Our comment from FitFit UK about Places Gym Edinburgh:

Places Gym Edinburgh offers a welcoming and friendly atmosphere with excellent staff who are eager to assist. Many users have praised the knowledgeable team as well as the variety of fitness equipment available, making it suitable for all fitness levels. The gym features:

  • Private shower and changing cubicles
  • Wide selection of Les Mills classes
  • Clean and well-maintained facilities
  • Good accessibility with reasonable pricing

However, some members have expressed concerns about the gym's size and the limited availability of changing facilities. The current setup includes only six unisex changing rooms, which can lead to overcrowding during peak hours. Additionally, some users reported issues with the gym’s website where they experienced delays in membership sign-ups and cancellations. Although many enjoy the overall environment, the gym might not be suitable for everyone during busy times. Overall, Places Gym Edinburgh is regarded as a decent option for those looking for a friendly, well-kept gym with quality equipment, albeit with some areas needing improvement.

Fantastic experience: I've really enjoyed using the gym, having not had a membership anywhere for many years. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. Plenty of quality fitness equipment for all my needs. Private shower and changing cubicles. Never too busy at the times I can fit around my work commitments. Would highly recommend it to anyone.

Negative experience: I bought a membership at the Places Gym. After visiting the gym first time I cancelled my membership. The Gym looks fine. Small, but well equipped for it’s size. However there are no changing rooms. You have to change in the bathroom. There are six. I went i to all of them and the whole bathroom was wet because of the shower and some people doesn’t leave the toilet nice after they use it. You can’t change properly. You have to bring your own lock for the lockers. I emailed to the Customer Service office to cancel my membership. I never got a reply back from them so I went up to the gym to ask is anything been processed yet? At the reception they confirmed that the process has been started. Why is it so hard to send a reply? The website is awful. Slow and feel insecure. When I bought my membership I had to do my payment 3 times because the site always crashed. After the 3rd time I got my receipt but the website still said I have to pay again. It showed my membership live but didn’t see my purchase. I wouldn’t recommend this gym at all. Which is a shame because it could be a good gym. It’s in a good location, looks modern and decent but it isn’t. And btw, who put the toilet paper holder behind the toilet?

Positive experience: The Staff Is Amazing And very friendly. Unfortunately Poor value for the Money. Over 30 £ a month for the equipment available and opening hours is way too much comparing to other options in town. Broken equipment.. takes ages to fix..

Fantastic experience: Great classes on offer taught by amazing trainers. Staff are super friendly and helpful, and the equipment is great too! I love going here and highly recommend it :)

Lenka Birosikova 3 years ago

Positive experience: Quite small space if you lift, one squat rack and one platform for deadlifts which were occupied all the time. It was crowded and the air was horrible. Might be good for cardio or other type of training… The location is ok and the gym was very clean.

Christopher Walker 3 years ago

Positive experience: Really enjoying this gym, and it's a relaxed environment which is perfect for a gym beginner like myself. There is plenty of equipment and I've never seen it too crowded! The shower facilities aren't great, due to them being a wet room style and in the same room as the toilet. The floors are often soaked when I go in, but I tend to shower at home so it doesn't bother me as much. Otherwise I can't fault it! Does anyone know if you can use the gym after hours? I've noticed there is a fob outside but not sure if you can actually go in when it's not officially open.

Negative experience: We went to sign up with my four floormates yesterday. There was a girl at the front desk but she didn't almost give us any information. There was no client and I wasn't busy. Unfortunately the website was freezing and confusing, we decided to sign up for another gym as there is little interest in serving customers there.

Fantastic experience: A lot of people complaining about the amount of lockers and changing rooms, I've been using this gym for around a year now. I've always been able to find a free locker and/or changing room. Along with friendly staff, great equipment and a sterile clean environment, I think the gym is great.

Positive experience: It's a basic gym but they have really thought about how to keep people safe, cleaned on the hour, lots of sanitizer and wipes and booking system. The website and app are truly awful but the staff are great and it's nice to be able to book in and avoid queuing

William Humphreys 5 years ago

Negative experience: STAY AWAY. The website/app is so bad you can’t actually book a gym session. I joined a couple days ago but have already had to cancel and switch gym. Absolutely no customer support either. Bordering on illegal what they’re doing, scamming people of their money. Look at the reviews on the App Store for their booking app if you want to see what it’s like. Terrible terrible terrible

Hi William apologies for your frustrations with our booking system. Unfortunately we were experiencing difficulties last week from Wednesday, but the issue is resolved now. We would love to try and rectify your experience with us. Please email our General Manager Paul on [email protected] to discuss further. Many thanks Natalie

Positive experience: Staff are great, equipment is good and I always enjoy going to Places Gym. My only feedback would be that the space could be used better to accommodate extra weights benches as these are always jammed. Delighted to be back at Places since it has reopened - the place has been immaculate, with constant cleaning from all staff members.

Fantastic experience: Totally underrated (3.6 stars at the moment of review) gym. Great price/value with equipment available for any type of training (weights or functional). I've appreciated a busy street view from a treadmill. Nice staff. I've not attended it during rush hour (apparently at 6 pm) and have never had to wait for a changing room.

Chris Walters 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: This gym is one of the best I've ever been to. The staff are very polite. The equipment is clean and I rarely have trouble getting what I want. There's copious free-weights and a space to work with the bar doing deadlifts or whatever takes your fancy. Plenty of cardio machines. There are even some cool non-standard bits of gear if you're trying to switch up your work out. There are nice showers and lockers too but you need to bring your own lock or buy one from them. I'm on the £25 a month membership but if you're willing to commit to a year or are a student it's cheaper.

Barbora Ďuricová 5 years ago

Positive experience: Nice and cozy gym, average gym equipment, but everything you need, plus crossfit equipment too, so you can make your training more fun and functional. Can't forget t to mention classes and the gym is alsi pretty tidy. Only downside is, that it's not made for masses of people, so during peek periods, you can wait for majority of the stations. Once I even had to leave for 20 minutes, as there was no cardio machine free, but at least I've done my shopping in nearby Sainsbury's lol. Give it a try at least for those couple of free entries!

T B 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: This place seems to be swarmed with reviews written by simpletons who can't even type in basic sentences. I'm giving it 5 stars because for my needs I can't fault it whatsoever. I either walk 10 minutes to get here or change into my gym stuff at work and jump off the bus home at the nearest stop. The weights section looks decent enough and I'm planning to use it once I get my basic level of fitness back up. Meanwhile, there are plenty of treadmills available any time I've visited, which is usually between 3pm and 6pm during the week and early evening on the weekends. I haven't felt the need to since joining, but I did used to enjoy the odd late night run at Pure years ago, if I was simply too busy to work out during the day but could sneak in half an hour at 11pm or so and be showered and in bed by midnight. Maybe they will extend the evening hours at a later date? Worth noting that there aren't tonnes of changing rooms and stuff if you need them, by the sound of others' feedback. Like I said before this doesn't bother me at all. The staff are all perfectly friendly, the people naming and 'shaming' women working here for not being talkative enough sound like incels. All in all no sensible complaints to be had whatsoever.

Flourish 5 years ago

Negative experience: If you are looking for a clean gym with friendly staff, this isn't the right place for you. The idea behind "Places gym" is that, it is suppose to be a welcoming and non-judgmental environment for everyone yet the staff is trying so hard to make you feel uncomfortable. In the past 2 months, I have forgotten my gym card 2 times so I had to ask a member of staff at the reception to let me in. Both times Sherree Donaldson was at the reception desk and she was incredibly rude and dismissive towards me. She doesn't even bother replying back to members when they says hello or goodnight to her. Although other members of staff are not as rude as Sherree, they unfortunately are not any better. Most of them are just talking among themselves all the time and you have to wait for them to stop talking with each other if you need any assistance. Surprisingly, there are 2 male PT's who actually try to talk and smile at people, but the rest just like to hang about at the reception area, cracking jokes among each other and blocking the way of members getting in and out of the gym. Apart from the staff, in the last 6 months, although there have been massive positive improvements to the gym itself, the toilets are still very dirty all the time and there is a dog running around at the gym, especially at night times! The location of the gym and the monthly fee is quite reasonable but the staff members need training as their actions and the way they present themselves is really shocking and unprofessional.

Victoria Veber 6 years ago

Positive experience: In my experience, the best thing this gym has is their instructors. Although all the staff is really friendly, a special shout-out to Adam, Joya and Alex are in order! Also, they have been the most consistent instructors since I've joined the gym a few months ago. I think it's worth mentioning when people are great at their job, particularly in an industry where the personal engagement is so important Adam is a great instructor, committed to the classes and you can tell he enjoys what he's doing. That's really a plus when looking for high intensity classes! I really enjoy his circuits and BoxExercise classes. They're not only intense, but also good fun and exercises vary from class to class, so I really enjoy the challenge. It would be great if BoxExercise could become a permanent class in the schedule! Joya is a really good instructor, super patient and encourages people in her BodyPump classes to go the extra mile and make the most of the work out, also taking care of the technique in each exercise. It's good to have her back! Alex has a contagious energy throughout all her classes and is always really well predisposed to answer questions and look after the people in the classes. It's great to see that she's really very good at all the classes she does and no matter how many in a row she has had, she's always smiling and engaging people to enjoy the classes, as well.

Hi Edvinas, we're aware of the issues with our online contact us form which is currently with our website developers to be resolved. We did offer to call you yesterday so you could discuss your concerns with the General Manager which you didn't wish to do. Unfortunately our automatic door system went down at 7.30am yesterday which is why after you scanned your card the doors didn't open, should you have pushed the door manually you would have been able to access the gym. On our part, should the doors have any future issues we will ensure a poster is displayed to communicate this. We have also reviewed out CCTV and can see that you arrived at 9.15am and left at 9.16am, during this short window our reception manager was away from the desk with another customer. We apologies you have had a negative experience with us and I can confirm your membership will be cancelled from today. Thanks Natalie

Negative experience: AVOID THIS PLACE I was not impressed with the gym or lack of changing facilities, so opted to cancel my membership. I was then contacted by a third party company called Harlands who were demanding £49.99 - for the membership fee plus a fine for late payment. I went into the gym and they confirmed that my membership was cancelled, so i rang harlands to explain. After 2 months and numerous calls (you are on hold for 30 mins before they connect you to a person) harlands had still not confirmed my membership was cancelled saying that the gym would not respond. They then threatened to add another £25 to the amount i owed. For an easy life i just paid the £49.99, with the assurance that they would never contact me again. This almost seems like a scam - "pay up or we will keep charging you for our incompetence" There are equally cheap gyms elsewhere, with better facilities.

Places Gym Edinburgh
Places Gym Edinburgh

Hi Andy, thank you for your feedback. I have sent your comments to our management team who will address this with Harlands as we expect them to treat our customers with the same respect as we would ourselves. I do hope this is resolved now but if you do need anything further from us please do not hesitate to contact us directly to [email protected]. Thanks Natalie

Aga x 6 years ago

Negative experience: Never again. First they changed the opening date twice. After it was opened the main door was unfinished for some time, cards didn't work, everyone could just walk in, wi-fi never worked (I stopped asking about it after 3 months). I thought I would join classes, put my name down for a zumba class, the instructor didn't arrive, receptionist had no idea why. According to others it wasn't the first time. Then one day I was going through the door when the person walking before me didn't hold it for me. I put my hand forward to stop the door from closing but it was already moving so fast and with such a force that pushed my hand towards the frame and closed trapping my finger inside. The door stopper was clearly not working. I went to reception with blood coming from my hand and I was given a few plasters. No first aider to see me although I suggested one, no accident form. However, I was given a towel because so much blood was coming down... I went to hospital that night and xray proved a broken finger. I filled in a contact form online explaining what happened and asking for someone to contact me. No answer. I sent another email. Again - no answer. I had to go there to get manager's email (unavailable online) After I emailed the manager he replied he was going to investigate it as a matter of urgency. I week later I had to remind him I was still waiting for him to get in touch. Then I was told they kindly decided to freeze my account! Great gesture, they knew I couldn't use the gym anyway as it was going to take weeks for my hand to heal. I said I wasn't happy with that as I was already paying for the month I was injured and could not use the gym. Paul, the manager said I would get a refund for that month I couldn't use it. However, I said I thought I should get a refund for the full time I was with them (4 months) because the whole experience was so bad. The answer was: NO. According to Paul I cannot get it because: they had a first aider on shift, just didn't come to see me, they didn't fill in the accident form but they will do it next time and since the accident their contractors tighten the door and now it works fine. I would never recommend that place. You can get a gym membership just 15min up the road in the centre for much less with the same equipment and classes. This place just doesn't seem to be ready and they don't care about their memebers

Places Gym Edinburgh
Places Gym Edinburgh

Hi Aga I'm so sorry to hear this was your experience with Places Gym. I have raised the treatment of your incident with the doors with our management team to ensure some refresher training is provided to the reception team as a matter of urgency. In regards to your other comments, unfortunately due to factors out of our control we did have to delay opening twice. We can only promote the date that is provided to us by the building company and if they experience step backs unfortunately there nothing we can do about it. The issues with the doors and entry system was connected to the WiFi not being live. The Wifi is active now with both doors working as intended. I hope your finger is healing well and you can get active again soon. Thanks Natalie

Fantastic experience: Small but I like it. Friendly staff, enough equipments for me and great classes.

Miguel Pérez Menéndez 6 years ago

Negative experience: The equipment is good and new. The gym is clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful...but it is not big enough. You can't expect anyone to enjoy a workout (or even try to seriously workout) when the area where you can pull weights gets packed as soon as there are three people exercising, not to mention having to wait for the equipment you want to be available. Sorry guys, definitely not big enough. So far i left twice because of how frustrating i found the whole situation, the question is whether i will be back or not.

Positive experience: A happy if disorganised place. Bookings almost impossible without visiting or phoning. Even then no guarantee that you're in the class. Staff very keen to help and support.

Tristan Ley 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: Honestly not sure why people are so up in arms about the changerooms. When I first came here I was expecting like, one communal changeroom or something. There are six changerooms and two bathrooms available, but if an excessive amount of changing space is what you value most in a gym, perhaps this isn’t your spot. But it’s big, has brand new, high quality equipment and is sparkling clean. For the buck it’s a phenomenal space - maybe try changing at home or just not being such a baby.

A 6 years ago

Negative experience: Ok so held of writing this as was a new gym in October (it's now janurary) so was giving time for what i was told "equipment to be delivered". So pros of the gym "short and sweet" - -got loads of treadmills if that's your thing -got a skill mill which is cool - good deadlifiting platform with decent weights -main one for me is location and student price (cheaper alternatives in Edinburgh thou) -dumbbells go up to 40kg which is ok I suppose. CONS -As other reviews the changing facilities is simply stupid. -very unknowledgeable staff - sorry but if they used a gym never mind their own they would have alot more knowledge on equipment and what they have and most of all what's lacking. -Only have Olympic weight bars (20kg) so no curl bars, lighter straight bars etc so difficult trying to mix up exercises and sets plus difficult teaching my partner the foundations of lifting. -Cables have zero equipment (been told over 2 months ago waiting on ropes, straight bar, seated row chin bar etc. That also goes for the seated lat machine. -NO WIFI -Music is played of someone's version of free Spotify (half way through lifting get a meerkat insurance or centra advertisement blazing over the speakers) - even the location of equipment ( they have pull up bar right underneath their roof fixtures so it cannot be used to do any form of pull ups). -simple things such as a clock to time yourself, they have a tv at the weights that has never been turned on. And was promised this really good scale that gives you everything (seen the exact same one in Lidl on Easter road for 19.99). I don't use the classes but my partner has been to a few with an outside instructor taking the spin who apparently is awsome and really motivating - but be careful alot of classes are virtual with a DVD running on a tv for you to follow. Overall with so much competition in Edinburgh such as "The Gym" at waverly at a cheaper price don't understand how they can compete - literally only for price and location I remain a member but I also use The Gym at waverly to do some proper training. Scary enough the places is a franchise with gyms across the UK so can't really blame a new business or teething problems. Really hope they sort some of this stuff out as could be successful with location. Hope this helps make your decision of joining or not easier.

Positive experience: Positives: - Reasonable priced; - Decent equipment; and - Not too busy if you avoid peak hours. Negatives: - Air conditioning (the place is like a steam room when it's busy. Please do something about this ASAP); - Lack of some basic equipment (e.g. EZ bar) in favour of more niche equipment (e.g. cable ski machine) - Lack of plate loaded leg press & lat pulldown (they have cable versions); and - Limited locker availability.

Negative experience: I really want to like this gym as it is conveniently located for me, but there are so many issues. The two times I've been to classes - first time the instructor didn't turn up, and the second time the class had been cancelled last minute. There are no kettle bells or smaller weights in the free weight section, and the space is just quite cramped in general. As others have mentioned the changing rooms situation is bizarre as there are just six toilet/showers in which you have to get changed. Staff seem a little clueless too. Sorry Places Gym , I was really looking forward to you opening but this has been a big disappointment.

Cynthia Mathews 6 years ago

Negative experience: This gym is clean and the equipment is all brand new and very well selected. I wish I could like this place more, as the location is great, but it has a lot of problems. I have registered for 5 classes in the past month and two have been canceled at the last moment. There are no changing rooms- just six bathrooms and some lockers in the hallway. The actual gym area is very small- there are two long narrow rooms that make up the entire gym. If it ever gets busy it is very hard to navigate.

Negative experience: So I signed up back in JULY over the phone with manager Paul as their online booking system was not working at the time. The offer was no joining fee and first month 5 quid which he set up a direct debit for. The opening date was being delayed and I contacted Paul via email we've been talking trough and I got back an email saying he has blocked my messages. Shocking service. Not to mention the generic customer support email also didn't help, as they just stopped replying to me when I demanded to get my log in details or any details about my membership for that matter.

Positive experience: Staff are extremely friendly. Good choice of different classes. Interesting and different gym space compared to most gyms you'll find in the city centre. Extremely respectable amount of space and equipment for the price. Free weights area has everything you'd need; can get a little tight with not many benches available but it's not something you can't work around. Opening times are a little iffy; 6pm is very, very early for the weekends so it doesn't suit people who go later. Update: gym promised discounts multiple times but online system has prevented me and my girlfriend from managing this. This has been over 6 months now so not likely to follow up on it now ! I would hate to be in a position where there is any billing issues as it seems impossible to contact the office direct

Fantastic experience: Update: From 4* to 5* A few months later and I absolutely love this gym. It is very practical and convenient for me. I always change in the office and shower at home, so I have never had to use the shower facilities. I also signed up for personal training sessions with Campbell who has been my personal 'Mr.Push It!' This is the best investment ever. He is very professional, knowledgeable and encouraging. His interpersonal skills are amazing and he pushes me to my limit and helps me achieve everything I need to achieve within an hour. Gone are the days when I used to spend hours pacing around the gym and fiddling with my phone. Thanks Campbell! ------------------------------------ I had my first workout today and I am basing my feedback on that. I joined this gym because I'm tired if paying so much money for substandard gyms; so I decided that a basic gym around the corner would do just fine. This gym is convenient if you live in the area as you can just pop in and out. I live in the neighborhood and don't need to use the changing or shower facilities; so don't mind the current arrangements but I can see how it would be an issue for some of the members. There are a few minor changes that definitely need to be made; The main station area has a hard wooden type of flooring which is very uncomfortable for kneeling on if you are doing abdominal cable excercises. The small mats can only be found in the main studio downstairs and it is absolutely ridiculous for members to have to go downstairs for mats. This won't be possible if there is an ongoing class in the studio. So it would make more sense if there were additional mats in the main gym area for anyone who needs them. There is only one studio room downstairs and members should not be allowed to plug in their own devices into the main speakers for their own workouts. This is an area for stretching and meditation, so the last thing we should be listening to is someone else's YouTube video tutorial. Members who want to use their own devices for exercising should use wireless headphones to listen in. Please provide disinfectant sprays to wipe down machines.

Negative experience: Absolutely average. Bearly enough space to change. The lockers are horrible they close on your hands and makes it difficult to organize. The gym space is quite limited, it lacks some lifting materials. The only reason i go it is because it is very close to my flat. Otherwise i wouldnt

Hi Luiza sorry to hear this but thank you for your feedback. We will assess the lockers over the coming months and make amends if needed. What additional lifting kit would you be looking for? Thanks Natalie

Negative experience: Front door does not open automatically and this is only the beginning of the outstanding problems at Places Gym. There are only 6 UNISEX changing rooms meaning that there can be a wait to change, and that is only if the changing rooms are operational. The changing rooms provided mean that you can change within the shower unit (wet) or next to the toilet (unhygienic). Was informed that classes scheduled would not be running that day and this was before entering the main gym area. Music was blasting louder than some clubs, equipment was used to cover leaks reducing the range of stations further and the guide did not seem to know what the equipment would actually train. I could see no other staff on the floor either. Best to avoid, there are far better options out there with suitable changing facilities, classes and helpful staff.

Positive experience: I would be extremely careful before joining this morning 23rd November the gym was due to open at 6am at 7.10 still none of the staff have arrived. Extremely poor given it is only the second week it has been open

Negative experience: Not entirely sure how anyone thought that six unisex changing rooms/showers were enough for a gym. Often only one available and that's before the classes schedule has fully started. Great if you live next door, not great if you have to go straight to work.

Negative experience: The design of the lockers and changing rooms is terrible! And this is a new build gym... You get just 6 unisex shower/changing rooms and about 20 lockers. Everyone can understand that will never be enough mostly at pick time. For this price you can find much better in Edinburgh. Avoid.

Hi, thanks for feedback. We are reviewing the high usage of lockers and looking to install a suitable solution in the near future.
