Fantastic experience: Recently joined the leisure facilities at Mottram Hall. Stunning location with great facilities. Yet to try the spa section. Has a luxury feel and a lovely atmosphere with friendly staff.

Negative experience: If i could rate this lower i would. Our stay was completely ruined by the pompous manager. Totes bags were not provided as advertised and when my friend (organiser) raised this with him the manager pur his hand up to her, told her to stop speaking and pointing at him (which she wasnt) and said he could do as he likes as it was his hotel. How rude!

Negative experience: Haven’t even got there yet , have tried to contact to add treatments to our spa stay and can’t get hold of anyone , no option to do so in web site , I need the spa day even more to calm down on the frustration they have caused

Positive experience: A nice afternoon however definite improvements could be made. The spot is lovely and you can tell that a lot of money has been spent in years past however it is indefinite need of an update. The reception staff were pleasant upon arrival. We then went to the changing rooms to get changed, which was an absolute disgrace. A lot of the lockers are broken. There are no instructions on how to use them. It turned into a bit of a comedy act of a bunch of ladies trying to figure out how to make things work. There was absolutely nowhere to get changed very very small for the amount Trying to get changed. Luckily, we were able to get a daybed, however it looked like it was quite difficult to secure a bed as the day went on. The spa facilities were okay. There was a definite pong from the inside pool of sewage. A little bit sulfer smelling. The three hot tubs were not hot, more like warm baths. The ceiling in the cold room was a bit of a mess and needed painting. I also felt that there could’ve been a little bit more service once in the spa if they could’ve had some waiters going around and asking for drinks I could definitely earn more money. We had two drinks which cost £26.50 quite astronomical. At the lunch the food was pleasant however they do not serve any hot drinks upstairs and did not have anything such as Coke zero either. We paid £5.50 for bread to go with our soup on top of the daily rate. When the bread came out, it was three pieces that looked like they were possibly the ends of somebody else’s leftover bread Cannot believe it was actually £5.50. When getting changed back into our normal clothes it was difficult as people had left robes and towels all over the place because there was nowhere to put them until you went out of the change rooms and there was bins there. Obviously People didn’t know this so things were all over the floor. As a Champneys high-end spa, I would expect a lot more than this. I would never pay for a price for the spa. However, if you can get a good discount, it’s worth it possibly. Didn’t do any of the spa services as we looked the day before and they looked completely sold out. However when we arrived they did tell us they were completely open for today probably completely open as the prices are very high and they are a very short period of time. A 20 minute massage example.

Fantastic experience: i visited today, 4/1/25 and had the most perfect experience for my 18th birthday. our room was upgraded to a beautiful suite and i was given a lovely champneys gift free of charge as well. i was also given a free glass of prosecco at dinner which was a great touch. overall the day was just beautiful and all of the staff were very thoughtful and considerate. i also had a back massage in the middle of my spa experience and the therapist, lee, was attentive and listened to exactly what i wanted and delivered wonderfully. thank you!!

Fantastic experience: This was our first time visiting, and we had a wonderful time at this beautiful spa! We opted for the spa day and had the most amazing time and will return. The photos don't do justice how tranquil the spa was. Staff were friendly and facilities were immaculate! Only downside was the dining experience, as despite it being advertised that lunch was included you had to pay £5.50 for sides (which were quite crucial to you feeling like you had a full meal), and a few of the dishes you had to pay extra for too. Overall a wonderful day and we had a great time, would definitely recommend.

Negative experience: Have been trying to book a spa day over the past week and the customer service are not very accommodating at all. Everything is a no, there is always a 20 minute wait to get through to someone and the delay in email response is far worse. There is simply no effort made in the slightest to try and accommodate. Would strongly encourage an improvement in booking policies especially when it is a voucher and this should be feasible to book online even with a voucher and an larger improvement in the interpersonal skills of the team over the phone.

Positive experience: Visited Mottram hall for afternoon tea that was bought as a birthday gift. From the start customer service was extremely poor it took 3 weeks for anyone to respond back to an email regarding a reservation. I tried to ring the provided number on numerous occasions hoping for a quicker response to no avail. Finally got a response within the 3 weeks to confirm a reservation. We arrived on the day on time. Waited for 15 mins to be seated as the tables weren’t ready or set. Was seated and served drinks and the afternoon tea 15 minutes later. The waiter who served us was lovely and did an amazing job. Unfortunately the general customer service from the start of booking the reservation didn’t set the right tone and continued by being made to wait to be seated. Felt disorganised. Good selection of cakes and sandwiches. Coffee and tea. Few sandwiches and cakes were quite dry. Setting was cosy with the Christmas tree and log fire. Overall I wouldn’t say the afternoon tea is worth the price it’s charged at.

Negative experience: Been a member for a few years, continue to stay on as it’s relatively local. It’s got its good bits but it’s deserving of a pretty average rating in general. Spa itself is fime and most of the staff are nice. The rest is average. Half the time something is broken and there’s rarely a rush to fix it. Laughably, even though things rarely work they are getting ruder and stricter with members over very little which is the last thing they should be doing. Poor management.

Lauren Blake 3 months ago

Negative experience: I’ve not even arrived yet. I booked 3 overnight spa stays here for January and spent multiple hours on hold for the past week trying to speak to a member of the team to arrange treatments. Starting to worry I’ve wasted my money if this is the standard of customer service I’m going to receive.

Negative experience: Went to Mottram Hall today to purchase two £100 gift vouchers offered with 30% added to each card, after taking my card payment I was told the offer finished yesterday despite a poster on the counter still showing the offer was still on and the vouchers only had £100 on each I then asked for a refund and was told it could take up to 5 working days When I got home looked on their website and saw gift vouchers for sale this time with 20% added The customer service is appalling

Fiona Bates 4 months ago

Negative experience: Almost impossible to book via the Reservations service. I only perserved because I had a gift voucher - and then foolishly bought a returns voucher. I had to drive down to Mottram Hall to make a booking, which they said at the spa they couldnt do but would email reservations and I'd be contacted..... and almost 2 weeks later ..... I'm still waiting. I only managed to book as I had the spa managers email from a previous visit, and in desperation I contacted her. The loungers round the pool are filthy and tatty, The spa towels are worse than my dog towels - much much worse. The changing room tatty, broken lockers, hair on the floor. No cups round the water fountains. The treatment I had on my first visit was very very good, but at £100 for a facial - it should be. The food was nice and the service in the spa restaurant very good. Sara the Spa manager was very helpful in booking our spa day, but the actual stress of booking the day, and continual disappointment are just not worth it... there are other places to go.

A K 4 months ago

Negative experience: Are you aware how poor your website is? Nothing works, million of pages, no consistency...I am writing a poor review even before coming. Before offering 20% extra on gift vouchers (which just wont add to the basket) I would suggest fixing the basics.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been training with Amine for the past few weeks and I’ve got to say he’s been incredible. I have an aim to transform and he has certainly set me on the path to greatness and finding my best self. Staff here are very pleasant, helpful and friendly. The treatments here are expensive but worth every penny as I always leave happy and refreshed.

Negative experience: Visited Mottram Hall twice, the service the first time was so bad that the second time was a free trip. Sorry to say nothing has changed. Lunch booked for 12:30 with treatment booked for 14:00 and we had to leave half way through lunch due to everything taking so long. Response we got from staff was they are under staffed and covering multiple roles! Which was the same excuse from last time. If you want a pleasant relaxing weekend go somewhere else.

Negative experience: An amazing facility but totally mismanaged. Sadly the management do what a core of members demand. Spin studio sadly lacking in bikes (though teaching staff great) A totally schizophrenic year of membership (sadly this was the 2nd time I’ve tried to be a member. ) Very disappointed ☹️

Negative experience: Disappointing stay for a Champneys hotel First of all , we received an email 2 nights before our stay to say our booking had been cancelled, which caused us stress and hassle. My boyfriend had to call up and sort the booking out, not a great first impression of Mottram hall. This trip away was for my boyfriends belated birthday celebrations. I emailed 48 hours prior and requested a bottle of wine to be sent to the room for our arrival, stating that I would pay at the desk once we checked in. I noticed that no one had replied to my email and when we arrived , the hotel had not fulfilled my request, or emailed me to say it wasn’t possible. I would’ve brought my own bottle if it wasn’t. The hotel bedroom was nice , but the bathroom is dated. Walls are paper thin, could hear everything from next door. Also got a wake up call at 9am from the hedge strimmers? The worst part of our stay was the fact we were told we could use the spa the morning after our stay, instead of when we first arrived, only to find that when we wanted to use the spa we were told that it was fully booked??? Surely you would’ve offered to book us in for the morning. Cannot believe we have travelled all the way from Hertfordshire to stay at this hotel and explore Cheshire, just to be turned away from the spa. Massively disappointed.

Positive experience: A nice experience, although there were some things that could have made it much better. The staff at the Spa reception desk were friendly and welcoming, and gave us our slip for lunch (this is very important to keep and take with you!). The spa area looked beautiful when we arrived early. Once we got into the changing rooms, it was chaos as there were no where to get changed. There’s 2 changing cubicles and 2x large pouffes in the middle. For the number of guests, there’s literally no room. We had to change on the floor in front of the lockers. As we were early, we managed to get a sun lounger. There’s 3 different pools, a jacuzzi, 2x saunas, steam room and cold room. The outdoor jacuzzi wasn’t working, so acted like a warm pool. Lunch was 2 course included in our overnight package, but the drinks were very expensive: 2x Peroni, glass of Prosecco, and Elderflower tonic was £26.40!!! The food was nice. Once we’d tried out the facilities, we felt ready to leave. It didn’t feel as relaxed as other spa purely the sheer number of people around. The Champneys shop was nice and they had a Happy hour between 2-3pm where items were discounted 20%. We liked the coffee shop and chilled out in front of the fire!!

Negative experience: AVOID. Quick to take your money yet cold rooms have never once worked, air con in gym hasn’t worked in months, sauna doors are broke (had been for months) countless complaints and they ignore everything. Currently FALSELY advertising services on their website that do not work and they fail to tell you any of this during the tour! Awful.

Positive experience: The spa experience is excellent. I’ve been quite a few time. From welcome to cleanness everything is great. There are variety of indoor pools and hot tubs to enjoy. Two saunas and a steam room which I really like. The cold room didn’t work this time I was there nor the ice bucket which was a shame. There are plenty of loungers inside and outside. Cafe is really nice specially with the fire in the middle. The only big disappointment was the restaurant. We had to ask for the menus to be bright to us! We had to wait for an hour for the food to arrive. They never asked us how we want the steak and it was actually very rare. My chicken salad didn’t have the chicken on the top!! We were sat in the last table close to the kitchen and the waitress behind us was sorting the cutlet out very very noisy. Despite me reminding her she didn’t stop so we had to ask to be seated at a different table. So next time we will grab a bite in the cafe instead.

Caroline Emerson-Bailey 9 months ago

Negative experience: There is literally Nowhere to get changed ! There are two small private rooms and an ottoman in the middle of the lockers. It was chaos. I didn’t bother having a shower because after I got my stuff out of the locker there was nowhere to put anything down. I used the window cill and floor and had to move because I was in someone’s way! There’s also nowhere to hang coats or jackets in the lockers. As there aren’t any pegs or coat hangers. The changing facilities are absolute joke ! Who signed off that design !!! It’s crazy. Massively lets the spa down and I think a lot of people would be put off returning as a result.

Positive experience: Really enjoyed our experience . . Except we didn't get our 3 course meal as advertised via our gift and , although the food was lovely, portion sizes were small and menu choice very limited. Staff not over friendly but polite . Lockers didn't lock and some were broken. Robes were provided , fresh and clean and also pairs of very uncomfortable flip flops! Drinks were ridiculously over priced as were the treatments on offer. We loved the pool areas and loungers. . Pretty noisy door banging though whenever you tried to relax. . Repair work took place to the building as we lounged about the pool with men visibly working on the upper part of the building outside. All said and done, we would return. . Hopefully things will have further improved by then.

Negative experience: Booked a spar day for my mum, the night before she was rushed to hospital for an emergency operation, called to let them know, tried to rebook several times, sent several emails all to be ignored. disgusting behaviour considering the circumstances

Negative experience: I was looking forward to the renowned Champneys Spa chain, but was very disappointed. We visited from a few hours for a special 30th birthday and it is easily one of the worst hotels I have stayed in. The rooms are very old and do not look like the photos, not worth the price at all. To add to this, you can hear every single thing from neighbouring rooms as if you are in the same room. We struggled to sleep and had the most awful sleep, a lot of this was also due to the fact that we had two extremely drunk girls running up and down the hallway at 2am squealing and shouting trying to find their room for about 45 minutes. Once they found their room, we could still hear them. We called reception to complain and they did nothing about it. The next morning we checked out and mentioned it, and they just said they will check this - nothing was done. The service here was terrible, the rooms outdated. The tables were filthy at breakfast and we had to wait for plates as they ran out. We then went to the spa - and although the complex was slightly better - the terrible service and facilities remained. The lockers and showers were not working. We then had our massage which was the only good bit, and went for lunch. Lunch took an hour to come and once it did come, it was the wrong order. We were in a rush to leave because we wanted to cut out spa day short, instead of staying until 6, we around 2.45pm. It was memorable but for the wrong reasons! I wanted to come to Champneys for years and my experience did not live up to the reviews. A lot needs to be improved for this to be considered part of the renowned ‘Champneys chain.’

Positive experience: Spa is quite big, and it is nice although the price reflects that. It also gets very busy so would reccomend choosing to go on a week day. We went on a Wednesday and arrived first thing by the time we went through there were no beds spare. Changing room is small for the amount of people using the spa. Food was average although we'd paid for a full day spa & 3 course meal, there were suppliment prices so this quickly crept up, between 3 of us we ended up spending an extra £40. Food was trying hard to be artisan but if they just kept it simple it would be alot better. Ordered what I thought would be an apple crumble and on photo is what arrived so would say the food menu is dissapointing. Good facilities otherwise but the treatments are unreasonably expensive. £110 for a facial seems a bit excessive. Has alot of saunas/steam rooms and different pools tho so although busy there's still options. Would only go again if it was on offer.

Negative experience: One of a party on a Spa Day. I am privileged enough to have travelled the world and experienced many Spa. This is by far the most filthy, over subscribed and overrated. Staff incredibly rude with zero customer service. The Duty Manager completely inept. A gifted, Pre-ordered Champagne failed to arrive and a satisfactory solution unable to offered. At 5pm others we spoke with other guests who were also disappointed to find that indoor jacuzzi system in available pools, no longer able to be switched on. Broken lockers, extremely and embarrassingly small changing facilities with broken lockers and used towels/gowns and slippers everywhere and over flowing bins. Myself and my party required nothing but an available seat, clean facilities, and basic polite customer service. I would not recommend this place at all. Never been anywhere so poor

Fantastic experience: I’m already looking forward to my next spa break. The staff were so welcoming and attentive. The facilities are great. Even though I did get a facial and 2 massages they were not what I actually wanted but I’m grateful for the products that therapists prescribed. My skincare routine desperately needed an overhaul which was long overdue. Make sure that you book your treatments well in advance.

Negative experience: Dear Spa at Mottram Hall, I hope this review finds you well. I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment regarding a recent incident I experienced at your gym. I believe it is essential to bring this matter to your attention for resolution and to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all members. During my visit this morning, I encountered what I perceived to be discriminatory behavior from a staff member, specifically the gym manager. I felt targeted based on my [race/ethnicity] and was subjected to unwarranted comments that left me feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. As a dedicated member of your gym, I have always appreciated the facilities and the sense of community it provides. However, the incident in question has cast a shadow on my overall experience. Discrimination has no place in any establishment, and I believe it is crucial to address such issues promptly. I kindly request that a thorough investigation be conducted into this matter. Additionally, I propose implementing diversity and inclusion training for all staff members to prevent future occurrences and foster a more welcoming atmosphere. I trust that you take this matter seriously and will do everything in your power to rectify the situation. I look forward to hearing from you soon regarding the steps taken to address this issue.

Positive experience: Really great experience. Only negative is the menus is so limited when it comes to pescatarian or non alcoholic and they don't tell you if the ingredients include alcohol, so you have to ask. The spa restaurant did offer an ingredient replacement but it just wasn't as nice as it could have been if they just didn't put alcohol in the original recipe. The Carrington Grill was amazing though, and even if a sauce has alcohol, they'll cook you a replacement sauce of your choice and it was lovely.

Positive experience: Beautiful grounds that I discovered - would be nice if some one highlighted the amenities. Food at lunch was strange - advertised as 3 courses when booking but only got 2- drinks and dessert extra. Staff could be more friendly - when we arrived no one told us about breakfast. Lady in coffee shop ignored us and was generally miserable at all times of the day. In the treatment centre the lady at reception was unhelpful after we approached her, felt like she was discouraging us from booking any treatments.

Bethany Taylor 1 year ago

Negative experience: I attended a spa day and was so disappointed. When we arrived, check in took 35 minutes because we were booked in for lunch at 2.15 but our treatments were at 2pm and it took ages to rearrange the lunch. Then there were no flip flops in a medium so we had to have large which were way too big. We then went to get our breakfast parties and coffee but there were no plates, the woman behind took 20 minutes to make our coffees and the mugs were filthy. We then wanted to sit outside but there were no chairs anywhere. We then came inside and all the beds were taken so we ended up having to sit in the cafe. This was the case all day. It was far too busy for the space and it meant we couldn't relax at all. We had a swim and used the facilities but again there was nowhere to sit to had to sit in the cafe. It was so unrelaxing. We had to queue outside the restaurant for lunch for 20 minutes and service was so slow we didn't have time for dessert ( one of our supposed two course lunch) as we had to go for our treatments. The facial by Ellie was amazing. I cannot fault this. Harvey was also really lovely and friendly. I was saddened though that they had run out of champneys products so none could be used in the facial nor purchased. We then wanted a drink and the queue was all the way into reception and I was queuing for literally 30 minutes. Catherine at the cafe was really unprofessional saying how she can't wait for her shift to finish, noone helps her, they never learn etc. Then there was no prosseco left and when it did arrive it was warm. We asked for a coffee and that took 10 mins as soo much faffing. It took 50 minutes in total to get a coffee! The changing rooms are tiny and it was carnage getting ready at the end of the day as there were around 6 people in there all trying to use the same space. I wanted to complain in person but when we came to check out there was noone there and then eventually someone did turn up but she said she wasn't the person to talk to. We tried to settle our bill but the computer wasn't working so she said she would call to confirm the items we had. Noone called and a payment has been taken without approval or confirmation of the items we had. I go to many spas and for £160 for a spa day you'd expect somewhere to be able to relax. It was so disappointing. Thank goodness the treatment was excellent. Prior to leaving a public review I emailed in a complained twice but in over a month noone has bothered to reply not apologize. Shocking service.

Positive experience: Had a lovely spa day and meal. My only gripe was the lack of beds around the pool. We went on a weekday and all the beds were in use by the same people throughout our visit, consequently if you don't get a bed on arrival you won't get one.

Negative experience: Came in January with some friends having booked this for a Black Friday offer (End of November). Found out at the end of December that I was pregnant. It's my first pregnancy so I called ahead to the spa to see if they knew if any of their facilities would still be suitable for me to use (Assuming that this is a typical enquiry they get regularly) and they said yes there are still plenty of facilities for me to use, so I kept my booking. Coincidentally my first midwife appointment was on the morning of the spa, so I checked with her too at which point she told me absolutely not and I should not go in the spas / saunas etc. This was reiterated in signage at the spa when I arrived on every facility explaining it should not be used during pregnancy. Fair enough I thought as I can still go and enjoy a day in the pool relaxing with my friends. However when I arrived the spa was so overbooked (Presumably everyone had booked the Black Friday offer) that they had no towels and there were no loungers available at all for me to even sit or lie down on. The staff were very friendly (Hence the 2 star review instead of 1) and did bring me a towel as soon as they had some clean ones after maybe an hour. In addition to this there were two pools that I might have been able to go in with my pregnancy - the swimming pool (Which was cold and certainly not for relaxing in) and the other pool in the main section which did look inviting, but this one was closed on the day of my spa. I was so disappointed at a waste of a pretty expensive experience that I took the time to write the spa an email with details on my experience in the hope that at least they could ensure that their staff know to tell women in pregnancy the correct information regarding the facility - but noone bothered to reply to even acknowledge my comments. I was not going to write a review, however their lack of response tells me that they won't make any changes so I thought I'd better write on here so potential customers are aware.

Positive experience: Been to champneys at mottram hall a number of times and always enjoy the time spent there. The pool area is nice and the loungers are comfortable, we found there were nowhere near enough loungers on our last visit and we're disappointed to have to spend most of the morning with our towels on the floor. Upon arriving at the spa you are handed a dressing gown and towel, usually you get flip flops, however these had not been delivered and so were not available, as a result we had no flip flops which was really poor, it would have been great to have had a quick phone call or email to tell us to bring our own flip flops!! We had to walk around barefoot, to the restaurant for lunch, the cafe and outside to the hot tub which wasn't good enough for the price of the stay. We also were disappointed to find the dressing gowns to be stained and ripped too which is poor. The facilities are nice, the pools are clean and the steam room and saunas are clean too, there was one sauna which we were not sure was turned on as it wasn't very hot. The cool room is nice and refreshing. The outside hot tub is nice and warm, there are lots of loungers around for warmer days but honestly the cusions on these need a good clean as they were all dirty. The changing rooms were clean and the lady cleaning them was really friendly and helpful. The lockers are really poor with only around half of them working. The lunch provided is really nice, good quality and tased great, but the portions are very small. We had a prosecco (£9) and a slice of cake (£3) in the afternoon to tide us over to supper time. The shop is nice and it's nice to buy a little treat to take home. The staff in the cafe were friendly and helpful. All in all my friend and I made the best of it, we concluded the luxury aspect is lacking in lots of places - but not the prices charged.
