Our comment from FitFit UK about Dunston Hall Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort:

Dunston Hall Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort is a charming destination nestled in the picturesque Norwich, UK. Guests frequently commend the beautiful grounds and the warm hospitality of the staff, creating a welcoming atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.

The spa treatments are often highlighted as a major draw, with many users praising their quality and the relaxing environment. Guests enjoyed the clean and spacious rooms, which, despite some being described as dated, provided a comfortable retreat. The hotel's restaurant offerings received mixed reviews; while some meals were described as good, there were instances of average quality, leading to suggestions for improvement in the dining experience.

Breakfast at Dunston Hall is generally celebrated, featuring a wide array of options that cater to various tastes, though service during busy periods has at times been criticized for being chaotic. Visitors appreciate the leisure facilities, including the gym and pool, though some have noted that the pool temperature could be more comfortable and that family-friendly areas sometimes felt overcrowded.

In summary, Dunston Hall provides a delightful escape with potential for further enhancements to its dining and spa experiences.

Fantastic experience: We had a lovely stay at this hotel, but what was really the "icing on the cake" was the fantastic meal we had, in the restaurant and the fantastic service we received from Grace L, our waitress, she was charming & sweet, and went above & beyond to make us happy on our Wedding Anniversary. We will return

Positive experience: Stayed in January on a one night Spa Break. Spa: Service was excellent from the Spa reception with clear information and directions to the pool facilities (which are not directly connected to the Spa). Both our treatments (full body exfoliation and facial) were excellent . The pool area featured a spa and steam room, along with a jacuzzi. The pool was freezing, not comfortable to chill out in, but fine if you wanted to swim for fitness. It was extremely busy, likely due to being the last day of the Christmas holidays. Quite impressed with the cleanliness as staff were scrubbing surfaces down during the day. Bar restaurant : Food was average and a little overpriced for what it was. £9 for a basic tuna sandwich with a few tortillas is too much. Main restaurant: Service was good, however we were given the wrong starter and when challenged, the staff commented they didn’t have what we wanted (but only told us this when challenged). They did offer this for free. Both main courses were average but not amazing, but they were nearly within the £32 per person allowance. Breakfast: We went to breakfast at 08:30 on Saturday morning and it was extremely busy. Nonetheless we were seated within 5 minutes. Food was again average. Both cooked and continental options available. The pastries were worth a mention as they were particularly good. Unfortunately I discovered a lump of hair in the melon dish. When I reported this to a female staff member she removed the hair but then walked off, leaving the dish for others to use. This was quite disgusting. Room: We had a standard King room which was clean, warm and comfortable enough, however very dated and in need of some modernisation. Overall, the highlight was the spa treatments. The hotel itself was a disappointment considering the high price point and certainly not on the level of other similar properties I’ve stayed at nearby.

Fantastic experience: Room was clean and well appointed, food was ample and delicious. Beautiful hotel and grounds. Only marked down because reception gave everyone in our party different times and information.

Positive experience: Overall a pleasant stay. The reception was well presented and there was a pleasant smell. Our room was lovely, spacious clean and excellent value. Would I stay here again ? Yes

Positive experience: Had a deluxe family room, was very clean and had two king size beds. There was no hair dryer in the room for my wife and the coffee sachets were Nescafé Original, which is unforgivable when you're paying that much for a room! Service was very friendly and the breakfast was excellent. Would definitely stay again.

Negative experience: Very disappointed. Got a call the day before our scheduled spa day to say they would be unable to provide what we have booked in for.

Fantastic experience: Have stayed many times at Dunston and they must be getting it right for us to keep coming back! Rooms are clean and comfortable, dining areas are pleasantly appointed and breakfast is excellent. Always a warm welcome from Will and Laura on Reception who are always happy to do whatever they can to make our stay a wonderful experience.

Fantastic experience: We have had a fabulous stay at Dunston hall Clare the manager was very helpful when I phoned with an an enquiry as were Sally, Laura and William. Everyone was happy and helpful the food lovely and despite such a large hotel it felt an intimate space. Will definitely be returning

Fantastic experience: Hotel is spot on be aware of the thirty two pounds meal allowance as if you go above this you will need to pay extra we weren't aware of this until we went in the restaurant for dinner. We experienced the most embarrassing two days ever they are lacking in communications between reception and restaurant we won't be booking again poor experience.

Negative experience: Great location and lovely looking building and grounds but the five star stops there.. Spa facilities are old. The changing rooms are from the 90s at best, They are run down, rusty and lots of the lockers don't work properly. Jacuzzi is cold, and not at the advertised heat. Pool jets haven't been working for two months. Steam room and sauna are good so fair play... However the biggest issues is screaming children. We have been so many times as members and hearing kids in the pool way beyond into the evening near closing times. You can't charge around £65 a month for adults to come to a spa to listen to screaming children and rubbish parents. And imagine if you have paid £300 for a night £150 for a meal for two and get to a spa and hear screaming all the time. Nothing like putting your clothes in a rusty locker. Professionals come here to wind down not listen to badly behaved children. Also had many under 16s using the spa facilities and staff DO NOTHING. Staff just find this amusing upon complaining and simply don't care but they are also children, very young adults and obviously just started in leisure. They simply just don't care and go back to school. Heard 5 guests complaining just this evening alone so guessing it's not just me that's unhappy. We are not renewing our membership. Cheapest spa facilities are Norwich riverside. Newer changing rooms and more peaceful!

Negative experience: Booked a spa weekend as a gift for my partners parents. Shortly after booking they received a call from the Spa. Asked about past medical history. Both had heart attacks 15 and 16 years previously without any detriment. Had a number of massages at other spas over the years. Told by Spa, rather rudely, that they would need a doctor's note before having any spa treatment. As a doctor this is wholly a complete waste of time for Primary Care, asking customers to make an appointment to request a doctor's letter. Qualified technicians should be trained to assess their clients and advise accordingly, not use a doctor's indemnity vicariously. This place discriminates a good proportion of their customers. Thankfully the booking team were fabulous and we managed a full refund.

Fantastic experience: Lovely place for all sorts of meetings, events, socialising etc. Only came in for a drink but stayed for hours!

Fantastic experience: We were in a large group and were treated like any other guest. The staff were excellent, professional and friendly. No problem was too trivial and treated with urgency. Will definitely return in the future.

Positive experience: This is a lovely hotel. Rooms very clean and spacious. Grounds beautiful. BUT breakfast was absolutely chaotic on all three of the mornings we stayed there. The food was of good quality and the staff hard working and helpful BUT there were either no glasses or no juice, there were no plates and if there was they were cold, there was no bread for toast/ or no butter, it just went on and on !! The gentleman who sat next to us had waited an hour for his porridge ! Very poorly organized - shame it let's the whole place down.

Fantastic experience: Our anniversary night away, would highly recommend staying here and the suites are lovely and roomie. Definitely need to come back and book the 4 poster bed suite. Used the facilities, lovely sized pool and sauna, lovely and relaxing. Breakfast was great, lots to choose from and will be returning.

Fantastic experience: Played here in November. Course has held up pretty well although it had a few temporary tees. Hockey rooms were ok and typical of a resort chain. All in all a pretty good experience

Gina Collette 4 months ago

Positive experience: Service unfortunately was not as good as the previous visit. Food is clearly not cooked fresh to order as by the time we got our meal parts were luke warm to cold. I left the hotel feeling nauseous. Staff were attentive and were quick to rectify the issues we had. We stayed in a lovely, well equipped, and spacious king-size room. One pillow was not enough for a comfortable sleep. Although I could have asked for another, I didn't want to raise another complaint.

Rosemary Boucher 4 months ago

Fantastic experience: We had a lovely relaxing stay. We had a King Room, which was spacious and comfy. The staff were friendly and helpful. There is plenty of choice at breakfast for all diets. We only ate in the bar in the evenings, and had good service in a relaxed atmosphere. We also made use of the gym and spa, which were clean and again staff were helpful and the treatment was relaxing. The hotel is not far from a P&R, 5 minute drive, which we used to go into Norwich. Great place to stay and relax, and use as place to stay to explore this area of Norfolk.

Stuart Field 4 months ago

Negative experience: Very expensive for what you get. Just very average. Impressive building, gym ok but a bit tired. Flashing light in bathroom and fan not working. Charged for water in room and not enough tea/ coffee. Food in restaurant again expensive for what you got. Paid extra for room with a view which turned out to be the car park. Emailed them to question the charge for water and no response after 10 days.

Elizabeth Nakayiza 4 months ago

Negative experience: Staff rude, indifferent to guests that are not in big groups, wouldnt recommend for couples. Best suited for wedding groups and work functions. Swimming pool and changing room in need of clean/removal of mould in areas and dark scummy patches on floor, bring your own flip flops as floor around pool is grim. Note: spa has grey bath robes for special guests I am guessing as normal guests (even those paying for treatments) have to collect bath robes from reception upstairs for themselves.

Negative experience: Rooms Service Location all good. Golf ⛳️ very poor, course not in good condition no course Marshall which allowed a group of 6 to play Food poor for this class of hotel. Wrote to the Manager who sent a comprehensive reply

Wayne Mcmanus 4 months ago

Positive experience: Had 1 night here we found it average. Lovely looking building and grounds. Spa was really just a pool for kids to splash around in. We ad to ask for robes as wernt provided. we upgraded our room but honestly wish we didn't bed was very uncomfortable and noisy room was so hot no a/c or cool air. We had a bar meal which was really nice but breakfast was so disappointing ran out of beans the day before so breakfast was very dry eggs were poor and sour coffee. We travelled 200 mile to this hotel and sadly left disappointed

Kris Trewick 4 months ago

Negative experience: Not the best experience considering how much we paid. Opted for a suite in the old manor house as it was my birthday. The room was nice, however the display on the aircon unit was so bright it was like sleeping with a light on all night and no way to turn it off. No blind on the Velux window so the daylight then woke you up early. Restaurant was also a let down. Arrived around 15 minutes early for an 8.15pm reservation but were told we couldn't be seated as they were too busy and there were no tables ready, yet there were at least 8 empty tables all set up. Once we were seated no one else sat down on those empty tables. Food was also very slow at coming out and a little cold. Spa complex was good with pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna. Afternoon tea was also nice, which we booked on a special offer price of £25 per person. However when we came to checkout the lady on reception charged us the full £30 per person. When I queried this she argued that this offer did not exist but eventually reduced the price to the offer, threatening that they would listen to the phone call when I booked and if the special offer price wasn't mentioned they would charge my card the extra £10. Totally shocking customer service which ruined our stay. Won't be going back there again.

K N 4 months ago

Positive experience: We travel a fair bit so have stayed at different hotels. Went to Dunston for a conference. Arrived after a king drive and all that was on offer was the buffet breakfast at 9am. Wr didn't want a full buffet and didn't have time for it either. The young man handling the resturant could have been a little creative ans suggested or asked a manager for approval. Instead, he said buffet or wait for bar to open. A little customer service would go a long way. It's a bit dated and does need an uplift as there's. masking tape used in some areas.

Peter Fox 4 months ago

Negative experience: This hotel would be punching above its weight if it was a 3*. Whoever owns this hotel needs to give their head a wobble. Even Alex Polizzi would struggle to turn this titanic of a hotel around. For starters, forget staying in the ‘Penthouse’. It’s an absolute shocker of a room. The toilet seat is hanging off, the shower needs sand blasting and there is a good reason why the carpet has been removed which has something to do with a skylight and brown staining on the ceiling. If you are thinking of staying in the room with young kids, forget it, completely unsuitable and don’t get me started in the kitchen. The staff all walk round looking like they are having the worst day imaginable and to be fair, so do most of the guests which is understandable. Top Tip: When booking online and it asks you what time you will be arriving, don’t choose any time before 1500. Your room won’t be ready and they won’t bother telling you before you arrive. Anytime after 1500, it’s still a gamble. Fair play, they did move us to a more suitable room and walking to it felt like an episode of the Crystal Maze. They also weren't going to refund us the difference without asking, cheeky! The £100 difference at least paid my bar bill which made the whole experience just about bearable. Goes without saying, one of the worst hotels in Norfolk in our opinion so definitely will not be risking it again. Would much rather stay in one in Heathersett or quite frankly choose one of the Green or Purple branded ones instead because at least you know what you are getting. This place has so much potential, is such a shame when the building looks as good as it does from the outside.

Positive experience: It was a lovely weekend Seems to be a place that's busy all the time A very beautiful place to stay Comfortable big bed. very quiet hotel noise wise I think the units could be up dated In our room The lift needs a bit of a redec and the light cover has dead insects inside The pool is very nice for a dip Self service breakfast not sure of Bit of a come down to the rest of the place Thought you would have had a safe in your room and house coats And missing a fridge, I think there might have been one in the past in one of the cupboards as it looked like a cupboard for one

Fuad Rahman 5 months ago

Positive experience: It was a good experience overall. Greeted by receptionist and check in process was smooth but the instruction to find my room was complicated! Well the place is like a maze if you are there for first time, I thought a guided journey to room would have been nicer. I had to go up and down the floors and stairs to locate my room. Room was tidy and a small fridge with some complementary drinks was a bonus. Breakfast was nice but again staff forgot to give me correct information initially and I had to go again from the table to ask how breakfast works! As he gave me a menu, I thought someone will come to take order! It was sorted later on and from 2nd day onwards, I knew what to do. Waze map does not take you to the hotel, so, avoid using that. Overall it was a pleasant stay.

Fantastic experience: My stay at Dunston Hall Hotel was simply delightful. The staff were incredibly attentive yet discreet, always there when needed without being intrusive. The culinary experience was outstanding, with a diverse selection of prepared dishes that were both delicious and satisfying. Before departing, I indulged in a cheeky beer – as one does – and was pleasantly surprised by the superb variety offered at very reasonable prices. A truly memorable experience all around!

Fantastic experience: My son and I had a lovely time at Dunston Hall Hotel spa. From the minute we walked through the door. We were greeted by a very helpful receptionist name Caroline who was very kind, to the breakfast staff Beatrice and Nadia who were very helpful and kind. All the staff were polite and great. We were only booked for two tonight , the hotel was lovely that we booked for a third night, that’s shows how we enjoyed it. It was quite and peaceful hotel, historical looking hotel outside and in. Next time my husband will be coming.

Fantastic experience: A huge thanks to the team at Dunston Hall Hotel for hosting our wedding in August. We couldn’t have asked for a better venue or service for our special day. Ella Bruce coordinated the preparations perfectly, responding quickly to our queries and requests, and making sure that everything was taken care of in advance. Rachael Kersey did a great job at looking after our guests when they arrived and the big day itself went seamlessly, not least because of Ella’s meticulous organisation but also because the events team Lottie Howard, Jane Hardingham and Rachel Baldwin had everything in hand. The food and drink were excellent and thank you for making our wedding such a magical experience.

Negative experience: Wouldn’t stay again. Great on the outside but very worn and dated on the inside. Room could do with a major refresh and smelt musty. The pool and changing area felt like a public pool. Hot tub was broken. It looked rather tired and not what I expected. Floors were very dirty and pool was freezing and packed. You also don’t get dressing gowns or slipper unless you are booked on a spa package so we had to get changed to walk back to our room. Restaurant, called to ask if we need to book the day before we arrived and the morning of arrival and we were told there would be no problem getting a table. We confirmed this when we checked in as it was busy. Turned up to dinner and they said they were full and to head to the bar. The bar was also full and were told we could eat outside if we couldn’t find a table….its SEPTEMBER and 13c, and we have a baby with us. Eventually we moved the tables around ourselves to seat 6 and then told half of what we ordered is sold out.

Billy Evans 6 months ago

Negative experience: My girlfriend and I visited the spa for a birthday treat, at a costly price of £240. Upon entrance it seemed great and the spa team were lovely. The facilities however are diabolical, the jacuzzi was out of order which we should’ve been told about before coming, the steam room was filthy with brown mould and wasn’t hot. The sauna was stone cold and couldn’t get warm. The pool is okay. It’s been a shambles and the lunch menu given with the package is terrible. Would steer very clear of this for a spa day, visit elsewhere like centre parcs. Will be asking for a part refund as the massage was lovely. I cannot speak about the rooms of the hotel as I’ve heard they’re lovely, the service was okay. Spa was awful

Negative experience: Visited Dunston Hall last Sunday for a baby shower, on approach it is stunning so I had high expectations of my £30.00 afternoon tea but was left very disappointed!! It was a beautiful afternoon so we met outside in the garden, we had a 2pm booking, we were taken to our tables at 2.10 and ordered our choice of drinks we waited a while for these to be brought out to us then waited a good while longer for the food, this eventually arrived at 2.50 a selection of sorry sandwiches and a few savoury bits, once we had finished these we had to wait until gone 4pm for the scones and sweet cakes came out by which time 4 of our party had to leave!!! Kayleigh our waitress was very nice and she tried her best but clearly the kitchen needs to sort itself out!! We had no explanation or apology for the poor service and in my opinion the food was not worth the £30.00 we paid! I would not return and I would not recommend. If you can't cope with afternoon teas don't take the booking.

Positive experience: Impressive building in lovely location. Service was excellent. All staff very polite and helpful. Golf course nice lots of trees, bushes and layout,BUT negative was the fairways, apparently new drainage system was installed which has left the fairways yellow, hard and hardly any grass. Either side of the fairways lush green grass. Very frustrating.

Positive experience: Stayed for a local wedding and the building is beautiful. Unfortunately as with most older Manor House’s, the interior was old and dated and lacking a lot of quality. Booked a superior king and the bed was two singles pushed together. There was no air con or mini fridge which for the price I paid shocked me. The bathroom was also dated and of kind “Travelodge” level which would have been fine had I not paid the price I did. Service was also not great. We were sat in the “tea cosy” bar area and initially given table service with a tab… it then became unclear when that ended and we had to seek people out to be served and even then they’d forget half our order. Overall the visit was fine, but nothing special and a lot of money for a very basic service which is a shame as there’s a lot of potential in the building.

Fantastic experience: Stayed in the hotel a couple of years ago and had a thoroughly good time. Remember eating both evenings in excellent local pubs, as the Dining Room menu seemed not to be to our taste - my wife has a number of food issues to manage. Would recommend to all. Played at the golf course last week, but coincidence, and was really impressed with the layout and scenery. Not too long as a course, which is no bad thing, and plenty of interest on the way round. A well-stocked Pro Shop, too. Would also thoroughly recommend the golf course to all. Thank you to those concerned.

Fantastic experience: This is my 3rd stay at this hotel this year. As you pull into the grounds of the hotel the gardens and hotel are breath taking. We were greeted by the lovely reception staff (Laura and Clare) who were very helpful. We had a beautiful meal on the Friday night and was served by the lovely Amelia. She served us with a smile and was very friendly. The spa was excellent and the grounds were beautiful. The best bit about this hotel is the breakfast. I would pay extra to have this breakfast. The choice is amazing the the blueberry muffins are to die for. We were served by Kristie who was lovely and a lady called Jane was on hand asking if we needed anything. The service is brilliant. I would highly recommend this hotel and it is worth the drive.

Positive experience: Reception Could be improved, the welcome wasn't very welcoming and both staff members seemed miserable. Not much information given but lukily it was all on the leaflet. LOVE the wooden key card and lots of parking available. Room VERY DATED. Probably the worst thing about this hotel. Bathroom was okay and looked refurbished but the lack of soundproofing is atrocious. Woken up a few times from drunken wedding party guests and then again early in the morning with screaming kids going to the pool. Very hot and no AC. Gym One of the best gyms we've ever been to! Every machine you could possibly think of and each type of machine in it's own section which was very nice. TV in each area too. Swimming Pool/Sauna/Steam Lovely big swimming pool although the first day we used it, it was full of screaming kids doing backflips despite this being banned and the pool only being 1.2m deep. And another 7ish year old in the hot tub which is also not allowed but no staff would inform them... It was definitely not relaxing but the facilities themselves are really good. Huge sauna can fit almost 10 people maybe more and quite hot at 85c. Very nice steam room as well. There were lots of inconsiderate people in the hot tub as we waited around 30 minutes to be able to get a space in. The second day at the pool was a little better but not much. Restaurant Dinner was incredible although we waited very long for our food. Drinks were nice and expensive. Breakfast was pretty good although our allocated table was stolen and no waiter came to offer pots of tea or coffee which we were told would happen. Overall Overall stay was good but lots of room for improvement. Beautiful grounds and beautiful building. I would return but definitely not during a wedding party if that's even possible and definitely more guest control needed to make the stay more pleasant for those who care about peace and tranquility.

Positive experience: Our room was superb with plenty of space. Very clean and comfortable bed. The staff were very polite and helpful. Unfortunately on our first night we had a meal in their restaurant and had to wait nearly an hour to receive it and that was after we spoke to a waitress asking where it was. The risotto was rather bland and tasted like it had been standing around a bit and the texture wasn't soft. Breakfast was fine, nothing earth shattering.

Negative experience: The worst laid out hotel I've ever stayed at, the place is like a maze. Everyone was getting lost constantly. For the price I would also expect air conditioning, the rooms were boiling. The furniture in the rooms also needed an overhaul, with veneer peeling away etc. Bathroom sink was blocked easily just by running water. Ablutions were not filled up. Thoroughly disappointing.

Negative experience: A gorgeous listed building that has an amazing drive leading up to the very impressive Manor House. Staff very friendly and well presented, we didn’t use the golf course as this was a mini break. The room was very clean, Tom was brilliant and thorough. We booked into the restaurant but left before dinner, the restaurant was very noisy and almost like a school canteen, piano too loud definitely not for a romantic dinner. We had breakfast each morning & the food was at best good, we paid extra for scrambled eggs but it was just horrible reconstituted and couldn’t be eaten. We were in the conservatory which was not clean, window ledges had dead flies and crumbs with slug trails on the carpet, we had hoped so much but left never to return. A good housekeeping team is required with a manager who actually checks. On checkout we were asked how we liked our stay, we were truthful! Reception staff apologised and said they would pass on to management. This building deserves some love and I’m sure with some care could be once again grand and glorious.

Fantastic experience: I have a hip disability, me and my partner booked a room which was disabled friendly, had ramp access and elevators to floors, bathrooms were well fitted for disability aswell. The rooms were exceptionally well kept. The pool and gym looked amazing, however my condition i didnt use. However i did try the food, had the tastiest Caesar salad with sea bass. Next day trying the fish and chips..both meals were exceptional. The menu has a good selection to it. May not be vast, but superior quality. I most enjoyed the gardens to which had a victoria sponge slice and lime and lemonade outside in just stunningly kept surroundings, the tranquility and serenity on such a beautiful day was healing for me. There is 2 restaurants here, of which one is a bar/restaurant i had my meal there. The decor and sumptuous furniture and decoration, felt wonderfully enriching. The staff were polite, friendly, lovely to chat with. The only downside i found was that room service for food was discontinued for some reason, which is really a minor point to be fair. I also did not try the golf out as obviously my hip condition is such limited me. I however found the opulence of this experience, one that i will treasure. This is a wonderful hotel to stay in and is a perfect place for a couple to have a relaxing experience away from the hustle and rush of life. A place that captivates awe and inspiration. Relaxation and recharge in a most pleasant way.

Positive experience: Beautiful hotel, was greeted by a lovely receptionist upon arrival. Stayed in a deluxe family room which was nice. Downside for the room - air conditioner controller only allowed heated air mode and no cooling mode (even though it indicates it has the frost logo mode). Did feel there was a lack of plugs, only two above a desk. Room service - only offered for breakfast, sadly i was working nearby at Snetterton and left before breakfast starting at 7am, with working locally until 7pm, it would have been nice to have the option of room service for food at in the evening.

Fantastic experience: Only called in for refreshments after driving around all day in a rented Triumph Stag for my Dads birthday. A warm welcome and very friendly staff. Sumptuous surroundings to be further explored on another visit.

Positive experience: Long way to rooms, confusing corridors and signage. Excellent leisure facilities, pool, steam room sauna, beautiful grounds. Lilac room excellent. Good breakfast but evening meal average.

Positive experience: We went to a wedding fair, the building is dark but incredible but the fair was a labyrinth through many rooms, it lacked coherence and there had to be guides to direct you, I think that sums it up! The garden terrace was lovely for coffee however.

Fantastic experience: A lovely short break. Food Spar and service was excellent. Room could be improved with better coffee making facilities and TV was very small and sound was poor quality. Otherwise everything else was lovely, clean and bed was comfortable

Negative experience: Hey Dunston hall, I just want to give you some feedback on our Saturday night stay at your establishment, I would like to think we are a very liberal couple who look at life from all angles and more often than not give people and everyday situations the benefit of the doubt....but.....there are a few things that we just needed to share with you guys so you can hopefully make the next paying customers stay (especially in room 278) a lot more pleasant......firstly we wanted to celebrate a special occasion and open a bottle of bubbly and to our surprise there were no glasses in our room....not even the teeth cleaning tumbler glasses you find, that are even present in a budget ibis bathroom. However we were delighted to be given some at the bar after I trecked all the way back past reception to get them. Secondly we decided to switch the TV on.....remote did not work....so after using the manual buttons located on the TV to switch it on I decided to see if the remote actually had batteries in it....and to our horror the batteries had blown and were leaking white battery acid which is irritable to skin and very dangerous, of course I got this on my hands and washed my hands thoroughly immediately to avoid any serious harm. Thirdly the bed on the side of the door had what can only be described as a divet like pot hole making it very uncomfortable, I decided to sleep on that side and found myself waking several times throughout the night with a sore back and we both ended up curled on the unaffected side of the bed with a 'no mans land' type of space on the broken bed! The lamp shade on that side has looked like a cat had used it as a play thing. The room on the whole was very tired looking with hairs found in the bathroom also. We were also surprised there were no gowns or slippers provided. There is also a generator that woke me on a couple of occasions outside. Moving on from the room we decided to get some food, we arrived at the bar and ordered some drinks, asked about the restaurant and where we can eat, we felt asif we were served in a very abrupt manner and that the barmaid had more important things to be doing than serving paying guests. We both assumed it was because it was a Saturday night and it could be a busy period. We took a seat in the bar and lounge and decided to order our food from the menu, we ordered our food around 18:45pm other couples arrived after us and we're getting their food before us, over an hour passed and my partner went to the bar and asked is table 17's food going to be much longer please? After she did this our food turned up within 5 minutes it was 19:58 (I know this exact time because I took a photo of it on my phone) it is dining etiquette of an establishment to let the customer know if fhe wait on food is over 40 minutes but this was not stated when ordering. When the food arrived the only thing that was actually hot was the side of thick cut chips, my partner's chicken was cold and dry/chewy, and my chicken burger was dry and the coleslaw looked as though it had been left out of the chiller a long time as it was turning yellow, also my fries were cold. We were so hungry we decided to start eating it. The loaded nachos were also disappointing and once again were cold, all of the food looked as though it had been ready for a long time before somebody finally decided to deliver it to our table after we asked! So perhaps someone lost the ticket or your staff were just rushed off their feet (although there were plenty in the area we were dining) we felt the food was very expensive for what it was and we expected a lot better quality than what was delivered. Also a male member of your waiting staff had very bad body odour, I can appreciate it is very hot in the environment they work in but this was very off-putting when trying to enjoy a meal. All in all we were both really disappointed with our dunston hall stay and did no way reflect the price of the room you had charged. I do not usually do reviews but I felt like I had to share this with you. Apologies and thank you.

Fantastic experience: What a little gem we found in this beautiful hotel. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome, the room was clean and spacious with an amazingly comfortable bed. The food in the Terrace was fantastic and the atmosphere and decor was relaxing, staff again were exceptional. We brought our pooch along and she was made to feel like a queen, all the staff gave her attention. Breakfast was plentiful and our doggo was allowed to dine with us (in of course a specific area). The grounds are beautiful and we also tried the driving range which had excellent facilities, the Trackman was great! We take our pooch to many hotels both in the UK and abroad and this has to be one of the best dog friendly ones. We definitely will be back!

Fantastic experience: Nice hotel, friendly staff, plenty of parking and rooms are nice if not a little dated. The building itself is amazing to look at and there is a bar, restaurant, gym, spa, golf and driving range on site so plenty to do. If you're looking for an out of the way quiet place this is a good choice, there is also a Tesco/fuel 5 minutes away if you need anything.

Negative experience: Visited for my mother’s birthday, staff had no idea of booking which was made couple weeks before. Marks on table cloth. Staff said they needed to set up which should have been done ‘the night before’. The food was very basic and minimal, one mini egg sandwich each per person for £30!!!!!! So expensive for not even the bare minimum. Cakes were worse than processed store bought! Would avoid at all costs!!

Fantastic experience: Great breakfast, fresh, great range and amazing service. Lovely building, character, history and setting. If your looking for a nice evening meal the brasserie is a great place and functions are great too.

Negative experience: This should have been a great hotel. The architecture and spaces have been transformed well into a hotel. The food (breakfast) from the restaurant and evening food from the bar let this place down. Cold or overcooked. Not replenished swiftly enough for the guest numbers. Breakfast service was a shambles. The woman seating people was so process driven, she's forgotten customer service. Shameful and insincere behaviour by her, not only to us but observed with many others right through breakfast time. Rooms are great; clean and comfortable. The spa is very, very tired. Sauna and steam rooms not hot as should be. Jacuzzi and pool opposingly are both very cold. The hotel allows dogs. No issue with this. Kids on the other hand were an issue. It was overrun with families. So if you're after a romantic break avoid this hotel. Golf driving range very good, as is the golf course.

Positive experience: The hotel is beautiful although it has vintage style theme in some parts of the building and also wouldn't class this as a luxury. The rooms are a bit tired looking and needs a huge refurb especially the bathrooms. Furniture could be changed to a more modern look. After a couple of other 4 star hotels we stayed at we expected a few things to be regularly available like a fridge in the room, slippers provided with the bathrobes we had. In the corridors we expected refreshments to be stored like sugar, tea, coffee, milk etc. Apart from the negatives there is a lot of positives too. Breakfast is amazing with a buffet style so don't miss it. Service is exceptional with friendly staff and anything you ask for they serve it quickly. The beds are very cosy too. The leisure facilities is a must to experience. A walk around the hotel is beautiful due to it's remote location and nature around.

Fantastic experience: Beautiful surroundings and an opulent décor. TV in the room could have let me access my streaming services for evening entertainment. Breakfast in the restaurant was also top notch.

Fantastic experience: Brilliant service, lovely spa, excellent treatments, tasty dinner, super breakfast, lovely lounge area. Reasonably priced and very warm and welcoming stay. For the price I don't think you could beat it for a spa with overnight stay. I will be coming back and recommending to friends and family.

Positive experience: Very clean, beautiful place. Dunston hall is full of character and history. The staff were very polite and friendly. The pool area was quite small with not much space for many sun loungers which also aren’t aloud to be reserved, but if your a staying guest and get in past 8, it is very quiet especially on a week day. The rooms are a good size with en suite, although maybe the TVs could do with an upgrade. Our iron leaked abit also; but I’m sure if we’d asked for a new one that wouldn’t have been a problem. The bedroom ceiling fan was broken so only had the one speed setting, this maybe an issue in the summer for some. But also maybe this was just our room and we drew the short straw. Overall I would come here again for the evening.

Fantastic experience: I've just had the most amazing weekend at this hotel. A mystery weekend tour with A&P coaches. And it's a stunning place to stay. The hotel staff are all very professional and friendly, My room was very nice indeed, I took full advantage of the swimming pool and spa facilities too. The food was yummy . I highly recommend to go here for a weekend of a week or anything. Very impressed. Il be going back again.

Negative experience: If you are expecting the inside to match the outside please dont. I brought my children here for a country escape. We booked a suite, our expectations were so much higher, it was basically two interconnecting rooms with travel lodge style decor. No luxury here whatsoever. When we first arrived the lady behind the desk curtly said she had no booking for us. After repeating our booking over and over she eventually found us. It was an embarrassing start. We had arrived at 1.30pm, this was before the 3pm check in, however they said they would radio up and the room would be ready for 2pm. We went back at 2pm where we waited behind a lady who had a wowcher deal. They were very nice with her, even commenting on her nails. They said her room would be ready. I, a full paying customer moved forward, and was curtly told check in was not until 3pm. Another full paying customer behind us was rudely greeted too, when they were told they should have booked dinner online and there were now no reservations until 9pm that evening. More wowcher deals came in and were treated really well. When in our room there were no elemis products as advertised and our towels were dirty. Theres no room service and even if you want oat milk instead of cows milk, they will not bring it to your room. There was one nice man who let us sit in the bar and made us a drink while we waited for our room, and one nice lady who got us some coffee pods for our room. However, this is absolutely not a luxury hotel, this is a travel lodge style in a beautiful setting, they have removed many of the of the original buildings features inside. I would highly recommend NOT paying full price, they like cheap here, so get on wowcher and get yourself a 'deal'. This is the clientele they are after, if you pay full price they really dont want you here. If you want travel lodge style in a beautiful setting this is your hotel, but please, please, dont go with high expectations, and definitely DON'T pay full price, you will be sorely disappointed.

Fantastic experience: We had our wedding here in December and from the first time we visited, we knew it was the venue for us. Anita helped us through the entire planning of our big day. She was so helpful and nothing was ever too much trouble. The communication was quick and professional, putting us at ease. Trevor and his team on the day were efficient, friendly and worked very hard to ensure that our day went smoothly. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious, especially the sticky toffee pudding. Thanks to Chef and the kitchen team. We are so grateful for every department that helped to ensure that the entire weekend was perfect. Check in was quick, breakfast was lovely and the rooms were spotlessly clean. The Penthouse suite was the perfect setting for the bridal party to get ready in the morning, so spacious and well lit, with added character from the exposed beams. The photos from the grounds look incredible. Thank you Dunston Hall for everything, our wedding day was perfect! Mark & Char x

Positive experience: Oh dear, what a shame - initially it was difficult to book a table in advance as apparently the restaurant was "full". We eventually got a table on Friday night at 8.00 pm - we waited 50 minutes (and two reminders) for a bowl of olives, some pickled onions and focaccia bread - 50 minutes!! We then waited another 30 minutes for our main courses, 2 rib eye steaks, a beef and ale pie and a veggie burger. The steaks were cold, the chips were cold, the veggie burger was dried up, like a piece of cardboard - it was also cold, as were its accompanying chips. The only hot meal was the beef and ale pie, presumably straight from the microwave! There appeared to be an abundance of teenage wating staff, doing precious little, a youth from the kitchen wandering aimlessly around the restaurant and a maître d' run off her feet dealing with complaints. On top of which the "full" restaurant was in fact only half full. The only good thing was that our bill was waived (aside from the wine) - shame as this spoilt an otherwise good weekend - oh and don't bother with the "house special" cocktails....mocktails would be a better word - pre-mixed out of a bottle, appalling and undrinkable!!

Positive experience: Location here was great and the communal bar areas are lovely and well presented. The rooms are a little basic and slightly dated but big and comfortable and well maintained. The spa and pool area is in much need of some maintenance and would benefit from having child free time slots.

Cath Craven 1 year ago

Negative experience: This was not what we expected. Firstly our room was next to double doors in the corridor and everytime somebody went through them we would here the thud of those door. Our evening meal was very disappointing. Poor quality and execution. Would definitely not recommend the restaurant. Once back on our room and trying to settle we had dogs barking.from the room opposite in their room. After over an hour...this was at 10 pm I complained to reception. They did manage to track the owners down and peace was restored. Reception offered an apology. On our last day the water went off and it was only when I reported this to reception was I offered an alternative room to shower. Pity I had to chase that information. By then iyt was too late and we had a 6 hr drive home without thout being able to freshen up.before we set off. Communication and customer care is not a concern for this hotel. Much as these incidents were unfortunate they could have been handled with more thought and care to ensure the customers have a pleasant experience.

Negative experience: 28.12.2024 Dirty, cold room with radiator not working. For some reason housekeeping keep opening the window when I'm out which makes no sense esp with the radiator not working. Have reported to reception but it took 3 days for them to fix it. Breakfast was OK, not as fresh as could be. Daughter and granddaughter joined, £15 and £7.50. Staff were pleasant and efficient but tables felt grubby and coffee wasn't very nice. Room was at the back overlooking the fields. Nice and quiet, only bonus.

Positive experience: Dunston Hall Hotel is an interesting place that’s for sure. It’s an affordable price especially with breakfast included and the breakfast was very good. The gym and pool etc were great and much bigger than most hotels. They were understaffed on our first night so the bar and food service staff were under the pump for quite some time but they managed OK. The rooms are a bit spartan but you get what you pay for right? Would I go back - yes but only when the price is right.

Fantastic experience: From reception to housekeeping it was a great stay. The food and service in the restaurant in the evening was fantastic. The waiter and waitress Ben and Emma were very friendly and made us very comfortable. A first class service from them both.

Fantastic experience: Really nice hotel with friendly staff , kids and pet friendly. Rooms has a comfortable beds and pillows. Breakfast was very fresh with a good option of healthy food but that was busy when I been there as that was during Christmas break. Spa is good but a swimming pool temperature a little bit cold but extra clean and helpful staff Changing room has a lots of safe lockers and good shower and shampoo and hair dryer Overall we had a lovely time at this hotel, highly recommended and we will be back again soon .

Fantastic experience: We staying for 2 nights. Our room wasn’t ready when we got here but it’s not big deal. Very nice hotel for short breaks nice and clean room staff were very polite. Rachel in reception was very welcoming and helpful. Pool and spa area clean. Breakfast ares was a bit busy but very organised. Will stay again definitely.

Fantastic experience: Such a beautiful hotel. The rooms were spacious and the restaurant facilities were sublime. Service from the front desk was exceptional and helpful. It would be lovely to see more of the hotel itself. It's only 15 minutes into the city centre and so you don't feel you are missing out. The only down side was that our room was located on the first floor but in order to get to it, it was a bit of a maze. Having facilities for people to use other entrances to their 'house' would be useful.

Ryan Arthurton (Ryanart) 1 year ago

Negative experience: Christmas lunch set menu was an absolute shamble. It took 3 hours for 3 courses courses to be served. The food was cold. One of the selling points of the beef main was a yorkshite pudding. The dish came without one, and when this was pointed out to staff I recieved a cold aunt bessies yorkshire pudding, this was an £80 meal, what an absolute joke. In a room full of over 100 guests there wasn't anyone running the bar, and when asked if we could order drinks we couldn't because food was being served. The manager was rude and sulky when confronted with the facts of the poor service and when we could finally orded drinks the under manager was sulking at the bar. The meal was an absolute joke, we all left hungry and disappointed. The business was happy to take our money, and serve us cold food with portions the size of childrens meals.
