Dunston Leisure Centre

Positive experience: My daughter has her swimming lessons here, which are great. The staff are always friendly and the pools and changing rooms are reasonably clean. I've also used the gym here which is a good size and there's loads of classes to take. I'm glad they kept it open, it would be a real miss.

Negative experience: some of the staff are extremely rude especially the women in the reception who’s a bit elderly. she had the biggest attitude every time i have been here. I tried to book swimming session for my siblings and she was being really difficult and saying she doesn’t advice it because of the swimming lesson they had afterwards. don’t need your input just do your job.

Fantastic experience: Amazing experience using the pool. It felt like I was in an ancient Roman bath house, except that everything was sparkling like new. And the staff were really friendly. It's my favourite swimming pool I've been to and I intend to return.

Negative experience: I’ve been coming here since I was around 18 ( over 3 years of coming here ) and never had any issues. However today I came back to the gym after a tough couple of weeks and I’m shocked at how unfriendly and rude the older woman on reception was. I had left my card at work which I never usually do but asked if I they were able to search me on the computer and simply open the door for me ( i know there able to), this woman refused to help me and told me to buy a new card when I already had one it was just accidentally left at work. So disheartening after I’ve came from work helping people all day for someone to not even be able to open a door for me ( a less than 5 second job for her to do ). Kindness costs nothing.

Fantastic experience: Great place to go, staff are friendly and plenty of things to do.

Fantastic experience: Went for the women’s only session for my first time at this pool, the vibes were there! Really nice and relaxed atmosphere with everyone lane swimming! The entry is cheap for the standard of pool, everything is kept nice and tidy. There are public and private shower cubicles too. The parking wasn’t an issue when I went but there were no lessons on and relatively quiet.

Fantastic experience: Very pleased with the helpful staff, clean facilities and good pool, with access to lanes I’ll certainly be back.

Fantastic experience: Car park can be very busy especially when classes are on in swimming as guardians tend to just sit in their cars whilst their prodigies have a lesson. There is alternative parki g around the suburbs.

Negative experience: Always enjoyed it here as its cheap and we come regular trying to help as we knew they were close to shutting down. Won't be back after today staff are so rude they don't like a simple question. Attitude was shocking then spent the full time atating and whispering picking on an autistic 12 year old. I will be taking it further but I really don't recommend especially if you have hidden disabilities as they're putting barriers in place that people are fighting so hard to remove at leisure facilities

Fantastic experience: Go there each week for swimming lessons. There are 2 pools,2 gyms a sauna and a whole host of other activities

Negative experience: Hopeless ... a place probably only for schools and other organized groups because an ordinary person when he would not like to swim or use the sauna is always closed because there are lessons and other activities .....Completely useless place

Negative experience: No cafe, water £2 a bottle in the vending machine, tea/coffee machine card only & not accepting cards! I had paid ten pounds to watch a gala plus it was £6.50 per race the swimmers entered but for spectators it was nine hours without proper refreshments.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic facilities and great value for money. Staff are always friendly and helpful and the place is always immaculately clean. Pools, gym and sauna are excellent. Sadly it appears the local Council are intent on closing it down next year to save money which would be a tragedy for the local community it has served for almost 60 years. I would urge people who love this place to complete the consultation document asap and contact your local councillors to fight this proposal.

Fantastic experience: Save our leisure centre ! Took out a membership with Gateshead leisure due to the facilities at Dunston; lovely deep pool, separate kids pool, sauna & steam room, we also appreciate the well equipped gym,( with a fab view) the friendly staff and the clean modern changing area. It would now appear that this lovely modern facility is at risk, due to the short sightedness and incompetence of Gateshead council.

Fantastic experience: Amazing place, have visited every part of the building except the gym but hope to go there soon. The kids’ pool is warm but not too hot, perfect for the little ones. The changing rooms are spectacular, clean most of the time and the perfect size. The main pool is always extremely clean and a good depth, easily standable at the shallow end and a good challenge to touch the bottom at the deep end. The lanes are long, and the flags across the lanes make it easy to see how far along you are, especially when doing backstroke, in which it is difficult to see ahead. The staff are always pleasant and there is plenty of them. I have only 3 minor issues: 1) In the main pool, there are 3 clocks - none of them are in time with each other. 2) The showers are a little too hot, but easy to get used to. 3) I have once been almost walked in on by a child while getting changed, as it seems you can unlock the changing rooms from the outside by swiping your finger across the vacancy indicator, but I am not sure many people would notice this. Once again, amazing location and perfect for going by yourself, with your family or with your peers.

Fantastic experience: Go swimming weekly here with my son, we use the small pool only. He loves it. Great facility for helping him build confidence in the water. Separated from the big pool which is good because it limits distractions. Staff are always friendly too.

Fantastic experience: Went here with my daughter to watch grandchildren while they were in the pool. I had never been here before but I was impressed with the spectator area as it was all individual seats and they were very comfy. The toilet facilities were really clean, and all the other areas of the swimming centre were too.. The lifeguards on duty were very vigilant, and all the staff were friendly and professional. I highly recommend a visit to Dunston leisure centre.

Fantastic experience: Clean, relaxing environment. Took our three year old and the pool isn't crowded and she loves it. It's also easy to book on the day which is why we come all the way from north Shields.

Fantastic experience: Outstanding leisure centre with helpful, friendly staff. Great that the swimming pool has reopened after 14 months being closed due to the pandemic. Sports and exercise are so important for people's fitness, long-term health (both physical and mental) and general well-being.

Fantastic experience: I've been swimming twice since they re-opened. Really well organised and the same friendly poolside staff. No problems booking either. Main differences to pre-coronavirus are a) need to book, b) follow one-way and wear a mask in corridors and c) no showers (unless e.g. you have a skin condition)

Fantastic experience: Staff are really friendly. Ample parking. Well maintained machines (which have all just been replaced with brand new ones) and always clean and tidy.

Positive experience: Nice place, seems clean and well maintained. The gym is small but well equipped and the pool and viewing facilties are great. My children swim here regularly and also at other pools in the area (they swim at least 4 times a week in various locations) and ALWAYS end up with a minor rash after swimming here. This happens to at least 3 of their friends who we know also. It's very minor and not a cause for serious concern but when we approached the staff about it they did seem rather dismissive and told us simply that it "was the cleanest pool in the area and that's why it might happen".

Positive experience: Use the little pool here with my young daughter. It's nice, lifeguards are friendly and attentative, they also put toys and floats in the pool. The little pool at Gateshead Leisure Centre is warmer mind.

Positive experience: My daughter attended her first lesson of Synchronized Swimming here with GSSC. A very professional club. The pool and changing rooms are very clean. There were lots of other classes going on too ie Spin class, fitness class and a well equipped gym. Most of the staff were pleasant.
