University of Bristol Indoor Sports Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: In my shoes there are rubber crumbs. In my shorts, there are rubber crumbs. Slowly, my hand tranforms into a squelching mass of spongy ink-black beads...
Hi Chamod, thank you for the 5* review. We look forward to welcoming you again!
Negative experience: Decent equipment and stuff, but very sexist. why is there 2-3 hours a week where it is women's only and there are no men's only sessions. So many times I forget and i waste my time going to the gym.
Thank you for your feedback. We are an inclusive community and work with our customers, through their feedback, to ensure our programmes and services are fit for our users. If you would like to suggest additions to our services please complete our customer feedback form and this will then be passed to our team lead in this area for review. Feedback can be provided via the feedback form on the 'Contact us' page of our website (bristol.ac.uk/sport).
Fantastic experience: Large two-storey gym with plenty of equpment as well as friendly and knowledgable staff. Can get quite busy at times.
Hi Ali, thank you for the 5* review. We look forward to welcoming you again!
Negative experience: The gym is class but the showers just don’t work and were literally in a disgusting state with slime all over the floor..
Hi Rufus, thank you for your feedback. We are currently undergoing a period of maintenance in relation to our shower facilities. The installation of the new more energy and water efficient boilers will positively contribute to the University's action on the climate emergency. We will, however, report the cleanliness issue highlighted to our Operations Team to investigate. If you would like to provide any additional information for our continuous improvement, you can submit this via our online enquiry form (found on the Contact us page of our website Bristol.ac.uk/sport).
Fantastic experience: Great place good classes and gym
Thank you Lars - we're pleased to hear you enjoy our gym and fitness class programme!
Fantastic experience: Absolutely lovely.
Fantastic experience: The dude who worked reception last night (friday night) needs a pay rise, top man, v good customer skills.
Thanks for taking the time to leave this review, Joe. Your feedback is so important to us and we have passed the message along to Andrea. Thank you.
Fantastic experience: Just visited to have a look, it looked good and not too crowded on a Sunday. Plenty of facilities.
Hi Tim, many thanks for taking the time to leave a review! You're very welcome to come and try the facilities without committing to a full membership - we offer access on a pay-as-you-go basis.
Negative experience: I paid 10 quid for a day pass and then couldn't use anything, and I'm not even exaggerating. It was so busy it was like sardines. I had to make up a workout on the mats in the corner basically using no equipment. Why did they let me buy a pass when they're obviously so over subscribed? Why didn't they tell me it was rammed? They need to cap their members, I've never had such a bad gym experience as this.
Positive experience: Generall good staff except for one. Good facilities and modern courts for indoor sports.
Hi Derrick, thank you for taking the time to leave a review - we're grateful for your feedback. Fantastic experience: Sometimes very crowded so always have back up plan and back up back up plans but overall i think it is quite good enough. Still, i should say there are definitely area for improvement
Thank you for your feedback, Pham. There are quieter gym times (mid-afternoon or weekends) if you have the flexibility to train at other times. We have also recently started running bookable Quiet Hours gym sessions, which are limited capacity, so the gym will be less busy during these sessions. I hope this helps! Fantastic experience: Bristol is iAmong the top universities in the world .
Positive experience: Nice university sports hall. Visited for a Badminton England event. Only downside is limited balcony seating.
Negative experience: Rhiannon price Jones - absolutely horrible experience with her. Stressed out of my mind with uni and this lady tried charging me £7 to enter the gym despite having a membership… cost of living crisis? I haven’t got enough money for lunch let alone paying £7 for a membership I pay for. Alongside this another lady tried to say I called her a witch?! Really not the experience I’d hope for during exam season. This fiasco wasted about 15 minutes of my time. Remove these inept workers with no regard for students feelings and emotions. Fools
Negative experience: Still too crowded after after adding equipment. I think overall not much was added and the layout hasn’t changed enough to prevent it being overcrowded. With the amount of memberships at a regular gym price, we should get the space and equipment offered from a regular gym. Maybe think about increasing the space used for the gym over the summer.
Negative experience: Tried to have a look round but was told we couldn't
Hi Emma, we're sorry to hear you were turned away. Please contact Vicki at [email protected] who will arrange a time for you to visit our facilities.
Negative experience: Students treat the place like a zoo. Weights left everywhere, equipment treated awfully, zero regard for basic gym conduct. Strongly recommended avoiding for general public.
Negative experience: Not too badly equipped but it always seems crowded. Students, particularly, dont have a set schedule so regardless of the day or time, it's relatively busy. Plus, the men's changing rooms are more like student dorms. Bags and coats literally everywhere and lockers are always full. I've used uni gyms in other cities and they seem far better organised/cleaner/more inclusive (e.g. for external clients as well as students/staff) than this. shame because it's more affordable than other gyms
Negative experience: Lots of equipment and it’s good quality, however it’s just so incredibly busy all of the time. From 3-7pm almost every piece of equipment is being used to the point where you really can’t train - I’ve been in and just come straight back out because I can’t physically stand in the free weights area or get any dumbbells. Outside of those hours you’re able to train but still extremely busy so expect to just have to do random exercises based on whatever equipment you can get. Overall great gym just is so busy that you can never really use it.
Negative experience: equipment is extremely average and wearing down majorly. At busy times the gym is so small that everyone's stuffed in cheek by jowl. The price for membership has nearly doubled in the past 2 years with absolutely zero change to the services and equipment provided. Absolute shambles for the Uni
We're sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with us, and thank you for your feedback. We are pleased to share that 70% of our gym equipment was replaced with new, in late December 2022, and we have increased the number of weight plates and bars available, by 30% in line with increasing demand. Our membership offerings were reviewed early in 2022, including a consultation period with members and visitors who had previously engaged in some activity with Sport, Exercise and Health. Following the external feedback received and a series of internal discussions and approvals, we launched an amended offer in August 2022. While we aim to keep our member costs as low as possible, an increase in price during the summer was necessary due to the increasing costs of the provision of our services. If you have any specific feedback as to where you feel that the service does not meet your needs then we would love to hear about where we could make improvements. Feedback can be provided via the enquiry form on our website 'Contact Us' page.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities with lovely staff and a friendly atmosphere.
Negative experience: so busy!!!! I've been throughly put off of going to the university gym because it makes me feel stressed how many people are there at one time, can't ever follow a workout plan because the equipment I need isn't free for a long time
Positive experience: The sports hall has been updated and it looks great
Many thanks for taking the time to leave a positive review - we're pleased to hear it!
Fantastic experience: Work visit, but great facility
Thank you for your excellent review, we're pleased you enjoyed your visit!
Fantastic experience: Part of the University of Bristol, the Indoor Sports Centre offers a large, two storey, modern gym, 3 fitness studios, and a double sports hall with a 360° viewing balcony. The facilities are always clean and the staff are competent and friendly.
Positive experience: Average value for money
Fantastic experience: Calm spacious facility. Lots of choice.
Positive experience: It's aight
Fantastic experience: Love my community activity programme.
Negative experience: They do not treat their customers with respect and seem to be taking the cheapest way out. I would recommend pure gym or the gym group. It is always busy, and have been far from helpful during the pandemic
Hi Edward. We are really sorry to hear that you haven’t had a positive experience at our facilities recently. We would value further feedback so that we can investigate how this may have occurred and take the opportunity to rectify any issues for you. Please feel free to contact our team direct using [email protected]. Best wishes, University of Bristol Sport.
Positive experience: Good, busy, well used.
Negative experience: General poor standard, not the equipment/size but the way it’s run. Constantly full to capacity and busy yet still seem to actively recruit new members, even non-students. Exceptionally hot, especially upstairs. No enforcement of people not putting weights back. Cables often stick which can easily be solved by lubrication every so often yet staff don’t seem to bother. Slow/inable to fix problems, especially from staff at reception who are often rude and simply give you an email address to write your problem to. Offered to be part of a focus group to highlight these issues yet was never contacted.
Negative experience: Unfortunately not for me. Very cramped with people using floor space wherever they could find it. Hard to bench press without people coming precariously close to the bar. Same can be said in the squat racks. A mish mash of free weights scattered all over the place. Three or four bench press stations but really bad build quality. Bench pads very sloppy so gripping the bench with your upper body very difficult without any chalk. No trap bar or SSB. Probably ok for absolute beginners. Disappointed considering there was a refurb recently.
Positive experience: What you could expect from a university sports hall
Positive experience: Great place to play, good facilities and staff always helpful.
Positive experience: It's always full of people
Negative experience: Far too busy, even early morning and late at night. The time saved by its convenient location will all be lost queuing for equipment - go elsewhere.
Negative experience: Too busy all the time, staff are slow to solve issues, good price for students and lots of equipment but you'll have to wait if you want to use any of it
Positive experience: A lot of stuff for good price but the gym is always so so busy
Positive experience: Great equipment - lots of variety regarding machines and free weights, and lots of it! (5/6 squat racks alone) This gym is well priced and located for University students, well below the price of immediately surrounding gyms such as Anytime Fitness. My criticisms: the opening hours of this gym are OK - closed on Bank Holidays isn't great (I've been spoiled by 24 hour access at Anytime). The gym is really busy at peak times such as the evening, and competition for weights and machines slows down a session significantly.
Fantastic experience: Brand new sports equipment, nice facilities and friendly staff.
Positive experience: Good facility. Only on street parking though
Positive experience: It's nicely located for uni students and has a lot of cardio machines, but the free weights room is always overcrowded.
Positive experience: Fantastic
Fantastic experience: Really good facilities and friendly staff
Positive experience: Good gym, nicely run place
Positive experience: Good basic stuff
Negative experience: The gym is well equipped and has a lot of cardio machines and all the gym it'self is new and clean. However it is horribly overcrowded and there is never any free weight machines or floor space, whatever time of day you go. The layout makes no sense with weight machines in the middle of the cardio and not enough room for floor work. The changing rooms are far too small for the amount of members and there's never lockers free. The staff in the gym are friendly however staff on the desk aren't and never really know what they're doing. Used to love the summer 6 but after getting the monthly membership and the new refurbishment I've been highly disappointed. I try to go to the gym and end up having to leave as there is no machines free or is an uncomfortable cramped atmosphere. Sadly not worth the money at all anymore and now trying to cancel and it's conveniently very difficult to do so although not surprising as the website is difficult to use.
Fantastic experience: Good gym provided for students of the university. Good equipment and facilities available. Membership is affordable.
Positive experience: Well equipped gym, far too busy especially at peak times, virtually impossible to use any equipment during these times
Negative experience: It is an ok gym with a decent choice of equipment. But it can get extremely busy. At peak hours you can wait also 15 minutes before being able of using some equipment....
Positive experience: Undergoing refurbishment at the moment
Negative experience: The worst place in the university. Their staff is useless and can help you nothing since they do not know how to do most of stuff. And their website sucks as well.
