Gymbox Elephant & Castle: Opinions

3.6/5 (199 Opinions)
Hellfire Meteor 10 months ago

Negative experience: I received the most sickening, repulsive, nauseating, foul service I could've experience for this price tag. This is Hellfire and I'm brutally honest in my reviews. Searching for best place to train in the area, I wanted to see the gym (multiple times) and what I received is absolute shocking. The highest part in this experience was played today by their staff, someone at reception, a male, mid 20s, curly hair, extremely rude and arrogant. I'll get to this in a bit. Their booking system to see the gym is an absolute joke, I tried arranging through Wapp, bot was useless, they called me, I couldn't in that time, I tried rescheduling, they couln't find my name in the system and so on. The following days they kept buzzing me with calls to see the gym. I told them to literally leave me alone and stop harassing me because I won't be able to see the gym in THEIR available time, I have MY schedule as well. So I decided to just pop in and see it myself, I know what I'm looking at (training for ~17 years). Wrong choice. First time I pop in, a lady at the desk alongside multiple staff members tells me "we can't show you the gym now, no tour booking slots available". Complete waste of time. Second time I went today, Friday 13'th, 2024, around 9am'ish. Two staff members at the desk, that same lady that was there first time and another (super rude, full of himself) mid 20s "teen" I'll call him. I asked nicely I just need 3 min to see the gym, no need for lots of time, as I have work anyway and I know what I'm looking at. Very aggressively tries telling me to "just book the tour online" because "that's how it works". I tried telling him, because of this lack of flexibility, they might lose me as a customer for life. He said "don't care mate, so what?" Well, Gymbox, I'll tell you what. Me as a potential customer x 10 years membership/monthly = how much loss? Additionally, I told him "I will review this on Google", he says "yeah go ahead mate" like I'm some kind of buddy of his, having complete lack of awareness of what his behaviour does to the gym. Complete lack of respect. Well, I went ahead. Now, because of my personal anti-recommendation for this Gym + this 1 star review that will potentially deter members to sign up = how much monetary loss £ over 10 years, GymBox HR? Exactly, unmeasurable. Train your staff, improve your "see the gym" system, improve your customer service, sack that guy, teach him a lesson. You want us to pay that horrendous price, GymBox you better show for it. Oh, and I still haven't seen the gym. Brilliant. GymNation on 26 Druid St is the absolute best gym I've seen in this area, yet. Service, equipment, everything. Go there, see for yourself. Oh, they also have "online tour booking system" but they were super nice and flexible when I just popped in to see it. Ruthlessly, Hellfire.

Positive experience: Hate the dj sets, nothing wrong with the djs or music. It's just too loud, it's a gym not a club. Otherwise amazing gym, equipment and facilities, a bit too busy.

Positive experience: It’s a great gym. All machines are usable. Sometimes the toilets are a bit gross. I my opinion the it’s a bit overpriced compared from what you get but still fair for London :D

Positive experience: I love the classes. A huge variety and worth all the money. Well equipped gym with everything you need and big spaces to work out. I loved my tour with Claudio he was very helpful.

Fantastic experience: Really good facilities, and the spin classes that Angus and Laurence run are absolutely fantastic!

Negative experience: I used to really enjoy this gym, but lately, the lack of membership control has been a major issue. It’s always overcrowded, even during mid-day when you’d expect it to be quieter. I find myself constantly waiting for equipment, no matter what time I go. It seems like the gym is prioritizing profit over providing a good experience for its members. For the price you pay, it’s becoming less and less worth it. Also, why do they have 10 cross-trainers but only 2 stairmasters, which are almost always in use? You end up waiting forever just for one. I’ve mentioned this issue before, but it hasn’t been addressed.

Fantastic experience: I joined Gymbox a year ago and I never stop raving about the Bike and Beats classes to everyone I know, especially Angus’ - his classes are so much fun you ALMOST forget how hard you’re working !

Fantastic experience: Big gym with lots of classes Two large free weights areas, with plenty of machines to use. There is a fully equipped ring for boxing and other martial arts, a selection of bags and balls for training on as well. The gym has a 30m sprint track with tyres and sleds for training with As well as a large frame for pull-ups and body weight exercises

Fantastic experience: Been training at gymbox for 6 months now and do spin class 4 times a week. By far the best spin classes in London. Tuesday and Thursday nights with Angus are by far my favourite. Excellent music choice, experienced and encouraging spin instructor and always making the class exciting and fun. Angus is the best

Negative experience: Nice facilities, but only the staff was lying when I was trying to get the membership, I’ve emphasized that I don’t want the auto subscription to they staff and they said that’s alright in the end of the Aug when I’ve tried to get a membership for September. While I’ve been auto charged on October and I’ve tried to send an email to sort out the problem but they said it’s my problem that I didn’t read the contract carefully…… so what’s the meaning of I emphasize I don’t want the auto subscription to the staff? And why the staff lying to me……

Serhan Kuseyrioglu 1 year ago

Negative experience: Very crowded, more over I am moving to another country and want to cancel my membership. They are charging me for the whole month of October even though I applied for cancellation in mid September Charging your member for 1,5 months for cancellatipn is definitely not fair

Ish 1 year ago

Negative experience: Been training her for a while, almost a year now. There is barely any equipment, and the gyms always crowded. I would like to add the issue that affected me the most, there is a lot of predatory gay men, I have no issue with genders at all, but it makes my uncomfortable. I usually find myself in the sauna, with men wearing nothing at all, no towel or underwear, and they try to make conversation with me when I am trying to relax. This is very uncomfortable, I hope the managers can do something about this. The gym is also overpriced for what you get, better of going to Nuffield or fitness first

Rebin Abbas 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Great gym with great staff! I’d like to give a shout out to Dylan especially, having him back at Elephant & Castle just raises the energy in the gym and he’s always happy to help out!

kayla wang 1 year ago

Negative experience: I've been using this gym for three months now, and unfortunately, I've encountered several frustrating issues: 1.Misleading Consumers: When I signed up for a three-month membership with Gymbox, I was never informed that I needed to cancel the contract one month in advance. I assumed the membership would automatically end after three months, but to my surprise, they continued charging me beyond that period. This practice is highly unreasonable and feels deceptive. 2.Inefficient Communication: After signing the membership, any issues or questions can only be addressed via email, even if you try to get help from staff on-site—they insist that you email them. However, their email response time is extremely slow, usually taking 5-6 days. This makes communication very difficult and inefficient, leaving problems unresolved for too long. 3.Overcrowding: The gym is extremely crowded most of the time. On weekdays, you can only comfortably use the equipment between 2-4 PM. Outside of these hours, you're likely to spend a lot of time waiting for machines, which significantly extends your workout and wastes time. Overall, this experience has been disappointing, and I would not recommend Gymbox unless they address these serious issues.

Negative experience: I use to love this place however their head office & policy’s become very fishy if you try and leave / cancel your subscription with valid reasons such as medical issues. Be aware.

Nas Ganev (Nasko) 1 year ago

Negative experience: I’ve been a loyal member of Gymbox at Elephant and Castle since March 2022. I’ve always loved the gym and never missed a payment, despite being on a month-to-month contract that I could have canceled at any time. Unfortunately, my recent experience has left me extremely disappointed. Due to significant financial difficulties, I requested to cancel my membership start of June, 2024, with the hope of rejoining in a few months when my situation improved. Despite following the necessary procedures, Gymbox attempted to charge me £82 in both June and July, even though I clearly communicated that I could not afford the payments and needed to cancel my membership. Fortunately, I managed to stop these charges by canceling my direct debit in time. However, Gymbox is now trying to charge me £117 via debt collectors for a period during which I haven’t used the gym at all. This is incredibly frustrating, especially since I have been a committed member for over two years. According to Citizens Advice, “The Competition and Markets Authority advises that a gym contract is unfair if it doesn’t let a member cancel because they’ve had a change in circumstances which means they can’t afford the membership.” Despite this, Gymbox has failed to acknowledge my situation and continues to pursue these unjustified charges. I’m really disappointed that what was once my favorite gym has become such a source of stress. I hope that Gymbox can address this issue, as this experience is really putting me off from returning.

Negative experience: They are basically entrapping people with their shady contracts and also incompetent staff who cannot even answer basic questions and just get angry and rude. Very poor customer service.

Stefano Da Ponte 1 year ago

Negative experience: I visited the branch as I am considering joining a gym. First impression, just like any other gym, nothing distinguished from far. Weight area over crowded, small, with an unpleasant waiting time. Nothing really was relevant aside other brands. I asked for a joining fee; I mentioned that I was considering other brands, and that I needed to think about it. Two weeks after, the offer was no longer available and they increased by 10% de previous offer. They are just playing around, pay attention to reviews.

Daniella Stanford 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: The best gym! The friendliest reception staff, greeting me on arrival and they are always so happy to help. Amazing classes and enough of them to actually get a chance to book and attend! Superb Trainers, making sure we are all set up and keeping up. Immaculately clean and just a cool environment!

Andrew D 1 year ago

Negative experience: Squat racks area is unusable most of the time I am in the gym, there are some people spending hours there just to pull the weights and drop them from above their heads right next to you, making everything shaking and everyone around uncomfortable . Around 7 o’clock gym become completely full making impossible for you to maintain your workout program. 130£ a month ? No way,if you re bodybuilding focused you can train better even in Pure Gym/The Gym or the other cheap options around.

Saffron Mykels 1 year ago

Negative experience: I really wanted to love it here but honestly wish I’d not bothered, so warning anyone who’s currently weighing up whether they should sign up or not. The lengths of sneakiness that sales/admin go to to obtain and retain as much of your money as they can is crazy. They will then half gaslight you when you call them out! There are SEVERAL gyms in the SE1 area, with two being less than 5 minutes walk from GymBox itself.

Positive experience: Lovely gym! Good energy and vibes. Only downfall is the smell of the showers, it stinks of sewage and the equipment are quite limited!

E A 1 year ago

Positive experience: This gym is really nice! It is well equipped as far as machines and recovery gadgets. I love love love using the sauna! The locker rooms (women specifically, don’t know anything about the men’s) is clean and the showers are also equipped with body wash, and shampoo. Lockers and locks are available. Honestly really nice over all. The price I think is worth it for these reason. Now my least favorite part. It is way too crowded!! Like we’re does anyone workout especially during typical rush hour. The classes I want to take too are offered during the strangest time when most people are at work OR completely booked because it is offered during rush hour and everyone has booked it three days in advance. Ugh. I couldn’t really get a sense of community there sadly. Again it maybe this idea that it’s a great space for working professionals who want to have time to get fit and leave. New gym goers may be a little discouraged but seriously don’t be! The people here are not particularly friendly or unfriendly they just there. So again if you looking for community which can be found in smaller gyms this may not be it. With that said, the staff is friendly they will say hello back to you if you greet them yourself. Pros: equipment, locker room, sauna, staff Cons: crowded, lack of sense of community, classes are always booked or offered at weird times.

Negative experience: Some classes are so loud with instructors shouting in the mics. Have to wear ear plugs. Heard a group of people discussing how bad the sound was after my last class and one saying her ears were ringing.

Tejasvi Lava 1 year ago

Negative experience: The management is horrible. Literally the worst experience I’ve had from all the gyms I’ve visited. When you have an issue they don’t even try to come up with a solution and reluctantly put it off. The reception staff don’t seem to help in any way too. They are mostly rude and clueless. The only nice person you can talk to is Holly! The only advantage is that the gym is well equipped with machines and they have a good number of group classes.

Jesper Liedholm 1 year ago

Positive experience: Good gym, but free weight section is way too small as a proportion to the gym size.

Fantastic experience: I recently visited Gymbox on a day pass and I'm thrilled with my experience. The facilities are excellent, with state-of-the-art equipment and a variety of classes. However, the highlight is the amazing staff, especially the Manager, James Crew. James was incredibly welcoming and helpful taking the time to understand my fitness goals and provided valuable advice as I was returning to training following an injury. I couldn’t recommend Gymbox Elephant & Castle enough to anyone looking for a great place to work out in the area. With welcoming Front of House, caring and knowledgeable Manager, great gym equipment, spacious and well maintained changing facilities and a friendly welcoming atmosphere. I’m looking forward to my next visit and to joining as a Member.

Fantastic experience: Been here almost 2 years now and love this gym! The staff are friendly and approachable, and the general manager has always been especially supportive and helpful :) Great range of equipment and classes and PTs options too.

B Umer 1 year ago

Negative experience: Filthy, stinks and management doesn't care as long as money is coming in. I have been gymbox member since it was opened in 2018. The gym was clean, looked after and members feedback was taken on board. Since past 2 years, I noticed the new gym members don't abide by the gym rules, in fact they never read it. Equipment is dirty, members who are sick cough around like they were never taught manners. Bathroom specially showers stink like someone is using them like toilets, than the showers. The water taps run cold, out of 10 shower cabins only 5 of them work fine. The management seems to be sleeping, the manager specially hides in his cabin and despite writing to him 3 times and raising a complaint, you will never see his face out on the floor. The receptionist will always tell you either the manager is not in today or he is busy... so you know what it means. Gymbox is happy to charge a £90 or more per month. But you will find the GymGroup or other local gyms still cleaner than the gymbox. "They never force the gym etiquettes and rules on the members, so members can do whatever they feel like". Use it as its their personal gym rather than having consideration of other gym members. If I could give this Zero star I would have. Its gym's responsibility to ensure the rules are followed, you will see tapes wrapped on the bars and equipment which looks terrible and dirty. Despite cleaning equipment being available, you will still end up taking some illness and disease with you.

Negative experience: Paying £72 every month as a sixthform student and not allowed to use the boxing stage? That’s ridiculous. If customers are not allowed to use it, why is it there???

J L 1 year ago

Positive experience: It's a great gym with good atmosphere and I love the Olympic track. Unfortunately most people think that the Olympic track is there for them to stretch or do pushups making it impossible to use it for things like sleds, farmer walks , sprints and anything that specifically requires a track. Pushups, ab crunches and any type of stationary things people do there - they can do literally anywhere else in the gym - yet choose to occupy half the track making it useless for what it was built for - Gymbox - please could you address this? I have spoken to many, many memebers who are sick and tired always having to tell people to do their biceps curls elsewhere. If I could take the sled and drag it somewhere else but the Olympic track is the only place for this. The music - yes it is mostly pretty terrible everyone has their own taste bit one thing I think most people would agree on is the volume of the music in the changing rooms. Why does it have to be 5am techno club sound volumes in a place where people are trying to wind down from a workout? Not all the DJs do it but a few - particularly tbe bad ones - seem to love blowing everyone's eardrums into pieces whilst they are trying to chill in the sauna or even the shower. How about some soothing chill music on normal volume in the changing room and you can go all blast on the gym floor? I know it can be done because some DJs seem to be aware that no one needs pumping house blaring them into motivation when they in fact are just changing their clothes and the volume is tolerable.

Negative experience: went with a friend on a guestpass... they made me give them enough data to open a bank account (passport/driving license, DOB, Phone number, email, address, etc.) then proceeded to call me, text me email me and everything else for months despite my requesting several times to have my data deleted.

A R 1 year ago

Positive experience: It’s an okay gym, a little bit overpriced for what you get. CONS - before and after work is too busy and not enough equipment, there is space to put more benches - classes are take on the gym floor so even less space - I use sauna pretty much every time I go to the gym, and half of the time is not even hot - male locker room (and sauna) feels and smells dirty (I do see the staff cleaning all the time, but it still feels like it hasn’t been clean) - why are there only two cable machines? every time I want to use it I need to queue for it. There is space to put another one! PROS - vibe is pretty nice - any class that I’ve been to has been really good! (few bike and beats were a bit off, instructor off the bike for the whole class!?!?) - towels, showers, sauna - nice aesthetics - staff is very nice It feels like the gym is badly designed as there is more space for free weights, cable machines. Male locker room needs a refurb, it just smells bad all the time (even that I see cleaners all the time). And fix the heating with the sauna!! I don’t think it is really worth the price, and it feels like a cult

Amarvir Sandhu 1 year ago

Negative experience: Was a gym member for 2 years as was it was a convenient location. However if visiting in the morning or after work, gym is very busy. This wouldn’t be so bad if the actual weights area was bigger - it’s far too small and cramped given the size of the overall gym. Feels like a lot of wasted space. Also a lot of classes are being held on the actual gym floor rather than in the designated class area - this means less space to train which is annoying. It’s a decent gym if you live closeby and can visit during work hours - otherwise it’s quite expensive for what it is.

Eden House 1 year ago

Negative experience: The receptionists are quite rude at times and cleaner will make you stop your sets/reps to clean around you. I understand you want to keep the gym tidy and clean but maybe wait until my sets are finished? Asking for a towel is weird because they are supposed to be for your use but they always give you a side eye when you ask for one or two... bare in mind I pay more than £90 a month.

Remy Martyn 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Huge gym with the best equipment and great range of fitness classes. Gymbox never disappoints!

Valerio Lauri 1 year ago

Negative experience: Structure and equipment are great but often music is too loud and results impossible listening our own music playing with earbuds. I never saw gymbox staff takes care about it. One day, our BJJ teacher asked them to set a little down the music, they simply didn't care. Pretty busy all week long, even during weekend. The most annoying thing was probably off-shift PTs holding machines and equipments for over 20/30minutes just to make videos of themself with smartphones, cameras and tripods to post on social media and promote their business. I don't think is fair, especially from local staff. Unless because they offer various classes as well, I don't think they worth 150£ per month, really.

Robert Adamson 1 year ago

Negative experience: Not a fan of the gym spray painting their logo on pavements, a cheap attempt at marketing that brings down the local aesthetics

B.J.S 1 year ago

Positive experience: Nice gym, great equipment, gay friendly, but I have no idea why the toilets always stink? Are the drains bad around elephant and castle?

George Michalowski Junior 1 year ago

Negative experience: I was paying a pretty high price and the quality doesn’t compare to cheaper gyms. The equipment and facilities just aren't what I expected for the price. I'd like to point out however, this issue is more specific to the Elephant and Castle branch. - The issue starts with the gym opening late, the correct time is 6:00 and it ends up opening later. It might not seem like a big deal, but it's annoying, especially when it's cold or raining outside. - Then the air conditioning isn't great. It often feels too hot, almost like a sauna. A more consistent temperature would be nice. - The music is always extremely loud, which doesn't make sense because most of us have our earphones in trying to listen to our own stuff. It just adds to the noise (and chaos). - For a few days we even got the great sewage aroma. By then, the workout hasn’t even started and it’s already a bad experience. - In terms of the workout, the gym feels too crowded most of the time, and there's never enough equipment, especially for leg workouts, and the area for weights is really cramped. It's frustrating not to have what you need and even when it's not super busy, I find myself waiting for machines or weights. - If the gym didn’t have space it would be fine, but there's a lot of empty space that's not being used well. It could be organised way better. Honestly, the only reason I continued going for as long as I did was the PTs and the quality of the showers/towels. Though the price x quality wasn’t there and I felt scammed. The gym has this upscale look but the actual experience doesn't match up. It feels like I'm paying for the look rather than the quality. It's clearly the owner(s) being stingy and not wanting to elevate the quality to obtain a significant profit.

muscle69 1 year ago

Negative experience: This gym is hugely overcrowded and under-equipped. The weight areas are often packed to the point where it's impossible to properly work out. There's very limited leg equipment and not enough pin or plate-loaded machines for other body parts. The endless functional training spaces frequently sit empty while people desperately wait turns for the traditional workout equipment. The gym is large enough to install much more kit, which at least would bring this branch in line with other Gymbox branches such as Bank or Farringdon which have almost double the amount. Classes are impossible to book with such high demand. The loud, blaring music adds to the chaos, especially at peak hour when they often have an DJ, even though most of the membership is wearing AirPods and trying to listen to their own music. For the premium price, facilities and equipment are sorely lacking. Management is well aware of these significant issues from endless member complaints and reviews, yet does nothing to rectify the problems. An endless frustration rather than a place to productively train.

Alejandra Gonzalez 1 year ago

Negative experience: The gym is amazing but it doesn’t matter because is always packed and there is no space neither enough equipment. The staff at the reception are not at all helpful and the membership terms are not customer friendly. I would expect more for what it cost, it’s just a fancier pure gym

James Foster 1 year ago

Negative experience: Weightlifting area far too small and has a lack of equipment which is also poorly maintained. It is always really crowded and impossible to train. Sauna was broken for over a month at one point. Tried to cancel membership wouldn’t let me was contacting my bank trying to forcibly take my money. Eventually I was able to cancel after about a dozen emails and multiple phone calls. Have since signed up to TheGym which is much better.

Fantastic experience: Great gym! The staff is very welcoming and helpful. Peter has been attentive ever since I signed up, in order to make sure I feel comfortable in this place. The classes are amazing, and there’s an atmosphere of motivation as soon as you step into the gym. It’s worth it for the price you have to pay! : )

Joe Sandell 1 year ago

Positive experience: The gym itself is amazing, in terms of equipment, hygiene and classes. It is also very aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The only issue I had as being a straight male is that the gym itself is quite gay based and some members are quite predatory, and therefore I experienced a couple of uncomfortable moments. I decided to cancel my membership because of this ,even though I had already signed a contract for a few months in advance. I sought help from a member of staff as I knew it would be difficult to get a refund, a big thank you to Peter who went out of his own way to help when it came to this situation, he was very professional and friendly, took the matter seriously and dealt with it as soon as possible in order to help me. Big thanks to Peter!

Aaron Strachan 1 year ago

Negative experience: Yet again, the gym is too hot and stuffy! Not ideal going into a warm summer! AC never seems to work - despite asking several times to get it looked into there always seem be the same responses with no actual rectification. Today the free weight area reached 23.3*degrees - even with the AC set to high - which is totally unacceptable. Despite getting staff to look into this - it continued to climb until reaching a very uncomfortable 24* degrees! The whole gym floor was similar. Please get this rectified ASAP, and perhaps focus more on looking after your current members.

Positive experience: Pro: Large area, great classes, boxing facilities, sauna, very clean, lots of racks and friendly people. Downsides: classes are difficult to book due to high-demand & (overly) busy during peak-hours

Fantastic experience: Amazing settings!! Great staff!! Peter has been so helpful from start to finish. He explained everything and made me feel welcome before I’d even completed my sign up. Having come from a tiny gym I was quite nervous about stepping into such a huge gym but the blonde guy with glasses at the reception was extremely helpful. Genuinely think I’ve found my second home :)

Tynan Stanyer 2 years ago

Negative experience: Partner cancelled membership and confirmed if anything was outstanding. They advised they don’t know. Next thing we get is a legal letter from a debt collector for over £200 for a months membership. Gymbox have made no attempt to contact us nor told us anything was outstanding. Horrendous way to treat a customer. My guess is they just sell off the debt cheaply and don’t care about the customer as they are leaving. Have cancelled my membership as a result too now. Be careful.

Fantastic experience: Great gym. I’ve tried a few before, but haven’t found one as motivating and great energy as Gymbox Elephant and Castle. Staff are exceptionally chill, and the VPT expertise incredible. The gym gets quite busy but always somewhere to work a sweat!

Minglan Xu 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Peter is such a nice and patient staff that he introduced us all of the amazing facilities in the gyms, we joined

Tsepo Serakalala 2 years ago

Negative experience: Cool gym and well located, but be aware of the following: 1. floor space is poorly utilised - weights area feels cramped and could be expanded given how busy it gets. Lots of "dead" or underutilised space that could be used to alleviate congestion. 2. Equipment quality is pretty average. But bigger issue is that they take forever to fix things when broken - in some cases things will be out of order for months. 3. Sometimes there are random "classes" that aren't on the timetable that are highly disruptive to the rest of the club - eg dance classes (not open to members) in the studio where music is played at hazardous volumes (so loud that the ground shakes). 4. Staff is overall great but some generally don't seem bothered when you report issues or try to make them aware of things. 5. The AC is inconsistent. The club sometimes feels like a sauna - not sure if its an "energy saving" setting or faulty control, but there are times when the AC works and times when it just feels like you're in a funky, tropical marsh

Positive experience: This is the closest gym to my house, so it was a natural choice for me to join, but here's why I didn't (this is my experience, and my opinion): You're expected to join without trying the gym first, if you want to try it, you can pay for a £20 day pass which they will take off your joining fee. To get the day pass online you need to fill in all your personal details. When I arrived, I then had to fill in all those details again on a sheet of paper. That was mildly irking. Then I was sent in, no mention of anywhere I couldn't use, or if towels were included or not (as a result I didn't take a towel). I was then trying different machines, and while on the treadmill, I was told by a trainer that was being used by a class and I had to get off. There was no sign or anything to say this before I got on, and it was not inside the studio. In the defence of the trainer, he was very polite, and as soon as the class was over, he came and found me to say I could use it now. What bothers me is how was I to know it was being used by a class in the next room? I was then phoned a week later to ask if I'd like to join. I expected more from a Gymbox, and so did not join.

Fantastic experience: It’s a great gym and it has all the equipments I need. Very friendly staff and hardworking cleaners. It’s my favourite gym!

Ryan Samuels 2 years ago

Positive experience: Excellent spin classes (Jenny's class is honestly flawless). Enough space and kit when I train (7:00am) in order to do my crossfit workouts. The only thing which could be better is the air conditioning system - it can get a bit hot if it's busy.

David Moore 2 years ago

Positive experience: Good gym with nice vibe but since Covid has become more and more over crowded and the central use of the gym is the weights are which is underserved by insufficient equipment (particularly cables). Main critism I have is the poor air conditioning - becoming more and more like working out in a sauna!

Fantastic experience: The best gym community, great equipment and classes you will EVER find ❤️ helpful approachable coaches & staff, great music (especially appreciative of the techno) gym with a soul and personal style

Negative experience: I’m a member for about over year and a half, and must say it’s getting worse.. I’m a bit disappointed , I’m still waiting for PT session what was promised during signing contract , when you have problem they always say to send them email about it and they never reply, they take the money and don’t care about you… I used to love classes because PT was super friendly and full of energy and give you this power during the class -well it’s not like this anymore classes start to be boring .. sadly but I’m thinking to find different gym ( it’s not same gym what was when I join)

Fantastic experience: One of the best gym that I have ever been to. Fantastic facilities and very helpful staff. They even have a sauna in here! I would really recommend the endurance classes here, they are an absolute hard work!

Negative experience: I was a huge gymbox fan after being a member of the Victoria site for just over a year, then switched to the Elephant and Castle branch. Where the Victoria one had excellent quality classes, a small but friendly atmosphere and great instructors, the elephant and castle gym has none of this. At peak times the gym is super busy and the weights section is far too small, with people having to wait around to use any equipment, easily adding 20 or 30 minutes onto your workout. The classes are so so. The yoga is good, but the WOD squad / crossfit style classes and spin classes are pretty poor. Whereas these classes were great quality at Victoria, the Rig area at E&C is no way big enough for an enjoyable class. The spin studio has had broken aircon for months, leading to dangerously hot classes with instructors who are samey and shout a lot. Shouting at your class isn't encouraging them, please learn the difference. If I wanted an overly hot, samey spin class, I would go to puregym. The DJ also plays some criminal mashups and mixes, which would get them removed from any club or bar job.... Overall, you can get much better for your money elsewhere. I'm taking my money to Fitness First for a better experience. Gymbox - please take a hard look at the E&C gym.

Negative experience: Specifically on the Bike and Beats class. Historically Power Battle used to run which was amazing to actually focus on performance and the classes were incredibly coached, as a keen cyclist I was really disappointed to see them pulled from the timetable. Bike and Beats remains which is fine, quite gimmicky and so much ridiculous up/down/side to side. Some brilliant instructors can make it good but I can only think of a few and clearly most feel the same as their classes are hard to get onto! However, Florin in particular seems incredibly inexperienced and erratic, no experience and rarely on the bike himself so keeps telling you to keep going and you feel like you will pass out (I workout or spin a lot so I'm fit and even I find it unbearable, let alone new members!) And Sebastian also doesn't make you feel particularly comfortable. Highly recommend Jenny and Lois (victoria branch!) .

Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member of GymBox for years, but the E&C one definitely stands out! The classes and the music are always great and motivating, and the staff is super kind also. In particular, Dylan GG, who has always been a kind, friendly face in the gym and willing to help both newbies and veterans! Thank you for everything xx

Fantastic experience: Great gym and amazing atmosphere! I got signed up by Dylan, he was attentive and a great sales assistant. Would highly recommend joining this gym if you want to be around motivated people and smiley staff. A brilliant selection of all different types of fitness classes and always have good music whilst working out.

Fantastic experience: The place is a Vibe and the sense of community is at another level. Thanks to Dylan G for sorting out all the paperwork and making me feel welcome from day one at the gym. I have been from one gym to another one and have never found a place like this one.

Fantastic experience: Dylan (GG) from the first day I arrived at GB, he made me feel comfortable and welcome, I was feeling too old to be there but with his encouragement, his politeness and his support, it made me want to continue going to the gym. Very good customer service!!

Fantastic experience: My fav gym! I really love the facilities and the variety of classes GymBox provides! I had a hard time at the start, but Dylan (GG) helped me navigate the gym when I was just starting weight training. Dylan is always there to help whenever I'm struggling/ need specific assistance etc. Gymbox truly is a welcoming environment, very clean and highly motivational.

Fantastic experience: Great gym. It can get really busy at peak hours, but so can any gym really. The best part of it are the staff, they are really easy going and welcoming. One of the staffs who’s now a friend of mine Dylan GG always makes sure everyone’s in a good mood before their workout and constantly spreads laughter and joy.

Negative experience: Equipment and space is good, but you can hardly use the gym if you go after work as it’s always over capacity Music is too loud which others have mentioned

Positive experience: Great classes and equipment! It can get busy but there’s enough space to train. I wish they’d change the soap in the shower, the one they use feels cheap.

Tobi Farore 2 years ago

Negative experience: I visited gymbox Elephant & castle as a guest and really enjoyed my time there and before leaving I wanted to enquire about how to register to the gym. Someone from the sales team (Lucy) spoke to me and asked me my age and whether I was a student and I clearly stated I was not a student and I was 27. She proceeded to tell me about the student discount and how she was happy to apply it on my account (WITHOUT ME REQUESTING) and gave me her card to contact her if I wanted to proceed. I ended up signing up in person and the link she emailed me didn’t work, lucy proceeded to set up the app on my phone for me, after signing up she requested I email her a picture (like a passport photo) she can use to apply the student discount onto my account, which I did. I attended the gym a few times after signing up and I had to go to front desk to be let into the gym. Each time I’d call Lucy and/or email her to find out whether this “discount” had been applied. After the first time I had to go to the front desk to be let into the gym, my anxiety towards attending gym begun increasing (as I’m diagnosed with a complex mental health disorder). Every time I couldn’t get into the gym or wouldn’t get a reply from Lucy, my anxiety towards attending the gym intensified. I’m now very uncomfortable returning to the elephant and castle gymbox. I could have afforded a normal membership because I was already aware of the price from the person who invited me as a guest. I honestly just thought I was lucky that the sales person was going to give me a discount. Even if my account is cleared and I am aware to attend the gym with any issues, i honestly developed crippling anxiety towards the gym I’m not able to return. I just don’t understand why Lucy felt the need to do this, ruined my gym experience for what? A sale bonus and she would’ve gotten anyways because I WAS PREPARED to sign up regardless of the cost. This is all very shady and fraudulent which has greatly impacted me. I hope this is seen by the right person and escalated so accurate training can be provided to staff to avoid someone’s gym experience to be ruined

Hi Tobi, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We welcome all feedback and appreciate you coming forward to us in this instance to avoid this reoccurring in future to other members. We apologise that this has effected your mental health. We can see that you have been in conversation with someone from our Member Services Team and a student discount was previously applied using a UniDays Graduate Student ID. However, we can confirm your account has now been cancelled immediately with no further payments required, as requested. We appreciate this situation has adjusted your views on coming to our club, but please don't be deterred if you do have goals to get into the gym. If you would like to return to us as a member, we would love to welcome you back to our gyms. You are of course more than welcome to stay with us and we can also look into changing your home club if Elephant & Castle no longer feels comfortable for you, given your anxieties & mental health. Please feel free to get back in touch with us via our Member Services Team should you change your mind or have any further queries. As a brand, we always strive to give 100% of our members a pleasant, stress-free experience and once again, please accept our sincerest apologies for any negative affects this has caused for you. Positive experience: It is clearly not well enough equipped for the amount of crowds it gets. Unless you go between between 10-12 or 1-4pm, your workout will be killed by wait times. The main pressure points are not enough benches and not enough cable stacks (the Farringdon branch has two, and this only has one). Lots of good atmosphere and very clean etc. Equipment is high quality but not enough of it

Fantastic experience: I popped in with a Day Pass last week while I was in the area. Pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness of the locker rooms! Usually other gym members make it quite stuffy and stinky but this one was definitely nice. Good vibe in the gym. Would consider signing up when I move closer

Medi Harsini 2 years ago

Negative experience: The worst gymbox ever, rude admin staff, messy gym, rude and arrogant members! Avoid at all costs. Farringdon and Ealing are the only well managed gymbox

Ken Liu 2 years ago

Positive experience: One of the better equipped gyms in the area and if you're a group member, one of the best gyms in the Gymbox chain. Great view out over London too, if you're busy bicep curling as well. As I've reached that age where I tend to listen to radio 4, the music is loud - unpleasantly so, so if you too are old and grumpy, remember to pack some ANC headphones Sounding like the grumpy old git I am, I remember when people actually work out at a gym. Unfortunately, if you're there to you know, actually train, you'll have to deal with the horde of wannabe influencers and negotiate your way round tripods, cameras and people flexing. Adds variety to your warm up I guess.

Neil R 2 years ago

Positive experience: It’s a great space with some fantastic PT’s and the atmosphere is unreal. However they need MUCH more ‘traditional equipment, from machines to benches and in particular the pulley machines. Wait times have ruined several works outs. There’s an abundance of space for more equipment. Sadly if this doesn’t happen very soon I and many others will be leaving

Iro Konstantinou 2 years ago

Negative experience: Friendly reception staff and mostly clean space. However, if you want to have a membership that gives you access to classes this is not it. Unless you book a week in advance there is no way you can get a booking. Even if you go on the waitlist, it is NOT happening. Was looking forward to trying different classes but impossible to book unless you have reminders etc etc which is extremely boring.

Mark St.Andrew 2 years ago

Negative experience: At peak times, this place is horrendous. For such a massive gym, there actually not that much kit or that many benches. I've given up and gone home a few times... Which is pretty poor considering this is £100+/month. Edit: had enough. Classes impossible to book. There's nowhere near enough kit for peak times - you'll spend most of your workout waiting around. The place is filthy, it's not worth the money. Staff are clearly having a great time messing about and chatting behind reception while the gyms a tip. The Covent garden branch is slightly better, but still not worth the money. Quit my membership.

Negative experience: Predatory and dishonest scam pricing. I was told I could sign up for a student pricing for 60£ a month no introductory fee or anything after a first month free. When the first bill comes around it is 75£. With cost of living increasing as a student I could no longer afford a membership so I tried to cancel. When I ask to cancel on the 3rd month they said I could early terminate but for 180£ upfront. While crying inside, I paid it and was assured by staff 3 times before leaving I would never have to pay another pence going forward. Today I have gotten another bill for another 75£ and the threat of debt collectors calling.

Positive experience: 09/01/2024 UPDATE: All the points below still apply but to add on just incase I haven’t done already. Somewhere from the ceiling, water droplets. Not a lot but I’ve had it drop on my head and shoulder. I’m not the only person who has complained about it. Also P.Ts have too and nothing has been done about it. Who knows what that water is or where it’s coming from.. The gym itself can be really crowded at times. Even during covid there measures in place weren’t reinforced ‍♂️. People still don’t put their weights back or what they’ve used. There should be staff at the reception at all times plus always staff patrolling the gym floor. Just to catch those people who don’t put what they use back! UPDATED REVIEW 2023 DECEMBER - staff are friendly and sociable - couldn’t complain about the equipment as there is just enough and if you know what you’re doing you wouldn’t need to complain have having more equipment. - barbells for everyone. Being a powerlifter, they have 2 power lifting bars but people keep ruining them with liquid chalk - no one cleans their bars after using them but then again this is a commercial gym so don’t expect any gym etiquette or anything like that - too many brainless zombies here who don’t understand that people need space to train. Especially on the platforms where people are squating, benching, cross fitters doing snatch’s and all sorts. That just put themselves in danger ! - the gym itself is very nice and spacious with decent facilities and rooms. - the lifting platforms have somewhat of a dip to separate it but they do not have barriers which means these brainless zombies just walk across likes there’s red carpet or zebra crossing!! There are these pull-out barriers you can put but there aren’t enough in the gym to use for the platforms as when there are classes. The Coachs take them all pretty much which means everyone that is a ‘serious lifter’ have to deal with these zombies and tell them off for crossing in such a bad manner! OVERALL Decent gym but bad people. I don’t blame the sales gurus for signing up these type of people because they have targets. BUT with that being said I do expect them to atleast make them understand gym the etiquette atleast. Cause in the end they’ll only put themselves in danger.

Positive experience: Decent gym with the usual equipment. Some old. Can be very crowded with classes happening on the floor. Music is terrible and VERY loud even if you have your own headphones in you can still hear it.

Anna Miller 2 years ago

Positive experience: GYMBOX E&C is the biggest club they have. It’s like a hive when you walk in, so many people doing their workouts. Don’t be intimidated, most people are just in their own lane. They have a DJ on hand most evenings. The classes are really well done, and the teachers are great. They are often difficult to get a spot in, so book early. The locker rooms are large, have good showers, and the women’s has a sauna .

Fantastic experience: Excitement facilitates at this gym, very pleasant staff. One particular member of staff Lucy was very approachable and more than happy to help. Very impressed with the knowledge and enthusiasm.

R D 3 years ago

Positive experience: I was excited to visit a different gymbox especially as I was told by the front desk that it was a similar size to farringdon, so I definitely expected something amazing. Sadly this branch fell short for me. I found the gym to be very cramped especially the machine/ free weights area. On top of this the gym was extremely busy and despite the responsibility for weights to be put back by the members, there was not one member of staff visible let alone tidying throughout the time I was there. Zero organisation in relation to the cable attachments, just scattered around the area. Female changing rooms were overall okay, besides discarded hair all over the floor and one toilet full of poo . When departing, zero acknowledgement from the reception staff which is a shame as their other branches have improved on this. Probably would not return when considering the other great branches around.

Karun Vinayagam 3 years ago

Negative experience: Staff was confused if Gympass members could access the gym or not, after a lot of back and fourth they let me in. Hope management informs the staff adequately about the various partnerships and memberships the Gym has to avoid such issues. Also lost my shoes while visiting this gym, could not get a locker key from the reception as well. So clearly not a safe gym for your belongings.

Positive experience: Please note: the 3 stars are related ONLY to the floor set-up (machines/weights etc.). I am massively enjoying the other aspects of the gym, such as the broad range of Aerial/Pole classes. The free weights/benches/weighted machines area is a mess. It does really needs to be re-arranged, as there is no space, you need to keep moving around for people passing through. It is just too cramped to be safe. Also: other members keep leaving weights around. This isn't only a safety issue; I personally really struggle to move around heavy weights and to unload equipment that was previously used by a far more advanced/strong user than me. It would be good to see staff members going around checking on the situation and reminding people not to leave their equipment around. Also, the Kneeling leg curl machine is literally in front of what I can remember being a Chest Press machine. This can make female users feel on the spot.

Alex W 3 years ago

Negative experience: Visited today on a guest pass. The space is lovely, but I will never come back for 3 reasons: 1) tiny dumbbell area and general dearth of upper body machines (esp cable machines); 2) no mirrors in the barbell area, probably a personal preference, but they do help; 3) weird machine selection. Disappointed, considering the price.

Adnaan Martin-Shaikh 3 years ago

Positive experience: Been here a few months and absolutely love it! Great energy, friendly PT’s and front desk team. As most gyms, the 6-9pm hours are busy but that’s the norm with every gym. The only feedback would be to have better control on the volume of music at the gym. Noice cancelling headphones are kinda pointless and not everyone enjoys working out with music as loud as the clubs in Ibiza or Madrid
