Nuffield Health Edinburgh Fountain Park Fitness & Wellbeing Gym: Opinions

3.3/5 (170 Opinions)
Sheri Wallace 7 months ago

Fantastic experience: Great facilities. The pool is really good and 25m. If you can get away from work at 4pm the pool is quiet. Also about 7pm but then gets busy again. Friendly staff too. Lockers work by bringing or buying a padlock.

Guy Fletcher 7 months ago

Negative experience: Staff all really nice. Used to be great but now an unbelievable amount of broken equipment *all* the time. Never seen anything like it. Totally different from before.

Maxim Collinson 9 months ago

Negative experience: Equipment regularly broken, left unrepaired for months (Nuffield policy). The selection is reasonable, and the gym staff are excellent. The price keeps being inflated however and is now more expensive than it should be. However the sled floor installed a few months ago is casting a considerable amount of green dust into the air of the gym (and being breathed in), which no manager has acknowledged is not a great health signal. Apparently, they are still waiting for some information from their preferred supplier, which sounds like they have no interest in doing anything about it. Then again, Nuffield also runs hospitals. Perhaps manufacturing patients from inhaling microplastics in the gym is a business strategy.

Aileen Lamb 9 months ago

Positive experience: Used this gym for 20 years. Friendly staff but equipment maintenance needs to be speeded up

Stuart Whitmore 9 months ago

Positive experience: Attended gym while travelling with work, I’m a member in Nuffield down south. The gym is great has loads of different equipment! Had. Good workout but the problem is the same as my local Nuffield, poorly maintained, equipment broken, swim suit dryer out of order. Shower I used had no pressure, steam room out of order, with a sign on it saying “steam room update” indicating it’s an ongoing issue! Nuffield need to invest in maintenance or drop their pricing to reflect the service quality.

R A 9 months ago

Negative experience: Equipment always broken. More than one machine out of order for 3 months. Gym floor staff have no interest in helping people on the gym they would rather stand and chat. Cafe may as well be shut down. In major need of a re furb. Spa facilities closed due to rise in costs but membership price did not decrease as a result of the reduced facilities.

Bojana McLean 10 months ago

Positive experience: Gym equipment not fixed for weeks

Christopher Trigg 10 months ago

Negative experience: The machines are old and frequently out of action altogether. The club is in need of refurbishment and has been for a long time. They don’t seem to care, not worth the money.

Arash Ashrafzadeh 10 months ago

Negative experience: Not worth the price at all. The PTs are great people, but the changing room and toilets don't have proper ventilation so most times it smells. If something is broken (equipment, steam room, etc) it takes them ages to fix it. They seem to not care about online feedback as well!

Γιώργος Τζίφρας 11 months ago

Negative experience: Initially they tried to charge me £25 for a day pass when in an email they had sent me, they had informed me that the day pass costs £15. For anyone who wants to do a serious bodybuilding workout, go to another gym. 4 to 5 machines out of order, no hip machine, no hack squat. Very bad gym.

Isabel Aparicio Collados 11 months ago

Fantastic experience: Good options for gym classes. Casual sauna and swimming pool. Very nice and helpful staff.

seema singh 11 months ago

Negative experience: Have been going to this gym for last 6 months and it’s been okay. But recently I misplaced a jewellery item and within 30 mins of realising, upon checking it was gone. Such is the condition if by mistake you lose/drop an item. Not sure if it was the other gym visitors or the cleaning staff who grabbed it at first sight and didn’t have basic courtesy as a civilised human being to have it returned. Gym did seem to be top class with steam and sauna facilities but we can’t change people’s mindset of taking away others items. So please be very careful with your precious items and don’t wear them to the gym.bcos if you happen to misplace it you are never getting it back!! Wanted to give 0 stars but that’s no an option here !! Such a disgrace!!

Fantastic experience: Louie, Anna and the rest of the crèche did a great job looking after our baby. Lots of toys and spacious, so it's a stimulating place for little ones.

Negative experience: Lack of equipment and crowded with people. Always queuing for weights. Wouldn’t recommend for the price

Fantastic experience: Excellent for kid's swimming lessons. Also has a convenient waiting area with cafe.

Fantastic experience: Fabulous gym with a stellar crèche. The crèche came under new management in the last year and the team has made significant improvements to better serve the families at NH. I also really enjoyed the fitness classes here, especially BodyPump, Yoga, and Pilates.

Fantastic experience: Great facilities, The crèche is great , my little one loves it . Staff are lovely and so helpful with the children.

Philip Marinello 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: As a family we use the creche facilities for the kids whilst we use the gym and swimming. Louie and her team at the creche are great and we cant give enough praise always happy to accomodate and the kids love it. The front of house team are very pleasent and always happy to help with queries A 5 star family facility

Fantastic experience: Always been scared of the gym and exercise, know I no longer had any excuse so took the plunge and started with Kyle one of the PTs. Working on my confidence slowly, I’ve now lost 50lbs and know a massive part of that is the PT sessions, the amazing protein shakes made in the cafe and some willpower included. Don’t sit on the fence , if I can be successful and improve my own wellbeing and health then anyone can. Let Nuffield FP turn your life around, they certainly turned mine around full circle.

Negative experience: Worst GYM ever!!!!for many reasons! Swimming pool dirty !!! Stealing is a requral thing inside so be aware. Its like a sport for them!

Negative experience: Awful Receiption service. When we visited on 2nd aug 2024 as a usual member . The young guy sitting on the front desk in the afternoon at arounr 5:00pm. So bad and impolite service . Always shout to the client especially Asian people and respect even we ask him some basic support . I do think I was going back CCP Russia shop. I do think he should go back home if he would respect his job.

Positive experience: Staff are friendly and helpful. All areas are kept clean.Plenty of extra classes, Gym equpement keptvin good repair. TLC needed in places. Ladies loos with wobnly seats and broken lock, broken hair dryers , no sure why they are left out. One incidence of two teenagers playing with a football sized ball in the family lane , swearing at each other , not in control of the ball and disrupting the other swimmers. Asked the staff member on duty to speak to them but it didn't help.

Stephen Grant 1 year ago

Positive experience: Very tired. Rejoined recently as got a deal through Vitality but hardly any refurbishment since it opened as Esporta all these years ago.

stu 1 year ago

Negative experience: When it's busy you can't get on any of the useful equipment, seems oversubscribed. Takes them ages to fix stuff like machines or toilets. Mens shower ceilings look mouldy. It's too expensive for how shabby the gym area looks, over 700 quid a year for a standard membership. No reductions for additional family members - so if your wife joins with you that's about £1500 a year between youse. Would love to know how many members they have squeezed in this place. They will also force you to see out your years contract so make sure you really want to join. They also increase prices mid contract which should be illegal but seems it's allowed. Staff are mostly really friendly though I have heard it's not a great place to work in terms of the upper management or pay. Swimming pool is decent and cafe area is a good size. All in all, would be ok if it was about 40 quid a month but it's over £60 nowadays so feels like a bit of a rip off. It's walking distance for me but would be amazing if something like Pure gym opened in Fountainpark as competition

Ann McIntosh 1 year ago

Negative experience: It stinks in there and very unfriendly staff. Boiling in the summer and freezing cold in the winter.

Zinovia Mati 1 year ago

Negative experience: Overpriced! Most of the instructors are really nice and experienced, but even they seem dissatisfied with the gym. In the area where the classes are held, there is no space and enough weights for everyone and one day an instructor rudely denied me entry to the class, while I had a reservation. I was only two minutes late. There is no ventilation. Especially during the summer it's boiling. It's too busy and very often there are broken machines and a booking system which is not functional at all. Most of the time there is no trainer in the gym area for any questions, because the only trainer there is doing a class at the gym area. I believe they accept too many subscriptions compared to the available space they have. Maybe they should start putting a limit. Unfortunately it looks like the reasoning is "less cost, more money" as the only thing that changes is the subscription that increases. I am very sorry because it could be a very good gym.

T. M 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Great facilities, helpful staff

Indra Warnes 1 year ago

Negative experience: This gym is overpriced. The gym itself is very hot with no ventilation, the changing rooms are really tired and shabby, with the toilets often broken and a lack of hot water in the showers, and the jacuzzi has been permanently closed. There aren't enough classes for how many members there are, meaning it's impossible to book onto yoga and pilates as they book up instantly. Even smaller issues - like almost all of the TVs on the cardio machines don't work and the hairdryers and straighteners are not replaced when they break - mean it really does not feel like you are getting value for money anymore, particularly since the prices keep increasing. The personal trainers and staff are really nice and professional, but the gym is disappointing.

Jakub Pajor 1 year ago

Negative experience: No or little investment in new or existing equipment (often faulty or out of service), unable to watch TV on many cardio stations due to lack of signal (reported multiple times), and finally an original solution for cutting energy bills (initially temporary, now seems permanent), of boxing up a whole spa/jacuzzi, while this is often a selling point attracting many people including me for coming after work to relax. Poor opening hours, especially on weekends. Village Gym offers longer hours and full services, including SPA for similar price, therefore swapped.

Kari Cooper 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Clean changing rooms, with plenty of lockers, benches and space to do your hair and makeup etc. Always plenty of hot water in the showers too. Reception has a spacious cafe and free WiFi, along with a workspace.

Blair F 1 year ago

Positive experience: This used to be a great gym but I think it's gone down hill massively. It's looking a bit run down and really just needs a complete refurb. Gym equipment will often break and take weeks/months to get fixed. They keep taking facilities away AND increasing the price of the membership. There used to be a spa pool/jacuzzi which is now closed and they no longer provide towels. The classes are all fully booked as soon as they come out. The gym is always busy so you really have to avoid peak times. The showers, at least in the gents, are smelly and are mouldy. The pool is almost always full of children which is great if you have a family but if you're there to have a swim or relax by yourself, it's not. Some good things are the staff are super helpful and friendly. There is a cafe in the gym and plenty space to sit and relax or do some work. I also think the opening times are quite reasonable. However, the main reason I'm keeping my membership is because there aren't any decent alternatives close to me. I would consider puregym for better value or paying a bit more for David Lloyd or something.

Fantastic experience: I lost my phone on Tuesday this week in female changing room, but all of the team staff had tried their best to help me to find my phone, I just want to say thank you to all of you, both managers are amazing, he even helped me to find the bin, also need to thank you everyone helped me to find my phone in female changing room, even though I couldn’t find it till the end. However, after listened their suggestions to use find my phone app , I had used my iPad located my phone and set the lost mode, and…….i just want to let you all know that I have got my phone back!!! Someone picked my phone had called me back! Oh my god!!thank you for all of you again!

lauz O'brien 1 year ago

Negative experience: I have been a member for 4 months now. The gym is well equipped and great if you go at a time where it’s not busy. However I have not once been able to book into a Pilates or yoga class. I’ve been trying for weeks. There is also no option to go on waitlist for these classes. I think Nuffield should offer an option of a reduced membership where you do not get the use of classes it’s so unfair.

pauline obrien 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Had to put my membership on hold for a month and they couldn’t have been more helpful. I dealt with Chris (Duty Manager) and couldn’t have asked for more. Got in touch quickly, rectified my problem and said to get in touch anytime to reactivate my membership. Thanks again Chris

Positive experience: This place has gone downhill since I was a member previously. The gym is way too hot for a decent workout, no idea how it passes health and safety regulations. Someone took my towel from the swimming pool area and the manager wanted me to pay £13 to buy one and offered me no help at all. Everywhere you look there are out of order signs, the place is looking really tired.

Lilian Edwards 1 year ago

Negative experience: As many have said, place has been going downhill for ages. Jacuzzi removed to save money fixing and heating it : the classes booking scheme is appalling, so basically I never got into classes which made it extremely pricey for just pool. Showers randomly freezing. Staff absolutely unbothered. Cafe dreadful and shuts too early . Whole place now feels empty and dead. Sad - Ive just left & been a member for decades. They didn't even ask me why I was going let alone try to persuade me to stay. No social events for anyone but kiddies I wonder if Nuffield are just planning to sell it - they're certainly not putting a penny into maintenance. If it was a bit nearer me, David Lloyd are infinitely nicer & with outdoor pool as well..

Gloria M Alvarez 1 year ago

Negative experience: I am a very good member of the gym but this is not a child friendly place no matter how hard they try to make money saying they do. There are not facilities for toddlers/babies to have a shower after the pool, and adults complain if kids are in the changing areas. My 2 year old daughter wanted to go to the toilet and the staff made my husband signed a nonsense long form just to go with her to the loo, clearly don’t know how 2 year olds go to toilet (I guess the gym staff think they go as adults do .. lol). No surprise my daughter ended up peeing on her trousers, but the staff got their form filled in! :) Very disappointed … this is not the place for kids.

efem8 1 year ago

Negative experience: I am a member receiving a very decent corporate discount but I still feel it is way to expensive for the service. I have been in touch with the swimming team for individual or group classes multiple times (contacted 2 Nuffield gyms) and I am just not getting a reply - simply no one is bothering to reply my emails. Same with membership issues, they charged me incorrectly when my membership was frozen and I had to escalate it to customer services to receive a response. The gates often don’t work in the morning and if your card does not get registered, you are expected to chase your own non-attendance up on the phone - even if you ticked your name on the trainer’s attendance list, that’s apparently pointless as no one really checks it. Things are quite often out of order, and the studios are roasting in the morning. My membership will be cancelled as soon as my contract allows.

Negative experience: Did a trial membership and won’t be signing up. A few negatives: - Gym is ver hot with little ventilation - Showers have limited drainage, so dirty water (and urine) flows through multiple cubicles before draining away. - lots of the gym equipment is broken and there seems to be no urgency to fix it. - No jacuzzi. - The parking is free but the system is a faff. £4 fine each time you lose your ticket. Positives: - facilities are generally clean and the staff are friendly - there’s plenty of gym equipment and options for multiple types of workouts From my perspective, there’s much better gyms in the area

Queen Blondee 2 years ago

Negative experience: Been going down the pan since Virgin, sold it, equipment old, no staff retention long term, no jacuzzi, no tissue , the cost cutting is bizarre as got rid of spray to clean, but kept the really expensive and non disposable anti bacs wipes,no other gym doing this, black mold in showers , one by one all the long timers are leaving , cafe was amazing, actually has a booze licence, which was never used, cake is now served, could be creating revenue, wish I could be the manager there and make this a proper gym, I'm not sure how much longer I'll be a member here, as fundamentally went from amazing to under average.

David Proudfoot 2 years ago

Positive experience: Joined 4 months ago. Sauna, Steam room and pool are pretty good. Real shame about the jacuzzi being closed permanently - that’s a big loss. Gym is decent with plenty machines. A lot of tv features etc don’t work but that’s not a huge problem. It is probably due a decent makeover soon but unlikely that will happen. Good student discount (20%) which makes it just about affordable. Shame they don’t offer a towel service but you get used to bringing your own. Definitely would be 5 stars with a jacuzzi and if the place was freshened up.

Samuel McKnight 2 years ago

Negative experience: Left this gym months ago. They still won’t cancel my direct debit. I’ve called several times over several months, and every time they say that it’s all done. But I still see it trying to charge my account. 4 months of trying to cancel one single membership. Why did I leave? Gym is really cramped, it overheats and there not enough ventilation. For the price, it’s just not a great experience if you aren’t using the pool much. Extra star because it is a nice facility, minus the gym.

Mohammad Aldossari 2 years ago

Negative experience: Very bad service. They cancelled my membership but still take money. I recommend any one need cancel be so careful.

Angela H 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: An excellent fitness centre. Great Technogym equipment. As expected it was rammed just after work hours but there was plenty of space in the lanes in the 20m swimming pool. Sauna and steam room are at the end of the changing rooms, so you can relax in private after a swim

Joginder Kumar 2 years ago

Negative experience: There are multiple issues at gym, even though gym is very good 1) closing timing is the biggest issue weekday they start throwing everyone out of pool at 9 even though closing time is 10 and on weekends they close the gym at 8 2) Gym is charging 75 pounds per month that is too costly , if you are taking such amount just be little flexible for your client 3) On holidays gym is not informing us about the updating timings in advance, so that we can plan in advance 4) Trainers are just stand there they will not even help in heavy set, unless you paymore on pt 5) There is no machine like pec fly and they have like 20 tread mills 6) It is impossible to workout in peak hours, everyone is hogging machines while chatting on their phones 7) When any machine beaks down it will never be fixed

Waseem Sadiq 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Very good gym, Central location, ample parking. The coaches are fantastic, they are very motivating. Coach Elder took care of my wife and myself for orientation we were both very happy with the time and care he took showing us around the machines and the exercises to do on them giving us both and individual plan. Top service. The kids love the pool also - we've taken them a couple of times and the changing rooms and facilities make it easy with kids. Toddler pool also has toys.

Duncan Wallace 2 years ago

Positive experience: The spa pool has been closed permanently due to energy crisis but that seems like an excuse as it was out of order before and it looks like they don't want to run it. Certain things showing their age the sauna isn't really well controlled temperature or hot enough for most. Ceiling above pool showing air vent dirt from age. Many showers need renovation, gym in good condition though at times classes fill much of the free space when there are empty rooms down the hall.

Ross Milne 2 years ago

Negative experience: I have been a member at this Nuffield Health gym for over 3 years now. Staff are always friendly but the gym has been neglected for years. So many machines break often and lay that way for weeks. On top of that there is an over intake of members and makes a workout near impossible at peaks times.

Fantastic experience: Excellent facilities!

Andrew S 2 years ago

Negative experience: Extremely unfriendly and unprofessional staff. Specifically a PT called Ian Henderson who has the ego the size of a bus. Gym is quite small too. I suggest going to the omni instead at its 3 times the size and the staff are actually nice people who want to help instead of trying to belittle you. The staff at fountain park behave the way I would expect to be treated at an edinburgh leisure gym. And even then I wouldn’t be happy being treated that way. Not worth the money. Even the management were terrible at de-escalation and resolving the issue. Avoid at all costs. Alternatively go down and book a session with Ego Ian to experience it all for yourself.

Negative experience: I walked 25 mins to try this Nuffield gym for swimming only to be told "we don't offer towels here but you maybe be able to buy one at the vending machine." The vending machine is empty. I've never ever had a gym does this without stating clearly anywhere on their website. Very very disappointed.

Josie 2 years ago

Negative experience: I usually go to the Omni Nuffield but tried Fountainpark. Tired looking, jacuzzi not in operation during winter months because it’s too expensive to run, no towels and pool was full of kids with only one narrow swimming lane in operation!

Fantastic experience: One of the best place to train in Edinburgh, have lot of different staff and great selection of training machine and lot of weight

Benjamin G 2 years ago

Positive experience: Gym itself is well equipped and large, however, multiple machines have been out of order for weeks on end. There is a wide variety of classes, but they get booked up quickly. Pool, steam room and sauna are all great. Changing rooms could use a refresh, especially showers where mould is starting to form. Would expect a towel service at the price point. Overall, a conveniently located gym, with free parking (if that's of importance), lots of racks and choice of machines and free weights. Extensive cardio section. Cost of membership is on the steeper side.

MLT C 2 years ago

Negative experience: Been going here for years, its deteriorated during this time. Machines lay broken and out of use for months on end. There is 1 bench press and a small free weights room. It seems oversubscribed with memberships so you can't use much unless you go in the early or late hours. Someone had left barbell plates by the squat rack and after I used the rack I got passively aggressive confronted by a PT saying "you gonna leave me to pick up your plates" while turning and walking away, even though they were there before I started using the machine. Really annoyed me that, so enjoy your 1 star. EDIT 04/05/23: Jacuzzis have now been removed from the facility to save money. Paper towel machines have now been removed also so you just have to sweat on things now. "Our modern club is more than just a gym, offering you the best facilities, services and wellbeing experts so that you can enjoy an exceptional fitness experience." For an upmarket and self describing "exceptional" gym and at the price point this gym is highly disappointing.

Felix Bottomley 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Been a member here for just over a year and is an excellent gym and has great amenities such as a pool, steam room, jacuzzi and sauna which is always really nice to use after a work out. The staff are always really polite and helpful.

Victoria Anderson 3 years ago

Negative experience: Appalling company! From the gym maintenance, pool side and shower room hygiene to their customer service - there are honestly very few good things I can say about this club. Gym equipment is out of order for months on end. No/v poor air conditioning in the gym. Slimy, smelly, mouldy showers (no matter what time of day it is!) When I wanted to cancel I had to give them a month notice. Which is daft, but fine. But to then keep charging me monthly after my notice was up?! That's taking a mick!

Fantastic experience: I've been a member for a couple of months now. I like the instructors at group classes and gym. Good quality equipment as you would expect. I also love saunas. Can't think of any negatives. I wish there was a bit more classes, but to be honest I always manage to find one that works for me.

Justina T 3 years ago

Negative experience: Simply too overpriced for what it is. They have accepted too many people for the size of it, can never get into classes, unless you can run there within 30mins when a place on the waiting list opens up. Some classes (e.g. body pump) use weights, but are so fast paced people end up doing the moves in extremely bad form and the instructors never help or correct them. Gym floor area is really small and not a lot of benches and squat racks for the amount of people. The cafe seems nice, but because of opening hours no use at all to anyone with a 9-5. Switched to the gym at murrayfield which is more spacious, has a great app (no need for a separate card to access gym) and lots of classes with spaces available for a third of the price.

Jimena González 3 years ago

Positive experience: No es muy grande, pero tiene todo lo que puedes necesitar, además de tener la libertad de usar los espacios y el equipo libremente, el único detalle es que la cafetería la cierran temprano

Georgy Word Righter 3 years ago

Negative experience: Apart from mainly friendly staff- one suggested I find another gym in the area, I have been massively disappointed. Impossible to book the few classes I need as gym allows block booking -8 day notice then tell you 35 mins beforehand that a space is available if able to access the ‘wait’ list .Also . V bad experience in pool ;aggressive selfish entitlement pervasive and unsafe when children allowed to see the lanes as play areas. This Gym as pointed out by other reviewers over promises and under delivers- badly resourced and aimed at a certain demographic...New app/booking meant to ease up attendance (!) yet today email accused me of not turning up when I did....using bits of paper as roster for class attendees doesn't really cut it...am blocked from booking for a week and do I care anymore...

Negative experience: One of the reasons I joined was for group exercises, but everything is always fully booked, with a massive waiting list, leaving me with 1 option of everything they advertise. I think they have over sold the gym, too many people, too little resources. EDIT: I now revise this to 1 star from 2, because nevermid the classes constantly being fully booked. There are some nice classes, in the MIDDLE of the frikken day. I can't go to gym at 10am in the morning.

Negative experience: They have one single flat bench rack Gets a bit old waiting half an hour to start your workout at busy times. Think it’s time for a change

Fantastic experience: Just visited. Amy hosted me really well. She took me to the whole center. It includes gym, swimming, yoga and dancing classes too. They have discount for students. They are offering free membership for december

Negative experience: The staff that cleans the male locker is certainly the rudest I ever met, also I was disappointed because I had left my flask there last week and it was never returned to reception, you would think staff would be more considerate with forgotten items

Positive experience: Would’ve given 4.5* stars, but not an option. Lovely facility that needs minor upgrades in part hence the lack of 5*. Reception team always have a warm welcome (rare in many clubs I attend), and Daniel in the PT team is an outstanding trainer. Can’t recommend him enough. Big, well equipped gym, great range of classes and nice pool that should be avoided at weekends. Turns into a bit of a crèche. 4 hour parking a huge bonus…

Negative experience: Updated - was previously 4 stars. Having been a loyal customer for over 6 years unfortunately the facilities continue to be on a massive downward trend, yet the prices continue to rise. I mainly use the facility for swimming. With the increase in paid swimming lessons (which block off either a half of the pool, or two thirds) it’s now impossible to get a proper swim in and often have to share a single lane with 5-8 others of mixed abilities. It’s no fun for anyone and a small pool of this size cannot accommodate multiple lessons at a time. Having provided feedback I was told this pool is a “spa pool not designed for proper swimming and I should try the Omni centre”. Saving grace is the location and to be fair, staff are super friendly.

Positive experience: I’ve been a member for a few years and the experience has been getting worse. The gym itself is good, decent amount of space and plenty of cardio machines. With the pool area it seems like there is a maintenance issues on a weekly basis. Recent problems have been with shower temperatures, the spa pool, the main pool, sauna, steam room and the mens swimsuit dryer. The entire pool area could do with an upgrade. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Fantastic experience: Very clean swimming pool, not far from town. Also the gym is fully equipped and the showers wides and hot. Probs one of the best in town but is not the cheapest gym in town
