Negative experience: I am writing to express my disappointment with the recent changes to the gym layout at Ocean Terminal. I have been a loyal member for over two years and have generally been satisfied with the facilities, especially when the gym was upstairs. The previous layout offered ample space, and I particularly appreciated the room with mirrors and large mats for stretching, practicing movements, and other activities requiring more space. However, the new setup leaves much to be desired. The machines are now positioned too close to each other, making it feel as though the space is primarily designed for personal trainers to conduct classes, rather than for members who want to engage in a variety of workouts. It seems there is little consideration for those of us who do not simply want to focus on weightlifting but need room for stretching, mobility exercises, or other activities that require more space. The designated areas for stretching are very limited, and the studio space, while a potential improvement, is often unavailable due to ongoing classes throughout the day. This creates significant inconvenience for members who wish to use the space for individual workouts. Today, I arrived at the studio to begin my workout as the mirrored area in the main gym was already occupied. However, a trainer informed us that we needed to leave the studio as a class was about to begin. While I understand that classes need space, there were only three participants in the class, yet the trainer occupied the entire studio, forcing the rest of us to squeeze into a much smaller, less suitable area at the back of the gym. I believe that as paying members, we should be able to use the gym facilities in a fair and efficient manner. I would appreciate it if you could consider a more balanced approach to space allocation that ensures everyone can use the gym comfortably without disruption. I’m sure there is a more effective solution that would accommodate both individual workout needs and scheduled classes. I look forward to your response and hope this issue can be addressed promptly. So update: I am not happy with seeing that all complaints have just automatic responses without members of the team thinking about the complaint and asking me for suggestions which I clearly described in the review.

Fantastic experience: Excellent gym. I travel internationally often and it's hard to find a good gym with the following 2 features that PureGym does have: -A 30-day no-contract membership with the price clearly displayed on the website!! (bonus points for being able to sign myself up online and getting a simple QR code to access the gym) -Power racks, free weights, machines, cables, and cardio equipment! I LOVE that there are plenty of bars, racks, and deadlifts platforms to accommodate like 15 (?) people at the same time. Other nice features are the app that shows how many people are currently there. It has only been busy like 1-2 times in the past 2 weeks and otherwise has been pretty chill. I like the variety of cardio equipment and the 4 stair climber machines. The entire place is pretty big. The locker rooms and bathrooms are nice and clean. I think the only complaint at all that I can think of is that there's not a cleaning station with paper towels and cleaning solution near the cardio equipment, so you have to walk all the way to one side or another side of the gym. I asked one employee on my first day where those were located and he was very kind describing where they were, so I appreciate the customer service. Price isn't too bad for 30 days either. Oh, I guess one other small complaint would be that there aren't nice cycling bikes elsewhere in the gym. Those nice ones are only in the room for cycling classes, so the remaining bikes in the gym are the Concept 2 bikes with no gears or the ones with the big seats for old folks. It's a small thing but just something I noticed.

Positive experience: I came in to look at the facilities when Pure Gym opened at its new location. Whilst there seems to be plenty of machines available to use, the reason I did not become a member is because for me personally the music was excessively loud on the gym floor and the fitness class doorless "room" despite many gym users visibly wearing ear phones. I spoke to the staff member who was showing me around, about the music volume, and was advised this is the vibe in big gyms so unfortunately this gym is not accessible for me. If this were to change in future, I would consider becoming a member.

Negative experience: I used to be a big fan of ocean terminal pure gym but unfortunately I don’t like it anymore after renovation :( I absolutely hate cardio section as you feel like a monkey in the cage other people looking at you as they pass by in the shopping mall I hate it! As a women I feel not comfortable with that… I wish the window was not see through maybe put a sticker there? To block the view from the outside? :/ also the section with machines is so cramped :/ much less space. Disappointed

Negative experience: I go to this gym 4/5 times a week and can confidently say they’ve had air con on maybe once, fine on strength training days but me and my friends all really struggle with cardio here, and considering how much more this is making us sweat they might consider putting more than two cleaning stations in a gym that sometimes has 150 people in it at a time, it’s pretty grim. Other than that the staff and PTS are super helpful and friendly

Positive experience: Decent, clean gym with a great range of new equipment. I tend to go when it's quiet because it does get very busy. Biggest problem for me and many others I have spoken to though is the heat and lack of air con which can make cardio unbearable on warmer days.

Negative experience: The gym is far too hot and muggy. Very uncomfortable for working out. Changing room is too small, it's half the size of the old gym, with one toilet cubicle rather than the two at the old gym. Who decided that was appropriate?

Fantastic experience: If you visit one pure gym, you visit them all. I love these gyms for having everything that is necessary for a good workout and the location is great.

Negative experience: Disappointing that wifi continues to problematic. No wifi on two visits this week and very unreliable since opening. Given that this is advertised as a feature of the gym and our monthly payments, its resolution is overdue.

Fantastic experience: Great gym inside the Ocean Terminal Shopping centre. Free parking. Smart, refurbished gym. Would definitely train at this Pure Gym again

Fantastic experience: I've been to the Ocean Terminal Puregym about 50 times already this year and the renovation is a big improvement for my workouts. I really love it. I do mostly strength training with free weights and cables, so all the extra equipment is great. There's about a dozen places I can do squats now compared to the old gym, which had only two squat racks and one deadlift station only. I did a full hour in the PowerRack the other day and it was nice to not feel guilty that I was holding anybody back. The addition of a sled pull area is great. There are few better exercises for knee strength than a reverse sled pull, so there's no excuse for anyone in Leith to have bad knees now. There's also a glute trainer and a dedicated Hip Thrust station too with space to do box jumps and step ups. If legs and glutes are your area of focus there's literally nothing holding you back from having powerful legs. This is a big improvement over the old gym. The staff are friendly and everyone around me is always polite and respectful. I'm not sure what the point of separate fixed flat, incline and decline bench press stations are. Seemed like the renovation would have been a good opportunity to invest in 4 adjustable bench press stations. There's also very bright lights in your eyeline when you're trying to bench. Can these be dimmed? Personally, I would get rid of the decline bench as they are mostly useless. Replace it with a dip station or just spread things out a bit more. Overall I would rate this gym 5 stars for availability, versatility of equipment and general vibe.

Negative experience: Really disappointing new space. Depressing to work out in. No utilisation of potential views and barely any natural light. Cramped throughout. Not recommended.

Negative experience: I've been a member for over a year. The new renovation is awful. They've reduced the number of certain machines which were always busy, such as the machine arm curl, and the machine row. The layout is horrific, and it is very cramped in the machine section. To the point where on some machines you are quite literally back to back with a stranger if they are on the other machine as well (which is very likely due to my first point). The smith machines were always busy at the last location, and yet they haven't added any new ones here? Still only 2, while increasing the number of free weight racks. There is still no connection in the gym, and they have not sorted out the WiFi The water fountain (there's only 1) absolutely STINKS, and is already filthy with pre workout or protein or whatever poured down it. There's also no bottle tap anywhere. They've replaced all of the benches with a single pin style which moves the back support and base support at the same time. While normally this is fine, it does mean that for certain exercises it defines the angle of hips - it would be much better to still have a couple of the old, 2 pin benches to avoid this and allow people to make personal preference choices. There are no boxes for handle attachments anywhere, and they have removed some of the most popular attachments. You now have to wander around the gym looking for them which are now spread across the entire gym and due to the layout, you cannot see if a machine will be free or not if you substitute a machine exercise for a free weight one. If there was another budget gym in Leith, I would absolutely move there instead of staying here. They've managed to make an alright gym terrible unless you are strictly a free weight lifter. Awful.

Negative experience: Not happy with the new gym. Went for the first time yesterday, much less machines in a tighter space now. Was only 40 people in when I went and it felt tight, I will NEVER go in peak times, will be pointless. Also no way to clean the machines once you've used them without having to walk far from the machines having to leave your stuff in hope nobody starts using it by the time you’re back. Needs cleaning stuff where all the machines are. Why not use that whole area at the back beside the window to put more machines in? There’s already a designated space for classes anyway. That would resolve the space issue and lack of options for the machines. Please sort asap, I’d imagine most people will agree.

Negative experience: I went there last Friday since the upgrade it’s really small!! So crowded, people hugging the machines, less machines??? Wth is going on?

Negative experience: Edit 2: CEO has taken a stance on the Israel/Gaza conflict, make of that as you will. Sometimes it's better to shut up and not take a side. Disappointed and disgusted at such behaviour of a CEO New Gym is much smaller. More cramped and less machines, was there the other day and a lot of people hanging around trying to use equipment speak to a few people and they're in the same mind that it's smaller. Reconsidering membership despite being with them for a number of years. Edit : To add more context, I think the response doesn't understand that the new gym has moved into a new area of Ocean Terminal, the claim was it will be bigger and have a bigger weights area. Both statements are false, the gym is smaller and more compact and less machines than before. Go at 5pm and good luck in trying to follow a routine.

Fantastic experience: The new gym is amazing, 10/10 would recommend

Positive experience: Personally, I like the variety of fitness routines that could be accommodated in the new gym. But it does feel cramped in certain areas, at certain times (I've also yet to train at peak hours, I can't imagine what that's like). Also, more importantly, I find it lacking in machines compared to the old gym, both in terms of quantity and variety, making it hard to recommend for bodybuilding. The compounding of the small space and lack of machines unfortunately creates a bit of queuing and I doubt it would be possible to follow a strict workout plan. My workouts so far have been very improvised rather than structured due to the fact when a machine is open, you have a very short window to jump on it before it's taken. Workouts are prioritised more by equipment availability rather than workout plans and for that reason, I wouldn't be able to seriously recommend the gym. The second issue is the lack of variety, the old gym had some equipment that is unfortunately missing. For example, the lateral raise machine was fantastic for working around injuries. I think there's a lot of potential if the space was expanded and the stock of equipment was increased. But unfortunately, the gym currently isn't capable of meeting the demand that's required of it.

Negative experience: "Upgrade" is a debateable term. The gym recently moved within the centre to a smaller unit. This means you have the same number of people all vying for around two thirds of the space. This leads to a very busy and unpleasantly warm environment. On top of this, whilst the variety and overall quantity of equipment has been increased, the number of quite a few of the units have decreased. There's about four difference machines for doing different permutations your thighs but only one for abdominals, for example. You'll end up spending a lot of time wandering around or waiting whilst the machine's present occupier finished up. Decent space for classes, free weights and cardio machines but those aren't the sort of thing I use the gym for. On top of all this, its the most expensive "budget" gym in Edinburgh. Despite having been a member here for over five years, I think I'll be cancelling my membership soon and trying somewhere else.

Negative experience: Update: I've now cancelled my membership and lowered my review from 3 stars to 1 star because the CEO is a genocide apologist. Avoid this brand. Disappointed by the renovation and move. Feels very cramped and no longer has the beautiful sea view. It's still decent enough for the price but nowhere near as nice as it was.

Fantastic experience: Pros: - great range of lifting equipment and cardio machines - clean and modern - good location on the tram line and safe to bike to - quieter in non-peak - rarely need to wait for a machine - cool staff and regulars - ample parking for bike / car Cons: - it's in ocean terminal which is ocean terminating: poor mobile signal, WiFi sucks, toilets randomly break once every few weeks. - extremely busy in peak hours - I've completely changed my workout schedule to avoid going 5pm-8pm because it's just too much Overall: good gym, good location, the downsides aren't really something they can control. May get better in future when ocean terminal construction is finished and if some new gyms open nearby to share demand

Negative experience: Finally got to the new "upgraded" gym today. Should mention that when I went to the usual gym last week to find it closed with 0 communication from puregym that it would be so a wasted trip. The new gym boasts "a larger free weights area" is it? Maybe more squat racks but if anything there are less dumb bell benches than there used to be. The bench area is vastly smaller than in the previous location. The overall layout of some of the machines are all over the place. Pretty disappointed with it overall and may have to look elsewhere. Smaller than before even though waterfront is now closed

Fantastic experience: I started PureGym 5 weeks ago, I don’t consider myself a gym buff at all but I’ve really enjoyed the classes so far, particularly Body Tone, LBT and now the new Stretch class, which is a great follow-on class from LBT. Shout out to Sophie who is a legend! But all the staff so far have been welcoming and engaging. I’m looking forward to trying the Women’s Weightlifting Workshop too.

Positive experience: The gym is usually great, overall cleanliness has improved, but recently the gym has had a very strong fusty odour in both the main gym and changing rooms, and I notice quite a bit of wear and tear on the equipment generally. I'd love to know what plans there are for upgrading the gym while OT gets revamped.

Positive experience: Decent wee gym, has everything you need for a reasonable price. Been going for a year now and the heating is far too high during winter and obviously gets very busy in January. It isnt the biggest but most of the time it does the job.

Positive experience: A good sized gym with plenty of both cardio and weighted equipment. I wasn't very confident when I initially started going to the gym but the size of the gym means there is always plenty of space available if you would prefer to be in a quieter spot. The only thing I would say is the phone signal isn't great in the gym due to the type of building Ocean Terminal is. I struggle to access my workout plan if I am following online as there is no WiFi for members

Fantastic experience: A gym with a large space, very well maintained equipment, even full of people, I still have a good space for training, the professionals who work there are very good, the shower system is very good... Everything is very good!

Fantastic experience: Great gym, easy to access, lots of equipment and for the most part you can always find it available. It can get busy during peak times (early morning and evening), but even then it's manageable. The staff is approachable and helpful and other gym goes very cordial!

Fantastic experience: Best gym with the best of views

Positive experience: It’s a great space and the entry is automated with a pin / QR code. The washroom is a bit smelly and I don’t know how often they clean it. The equipments are of great quality and placed well in the space. It can be a bit crowded at times so better to choose a time when it’s not full of people. The app is really helpful and can be used for planning workouts.

Positive experience: Been here for a wee while now , lovely gym has everything I need and is always nice and clean .. only slight bug bear is that I can't seem to get onto the WiFi everytime I have tried and regular signal isn't gr8 for music streaming ( that said in there to work out not rave ) other than that highly recomend ( and have to others )

Negative experience: I like the affordability of the gym but there are a few things that really bug me. The biggest problem is there is only one squatting/deadlifting cage/platform which is nearly always busy so I have to wait to use it. It's not that the gym lacks space; the other presumably cheaper to buy bench press cages could be replaced with proper deadlifting cages/platforms. The light near the deadlift platform needs fixing as it constantly flickers. And as another reviewer has commented the taps in the changing rooms are broken. Update 26/02/24: Taps and lights are fixed. The BIG problem around only ONE deadlift/squatting cage (which is always occupied and usually has somebody else also waiting to get onto it) still remains (6 months after highlighting the issue). Often you have to wait half an hour (sometimes longer) to access the single squatting/deadlift cage. This is really disappointing. Update 16/04/24: Tried to gain access this morning but the gym was closed. The workmen said I should have received an email and there was a notice in the gym. I checked my emails and didn't receive any email from Puregym about the closure (should have said many with the closure highlighted in the subject line). Also didn't see any notice in the gym saying the gym was closed. Overall poor communication from management! Update 16/06/24: Overall I don't think there is any improvement over the old gym which seemed to have more floor space. None of my feedback on the deadlifting platforms/squatting cages was actioned in the new gym. There are more squatting racks but they don't have the option of adding safety supports so this is just an accident waiting to happen. The bench press equipment do not have safety supports either (I always have to ask for a spot). There is now only one toilet cubicle in the men's changing room (there used to be multiple). In the old gym, there was one proper deadlifting platform/squatting cage (see photo). In the new gym, there is now zero proper deadlifting platform/squatting cages. My main concern could have been addressed if management had just installed maybe 6 of these deadlifting platform/squatting cages which could be used for bench press, squats and a range of other exercises.

Fantastic experience: As a gym member, I can attest to the quality and abundance of exercise machines. Individual training is available and is recommended to help keep you motivated. I have my own trainer who has designed a very worthwhile yet strenuous programme for me.

Negative experience: I have been coming here for 8 months now. The gym is well equipped for its price. Affordable membership prices. I like the off-peak membership option. My reason for the 2-star rating is the male changing room. In the bathroom, the hand wash tap is always broken. The water is constantly running, even when nobody using them. Also, it’s blasting with full pressure which makes it almost impossible to wash your hands because you will get soaking wet. The hand drier is broken for 2 months now. The water waste this gym produces it’s unbelievable and shocking. I have also written an email about this to the gym to fix it. It would be a good gym but the ignorance to fix the hand wash tap and waste that much water is very upsetting.

Fantastic experience: I have been going to this PureGym for a couple of years now and I enjoy using the facilities. There is a multitude of machines and equipment which are available to use. However, I usually go early in the morning so cannot speak on how it is during busier times. The staff are always friendly and happy to have a quick chat or give advice. My only real complaint is the availability of equipment, in terms of free weights and the range of weights, in the cool down area in the back. But after raising this, it was explained to me that there was not possible due to structural reasons which is completely understandable.

Negative experience: Plenty of equipment to use... however: - There is no phone signal or wifi to connect to (Unless your an 02 customer) to use the puregym app so you can exercise safely as a beginner - Staff are seemingly non-existent or impossible to find as I can't see any wearing a uniform.

Positive experience: PureGym is good for an affordable, big chain gym. I've been to 3 or 4 different PureGyms before when I haven't lived near an independent option, and to be fair this is the best example of a PureGym I've been to. It's in a convenient and nice location, it's got plenty of well-maintained equipment and the staff seem friendly. There are hygiene stations dotted around where you need them for cleaning equipment. There are a few things that have made me lower my rating though. The classes are done out in the main gym behind a screened area, even though there's a seperate room that seems perfect for a studio located at the back of the gym. I can't imagine doing yoga with dance music blaring and people dropping weights in the background! It's really put me off doing their classes. I prefer going in the day as they have multiple lights that are flickering and need fixed and I'm scared this gives me a migraine. It would be a big hazard for anyone with epilepsy. And I HATE the sign on the women's changing room door! So condescending. I'm guessing this was head office issued though. Who ok'd that?! However for a PureGym it's a pretty good example and the lights are an easy fix. It is an affordable option in a safe area and the community who uses it makes it a comfortable place to be.

Fantastic experience: Spacious gym enough to feel free and unrestricted (well, as much as you can be in a gym), loads of equipment to try! Cleaning stations! Nice staff members! Switching to a gym with 24/7 access feels like a game changer so hopefully it will be true, slightly discouraged as the exit during the night for non drivers doesn't feel very safe as you have to go through a garage parking lot for a bit. Great value for money though with good range of gym classes included in a membership as well. Oh, one thing, the music is way too loud and annoyingly bad, but to be fair I've never seen a gym yet where it would be otherwise...maybe you could be the first one?

Fantastic experience: Clean, open 24/7, great selection of equipment and generally not too busy. Easy free parking is also a bonus.

Positive experience: Big space with plenty of machines (especially cardio). Great views from the front windows too. The roof has been leaking for months though with no sign of repair and a lot of the machines have broken seats or are not set up correctly

Positive experience: It's a good place to workout for Leith and surrounding people. I always visit during evenings and night times. Generally it is very busy during evenings and gradually rush gets down as the time passes. I prefer to work mostly during night times so that you can get equipments on time during workout.

Positive experience: Awesome gym, probably the best PureGym in Edinburgh! Good layout, plenty of equipment and free parking! Only issue is that it gets so hot! I'm not sure if the aircon is not working or if they put the heating on too much in the mornings, but I am always sweating to an uncomfortable level. I don't get this at other gyms, so I hope they can fix this.

Fantastic experience: It is a gym, that is all and that is what I like about it. I go, I exercise, I leave. It is clean, the staff are friendly and helpfull, when you need them. Lots of classes, if that is your thing, but no pressure if you just want to go and work out.
