Our comment from FitFit UK about Sports Centre:
Welcome to the Sports Centre in Newcastle Upon Tyne, a great facility that caters to a wide range of sports and fitness activities.
Key Features:
- Spacious and clean environment with modern equipment
- Extremely helpful staff and trainers
- Excellent atmosphere with great facilities for tournaments and events
- Good selection of exercise classes
- Affordable membership options
While many users appreciate the variety of equipment and the helpful staff, some have noted challenges regarding crowding and booking sports courts, particularly during peak times. However, the continuous improvements being made, along with a commitment to cleanliness and safety, make the Sports Centre a top choice for both students and local residents.
Sports Centre: Opinions
Negative experience: Nice
Positive experience: Good huge sports center
Fantastic experience: I only used the gym here, which was great. Clean and plenty of equipment which prevents crowding and having to wait or share between sets.
Fantastic experience: Great place and clean
Fantastic experience: Great
Fantastic experience: Extremely helpful staff and trainers
Fantastic experience: I attended for a badminton tournament. The facilities were perfect
Fantastic experience: Spacious with multiple equipment for every type of training
Fantastic experience: What a brilliant facility. Clean, great atmosphere, super atmosphere.
Positive experience: Decent quality and range of equipment, but quite cramped, and some equipment (i.e.cardio) is over populated with the reverse for some helpful but specific (i.e.hamstring curls) are under populated.
Negative experience: I had my first exam after the pandemic in this place. The review is meant to be funny, and it is justified as the university made the exam in the sports hall . Very unfriendly proctoring procedures, examiners were all retired and very aggressive, shouting yelling at you if you leave the exam immediately after the paper is drawn from you. My first time experiencing that a student in 3 hours exam cannot have coffee . People seem to find these events I am describing normal here. That's what we call life
Fantastic experience: good helpful staff, came here for a basketball match and the view from the upstairs was great. there’s also some vending machines as well which is great for a long match. there was seating downstairs however i found the seating from upstairs was more comfy
Fantastic experience: great spot to play some sports with mates or workout at
Positive experience: Should also have swimming pool
Fantastic experience:
Fantastic experience:
Fantastic experience: Love the new spinning bikes!
Negative experience: Imagine spending £30m and buying loads of technogym.
Fantastic experience: Very clean and modern equipment. Not crowded and well maintained. Covid protocol is well maintained and followed.
Fantastic experience: Patient and accomodation staff members. The facilities are clean and preventive measures are in placed.
Negative experience: A gym that prioritizes elite sports like rugby and rowing; they let them take over the gym and intrude on everyone else.... Very bland inside. Good equipment though just a shame it's very much dominated by wannabe athletes
Fantastic experience: Best gym and sports facility for staff and students.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant venue need more signage its easy to get lost
Fantastic experience: The facility was recently upgraded to cover more floors. The place is amazing and members of staff are very helpful. In my opinion one should pay for the full one year subscription, makes economic sense since it's very affordable
Fantastic experience: It's a good place with helping uni staff
Positive experience: Staff can be very very arsey, and don't seem to particularly enjoy their jobs. It's being done out at the moment so it's very inconvenient to walk all round the outside of the site in winter... Also the showers don't always work. I'm sure when it's all finished it will be great but in the meantime it's a real hassle
Negative experience: Ridiculously expensive and no swimming pool...
Fantastic experience: No swimming pool via the price
Negative experience: Only good in the Holliday times not uni term time as the gym is small and always crowded. It has only 1 squat rack, 3 benches and no kettlebells or other equipment found in most gyms. Next year I will be using PureGym down the road instead.
Fantastic experience: A place to release your stresfull after exam by doing exercise
Positive experience: NCL' s sports facility with various courts for sports
Negative experience: staff too serious and not mercy, very ridiculous policy
Fantastic experience: Fantastic facility which is improving massively in size and quality over the coming months
Fantastic experience: Nice people, Excellent equipment, counter-intuitive to have a vending machine there, but hey whatever works. Water machine is slow and a bit bust but better than PureGym and definitely worth the price. Following-up, after using the gym for 4 years I can say that they gym has completly changed. More space, more machines, cutting edge training facilities, lots of new water fountains and, air conditioning. Not a fan of the TVs everywhere as I feel like I'ts part of some Orwellian nightmare but I suppose its personal preference.
Positive experience: Average.. Should be open 24x7
Positive experience: Great options and pricing for University staff. Poor class descriptions though so try everything once!
Positive experience: Bit pricey and not very coordinated in terms of programms. The location is awful, i mean it's so far away from everything that sometimes that is even one more reason not to go to the gym haha
Fantastic experience: Perfect
Positive experience: Not built yet
Negative experience: Ridiculous policy. You will not able to enter here unless you pay guest entry fee even your friends booked a court. While in Northumbria Sports Centre, you are free to bring your friends here no matter they have membership or not as long as you booked a court. Newcastle sucks in its sports facility compared to Northumbria Uni.
Fantastic experience: I can't praise the place enough - fantastic. You have not lived until you have been to one of Sheri's classes. She is the best instructor in Northern England bar none!
Fantastic experience: nice basketball court.
Fantastic experience: Great place to visit very friendly
Fantastic experience: Excellent service and the best way to improve your physical condition
Fantastic experience: Well kept facilities and student membership is fairly cheap
Negative experience: This place is very disappointing. When it was built it was probably ok, but with over 8,000 members, it's become too small. You buy a membership only to discover that you cannot access the sports hall because it is ALWAYS booked. It's unbelievably busy. I will try and get my membership refunded, and if you can, look for an alternative. This is simply not the place to be. Newcastle University is not a good place for sports.
Negative experience: For all the students and clubs it serves it is far to small a gym. Range of equipment is good. Peak times there should be a time limited on equipment particularly barbell stations... same people on things for massive time periods. No chance of getting on if ur doing an hour work out.
Positive experience: Amazing staff but the freshmen make a mess
Positive experience: Some good facilities, but let down by the size of the gym and absence of a pool
Positive experience: Got equipment that you expected to have in a normal sport centre but kinda small comparing to other universities.
Positive experience: Good selection of exercise classes, but it gets crowded very often.
Positive experience: A bit small, but good range of equipment and activities available
Fantastic experience: Really good environment to exercise
Fantastic experience: Great classes
Negative experience: VERY crowded and VERY small especially the resistance training/free weights room which has just the VERY basic and just ONE set of each, 170 per year is not cheap for the service it provides. For a university campus of 24,000 students I would expect better.....
Positive experience: cheap membership, and hot babes
Positive experience: The gym is good. But the sports hall are to be shared with badminton, basketball, volleyball, takraw and many other sports. Sports courts are hard to book via Newcastle sport centre website. Always fully booked. Hope to have much more bigger sports facility.
Negative experience: No parking for visiting buses and treated shockingly when asked for directions
