Our comment from FitFit UK about Everlast Gyms - Southport Ocean Plaza:
Everlast Gyms - Southport Ocean Plaza offers an array of facilities in a fantastic coastal location. The gym features a spacious weights floor, a large swimming pool, and well-maintained jacuzzi and steam room areas, which are often highlighted as some of the best features. The staff are generally friendly and helpful, creating a welcoming atmosphere for members.
However, many users have expressed concerns over the outdated and poorly maintained equipment, with numerous machines frequently reported as 'out of order' and issues with cleanliness in changing rooms and shower facilities. The decor and overall ambiance are described as tired and in need of significant renovation. Furthermore, some reviews mention rude or unhelpful staff, particularly at the reception, which detracts from the overall experience.
In summary, while Everlast Gyms - Southport Ocean Plaza provides a great environment and has potential, it currently faces challenges regarding equipment maintenance and cleanliness that need to be addressed for it to truly shine.
Services, Machines and Guided Classes
Everlast Gyms - Southport Ocean Plaza: Opinions
Negative experience: I was in the changing room after the sauna when a man was staring at me the whole time he then came up to me and tried to start something because he thought he was hard it seemed like he was flirting by calling me a good girl
Negative experience: A total dump ! Don’t bother Much better guns in Southport with free parking and much better facilities
Negative experience: Terrible gym, everything is always broken.
Negative experience: Go elsewhere, this place is not worth the membership and hasn't been updated in best part of 20 years. Changing rooms, toilets and showers all need a good deep clean and update, pool and steam room often out of order and not clean - same dirt and mess often still not cleaned for days. Equipment not maintained well, most staff clueless, uninterested and ignorant. Lots of kit broken or damaged, things always out of order and take months to be fixed, air con hasn't worked in years and more lights out than working - staff even openly admit it is poor and not going to improve. All very dated cheap equipment and not even maintained safely, still got cable ties holding pulley on main cable station which has been like that for months. Plenty of better gyms in Southport now, this place is not even worth 1 star!
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Has character. Though some of the broken tread/cardio machines could do some fixing up or be replaced.
Negative experience: If you think about things that would make a bad gym, this place manages to achieve all of them. Dated machines that would have looked old in 2005, and so many of them are regularly 'out of use'. The staff that don't care. Showers always out of order due to boilers. Air conditioning regularly broken. Toilets are unclean when they're in order, but recently everyone has to use the disabled toilets and even that has broken things like emergency cords (isn't that illegal?). "If it IS broke, don't fix it" must be the instructions from the management.
Negative experience: This gym requires a total overhaul. The equipment is incredibly dated and the gym decor is looking very tired. The layout of the gym is like something from the 1980s, with far too few free weights crammed into a tiny, poorly lit corner. The centre of the Gym floor is filled with the most popular Cardio Machines of 1999, and it’s possible that they have not been serviced or maintained since then! Ancient Technogym machines dominate the rest of the floor space, gathering dust and collecting “out of order” labels. The few Rowing Machines on offer are often damaged with missing foot straps, or worse, and are in need of some TLC. To be fair, there are some Ski-Ergs on site that work, and also the TRX area is a welcome addition to the gym. This area could be rearranged to encompass a functional training area, that could include some power racks, deadlifting platforms and Olympic Barbells/Bumper Plates (see Everlast Gym Aintree as a good example of this); but I won’t hold my breath in anticipation of any sort sort of investment to improve this gym. The Men’s Changing Rooms are dated; the toilets are of course disgusting, as per all Everlast Gyms. The pool area has not been redecorated since it was a JJB gym in 2009, and looks as consistently unloved as the rest of the building. This gym is in a great location, with a large car park and offers pleasant views of the Southport coastline. The Cardio Machines could be placed facing this view, in an L-Shaped arrangement, rather than being depressingly clumped together in the centre of the room. I can’t comment on the staff, as I have never seen them on the Gym floor, but they seem pleasant enough when letting anybody and everybody walk past them, and into the facility without checking for a valid membership. Of course the Barcode Scanners for entry/exit to the gym are also broken. I would steer clear of this gym, until it receives some significant updates.
Negative experience: Rude staff, sat on their phones at reception, ignore you. Personal trainers kissing clients, machines never fixed Poor
Negative experience: Shocking I've cancelled my membership, as its not worth my hard earned money. Machines always out of order, Showers and steam room a health hazard and and to top it all, they took the hot tubs out. Just interested in profits and not members.
Fantastic experience: Here since my wife and I joined the gym I should appreciate the reception team specially Callum and Cerys who have been extremely professional and helpful! Just wanted to appreciate their efforts! The gym is clean and tidy also ,
Fantastic experience: Excellent service and food . No junk here . So pleased to have vegan choices too x many thanks
Negative experience: Such a great location it’s a shame the whole place is falling apart. To start, the staff seem really nice but most of the equipment is broken and never seems to be fixed. The equipment that does work is fine, nothing special with most of it being standard Techno Gym. If this whole place was renovated it would be a great gym - such a shame it’s been left to crumble like this. I would stay clear if you want a proper workout.
Positive experience: Please bring the punch bags back! Other than that no complaints
Negative experience: Absolutely disgusting changing rooms... floor into the pool is slimy, machines not working... showers out if order... pool closed on a few occasions and the entire women's showers smelt like sewage then closed for two days... loads of machines off in the gym... definitely not worth the money.
Negative experience: This gym is going downhill stuff not care managers half sleep place dirty I been going there for 15 years eye blaming all members they should not pay the monthly membership I counted today 15 machines out of order even some of them broke and they haven't got any signs out for the left to put on this shame something need doing
Fantastic experience: Recently moved gyms, went swimming this morning, changing rooms clean, showers hot, pool warm and staff really friendly
Fantastic experience: Large enough pool, lovely Jacuzzis and steam room and very clean
Negative experience: I used to love it but I've changed it for mhc and it's so much better even price better. Boiler and things constantly break here. There are too many weird people in this everlast gym even pt just looking at you inappropriately. I'm much happier where I am now
Fantastic experience: Had a trial,if I lived here I'd join
Fantastic experience: Nice friendly staff but the place needs a big revamp as it's getting dated half the time most things are not working and it take weeks or months to fix
Negative experience: Neglected unfortunately. Need to sort your entrance barriers out. All sorts coming in to train for free. Not had a penny spent on it in five years and looking tired now. Oh, and the toilets smell like the zoo
Positive experience: Joined 2 weeks ago Normally I go at 6am. The men's locker room is spotless at this time. No issues with the 2 jacuzzis or steam room. The pool is good, only complaint is 4 feet depth max, wish it was 8 feet + so u could dive in. Overall happy enough with the gym upstairs. Wish they had another cable row machine More update Hyperextension machine and ab cruncher. 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Negative experience: They scam you after you have closed your account according to their conditions, which will include overpaying usually. Then they phone you up stating you are in arrears and will take you to court if you don't pay (in some cases years later) not don't worry! The fix is just signing back up again! SCAM totally avoid, even go jogging round the block is better than this.
Negative experience: Wow… this place looks like something from 20 years ago, not a gym in 2023. Serious lack of TLC and much needed investment. Changing rooms and toilets (male) are shocking - really dirty, with one or two urinals out of order and pee all over the floor. Tried using one of the four rowing machines; first one, the screen is broken. Second one, one of the foot straps is broken. The other two, despite having the dampener set to 10, have no resistance whatsoever so feel completely broken and like you’re pulling a piece of loose thread. The weights area is adequate, although I personally hate those circular dumbbells and advise getting both those and hex. Overall the machines are a bit rusty and old. Overall this place is tired and underloved. I’ve seen better hotel gyms.
Negative experience: Shocking. Equipment all 10 years old +. Can tell no monies been put into it since ownership changed hands - much better gyms in Southport
Negative experience: Can't wait until the year is up and I leave to be honest. Changing rooms often aren't cleaned properly with some messes seen the following evening, very few private changing cubicles available, a few showers that don't even work and steam room/pool/jacuzzis not policed so often see blokes in their underwear instead of swimwear. Gross. Sunbeds out of use with no apparent time they will be. Ripped ceiling above pool, appallingly patched in places, cold and draughty when not patched Also the entrance gate is so frequently not working, I'm not entirely sure why I pay a monthly fee when anyone could just walk in. Google wants me to update my review. Only things to add are the frequent steam room and jacuzzi not working/closed. And lack of cleaning in the changing rooms (even when people go to report blood on the floor, it's still there an hour later).
Fantastic experience: Jacuzzis ❤️
Negative experience: Jacuzzis always cold. Understaffed. I don't blame the staff it's clearly head office doing everything to scrimp and save. Shame as the place has lots of potential.
Negative experience: Staff are friendly enough but there aren't enough classes and the whole place is pretty dirty and in need of a refurb. For some reason they also seem incapable of having a sufficient stock of cleaning roll/tissue, which is an utter disgrace as COVID is still knocking about!
Negative experience: The staff are friendly and the facilities are good, but the cleanliness is well below standard. There used to be staff visibly cleaning changing areas etc on a regular basis, I haven't seen this for a while and it shows. There is always dirt on the changing area floor and round the pool there is slime between the tiles. Such a shame.
Positive experience: Love the atmosphere the staff are really nice but a lot of the Gym equipment is broken. It's a bit tired and needs updating.
Fantastic experience: Best decision I have made to join this gym
Positive experience: Since the takeover I’m still yet to see any investment. Machines are looking tired, and don’t get me started on the locker situation. There is never any lockers available because members lock them and take the key home. There must be over 100 lockers in the mens and today there was about 20 men in the gym and no lockers available. I saw a bloke with his locker key attached to his car key. How selfish! Staff are fielding complaints everyday from paying members but the head office won’t do anything and are blaming a delay in China for not being able to fix the situation. Invest in the machines and sort the lockers!!!!’ Then I’ll Change my review So investment in the changing room was made and you now need padlocks for the lockers so that’s no longer an issue. I have now moved gyms due to cost and quality of machines
Negative experience: Shocking! I am leaving the country and have sold my house and they will not let me cancel the membership within the three month window. I have provided one-way tickets to Ibiza which have been rejected as evidence. They are actually asking for a utility bill of my property to "prove" I am not coming back to the UK. They have threatened additional fees and charges if I cancel my direct debit once I leave the UK. Worst customer service I have EVER experienced. Utter disgrace. Expect the MINIMUM at every stage. This is a joke outfit so BEWARE. I cannot leave ZERO stars!
Negative experience: All the lockers are broken been promised to be refurbished for for about a year they just keeps getting worse. The pool thermostat is broken sometimes it’s very hot other times it’s cold. The steam room is out of use because it has no door. On the plus side staff are great considering the place is going down hill.
Negative experience: I only got as far as the changing rooms. The lockers seemed to all be broken, and although I asked two members for help, none was forthcoming. One answered "I don't work here" in a rather hostile manner. If members are not prepared to help members, I'll go elsewhere.
Negative experience: The staff are great. However, the pool is usually cold and the steam room has been out of operation for weeks. If I’d known it would be like this before I joined, I wouldn’t have bothered.
Negative experience: Great friendly staff let down by area management, steam room inoperative for months on end, lockers are trashed. In need of refurbishment.
Positive experience: When JJB and DW fitness had it was a good place to go to. Now owned by Everlast, they seem to running it down because there should of been Mens new lockers in by February and it’s now April Get a grip and spend some money!!
Fantastic experience: Great gym with plenty of weights and machines to use even at busy periods!! Pool/jacuzzi and steam rooms well maintained and clean
Positive experience: Good gym , loads of potential to be the best around once it's refurbished. I was a member here a decade ago and it's not changed much but I believe they will be doing some work on it. Pool area is clean , love a bit of hot therapy with the steam room and jacuzzi and a nice cold shower by the steam room for a bit of Wim hof cold therapy to finish off on. The staff look well motivated and are super friendly , that's so hard to come by these days. Overall I think this gym is good value for money and has the potential to be a 5 star rating. Thank you all at the club , your doing a good job Much respect John.
Negative experience: Changing rooms and their toilets are dirty, so is the equipment, lockers don’t work, air on in the gym hardly ever on, staff are unhelpful and some are rude. Views would be nice if you were able to see through the filthy windows. There are other gyms in Southport with much better facilities and less expensive. Been a gym goer for years and this is the worst I have been a member of.
Negative experience: Staff are not very helpful, just young rude and arrogant which isn't very welcoming AT ALL. I wouldn't recommend this gym to anybody if you want to feel welcomed and comfortable it is the complete opposite to that, no help whatsoever and also full of really young kids with a bad attitude and not very nice at all, certainly wouldn't join if I was you!
Fantastic experience: Great gym great place staff are very helpful and the classes are spot on
Fantastic experience: The main weights floor is very spacious! Lovely big changing rooms with loads of lockers; all large sized. The swimming pool is fantastic, nice and big, very clean! The whole facility looks very well maintained and the staff are genuinely lovely!
Fantastic experience: Really love it and recommend it if you have children to use the swimming pool
Positive experience: It was great to see the mens lockers have been renewed recently. Now you have to bring your own padlock, but there has always been an available locker to use this way. The gym floor equipment is still good. Great variety and availability of equipment of every type I want to use and more. Pool facilities have been good the last time I used them. Parking facilities also good and maintenance has been carried out on the grounds, as bushes were starting to encroach some parking spaces.
Positive experience: Good gym, great staff. Convinced the levels in the pool are high though as sitting in the hot tub burns your eyes
Positive experience: Nice range of facilities. However equipment is old at the gym with few machines or bits lacking. The pool is recently often closed/cold due to either maintenance or faults, as is the sauna. However, lovely location and staff are helpful.
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym , well planned out and really nice location . Staff are professional and friendly. Clenliness is second to none . All round excellent service . Many thanks
Fantastic experience: Great place
Negative experience: Sadly just cancelled my membership after trying a swim in the pool that's still unheated after 11 days. Such a shame that the club is going down the toilet as it has so much potential and the staff are all fantastic. I really feel for them.
Negative experience: Hi, I was in your Southport Ocean Plaza swimming pool today. The covid measures were none existent. Signs up saying no more than 3 in the jacuzzi, at times there where 4. Signs saying no more than 4 in the steam room, we witnessed at least 8 in there. At the poolside there was a group of girls doing a photoshoot. Absolutely out of order, I had to speak to them and tell them to delete the photo that they took which would have had me in it. In all the years I have been a member of that club I have never been more disgusted and disappointed in the experience I had today. During these covid times I would have thought there could have been at least one walk through an hour. I was in the pool for just over an hour and did not see one member of staff I hope this wasn't a snapshot of things to come.
Fantastic experience: Great plase with great staff .
Positive experience: The old DW gym, taken over by Everlast. The lockers badly need replacing in the ladies and there is often no soap or loo roll in the toilets but that's my only grumble really. The gym is roomy and airy, stunning view of the sea and loads of equipment. The pool is good but avoid at certain times due to far too many children and children's classes. Not been to any classes yet, too soon for me I am sure there will be social distancing but I prefer not.
Fantastic experience: Ron's a liar
Negative experience: Our gym is really going downhill we don't even have any cleaning staff now, so if you are thinking of joining us, don't bother, l cannot leave yet because l pay annual and with lockdown etc l still have 10 months membership.
Negative experience: We have cancelled our subscription last month and they are still taking money out of our account. But finding it almost impossible to get hold of anyone. We are still trying
Fantastic experience: Great staff, great class. And lots of well implemented social distancing precautions
Fantastic experience: superb experiance all round inc staff,pool/jacuzzi,and gym equipment
Fantastic experience: So good to be back attending the classes and gym areas
Fantastic experience: Great to get back to gym classes very well organised
Fantastic experience: Love this place!!!
Positive experience: In town for a month and thought keeping (getting) fit would be great idea and on the day we went for a look they had a month special for £50, while not cheap, it is just for a month. The facilities are excellent, lots of machines and free weights, classes of varying types, wandering staff to help - usually with a smile, a great team at the reception and even a 30 metre pool. All over very good but did have to wonder about some Fitness Instructors/Trainers who were very overweight and it can be a bit chilly in the workout area.
Fantastic experience: Good gym
Fantastic experience: Staff are very helpful and friendly, it's like my second home
Fantastic experience: DW is a fab gym to workout in, get offered a free pt session when joining. Staff are all very friendly and supportive. Recommend to everyone
Fantastic experience: DW is by far the best gym in Southport. Fitness is the top priority and the member experience is great. All staff very friendly and welcoming.
Fantastic experience: great place to work out and great and friendly staff btw happy easter to all the the staff and pt trainers at dw sports
Fantastic experience: Great gym, great staff, best in the area
Negative experience: Badly needs a refurb! one of the most expensive gyms in Southport and the equipment is one of the worse...old and badly worn.
Fantastic experience: Great place!!
Negative experience: The pool and equipment is good...But the place runs and a constant 25 degrees because they are seemingly too tight pay to turn on the air conditioning. Impossible to do any cardio in the heat there. Turn the aircon on and it will be a 5*
Fantastic experience: Staff are very helpful and friendly, changing rooms always kept clean and the pool area is well maintained. I really enjoy my sessions here.
Negative experience: Not very good , unable to get a warm drink or anything to eat although when I joined that was the deal . The pool , as always was good, I didn't go anywhere else. There's a general lack of enthusiasm from the staff . In general, it's not what I pay £30 a month for.
Negative experience: Cold showers
Positive experience: The place over the last few months has declined, with one jacuzzis not always working and cool & one permanently closed. The main pool is pretty cool/cold with the temperature now not being displayed. The membership rate is 2 twice the cost of other local gyms & the opening locally of low cost gyms has impacted on membership, at peak time, "its not busy" which is a plus but at off peak times seems to be quiet full of the old and the bold.
Fantastic experience: Great Club! Fantastic place looking over the sea whilst on the treadmills, staff are all friendly.
Fantastic experience: Staff are friendly, lots of different equipment and great views.
Fantastic experience: The shop is well stocked and fairly priced with helpful staff. Haven't used the gym
Negative experience: Southport branch of DW Sports gym.Terrible company to deal with. I cancelled an off peak membership costing £33 a month about three months ago due to ill health, as requested I attended the Gym and signed the cancellation form and thought no more about it. On 23/03/18 I received an email from a debt recovery agency,CARSUK, demanding £100 for unpaid gym membership fees, this was the first I had heard of any problem with the cancellation despite the gym having an up to date email address for me neither the gym or their head office had made any attempt to contact me to discuss. I contacted the Gym and CARSUK on 23/03/18 attaching a letter to my email, no reply but this morning 29/03/18 I received a debtors letter in the post from CARSUK demanding payment with the threat of further action if this £100 pounds was not paid. I contacted them and after some discussion they agreed to put the claim on hold for a couple of weeks to allow to speak to DW sport direct. I rang DW sport on two different numbers the first got through to a recorded message saying this number was not accepting calls, I there left message on the second number asking for a call back to discuss this problem, no response some five hours later - no surprise there given their performance to date. I have been to the gym again today and ONCE AGAIN cancelled this membership but this time got a copy of the cancellation form which a member of their staff signed in my presence. I have emailed this off to DW Sports and CARSUK today and will also be sending all the documents to date by recorded delivery/registered post to ensure that someone has to sign for receipt and it cannot be claimed that the letters never got there as they can be tracked and the name of the recipient will be on the receipt. Just to rub salt into the wound I have been told today that I will owe another months membership fee in lieu of notice, very galling given that I cancelled this membership in line with their procedures and they then managed to lose/destroy the cancellation form. As a company they have no integrity and are a money hungry organisation who use bullying and harassment to demand money, they have no understanding of the distress and upset they cause and I am not the only person to have experienced this dreadful service from this company. Buyer beware, anyone cancelling a membership at this place should ensure that they get a copy of the cancellation document to protect themselves from further problems of which I sure there will be many. I am sure I am not the only person who has suffered like this. SHAME ON YOU DW SPORTS, your membership is dropping as it is, your poor business practice will ensure that it drops even further hopefully leading to a closure of this gym. I have no hope of DW sport acknowledging their mistakes/poor business practice so further posts will be made as things develop.
Negative experience: The best of a bad bunch in the area but unfortunately this is the only accolade that can be given to this gym. The machines here are frequently broken for extended periods of time owing to their advanced age and wear. There is little to no air conditioning in this gym and the fans are never on, even in the hottest of weather (nor do the windows open). The gym area is generally in a frankly dirty state. This chain is extremely expensive given the aforementioned, an there are much better gyms within a 15 mile radius such as Pure gym, but his chain charges extortionate amounts purely due to its locality in a small town and therefore taking advantage of its clientele.
Positive experience: Great club.pool water consistently cold.
Negative experience: steph,s dance classes are great just... wish there were more on other days !!! spoke too soon as tues class now canc .....not happy !!! class disgusted !!!
Fantastic experience: I love to Dance
