Our comment from FitFit UK about Manchester Aquatics Centre:

Welcome to the Manchester Aquatics Centre, a premier sporting facility nestled in the heart of Manchester, renowned for its impressive aquatic amenities and fitness offerings. The centre boasts superb swimming facilities including both 50m and 25m pools, ideal for serious swimmers and casual visitors alike. The pools are described as well-maintained, with excellent water quality, making them a pleasure to swim in.

Users appreciate the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors. Many have shared positive experiences regarding the cleanliness of the facilities, highlighting that both the pools and changing rooms are generally well-kept. The dedicated fitness areas and various swimming programs cater to diverse groups from beginners to trained athletes, reflecting a commitment to community health and wellness.

However, some users have raised concerns regarding aspects of the facility, particularly the cleanliness of the changing rooms. Feedback about locker functionality and the cleanliness of the sauna and steam room has been noted as areas needing improvement. Additionally, certain visitors expressed frustration with parking issues, and some experienced difficulties with lane management in the pool during peak hours.

Despite these criticisms, the Manchester Aquatics Centre is praised as a great location for exercise and family activities, boasting a variety of amenities including family swim areas and fitness classes. The centre continues to enhance its facilities, aiming to provide an even better experience for its patrons in the future.

Negative experience: Beware of parking - The signs say permit and paid parking however my daughter managed to get a ticket even though she paid to park. I contacted the center in hopes of getting this reversed and Tom the duty manager could not be bothered to pick up the phone to the parking company to enquire as to what could be done. Further more he could not be bothered to contact me as reqeusted in my email as dealing with the public is clearly not part of his job description.

Positive experience: Review about adult swimming lessons provided here. If you're like me, wondering whether to take the plunge as an adult and put off by the lack of information, read on. I joined the weekly 45 minute lessons for beginners. The bar code for lessons never scan for me, so go directly to reception and they'll let you in. Immediately to the left of reception are the changing rooms for the pools. Bring a £1 coin for the locker or your own padlock. Once you're changed and showered, head to the pool (the far side with benches, noodles and kickboards). You meet your instructor there. The lessons themselves are good. Instructors change almost every week but never had a bad one. You get more or less attention depending on who else is in class (usually 3 to 6 people in total). It's a mix of ages and experience. For £8ish a class it's worth it. I'm 5 lessons in and reasonably confident swimming a few metres face in the water without floating aids, and I started as a complete beginner. It will obviously take far longer to learn swimming compared to one-on-one coaching, but the supportive group setting and low price fits my needs. Bring: towel, flip flops, hair cap (if you have long hair), goggles, ear plugs if water entering your ears annoys you, swimming trunks/costume. They provide floating aids.

Thank you for the review P, please let reception know if you are experiencing issues with the scan and they will try to resolve for you. Amazing to hear your progress on swimming lessons, keep going :)

Fantastic experience: Possibly the best indoor pool I have used in decades. The water was he ideal temperature (27°C) and it's easy to pace out a mile in long 50m lengths. Too many pools are too warm which I find discouraging. I'm only an occasional visitor and the entry cost here is lower - so good value for money. Oh, and he staff are really nice too.

Fantastic experience: The pools, changing rooms are clean, staff was helpful and friendly - having issue with my apps and my local pool couldn't fix it for weeks and not helpful and staff in Manchester aquatics center helpful, friendly and fixed it instantly. Was shame it seems the 50m pool only had limited slot.in the AM/PM only, I was after it but only managed to seim on thr 25m on my first visit.

Fantastic experience: Great pool- especially when the 50m lanes are in use. No plastic drinks bottles in the cafe When I asked the manager for a high chair I got a prompt response and a high chair appeared shortly afterwards. Only £1 to park in NCP with a validated carpark ticket- what is there not to like!

Negative experience: I look online on the Better app to see a £1 swim for all for those whos 16 under BEFORE 10am i try to book online to see that they only do swim for all after 3pm but i went it to check and see if they only do it on a specific date and they said they dont do it till after 3pm which means under 16 has to pay full price which is £6 and i dont have that type of money to spend so instead i check on the manchester council website and it says that manchester aquatic centre do it and manchester aquatic centre is the closest to where i live and the staff said to either go moss side which is dangerous or east manchester which is £7 on a tram and manchester aquatics does open at 5:30am and they do swim for fitness all day starting from 5:30am so i dont see why they cant do swim for all before 10am

Fantastic experience: Fantastic place. High spec equipment, everything clean and sterilised. Comes with the trade off of them using a fair amount of chlorine in the pool and jacuzzi. Best to scrub with soap after use and rub lots of lotion in to keep skin hydrated. Overall fantastic establishment, very well kept, surprising organizational efficiency of the staff considering the size and scope. Regular classes and teams e.g diving. Great location- City centre.

Negative experience: The Sauna and steam room need to be more scoured for people and specifically students as there’s many wired and nasty people who are older then students they keep harassing girls and talking nasty and dirty about young girls and guy’s reputation , I hope the staff be so serious with this kind of this behaviour , I know there’s some of them been repeated to the staff but unfortunately not had been change , staff most take control for the steam room and the sauna to be safe pleas to use .

Positive experience: Pool: i like the lane booking so it's not over crowded. However, the way the changing rooms are set up is not very hygenig. you walk on the same spot with your bare feet amd outside shoes instead of having it designed in a way thatseparates street shoe area and barefoot area. There are not many showers, so at busy times you're left queuing for the cubicle shower. Health suite: nothing suite like about this place. same issue of not separating street shoe and barefoot, so it tunes nasty pretty fast. also, as a central european, this place is faaaar from hygenic. it's 2 textile saunas and 1 steam room, i.e. everyone wears their swimmers or even long sleeve cloths on ladies only days and sitting directly on the wood and sweats into it. my friend got a fungal infection twice after visiting. so really not very hygenic. i prefer the continental european sauna tradition of everyone is naked, but sits on their own towel, feels way more hygenic. i went to the mixt gender sauna day and ladies only. the latter is nothing for those seeking a relaxing, peaceful time. it is loud, overcrowded, ladies putting on mudmasks and polluting the hot top. i do not reccomend at all. go to an all gender day, it's more calm, peaceful and respectful in my experience. dance studio groumd floor: took a dance class there, was ok. but afterwards we were asked to pick up a mat for some streaches, again noone brought towles and just layed on the mats super sweaty. nothing for the faint hearted. it only gets an overall 3starts cause i like that there's a 50m pool in the city of manchester. the health suite should get 1.5 stars.

Positive experience: Great facilities, and a wonderful pool. I visited for a lane swimming session, not all swimmers were following etiquette, in the wrong lane and swimming into people. The gentleman on the customer service helpline was very friendly and helpful too.

George 2 years ago

Negative experience: First time after the refurb and I honestly don’t know where all this money has been spent! Same dysfunctional showers and changing areas, hairs and dirt everywhere and let’s not forget the lockers still requiring a £1 coin while the venue is cashless!

Peter White 2 years ago

Positive experience: Lovely to see it restored to its former glory with the recent refurbishment. Don't forget to bring a £1 coin for the lockers. I arrived with cash but not £1 coin and despite the lockers needing cash, the cafe, shop and reception desk is cashless so there are no facilities for you to obtain change. It would be good if they could invest in a few cashless lockers, since that seems to be the direction of travel for the rest of society.

Ellias A 2 years ago

Negative experience: I pay £38.00 monthly. I go to gym once or twice aweek max and there is no water to drink or to take a shower. This not the first time happing

Petr Nikolaev 2 years ago

Positive experience: Only 3 stars because the changing area is awful. The engineer who designed it should be removed from the profession! There are only !!! 3 !!! cubicles with showers. Furthermore, the lockers are in a gender-mixed area. How am I supposed to go from the shower to the locker naked? There's no way; I can only go while wearing my swimsuit again! But then, what was the point of taking a shower before this? There are well-known established design solutions for changing areas in swimming pools. Why should somebody reinvent the wheel?

Andrei R 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Facilities are really brilliant since the renovations in 2023. The pool is much cleaner and the changing facilities have been modernised... which was much needed!

Repsol Peter 2 years ago

Positive experience: Great revamp, clean.improved facilities. Been here with the kids many times, our 1st choice. The Splash pad is great.

Lillie Buttery 2 years ago

Positive experience: Best place I have found to swim in the city centre for a reasonable price so far. The booking system is easy on the app if you have a membership. A tip for adults is use the Health Suite (if you are happy to pay or have it as part of your membership) for storing belongings/showering/changing etc. as it is much nicer and more calm than the main changing village with kiddies/teenagers running around screaming everywhere. The centre would be improved by having a drying machine in the Health Suite (have to walk around to the main changing to do this) also a second “Medium” lane in the fitness pool as there are unused lanes but the “Slow” gets very busy with people who seem to just float about (they could do this in the smaller pool).

Marty 2 years ago

Negative experience: Went in to check it out after the refurb, staff not very welcoming, pricing is confusing, leisure suite is tiny with a weak jacuzzi. Disappointing.

Trudy Roberts 2 years ago

Positive experience: Little disappointing with 37mil spent. Spa is nice, gym room not big enough. Smashed mirror, rip ceiling tiles. Floor feels very concrete, not much spring. No focus on the users/members, which is ashame.

David Ridley-Parris 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Great facilities, large 50 meter pool. For adults looking to swim, choose the “Swim for Fitness” option in the Better app. Lanes are organized into slow, medium and fast so you choose which one best reflects your pace. Showers with doors that close are available but bring your own soap. Changing rooms are co-ed and lockers take a £1 coin, or you can bring your own lock.

Alison Jones 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Para Olympics event. Fabulously organised. Group of 9 were invited. VIP treatment. Great time. Great participants.

zakslittleworld21 2 years ago

Positive experience: Came here with my 8 year old. Very clean. Splash pad is good for the smaller ones . We came during swim for all time and wasnt as busy as we expected maybe due to the new booking system slots. I think 1 hour is long enough. The water is alittle deep conpared to other centres. My boy is 8 and quite tall aswell and when having rests he found it hard. However it does its purpose and we will be returning again.

Ryan Brain 2 years ago

Positive experience: Great 50m pool. Changing rooms clean with lockers that take £1 coins or padlocks and a small counter selling food and drinks. It can sometimes be a struggle to swim here for fitness as the lanes are often not managed well by pool staff, meaning people visiting for just a float about are clogging up swimming lanes. Gym is missing some key equipment, and is a maze to navigate, and the health suite is often very unclean, noisy and not very relaxing.

Penney Bell 2 years ago

Positive experience: Sadly I was trapped in one of the lifts which broke down in this newly refurbished centre ahead of the World ParaSwimming Championships. Despite calls for help, no-one from the centre came to see how we were. It took 55 minutes for the lift engineer to arrive and release us.

Chris Rodes 2 years ago

Negative experience: This review is about the gym. It has most of the equipment but cleanliness is below standard. Be ready to have your own towel or even wet wipes. Most of the time they don’t have any paper to clean the machines and equipment so there’s sweat everywhere. Made a complaint to better as well but didn’t get any response.

Fantastic experience: Recently reopened after extensive refurbishment, this is an excellent swimming and diving facility that caters to both public users and major competitions like the World Paraswimming Championships.

David McLeod 2 years ago

Positive experience: Great experience. I found out you needed to book online and was able to get a space at 4pm. Booking means it is not too crowded and the lanes have plenty of space. Two drawbacks: the 50m pool is divided in two and the public section is only 23m due to the divider and secondly, does not have flags to indicate the ends making backstroke a little harder.

Fantastic experience: First time swimming here despite being to Manchester numerous times. Was pleasantly surprised at the nice and clean lockers, shower facilities and pool too. Only 1 thing is it’s quite expensive for me for 1hr of swim with the use of the locker (£1) compared to pools back home for me. Guess it will be cheaper if I get season pass, but it’s not worth it for me as I’m a tourist here unless I can swim a few times to break even.

Eron Ameen 2 years ago

Positive experience: The second door access to the gym is a hassle because sometime our mobile network is slow, secondly there are some exercise machines which shouldn’t have been put in the cardio, they belong to the strength room.

Frankie Wilkie Coker 2 years ago

Negative experience: I’m not sure the centre was actually ready to open - it’s opened all the same and abandoned being at all appealing for families. The new splash park might be ok if it was warm or had any kind of shallow pool area for younger children. The 1.2m pool is on the cooler side and we had to leave after 20 mins as our three year old was shivering. The changing facilities are a minefield and the lockers are barely big enough to fit your average swim bag and certainly do not cater to families. There are three larger lockers located outside the changing places room but I feel these are designated for those with additional needs. The place doesn’t feel ready to be open with boxes everywhere and staff not really knowing what is going on - there’s an all round fed up feeling about the place. The refurb clearly was not aimed at local families and seems a complete waste of funds. I’m sure those going for a solo swim may find the facilities adequate but those thinking of taking young children for a swim will find there’s not much on offer at the Aquatics Centre.

online management 3 years ago

Negative experience: Website and app have obviously been designed to keep people out. Neither match up, for instance the Aquatics center was offering sessions on the app when website says the pool is closed. It's virtually impossible to book swimming for the kids unless you call the help center register for a call back and get the very nice lady (Caroline) to book it for you but that takes 45 mins. Who ever is in charge of websites app and phone system should be ashamed, why do you have the complicated voice mail system in place ? If you were a business without public money to prop you up you'd be bankrupt. Staff on the ground are usually lovely but they can not get past the shoddy systems in place, management should be ashamed of them selves.

elizabeth drakeley 3 years ago

Negative experience: I had the very unpleasant experience in the pool last summer of a male swimmer coming up from underneath me when I was doing laps. His head contacted my groin area and he grinned but denied that it was deliberate when I shouted at him. There was nothing the staff could have done as none of them saw this and he was obviously going to deny it but when the pool re-opens it would be good to ask staff to look out for such behaviour. Thanks

Positive experience: Great swimming facilities, with plenty of lanes available at different abilities. Huge changing room with lots of locker spaces. Lots of room in the pool due to its Olympic size, although it's only 23m a length when the partition boom is in place (feels a little odd if you are used to a 25m pool) Only downsides were the horrific smell of the gents toilets, the smell of stale urine was nauseating, and there are only 8 shower heads by the poolside for rinsing off after your swim, a little crowded when busy. I'm hoping the refurbishment will fix the issues.

Negative experience: This is what the place looked like many moons ago when I last visted, has there been any improvements made since ? I use to love coming hear in the early 2000s. It was so handy as it is quite local to me. Some of the Olympians use to train there for the 2012 Olympics and the place was spotless back then but when the Olympics finished they let the place go and sadly it declined rapidly. After using this place for years, it was sad to see the state they had let it get to and when I complained to the manager back then and showed him these pictures, there wasnt so much as an apology and his attitude was just "Oh well". It would be lovely to see this place get back to what it once was.

Fantastic experience: It's good to be able to book a place and actually get to swim without people getting in your way, as they have room to cater for people who swim for exercise, swim for leisure, or for families. What would be a great benefit (as with all of the communal changing rooms) would be a couple of hooks on the wall. They would be very cheap to install and a great help because theses rooms are always very small and very humid. The one way system could be mostly left in place too, as it provides somewhere dry to get undressed without unnecessarily wetting your shoes and socks. And this costs nothing.

Negative experience: This gym, for me, indefinitely rejuvenates the definition of dissatisfaction. I am truly disappointed with the refund policy model. It took less than 6 minutes to register and get my first subscription paid. I tried to cancel membership before COVID restrictions, only to find out my account was actually frozen and that standing order subscriptions would continue after 3 months. However, upon asking for a refund, I would be told that it POTENTIALLY could take 6-8 weeks to get my refund and every time I tried to inquire if my case was being looked into, I was not given any info. I completed and submitted a refund form, providing any relevant evidence, and even sent multiple follow up emails. 2 months later, I find myself still waiting, engulfed with a feeling of being invisible and irrelevant to this gym/facility. I’ve never felt so helpless as a customer or former customer. Honestly, I’m now just grasping at straws, hoping that someone, anyone who works here, can do something about this or at least refer me to someone who can. This effort is probably in vain too, however it encompasses genuine distress that I have endured for the last 4 fortnights.

Now what I'm failing to understand is why the last sessions for Juniors is 15:50pm . Obviously juniors go to school, and we all know schools close at 3pm. Now it takes my child a good hour to get home so how please how is 15:50pm justifiable?? Do juniors even go to this gym or is it just for the students?? Please someone explain, bare in mind I've been on hold to them (as I type this review) for 34 minutes still no answer . Am I phoning the HMRC or something??

Positive experience: Great venue, well organised, kind and friendly staff, did not give 5 stars because of the lockers, only few available by pool side, the locks in most did not work. You can lose a few coins before you find a lock that works

Thank you for your review. We will look into the locker situation. Kind regards

Negative experience: Do not bother. I have been going here for a year. 95% of The team are lovely but there are 2 who inexcusably rude all the time. Also, there is no lane management and it’s a free for all. Fast & slow & medium swimmers mix in all Lanes the when you try and move so Your not pressured out the way the life guard shouts aggressively ( guy with the wording tattoo on his lower arm. I explained that he should ideally have fast swimmers in a fast lane now a medium and his response was. “ it’s busy, what am I suppose to do” Another 2 swimmers sighted there agreement about how poor the lane situation is here. I have 2 swims left and after that will spend my money at a better facility Must add that aside from this guy the staff are lovely but there needs to be serious attention to the lanes If you have medium fast very fast lanes then as people to stick to them based on their capabilities

Thank you for taking the time to offer your feedback. Lane speeds are provided as a guidance so swimmers can pick a lane most suitable to their ability. Staff will intervene and advise swimmers where necessary. Due to current restrictions in regards to Covid 19 we have a maximum number of swimmers per lane. So during busier periods the need to keep swimmers safe overrides the speed indicators. However I will investigate the issues you have raised. Please can you email me the time and day you visited the centre [email protected] kind regards

Negative experience: I joined for a month and was no where near satisfied by the condition of the machines and weight lighting equipment, it was rusty and needed changing. there was not many machines to use as most of the machines focused on the same areas. I never used the swimming pool it didn't seem very inviting, so for £24.99 a month I don't believe this will be your happiest purchase. undoubtably wouldn't suggest this gym to my friends.

Positive experience: Went to the aquatics with my son and granddaughters. It is well organised and feels safe. Pity the children's pool isn't open but even so we had a good time

Fantastic experience: My adult daughter, who has Down's syndrome, has been coming here for some years and has missed it during lockdown closure. The new system, which requires online booking, was problematic in setting up. Ash, who works for them (and used to be a lifeguard who kindly looked out for my daughter) was extremely helpful in both email and telephone in resolving the issue for us. We couldn't have done it without him, so many thanks, Ash.

Positive experience: It's a decent place with 2 Olympic size pools, 3 different gym areas and multiple changing areas. The gym area can get quick busy at peak times (I've found it to be around 5-7pm).

Negative experience: Good workout place with a large pool and lots of equipment. However, just now they sent a long email encouraging members to come in during a global pandemic in which social distancing is needed to save lives and keep the NHS from crashing. Horrifically irresponsible.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic facilities both inside and outside the pool area, staff are great every time we go and are very knowledgable as well as understanding to our needs. A place I would recommend (and already have done) again and again. Thank you very much

Negative experience: UNHYGIENIC, concerning that the sauna has been reported to be upgraded.Staff friendly but this was the only good aspect- smells, dirty and not an expert but there were insects in the lockers and changing rooms, BIG ones, wished I had taken a photo but hurried home and as did not think about leaving a review. Will not be going back again! Sad that this is the quality Mancunians who wish to support local facilities have to endure!

Positive experience: Great venue and facilities. Went there then the pool was closed and I think they are doing a refurb but the gym facilities are great. If I lived closer I would consider having this as my regular gym.

Positive experience: Gym: good facilities, got all the basics, could do with a bit more cleaning (no self help cleaning facilities to wipe off oneself after usage) and they don't ever seem to turn on the AC :/ Pool: clean pool, can get busy at times though. Shower and changing room could do with more tlc. There are NO private showers! Health suite: poor! Badly maintained (steam room smells and looks rather dirty), the two dry saunas are almost the same temperature, the whole area around doesn't look well looked after

Positive experience: Gym and pool are decent but changing rooms are tiny, the shower is very weak and you need to pay to use the hairdryer!! £25 a month but you have to leave with wet hair?
