Fantastic experience: Our Daughter has attended SNW Karate for a few months now and gained her Yellow belt yesterday. She loves her sessions and cannot miss it. Sensai Steve is amazing and so caring with my daughter (aswell as the others) and spent time guiding her. He nurtures the SNW Karate family as thats what we all are. The confidence in both my kids who are in the group is out if this world and so lovely to see. They both have that fire in their bellies and in their eyes to succeed even further and its all down to SNW Karate. Thankyou to you all. X

Negative experience: My children trained here for 7 years. At the start, when parents were encouraged to observe lessons, we had a good impression of Sensei Steve. One of the parents voiced concerns to us and left the club early on, but we didn't read into it at the time. When Covid hit, we continued to support the club during lockdowns even as Zoom lessons became less engaging. Most of the other subscribers left, which was understandable. We continued at a reduced rate but during this time we started to notice changes in the clubs leadership and tone. Those who paid extra for 1 : 1 lessons were rewarded with higher belts and those who could not afford to pay extra, made slower progress. After reopening, prices rose quickly, with less flexibility for students training needs. Subscription models changed frequently and the clubs true nature began to show. Sensei's attitude shifted - he became more controlling and less approachable. We observed clear favoritism towards certain students, which left, others including my children feeling overlooked. The state of the floors was particularly disappointing - often dirty, and clearly not up to standard where students train barefoot. This lack of cleanliness felt at odds with the values Karate is meant to represent. The true spirit of karate training should be about enjoying the journey of learning a new skill, developing discipline and participating with others - least of all paying for and chasing after the black belt. Not every student is obsessed with gaining the nth Dan black belt and in reality, most people who train in karate, will leave before they reach black belt status. That's perfectly okay. The true spirit of karate lies in humility and personal growth, not in promoting an elitist mindset that overlooks the deeper values of this noble art. In my opinion, Sensei seems to have lost his direction in this respect. Also please be aware, karate experts should remember the law takes a very serious view of using martial arts against members of the public. Trained individuals are held to higher standard, and any use of force must be strictly necessary and proportionate. Unjustified or excessive use of karate can lead to criminal charges, as the law may view it as assault or misuse of a dangerous skill. This you must be aware. Despite the issues, my children earned higher belts through consistent effort. However, due to rigid schedules and Sensei's inflexibility, we eventually choose to stop. Sensei no longer seemed to focus on students' development but more on his own business side of the club. That said, we're grateful for the kindness shown by the assistant instructors, who were patient and fair and for the friendships my children formed with the other students. That sense of comaraderie was one of the most positive aspects of our 7 years time at the club. The Christmas closures also lacked consideration - the club shuts down for 2 weeks with no compensation except a few sweets and party games in the final lesson. Also, each student will be required to pay to renew their karate licence / insurance every year. We know this is a long review, but we feel it is warranted after such a long term involvement. Sensei had previously asked members to leave reviews, and we had been hesitant before now for fear of offending Sensei, but now we share our review with honesty and without bitterness. We hope it offers a sincere and balanced view for both perspective members and those already involved with the club.

We’re sorry to hear that your recent experiences didn’t meet the standards or expectations you once held of our club. At Snw Karate, we constantly strive to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all students, and we take all concerns seriously.
To address some of your specific points:
• Student Progress & Belt Advancement: Progression is always based on individual effort, ability, and readiness as assessed by our instructors. We did offer optional 1:1 lessons on zoom, for those seeking extra support, during covid, but this was never a requirement for progression. All students are given equal opportunities to achieve their goals through our regular classes.
• Subscription & Pricing: Changes to our pricing and membership models over the past few years were made in response to rising costs, and to ensure the continued viability of the club for all. We always strive to communicate any changes as clearly as possible and to offer the best value for our members.
• Cleanliness & Facilities: Cleanliness is a fundamental part of our ethos, and we expect high standards from all our venues. The standard never fell short and have indeed increased our focus on regular cleaning and checks.
• Atmosphere & Approachability: I am saddened to hear you felt the environment became less welcoming or that I seemed less approachable. Please know that every student’s growth and wellbeing remain at the heart of our club. I welcome open feedback and am always available to discuss any concerns directly.
• Karate Values: We fully agree that karate is about personal development, humility, and enjoying the journey, not simply about chasing belts. We work hard to instil these values in every class.
• Legal Responsibilities: We take our duty of care very seriously and regularly remind all students of their responsibility to use their skills appropriately and safely, both inside and outside the dojo.
• Club Closures & Insurance: The club closes over Christmas only, (so remains open 50 weeks of the year). This Christmas closure is to allow both students and instructors valuable family time, as is common with many activities. The annual insurance/licence renewal is a requirement set by our governing body to ensure all students are properly insured.
We’re truly pleased to hear your children enjoyed the support of our assistant instructors and found lasting friendships within the club, that sense of community is something we’re very proud of.

Fantastic experience: My daughters have been attending martial arts classes here for well over 2 years now and they love it! I have seen their confidence and self esteem grow outside of lessons too, with better concentration at school and achieving higher academic grades. Sensei Steve is masterful at keeping lessons fun whilst ensuring the children reach their full potential. We are attending the Ellesmere Port karate class but when my daughters have missed a session, we are always welcome at the Chester Karate classes too. The team at SnwKarate are always welcoming, encouraging and helpful with many black belt team leaders in every class. We as parents can see the standards are kept very high but allowing all to progress at their own pace. I highly recommend Snwkarate classes to all parents wishing for their children to be happy and confident.

Fantastic experience: My daughter, Sophie started training at SNW in 2011 when she was six. She had low confidence and was quite shy. She is now a 2nd Dan black belt and assists sensei Steve teaching once a week. She’s now confident in everything she does and not so shy anymore! I can honestly say that karate has changed her life and moulded her into a strong, confident woman who can seriously look after herself! I couldn’t recommend SNW karate enough. It really helped Sophie gain confidence, fitness and mental toughness. The team are more like a family and really look out for each other, they have made such a difference in her life.

As a Karate Instructor who understands that Karate is so much more than just punching and kicking its great to see so many positive outcomes develop through her training, her self esteem, her confidence and not least her happiness. Keep up your hard work and dedication.
Negative experience: My son attended for a couple of years. He started of enjoying it receiving some positive feedback along the way. The sensai doesn’t have a natural ability with children but tries hard with some children. However he becomes easily frustrated with others and tends to single out children. Other parents also found this to be true. After a time my son was singled out completely knocking his confidence. On a personal level I found the sensai to be rude and short tempered when I raised concerns. I was also lied to about a lack of escalation procedure. Having looked into this further you can escalate via the English Karate Foundation. I’ve provided a 2 star rating which is very fair as my son did enjoy it for a time but it ended very poorly, my son lost confidence as a result of this karate club.
I’m sorry to hear that you feel you have had a negative experience. We have been working hard to improve our service and delivery of our classes in a positive way.

Fantastic experience: My daughter has been training under Sensei Steve at SnwKarate for 2 years now and I could not recommend it enough. Sensei Steve is brilliant and my daughter thinks the world of him. We can see a massive improvement in her confidence and fitness, and she is doing really well, which is making us extremely proud as parents, but also it will give her a good foundation for her future.

Fantastic experience: My daughter and I both started karate at Sensei Steves Ellesmere Port class 18 months ago and we both look forward to his lessons each week. The classes are fun and friendly yet with the emphasis very much on learning and development. My daughters teacher said that he has noticed a vast improvement in her confidence and in her physical education. At present there are a good number of white belts and the club and everyone is made to feel very welcome

Negative experience: After 2 sessions we won’t be returning. Customer service fails to meet even basic levels of communication and we found Steve in person to be very rude and rather aggressive. Certainly not the positive role model we were hoping for for our son. Avoid at all costs!

Fantastic experience: As activity instructor for children i appreciate the time energy and dedication it takes also sensei Bolland's facilitation and adaption to ages an individual's and as a whole group is very impressive. Me and my two nephews Tyler and Lucas are happy we joined.

Fantastic experience: I have been a student for 6 months now. I have a neurological disorder and sensei has helped me immensely with my strength and balance. At 34 I was nervous about joining the Dojo but I need not have worried. Sensei made me feel extremely welcome and spent time with me and now I am addicted. Thank you for everything sensei.

Fantastic experience: My son has been attending this dojo with Sensei Bolland for a few years now and I can highly recommend it. My sons confidence and fitness levels have increased. He's made lots of friends and he's learning a new skill.

Fantastic experience: My daughter started at Shushinkai North West in Jan 2011, the facilities and quality of teaching are excellent, after only a few lessons we could see the increase in her overall confidence, and this has grown belt after belt. There are some fantastic learnings through the study of Karate and its etiquette that can be applied to all parts of life. She has made some great friends and there is a very welcoming community sprit, so much so just before my 40th birthday in Jan 2013 I started training. Highly Recommended!!!!
