Negative experience: Worst pure gym I’ve been to dumbbells rack huge mess all mixed up every-time clearly no one knows how to count in town ! Half of the cable machines don’t have clips so on a three way cable machine you all have to share one pin for each set piss take when it’s in such a busy setting , you’ve made longbenton Puregym a 50 out of ten props to the workers their never had anything like this before would recommend If you’ve have the same problem !

However we know that at busier times, weights are not always returned and our team complete regular re-sets of the gym. We understand that this is sometimes frustrating for our members, and it is included within our Gym Rules that members should return weights after use. Anybody witnessed leaving equipment out of place will be spoken to by our Gym Team. Negative experience: I was a member of PureGym Eldon Gardens for two years, primarily due to a Vitality discount. I attended almost exclusively during weekday lunchtimes. I am glad to have left and moved to the gym at The Gate. PureGym Eldon Gardens is far too busy, even at lunchtime, so who knows what it's like after 5, although the reviews give some idea. The gym is overrun with students who often gather in groups or with people who sit on machines on their phone (record 9 minutes doing nothing!), making it difficult to use the equipment. The recent refurbishment if you can call it that did not bring in any new resistance equipment, which is a major drawback. With only one arm curl and one chest press machine, it's simply not enough to meet the demand. It became impossible to maintain any routine because, within a minute of sitting down, you would likely be asked how many sets you had left. This constant questioning makes you feel pressured and wanting to cut your workout short. The closure of St. James has exacerbated the situation, leading to even more overcrowding. As a result, even outside of student term times, it is still too busy. This used to be a good time to visit, but the closure has ruined that. I don't understand why this decision was made, as it has only made things worse. I would not recommend going to this gym under any circumstances unless you can visit after 9 PM or before 8 AM. Any other time, it's just too busy. I cannot fault the staff; although I barely spoke to them, they did what they could under the circumstances. However, I couldn't be happier to have left. The gym at The Gate has two of everything on one floor, which means less time wasted waiting for equipment. I can complete my routine uninterrupted, knowing I can get on the equipment I need despite having roughly the same number of people around. Do not join PureGym Eldon Gardens unless top management (not the staff at the gym) grasps the reality that new resistance equipment is needed or numbers need to be capped and that people need to be encouraged to use the equipment efficiently, without spending minutes on their phones.
Positive experience: Needs air con
Hi Poppy, thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. We have recently made slight changes to this area, looking at improving energy efficiency. This is both to control our energy usage, but also with a look to reduce our carbon footprint. By law, we have a requirement to provide a certain amount of fresh air based on occupancy levels, and our ventilation system increases and decreases at different times throughout the day and night, making sure we meet these requirements and provide good air movement around the gyms. These levels are based on size of the gym, and occupancy levels, and are regularly monitored. All member feedback is reviewed, and brought to the attention of our Facilities team, who regularly review any changes we make to our gym facilities and all feedback is taken into account when making any future changes. Fantastic experience: A lovely environment with various equipments for any kind of exercise.
Negative experience: Absolute joke of a gym. Unless you’re going to go at 5am just avoid at all costs. 3pm-8pm it is impossible to get on any machine. Spend an hour there to get 2 exercises done. Closing St James’ and moving everyone here was an absolutely crazy thing to do so props to whoever thought of that brilliant idea. Would honestly rate it worse if I could, don’t waste your money.
Negative experience: Too busy, bad layout with so many extra 'rooms' that it's like a labyrinth. Completely impossible to get on the equipment that you want that there is no point having a routine. Should never have closed the St. James gym. Would give it zero stars if I could

Negative experience: Used this gym 2018-2021 was absolutely brilliant. Just joined again and they have refurbished (if you call it that). Leg machines used to be in one area as did arm, weights etc. now you’ve got different machines on all different 3 floors and no where to move! Just heard news the st James branch is closing which will no doubt make it even more unbearable. Really disappointing especially for the monthly prices, they used to be worth it.
Negative experience: After being at this gym for over a year I'm finally leaving. I'm gutted because while most of the staff and PTs are lovely, I can't stand the overcrowded gym at all hours of the day, and the lack of equipment in relation to this. St James PureGym is going to be closing in June and even with the new upgrade to Eldon, I just can't see how it's going to work ! The gym is already over crowded and I don't think a bit of extra equipment will help. Not to mention it is so so so hot in there at all times of the year (I can't understand why you need heating in a gym when you're supposed to be busting a sweat!) it becomes unbearable in the summer and it's impossible to complete a workout. The lack of Aircon and st James gym closing is the reason I've left - it will be ridiculously overcrowded

Positive experience: A 3-storey gym, with a lot of treadmills and and basic equipements. It is also open 24/7!!!
Negative experience: Standard gym however facilities and equipment need serious upgrade. The soft bench has a huge dint in it to one side and needs replaced as uncomfortable to use. One PT is rude and aggressive

Negative experience: Air con desperately needed on second floor & parts of third floor. I don’t get how PT’s haven’t noticed this, it affects everyone’s ability to work out, it also smells really bad & you can’t blame this on the heatwave anymore it’s literally October

Negative experience: With all the respect nobody gives a @%£# in the specific gym. Free weights are all over the place, havent seen a single personal trainer organising at least a little bit this place. Lot of people just leave heavy loads on barbells; convenient? I dont think so!

Positive experience: I have been there just one time and after that I have decided to change my Gym . I never recommend this place for who are mind about steps, there three floor and too many steps whisky was annoying for me . The atmosphere OK but very busy Gym. In conclusion I recommend use the other branch of Pure Gym in Newcastle.
Negative experience: I faced racism from one of the staff, as I do not speak English well. She never tried to help me, as the door did not open for me, and I asked her for help and she opened the door for me, but she would not do it. I even showed her my membership. It is unfortunate what happened. I will never rejoin this gym.
Positive experience: Nowhere near the standard of the longbenton one.. lots of machines needing a service a bit rundown .the longbenton one is the best pure gym local a would say
Positive experience: Good gym, went at a busy time but friendly people there. A few different floors. Not many staff about but the ones that were there were helpful. =)

Negative experience: Plenty of cardio machines but sadly weight training equipment falls far too short relative to the number of members they accept. Nearly every press bench and all machines occupied at 1pm on a Monday. Place is in a good state just far too crowded for anything productive.

Positive experience: Good gym, gets busy at times. The water fountain is utterly infuriating. Almost zero pressure and warm. It's right next to the flavoured drinks dispenser that you have to pay extra for so no points for guessing why it's been left. No issue with the building water pressure and temp either as they have toilets that fill and showers that work.

Positive experience: Good gym but the consistent lack of air con is turning the gym into a sauna

Temperatures/air con in our gyms are automatically regulated by Smart machines, but if there is a persistent issue staff may be able to override it and can certainly report it to be checked by engineers. Negative experience: Plenty of equipment across floors but issues with air conditioning, cleanlyness and smell. The second floor (weights floor) has non functional air con, the units are pumping out heat whilst the other floors are properly controlled. When I asked about it I was told the roof air con was broken during the heat wave and that someone was coming out the next day...thats was weeks ago and its been more than a month with broken air con, clearly no urgency with repairs. The cleaning units are either empty or filled up elsewhere in the gym. Some cleaning units only have alcohol hand gel to clean equipment with. There is also a lingering smell in the stairwell to the first and second floor that I can only describe as mouldy cabbage. The male changing rooms literally smell of toilet. So if you don't mind a gym literally for the equipment and nothing more then it ticks to box. Update Oct 2022: The smells have gone, thr heat issues remain since the heatwave of this summer but its got worse, 2 out of the 3 sections on the top floor are now too warm leaving obe small area at the back which has a reasonable temperature. At this stage I'm starting to believe the staff are just plain lying when it comes to the air con being broken excuse, I mean why should they care thry don't have to work out in this heat only members do, sort it out! Update Sept 2023. The small area st thr top back is now warm, they claim its between 19-21c, I'm sorry but its just a lie at this stage, even asked for evidence of temps and they just ignore emails now. So. Uncomfortable working out in heat. Avoid this gym. Only reason I still go is because I need multi access. Update June: heat issues ongoing, coolest floor is the third floor, other two floors are not comfortable to be able to work out in such heat. Weeks ago management said they would look to get temporary fans whilst the heat issues were ongoing, suprise suprise no changes! Update sept 23. Still ongoing heat issues, they have blamed being carbon neautral and claim 19 to 21c, load of rubbish its pumping out hot air. Room om third floor went from being cool to very warm. It's broken and they now can't be bothered to reply to emails when asking for evidence of each area temps. Just avoid this place, only reason I still go is for multi gym access. The longbenton one is much better and does not suffer from the issues here. Image to show the flaps down on the air con, some others aren't, makes no difference anyway when the temps in this place are shot.

Negative experience: Classes are frequently cancelled at short notice and the changing rooms are filthy. Ladies toilets still in darkness after 7 weeks with broken lock on one cubicle and a broken toilet seat on the other. Used tissue all over the floor all weekend. Not worth the membership at the moment and the worst state the club has been in for the past 2 years.

Staff do undertake regular maintenance checks and work hard with our equipment providers to ensure that our equipment is fixed as soon as possible, if any should be broken. We are equally as disappointed when this happens and sometimes need to wait on engineers but will have all equipment in full working order as soon as is safely possible. Negative experience: I just signed up and waited 20 minutes for my induction only for the staff to be a no-show. Maybe the gym itself is better but I wouldn't know because I never had a chance to even get started. Wasted my lunch break for this. Also, the email says to wait downstairs outside the pods, but I went inside to see if I could find anybody that works there and there was a table up the stairs that said to wait there for inductions. Either way, the staff would have seen me waiting at the bottom of the stairs if they had bothered to show up. A sour first impression that doesn't give me high hopes for any of the classes.

Positive experience: Very good gym got everything you could want, only gets marked down due to how busy this place can get. Ridiculous at times how many busy it gets

Fantastic experience: Great gym, nice a spacious, good selection of machines and free weights. With a drinking fountain. You will need to bring a padlock with you for the lockers.

Positive experience: Your average puregym but last time I remeber going there were more weight plates compared to now. It's pretty difficult to get a machine or section when it's busy which isn't a huge issue. All equipment has been well used and for the price it's a bit much but a gym none the less

Fantastic experience: Clean but could do with some sorting, free weights being abandoned in any position rather than where they're meant to be which says more about the clientele than the establishment.

Positive experience: Great gym with a wide range of equipment. Only downside is how busy it gets at peak times, but that is expected at a gym situated in a big city.

Positive experience: A bit confusing to navigate at first but once you get the hang of it, it's a decent gym. Has all of the equipment you could need and the staff are friendly. The app could use some work though, because if it doesn't register that you've canceled a class more than 3 times, you'll be blocked from booking classes for a week.

Positive experience: Decent gym, equipment is great. Been going for for couple months here, can get a bit crowded at times. Most staff are very pleasant and have no problem helping out if you need help, however one of the trainers (Ed?) with glasses is very rude and completely ignores you when you ask him anything. I've approached him a few times with queries and he looks at you blankly like ur some weirdo. Heard from many members about this man. The rest of the staff are amazing and good gym overall, but one employee can ruin the whole vibe of the gym. Nothing personal against that guy but it is critical that you have very approachable and welcoming staff.

Positive experience: I really like this gym, I love the classes, the instructors and the central Newcastle location. It just gets so, so busy when the students are here that you struggle to get the kit you want to train on.

Negative experience: Came here from another PG... didn't feel welcomed. One member of staff I did see I smiled and greeted with a blank expression. Too many people just sat on machines not using or cleaning.felt very uneasy

Our gyms are very popular and can become busy, especially at peak times! The busyness does fluctuate throughout the day, and from day-to-day. We have implemented a section to the website and the app which informs our members how many people are in the gym at that time and a graph to show the previous busyness of the gym on certain dates for comparison which we have found has really helped our members plan their workouts. On the cleaning, staff do regular cleaning checks in the gym and we have dedicated cleaning teams who come each night to carry out and comply with internal and external audits. Of course, during peak times it can be difficult for us to compete all cleaning routines, however as soon as it is possible our staff will complete all procedures and checks. If you have concerns with the cleanliness in your gym we can check the cleaning rotas and ensure all procedures are being followed. Fantastic experience: Great gym with plenty material to use for both bodybuilding and cardio. Great and friendly staff also. Only complains other people would have is that it has stairs and if you don't have the lift access you will be going up the stairs quite a bit between changing room and the 3 different floors.

Negative experience: Cheap with 3 floors but it's so busy that you just can't actually excersise to a plan it's more a case of jus grabbing what's free whilst you can and skipping what's never free.

Fantastic experience: After a hefty Christmas period of Pints & Pies. Decided it was time for a change. Especially with the Mrs calling me Massive Mike at the dinner table I have tried going to the gym on my own and doing my own thing in the past however this has not worked, hence the state i am in I started a PT class with Georgie, so far i could not be more pleased, she is fantastic. I have lost 2 stone and i could not be happier, i am expecting even more to come. 5 star from me
Positive experience: Great gym for the price, plenty of equipment and helpful staff. Word of advice: Avoid from 5pm is possible due to it getting really busy.

Fantastic experience: Friendly Staff, dynamic Cycle classes, very enjoyable. Lots of treadmills, bikes, weights etc... Enough equipment for everyone, even during peak hours.

Negative experience: Had a member be shockingly rude to me whilst using a squat rack and there wasn't a member of staff in sight to complain to. Haven't been back since, being a young woman in a busy gym full of men is intimidating enough. Would never recommend this gym to anyone new to the gym or a bit anxious about exercising. NOT INCLUSIVE OR WELCOMING Hate the fact that I actually paid for that kind of experience

Positive experience: A decent Puregym. For the price you pay it is well equipped. The 'functional' area on the top floor is a nice area. The free weights area is very busy when I go and as with most commercial gyms the equipment is never put away properly.

Negative experience: I have been a member here for almost 3 years and I have really enjoyed using this gym, however, there are probably more negatives than positives about this gym. the equipment is great and the new improvements they have made to the top floor are amazing (if you’re ever able to use it). It is very central and overcrowding is a major issue and should be addressed ASAP. None of the dumbbells on the second floor are in the correct place and it drives me insane. I have access to another gym that I use outside of Newcastle and the personal trainers often clean and help to put back weights when people haven’t bothered. This helps to keep the gym nice and tidy but I feel that the workers here aren’t proud of where they work and don’t care to keep it looking nice. The personal trainers are lovely but I have noticed that some would much rather be on their phones than training their clients. Almost every time I go ,which is usually 5 days a week, something is broken. This is obviously due to people not taking very good care of the equipment but things should be fixed a lot quicker than they are.

Please be aware due to the situation of our gyms it isn't always possible to extend the site itself, however, we are always looking to expand and improve our facilities where possible, so please keep an eye out for further updates. It is in the gym rules that members should return their own weights or risk suspension, but at peak times especially it can be hard to police this. However, staff on site do everything they can while we also have CCTV monitoring the free weights and are looking for new ways to combat this. Please note gym staff undertake regular maintenance checks and work hard with our equipment providers to ensure that our equipment is fixed as soon as possible, if any should be broken. We are equally as disappointed when this happens and sometimes need to wait on engineers but will have all equipment in full working order as soon as is safely possible. If you have any concerns about equipment, please notify staff on site as soon as you can. Unfortunately we are unable to tell what equipment this is regarding from the review above and therefore pass this information on. In the meantime, I really do hope this does not put you off from attending the gym. Thank you, Ru, PureGym.

Positive experience: Terrible smell sometimes, very crowded, machines are not arranged properly for those who want to do supersets. Non of the members uses a towel. The gym needs improvements. Nice functional area, and machines are new.

It is in the rules that members should bring their own towels as a courtesy to other members. We made a conscious decision as a company to not provide wipes so we could reduce waste from all our gyms. Fantastic experience: This is a great gym! i am really impressed! It has all the equipment I need for resistance and cardio training! I like functional training so I am loving the top floor which is functional heaven! However, I would like to make a cheeky suggestion ... if the gym want to invest in a new piece of equipment to buy a curve treadmill to also place in the functional room which would take it from a 10/10 to 11/10 as its the perfect 'natural' treadmill! However thats me being picky and its already a brilliant gym!
