Our comment from FitFit UK about Danielle Brown Sports Centre - University of Leicester:
The Danielle Brown Sports Centre at the University of Leicester offers a variety of facilities that are well-appreciated by its visitors. Users have praised the friendly and helpful staff, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The centre boasts a good selection of cardio machines, free weights, and a 25-meter swimming pool that maintains a comfortable temperature for lane swimming.
Many users highlight the affordable pricing for students, allowing access to quality workout equipment and classes. The changing rooms are spacious and generally clean, providing a pleasant experience before and after workouts.
However, some visitors have noted areas for improvement. The gym space can feel cramped and lacks essential weight machines, which may disappoint serious weight lifters. There have also been complaints about inconsistent maintenance and the pool's operational status, particularly during peak seasons.
Despite these critiques, the Danielle Brown Sports Centre remains a popular choice for students, offering solid facilities and a vibrant community atmosphere.
Danielle Brown Sports Centre - University of Leicester: Opinions
Fantastic experience: The staff are very friendly and helpful. It's busy but not too crowded. People are simply exercising. Nice place.
Positive experience: Good price for students of the University, good equipment but quite small. Pool is good. Staff often appear uninterested or unwilling to help, especially when receiving complaints. Classes very good and the instructors are lovely. Good for students who get a heavily discounted price, but not sure I would want to pay full price.
Negative experience: The changing rooms are nice and spacious and there's alot of cardio machines and free weights. Unfortunately though, there's just not enough weight machines with some important machines just not included... I regret buying my yearly membership as I wish I could cancel and go somewhere else that has what I need. I haven't used the other facilities yet but I'm sure they're fine.
Fantastic experience: Great staff. Pool is (only) 20m but a good temperature for lane swimming without being so cold that leisure swimmers get too cold. Steam, jacuzzi, sauna and chillaxing lounges are nice additions. Lockers require a £1 or token of same size that is returned. You can get membership which includes towels if you wish. See other reviewers for the gym and classes.
Negative experience: Tried to gain access, traffic cones across the entrance, and a barrier that says you need a permit to be allowed in ☹️
Positive experience: Great renovated facility, but some minor improvements could be made and so major reconsideration of the gym layout upstairs could be more thought out. Nevertheless, the student annual gym membership is worth the money and the facilities are great! However, the pool facilities are often not working.
Positive experience: The facilities weren't brilliant as quite outdated , vending machine didn't work and no other options for food or refreshments
Fantastic experience: Absolutely brilliant facilities & classes
Fantastic experience: go here for university, and for the amazing price of 15 pound a month, you get treated with a 5 star experience; from hygiene to customer service, to the high quality gym equipment, I would highly recommend this gym to anyone and everyone.
Negative experience: The staff are great, however the sports centre has been going down hill since the University took over. There is constant issues with maintenance and repairs that take for ever if at all. More recently there has been issues with the opening times of the pool. The excuse given has been shortage of staff and staff sickness. This shouldn't be an issue especially for this length of time. Maybe if you pay staff time and a half for Saturday and Double for Sunday that would help. Also employ more staff so the ones that are there don't go mad with boredom. And if you can't organise your self that way, why not build a cover for the pool so you don't have to close the whole spa area and infuriate members who pay good money to use it. Rant over.
Fantastic experience: I really like this gym staff are really nice and friendly, classes are fun! Good atmosphere clean toilet and changing room. Pool looks to be a good size.
Negative experience: Staff are so rude
Fantastic experience: Modern, fully equipped gym, small swimming pool with steam room and jacuzzi
Fantastic experience: GAINZ
Fantastic experience: Great facilities
Fantastic experience: Lovely staff, great equipment.
Fantastic experience: Great pool and spa
Fantastic experience: Amazing facilities. Includes Jacuzzi. Plenty of car park spaces Located inside Leicester University next to cricket pitch.
Positive experience: Gyms okay. The badminton courts have awful lighting
Positive experience: Relaxed gym with all the facilities. Very rarely crowded.
Positive experience: Clean gym. Good size. Never too busy.
Positive experience: Really disappointing that the pool has been out of action for so long, especially during the height of summer. I understand there are issues beyond the management's control, but plenty of other pools in Leicester are back up and running. Hopefully we can swim again soon.
Positive experience: Staff are very friendly and knowledgebase is good.. Facilities are excellent .. just some parts of changing rooms could do with a face lift but overall clean and tidy Update There seems to be a shortage of chlorine for swimming pool and spa which is now closed until further notice!!!!
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and very knowledgeable and helpful staff.
Fantastic experience: Well-equipped gym and lovely staff..
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Negative experience: Needs cleaning. Ladies shower area smells bad and sticky everywhere you touch.
Fantastic experience: Awesome facilities, friendly staff. No barbells though.
Positive experience: Nice gym with friendly staff, 25 m pool length and 1.2 m depth
Positive experience: From a weight lifting perspective its a decent gym with good quality machines and a wide range of free weights. However, it is missing key pieces of equipment like a bench press and it doesn’t have a free bar, only a Smith’s Machine which i find quite frustrating
Positive experience: Good gym but does not even have one Olympic bar...
Positive experience: Attended the Alice Ruggles Memorial Fencing tournament. Ideal venue for the competitors but frankly rather chilly for spectators.
Positive experience: Bana
Fantastic experience: Good fitness, also swiming pool. Enjoyed the training there
Fantastic experience: Great day out
Fantastic experience: Brilliant sports facilities and warm welcoming staff.
Fantastic experience: Amazing place
Positive experience: Good venue with easy parking.
Positive experience: Convenient location for students, but super small and overpriced for the equipment available. The free weights area is sparse and cramped, but there's lots of cardio machines if that's what you're into.
Positive experience: I'm updating my review because I am pleased to say that they they did get the accesible doors finally fitted. It is bit tight to to get around the modesty screen in a mobility scooter (mine has one of the tightest turning circles out there, but it is probably easier in a wheelchair) to get from changing area to pool corridoor, but it's an improvement. Great pool, and jacuzzi and all one level (I think 1.2 m).
Fantastic experience: Good
Positive experience: Good variety of equipment, not too busy most times. Membership could be cheaper.
Fantastic experience: Great
Positive experience: Cheap for students, but more expensive than most places for both visitors and memberships. Has a great range of equipment and facilities and fairly few people competing to use them, including weights, weight machines, treadmills and cycling machines, a swimming pool and (importantly) clean, high quality changing rooms, showers and lockers.
Fantastic experience: 很不错,就是会员没有按月付的,三月起步
Positive experience: Great equipment & classes but shower floors are filthy, mold in changing room ceiling, always out of wet & dry wipes for cleaning equipment. After recently swapping the men's & women's changing rooms around for a short time (repairs?) I have realised that the men's changing room is half the size of the women's with fewer showers & lockers. The shower cubicles in the women's are also much bigger. There is lighting in the women's shower area, the men's are quite dark.
Fantastic experience: Great sports venue
Fantastic experience: Great venue. Lovely staff. It's a shame the upper echelons at the University (I'm not talking about the Centre Manager) took a machine gun to their financial foot. I can only use occasionally now since they changed the rules and the finance options and don't allow alumni pay as you go members to take paying guests.
Positive experience: A very good University Gym. Staff are always very helpful and polite. Some of the staff are able to advise those who have mobility issues and ensure that they do sensible physical training. There is a good range of equipment including a 25metre pool. It is, I believe, only open to staff and students, though I may be wrong.
Positive experience: The new tissue dispensers are atrocious. Unhigienic to touch a dirty handle, and the paper often gets stuck inside and won't come out. Cable machine is always occupied, would be great to have a third one. Opening hours are very restrictive, centre should open earlier or close later - as an alumni member I pay £50 and feel this is not good value for money, but the staff are nice and the facilities clean, however there are improvements to be made.
Negative experience: As a gym pretty poor, no bench press, squat rack or deadlift platform. Limited space and too expensive would not recommend for weight lifting but does have other facilities.
Positive experience: Good gym. A bit expensive but worth it.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant sport center, gym, swimming pool, sauna, spa pool, steam.
Positive experience: Many gains made here
