Alton Sports Centre

Negative experience: I’ve signed up to use the studio space for personal training. Have been a member on and off for 3 years with no complaints, even though as other reviews mentioned: the gym is poorly maintained, the lockers are filthy and get a clean once every blue moon, a lot of the staff is young and inexperienced. Regardless I continued to train there until one morning I was told I couldn’t. When I confronted them as to why: they first dropped the health and safety reason that they need to be aware where everyone is in case of a fire alarm. I mentioned that I would let reception know each time I am in the studio. Then they said it’s not good for their business because you need to book the studio to use it. I’ve never encountered anywhere. I asked where in the policy does it say that the use of the studio facilities is prohibited outside classes and that it needs to be booked for personal training. They dodged this completely by listing the facilities available to me on my platinum membership. I don’t think the use of free studio space is listed on any membership because it’s just common for people to use it for their personal training. I would like to speak to someone at a higher level in everyone active to resolve this. If the higher ups state that no, it is not allowed, then fair enough. However, I do feel like the young inexperienced staff are just abusing authority, and because of this I now have to cancel my membership and search for an alternative.

Fantastic experience: This gym is excellent for me and ticks all the boxes. Next door, quite big inside with more machine choices than anywhere else I have been before, cleanliness, professional staff and modern inside.

Fantastic experience: 5 star ⭐️ Gym Right off the bat, Matt (the membership guy) was extremely polite and a pleasure to talk to. There was absolutely no pressure to sign up nor was there any pressure to take out the most expensive membership, although there’s not really much in it at all. You get a lot for your money There are a couple of reviews stating that the cleaning standards were poor and changing rooms are dull and filthy. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The whole place is spotless, from the car park to the shower/changing rooms and everything in between. The staff are very polite and welcoming too. Everyone Active is an asset to the community and the staff should be extremely proud to work there. HIGHLY RECOMMEND to everyone. A huge thank you to everyone at Everyone Active

Negative experience: Very hit and miss. Am a platinum member, which isn't really worth the extra money you pay for it as the Spa never has all of its facilities working, though the discounts for the massage treatments and Cafe are handy if you go enough. SPA: The Spa jets haven't worked since i became a member nearly 2 years ago. The steam room and Sauna consistently break. CLASSES: The fees added for cancelling a class (even when there are still over half the spaces left. I can appreciate the fee if there was a waiting list). Classes are a good mix including virtual ones, Les Mills ones especially. GYM: Gym is usually quite busy and not most welcoming for those that aren't self-obsessed mirror posing gym heads. STAFF: On the positives, staff generally quite nice. Generally tidy throughout centre. CAFE: Food in cafe is nice, decently priced and is a nice area to sit post workout, though screaming children in softplay is something you'll have to zone out. SWIM: Swimming/facilities are good. Although the general adult swim sessions in the learner pool are always overcrowded (usually only room for about 8-9 people but allows 15 people to book). OTHER: Poor app/email communication on any updates or changes to class schedule/spa maintenance. Their remedy to complaining about the spa issues (Steam Room/Sauna broken for a few weeks) was to offer you 2 guest passes to said spa...why would you take someone somewhere where you cant guarantee the facilities all work? Wont be renewing once membership expires.

Fantastic experience: A clean and organised sports centre. The yoga sessions are excellent. I am a senior yoga teacher and I am astounded by the wonderful quality of teaching

Fantastic experience: Recently completed leisure centre which is smaller than the one it replaced. Clean, tidy and welcoming staff. Good pool for both swimming and a small pool for the youngsters Used climbing wall and soft play. Eldest grandson found the climbing wall challenging but fun and youngest grandson and Granddaughter really enjoyed the soft play.

Positive experience: Pretty okay, showers are usually clean, ive gone here consistently for the past three years and it's generally alright. Sometimes reception staff ignore me though. Also sometimes the floor is sticky in the showers id say about 12% of the time, gym is also very busy

Positive experience: The facilities are good, but the maintenance is patchy. There always seems to be something out of order: showers, hairdryers, vending machines, locks on cubicle doors…

Negative experience: The app is in accurate, hard to navigate and nobody answers the centres phones. I have intended on numerous occasions to use the centre, but cannot find the detail behind some sessions. Why is an Adult swim session showing as located only in the learners pool?

Negative experience: This place is very badly run. It’s FILTHY , much of the equipment doesn’t work and nothing is maintained. The centre at Winchester is much, much better. Such a waste of money to built an impressive facility and then maintain it so badly.

Negative experience: Alton sports centre is very poorly managed. On the surface its a new facility but when you come here every week you realise how poorly its maintained. The changing rooms are always dirty first thing in the morning. They aren't cleaned regularly and there is always rubbish and talcum powder on the floors. The toilets are disgusting. They stink of urine and the lights haven't worked for over a year. I have emailed in the past, over 12 months ago with a complaint about the lights but still nothing has been done. All I got was a dismissive response to my email from the GM. There are lights that have gone from above the baby pool. Approx 50% of them aren't working. Also there are 3 of the 6 hair dryers out of order. There is clearly a poor management structure in place with little attention to cleaning and general maintenance. It's disappointing to see such a great facility slowly falling into disrepair

Fantastic experience: Lovely FOH staff, gym is clean, weights area always organised and everyone seems to put them back where they belong! Every time I've been in there staff are cleaning the equipment and always blue roll and spray for your own use to wipe down equipment too. Nice studios, yet to do a class. Step daughter has swimming lessons on a Saturday and is loving it! She was petrified and now is so much more confident thanks to Lewis in the swim team!

Negative experience: My seventeen year old son froze his gym membership in writing and didn't attend the gym for 10 months. No refund possible apparently, even though they could see his email and that he hadn't attended... because he didn't respond to an email they subsequently sent about the direct debit...even though it went to his junk mail. Partly my bad for not checking that direct debit had still kept going out. No empathy, all about the red tape, no flexibility, 400 quid for nothing. Awful.

Negative experience: Poor management, no teacher show up for the swimming lesson and no notice, waste everyone’s time!

Negative experience: Absolutely horrible staff. If I could give it zero stars, I would. Having spent over £60 on soft play, another £30 on teas and coffees, we were “told off” for giving our children some sandwiches we made at home. Both kids have various food intolerances so it’s not always possible to find suitable food when out and about. Having visited the sports centre on numerous occasions previously, we knew they didn’t have any suitable food for the kids. We were approached by a horrible woman who had absolutely no customer service skills and only insisted that we purchase food from their cafeteria……although we’d already spent money on expensive teas and coffees in addition to the soft play. The staff there are really a mixed bag. Sarah is a fantastic swimming teacher and such a warm and welcoming face. Unfortunately, the other members of staff don’t all seem to follow her example and this isn’t the first unpleasant experience we’ve had. Such a shame as the facility is decent, the fitness classes are great and instructors overall are brilliant. The reception staff and management however leave a lot to be desired.

Positive experience: Pretty average, if there was a better gym as close to me I would cancel my membership. A particular peeve of mine is that the weights area is a mess, and this discourages other members from utilising it as heavy plates will block lighter ones effectively preventing them from being used. Cable accessories are strewn across the floor and have carabiners missing. The door to the gym needs sorting... change it to an automatic or at least self-closing one. The gym is also too warm and humid, the a/c is often off, and there is no chalk available so heavy weights workouts are challenging if not impossible. The ez-curl bars, trap bars, and ssb could also do with refreshing specifically. There is also notably no machine or bench for back extension such as a hyper or 'roman chair'. A reverse hyper would also be an excellent addition. On the plus side, most of the staff are lovely, and the front desk staff seem to put up with a lot of grief (unsure why). There is also a good range of cable and plate-loaded machines which are excellent.

Negative experience: The worst gym sign up and guest pass system I've ever seen. It sounds like the booking system is comparable. A gym that would be better run by someone else and exists in its current format due to a location monopoly.

Fantastic experience: Really great kids had a fab time swimming lovely helpful staff

Negative experience: Great staff in reception and gym, however some equipment in the gym has now been out of action for several months, there were about 6 Swiss Balls of various size, for the last 2 months now only 2 balls remaining Advised on 26.6.23 that rates are being increased on 1.7.23 I would have expected a months notice of price change. Second increase in the last 18 months, if membership charges are being increased yet again, surely all equipment in the gym should be working and replaced where necessary. Very disappointing

Fantastic experience: Good value

Negative experience: Gym is great, nice equipment and kept clean. However its very expensive if you just want to use the gym. More options to customise your membership would be great! Also very misleading membership. The standard one advertises including access to a Sauna. However even though the Alton centre has one its not included in the membership as its not 'poolside'. Think they need to remove `includes Sauna` from the advertised membership!

Positive experience: Was good and spacious. Everything in reasonable condition.

Fantastic experience: Made enquiry about visiting this impressive Sports Centre for the first time, my dealings with reception were of the highest quality and without yet visiting the centre I am looking forward to arranging my first visit. This Centre is something ALTON should be proud of.

Fantastic experience: I live in Basingstoke and tried all the pools. I love swimming and could not find one pool in my area that had a decent pool that was Clean. I saw good reviews on Alton and thought I'd try. I'm so glad I did. This pool is so nice. The water feels lovely. The staff are constantly cleaning the changing rooms. All front of house staff have been friendly and helpful. The showers are individual and warm. They have lots of lane swimming. It is worth the 25 minute drive for me and I have become a member as I was so impressed. Each time I go the standard is the same. Lovely centre

Negative experience: The single star is given for the one time I managed to navigate the booking system and actually book a swim……lovely pool. The lack of shh other stars is for your RIDICULOUS booking system……my bank barely has more “cybersecurity” and you’re just a leisure centre booking system for goodness sake ……get over yourselves

Negative experience: The soft play is germ ridden. We went to soft play days ago with friends. Now 3 out of 4 children who came along have diarrhoea and/or vomiting.

Positive experience: Nice new leisure centre, we took the kids to the clip and climb and soft play there and burnt a couple of hours. They just need to sort out the entrance system as most people don’t have a card to scan in for the kid/cafe area which can be annoying

Negative experience: I have call on 3 occassions today unable to get thrpugh for over 5mins. To be told i cant speak to anyone Beth who is in charge of GP referals. Told by reception thatz shell call me back. Complete un helpful never took my name I never used the centre in 5 years but not friendly or helpful.

Fantastic experience: Based ourselves here for a dog walk. Beautiful spot. Lovely fields and the Watercress steam train passed by while there. Sports centre itself looks new!

Negative experience: Good sport centre facilities are good. If only their website was useable, it was impossible to find any useful information. And try phoning them, no chance!! All a joke..

Positive experience: This review is really about the soft play. The soft play is really expensive (£5.35), only let's you pay by the hour. My children do ballet at the sports centre at 8:45 and 9:20. They won't let them share a ticket and it doesn't open till 9. I can't pay nearly £11 for them to have an hour between the 2 of them so instead they have to sit and watch. A bit more flexibility since the classes they run don't run by the hour would be appreciated. It would reduce the tears each Saturday when I have to say no to spending £11 to let the 5 year old have a 15min go!

Fantastic experience: As a newbie to using a gym so far I've found it really enjoyable. I've been shown how to use all of the equipment and if I ever have a problem there is always a member of staff at hand .

Negative experience: Since the upgrade to the booking system there have been numerous problems, mainly centred around alerts for spaces on upcoming classes. Also, it is very difficult to get into the more popular classes that have been moved from the main hall and into the smaller studios

Fantastic experience: Quite impressed with the cleanliness in the pool changing area and the pool itself too! First time visiting Alton pool and bought along my 2 year old son. There were two people there continuously cleaning everywhere in the changing room (I like that alot!) First pool I've gone to recently where there wasn't hair, plasters, food, rubbish, old nappies etc so I am very pleased with this place! 10/10 for cleanliness. Unfortunately a rude customer ruined the first impressions as the person serving me had to keep stopping to deal with him as he was being impatient. The staff member dealt with the situation very well, however it meant we didn't get a chance to ask questions (as this was our first time here) so we had no idea where to go to change, lockers, etc but we managed to find everything easily enough. My son thoroughly enjoyed himself here! The showers worked well, perfect temperature. All lockers were clean and they all had brand new-looking locker keys and wrist bands to wear. Most importantly the pool itself was a nice warm temperature! The carpark was clean and lots of spaces too Will definitely be returning!

Negative experience: Really disappointed at this gym. Signed up for a 'free' pass to see if I wanted to join this gym. Turned up for what I thought was a pilates class. Unfortunately the staff member had booked me for body pump instead of pilates and I didn't have the right footwear. Apparently If you don't scan your pass they charge you £4 even if you attend. Wow do you not want people to join this gym? I'm used to London gyms which don't have such a strict policy. They would at least let you try out everything including pool, climbing wall, and all activities, sauna for free without a 'charge' if you don't show up etc. The whole process of signing up for the free pass was pretty painful. Shame because this place seemed like it could have potential.

Fantastic experience: Was sent on a doctors request met Beth my trainer/adviser well she is a very understanding person with all my health issues and has set me on track for my 6 months training I could not have asked for a better person to guide me she is brilliant thanks Beth and the sports centre for having me.

Positive experience: Lovely and new. Great softplay facility!! Lovely cafe! I had really friendly and helpful service from the staff working in the cafe... Especially impressive considering quite stressful circumstances of how busy it was. Continously smiling, cheerful and happy. Only improvement would be a slide at the pool for the kids and for the pool to be warmer during the family sessions. :)

Positive experience: Nice gym for beginners should allow juniors to go at all times as we are paying a lot of money a month for 2 hours a day at a specific time in the gym.

Positive experience: It's a large facility, plenty of parking. It's very popular so always busy. It's clean. Gets 4/5 as the monthly memberships are a tad expensive in my opinion

Positive experience: I use the gym but there are tennis and squash courts well as a pool and all the usual facilities. Car parking is often difficult and half as much again is required. I had to park by the local skate park even though the leisure facilities were nowhere near fully in use, short sighted planning!

Negative experience: Good gym facilities. Fancy website but poor functionality and information with signing up & cancelling membership deadlines. You effectively need 2 months notice now when cancelling as you pay an extra month up front when joining but doesn't detail this anywhere on sign up or DD cancellation

Negative experience: Horribly overpriced gym - £8.70 a session!! Or £40 a month??! Not much variety of machines, lots of machines in need or maintenance or out of date, only good thing was the selection of free weights, but that was packed at 2pm on a weekday

Negative experience: Was really looking forward to going swimming with my girls today Bank Holiday but unfortunately it’s seems the team in reception are in able of booking the correct date. I have now has to disappoint my girls and what does reception say. Don’t worry we can rebook for you they say. My girls have not been swimming for a year and they are in tears. Not great service at all.

Positive experience: Great brand new facilities, well equipped and very helpful staff. I understand they are trying to mitigate contact with the 50 min limit, but this is too short for a good warm up>work out> cool down. I was made aware of this and did cut down on my rest times to account for it but I was on my second to last set of my last exercise before I was asked to leave because my time was up. Slightly irritating. Especially when they have "90 available spaces" and only 20 (at best) were in use during and after the time slot I had booked. This is significant enough for me not to sign up to a full membership unfortunately. I look forward to hearing when this restriction has been lifted (I assume after COVID)

Positive experience: Swimming pool is incredibly wet

Negative experience: Extremely poor, whilst the actual facilities are of very good quality, the customer service was awful, was turned away at the door despite booking and paying in advance due to not conforming to the terms & conditions (despite these supposed terms and conditions not actually being explained on the website or app) furthermore to add to my annoyance they would not even refund me when they would not let me into the session because I "booked online and not at the place" (again there was nothing to suggest this would be the case upon entry refusal) would not recommend here or any other Everyone Active gym, a real shame because they used to be so good. Sort it out with simply better customer service would be as good as gyms such as David Lloyd and Mygym (would be a much better bet going to these ones instead).

Positive experience: A very well used Leisure Centre with many activities. A centre for all of Alton to participate in many different sports. In the process of having a new leisure centre, after much controversy, being built along side it. It remains to be seen whether the new one is as active as the old one.

Positive experience: Nice facilities but poorly managed. No access to swimming pool for general use so we used soft play. No control, older kids using it without paying, crazy queue for coffee. Good facility ruined by poor staffing.

Negative experience: Yet again, I was disappointed, we booked and paid online to play badminton. Nothing was set up, we had to wait 30mins for them to sort it. Dirty floor, dust and mud! Also long queue at reception and only 1 person serving

Negative experience: I phoned to make an enquiry only to have my ear blasted with music and directed to a voice mail. One lost new client at the first hurdle without even speaking to a human. poor effort, and did not inspire confidence in a quality service.

Negative experience: Got told that the gym was closed at 8 on a Sunday although the website said 10.30 ? Is this an online mistake or staff ?

Positive experience: Really friendly helpful staff, love the time I spend here. Aqua Awrobic classes great too.

Negative experience: Edit for new center... Seems to get worse, appears a dislike for disabled people, Only 3 parking bays, absolutely NO SEATING other than inside the pool or the cafe which is packed out when I come on Gymnastics nights. Pain to get in due to barriers, got a card but I don't pay a membership but private to gymnastics club so have to ask to be allowed in, showers not working, toilet on constant flush,. In a nutshell opened to soon and yes it's clean and bright not impressed with facilities.. Old center: No policing of the few disabled bays. 2 weeks running now have had to park at far end due to cars with no disability badges in bays. The centre itself is a little tired at best. My daughter does gymnastics which is not cheap yet worn mats and yards of duct tape holding crush mats together.

Positive experience: Watched MMA fighting here. It was okay

Negative experience: It's pretty ropey. Staff vary enormously, some are genuinely helpful and professional however at least as many are cripplingly bad and undermine efforts of the others. Group classes are very good due to the instructors, but things like missing or broken cables for music and wobbly spinning bikes hamper their efforts. The whole place needs a decent clean and a bit of paint, changing rooms for the swimming pool are grim and the smell of wee pervades, wouldn't hurt to empty the nappy bins now and again either. Little, easily fixable things like locker doors, toilet locks and lights are often broken for weeks on end. Downstairs always smells damp due to inadequate ventilation. Frontline staff are generally helpful but the center seems to managed by cretins, this could be a really good center for minimal extra effort but no-one seems willing do so with the new centre being built next door. In summary, it sets low expectations and continually fails to meet them.
