Fantastic experience: nice clean swimming pool, great showers and open early for that early morning sunday dip :)

dougedj 1 year ago

Negative experience: Cubicles taken while parents shower their children ,other children stood waiting to get dry.staff do nothing about it ,even though its been said to them many times

Jaz 1 year ago

Positive experience: Always clean Absolutely love the freely available bacterial wipes and hand sanitizer which is rare to find nowadays ay gyms. Staff are lovely. Changing rooms and showers do need upgrading and gym area is not massive but it has all the basics and the friendly staff and cleanliness make up for this in my opinion !

Fantastic experience: Fab pool for taking baby and great baby changing rooms

Karen Harper 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Staff always nice. And helpful

Negative experience: Be careful when terminating any contract, they will push the extra 30 days onto you even if you no longer visit the gym. They seem quick to add this extra 1 month charge at the end of the 3 month minimum contract. It is not clear in the contract that 30 days notice is required. They will chase this aggressively and outsource the collection to debt collectors. Not what you expect from a community gym. The only reason I can see why they want to get that extra 30days from you? Take a look at the floor in the men's changing room, sticky, black and been in for a good 15-20years. It needs replacing and money spending on this refurb. Good points- the neon tube lights are an added extra if you're into Instagram. In summary - not a community gym, great for insta, better if you want verrucas and/or emails from debt collectors.

Negative experience: Wouldn’t recommend the gym is fairly small lots of new equipment but unfortunately has been bought to look good and a lot of the machines are not practical. The female changing rooms have 3 showers. One has been broken for around 6 months, the other two approximately last 3-8secs switched on and you cannot control the temperature, both drains are blocked and have been intermittently for around one year. On a regular basis, water does not drain, and often smells of sewage. If there is more than two women wanting to shower you have to sit and wait, mainly on weekdays. The changing rooms overall are very dirty and certainly not cleaned correctly.

Negative experience: It's okay but in my opinion it was better before they refurbished it to many kids bsolutley full of kids specially when adults wanna go to the gym after work some of the staff are abit rude and as a member I still have to show my card even tho they give you a fob to use wich doesn't work entering only leaving

Geoff Storey 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Since the refurbishment and in my opinion there has been a significant improvement. Great set of equipment and I find all the staff excellent. I have however, not tried the swimming pool. The only odd gripe for me is the WiFi signal for me (O2) is very patchy and at certain times the TV’s are off line.

Linus Wake 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Swim Swim very cool

Victoria Shaw 1 year ago

Positive experience: Not bad large changing area nice and clean staff are friendly enough. Have too say the main pool is quite cold compared to the little pool which is a much warmer temperature, that is the only downside if you are swimming.

Kate Carr 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: A fantastic gym with really good classes and equipment. It’s small but this gives a lovely friendly, personal feel. Chris and Harry are brilliant trainers, really friendly and professional and will always push you to be your best! Wouldn’t be the same without them. I love being a member here.

Jon Brain 1 year ago

Positive experience: Children’s’ pool is good and warm and has always been clean when I’ve gone. The changing room refurb was much needed and is now very good. I am disappointed with the website and booking system which often doesn’t seem to work.

John Fairhurst 2 years ago

Positive experience: Another fairly small and shallow pool, though they have a separate pool for the really young children. The space was more constrained by the presence of swimming lessons primary aged children (fair's fair - they need a place to learn snd this depth of pool is near perfect for this). I attended the opening session of the day, so the general swimming side was fairly quiet. The changing area was clean and looked to be quite modern - Romily has undergone a modernisation fairly recently and it shows.

Negative experience: I've been using this gym for nearly 20 years. It was always a very usable gym despite not being the largest gym around. Since the recent 'refurbishment' they've totally killed it. Hardly any equipment & seemingly geared round cardio based exercises. Half the gym is taken up with a weight sled that will be unused for 95% of the time. Bikes, rowers, cross trainers & treadmills all squashed into a dark, dingy room. Totally wasted space throughout. I now feel forced to travel to Stockport Sports Village in Woodley, where I've already bumped into several former Romiley regulars who also feel disappointed in Romiley Life Leisure.

Chris Goulding 2 years ago

Positive experience: Went swimming on Sunday, pool was OK and nice changing area but must of timed it right cause wasn't too busy at the time. Staff at reception was friendly and asked him if pool was open for general swim, he said yes of course then got changed and went to pool, soon as I entered I was stopped by a rude young lifeguard who said we need to wait 15 minutes yet for swimming lesson to be over which took up 1/4 of pool but people were doing their swimming anyway in rest of pool. Good place but some rude unprofessional and miserable looking lifeguards. Also padlocks should be loaned by staff for lockers.

Peter Dutton 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Amazing new equipment and even has sauna/steam

Sam Little 2 years ago

Negative experience: The gym had everything it needed but they decided to strip out all the equipment such as bench press, smith machine, chest fly machine, step machines and string equipment. This is now a gym for old people and fat people who only prioritise cardio. I’m switching to puregym

Ann Higgy 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: I took my84 year old sister with Olivia the staff were amazing from reception to pool staff can't thank enough

Jacqueline Whittaker 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Possibly for the first time ever, I tried the Early Morning Lane Swim...at 6:45 am. I was not alone. I counted 24 Swimmers. There were 2 very elegant front crawl swimmers...cutting the water with barely a ripple. Another first...one woman was competently swimming Butterfly Stroke. I ve only ever seen that at the Olympics on TV. It was all very peaceful and civilised. I easily found my pace, and a slot in the double slow lane .... that's doubly wide, not doubly slow, and swam for much longer than I'd planned...until the nearby Aldi opened.

Fantastic experience: Nice pool

Cheeky Monkey 2 years ago

Negative experience: We book online for the small pool as we had our 18 month old got to the reception was told they are having problems with the small pool can we go in main pool, got in main pool it was even to cold for me and my partner never mind the baby. Got straight out and left was told they sent emails out. No, they hadn't very disappointed and won't be going again waste of money and time. AVOID

Positive experience: Great place for my son to do swimming lessons.

Fantastic experience: Hi Amelia

L Jammy 2 years ago

Negative experience: Life leisure needs a good looking at. Pools too full, staff short. Queues long and slow which then affects the amount of time you can swim for even though you pay for an hour. Kids can't use floats, Fun at a minimum. Having to buy a padlock to use the lockers is bonkers, whoever thought this was a good thing needs their bumps feeling. Stockport with it's national heritage of swimming will be on the decline until this stuff gets sorted.

Anissa Jameson 2 years ago

Negative experience: Not that impressed with the swimming pool. We were in a queue at reception for quite a while, which resulted in us missing 15 mins of our hours swimming time, due to there not being enough staff on reception for the amount of people turning up. When I asked if we could stay in the pool for an extra 15 mins due to the delay I was told no, even though it wasn't our fault and we were there on time. I was just told they were going as fast as they could, OK but I paid for an hour, not 45 mins. The small pool was a little disappointing as there were no floats out for the kids, despite them being on the side, a lady who picked one up was told to put it back. Lifeguards were not very effective as there were kids running and slipping around the pool and jumping in slightly dangerous areas and nothing was said to them. The changing cubicles were very small. The only good thing about it was the slide in the small pool. Not happy about the locker padlock situation..... Having to pay £4 (nonrefundable) to be able to secure my belongings!!!! What's wrong with having normal lockers where you just put a pound in that you get back. That's £4 I'll never see again, and a padlock I don't want or need. We won't be returning there, life leisure Hazel Grove is much better.

Fantastic experience: Working, doing the parks, look a nice place

kenny wright (Kenny) 3 years ago

Negative experience: the. one star is for the new changing room. pool was freezing cold and only half was available to swim , the rest was being used for lessons - this was on a Sunday afternoon! no space to swim as everyone packed into half of the pool. ridiculous padlock system on the lockers . much better pools elsewhere

Jane Stopford 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Lovely clean centre. The swimming teacher is lovely with the kids.

Fantastic experience: Nice now they have completed the work. Shame they didn't upgrade the seating area.

Werneth low Rambler 3 years ago

Negative experience: The 2 stars are for the new changing area. The water in the baby pool was really cloudy and there was black dirt on the floor going through to this pool from changing room, im guessing as they allow spectators in, not checking they are wearing shoe coverings.

Mark Cannon 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Newly renovated facilities are great. staff friendly and great swimming teachers for the kids. Well done to all.

Ian Richardson 3 years ago

Negative experience: Essentially the gym has been turned into an unmanaged youth club at the expense of those paying the full whack. Sauna/Steam room has an age restriction of 16 but that's a joke; again it isn't managed and is therefore a free for all; which is reflected in the quality of the service being offered. It also needs regular deep cleans. The sauna often turns off but there is no way to notify the reception to switch it back on unless you get changed and walk to reception. Certainly not a 'customer first' mentality or experience. Probably the worst gym in the local Life Fitness group.

Mark Walsh 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Excellent sauna and steam room.....really quiet too.

Negative experience: Pool is fine. Having to change in a cramped porta-cabin - not so much... Especially with a young child.

Emily Jade 4 years ago

Positive experience: Okish, went with my son this afternoon in the small pool, he had a fab time, I just didn't like the changing cubicles the fact that you have to strip of and change infront of people, I left 10 minutes early to avoid that situation and also because my son is autistic it would be to overwhelming for him. The life guard on duty was nice, always smiling.

Positive experience: Great to reception, management in Pool is good,. Sept-2022 - Recently refurbished pool reception area and changing rooms. A great improvement on previous facilities Unusually you need a padlock for the lockers,

Paul Goddard 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: This was my first visit to Life leisure Romiley since restrictions had been eased and the main purpose was to have a swim . This was the first opportunity I had to actually book a swim session as they quickly get booked and I really enjoyed it which was followed by a gym session. The staff were greet and very helpful and explained about the refurbishment works taking place . My one criticism of this and the other gyms is that they have got to streamline the booking system so that you can book a swim on the same page as booking a gym session. Plus they should develop a phone and tablet App so that booking can be made easier.

Peter Murray 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: Really enjoyed the aqua session, very well organised.

Christine Marsland 5 years ago

Negative experience: Changing room worn out green stuff grows on walls needs updating asas Pool it's self good

Barbara Harrison 5 years ago

Positive experience: It’s ok if you have some gym experience but if you don’t have any you will have to rely on the good will of the members as there are rarely if ever any members of staff to ask .This seems to be due to staff cuts which leave the facility grossly lacking in experienced support

Life Leisure Romiley
Life Leisure Romiley

Hi Barbara, thank you for your feedback. As a member at Romiley we would like to invite you to take part in our Inspire programme which is free to all our members and is a 3-step plan with a fitness coach. In addition whilst there may not always be someone available in the gym if you just enquire at the desk we would organise that a member of the team would come and help you. Could you possibly speak to a member of the team on your next visit and they would be happy to book you in for an Inspire appointment as a member. Thanks

Negative experience: parents congregate at the KEEP CLEAR door entrance to the swimming pool, Which is a fire door therefore extremely dangerous for the many children in the swimming classes. Also parents stand chatting on the stairs to the pool I watched 3 young children squeeze thought them trying to get to the pool that the stairs lead to also the stairs lead to the fire exit. There's no organisation what so ever, you have to been familiar with the pool to know where to go because not a single member of staff helped my son find where to go on his first visit for a lesson assessment. I left the pool without having the assessment and would never returned again. I wouldn't have gave a star but had to give 1 to post comment.

Negative experience: this is the second time i take my little boy into this swimming pool. The people at reception are very welcome but not one lady with long hair Never smiles, never gives you eye contact, looks never happy. The swimming pool safe guards are very young. Although very nice, they seems to miss the courage to tell people when they should behave. The small pool is always full of children who do not really belong in a swimming pool full of toddlers. Very inconsiderate and their parents also who allow such behaviour. The pools (both) always have hairs floating and this because the management is irresponsible not to implement any hygienic rules such compulsory caps and proper footwear. I swam with my little boy and I wa scared that he could swallow hairs. For footwear ...if the management is not willing to make the usage of appropriate items to wear, then they should seriously consider t put an anti slippery mat so children and adults won't have accidents which they could result in a law challenge and claim compensation. The swimming pool on a day where there is a public swimming should lose the inflatables as they take the whole space and do not allow much swimming. Children of a certain aga should not be allowed in the small swimming pool as they are a danger to babies and toddlers, in particular when they jump into the small pool, thru balls, play without any respect of others around! shane on parents who allow that! The water temperature is not consistent. The facilities (changing rooms) are dirty, inadequate, seriously old. A big investment is needed to take this place into this century. Everything is broken, slippery, smelly. Toilets are appalling. The outside/reception is so unwelcoming, full of everything, not at all well organized. The vending machines should be removed as they promote unhealthy eating. To the management team: Please seriously consider the above points.

gareth holroyd 8 years ago

Positive experience: A bit on the small side but does the job. 25m pool, gym + health suite. Parkings an issue at peak times. Nice staff.

Ricky Williamson 13 years ago

Negative experience: I am 8 months into my gold membership - wish someone had written a review as it does look good on the surface, but should have chosen a different gym. Pros: Cheap The centre staff are kind and courteous Cons: - Cardio Machines A lot of the cardio machines are reaching the end of their life as they're left to fully break down before anything is done to repair them (i.e. Machine side LCD screens changing colour, cycle machines pedal crank bearings cracking clicking, a rowing machines LCD screen is not working) - the machine ends up with a notice putting it out of action for a number of weeks. Have to say, I did see a staff member replace peddles on the cycling machine when someone mentioned it to them - this didn't fix it as it wasn't peddle. Some of the machines will pick up a heart rate monitors, whilst others won’t (even if the other machine is same make and model). Some don't show any channels, whilst some show a bit but with a lot of interference (may as well be off). - Resistance Machines They’re pretty good for resistance machines. Ab crunching machine is missing a much needed head rest as my neck is really hurting (stopped using it now). The leather seats and rests are free from splits with no sign of foam/ cushion. - Free Weights Reasonable selection of weights – some really dated and quite a few where you can’t read the weight – you have to guess your regime sometimes. - Men’s Changing Room Shower has a lot of mould on the ceiling – I would prefer to wash at home rather than risk getting dirtier! Staff are fighting a losing battle cleaning it as the grout has gone beyond dirty with mould. - Women’s Changing Room I haven’t seen these, but my wife has. In very much a similar state – can’t comment on the ceiling as she can’t recall. - Sauna & Steam Rooms Steam Room – has a really funky (mouldy) smell to it, very dated but nothing too bad to say about it. Periodically sprays water onto the walls to clean, but the jets are filthy – definitely needs a good once over. Sauna – Broken floor tiles, broken door, handle was missing for a while, rather than nice stained wood ¼ of it is pretty much black. Both now have been shut down, 14/08/12 for two weeks so far, by the fire Marshall as it contravenes health & safety – I wonder why! Head Office won't offer any discount or extension on membership as it is apparently free facility – this isn’t stipulated on the T&C’s on the agreement or the website. The Village in Hyde at least personally apologised to us and gave us an extra couple of weeks. - Pool Foot pool exiting the changing rooms not always clean (even at first thing in the morning). Seen a plaster stuck to the bottom of the pool for a number of weeks (even lost its pink colour). Overall it is a good price but you don’t get near any value for money. I would recommend trying a different facility and with the recent attitude of the “sauna & steam room being a free service for members" I’d recommend a different company entirely.
