Negative experience: Trying to leave them is nearly impossible. Didn't realise they needed a 3 month notice and beacuse I missed the December timeline they want me to pay for that also. Nearly £800 to leave!!! They have ended the cancellation email with a threat of an external collection agency (nice) - which we all know what that means. I'm not using the gym so why should I pay - I know I can't get out of this. Avoid!! Wish I never joined

Negative experience: I have been a member of DL Purley for a couple of years now. I always felt that in comparison to all other branches, Purley felt old and was always behind group standards. In the past year it really has deteriorated even more. The gym: the gym is old, dark and smelly and most of all dirty. On the regular the mirrors are filthy from people leaning against them or touching them and they are also frequently broken. Currently the one next to the e-gym is broken and there was glass all over the floor when it happened and I almost sat down in it to do an abs workout. Luckily I realised quickly enough. The gym equipment is falling apart - especially the cardio machines. Frequently out of order and most machines are missing cup holders etc. Also, nobody puts their weights away. Hygiene: the gym is filthy - the other day lots of dust and actual clusters of dark grey dust clouds were being blown directly onto the stretching mats. I skipped stretching that day. The pillars on the wall are filthy and also covered in dust and lovely chewing gums too. I did step ups along the wall and used my hands to balance and hold on - my fingers were black after touching the wall. The pool/spa area: where do I even start? It’s a health and safety issue at this point! First of all there have been numerous times where there was no water and I had to leave without showering, which is horrendous after being in the pool/spa area. The pool itself (the large one for swimming) is filthy. I have gotten a rash all over my body after swimming numerous times and it smells bad especially at the end of the pool. I also once swallowed some water when swimming for a while and I got sick with a stomach bug and fever for a few days. This raises concerns about the maintenance of the pool. Raised this with staff directly and via the app for over a year now. Nothing has changed. The whirlpool inside the spa- you can’t even sit in it without your eyes watering, it’s actually painful sitting in there and has caused skin issues multiple times. The sauna and the steam room outside the actual spa is even worse. The steam room smells and the sauna seats are frequently loose. The last time I almost injured myself walking on the wooden planks as I was trying to get to the top and it went up on the other side. Also been raised numerous times. The cafe - dirty and fly infested. Smells like a Britannia hotel - if you have been unlucky enough to ever stay in one of those, you will know exactly what I mean. Now there is also an article that states mice infestation. Staff at the reception (especially two young ladies - I don’t know their names unfortunately) are extremely rude when you do need help or assistance with it. Most of reception cannot even be bothered to greet you when entering. Often times I say hello and do not even get a response. There are two ladies with an exception to this - one lady with blonde somewhat curly hair - she is wonderful. And a young lady with very long brown hair - she is also wonderful. But it should be the same standard when I am paying the membership fees I am currently paying. The reception staff infuriates me with their attitude. Now my membership is coming up for renewal - I have been through a few price increases in the last couple of years but this year it is a 14% increase on my membership. How am I paying more but the club is falling apart and I am getting less for my money? Wheee does the money go? Because you aren’t using it to clean, refurbish or hire decent staff. I contacted them over the app that I am wanting to leave as the price increase is not in line with inflation, but most importantly the service is below standard. I would have thought they would retain loyal clients, but all I got told is that I can have my membership cancelled immediately. They did not address any of my complaints or concerns. It’s laughable. So I will be cancelling my membership as not one single member of staff actually cares about retaining members or addressing concerns raised over the last few years. Disappointed in David Lloyd’s.
Fantastic experience: Me and my Family joined in September with Tyler and have been absolutely loving the facilities. The Spa and Kids clubs are great!

Fantastic experience: Fantastic Club excellent facilities. Mike the manager does a fantastic job and Casey and dangerous Dave bring amazing energy to the tennis courts. Gemma is a blaze legend Been to DL clubs all the country and this by far the best one. Also recommend a visit to Wing yip or wallington express for an after workout snack only 5 minute drive .

Negative experience: I cannot believe they have the audacity to charge £174 a month when the restaurant is infested with flies and they have mice running around. And that’s just a couple of the issues. I will not be renewing in December! Don’t waste your money guys!
Positive experience: Good facilities and some members of staff are nice. The club needs some maintenance though in the showers, changing rooms and toilets. Blonde lady at reception with Eastern European / Ukrainian (?) accent is the rudest receptionist I’ve met and does not present well to clients, who expect to be greeted well for the prices we pay. Almost everyone I’ve spoken to has had a similar experience with her.

Positive experience: Friendly, helpful staff even though it was very busy on my first day, a Saturday. Chef made a special bap even though it was outside the breakfast time. Flexibility goes a long way as it feels more like they are at least trying to give you a good experience. The monthly fee for that privilege is another story!

Negative experience: Another DL club with great facilities on the tin but some good for nothing staff taking the piss. Honestly, it's not worth the cost. Reception staff sound like they are from 5 star hotel but as soon as you walk in, disappoint comes along. Over priced alright stuff with quality but poorly managed facilities. Such a shame!

Negative experience: The instructors I have had, especially Lizzie (Pilates) and India (Aqua) are fantastic. The facilities themselves look good at first glance, until you look a bit closer. The showers in the ladies never look clean and the changing rooms look quite tired in general. The family pool (where Aqua takes place) always makes me come out in a rash and my eyes sting - which to me indicates that they put way too many chemicals in instead of giving it a proper, regular clean. The floor in the family pool is also always gritty. The Spa also is a bit grubby. This could also have to do with the standards of hygiene of some the visitors - many of whom, by the way, don't pay for it - they just tailgate behind others or are let in by other members - why am I paying more to use the spa when so many people cheat and get to use it for free? I counted 8 people going in by tailgating or being let in by others in just 15 minutes the other day! Many people using the spa have no regard for others, talk loudly or even shout, and showering before entering the whirlpool or the plunge pool is apparently too much to ask for the majority of spa visitors. There should be more regular controls and cleaning, and there should be some kind of measure to ensure only those who have actually paid extra for the Spa Retreat can use it. Class room 1 has seen better days, is creaky and looks tired and worn. We will not be renewing our membership when it comes up for renewal in the new year. For almost £4K a year for just two people, we would expect much better maintained and cleaner facilities. It is extremely overpriced for what it offers.

Negative experience: Really disappointing- there appears to be a fly problem which has been there for months now- and I would imagine is fairly easily fixed. Definitely doesn’t give the luxury experience that the monthly price would reflect.

Negative experience: To everyone saying David Lloyd has nothing to compete with, even the 'better.org' spas are a much better deal. They are cheaper and cleaner than this club.

Negative experience: There are some fantastic staff and instructors at the club, but the cleanliness and maintenance of the gym has really declined. There are flies all over the lounge area, the kids lounge is always filthy with food all over the floor and dirty plates left sitting often for hours. The family pool was freezing the other day due to a broken open window which has been like this for weeks without any action being taken. My little boy was almost blue by the end of his swim lesson. Sadly this place really isn’t worth the money anymore.
Negative experience: I've been a member since 2019. You guys have lost my membership, I'm sure that it matters to you as a company the place has just become so unhygienic I actually do not understand how it's not been closed down by health and safety, mould, flies, mice and rats everywhere . The gym hasn't been improved since I've joined and it's not really much better than a pure gym in fact recently I went to a pure gym and the equipment was better. Most of the problems never really get fixed things, in the spa, I constantly break, get a plaster and then just break again. Most of the staff are great, and i can't thank them enough for my time it's a shame the issues are never fixed.

Fantastic experience: Never really write reviews but the service I received last week has prompted me to do so. Been looking for a new gym to join and David Lloyd was on my shortlist. I was shown around by Joey who was very knowledgeable, friendly and explained things in a way which, instead of coming across like a sales pitch, felt organic. I left feeling that my needs had been listened to and understood. My positive experience with Joey has made my choice a whole lot easier.

Negative experience: So i came here for a tour as per request from my friends i was not impressed. As a person who has worked in the indrustry previously this David lloyd was too busy even at 11 in the morning.....the gym feels like your in an aircraft carrier....very poor lighting and machines are outdated. The only good thing I could say is about the spa but again really crowded on a weekday at 11 when everybody should be at work so peak times must be horrendous. Definitely not worth the money feels like a leisure centre with a spa. Overflowing bins and running out of towels seems to be an issues from my friends who are members. The whole place needs updating and the car park is a joke even for a 15 min visit

Negative experience: Looking st the reviews, I wonder how tge total score is still at 4.1? Must be something wrong here... Disrespectful to their own clients. Trying to capitalise on everything. Charged me for parking in a child bay when with my child for not displaying a permit, while we were never even notified about introduction of a permit system. No emails sent despite they insisted thay it was. Cameras could have been checked. No permit sent to address despite our child is registered with us. When introducing new rules, allow for some period for your clients to even hear of them! Refused to provide videos for someone damaging my car to my ensurers despite multiple promises. Impossible to reach anyone ever on the phone. Very poor management of the club. Must be coming from the very head locally. Probably they will increase my membership for this review. I will ensure to update it. Shame, there are not many alternatives around. And it could have been such a good club... If you are positioning yourself as premium, start from treating your customers like that.

Negative experience: Probably about 987 flies on the restaurant ceiling . This place is disgusting, they should put the whole place in the bin and start again. DONT join, EXPENSIVE and NASTY!!!

Negative experience: I am really enjoying what this gym offers in terms of fitness and classes both here and at its sister in Cheam. However the main car park here really needs some thought - Please can you put some form of speed brakes in here? Like the yellow ones you see? There are far too many people driving at speed in this car park or looking at phones -very dangerous!! And not that expensive to resolve. As a footnote to this there is a significant minority here driving cars that are far too big for them to handle and park so myself and others get scratches and scuffs to our cars - I am investing in a 24 hour dash cam! And will take action against people who damage my property and drive off !!

Negative experience: Have been a member for around 18 months, club has fallen into disrepair, flies gather around plates that have been left for hours. Mice, maggots and mould. I have been persistently contacted customer services to freeze my membership however they ignore my emails.
Positive experience: Mouldy showers - has been like this for at least a year. Also noisy people in the spa retreat and changing rooms - staff need to control this. Otherwise a nice place to be but the difference between the showers at Purley and Raynes Park is stark Edit: I emailed as requested, and no one replied, but since I made my review some (though not all) of the mould shown on the photo has been removed

Negative experience: I've been a member of David Lloyd Purley for three years and in that time the club's facilities and hygiene have seriously declined. It's frustrating that such important issues continue to be ignored despite leaving feedback and talking to management directly about them. While the staff are great, management is terrible at addressing concerns. The only reason I’m still a member is to play squash and be part of the community, but even the squash courts are in desperate need of attention. Flooding after heavy rainfall on Sunday has damaged the roof and surrounding areas and this has been an ongoing issue that management continues to ignore. Urgent repairs and new flooring are needed to prevent this from happening again, but nothing ever seems to get done. There’s always something faulty in the spa, and the adult lounge is freezing, even in the summer. It’s been three years and still no heater has been installed. The DL Kids area has a constant foul smell, the toilets are filthy and it’s clear the whole area needs a deep clean. The female changing facility and showers are in similar shape, with leaking mouldy ceilings and walls, weak water flow and toilets that don’t flush properly. The hygiene in these areas is shocking. I wouldn’t recommend this club at its current state to anyone looking to enquire.

Negative experience: I've been a Platinum member at David Lloyd Purley for just over a year, and I have witnessed the club facilities and general hygiene deteriorate significantly. Feels like a scam, to be perfectly honest. The ladies' toilets smell foul more often than not, the shower ceilings are full of mould, the water pressure in the shower is inconsistent, the sink area is always covered in water and the overall ladies' changing room requires better ventilation, and a deep clean as the floors are grimy (and it requires improved daily cleaning). The Adult Lounge wasn't insulated very well in the winter 2023-2024, which meant I opted to work from home on a couple of occasions despite wearing up to three layers of clothing. A heater was supposed to have been installed (a bracket was put up and still remains there) but for whatever reason, it wasn't installed and we face the prospect of enduring another cold winter in the Adult Lounge. Also, there is always something faulty with the spa facilities, and my eyes often burn from the chlorine water when it comes into contact with bodily fluids (use your imagination). As such, the spa is not as inviting as it sounds. From talking to many other David Lloyd members in recent months, I know my disappointment is widely and deeply felt, and from what I have heard, management do not take member complaints seriously which is incredibly disrespectful towards the people funding the club - an 'elite' club at that. That aside, the staff are, for the most part, professional, personable, efficient and helpful. But I wonder if, partly due to staff shortages and/or insufficient training, the facilities and hygiene suffer as a result. Either way, this problem lies with management. I would not currently recommend this gym to anyone enquiring.

Negative experience: Update 2/9/24 Thanks for the response below, but like many other members contacting the club directly is a waste of time as nobody responds or takes it seriously! In the response below there has been no mention of what is to be done about the poor lighting and walls that are falling apart. I am sure that I am not the only one who would like to see some care and attention directed towards fixing / maintaining and improving the squash facilities Original post: Squash courts are in desperate need of immediate repairs! I spoke to the general manager about most of these issues in person about 4 months ago, nothing has changed! Roof and guttering leaking so currently all the carpets are soaked and smell, which is why towels are on the floor in the photos. Paint / plaster flaking off walls of the actual squash courts, lights very dim due to bulbs need replacing etc. Why is nothing being done about these maintenance issues? especially when club management are aware of all of the above for a considerable period of time.

Negative experience: Good facilities and always busy but not sure what is going on at the minute with a huge number of flies in the bar / meeting room areas. Hundreds of fruit flies on the ceiling, next to the food. Not an environment to enjoy working, eating or socialising. Given the membership price, this should be sorted ASAP.
Fantastic experience: David Lloyd Purley is a fantastic club with excellent facilities from Racquet sports, swim, classes to the Spa. The squash is an area I am very involved in, lots of classes for all levels, Teams and Tournaments to get involved in. A really friendly part of the club to be involved in and have made many friends.

Negative experience: Overpriced, over rated. Members intelligence are insulted on a regular basis l. Just this week (no resolution date or even a date for a dste): No indoor hydropool, No plunge pool No cold from water tap in Spa Various unpleasant smells around the spa, pool etc. Always facilities out of order, why are these not fully repaired with no hiccups, is this really acceptable whilst taking full membership fees from trusting/loyal members???!!! Nearby clubs all getting upgrades if you want to spend north of £250 for Diamond+

Negative experience: Staff adding 5 star fake reviews claiming to have joined DL clubs and had tours up and down the country - disingenuous to say the least! 25/10 - Sat in the bar and it was filthy - chips and mess all over the floor. Mentioned it to a staff member who snapped at me to tell me they were short staffed and parents don't watch their children. With all respect, that's not my problem. As a paying member I expect a clean and tidy environment and not to be talking to staff about their issues. I then sat there for about an hour and a half while a cleaner hoovered around the mess, staff were chatting at the bar, and doing a variety of other tasks, while the mess remained. Premium pricing for sub par facilities. There is *always* something broken. In recent weeks outdoor spa hot tub, indoor spa pool, plunge pool, steam room and showers have all been unusable at points. Shower in spa was broken for weeks. Plunge pool has been broken for weeks. Changing rooms and toilets constantly smelly and filthy. Showers and toilet doors missing basic things like hooks. Outdoor pool is always full of leaves, sand, dirt. Water outages happen every other week meaning no toilet, shower or water fountain facilities. There is never any apology or member compensation for these broken facilities. Not even getting to use the things you pay for and not so much as a drinks voucher by way of apology. Have sent feedback via app in the past and response from management was pathetic and didn't even address all concerns raised. They don't care about service quality as there is no luxury gym competitor in the area which is the only reason I remain a member however given constant price increases and terrible quality I will be questioning my membership when it's time for renewal.

Negative experience: Update 06/09/24 - Worms in the showers area Update 04/09/24 - mould in showers, broken tile in the pool, plunge pool part of the Spa retreat faulty. Been a member since 2019, 2 stars for the good indoor courts that I predominantly use just for tennis. Good gym, friendly staff, nice cafe and it all stops there. Hazards in the making, often no water, poor cleaning facilities and worst of all your cry for help will fall on deaf ears. No financial compensation for loyalty! For e.g. what will you do if a premium club charging 5k a year for a family says sorry we ran out of water? You expect financial compensation, right? No compensation what so ever. Choose wisely! Don't fall for the obvious #davidlloyd #poorservice #badclub #no compensation #notpremium

Negative experience: Not a surprise, I came last evening to use the spa retreat, only to find out: 1) Ice plunge closed 2) Indoor Jacuzzi coosed I remained patient and used the other spa facilities. On my way out sadly the showers went out of service too… I had to dry myself from the spa and left the gym feeling filthy. I don’t think I will be renewing my membership. This is not the first time this has happened. What a waste of my evening!

Fantastic experience: The best gym I’ve ever been to, honestly would never go anywhere else. From 10/10 service to amazing equipment, what more could you ask for? Josh and Mike were particularly helpful as it was my first time coming here and they were wonderful, so welcoming!!

Fantastic experience: This gym is so well equipped. The outdoor space is perfect with the outdoor seating over looking the playground so you can relax whilst the little ones play. Great tennis courts, such a great spa. I highly recommend. Oh, and the best vegan burger I have ever had!

Negative experience: Made an enquiry to join today. Just been diagnosed as diabetic, so want to lose some weight. Wanted to use gym, pool and sauna; not interested in classes, cafe, tennis, etc. Spoke to Tyler and explained my situation; he said it would cost £219 per month. Made no attempt to keep me on the call when I balked at the price. Ridiculous pricing and disappointing customer service

Fantastic experience: Lovely tour by Tyler, really knowledgeable and understanding of concerns and possible restrictions to my being able to make full use of membership. Shame there's no corporate discount for charities as the cost is I think beyond me for how often I'd be able to attend. Can see how different it is to other gyms in the area though, the cafe was so busy and so many inviting areas to sit and relax or work. If there was a doggie crèche I'd be in!

Fantastic experience: Lovely, but expensive. Gym facilities, spa facilities, pools are amazing. Soft Play is basic, as is outside playground but both well maintained and clean. Cafe/restaurant is good as well

Positive experience: Even when the gym is not busy all the free weight spots are, you have to wait your turn really long when people with their notes and training programs are keeping the free weights busy... way too busy.

Positive experience: Reception staff always nice. Spa is lovely. Gym is well equipped. Staff are lovely. Adults meals are great but kids meals are poor quality. Very cheap tasting from the nuggets to the fish fingers. Crèche looks good but soft play area always dirty, kids iPads always broken & no sound on the tv. Not really for families. I got 5 kids and I am hesitant about joining any of them. Although the environment is a safe one. Only plus. Tennis cardio with Winford is awesome. Wish there were more of these classes available, as they are over subscribed. Total body workout with Noel was great. He’s very methodical and does things step by step. Both Perfect teachers. Aqua aerobics was lovely. Kind teacher. Zumba was a shambles. The instructor acted like she was in a rave with her partner and did a million dances in the hour most of them seductive. Crazy nonsense with no real teaching. Hence the 3/5 stars. There are a real mix is ages and ethnicities which is lovely to see but then the classes need to be more tailored to this. The cleaning staff work really really hard. Non stop cleaning. Some people really take the biscuit and they don’t moan. They are also helpful.

Fantastic experience: Visited the club and met with Kyle from the sales team, was very informative and could answer all my questions- so happy i joined with his assistance. He asked me my personal goals and catered my tour to my needs! the club has a great atmosphere and couldn’t recommend enough! :)

Negative experience: The softplay is absolutely disgusting on every visit! Food all over tables & floors I appreciate this is a child’s area it’s like a breeding ground for germs! The toilets have always got puddles! The staff who bring the meals are so rude & argumentative who speak about you an whisper every time you enter the gym! Not a nice environment for the money we are paying

Negative experience: It’s really gone downhill- something is always broken (today no water pressure or swimming costume drier or jacuzzi)- which is a shame because the staff are nice! For the price of the membership I am not seeing the benefit. Raynes Park I visited at the weekend and it was phenomenal- it’s confusing why there is such a disparity between premises.

Positive experience: Good facility, great variety of class for adult, but we joined family membership because of their good planning of kids’ activities. However, I am a bit disappointed lately as weekend kids classes are always fully booked even though we get on the app first thing when new classes are released. App got jamed due to busy traffic. I hope that DL can facilitate more kids weekend activities.

Fantastic experience: I mean if you know David Lloyd gyms they are pretty posh. Facilities are well looked after. Indoor tennis courts. Out door tennis courts, outdoor swimming pool, indoor pools for both adults and children. A gorgeous spa area with multiple jacuzzi steam and sauna rooms including outside jacuzzi and sauna and a bunch more rooms and facilities. Spa is probably the highlight of the membership. But the obvious draw back is the price. Pretty steep and I would wager most people who don't have that disposable income would want to make the most of everything they can whilst attending. Got a nice cafe with decent sitting space. Staff seem friendly and helpful. And have a decent amount of parking available.

Negative experience: DO NOT JOIN THIS CLUB. You will be surrounded by noise and young kids. Over £200 pcm for the pleasure. I can join Virgin Active and have the same experience, for £50 quid p.m. As for customer service...phff...forget it. I've been waiting for a call back from my club and no one has bothered. Once they have you're money in their account, that's it. All that rubbish on the advert eh? Makes me laugh every time I see it. So, no more throwing my money away on a dream. I compare this to being in the British library....no matter how busy, it's always quiet and peaceful. Staff don't care about your experience, so I'm afraid to say ... I'm off...

Negative experience: I pay extortionate amounts of money to be a member. The changing rooms are filthy. I complained to reception and showed them photos taken on Saturday, they got the duty manager who agreed it was unacceptable and said it would get cleaned. I explained that if area was not cleaned by next day I would leave a Google review….so here we are. Where: Male adults only area

Negative experience: Re-joined DL after a few years with other clubs, 1st visit to home club, this was the state of men’s and family changing between 7pm and 10pm on a Saturday night, amazed there was no signs of cleaning in the 3 hours we were on site. If google did scratch and sniff the images from Mens changing would reek of stale urine.
