food was beyond expectations. The hotel is ~10min away from Eden project by taxis. I specifically want to thank the hotel staffs, they were super friendly, helpful and took great care of us. We were on a girls trip (4 Asian girls), took the GWR sleeper train from London Paddington to St Austell, arriving at 06:49am in the morning. The hotel booked us a taxi and by 7:10am we arrived smoothly at the hotel. Apparently our rooms were not ready at that time, so after the staffs introduced us the hotel facilities, showed us the lounge, they also offered us a breakfast ! It really helped us with re-energised and enjoyed the rest of the day. Overall, I wouldn’t say it is a luxury hotel, but I really had a great time here. I would come back again with my family :)
Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel with great facilities: the kids programme and club, run by Adrianne and Lynne, are particularly fantastic! The food is amazing and, as a number of us are vegetarian, we were impressed by the range of options for those with dietary requirements. The staff have been fabulous: really helpful, professional and great service. Everywhere is kept very clean, tidy and well presented. The pools, golf and tennis are all wonderful facilities - the range of golf options is incredible and in particularly beautiful surroundings (even the practice area / smaller pitch and putt is set amongst gorgeous coastal gardens). A perfect family holiday experience :)
Positive experience: I was booked in for a luxury spa day, so I can't comment on the rooms. The spa was very nice, indoor and outdoor pool, steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. All were clean and well maintained. Personally I would have liked the steam room to have a fragrance. The ladies changing room is quite small with only one shower, one changing cubicle and one toilet. No spinner for your costume and no complimentary moisturiser (which is normal in other spas that I've visited). The treatments I received were fantastic and the staff were really lovely and no hard sell on the products either. Lunch was delicious - a bit expensive, but for the type of hotel not unusual. £20+ for a ceaser salad and £16.50 for a cocktail. The service was excellent Overall a really lovely day
Fantastic experience: I've stayed here about twenty times in the last 15 years, at different times of year including Easter, summer, Christmas and New Year. Each occasion has been marvelous: the food is great, the service friendly and impeccable. The decor in both the public rooms and bedrooms is tasteful and to a high standard. It is absolutely my favorite hotel.
Thank you Judith - your feedback is much appreciated.
Fantastic experience: Another fantastic, relaxing stay at The Carlyon Bay Hotel, our favourite hotel on our visits to Cornwall. The staff are always welcoming, helpful and friendly, and our stay feels like home from home. The food is delicious and very good value, and the facilities, views etc., are exceptional. A special thank you to Natasha for sorting out our last minute bookings at such short notice for my sister and I, having travelled from Brittany and London. We very much look forward to our next stay.
Positive experience: We stayed here for a weekend and it was a last minute booking. Pretty nice hotel, I wouldn’t say it’s ‘luxury’ though. Staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was very small and stuffy. We loved the facilities such as the heated pool, tennis courts and the putting green and made use of all of them. The restaurant let us down, food was pretty good but the service needs improvement. We were left without drinks for a while and staff were too busy stood chatting and laughing with one another to notice my attempts to make eye contacts to get another drink! Overall a pretty decent hotel but I would not consider it luxury or say it’s worth the price we paid. Also cost £25 for a pint and a standard cocktail! Crazy!
Negative experience: Came for a spa day- when you rock up to the hotel it looks like a block of concrete (the view they sell of the hotel is from the back, the front is very ugly). Facilities were sadly lacking, everything looked like it was from the 1980s- changing room like a school locker room and no shampoo or conditioner or proper hair dryer despite being nearly £100 each for a spa day. The spa facilities were clean but again very dated and dilapidated. The experience wasn’t quite relaxing as the spa pool had screeching kids playing about because all of the facilities are open to all hotel guests. When you pay that much you don’t expect a relaxing day to be interrupted by 6 year old kids jumping about (not against kids in general but it just doesn’t set the mood for a relaxing spa day when you are paying a lot of money). That being said the staff were lovely and professional and we had a great massage.
Fantastic experience: It's such a lovely place to stay. The staff were wonderful, so helpful and friendly. Lovely food. The spa and pools were so relaxing.
Positive experience: All I can say, when I think of my experience here, one name that comes to mind over again is Rebecca, from the start she went out of her way to insure my experience with Carlyon Bay and Cornwall was the best it could be. I came to Cornwall to for the views to surprise my partner for her birthday on an unplanned visit, hotel hopping- Carlyon Bay was the first stop on the list of hotels, upon pulling into the car park the doorman at the entrance, the look of the building was classy, we felt very welcomed entering, the ambience was very relaxed and comforting and all staff were very accommodating, perfect for a quiet relaxing getaway.
Fantastic experience: Had an amazing spa day, fantastic facilities and surroundings. Excellent food. Friendly and attentive staff. Superb massage.
Fantastic experience: We stayed here as we were going to a gig at the Eden Project, which is only a 10 minute taxi ride away (and there were plenty of taxis). The room was great, and I particularly note the quality of the towels and shower. The service was excellent, the only exception being that the bar was closed at 11:15 pm, when my party and at least 15 other people arrived back from the Eden Project, hoping to get a drink or two.
Negative experience: Stayed for dinner at 'Taste' The service was good and I would have expected to come away feeling satisfied with the food but unfortunatly the fish pie gave us all fairly painful stomach ache resulting in multiple toilet runs. I wouldn't say it was food poisoning but I would say something was unfortunately off with it. The other meals, fish and chips and sea bass were excellent but unfortunatly that fish pie just wasn't at all safe for consumption.
Negative experience: The room we stayed in was massively outdated, although seemingly well kept. The service was sub-par at best, it was one of those places where you're constantly feeling forgotten about and having to prompt service. No offer of water with dinner, no offer of coffee with breakfast etc. not to mention, the prices for the a la carte dinner menu are extortionate for less than mediocre food. It all seemed a little odd, living off of old age pensioners money.
Positive experience: We stayed for 3 days and 2 nights. Beautiful hotel and location, and the staff were very polite. But the opinion of the room should be more amenity. But overall, this hotel was so beautiful with sea view, golfing, tennis, food, spa, and a swimming pool that was fantastic place.
Fantastic experience: Amazing afternoon tea, the staff were warm, friendly and helpful. The gluten free version was excellent, will definitely be going here again.
Fantastic experience: What a super hotel. Great staff. Lovely food. Fantastic facilities and a stunning location. Thank you for looking after us so well. Helen and Rich Angove.
Fantastic experience: The hotel is located directly at the coast. The next beach is just a short walk away. The area is beautiful. The room is very spacious and comfortable. The spa is nice. The food was amazing and great value.
Fantastic experience: Highly recommend. Very clean. Very good dinners. Amazing kids room with activities and staff. Great value for money.
Fantastic experience: My daughter and I had a Christmas gift for afternoon tea at this lovely hotel ,from my grandson and his partner , and I must say what a lovely afternoon we had, the hotel has a pleasant atmosphere and attentive, service , and the afternoon tea was delicious , staff are a credit to the hotel and I would highly recommend a visit ,
Fantastic experience: Hi everyone first class in every way , Staff brilliant, food brilliant, Location brilliant, Rooms great , Got to say hotel is up with the best they looked after us all in every way possible Mum and dad's 65th wedding anniversary thanks Simon.
Fantastic experience: Stayed at this lovely hotel whilst walking the SWCP. Beautiful position and very convenient for the Path. Super comfy, warm room with small fridge. Excellent, genuinely helpful and friendly staff. Yummy sandwiches. Great stay despite torrential rain!
Positive experience: The staff were excellent, always there whe you needed anything. Food was amazing, our room let it down as we were below the staff accommodation and all we heard was movement, banging, and talking all through the night and couldn't get to sleep , if it wasn't for this it would of been 5star. We rang down to reception and complained around 11pm amd it stopped for a brief while but then it continued, on checkout I mentioned it again and nothing was said or apologised for.
Fantastic experience: I only visited for the day so cannot comment on the bedrooms at this time. However, this is my place of choice when wishing to spend quality time with friends and family. There is a calmness and peace at The Carlyon Bay and the decor is exquisite. Warm regards Tracey
Fantastic experience: Its among one of the fab hotels thay I have been around the world. Extremely friendly, courteous and humble staff makes you feel home and always ready to go extra mile. It will be very appropriate to say that they(staff) look after you and your family. Kids loved funzone area and various kids activities throughout the day. Fun games, magic show round the table were quite entertaining for entire family. Not having a Disco night was really disappointing but other fun activities compensated it very well. Spa zone was fantastic and specially Experience Shower. I even dared to stand under cold water. What a fun !! Some of the food items were superb. All in all, fab place. Its our 2nd time we stayed in this hotel and hopefully, there will be many more.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely amazing. From the moment we stepped through the door we were completely looked after. Could not fault a thing, the rooms, the spa, the bar, the restaurant, the staff the location are all outstanding!
Fantastic experience: Working in the local community, I needed a break away for some much needed R&R. I was not disappointed. Staff were exceptionally friendly and eager to answer any queries I had, whilst maintaining appearances in their smart uniforms. The Night Porter was particularly friendly after coming back to the hotel close to midnight. The Spa on site was brilliant, the facilities were well-kept, the massage I booked worth every penny. Thank you also to the Spa staff and Lizzy the Masseuse, you were all professional and friendly, even giving guests advice on how best to use the Spa's Facilities. Whilst I cannot speak for the cooked Breakfast, the Continental breakfast had a decent variety and the waiting staff were prompt and polite, I was more than content. I shall look forward to coming back for another R&R break.
Fantastic experience: Lovely Xmas lunch with Newquay u3a and the third time I have been. Great service, lovely restaurant and good food. No doubt I will be back for a fourth time next year. I also had my wedding reception here in 1988. Really love this hotel.
Positive experience: We stayed here in a sea view room as a couples break. When you pull up to the hotel the exterior throws you back to a 1990s hotel. The reception area is open and busy being directly opposite the dining area. We got in to the lift and felt like we really were entering a Time Machine. Upon finding our sea view room we had to quickly check our phones to see if we had indeed travelled back to 1993. The room is small and old school. Glass topped furniture. It literally reminded me of staying at my Grandma Vera’s as a kid. (They even have that weird Matt thing inside the bath. You know the rubber non slip job) The spa is good. It’s not wow factor but it’s pleasant and clean. We went as soon as we dropped our bags off. The bar is right next to the spa and you can order drinks which they’ll bring out to you pool side. The evening meal was really nice. We both had different starters and mains and they were much better than we expected. Service overall is good. The food and service make the hotel. Also big shoutout to the piano man in the lounge area after dinner. That guy was bringing the entertainment
Fantastic experience: Lovely spa morning. All modern and clean facilities. Sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and swimming pool. Plenty of space and seating. We used the restaurant after and the service was great and the food was lovely and very reasonably priced.
Fantastic experience: Team were lovely, nothing was too much trouble. Reception were very helpful and friendly and the grounds keeper/maintenance guy treated the grounds with pride. Breakfast NOT to be missed and especially paired with the views. What a perfect location.
