The City Baths, Newcastle: Opinions
Negative experience: Horrendous waste of £200 for 2 half day inclusive packages. Only massage was fab. Wouldn't recommend or return.
Fantastic experience: Turkish baths are lovely and relaxing, great value for money. Beautiful clean and quiet pool, few different sauna temperatures and full on steam room with cold showers. Great way to unwind, towel to sit on and flip flops provided. So glad they’ve properly restored it!
Negative experience: Booked Turkish Baths + Swim for £21.50. After arrived and fully changed into swimming gear, found that the swimming pool was indefinitely closed from what seemed to be a leaky ceiling, and both the steam room and sauna were broken. So the only thing working were the tepidarium rooms. None of this was mentioned at booking or by staff when arriving. Genuinely a scam.
Negative experience: I went to the spa, and some of the facilities were not working, which the staff neither let me know. As I am an older person, the staff were not bothered about my experience and seemed only interested in the money and not the customer.
Negative experience: Had Turkish bath not the real thing had scub that's all.steam room not working couldn't have treatment together so sat on own for hour sauna small could get in shallow end of pool as packed with excise lessons left early was that bad
Negative experience: Expensive couple of hours for some facilities to be out of order and lack of information from staff. Won't be returning
Negative experience: The gym is standard. The pool isn't heated... Not a problem given the vintage style. The Turkish baths is getting to be a bit of a joke. The steam isn't steamy, and it's really not worth the value of their ticket price. I'm emailing for a refund wish me luck. If your looking for a romantic spa day look elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: Really enjoyed my truffle champagne facial the facial was very relaxing love the face and neck massage the spa staff are really friendly and helpful 60 minute facial for £82.00 is well worth the money. I will come back another spa treatment in the future.
Positive experience: Good facility, quite spacious!
Negative experience: Underwhelming. Changing rooms tired and cramped. Turkish baths not nearly hot enough. Warmer in my Nans living room.
Negative experience: DO NOT GO TO THIS GYM! DAYLIGHT ROBBERY! I have never written a review for anything in my life, but this gym has infuriated me so much that I feel like I must. I requested to pause my membership and then cancel it a month or so later. I gave the required notice and did it via the required means. Nobody replied to my emails. I had to go into the gym multiple times in person but they were unable to help. I was charged £80 in total for months that I should not have been. They have never paid me back despite months of emailing, ringing and going in in person. Nobody was able to sort it. Daylight robbery. Don’t waste your time/money with this gym.
Positive experience: Very disappointing- steam room not switched on so no steam, beautiful building but the experience ended at that
Fantastic experience: I love swimming here, and the newly reopened steam baths are a treat, relaxing and a good place to unwind. Good value for money too.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic to have this special place open again and in such amazing condition. It's hotter than ever before! The staff are very friendly, helpful and approachable. Feel totally chilled and relaxed now. Wonderful. Thank you. Lockers £1 and own flipflops a good idea too.
Fantastic experience: Attended today for Turkish baths and a swim. Great experience and lovely building that has been restored to a high standard.
Positive experience: I’m on a binge of reviewing everything I’ve been to since moving to the north east, this place is pretty good 4/5 stars
Fantastic experience: A good swimming experience here. Appears to be well maintained and a relaxed atmosphere.
Negative experience: Great building and so much potential wasted by bad management and customer service. SHOCKING terms for freezing/cancelling memberships (as can be seen with other reviews here). Very bad experience with the staff here, and looking at social media it seems to have happened with others too.
Negative experience: Went tonight they closed early put it on the white board wanted a swim and sauna when i finished the gym but for some reason they canceled the last swim its annoying
Fantastic experience: It's got a nice gym and good size swimming pool and a sauna
Negative experience: crazy t&cs re: freezing and cancellations. And just upped their prices with no ability to get out without paying yet another month to not use the gym.
Negative experience: Sauna has been unavailable for a week now. At this point I should consider cancelling my membership.
Negative experience: Sauna has been out of service for over a week with no sign of repair in sight. No refund offered on monthly fee. Useless.
Negative experience: Most expensive gym in town. Dumbbells used as doorstops! That's absolutely ridiculous! Always swapping equipment around and putting it in silly places. You have a room with proper padded mats and have cardio machines in there. Whilst the bench press is on the regular hard floor. Benches are too close together despite being acres of space. Had a leaky roof for over two years. Drinking water points, one is tepid and the other drips out.
Positive experience: Joined this gym a few months ago. Nice and quiet. Plenty of machines and no waiting. Staff are friendly. Pool is nice but is sometimes cold. Sauna is really nice.
Negative experience: Very rude and dismissive manager. Was offered discounted first trial month by member of staff, they took next month's payment early and refused to refund when I didn't want to continue membership. Was asked to sign up over the phone where terms and conditions weren't explained. James first claimed that they always explain this to customers but a few breaths later said they don't have to? After reading through previous reviews, this seems to be a very common issue.
Positive experience: Average. Place recently refurbished but falling apart already, damaged ceiling, water dripping from the ceiling to the swimming people, only 1 working hair dryer for entire swimming pool, and more other things Closing a bit early on the weekend. Advantage - in the city centre. That’s what made me to chose it. Most of the staff is nice. Cleanliness usually OK. Doesn’t seem to be overly busy nor loud
Fantastic experience: Fantastic newly revamped building in a great location with gym & pool, etc. Very straightforward to get into and out. Staff are polite and professional.
Negative experience: Great place
Fantastic experience: Excellent city centre venue retaining architectural features
Negative experience: Really poor customer service. Different staff members have given me different answers for my problems - there is no consistency/ I get the feeling that staff are poorly informed. I have just tried to cancel my membership and have been told for the first time ever that they will charge you for the following month. I am really disappointed.
Fantastic experience: I saw some negative reviews so thought I'd add my bit. I'm not local, was just passing through Newcastle yesterday. I liked this place a lot. Lovely old building, of course. Very helpful staff member showed me where to go and gave me relevant information - including the fact that the pool is 25 yards not 25 metres. Like other old pools I've used, it's well designed (e.g. if you're swimming on your back you can tell when you're approaching the side, which you can't always with modern gimmicky pools). Very quiet: there were between 5 and 10 people there, and for most of the time I had the fast lane to myself (and I'm not fast!). This was 12:30 on a Saturday. I didn't use the sauna or any other facilities. But if you want a quiet uncrowded swim, with no children around, in elegant surroundings, I'd say it's ideal.
Negative experience: Bought a day pass . For the price of a standard membership I was disappointed with this gym and pool. Also the Turkish bath always seems to be closed. This was probably the only reason I went.
Fantastic experience: Enjoyable Swim & Sauna, Staff friendly & helpful.
Fantastic experience: The City Baths is a great gym. It has excellent facilities and amazing members of staff.
Fantastic experience: Really good.
Fantastic experience: Great swimming pool and changes rooms separate showers great staff
Fantastic experience: The Turkish baths is amazing, you get your own dressing gown, small towel, jugs of water to top up your glass, and hair dryer in chaning room. After you can relax to calming music. Or fall asleep.
Positive experience: Normal baths not made for intensive swimming. Only three lanes and no big clock with seconds at all. Also, no cold shower available for after the sauna, that’s not good for the body. Swimming pool itself isn’t cold enough for that. Sauna was lovely though. And I would like some music while swimming. Wouldn’t pay for it to be honest.
Positive experience: Not bad
Fantastic experience: I went to the City Baths for a Sauna and Swim session. Very good and relaxing experience with friendly staff and a clean and safe environment.
Positive experience: Only visited the baths as I was thinking to change my membership from my regular gym/pool. Lovely pool, beautiful light, small but ok changing rooms. Only 50 minutes and this included time allowed in the poolside sauna also. There were only two other people in the pool for the session I attended and the pool closes temporarily after the session. I suppose this is due to Covid measures but I didn’t feel as relaxed as I usually do when returning from a swim and sauna. You can only sauna if there is a lifeguard present. There is only a sauna poolside, no steam room or cold shower to finish with. If you pay per session its £8 whereas Northumbria Uni is £3 and they have a steam room too. I think the focus is on the gym/health club aspect and less of the pools which is a shame as its hard to find a pool which has good opening hours in Newcastle, whereas there are loads of gyms. Didn’t have a friendly community feeling with other swimmers like some pools do. I was a bit underwhelmed tbh as I really wanted to like it!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym with beautiful layout and stunning architecture
Fantastic experience: Turkish bath and swim was fab, staff were super lovely and helpful. Thank you for a great day out.
Positive experience: I visited to use the steam bath and sauna. It's a good, recently refurbished but historic venue. Using the website to book was a bit clunky but staff at the City Baths were excellent. It's pricey, given that sessions are just 90 minutes in length, but worth experiencing.
Positive experience: Great place would of been 5 star if the first member of staff had of been more helpful as all other staff were great
Fantastic experience: The City Baths are exceptionally well maintained and it is clear the staff care about the customers. Whilst there may have been some teething problems with the booking app in the past these are now gone. I would highly recommend this centre to anyone in the area!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic facilities including gym, pool and sauna. The staff are really friendly and I have found the customer service to be excellent. Good value and nice and convenient for the city centre. This by far the best pool I have been a member of.
Fantastic experience: Beautifully restored Turkish baths. Staff is so friendly and knowledgeable, treatments offered are amazing! The place looks stunning, the decor and cleanliness is really impressive. Definitely coming back!
Negative experience: Horrendous customer service. The poor service resulted in me cancelling my membership and I won't return while the fusion group are managing the site. I do not recommend!
Negative experience: I have booked a session in there online and paid £8 and when I came in there they have forced me to pay again on my card saying that transaction did not work , after my session I have checked my transactions and they have charged me twice - I still did not get any refund and stuff in there very unprofessional and communicating with them seem to be a waste of time - bad place.
Positive experience: Went for the newly opened turkish baths, was a bit disappointed at what was available. Essentially it's 2 hot rooms and 1 steam room, all with the same decor. There's a shower and a tipping bucket and you get a rest area. Maybe I dont understand fully what a Turkish bath is but there was no little pools or anything to relax in. This is essentially a big sauna. The staff were friendly though and it is newly opened and looks like there will be more treatments to come. Not worth the £15 you pay right now but may be worth it in the future.
Positive experience: Pool is nice. Gym seems well equipped. Turkish baths area looks attractive but disappointed that they don't actually contain any baths only steam rooms. Seems very misleading to call it Turkish baths, I was expecting a series of plunge pools.
Fantastic experience: Beautifully renovated, clean changing areas and a lovely pool
Negative experience: Was really disappointed to find out they had filled in the beautiful plunge pool, especially after they had used a picture of the supposedly renovated plunge pool as their main marketing on the website for the turkish baths. I think they ended up spending more time fitting the gym, which this city already has many of, rather than focusing on restoring the baths and pools which were unique to the building and city. Such a shame.
Fantastic experience: Lovely pool and really enjoy swimming lengths there.
Fantastic experience: Everything most people need in a gym. Good combination of resistance equipment, free weights and CV. Big empty space upstairs for stretching, core workouts etc. Never busy! Highly recommended
Fantastic experience: Great equipment and good staff. Gym is usually fairly quiet which is a godsend at the moment. Manager is obviously trying hard to run the gym well. The booking app is a little buggy but otherwise no complaints!
Fantastic experience: I was surprised by some negative reviews as for me the staff have been super helpful and friendly . I only use the pool but as a regular swimmer it’s good value and will be great to be able to go again without booking at weekends . I would remove half a star for cleanliness ! It’s fine now but already the grouting in the showers is getting old with touches of rust . Over all I love the vibe and they have adapted well to the Covid restrictions
Negative experience: Pretty building Limited facilities Staff were not rude but deffo not helpful Swimming pool showers are gender mixed and changing room corridor is muddy af because of the poor location of the showers I cancelled few times and they still charged me few months after, pretty sure it’s GDPR breach.
Fantastic experience: Gym is well equipped and it's usually pretty quiet. That pool is clean, well maintained and kept at a good temperature. If you're willing to pay a bit more I think it's worth it if your fed up with busy gyms.
Negative experience: Probably the worst customer service I have come across. The staff is extremely rude and unprofessional.... all these guys are concerned about is money.... be careful when you want to cancel your membership... they will give wrong instructions and then not even have the courage to take responsibility for it...there are better gym out there...i recommend anything and everything but this gym... worst case buy dumbbells and do it at home but dont go here.... you want to swim? go to tynemouth or dig a bloody pool in your backyard... DONT GO HERE!!!
Positive experience: Got tour & pleased to see this lovely venue's glory being returned. Shame old pool which I swam in up until it's closure is no longer to be seen, but lays under the floor & hopefully for me it will one day re-emerge.
Positive experience: Great to see the vintage features but there are too many inconceniences and lack of comfort for a 'premium' pool and gym. And we are still waiting for the Turkish bath.
Fantastic experience: Nice pool warm and quiet not too many in good job done
Fantastic experience: Brilliant helpful personal and clean facilities. Will be amazing when the spa's ready and opened..
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, convenient location, excellent conservation and refurbishment. The pool, showers, and changing facilities are spotless and well-designed. The decor and natural light levels in the pool make for a tranquil atmosphere. I can’t wait for the Turkish Baths to be completed!
Negative experience: Average facilities, very limited gym equipment (about 5 treadmills, 3 weight benches) not what I was expecting from promotional videos. Aesthetically it's cool what they've done but lots of wasted space and just not enough facilities for the price of membership. Also no published timetables or classes. Also the gym was delayed significantly, but their was no delay in collecting payment .... But no communication about the delay. Hoping they get more equipment, a better mobile app and begin communicating better with paying customers
Negative experience: Still getting renovated so its still closed to the public for now
