truGym Thorpe Bay

Negative experience: A great gym. But I always log my reg when I park in their car park. Got a parking fine through Smart Parking which I appealed. Heard nothing until I got a mail 6 months later demanding £170 without any recourse. Love the gym but do NOT park in their carpark. I will be parking in the residential streets across the main road. If the residents complain then tough. I can't be paying £170 a visit in parking charges. No one to speak to at Smart Parking everything online and no one comes back. Gym Staff have no authority.

Fantastic experience: Friendly staff and good facilities - lots of variety of classes

Negative experience: Okay-ish gym equipment, some quite ropey as I remember this equipment was here over 20 years ago when it was under another name, as is a lot of the fixtures ie broken lockers, taps in toilets, even after a so called refurbishing. There are a few catty women staff on reception, every week toilets have run out of toilet roll ( 2 without today ) when I go to reception to tell them I get the same answer ‘we’re just going to do it now ‘ then you get the under breath mumbling & dirty looks, charming !

Negative experience: Absolute worst place in the whole damn world. Instead of making a 59 year old man with a heart surgery scar to get in a swimming pool for his children, they should hire a lifeguard. 0 thought or consideration taken into this. I have never ever been so absolutely disappointed and annoyed at this awful place. Last thing this man wants is to go to swim when he hasn't properly learnt because he grew up in a small village in South Asia in mud houses. All he wants is to go to the gym and allow his children to have fun swimming whilst he tries to get into shape but this is what we deal with. Absolutely disappointed. Utterly ridiculous.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym, lots of space but well organised into areas. Lots of equipment, all clean and in good condition, I didn’t see one machine out of order. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. Highly recommended!

Fantastic experience: I spent a fabulous spa day at this gym recently, and was so impressed with not only the facilities but the amazing staff! They went above and beyond to make our day fabulous.The manager contacted me personally when I had a few problems with the online booking, she then tailored our spa day to accommodate my daughters special needs.This type of excellent "inclusion" was outstanding.Every part of our day was outstanding, from the facilities, staff (especially George who looked after us with VIP treatment) the amazing food and welcoming members. I will definitely be returning

Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member of several gyms over the years, but this one truly stands out. The facilities are always clean, the equipment is top-notch, and all the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. A real asset to the club is Jay. She's a fantastic instructor. Her energy is infectious, and she knows exactly how to push you to your limits while keeping spin fun, and engaging. Whether you're a beginner or more seasoned on the bike, she makes sure everyone feels welcome and gets the most out of their workout. The playlists she curates are incredible – you’ll leave class feeling motivated, empowered, and ready to take on the day. Keep it up Trugym team!

Negative experience: After cancelling via phone and email I was sent a email stating that my subscription had ended. The company continued to charge me monthly under a different name to truGym. Now I have tried to reclaim my membership fees they are saying this can only be done by head office and head office does not contact me. I have been forced to pay money myself to take legal action against the company. I have never used the facilities once but they owe me almost £1000

Negative experience: Treat customers unfairly , and when you speak up they are ignorant £57 membership and they make you pay to hire racquets , spend your money elsewhere

Positive experience: Some of the team are absolutely brilliant. Some not so much. It would be nice to have scales to watch your progress when you're going to get healthier. The sauna and steam room although small are always working and definitely are nice to use.

Negative experience: Been a member for a year. Been going solid since new year mostly when I finished work being morning/afternoon straight from work in work clothes.i done this 100s of times.also seen plenty of other trades working out in work gear.never had a problem. until today when I was refused entry.granted i was wearing sliders which I've done plenty of times before with no issues.im lifting weights not running a marathon Il take my 57 a month to another gym.no big deal

Fantastic experience: I have been coming to this gym now for nearly a year and I must say it is one of the cleanest gyms I’ve been to - they keep it spotless the staff are friendly. It is managed perfectly. It’s a really good atmosphere here and staff work very hard to keep it a great place to come to. So well done to management and all of the team

Fantastic experience: I used to be a member of LA/DW fitness for many years and switched to David Lloyd when it closed. Now it has reopened as TRU Gym i have rejoined, best decision i made. I love it ! The staff are friendly, the increased class timetable is varied and in my opinion caters for all. The pool has been recently updated and it is definitely for the better. I love nipping down for an evening swim and sauna in peace! I recommend Helens Tue morning box-fit class aswell as her bootcamp. Always a fun but hard workout! Spin box with roisin is another favourite. I love the selection of early morning classes. The place is kept clean and tidy. Plenty of parking spaces. The parking is never an issue, plenty of reminders in car park about registering your car details on arrival. The staff often continue to remind you on arrival too. I would most definitely recommend TRU Gym to anybody considering joining. X

Negative experience: Parking fine through the post and debt recovery letter with absolutely zero empathy after the gym telling me to consider the matter closed! The new cctv I believe had not long been set up with no one telling me about it before, during or after a gym tour! Absolutely fuming!

Negative experience: New parking system? Two fines in the post. Poor customer service that no one mentioned it when I entered the gym. Looks like I'll be looking for a new gym. Terrible. Zero communication. Happy to take money but not tell us about parking.

Fantastic experience: My first time ever that I have joined a gym. I joined up at the end of June and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I don’t go everyday, but at least two/three times a week for a couple of hours, sometimes I go just for swimming. I have noticed the difference in my waistline in a positive way since joining up! The staff are friendly and the manager (Roisin) is also very pleasant and always gives you some encouragement in her classes. Make sure you book Aqua Aerobics and Spin classes as soon as they come out, as those classes soon fill up at the drop of a hat. But you can put yourself on a waiting list if you’re not so lucky. The pool with sauna, steam room and jacuzzi are a nice touch and a welcome sight to cool off and chill, after having a full on workout upstairs or in the classes. Top tip: Make sure you bring your own padlock for the lockers in the changing rooms.

Positive experience: This gym has great potential but has room for improvement. The good bits. Pool , squash, tennis, sauna, steam , classes and lots of gym equipment. The not so good. Could be cleaner in all areas. Slightly rough around the edges when you start looking. Music in cafe is same as the gym which is awful and loud. Back to the other bits now; staff are friendly and helpful. Small cafe section is nice. Some chill out zones. Ample parking (don't forget to register your car when there or you will get a fine) Access for everyone is easy and there is a lift. Facilities do need to become cleaner. It is ok but essentially the swimming pool and changing areas and the gym could be improved. Overall I would recommend visiting.

Fantastic experience: This is a seriously well-run gym. Everything works, and works well. The staff keep a beady eye on everything and its clean, the equipment works, the spa area is sparkling. Thanks guys. :)

Negative experience: Dated cardio equipment. Many maintenance issues that don't get fixed especially in the cardio area. Requests to fix are meet with a smug sounding 'it all works fine' response. Run down looking in areas, especially the changing rooms, often dirty lockers and a musty smell even when no customers there. Can have a soleless atmosphere at times and annoying music selection. Had an intro offer paying whole year an equated to £34 a month, but felt not really worth it. Shame but most disappointing gym membership experience of the last 30years. Simply gym, Puregym, Welcome Gym and The Gym Group all offer better value for money. Good Yoga classes though.

Positive experience: "truGym Thorpe Bay : A Great Space for Achieving Fitness Goals" Since joining truGym Thorpe Bay in January 2023, it's been an integral part of my fitness journey. My personal trainer, Jordan James, first introduced me to this gym, and since then, I've been training here. What strikes me about truGym Thorpe Bay is its cleanliness. Staff members are committed to keeping the space spick-and-span all the time. It's so clean, in fact, that I joke you could train in white socks and they would stay pristine! truGym Thorpe Bay offers ample parking space, so finding a spot for your vehicle is never an issue. Cyclists are not left out either - there's a secure rack where you can park your bike. I've always found the staff welcoming and friendly. They greet you with a smile as you enter and are always on hand to assist if you're unsure about how to use any equipment. Stay hydrated during your workout with the convenient water fountain upstairs. Feeling peckish? There's a café downstairs with a variety of snacks and drinks. The gym has an impressive range of equipment that keeps growing. I appreciate this, but I hope they continue to consider the comfort of members and avoid overcrowding. The array of equipment and daily training programs can appear intimidating initially, but the supportive staffs make it feel less daunting. The swimming pool, sauna, and steam room are well-kept and of comfortable size. The changing rooms and toilets are also impressively clean, but remember to carry a lock and key - though the staffs are ready to offer a spare if needed. truGym Thorpe Bay stands out for its sensory lighting and special rooms designed for neurodiverse individuals. This thoughtful touch has made a big difference to me, as it allows for a more inclusive and comfortable workout environment. On my ongoing fitness journey, truGym Thorpe Bay has been a reliable support. If you commit to training and maintain a healthy diet, this gym fosters an environment conducive to reaching your fitness goals. There are a few areas, though, where truGym Thorpe Bay could step up. Currently, they lack outdoor activities except for an open tennis court, which isn't always usable due to weather. Adding more outdoor workout options would enhance the overall experience for those of us who enjoy outdoor activities. I look forward to the chance to meet the manager one day and express my appreciation for their hard work. The gym maintains a high standard that attests to the significant effort put into its operation. A gym can serve different purposes for different people. For me, truGym Thorpe Bay is a sanctuary that nurtures my mind, body, and soul. It plays an important role in my mental health and overall well-being. In summary, I rate truGym Thorpe Bay 4.5 out of 5, since Google would not allow me to enter the 0.5, I gave it a rating of 4 out of 5. If you want a clean, friendly gym with diverse equipment, great staff, and sufficient parking, truGym Thorpe Bay is a solid choice. I do wish they had more outdoor facilities, but the indoor amenities are still quite impressive.

Fantastic experience: Spoke to the manager about a day pass and she was welcoming and helpful. Gym was lovely and quiet, equipment was good and clean and then had a swim in the pool which was also good. Will be coming back.

Fantastic experience: A fantastic friendly gym with a great variety of equipment and classes. Every single member of staff are super friendly, welcoming and always willing to help. The manager cares so much about the club and the members and it shows by the way she always looks for ways to support members and improve the club. A warm welcome every time you walk through the door for the personal touch. Who could ask for more!

Fantastic experience: Trugym is a reasonably priced gym good value for the money you get plenty of classes yoga pump spin hot yoga is also available at no extra cost .. the gym floor has plenty of squat racks and chest Presses loads of weights who cares if there chipped a 20kg weights a 20 weight !! It there to lift not to look at . The new spin bikes are ace and I like the new cable cross machine and pull-up stepper .. the pool is popular with the water aerobics classes . Always a full class .. medium sized sauna , spend about half hour without a break that takes some doing as it’s always hot .. I’m an original member of la fitness going back over 20 years . and the fully towels and costume dryer disappeared at least 10years ago , and relatively speaking I’m paying less per month 20 years down the road energy prices considered … I always find the manageress very polite cheerful and takes a great spin box class on a Sunday The other teachers I go back with 15 years when it was LA , and I’m glad they’ve showed their Loyalty because they take a good class always full get in quick or your on the waiting list . I find the other gym staff always polite and helpful at all times ..

Positive experience: Good range of facilities for the price.

Negative experience: Lovely gym shame about the staff (manager) she is extremely rude and truly horrible person. I used lockers that was in a communal area. She cut if my lock even though there was no signs anywhere and had clear lock hook. When asking her what had happened she was extremely rude saying I can't use the pad locks there that's why she cut the lock refusing to apologise and made me feel extremely uncomfortable like she wanted confrontoation

Positive experience: If they didn’t have a sauna / steam, I wouldn’t come here. The place just feels dirty and as if they take bare minimum interest in keeping it clean and a good experience for guests. No hairdryers work in the men’s changing rooms, there is no water fountain, no shower gel or towels. Plus the gym equipment upstairs is old, rusty and no staff take any care to clean up the plates or reorganise stuff (like they do at PureGym). I also saw a PT go for a dump in the men’s (tall guy with face covered in tattoos) and he walked straight out the toilet without washing his hands and back into the gym floor, which was disgusting. Sums the place up to be honest and the culture. Staff at reception have always been helpful and friendly to be fair.

Negative experience: Absolutely filthy swimming pool with slime all above the water level no hairdryers working no shelves in showers no costume dry shakers gone downhill so badly unbelievable love my money back filthy place and a female manager doesn’t give a toss

Positive experience: A great gym with all the equipment and classes you need to stay fit. Having the jacuzzi not working for two weeks or more is not acceptable. That said the staff are really helpful and polite. The little coffee shop is awesome too. They serve some great food and the coffee is lovely too.

Fantastic experience: People moaning about the "old" equipment prioritise the wrong things. All the equipment works flawlessly - there's the odd scuff mark on the machines etc but the only people who care about that are the ones who come to the gym to take insta selfies. There's tonnes of stuff, it's reasonably priced, it's never busy.
