Galleon Centre, Swimming Pool, Sport and Leisure, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire
Our comment from FitFit UK about Galleon Centre:
The Galleon Centre in Kilmarnock is a versatile and well-equipped sports facility that caters to a wide range of activities, making it a great destination for fitness enthusiasts and families alike. Users have praised the extensive gym facilities, the well-maintained swimming pool, and the variety of classes offered, such as All Action and Pilates. The family-friendly environment is highlighted with features like family changing rooms, a baby pool, and swimming lessons tailored for younger kids.
Visitors have noted the friendly and helpful staff, which enhances the overall experience. The presence of a nice café serving good food and drinks is also a highlight for many. Moreover, the centre is particularly well-situated, making it convenient for local residents.
However, some areas of the Galleon Centre are in need of improvements. The changing rooms have been criticized for their cleanliness and temperature, with comments about occasional unpleasant odors. Additionally, some users have mentioned that certain facilities, such as the sauna and steam room, feel outdated and could use modernization.
Despite these concerns, the Galleon Centre remains a popular choice due to its array of activities, including ice skating and bowling, making it a fantastic place for both relaxation and exercise. Overall, it is regarded as a clean and safe environment for families and individuals looking to stay active.
Galleon Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: I mainly use the gym and occasionally use the swimming pool. The restaurant offers a good selection of food and drinks Always find the staff very helpful and friendly
Positive experience: Helpful staff, clean changing rooms and great swimming pool.
Positive experience: Good gym, Sauna and steam room outdated
Positive experience: Swimming lessons are really good. Family changing rooms with showers. 1 large pool for lanes and open swimming. Small pool used for younger kids and also has flume.
Positive experience: Currently having a facelift. The changing rooms desperately need attention, always too cold after a swim and more often than not smell of wee. Showers are usually cold and turn off too quickly.
Fantastic experience: Covid and flu jab fine no issues
Fantastic experience: I regularly attend the All Action and Pilates classes at the Galleon Leisure Centre. They are excellent with knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructors. The other participants are friendly and the overall experience is really beneficial and enjoyable. Be warned though, it is very difficult to get booked for the Pilates because it is so popular!
Fantastic experience: The galleon is a really good versatile sport centre with an extensive gym, sauna, pool, ice rink and sports halls with a lovely cafe. Highly recommend this place
Fantastic experience: Great place for kids
Negative experience: Over priced. Unhelpful staff. Unhygienic. Won’t be back. Charged an admission fee per person on top of higher than average prices.
Fantastic experience: It's OK
Fantastic experience: Nice place to visit.
Positive experience: just shy of 20 quid for a swim for me n 2 kids, in this day and age of obesity and mental health surely kids would benefit free/or reduced price on holidays, can you also explain why you find the need to charge an admission fee per person and charge for a swim separately you can't do one without the other
Negative experience: The blonde lifeguards is very rude. As she stole our ball and wouldn’t give it back until we left the pool. 5* to Ned he was a nice guy. Other 2 life guards also good. Blonde lifeguard should be gone.
Fantastic experience: what is the youngest age to access the gym?
Fantastic experience: Great gym facilities
Positive experience: The pool as a slide water is at the right temperature for babies I took my temperature check due to young babies, offers different activities. Needs some repairs done which they seem to be aiming to fix.
Fantastic experience: Admission is a bit pricey for spectators if you don't have a membership or even if you just want to go to cafe. Place is clean and has ice rink, swimming pool, gym and sauna
Fantastic experience: Good swimming pool and gym
Negative experience: After telephoning and being told I could pay on arrival then we was told fully booked on arrival told we should of booked online but then n line booked okings is for after about 10 minutes wait they eventually let us in for a swim the venue is dirty and dated too many swimming lessons going on for a ganeral swim the venue needs a good clean up staff a little unsure with customers but like I say lies
Positive experience: To hot to spectate can bearly breath in it .Need a little air-con please.
Fantastic experience: A beautiful 25 meter pool nice clean water for lap swimming. Clean, comfortable and friendly people. Nice coffee shop with lunch available on premises.
Positive experience: Go every sunday for swimming lessons with the wee one, 2 pools family changing facilities, gym and ice rink
Fantastic experience: Great place , clean , staff friendly
Positive experience: It's a nice complex but definitely need a bit of TLC in most areas of the building, it's clean but a lot of tiles & ceilings needs modernised, Since I done the last review, the Galleons had a bit of work done to the corridors, same with the sauna & steamroom area, definitely a improvement, also the Galleon membership is a great deal & definitely worth the £29 a month.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, great for kids' swimming lessons.
Fantastic experience: I was only in the Galleon to give blood as this is the place were the Blood Transfusion Service meet every 3 months as it is a good venue. It is still the same it hasn't changed inside it was ment to get a refurbished but it hasn't happened.
Fantastic experience: I can't praise the skate hire staff member and other skaters at the ice rink enough - the other skaters at the public session included a trainer and a member of the hockey team. A recent visit with my disabled child ended up with my child becoming very dysregulated. Everyone was kind and supportive rather than judgemental or hostile. This makes a world of difference when having to cope with such difficult situations. A heartfelt thank you to all of you.
Negative experience: Pool and changing rooms are an absolute dive.
Fantastic experience: Had a lovely time taking our youngest (just under 2) to use the swimming po today. The baby/kids pool was lovely and warm. There was only the 3 of us in there at the time. The lifeguards kindly brought out a load of wee floats and toys for the baby to play with, and put the wee flume on especially for us/him to use. Really couldnt compliment them enough for that, lovely gesture and we and the wee man had a great time, colleagues were a great example for the place. Thank you to the lifeguards on today around 12/1pm, made our visit great!
Negative experience: POOR VALUE . Sauna and steam room , overpriced and very very dated , 2 pound admission and then 7.20 , admission fee for what exactly ? What else is there ? East Ayrshire council robbing dogs I don’t suppose they factor in that you have to pay for parking anywhere close ,
Fantastic experience: Great place to visit everything under one roof ,from swimming to skating, gymnasium carpet bowling, and cafe .
Positive experience: I was only there for my covid jag
Fantastic experience: I love the galleon Centre so much you can do
Positive experience: Only went here for my vaccination did not use the facilities
Positive experience: Only there gif vaccinations
Positive experience: Always liked the galleon for a.swim don't do the gym, there's badminton courts indoor bowls ice rink but on the day I visited I was in for.my flu jab
Positive experience: Ice skating was good fun
Negative experience: Good choice of activities to do but only thing that lets it down is there is not a 30 minute opinion for people that are either just getting into fitness / sports therefore can't perhaps manage a hour, or people with disabilities or elderly, of course there's nothing you stopping sooner than an hour but should be an option and therefore cheaper as it isn't fair paying for an hour if that's something for what ever reason you can't do.
Negative experience: Pool is fine, if a little mundane The staff are typically rude and unreasonable. It's a shame it's the only pool in the area. Needs a change of management and a change of attitude.
Fantastic experience: We were shown around the whole Centre by a male member of staff. He was excellent, very knowledgeable, very thorough and enthusiastic. A big credit to the staff. Very impressed with the enthusiasm and facilities ... 5 stars.
Negative experience: Skates were horrific normally you go a size up for ice skates I had to go 3 sizes down the ice is nearly impossible to skate on and place really just needs to be updated a lot very run down plus no ice warden on ice rink wee boy fell and hurt his head took them 5 minutes to notice he was crying
Positive experience: Very nice ❤️❤️ just took a dip in the pool here. My only concern was for the “Gavin” guy that was making fun of the guy with the white shorts.
Fantastic experience: Good for a family day at the swimming pool.
Positive experience: It is super good but there are cracks in the big pool and people keep cutting there feet for instance ME
Positive experience: The swimming pool area is in need of serious revamp. Ice rink brilliant & staff always wearing a smile although sometimes takes a while to get through on the phone. Overall it's good having this sports facility
Negative experience: The staff in this centre are so unbelievably rude. Coming a half a hour journey on the bus with 3 children to be told that it needs to be 1 adult to each child. My friend had her 4 year old and I had my two children 3 and 1. The staff told us this is a health and safety policy which was fine but I explained I am more than capable of handling my children. One in a float and one in armbands. The attitude of the two staff and the cleaner were ridiculous. I completely get this is a safety thing but what about single mothers, and mothers with twins?. That was fine they finally agreed to letting us in after explaining but what a hassle. Pool was good, changing rooms are a decent size but staff not so much
Positive experience: Large centrally located Sports Centre.
Negative experience: it’s good but when i was 7 the ice rink melted and turned into water and my dad nearly drowned
Negative experience: Worst leisure centre about. Everything needs upgrading.
Positive experience: Pretty dated in places but Kilmarnock has no other swimming pool or skating rink. Friendly staff and always helpful.
Positive experience: Like stepping back in time whenever you enter. Really good selection of activities with a particularly good gym setup but could do with some modernisation.
Fantastic experience: Awesome place for the gym. Swimming pool, Steam, Sauna, and gym equipment. Refreshment. #gymforhealth #exerciseforhealth #hearthealth
Positive experience: Great place for all the family. The extra admission fee is a bit cheeky though
Positive experience: Ultra friendly staff, nice facilities. Could do with new perspex around the ice, it's seen better days.
Positive experience: I'm disabled (crutches) but found it easy to enter/exit the swimming pool on my own. The water was lovely & warm which i really appreciated, and i was grateful for being able to use a pool noodle too. We were delayed in getting there which unfortunately (for us) meant school was out, and swim lessons were also taking place. The environment was really busy, and extremely noisy. I managed to do my usual pool excercises, but found it difficult to relax like I normally do, which is part of my wind down. I was constantly getting splashed & bumped. My changing room experience wasn't pleasant. It was really cold after coming out of the warm pool, and I struggled to find a larger type changing room. Kids (girls) were running riot, and I mean screaming, shouting, swearing & banging doors constantly. It all felt quite 'out of control'. No supervision at all. Apparently the gents was just as bad. I also felt there was a lack of chairs/mirrors/hooks in the disabled changing room. Even a mirror on the back of the door? Some more hooks around the place too. It's obvious the place just gets 'hosed' down, so it's difficult to get dressed without getting wet! The changing room I finally got was covered in talc, so again, difficult to get dressed without my clothes being covered in it. Maybe it was just a 'timing' issue, but sadly it was all just an extremely unpleasant experience.
Negative experience: Went last Sunday. Got told there were swimming lessons on.didnt tell me on phone.then said there wud be space to swim but the pool was jam packed with kids.was really disappointed. Came out after 10 mins.also price was high.
Positive experience: Ok! Changing room rather cold.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant facility. Suana, steam room, gym and pool. Cant beat it
Positive experience: My son attends swimming lessons here and the pool is always well staffed and the changing rooms are clean. I would suggest they put more staff on front reception during enrollment weeks and have a dedicated member of staff for this so other patrons can still access the leisure centre quickly.
Negative experience: DO. NOT. GO. HERE. All I was trying to do is purchase access to a gym session, but a worker called "Gavin" kept laughing at me and saying I had "Tremendous skid marks" on the behind of my white gym shorts, while he kept denying me access and making fun of me! It was so bad that I started crying, if you ever have to interact with a worker called Gavin, RUN AWAY IMMEDIATELY! He is a very malicious man, an absolute vile human being. I am absolutely fuming remembering this situation.
Fantastic experience: Great 25m pool with a baby pool and slide. Big and reasonably clean changing rooms (male, female and family). Ice rink is great and skate hire is optional. There's a big gym overlooking the pool and ice rink. Bowling ball and tennis Hall. There's also a nice little cafe
Fantastic experience: Love this place, has a good pool, sauna, steam room and gym. Does swimming lessons too
Positive experience: In serious need of refurbishment getting a bit dated now.
Fantastic experience: I have been using the pool for exercise as I have had knee surgery and it has help a great deal the pool is warm and clean but boy when you get out and go to change its cold lol I would recommend the swimming to everyone it's good for you and low impact if you like me have arthritis
Positive experience: Decent venue for a swim. Good changing facilities.
Positive experience: We visited the galleon and went swimming. The changing rooms were mainly clean, but well used (someone had deposited a blob of chewing gum on one of the cubicle walls), the lockers were also well used but servicable. The pool itself was well split up allowing some lane swimming, a large area for older kids to play in. In addition theres a shallower section of the pool which was not overly busy and ideal for new swimmers / babies and toddlers etc. The water slide was working and popular. It seemed well marshalled with 3 lifeguards present and they managed the levels of carry on, and fun well. Over all I found it a clean but well used amd a little dated however more than useable and the kids just love being in the water! It was a bit more expensive than I thought it would be, approx £11 for 1 adult, an 8yr old and 18month old.
Positive experience: Great place to workout and swim, sauna etc. Sauna and Steam room need some reform and the shower curtains need changing.
Positive experience: Really needs a revamp, looks and feels dated, staff are friendly etc.
Negative experience: staff are npcs and obviously arent programmed to answer the phone
Fantastic experience: It is a good place for adults and kids to have fun together
Fantastic experience: Great swim in clean & safe environment ! A bit busy with early morning swimmers but enjoyable anyway !
Positive experience: We use it for our children's swimming lessons. We have always found the changing rooms to be clean and our kids absolutely love their swimming instructors. I just find it quite annoying that we have to pay an admission charge to get our son in to take part in swimming lessons he's already paid for.
Fantastic experience: My children thrive at their swimming lessons as staff are great with them. Very affordable and their school holiday clubs are fab value for money. Free parking for members makes accessing the centre much easier.
Negative experience: Expensive for what it is, £10 for my son and I to swim for 1 hour, facilities are dated.
Positive experience: Haven’t been to the swimming pool, but the ice rink is really good. The ice skates are good sizes. The rink itself is used mainly for hockey/curling. They won’t let kids under 5 go on the ice without a parent. It’s also pretty expensive. It’s easier to book over the phone, although they NEVER answer.
Positive experience: Good facility.... Ice rink, swimming pool and Gym....
Positive experience: Great pool with lanes to swim properly at certain times. Much quieter during non school holidays. Nice cafe as well. Only problem this week , car park is shut for resurfacing.
Fantastic experience: Bit dated but facilities are good and everything you need under one roof. Reburbishment to take place in due course.
Positive experience: Nice and clean. Well run.
Fantastic experience: From us at the National Autistic Society would like to thank the pool and management staff for their understanding and help, the young man we were supporting today was having a difficult time transitioning to the pool and your help was very much appreciated.
Negative experience: The pool was very cold today and half the showers were freezing
Fantastic experience: Was at indoor bowling so have to be very careful about the restriction of covid
Positive experience: I was there getting My Flu & Booster jags. Both done in in no time at all
Fantastic experience: Always great. I Aquatrim is excellent for my old tired bones
Negative experience: Been trying to speak to somebody for the past 4 hours phoned more than 20 times left voicemails as instructed to see if I could book a time for me and my daughter to go swimming or ice skating and after 4 voicemails where they said would call back haven’t heard anything and still can’t get through
Fantastic experience: I was here for my Booster and Flu Vaccination. It was very well organised
Positive experience: Ok leisure centre go here mainly for Ice Skating. Ice pad isn't the best but better than nothing the centre as a whole could do with being freshened up and modernisation work carried out.
Positive experience: Great pool, pity about some of lifeguards don't like kids having fun
Fantastic experience: Great swim. Super organised. Nice and clean
Fantastic experience: Swim here for fitness as part ofy membership
Fantastic experience: Excellent leisure centre which has definetly stood the test of time! Has all expected facilities including swimming pool!
Positive experience: Kids enjoyed it, i thought it was a bit run down.
Negative experience: Need to upgrade changing facilities still smell really bad of urine.
Fantastic experience: Well organised and friendly staff.x
Positive experience: Bit wore down now, needs some updating but still plenty to do there
Positive experience: Got a jag for the old Covid here - was easy enough - felt hideous the next day - kinda standard. No swimming was on.
Fantastic experience: Got my Covid Vaccine here, In, Chat, Jab, sit for 10-15 mins incase you feel dizzy or faint and off you go. Feel great, we will see how the next few be days fair but I'm excited it's done
Positive experience: Galleon centre needs updated, bonus is indoor pool, ice rink, gym, squash, Great parking. So it's clean, has all your activities and at the end of the day have a sauna, steam room or Jacuzzi, aaahh, lovely.
Negative experience: I have been here several times in the past to use the facilities which are good but expensive and have not found the staff to be particularly helpful, approachable or friendly. On the day I attended I was there for my vaccination, entered the main door and waited for 5 minutes, letter in hand, while both attendants were on the phone. Due to my health this was a big struggle, I use a cane, and it was a kind member of the public that directed me to the door at the side accessed via the car park. I was unaware of the existence of the door but a simple sign on the booth would have directed me to the correct place. I had to sit for 10 minutes when I got to the correct area but the NHS staff were incredible and I can't thank them enough!!!!
