Our comment from FitFit UK about Blackland Lakes Health Club:
Welcome to Blackland Lakes Health Club, located in picturesque Calne, United Kingdom. This charming health club is known for its friendly atmosphere and supportive community. Members often rave about the exceptional swimming pool and well-equipped gym, which is never too crowded, providing a serene environment for workouts.
Visitors appreciate the warm and welcoming staff, who are dedicated to making everyone feel valued. The club also features a lovely café, ensuring a relaxing experience for all members.
Some users have mentioned that membership can be a bit pricey, but many feel it offers a significantly better experience compared to local leisure centers. Members also have access to engaging fitness classes and a quiet space for relaxation.
While the facilities are generally praised, there have been some concerns regarding the cleanliness of the changing rooms and occasional issues with the maintenance of the pool area. However, the management is actively working on these aspects and takes member feedback seriously.
Overall, Blackland Lakes Health Club is a perfect place for those looking to maintain their health and fitness in a supportive and friendly setting.
Blackland Lakes Health Club: Opinions
Fantastic experience: I sort of dont want other people to know about here because I do t want it to get too busy! A friendly, personal, small place with a gym that is never too busy but has every thing you need and a brilliant swimming pool.
Negative experience: Been here many times and is generally really good. We booked a fishing peg days in advance to find some people already in it, went to reception expecting them to ask the people to move but we were offered another peg, sounds petty but my daughter likes to fish that part of the lake, so our mini camping and fishing experience was a bit of a disappointment. Also listening to their dull music tones did not help swing our mood.
Fantastic experience: The pool and sauna are wonderful and the staff are so helpful, warm and welcoming. On top of that, I have recently been treated with kindness and compassion by the team, whilst going through something difficult. They made me feel like a valued client. A shining example of customer service and a business that cares.
Fantastic experience: Well equipped gym and beautiful pool in a relaxed setting. This is a members only health club, so infrequent visitors to the campsite at Blacklands Lakes don't get access, which was a relief, as I worried it would be overcrowded with tourists. Has a cafe and no shoe policy making the environment really accessible. Membership is a little pricey, but you pay for a much nice experience than a Council leisure centre.
Fantastic experience: Small , but never too busy. Great gym and sauna .... heres to a slimmer waistline
Negative experience: Was rude to our kids and threw them out
Hi Luke,
If I am not mistaken you were staying at Blackland Lakes campsite and your children wanted to use our facilities. Unfortunately, as they will have had explained to them, we are a members only facility and therefore we could not allow them to use the pool and gym etc.
We ensure these rules are enforced all year round in order to provide the best service possible to our members. However, we are sorry if your children felt that any of our staff were rude we definitely would not have wanted to come across that way and pride ourselves on good customer service. We certainly would not have thrown them out but, we understand that it was most likely a disappointment for them to hear that we would not allow them to swim.
Kind regards,
The Blackland team
Fantastic experience: Lovely campsite ! please notify people when changing the gate code. Only downside we had was the block of toilets next to us & fishing lake were closed due to being october :( its a long way for the oldies to walk when fishing especially when dark! Had a great week tho! :)
Fantastic experience: Clean, friendly staff , great leisure club
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and friendly staff.
Positive experience: Love the use of the pool and sauna- changing rooms could do with an update as they're looking dated and shower cubicles would be an asset as no real privacy.
Fantastic experience: I love this place. My weekly solace for health and fitness.
Fantastic experience: Great little health club ,friendly staff .
Fantastic experience: Segregated pool area to separate length swimmers from the children's area. Easy access to the pool using shallow steps, ideal for arthritis sufferers. Fairly standard gym equipment that is easy to operate. Friendly, helpful staff
Fantastic experience: Great little find. Limited facilities, but this only adds to the charm of this health club. The staff seem to know all members by name and make an effort to chat and get to know you when you visit. The classes are good fun and you don't feel like you're being pressured to keep up if you can't. Members are kept up-to-date with regular emails and COVID safety measures are taken seriously. I like that it is a welcoming environment, as gyms I have visited in the past have been quite intimidating. If you want a gym that isn't full of people posing in the mirror, this place is for you!
Fantastic experience: Lovely surroundings, facilities and staff just leave you to relax.
Positive experience: Lovely walks from this site. Really friendly staff. Gents toilets / showers great (so I am told) - ladies in need of an upgrade or I would have scored a 5.
Fantastic experience: Had a brilliant swim tonight!
Fantastic experience: Great swimming pool, lovely team!
Fantastic experience: This club is lovely and situated in a peaceful setting. All the staff are wonderful and extremely helpful (especially Gemma who I have PT sessions with). The pool is heated and a great size with a specified lane. The club takes hygiene very seriously and the gym is very well equipped. There are even 2 ducks that will come and great you when you are entering or leaving the gym. I am very lucky to have such a great facility close by!
Thank you for your review.
We are pleased that you are enjoying the facilities, and hope you continue to enjoy our time with us. We will pass your very kind comments onto the staff.
Kind regards,
The Blacklands Team
Fantastic experience: Blacklands health club is amazing I have been a member for 16 years, special club, friendly, fabulous classes, lovely friendly staff who cannot do enough for you, very special place love it! Feels like home! In a beautiful countryside setting too

Negative experience: The staff are very friendly and helpful and the swimming pool is lovely. I would rate these elements 4/5. However the ladies changing rooms are not cleaned often enough and as a result are dirty and unhygienic. The club considers that plastic covers over shoes, which they do not insist upon all users wearing, is a substitute for cleaning the changing rooms. This is a private health club and there is a minimum expectation that the changing rooms are clean, with a view to maintaining this standard throughout the day. Recently, the soap dispenser in the ladies changing rooms was nearly empty but had been filled up with water. This was still the case the following week. Poolside is not much better. The orange plastic plaster, stuck in the plastic grill at the end of the part of the pool dedicated to lane swimming, was still there the following day. These are simple things that can be binned upon cleaning the poolside. Perhaps this suggests that the poolside gets a commensurate amount of attention as the changing rooms. Clearly, standards of cleanliness are not a high priority at this club. I have raised the above issues verbally now with three members of staff over several months and nothing has changed. I suggested that there ought to be a cleaning rota in place that allows a minimum of 3 cleans daily, including a mop or equivalent in the changing rooms for members to clean the dirty floor, in absence of the staff doing it. This is not a good look for a private club. Currently, I am told that the changing rooms are cleaned once in the morning and again before they close, bearing in mind that they are open from early in the morning, through to 10pm. The staff have advised that unfortunately there is not always a female member of staff on duty to clean the changing rooms; its difficult to gain access in between sessions; and if members consider the changing rooms in need of a clean, they should raise this with staff. It is not the responsibility of the members to raise this issue with the staff, it is the managers responsibility to ensure that a sufficient cleaning rota is in place and to manage the staff rota to ensure that there is a female and male member of staff on duty at all times to implement it. The lack of such a rota and management, explains why the changing room floors are so dirty. One can overlook the dated appearance of the changing rooms, the wall and floor tiles having remained the same for 20 odd years, however, it's more difficult to overlook the lack of basic cleanliness, which is unacceptable on every level. Users of the changing rooms are having to plan ahead and bring flip flops for themselves and their children, just to avoid standing on the dirty floor. I hope that the owners of this club become aware of this situation, which I should think is rather embarrassing and should motivate them into ensuring that their staff are taking this more seriously. I am sure that members would be in support of seeing a female member of staff cleaning the changing rooms often during the day, as this will be of benefit to members and to the club's reputation.
Thank you for taking the time to express your concerns regarding cleanliness at Blackland Health Club; we are sorry that you felt you had to leave a review, as following your earlier conversation with two female members of my staff, this was brought to my attention and the regularity of the cleaning has been increased.
I would like to reassure you that cleanliness and hygiene are in fact taken extremely seriously here, and there is a daily structure with routines in place to ensure that standards are maintained consistently throughout our opening hours. We use professional contract cleaners to clean the Club overnight, 7 nights a week, at considerable cost, and the staff check and clean the changing-rooms at regular intervals when the Club is open. However, your last visit happened to coincide with baby swimming classes and when the Ladies changing-rooms are so busy, especially with babies being changed and all this entails, it is very difficult to physically clean without getting in the way of Members, and this is why we usually wait until after the session.
Regarding male and female staff, we have a 50/50 split of each and although it is difficult for a male member of staff to access the ladies (and vice versa) to clean I will be encouraging this on the shifts when there are no female colleagues; with a small team it is simply not always possible to have one male, one female, on as you suggest, although clearly this would be ideal.
Finally, I would like to add that we always take feedback from members extremely seriously, and are obviously concerned that you have been sufficiently disappointed to raise this issue on several occasions. Please be reassured that I am studying all the points you have raised and the cleanliness of the Club will remain at the forefront of my priorities.
Kind regards,
Rupert Crockett

Fantastic experience: Lovely warm pool. ☺
Fantastic experience: Excellent pool!
Positive experience: A good gym with adequate facilities. The swimming pool is very good. The gym equipment is just a little bit tired.
Positive experience: Friendly, quiet and with a lovely warm pool.
Negative experience: Staff is brilliant, however the whole of the club is outdated, the last time they had anything done must of been back in sixties, so looks and feels abit shabby chick. Otherwise great family club potential.
Negative experience: Staff were very friendly and helpful. However, the pool had bad lighting so was very dark, and it was not very clean. The pool water feels very oily and full of chemicals, not all the showers worked, and the changing rooms were very cramped. I can't comment on the gym as I didn't try it.
