Information about The Gilson Hotel
Our comment from FitFit UK about The Gilson Hotel:
The Gilson Hotel, located in the heart of Hull, offers a budget-friendly option for travelers looking for convenience and accessibility. Here are some key points based on customer reviews:
- Location: The hotel is ideally situated just a short walk from the train station and the vibrant city center, making it easy for guests to explore local attractions, bars, and restaurants.
- Value for Money: Many guests find the pricing reasonable for the amenities offered, making it a suitable choice for short stays or budget travelers.
- Cleanliness: While experiences vary, several reviews mentioned clean rooms and good housekeeping, although there are reports of rooms needing attention and maintenance.
- Staff: The hotel staff received good feedback for being friendly and helpful, going above and beyond to assist guests with any issues.
- Room Amenities: Some rooms feature additional amenities like jacuzzis and spacious layouts, adding extra comfort for guests.
However, there are some consistent concerns voiced by guests:
- Many rooms are described as outdated, with a need for refurbishment and improved maintenance.
- No parking is available directly at the hotel, requiring guests to find alternative parking nearby.
- Noise from the street and neighboring bars can be disruptive, particularly in certain rooms.
- Some guests experienced cleanliness issues and uncomfortable bedding, which detracted from their overall experience.
In summary, The Gilson Hotel is a budget-conscious choice in a prime location, offering excellent service from its staff. While there are areas needing improvement, it can cater to those seeking a clean place to stay without breaking the bank.

The Gilson Hotel: Opinions
Fantastic experience: You’re so bad hotel
Negative experience: Cons- *Multiple blood stains on our shower curtain *Bath was crack in multiple places and mould around the bathtub *Toilet didn't have the best flushing *Bed rather uncomfortable and stiff *No parking at the hotel had to park over the road and paid £8.50 for 24-hour parking * Right next to the main road, so we couldn't have the windows open during the night Pros - *The lobby and staff were very welcoming. *They have a vending machine but not very well stocked up *Tea and coffee amenities (but kettle covered in limescale) *Very close to the train station Overall, it was a good enough stay, I only gave it two stars as staff were very nice but the blood stained shower curtains have put me off so I would not stay again even for a night.
Positive experience: Cheap and cheerful, we will use again for our annual uni lads trip.
Negative experience: Clean and staff were lovely... wasn't expensive so I suppose you should not expect too much. The room was far too warm for my taste. The shower pressure was poor but it was hot .The location was excellent for my needs... I'm not sure I would stay here again.
Fantastic experience: I must say my stay at the Gilson hotel was brilliant. My room was just what unneeded and the reception staff were first class. Right on the doorstep of town and right next to the station. Had a blast and would DEFINITELY stay there again.
Negative experience: Old and poorly maintained hotel, no breakfast available, rooms are old and poorly maintained.
Positive experience: Pleasantly surprised with the room, wasn't expecting much but got a room with a seating area and a separate bedroom both with large tvs in. Also a corner jacuzzi bath (don't know if it worked as didn't try it). We did have an issue with the room as the door card entry was constantly beeping and had to be changed, the girl on the reception strangely offered us a full refund if we wanted to check out and find somewhere else to stay before they had even tried to fix the problem. We went out and by time we returned the issue had been resolved. Value for money and great location.
Negative experience: Although in a fantastic part of the city and near the old town, it needs some serious updating. That been said, the bedding and towels were clean. We only stayed one night but won't be returning.
Positive experience: Stayed here for 1 night during the week for work. It's nothing special, but it's clean and reasonably priced for the centre. Bars and restaurants on the doorstep and 10 second walk from the train station. There's street parking available after 6pm too. My only gripe would be the plastic mattress covering. It made it a really hot and uncomfortable night. I wouldn't stay again for that reason.
Positive experience: Only stayed for one night and was satisfied with the room and services provided, close to railway station and city centre shops
Negative experience: It’s hard to say it’s worth staying here. During the summer - don’t do it. It’s too hot . There was bugs in my bed. The bathroom tub looked like someone peeled it back. However, the best hot shower I’ve had in a long time. Everything is standard, But no fridge, wifi is trash (gotta pay £2 extra for premium) and top it all off - their sign says bed and breakfast, they don’t do B&B. I will not be returning.
Positive experience: Had to book in for the night at a day's notice. Superb clean rooms and friendly chatty staff - only downside being they currently don't do food.
Fantastic experience: I have spent a few nights in here, honestly the room is good for the price they offer, Staff are nice and friendly.
Negative experience: Soo I've stayed here a few times before and I've never ever in my time been in such a bad room with them Firstly the flooring was coming up court my foot a couple of times on it Secondly the room had mould patches in it Thirdly the bath panel was broke and coming away The shower curtain was mouldy There was a very bad smell in the bathroom which you could smell as soon as u opened the door The hair dryer in the room stunk of burning then turned off on us
Fantastic experience: Going by other peoples reviews then i think they should adjust their expectations. Ive stayed a 3 times now and had no problem. Nice clean room with a fan and extra electric heater supplied. Powerful hot shower and friendly staff. This is not the hilton so dont expect it when its a 3rd of the cost.
Negative experience: My mum stayed for 3 hours tv kept turning off and she got scratched on her hand she felt as if she was being watched in the room very haunted covered in mirrors she returned home 3 hours later saying its haunted and to never book her this hotel again she was in room 234
Positive experience: It was okay. It was really weird to be honest. Very old fashioned, joked to my partner that it used to be a prozzie parlor and the way it looks he actually believed me. Can hear neighbours. Despite being at the top of the building I could hear all street noise. Bathroom has chipped tiles. Incomplete work and also the bathroom radiator had open live wires on show. Bath was dirty. And after reading previous reviews while laying in bed, seeing others had bed bugs... Made us very paranoid. Won't be back. It was too weird.
Negative experience: Beds are so hard, feels like you're sleeping on the floor, pillows are so flat you need at least 3 and they give you one each. Bath had cracks in it and overall it was not the cleanliness you'd expect. I would definitely pay a little extra for a hotel that actually has a decent bed. NOT wheelchair accessible at all. Staff at reception were lovely though, cant fault them
Negative experience: Kettle blew up, wasn't wheelchair accessible, toilet didn't flush and phones do not work. Rather pay the difference for a chain hotel. The receptionist was nice though
Positive experience: Basic rooms, very outdated but suitable for one night stay for a quick visit. Wouldn't stay any longer.
Negative experience: Pillows flat like a bloody pancake. Huge dip on myside of the bed hardly any sleep
Fantastic experience: Couldn't beat it.will use it again when in Hull.lovely clean rooms, clean hotel and if you want a drink use sports bar next door very cheap drinks.
Positive experience: Central location convenient for transport, places to eat, drink and shop. Also walking distance from the football club
Fantastic experience: Stayed there on 27/10/22 in a very large twin room the room and the bathroom was spotlessly clean and warm, the beds was clean and very comfortable and the man on reception was friendly and helpful I was very impressed and definitely stay there and would recommend this hotel
Positive experience: If you want cheap and not so cheerful then this is the one! Short walk to shops and quay. The rooms were clean enough but flaky paint, stained walls etc. For 90 quid 2 adults and 2 teenage kids a night. It was a bed!!
Positive experience: Worthy for the money you pay. A great location at the city centre. Because of the busy street it would be noisy mostly.
Negative experience: Currently staying at the Gilson Hotel. Do NOT believe the web site. Gym is extra purchase. Breakfast is not included as the kitchen is closed for refurbishment. (Email sent on day of arrival). Triple room, with minimal facilities to accommodate. Walls look like they've done time in Bazrah. Ceiling looks like the bath from upstairs is about to fall in on us. Phones don't work. Handles for the toilet have to be negotiated with to work. Disgraceful.
Positive experience: Great location This was probably a great hotel in the 80s , now requiring a complete overhaul. Very outdated
Negative experience: The only good thing about this place was the location , personally I'd stay away and will never be going again The room was okay but that's about as far as it went , the lounge/bar existed but was never open , breakfast only served from 11am onwards and came home with bites on my legs, the bed creeked every time you made 1 simple movement Honestly I'd stay away
Negative experience: Opened a draw to find empty beer bottles, photo sent to management but no response though draw was cleaned. Thick layer of dust on top of wardrobe. Shower curtain needed replacing had mild spots andbrown staining on the bottom.tea/coffee not replenished and no spoon or stir stick
Fantastic experience: Stayed here last October for Hull Fair, perfect location and very nice and spacious rooms. Visiting again this year also for Hull Fair.
Negative experience: Would never recommend this hotel to anyone. After spending one night there for £130 we expected a clean room with a quiet night and good sleep, how wrong was we! The room smelt funny, the kettle was dirty the bathroom was really unclean,we didn’t have a wink of sleep with all the noise and police sirens,we woke for my partner to be covered in bites(bed bugs) We went down for breakfast every table was dirty we sat there and saw all the flies on the little muffins..got up and left without and checked out. We ad to pay for parking at the train station and we ad 2 single beds pushed together that gave me backache with laying down on the crack of the bed most of night because the sheet that was also full of black dots didn’t cover the 2 singles that was pushed together!! Avoid at all costs..
Positive experience: Good gym and good size rooms. No food in the evening available and breakfast was also not served when I stayed although they usually do provide this. Reception staff were helpful and a good location.
Negative experience: The photos on the site are not a true representation. Despite advertising “food served daily”, there was not. They also advertise a bar upstairs for sky tv etc, wasn’t open! No a/c and no extractor fan in the bathroom. They also advertise free parking but there is not, we had to pay to park in the train station. The room, on the surface looked clean but unloved and in need of some work. The bathroom tiles were covered in scum and the lift was grimy. Not a nice place. I would def return to Hull but will be booking premier inn next time.
Positive experience: Lift was broken Had to help my 85 year old mother walk up to 3rd floor. Other guests were very loud. Shower room needed a bit of detailed cleaning. Mould potential.
Negative experience: *AVOID AT ALL COSTS* Came down to hull for one night and ended up coming back with bed bug bites!! One of our party had to go to hospital to get an adrenaline shot her bites were so bad!! The one star I gave was for leaving this place!! Would never EVER stay here again!!
Positive experience: Very Old hotel. Lifts not working. Rooms are subpar .
Positive experience: Staff great and room was spotless but incredibly hot in the room with the front windows not letting enough air in but an incredible amount of noise throughout the night (back rooms much better apparently). A chuffing plastic covered mattress making it a sweaty experience on top of the hotel allowing a room full of extremely roundy drunk lads next door meant no sleep whatsoever. Don't think I'll be returning here but if you do book ask for a room away from the road.
Positive experience: Pleasant welcome, spacious and clean rooms. A great Sports Bar if that's your thing. Ideally located being a 2 minute walk from both the railway station and Hull Old Town and it's many wonderful pubs.
Positive experience: Room was basic but clean. We visited with my mother in law, who is not good with stairs, and we picked this hotel as it advertised a lift. Though it does have a lift to the rooms you had to go up 10 or so stairs to get to reception and the lift. There are a further 10 or so stairs to get to the breakfast area. When we were there, the bar was closed, so you couldn't sit with a drink and watch Sky sports as advertised. Finally, there is no parking. You can't even drop bags off at the door and park after check in. You have to use the car park at the train station round the corner. Despite this, it is an OK hotel.
Negative experience: First of the staff are lovely, very helpful and welcoming, unfortunately thats as good as it gets, the air conditioning was stuck at 31°c so the room was uncomfortable hot, the toilet was broken, the bed was broken and dipped either side, the bar was never open, from other reviews, this is down to lack of staff, the TV kept turning on at random times, waking us up in the middle of the night on multiple occasions, there is also now no parking as it is used for tables, and this is not down to the hotel but the residents at the pub down stairs where just disgusting, you couldn't wake past without being harassed!
Positive experience: Staff were pleasant. Bed was incredibly uncomfortable. I had hardly any sleep. The room had a connection door which was locked, however I could hear everything that was going on in next room including talking, rustling bags and at 2.30am someone taking a really long wee. Location is great, but my room was not
Positive experience: Good Hotel , value for money. Best location near to Train Station + Bus Station + Malls + shopping + Tourist Spot. Vegeterian Breakfast no choice as usual. Note - Egg is part of veg food in UK. So be specific while you order.
Fantastic experience: Great little over-nighter for a gig at Bonus Area. Very close to Arena and train station. Pubs nearby. Parking close (at St Stephen's shopping centre). Not the best area, but that doesn't matter at all, it is a good location for gigs at the Arena. Easy check in. Pleasant staff. BIG room and big, comfortable bed. Excellent soundproofing. Tea, coffee and kettle in the room. Great experience.
Negative experience: Receptionist was nice. Rooms extremely tatty. Not in the best part of town - there was a fight going on outside when we checked in late afternoon. After half an hour left the place and found another hotel. If you are planning on getting very drunk and just want somewhere to crash in the city centre, this place would be just about tolerable. Otherwise, I would not bother.
Negative experience: Overall it was a great stay staff was polite room was really good only issue I had was the hotel advertised parking at the hotel but when I got there was told there was no parking there so had to go and park in a multi-storey carpark that was £3 for 24 hours so ended up paying £6 for it which I shouldn’t have had to do
Fantastic experience: The receptionist Savannah was very lovely and polite, our room was amazing and so big, the bed was extremely comfortable with nice clean sheets. While here I took full advantage of the jacuzzi bath which again was amazing, the bathroom was lovely and clean with nice clean towels. I couldn't of asked for a better room, you are right in the town close to everything you need - bonus arena, train station, pubs and bars and plenty of places to eat. Would most definitely stay here again.
Negative experience: Not the best. A bit tired. Staff seemed lovely but the hotel is a bit dated . Rooms need a good clean . They are cleaned and fresh towels supplied but not cleaned to a high standard. Didn't eat in the hotel as the cleanliness of the room put me off .
Fantastic experience: It's clean but very dated, always stay here when come to hull.. Bring our friends to stay also , But this time had to pay a £50 deposit which isn't a problem , but was told had to wait 10-14 days to be put back in the bank, which I found very strange, considering the payment when straight out of our bank on first night .. so dont no how the refund would work considering they didn't store our details to refund it... Loved staying at hotel as staff and owners very friendly.. But unfortunately this was our last stay after years of staying there , as not paying 50 to have to wait 2 wks to get deposits back so won't be booking 11 rooms in Aug for my husbands 60th
Positive experience: The hotel feels European on entry with wide staircases. It's clean. Rooms are fine, they served our purpose of a bed for the night when attending the Arena, super close to the station. All good.
Negative experience: When we arrived and was given our room. The bathroom was full of mould and not the room which was advertised on the website. After complaining, the receptionist did upgrade our room. There was no cereals, yogurts etc for breakfast, only full English every day, the tables were dirty every morning. The coffee machine was broken and could only access hot water. The staff however, was very pleasant.
Positive experience: Stayed in room 220 for 6 nights. The hotel provided a fan, which was great, but the finishings weren't up to standard. Also you couldn't get just cold water from the tap in the bath, as the tap looked jammed. The signal on the TV wasn't that great, the clothing closet has seen better days and there's only 1 night stand because of the lack of space in the room. The great thing though was that you actually could open the windows for about 5-10 centimetres. The room also benefitted from black out curtains and the bath was lovely long and wide. I loved the front street view. But if you're a light sleeper, you can benefit from ear plugs; don't forget to bring them with you! The staff was very nice, helpful and polite. The only thing the staff didn't mentioned when we checked in, was that you need to go to the reception every morning to get breakfast vouchers for breakfast in the Humber Arena downstairs, if you booked with breakfast included. You also should check the website from the Humber Arena for the breakfast options, as the staff automatically assumes that you want a Full English Breakfast. They also have variations like poached eggs, scrambled eggs and vegetarian breakfast The owner owns the Gildon Hotel ánd the Humber Arena and stays at the 2nd floor. He's grumpy and doesn't give a sh*t about his absolutely brilliant staff There's no parking at the hotel, but there's a huge covered car park 5 minutes walk away, that charges £3 for 24 hours ór £12.50 for a week through the website. I would defo recommend this hotel because of it's great, central, easy reachable location and friendly staff.
Negative experience: Well where do I start I was told the hotel was disabled friendly to get treated with ten steps we had to get someone to lift my mobility scooter up at this point it was dark and wet outside had it not been I would of got a refund and gone elsewhere got up to our rooms (family and twin ) family room first we had the furniture was wobbly and no doors in wardrobe dirty marks on walls etc hairs in bed and marks on sheet which the receptionist changed as housekeeping wasn’t available twin room one bed had what can only be described as skid marks on sheets no more words on that subject required the phone to contact reception didn’t work do we had to use our mobile and on hold for 50 mins once again the receptionist rectified we had to move the desk as the wire for the kettle didn’t reach the plug the bathroom had lots of rust and bad workmanship next morning we had to go next door into the sport’s bathroom for breakfast as we couldn’t access their stairs to get to their bar we were also told that they had a restaurant when booking which they didn’t and given the stairs situation I couldn’t go for the family meal we had planned so had take away pizza instead this break with my girls was a Xmas gift including a show at Hull theatre has been ruined by such a bad hotel experience avoid at all cost I do have photos to back up my statements as well
Negative experience: Bogeys on the wall. We found hairs and Blood stains in our bed and we have paid £250 for the room for 1 night. We was expected to change our own beds, the bath worked but was very unclean. Egg stains on the windows. The lights on the wall didn’t have pull cords. The lady did clean our beds but we cleaned the walls ourselves.there’s a hand print on the wall that will not wipe off. The wardrobe had no doors the kettle was unclean. And the other thing was it stunk of cannabis (I know this isn’t the hotels fault but was very off putting)
Fantastic experience: Been Twice Now Last November n Poped Bk As 11th February An again Staff n The Service are Very Friendly Lanlord n Lanlady An Joe Makes u Very Welcome To the Hotel n Yes will be Poping Back Again at Some Stage This Year
Positive experience: The saying you get what you pay for is true here, we got a family room and the room is to a good standard, its not purfect but staff seem nice and I cant complain pretty comfy
Fantastic experience: The location for this hotel is just fabulous Near all the shops and bars restaurants The staff are really helpful Large rooms which are very clean Safe covid environment And great value too
Positive experience: It is what it is, £51 basic head down one night only for wife and our mates stayed in next room for Human League gig.
Fantastic experience: Room clean and spacious.Very quiet at the back.Plenty of coffee and tea and the man at the desk(Wayne) couldn't do enough for us.This place is great value and we love staying in it.We didn't have the breakfast in it this time but I certainly recommend it.
Fantastic experience: Clean excellent value, staff polite and friendly first time visiting for a brief visit, look forward to staying again in the future and our stay will be longer
Negative experience: Payed an extra £80 I think it was to upgrade to the junior suite for 1 night. Yeah, there was lots more room, but the jacuzzi bath was still only for 1 person as the taps were at one end, would have been better if they were in the middle. Also in the bathroom was a cracked tile, which at some point someone could slice their foot open, especially a child. The breakfast was pretty poor, I would have liked a buffet style, especially cereals, but nothing like that was available, just a fried brekkie, which I'm not keen on at 9 am. The bed was nice and clean and comfortable and the room was lovely and warm and heated up quite quickly. There is no parking but we managed to squeeze in the train station car park which is very close and it was reasonably priced. It is in the city centre, which is very handy. Would I stay here again, no.
Negative experience: We stayed here last week for 5 days; our 3rd visit and unfortunately the last. The limited car parking no longer exists as it has been taken over by picnic tables for the sports bar so had to pay extra at the railway station car park.the Hotel has a beautiful upstairs bar and restaurant but have decided not to use it and instead want you to eat in the FREEZING sports bar. It used to be self service breakfast with fruit ,cereal, continental or full English now its very limited to fry up or something on toast.they didn't even have any white bread. The staff are all friendly n helpful but the rooms are all a bit tired and in need of tlc, and unfortunately it now attracts stag ,hens and groups. We ended up next door to a group who thinks it's acceptable to blast music out at midnight and be as loud as possible when they came in at around 3 am.
Negative experience: Zero stars. Myself and my fiancé had the misfortune to stay here. It was utter hell. Our room was despicably dirty, full of webs, dilapidated bathroom, shockingly bad. Our bed bowed in the middle. We even found black mould on the bed sheets and had to change them ourselves. We would have stayed elsewhere had it not been so late at night. We even contemplated sleeping in our car. This place should be closed down pending major refurbishment. How could this place claim to be fit to have humans reside in it? It is a health hazzard and more fitting to a homeless refuge than hotel. In fact the term 'hotel' is laughable. AVOID at all costs.
Positive experience: Came for the Bring Me The Horizon gig. The hotel was excellent value for money. The location to the Bonus Arena was perfect. The room was really clean and comfortable and the veggie breakfast at the Sports Bar was really great. I am so happy to leave such a good review but I hope it doesn't mean that you put the prices up! :)
Negative experience: Very poor hotel. Was booked in for the night by work. So glad it is only 1 night. Looks like they have spent quite abit of money on the public area's. Wish the same could be said about the rooms. Looks ok on the surface, but get I to the room and look closer. The fit and finish leaves alot to be desired. The uncomfortable bed creaks like mad when you move. Loads of fly's in the light fitting. Silicone around the bath is a joke. Then there the shower that has zero hot water. Not what you want when finishing a days work. Hotel is situated on a main busy crossroad, so very noisy all night. Would definitely not stop here again!
Positive experience: The room was basic but clean with nice thick towels. We'll placed for walking around the city. Not the hotels fault but noisy inconsiderate guests around us who constantly banged doors from about 5am. The breakfast in the sports bar was awful. Don't bother.
Negative experience: Chose this hotel in particular as it’s location was convenient for nearby shops/attractions. Me and my partner came here for our on year anniversary with plans to go to the Deep and just look about Hull together. Checked in and got our room. It was very clean but not the most appealing room in the world. We noticed the walls were very hollow as we could hear the guests next door having a very loud conversation at 1am in the morning. This went on for a good hour and I couldn’t sleep due to the racket so I went to go find a member of staff. I found someone who was very friendly and happy to help and came with me to have me show him where the noise was coming from. He sorted it out and didn’t hear a peep from them that point onwards. Our last night was hell however. There were around 20 people squished into I think 2 or 3 hotel rooms in the section above our room. It was some “lads having a stag due”. It sounded like they were tipping furniture upside down continuously for hours and hours on end. They were shouting, screaming, running and jumping up and down (obviously very drunk). Made a complaint obviously and the hotel staff were already very aware of the situation and told me and my partner about the 20 boys being upstairs right above our room. They had been up to the room to tell them to cut down the noise, but they didn’t stop after being told to. They didn’t die down until around 7:30am. Me and my partner were exhausted and massively agitated by this. The audacity of some people. However we had paid for breakfast throughout our stay and it was lovely. Other than the noise it wasn’t terrible, not planning on staying here again however.
Positive experience: good location, has a bar. Fairly basic and a bit dated.
Positive experience: Nice and clean quite nicely done room decent windows too help keep thd noise of traffic out as on busy main rd
Negative experience: Not even sure where to start here. Definitely one of the worst places I've stayed. The 'limited parking' is so limited that it in fact doesn't exist, we had to park in a nearby multi story. The room was so hot and no AC, just a beaten up old fan that was extremely noisy. The windows had to stay open as the room was so hot, which lead to a lot of noise coming from the road below. The mattress on the bed was about 3 cm thick and felt like sleeping on cardboard. The whole room felt like it hadn't been updated in years. The toilet facilities were strange, the cold tap constantly spat out hot water and the roof looked like it was about to collapse in. Glad we only stayed for one night, and even then we tried other hotels for availability. Also, check out the high tech plasma TV.
Fantastic experience: I went to their bar. Nice pub with outside seating on the main road leading up to the train station. Although, its quite central but there is a cosy local pub feel to it. It's a good introduction to Hull
Positive experience: It's location was perfect although there is no parking outside the hotel the train station car park is about 200 yards away and costs £5 for 24 hours. For a budget hotel you couldn't go wrong, the staff were helpful and friendly, it was clean and tidy. Our room was on the 3rd floor with plenty of room and an ample bathroom which had a shower and toilet. The bed was comfertable. The only minor spoiler was that the Hospital was just down the road so we had plenty of ambulances going past but as our room was on the front and at the other end so they didn't really bother us but you are in the centre of a city. Otherwise I would recommend staying here, we didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on the food.
Positive experience: Friendly staff. Room ok for what needed. Nothing fancy. But hate not having carpet on the floors. Cheap and cheerful.
Negative experience: Booked for 2 nights but only stayed for one. Lost money as I couldn't have a refund but didn't want it. The room was awful! I have stayed in many hotels, most of which are cheaper than this one and we're cool and quiet. The Gilson had a ridiculously hot room, me and my son hardly slept at all. There is a standard fan in the room that did nothing to cool us down. Opening the window the 2 inches that are allowed is pointless, you won't get a breeze in but you will get the unbelievable traffic/police sirens/night club/ambulances noise all night long! There is no parking at the hotel as they now use their available spaces for tables outside the pub below. I won't stop here again even if it was free.
Negative experience: The incomplete hospitality tray was about as hospitable as it got. On arrival the aforementioned free parking was not available, we had to seek out alternative parking which was quite pricey. The welcome was basic, after she had finished her cigarette break which she rapidly returned to. The room; even more basic and SO hot! We had 2 fans on the go, one with a bit of a death rattle, the windows were open to the max, a teeny gap so you can't jump; probably for the best at this point! It was SO noisy outside, the club/all night bar below had music and loud customers, the road and drivers were LOUD and the endless sirens were far from restful. The bedding and towels were clean (thank goodness), however there was no mattress protector on a pretty poor standard mattress. The rest of the room was pretty tires and worn, the gospitality tray had only one cup for the 2 of us, no glasses and no teaspoons so we had to go and seek those out for ourselves. The bathroom was okay, bath, shower, toilet and sink all fairly clean although the shower curtain was disgusting and had definitely never been cleaned, only 3/4s of a toilet roll had been left and the quality was poor. We were told the restaurant was closed and that breakfast would be served in the club/bar next door... we looked... but we didn't stay. Overall it was pretty disappointing for a night away, I'm afraid to say we won't be returning.
Negative experience: The room was functional and clean; to be honest this is the most important thing when staying in a hotel. The reception staff were courteous and helpful. The breakfast was served in the "sports bar" in the basement. We ate surrounded by the previous night's detritus and smells, served by staff who clearly felt they were being put out. The food was ok (English breakfasts all round) ; edible but not anything to look forward to. Overall, the hotel looks quite tired but served its purpose as a place to sleep. I would not recommend staying here if you are looking for anything more than that.
Fantastic experience: Staff were extremely helpful and took our bags up to the room for us. The bed linen is lovely and soft. Fantastic bed and the towels are of very good quality they are large and very thick. The breakfast is also a decent size. This year the breakfast is held in the mezzanine part of the bar. On offer is the continental of wallfles, croissants, fruit basket, white/brown toast, yogurt, porridge, orange/apple fruit juice and different coffee's/hot chocolate. Then also cooked breakfast. You can get room service in the evening if you require it. However you have a variety of takeaways within a couple of mins walk. The hotel has two bars and is very well priced. So if you want value for money, in a central location. Then look no further. Staff are on the premises 24/7. If you need anything or have a problem they will try to bend over backwards to make sure they can help. If you have a problem with the room if they can't fix it due to it being a maintenance issue they will give you the option of another room. Once again this hotel and staff have stepped up to make sure our stay is a good one. Also very Military Veteran Friendly. They will also look after your luggage before check in or after check out to help. So would reiterate that this hotel is definitely worth the money and you will be well looked after. Thank you so much for looking after us again. We will be back next year. Hopefully for two seperate functions.
Positive experience: Room was tidy but very old furniture. Doesn't had bedside tables. Bar wasn't tidy outside but food was good.
Negative experience: I recently stayed at the Gilson Hotel. I can't believe they have 1 member of staff to run the reception, bar and generally be a dogs body. What happens if there is a fire or a fracas. I think its poorly run in my opinion
Positive experience: Good location, basic room, let down by the food, the evening meal served to our party could only be described as pathetic, hunters chicken would be better described as hunt for the chicken, shockingly small portions accompanied by 3 little potatoes and no other vegetables whatsoever! Bar service a bit hit and miss but it was busy due to England game on tv so mitigating circumstances there. Breakfast the next morning could have been ok had the breakfast chef turned up for work but England had beaten Denmark the night before so one can only assume the cause of illness. Staff did their best under the circumstances but... not what was expected from a city centre hotel to be honest even on a budget.
Positive experience: Decent room with a view air con was fantastic but shower was awful
Positive experience: Stayed in a family room. It was comfortable , clean and a great size. All the basics were there. Reception staff were not the most helpful. When we asked where and when breakfast was the staff member seemed unsure of their answer, then failed to offer us directions to the breakfast room or to our hotel room until prompted. This isn't something I would typically complain about but it felt more like poor manners and attitude than human error. Breakfast was held in a sports bar situated next to the hotel building, which was also open to the public and we found ourselves in the company of some locals who were enjoying a refreshing Sunday morning pint. The table we were sat at appeared to be scattered with crumbs. Again, not something I would usually complain about (because my two children are usually creating the mess) but it was 10 am, It was very quiet and we are in the middle of a pandemic. Having said that, the breakfast was nice and they were able to cater for my partner and children's coeliac diet. I would stay at the hotel again but I would go elsewhere for breakfast.
Positive experience: Didn't stay there. Had a drink in bar below the hotel. Looks OK from outside
Negative experience: Wot a s..t hole Beds are appalling In a bad location with no parking Noisy and dirty
Fantastic experience: I travelled with my daughter under exceptional circumstances and after being let down by the majority of the hotel in the area, Gilson Hotel accepted to help us because they understood the the situation. I can only be grateful for this. The hotel and the room were confortable and clean. I have no complaints at all. I highly recommend this Hotel. Stefania
Positive experience: The noise of the traffic was deafening from 5 o'clock in the morning and this was during lock down. Beds were comfy and the room was spotless.
Positive experience: Basic, clean rooms, friendly staff, good price.
Fantastic experience: The staff was great and joe was a great helped he did a few things for me and my partner and the staff are good in there there are Good at there jobs and me and my partner would like to stay here again
Negative experience: I had thought about 3*...but the lads ordering as mcdonalds at 2am just knocked it back a little. Where to start. we had booked a standard room at around 40 pounds. We arrived into what seemed like a lovely little place, marble flooring's etc. Got pretty good service at reception, and checked in rather quick. Great. Walk up the first flight of stairs to be greeted by a very overpowering stench of.. drains, or something. I tried to ignore it, as the smell passed after a quick walk down the hall. We arrive at our room and, well, i've never seen such a gloomy depressed room in my life. The colour scheme and furniture could use some updating that is for sure. but all that aside it would do. the bedding seemed fresh and clean, also the toilet and sink in nice clean condition. It was only on further inspection of the room that we noticed that this room wasnt cleaned with much care at all. Right above the bed, at the side where your head lies, there was some..lets say...very suggestive hand markings on the wall, seemed someone had a good time the night before, and i don't blame them. However i dont fancy trying to sleep with greasy hand stains so close to my head. Also, to the side of that some brown liquid dripping down the wall...yum. The handles on the draws etc were sticky, and id have thought in the middle of a pandemic such as 'Rona, that handles, etc would be prioritized in the cleaning schedule. Also, the 'flat screen' did not work. So we have a cold, outdated, dirty, sticky room. My partner called reception to ask for a clean to be carried out, as it just was not good. They were very helpful, the staff seem lovely so that is good, and decided to upgrade up to a 'junior suit' for our troubles. This room would've cost an extra 40. Let me tell you all something. What you pay for in this hotel is what you get. Our updated room was gorgeous. Marble flooring, decorated modern walls, a headboard, and get this a Jacuzzi!? much much better, we were happy. Everything was pretty sweet, until 10pm when the lads next to us got in and were so loud, and the walls are thin. We wasnt too fussed as were young, and we stay up anyway, but at 2am we were awoken by loud bangs, and a very excited phone call for a double cheeseburger and chips. Thats why this hotel gets a 2/5 from me. Remember you get what you pay for :)
Positive experience: Paid £44 for a double room. We weren’t expecting amazing things due to the reviews. When we arrived we found our room to have fresh handprints and stains above the bed. The TV remote was grimy and we couldn’t turn the TV on. Due to the dirt we felt uncomfortable staying there and ended up calling reception to ask for it to be cleaned. The woman on phone was really helpful and understanding, and within 10 minutes she came to our room to explain that she had upgraded us to a junior suite with no extra charge. When we got to the junior suite it was a whole different story. Everything was spotless, the general design of the room was really well put together, and it even came with a jacuzzi. The price for this type of room would have been £80 which I think is good for what you’d get. The only problem we had was the thin walls. We had a room next to a group of boys that were arguing and playing music. We woke up at 2am to them ordering takeaway, and could even hear the person on the other end of the call. This is down to the guests though, and not the hotel itself. We did hear the night staff come up to ask them to quieten down. I would come again, but would only book junior suites in the future. The difference in standards between the double room and the junior suite is very big in my experience, but the junior suite is worth the price
Positive experience: Hi I stayed recently and the room was ok for the price and water was nice and hot . Mathew (sorry if spelt wrong)on the desk was very helpful and made us feel welcome . I will definitely return and recommend to everybody xxxxxx Jodie
Positive experience: Great hotel clean great location staff friendly only bed let it down could do with replacing value of money would stay again Kev
Negative experience: It was incredibly noisy with people shouting all night. The walls are incredibly thin so we couldn't sleep. Would not recommend staying here. Other hotels very near to this location are far better than this one.
Fantastic experience: Really nice room. Friendly and helpful staff
Fantastic experience: Young man called matthew on reception again was helpful and carried my wife’s bags up the stairs . This is the second time we have stayed and feel very at home! Rooms clean and drinks are inexpensive like other hotels. Kind regards Graham
Negative experience: Friendly staff, but no social distancing in place or track & trace. Poor food, dirty rooms & uncomfortable beds.
Fantastic experience: Great offers on drinks with friendly and helpful staff. Food now on offer with social distancing tables and hand sanitisers available.
Negative experience: Dirty and old hotel. -The room was boiling hot, even with the fan on. -The bed was the worst I have ever slept on, like being on just the board! -Pillows were the same. -hotel room could have been a lot cleaner too. Will not be staying again.
Negative experience: I have stayed one night in February 17 in this hotel which I have booked and paid in advance in January 27. But they have charged me twice from my card on the day of stay again. The receptionist asked my card number and he said it wouldn't charge me, just to complete their formality. But actually it did. I am not happy with service.
Fantastic experience: Near to the station, clean and large rooms. A bit noisy as on a busy road.
