Our comment from FitFit UK about Rock Over Climbing:

Rock Over Climbing, located in Manchester, offers an exciting and welcoming environment for climbers of all skill levels. With a variety of climbing walls and innovative routes, visitors can enjoy numerous challenges that are regularly updated. The center has earned high praise for its friendly and accommodating staff who go out of their way to ensure everyone feels comfortable, whether they're seasoned climbers or first-timers.

Some of the standout features of Rock Over Climbing include:

  • A diverse selection of climbing walls catering to all abilities.
  • Regularly reset routes that keep the experience fresh and exciting.
  • A vibrant community atmosphere, with social events such as LGBT+ climbs fostering inclusivity.
  • Well-maintained facilities including clean locker rooms and toilets.
  • Affordable pricing options, including an attractive membership plan for regular climbers.
  • A cozy café offering snacks and refreshments, perfect for taking a break between climbs.

While the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, some visitors have expressed concerns about the maintenance and cleanliness of certain areas, particularly the ladies' locker room in one instance. Additionally, the shift away from soft play facilities has disappointed some families looking for activities for younger children.

Overall, Rock Over Climbing is highly recommended for its fantastic climbing experience, excellent staff, and the community spirit it nurtures. It’s a must-visit for anyone in Manchester looking to enjoy climbing in a supportive and vibrant setting!

Rock Over Climbing: Opinions

Fantastic experience: I have been coming here for nearly ten years. It is constantly changing and updating as well as the routes continuously changed. It's obvious the care that goes into everything involved. Staff are always friendly and accommodating. From going on my own, I now take my 8 & 10 year old. We all have loads of fun and find our own challenges.

Gary Dobson 2 months ago

Positive experience: Good climbing centre, staff very good and friendly, lots of walls for different skill levels, good prices and good introduction package.

Dave Houlbrooke 2 months ago

Fantastic experience: Loads of interesting wall shapes and great cave area for overhangs. Regular resets with creative routesetting. Fun staff and community.

Esther Spielman 2 months ago

Negative experience: Terrible softplay. Dirty and nothing to do. Came with my 2 kids having remembered it was a small softplay but now they've taken it all away and replaced with climbing walls. Charged me £16 for my little kids who couldn't climb. Very disappointed

Hi Esther, sorry to hear you had a bad experience at our centre. We have changed the Rock Over Climbing experience over the years to best suit our customer and we no longer have the facilities to accommodate very young children. If you would like to message me on [email protected], I would happy to see if I can help you further.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely fantastic climbing arena, the staff are friendly and informative. Walls are both challenging and unique, both for beginner to advanced. Small cafe options are a great addition, snacks and crisps too! Locker room and toilets are clean and well maintained! Highly recommend this bouldering facility!

Fantastic experience: Cool place, good climbs

Fantastic experience: Best climbing gym there is, the routesetting is interesting even at lower levels, the staff are amazing, and it's big enough that even when it's pretty busy you can always find climbs to do!

Fantastic experience: An amazing place to start your bouldering journey or even if you’re a seasoned climber. Caters for everyone. Not to mention the staff working there is amazing and friendly. The best thing is the community at RockOver… they just make you feel like you’re at home

Fantastic experience: Great place. Had a kids birthday party here. A variety of wall climbs, well equipped venue and friendly staff. Great for climbing and chilling with friends or solo. Reasonable priced.

Fantastic experience: Visited Rock Over Climbing Bolton on a work trip, and was really impressed. The photos don't do it justice really. Plenty of bouldering routes at all grades. Well marked with grades, and some really interesting problems to solve. Staff really friendly and helpful and nice atmosphere

Benjamin Nealon (Sky) 6 months ago

Fantastic experience: I've been to about 10-15 climbing places across the UK and this is by far my favourite. I go about twice a week. There is a really great selection of climbs, not just in terms of grade but also type. Even if you're newer to climbing, there's still a nice range of climbs for you (i.e., they're not all jugs). They also reset routes at a good frequency, meaning there's pretty much always something new for you to try. It never feels like there's anything has been there too long. The gym has a spacious layout which means that unless you're going at peak times, it never feels too busy. And even when you are, you can usually find a quiet spot or two. The staff are always very friendly and on-hand to help out. I've also been to the LGBT+ social (occurring every other Friday) and it's a really fun energy. If you are a regular, I also HIGHLY recommend getting a membership. It's about £45 for the month and gives you unlimited climbs. As long as you are going at least 4 times a month, it pays for itself. All in all, just a fantastic bouldering gym. One of the best.

Hayden 7 months ago

Fantastic experience: Always a gripping experience. If you're new they will help you get a foothold, I'd always reccomend chalked up to their amazing staff.

Fantastic experience: Never went climbing before, I went twice in the past month. Love this place. It gets crowded at some times, but generally only for a little while.

Ahmed Farrag 10 months ago

Fantastic experience: Not the 1st time there and defo not the last. Amazing interior setup with additional gaze of beauty being inside the church. Very well maintained and introductions are covered swiftly by the expert team on shift. We did bouldering and Reel-up climbing using the all day pass for £11 + £7 for the gear (harness, shoes, and powder chalk). If you go at sunset, make sure not to miss the sun rays through the colorful glass windows, a real treat for the eyes. A must visit and great social activity when in Manchester.

Yizhou Kuang 11 months ago

Fantastic experience: Excellant route setting. However could use some renovation (leaking problem, missing one piece of 8mm chips on the fingerboard etc) The gym is brilliant but could be nice with some soft resistance bands or even TRX bands.

Ocean Wong 1 year ago

Negative experience: First time I was there, it was alright. People were friendly and I could climb just fine. But the second time I got there, I sprained my ankle on the uneven matting inside the cave when coming down from the ceiling-push black route. This is gonna take aaages to heal. I'm not coming back again, man. Not until the matting is fixed.

Liam Wright 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Good place to climb, a good variety of challenges regardless of your ability.

Jonas Treifi 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Very good bouldering they have something for all ages and abilities it's really big and there are so many different climbs they also sometimes have a belay area which also really good

Joel Moore 1 year ago

Positive experience: Super friendly staff, good coffee. In terms of climbing there seemed to be alot of chalk on most of the holds and some of the matting needs refreshing. All round decent setting, fair amount of climbing with varying wall types.

Ric Smith 1 year ago

Positive experience: Really enjoy coming here. As someone very much with the beginner bracket having been climbing inconsistently over the past few years, the are lots of problems for me to have a go at. Staff are friendly and there's always a nice atmosphere. Routes reset regularly. Great place to climb

Fantastic experience: Rock Over is amazing! As a newbie to bouldering, there's something here for people of all abilities, and it feels super welcoming. Niamh and Paige are absolute gems. They're friendly, helpful, and make the whole experience a breeze. I've been attending the LGBT+ social climbs now for a few months because Niamh has created such a lovely little community. Whether you're a pro or just starting out, with Niamh around, it's always a good time – laid-back, friendly, and inclusive.

Fantastic experience: Really friendly climbing gym - went with our toddler and a couple of other young families. We had an absolute blast and can't wait to come back in the new year

itsjustselinaa 1 year ago

Negative experience: Too expensive in my opinion, DEPOT Manchester is a bigger place and entries are much cheaper. The place is dirty and old, doesn't look well looked after, the routes are okay, just the place isn’t top notch.

Janet Rhodes 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Brilliant. We visited last night as a social event for Lostock Athletic Club. Everyone had a great time. The instructors Harry, Naf and Simon supported everyone to have a go and get the most out of the session. We will be back!

Negative experience: The most expensive climbing gym in Manchester at the moment and the dirtiest too. I wish they cleaned the toilets or the changing rooms now and then.

Rock Over Climbing
Rock Over Climbing

Hi there, Thank you for the feedback and although our toilets and changing rooms are deep cleaned daily and checked throughout the day, we do appreciate there is always room for improvement and will be reviewing our cleaning standards. If you do notice any part of the centre to be below the standard you would expect please do let a member of staff know at the desk and we'll be happy to address it. Kind regards, Jordan Dunne & the Rock Over Climbing Team.

Fantastic experience: My friend offered to take me climbing for the first time in years. Before we arrived I was told it important to stay hydrated. I was handed a bottle of water, unbeknownst to me had been spiked with LSD. I arrived at the gym and was met by friendly staff who welcomed me. I had a coffee and got my shoes on and approached the wall. As I began to climb the hand holds melted off in my hands, and soon I was swimming in a multicoloured sea. I drifted for hours and was eventually swallowed in a whale. All went dark and every fear and insecurity for the past 3 and a half decades visited me. I snapped out of it sometimes later. I was naked, it was raining and I was on the roof, surrounded by the police, I screamed which startled one of the officers and they fired a Taser at me. I fell off the roof, the Taser bars ripped my nipple off as I fell down. I gained a concussion. When I woke in the hospital they said they couldn't save my nipple, it was charred black from the electricity. I was released on bail and got my own climbing shoes the next day a got a month membership.bwould recommend this place to anyone. My court date is next month, wish me luck so I can continue climbing here! Also the coffee was pretty good.

Fantastic experience: Really fun. Spent 3 hours there, I’m a total novice to climbing, the staff and members were all really nice. Learnt so much, will be back in future!

James 1 year ago

Positive experience: Used to be a great centre but despite its size there’s not a great deal to climb. Blocs are really sparse, usually no more than only 1-2 of each grade per section.

Harriet Sutherland 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: We did a family introduction session everyone loved it and the staff were fantastic

Haseeb Khan 1 year ago

Positive experience: Cool place, but I don't think the walls are tall enough and or dynamic enough

Claire B 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Excellent!!! Definitely five stars! Brought my six year old here today and it was brilliant! Really cheap and such good fun. Staff brilliant, really helpful and friendly. One staff member in particular helped us a lot with the bigger wall and harnesses. We are 100% coming back. If you're an adult and accompanying a child, wear comfortable clothes because if you're physically able to join in; you will definitely want to! Excellent place. They also serve food and have good facilities.

Fantastic experience: Great bouldering walls, lots of rooms with a huge choice. Good vibe and friendly staff. Great central Manchester location!

Fredrik Shaw 1 year ago

Positive experience: Good climbing gym, very big, so lots of fun and interesting routes. Can be fairly confusing to find your way around at first and some of the holds seem a bit worn, but would recommend!

Thibaut 1 year ago

Positive experience: The space is so big, so much potential but there’s barely any climbs on the walls, littérale 8 climbs of a grade which is ridiculous. Might need to bring in more setters if they want the gym to be good. Staff is very nice good contact and the setting is fun but lack coordination problems, quite old style of climbing. Training area is also very old seems like their investing all the funds in the new gym which is sad cause this one has so much potential.

Fantastic experience: Brought my children here for a junior rock climbing taster session. It was brilliant!! Every member of staff we met was lovely and encouraging. Great coaching and saw my kids get more confidant and skillful just in the 1 session. Fantastic bouldering courses that get changed weekly to keep the challenge fresh and a great cafe for the observers. We will be back and signing up for the next the junior rock climbing course.

Fantastic experience: Really good place best I've been to. Location is off to the side a bit but it's really sik. Has all the v levels and are changed regularly. The staff is nice and helpful and it's easy to book days and sort out subscriptions and stuff. Love it.

Fantastic experience: Mat our instructor was fantastic and friendly. This was our first visit as a family and would definitely return. Loads of climbing walls with a great relaxing environment no pressure to do more than your ability. Perfect way to spend the day as a family with reasonable prices.

Jen Bee 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Had such a great time, we did an introduction session for adults and it was really useful we were taken around the venue and explained the numbering system and gave different climbs a go. Afterwards we were able to stay and climb on our own. Would definitely recommend it for anyone new to climbing or anyone who hasn't done it in a long time.

Craig Prior 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Came down for a competition and was thoroughly impressed, biggest bouldering gym we have been to with some excellent setting. Has indoor bike park trianing area, soft play for kids (although very small) lovely fresh pizzas and had a lovely coffee, worst bit about it was finding all the areas as it was so big. Will definitely be back

Sh E 1 year ago

Positive experience: most the photos of the kids areas and kids climbing have been taken out unfortunately. there are about 7 belay (clip on auto safety cord) walls left and 2 sections of the soft play space. it's still more kid freindly then a lot of the climbing centers tho. and costs just £14 for an (under 11 I think) my daughters almost 5

Rock Over Climbing
Rock Over Climbing

Thank you for your review. All feedback is greatly appreciated. The photos showing the previous kids areas are not owned by us and therefore we cannot take them down. We currently have 8 auto-belay lines for use in the centre. Prices for U13 are £8.00 with an additional cost of £3.00 if you wish to rent shoes.

Fantastic experience: A great climbing centre but it's difficult to know which colours are the right difficulty.

Paul Sanders 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Went here this week and had a great time. I went on my own, climbed about an hour, had a coffee and met some better climbers. Two other single women got together for mutual support and the five of us coached each other up things we struggled with. So 10/10 for friendliness of customers, the same for staff. Huge centre, well routed. It is about 12 -15 minutes walk from Piccadilly Station. Under five from Victoria. Also, an indoor bike park. Take a padlock for your locker

Fantastic experience: First time climbing ever. I have to say the staff and the people that go here are incredibly friendly. I have never been surrounded by so many kind lovely people. Fantastic experience: Really like this facility. they have a 10x entry thing on their app which is great for people like me who cant afford or have enough strength or to go enough times for the monthly membership. Was very happy when i found this out. they change the routes a lot too. Some great slab problems with a lot of thought in the changes each week. They have some good community groups also which is great, womens group and an lgbt group every 2 weeks. They do have a free sessions thing for minority ethnicity groups tho which is a nice idea but i think because of where we are maybe this would be better as a group for low income rather than the colour of peoples skin. a great place tho and everyone is friendly :)

Fantastic experience: If you live anywhere near manchester it is a great place to start learning! Easy to reach from the city centre and a reasonable price. Plenty of climbs for all difficulties.

Positive experience: My son enjoyed his birthday here, but the experience was very rushed, it would have been good to have an extra 30 minutes.

Danny 2 years ago

Negative experience: This was the first climbing gym I started going to regularly, it seems to have a great variety of climbs, good gym and cheap prices. I've since moved to an area meaning an hour walk to get to it however am considering the effort due to it being so good there. Edit- After 2 years of enjoyment at rockover it has really gone down hill, the head setter left and the setting has taken a serious hit, clunky, uncoordinated climbs that are heavily influenced by build. They are slowly getting rid of all their gym equipment and the prices continue to rise significantly. I have since moved to blochaus and found a new enjoyment for climbing and had significant improvements after feeling like maybe I was just going off it.

Fantastic experience: Been today for my daughters 7th birthday party. Absolutely fab place, Matt the party host was great and really engaged with the kids. They all had a great time and hopefully we have inspired some future climbers! My only feedback to the team is with regard to the party room. It could do with some tlc and some music maybe, but perfectly adequate.

Fantastic experience: I started going to rock over at the start of 2022 with zero climbing experience. I'm a pretty fit 50 year old who mostly does martial arts, and thought I'd try something different. It's always a challenge, there is anyways something new, or there is a climb that's just challenging you and your can try, try and try again. The climbs are changed regularly so you won't get bored! My wife finally decided to join me, and she has started coming along as well. The only negative I can give is that there is no air conditioning on really hot days. It's ace!

Fantastic experience: Just by sheer luck I found this place and booked a party for my 7 year old and his friends.... Thought it might be fun to try something different and thankfully I was right! Big thanks to the team, especially Nathan, Nick and Matt who instructed the climbing party and all had the patience of saints, making sure everyone was involved and had fun. After the party we went to the 'party room' .... which was basic but adequate. Major mum fail as I'd overlooked this and not planned and decorations The kids were served pizza, which was actually really good and I think prepared in house. They also provided Crisps and brownies. I'd taken sweets, chocolate and birthday cupcakes. Would definitely recommend this place, my son loved it.

Fantastic experience: My favourite climbing gym in the region. Good variety of styles and grades, helpful and friendly staff. Not intimidating or overwhelming like some other places can be. Grading is usually pretty accurate.

Ferdia 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: I had a great day. The staff are lovely and welcoming... I felt very comfortable the moment I walked through the door. It was my first time climbing in Manchester, there are lots of spaces/bike racks for bicycles inside the premises so I knew my bike was safe while climbing. Can't wait to go back again :)

James Godwin 2 years ago

Positive experience: Great well established bouldering wall. Pretty big, can get busy in peak hours though and the bouldering layout can get tight. Plenty of problems to go at and training parts (specific gym part) but grading can be hit and miss. Still worth the visit and recommend making it a go to and or on your climbing wall visit rotation.

Naeem Anjum 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Came here for my daughter's birthday party and along with a few select school friends they had lots of fun, with a designated climbing instructor they tried a few different challenges and after an hour were treated to some pizza, juice and brownies in a separate party room. Overall it was a nice experience for the party and I would definitely recommend.

Caleb Kane 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: The best climbing centre I have ever been to. They have the best variety, the best route setters. They care about every ability and do not have a corporate feel. Fantastic experience: Fantastic and clean facilities and equipment, with helpful staff, easy sign-up with multiple options and cheap prices. Fantastic experience: We did the birthday party offer. The kids loved it, got to go on all the different types of walls. Our host was great. Great value. Party room for food could have had a bit more effort made, was a bit like sitting in a tiny office.

Joshua Parry 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Classic climbing wall. It has some old school vibes being located in an older building and having a random mix of rooms and training areas. A massive variety of boulders and areas so it was easy to find space even when the wall was busy. There's a nice big functional training area upstairs and some free weights too. Took about 5 mins to sign up and get registered and a competitive price with all the other walls too.

Daniel Wood 2 years ago

Positive experience: My favourite bouldering centre in Manchester, good variety of holds and route setting is usually fun and challenging! Since they use tags to denote climb difficulty you get to climb on more varied climbs than somewhere like the Depot which I think makes for a better experience. Centre is constantly changing and making tweaks to how they operate to try to improve! I am disappointed in their lack of challenging slab climbs compared to other centres in Manchester, especially since the slab of the week. In the past there would usually be something challenging to try but now I barely even look at the slab which is a shame as it is my favourite style. I’d like to see something a bit more desperate left on the slab for a while to project.

Rock Over Climbing
Rock Over Climbing

Hi Daniel, thanks for your review! We're glad you're enjoying most of the centre and our style of routes. Have you tried our slab in Unit 2? There are some pretty hard offerings on there. We'll also be bringing back the slab in the Hub from the 12th Feb - it's a movable wall that's currently at an overhang. Sorry to hear that you're not enjoying the Slab of the Week as much as our other customers. We'll have some harder ones on there soon, our aim at the moment is to get more engagement before increasing the range of difficulties set. It's a great way to practice movement patterns at lower grades. We've got many more projects in the pipeline, and I think you'll enjoy them! Cheers, Tom

Negative experience: The place is great, staff was amazing, they were so kind and patient helping my 5 year olds and I on our first time climbing. Prices were good also. Only major problem getting this score is the awful smell in the ladies locker room and bathroom. It was the most awful sewage smell I've ever experienced.

Rock Over Climbing
Rock Over Climbing

Thank you for the really positive feedback with regards our staff, the climbing and your general first experience climbing. With regards the issue with smell in ladies changing room. Please never hesitate to tell the staff at the centre of any issue as we take customer comfort, centre presentation and hygiene very seriously. We have identified an issue in the basement of the building affecting the drainage. Our plumber has been called and will be on site today investigating. We have checked the other toilets and 3 disabled / children toilets and have no issues here and these can be used by customers safely while issue being resolved. Please can you email into [email protected] your contact details so we can arrange a free family climb with one of our instructors. Again thank you for alerting us, we apologies for the discomfort caused and be assured we are dealing with the issue right now. Many thanks Tom Stewar Owner, Rock Over Climbing

Fantastic experience: A very great and friendly atmosphere for family's and groups and a special thanks to Mr Kane who was leading the group of children in a very professional manner and friendly. We enjoyed too much thanks for everything.

Fantastic experience: My daughter has just had her birthday party here. Booking was easy - I did it online and received a confirmation email instantly. I phoned up to confirm some details and the person that I spoke to was friendly and helpful, as were all of the staff on the day. There was free parking for customers opposite the venue. Sign in was easy. The venue was clean and had plenty of seated areas for adults to sit down whilst the children were climbing. Children had ample time in the different areas and because they moved to different rooms, never got bored. Even the children that were nervous about heights had a great time. Their instructor was really good with them. The food was ready as soon as they had finished climbing and there was plenty - 3 large pizzas between 8 children (ages 9 - 12) and crisps and large chocolate brownie each. I would recommend Rock Over Climbing to anyone. All the children have gone home very happy and wanting to climb more in the future. As a parent of 2, this is the least stressful party I have arranged or attended. Good value for money.
