Our comment from FitFit UK about Catmose Sports Centre:
Catmose Sports Centre is a beloved fitness hub located in Oakham, known for its strong community atmosphere and friendly staff. Many users have praised the helpful reception team and the wonderful fitness instructors, especially highlighting their support during various fitness journeys, including pregnancy workouts.
Visitors enjoy a wide range of activities available at the centre, from kickboxing to roller skating and fitness classes, making it a great option for families seeking local recreational activities. It's also noted as a fantastic place for children, such as during the popular Friday night roller skating sessions.
Despite the many positives, some users have pointed out a few areas for improvement. The gym equipment can appear outdated, and the space itself can feel a bit cramped at times. Additionally, the closure of the swimming pool is a significant loss to the community, leading to some concerns about the overall membership value. However, many members are still keen to support the facility and hope for its continued presence in Oakham.
Overall, Catmose Sports Centre remains a valuable asset to the local community, offering a friendly environment, a good selection of classes, and supportive staff who strive to help members achieve their fitness goals.
Catmose Sports Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Lovely place, with a real community feel. It's closure will be a big loss to Oakham.
Negative experience: NOTICE T V TEXT . LAST DAY OF TRADING 31/5/2024.
Positive experience: The gym equipment is rather old and the place is looking tired. But pleasant staff and a friendly group of members.
Fantastic experience: This is a wonderful fitness centre with brilliant staff and fitness instructors (especially Sarah and Rachel). I attended the gym throughout my recent pregnancy and felt very supported and encouraged- I continued to attend until the week before I gave birth!
Fantastic experience: Love this sports centre! Reception team are always lovely! Great selection of activities to try here, kickboxing, roller skating, gym. Loads more too. It's so nice to have a place like this within a reasonable driving distance. There's not a lot for kids to do in Rutland to be honest, but this place is a little gem.
Fantastic experience: Just want to say that Vanessa on the reception was very helpful. Thank you
Positive experience: Great staff and classes, but the gym space is a little cramped, and some of the cardio machines have busted displays. Please come and support the gym so we don't lose it.
Positive experience: Instructor who helped was brilliant and knowledgeable, as are the people on the front desk. Equipment is fine, although some of it is looking tired.
Negative experience: Don’t let me do pull ups without a band or use free weights when I do them at home
Fantastic experience: My kids go to roller skating every Friday night 6-9pm, along with 300 others! Lots of fun!
Positive experience: It has very nice facilities and the staff are lovely. It is very warm though, especially in the main sports hall! So please take note and dress accordingly and fluid up.
Positive experience: Great staff thankyou Anneke for getting me started on the road to fitness
Fantastic experience: Finley is 6 Birthday Cake and Present
Fantastic experience: Great
Fantastic experience: We have just celebrate our daughter 6th Birthday with a Zumba Party and the children absolutely loved it.. parachute, bouncy castle and games it was packed full of fun! The staff was great and very helpful. Highly recommend.
Negative experience: Gym is a bit small and swimming pool is now closed
Negative experience: The map says that there is a pool here (and previously a 25 metre pool) and a decision by the council NOT to re-open it - I am due to go on holiday to Rutland and like to visit swimming pools in the area . The membership was really easy to do a pay as you go and then tried to book a swimming slot - I sent an e-mail through the website asking how and when I could book swimming - later that day I had a call to say the council had closed it It is a sad loss to the people of Oakham to lose a pool like this, especially as it is the county town of Rutland and a lose to the younger generation (including families)who will have no where local to swim. If the council ever read this I would suggest looking at re-opening the swimming pool especially as it is next door to a gym!! -
Negative experience: Signed up for the gym paid in full for the whole month realised it wasn’t for me cancelled in person and then my direct debit now I’m being charged over £60 Plus late fee for not also doing it online it is ridiculous It’s not only the most expensive gym but the machines are out dated and it’s ridiculous that I’m having to pay 2 months fees for 1 entry Save ur money and go to the Bee fit
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, something for everyone, and home to the Roosters! Bestest small fighting k1 club in the country!
Fantastic experience: A good place to exercise and friendly staff.
Positive experience: Very friendly staff, were extremely professional during covid, very clean, one piece of equipment broken in my 6 month membership hence stars.
Fantastic experience: Excellent Gym for the Oakham area.
Fantastic experience: Excellent service and very professional and friendly staff
Negative experience: Was actually ok until the pool got closed and membership fees remained the same as with the pool being open - one of the most used facilities at the centre. I would go and support BEFit gym, a solid establishment with a much wider abundance of equipment, and I still live much closer to Catmose. I will now be using the BEFit gym which is situated on Long Row in Oakham. Absolutely disgraceful that fees have not been reduced since the pool seems to have no signs of reopening in the near future and I would definitely continue to use the centre if it remained open.
Fantastic experience: Love this place!! Xxx
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and friendly and helpful staff.
Positive experience: Great facilities. A but hit and miss on customer care though.
Fantastic experience: No swimming pool now
Fantastic experience: Safety for the public using the pool is very good looking forward to getting back there in 4 weeks
Fantastic experience: The staff here are really helpful.
Negative experience: Shockingly awful swimming teacher in stage 2 terrible had to stop my children's classes kn February on a Sunday morning because the teacher was so bad, shouting at the children and causing them anxiety unnecessarily, needless to say we have not started lessons back there and we won't be returning there!
Fantastic experience: Nice modern facility, friendly staff
Negative experience: Its old, tatty and not worth the expense, do yourself a favour and try somewhere else.
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff, feel really safe with what they have put in place since they have reopened.
Fantastic experience: What a place! All your leisure needs in one place with knowledgable and lovely staff
Positive experience: Some parts a bit dated and spoilt by shared school facilities.
Positive experience: Very good experience
Fantastic experience: Amazing gym very clean and plenty of activity’s pool is also awesome
Negative experience: Terrible. We were there for senior county badminton championships. - Nets were broken and faulty. - Floor was dirty, we had to clean it ourselves with a broken sweeper. - 2 courts were unusable as basketball nets/hoops we're down and couldn't be retracted. - A 3rd court had cricket nets overhanging. - Hardly any seating / benches so people were left to sit on the floor.
Negative experience: Very unclean around the pool area. Attending weekly and over the last few weeks I have been alarmed at the dirt immediately surrounding the poolside. I can appreciate that there will be dirt in the poolside viewing area, but even this area does not appear to have been cleaned very recently either! Really disappointing.
Negative experience: We need a pool
Fantastic experience: Great place to relax
Positive experience: A nice sports centre, it was clean and the staff where friendly and helpful.
Positive experience: Could be so much better. Facilities are adequate, but tired-looking. Revamp definitely needed.
Negative experience: The gym isn't that we'll equipped. The are no punch bags. It's not bad but if I had other options this wouldn't be my first choice. Too expensive as well
Positive experience: Moderate gym and swimming pool.
Positive experience: Needs a new roof and working locks on the toilet doors
Fantastic experience: Joined approximately 4 months ago. Very helpful staff. Worked out a great programme for my needs with regular reviews. I'm achieving my goals. It's refreshing to see people of all ages , abilities shapes and sizes using the facilities. Well done Catmose, sooooo happy.
Positive experience: Some equipment not working for many weeks.
Fantastic experience: Two youngest grand children enjoyed swimming lesson.
Fantastic experience: Nice stuff.
Positive experience: Good exercise, body tone. Good teacher.
Positive experience: A well equipped sports centre with a good private gym. Light and airy. Generally a pleasant place to train but a few rough edges are starting to appear. Some of the fitness machines are looking old and tatty. The lights in the changing room turn off whilst you're in the shower and one of the showers is faulty with a broken valve and hasn't been fixed. Reception staff are excellent though. Friendly, helpful and welcoming.
Fantastic experience: Good gym great staff
Fantastic experience: Very good
Fantastic experience: Excellent and supportive instructors, excellent range of classes, instructors devise a fitness programme for you as part of your membership, well worth £35 a month!
Fantastic experience: Amazing food and service. High recommendation from me. Family friendly.
Fantastic experience: Looks fantastic
Positive experience: Great sports centre
Fantastic experience: Play badminton on a Tuesday afternoon 1.30pm. Come and play, standard of play good.
Positive experience: Membership costs £35 per month but includes full access to the gym equipment, most fitness classes, swimming pool and trainer reviews. A trainer can help you gain what you want from visiting and put together a fitness programme which is reviewable. During school term times it can be a bit hectic after school closing due to students attending too. Wednesday's I find to be the least busy around the 3pm - 5pm times. Friendly staff are always on hand to help with any queries if needed.
Fantastic experience: Good
Positive experience: Basketball game
Positive experience: Big place
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Superb modern sports centre. Nice staff
Positive experience: Nice and tidy enough but didn't get full marks from me because it's price went up just after another gym closed. And you can't have just a gym membership, and I I would probably never use the pool or any of the yoga classes.
Positive experience: Good gym facility & wide range of Les Mills classes.
Negative experience: Poor, planning is weak, they don't advise swimmers of half the pool being closed, lane swimmers therefore become a risk to other swimmers as you have 11 swimmers in 3 lanes including steps, and a young child, due to cadet training being notified last minute . The swimming pool supervisor herself admitted to me she only knew about it 5 minutes before. And worst of all is the absolute disinterest of the staff members when trying to put across these issues. I will be raising this health and safety issue with Rutland county council, Cancelling my membership and going to an establishment that actually care about their members. Only just joined as well.. good pool to swim in though when properly managed.
Fantastic experience: Quality staff who are always happy to help and very friendly,
Positive experience: Health
Negative experience: The swimming pool and its staff either need a complete overhaul or replacing. Complete lack of organisation, lack of continuity, lackadaisical staff and lifeguards who allow dirty shoes and footwear around the poolside (despite instructions otherwise), shambolic lessons without any real structure or aim and constant excuses why they can't.. instead of why they can. If it were my business, I'd fire them all and start again.
Fantastic experience: I go here every morning, the gym is opened promptly at 6:30 (if not slightly before) and everyone working there is top class. From the receptionist wishing me good morning, every morning to all the trainers giving advice whenever it's needed. Plus the classes are great!! Definitely worth the membership!
Fantastic experience: The staff have been a positive group of support during a period of injury.
Negative experience: Inept. Have been going to the college for years and I'm sure it's not the fault of the staff there who are probably underpayed and not trained well enough but they just can't get it together. They always mess bookings up and are unable to reliably sort the simplest of issues. Considering they have a monopoly they are not cheap by any means neither. Great facilities buy why go there.. Because there is nowhere else (I play five a side). Useless for years but no one cares... A real shame. :/
Fantastic experience: My they have previous issues but the staff are very friendly and efficient and I recommended to my friends Great selection of classes too.
Negative experience: Yet another inept display of booking prowess - Catmose Sport Centre is the very definition of poor management. For the umpteenth time they have managed to double book a block booking. Amazing. So the 7-10 year old girls from Oakham Artistic Gymnastic Academy turned up - as they have done every week for the last few years - only to find their area of the sports hall has been double booked and the cricket wizards are taking priority. This after last week managing to double book the badminton block booking. No communication to parents advising them of the issue - yet they're quick enough to send e-mails out when they want to grab your money off you. Plus the swimming pool is closed ... again. This after spending tens of thousands 'updating' it. Money well spent, then. My advice - stay away. The sour-faced girl on reception sums the whole management team up - they couldn't care less, they have no respect for customers and even less for the teams and clubs that spend their money "booking" the halls to use on a regular basis. What a fiasco. How long will the town council carry allowing Stevenage Leisure to run this otherwise adequate facility? Still - I expect I'll die one day and never have to go back to that awful place. Soon, I hope, because the place sucks any life or joy out of you.
