Casual hotel offering free Wi-Fi & parking, plus a restaurant, a gym & an indoor pool.

Our comment from FitFit UK about Grand Hotel Sunderland:

The Grand Hotel Sunderland offers a prime location right on the coast, providing guests with beautiful sea views and easy access to nearby beaches. Many visitors have praised the hotel for its friendly and accommodating staff, spacious rooms, and good value for money. Various amenities are available, including a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and gym, which many guests appreciated as a bonus to their stay. The spacious family rooms come equipped with comfortable beds, large TVs, and complimentary toiletries to enhance your experience.

However, there are also some areas that could use improvement. Some guests have reported issues with cleanliness in certain facilities and inconsistent service quality at the restaurant. Breakfast options have been critiqued for being limited or not filling enough, and there were a few mentions of difficulties with customer service follow-ups. Other guests experienced problems with noise and temperature control in their rooms, suggesting the need for maintenance in some areas.

In summary, the Grand Hotel Sunderland is a lovely venue that boasts impressive amenities and an ideal location, but attention to detail in service and maintenance would greatly enhance the overall guest experience.

Positive experience: What a great hotel but cold!!

Negative experience: Very disappointed with the customer service of this hotel after my stay. We stayed for one night, and I enjoyed my stay, reception staff were very friendly and the rooms were nice enough - basic but nice. The next day within hours of leaving, I noticed I had come out in a rash/small bites. When I went to the pharmacy to see what it could be they said this is bites, possible bed bugs - when I have emailed the hotel and tried to rectify the issue, they said they would conduct an investigation and keep me updated. Obviously their findings is that there is no bed bugs and I will not be offered a refund. For me as a guest I would have expected to see that investigated and a proper conversation with the manager. I offered to send the images of my arms twice and both times there was zero response. I will be escalating this higher. Very disappointing as I really enjoyed my stay.

Negative experience: The breakfast was cold and there was nothing left by half 8 the rooms were okay but the sofa bed had a stain on, the service was horrible as theres a language barrier with majoruty of the staff, its overly expensive especally for such bad food and most importantly the cleaning manager "Karen" was rude uptight and was not sypathetic at all towards my mum after she said we are on holiday to celabrate a year from my nans death aneversery and all she had to say to that was "well thats not my issue" she was also rude to my stepdad not letting him talk and just walking away when he spoke so ide leave the lowest possible reveiw i could for this hotel as it ruined the holiday and she needs to be fired for such poor service. Also when we booked on booking.com it said the hotel was pet freindly however when got there we had our rooms changeddue to habing dogs to two separate rooms 2 floors apart one being a familiy room and on a double room which cost another £200 nevermind rhe additional £60 for the dogs for two nights for the cleaning bill and £50 just for having the dogs in a dog freindly hotel which makes no sence, in conclusion the hotel layout was horrible the rooms where unclean the sevice was rude and unfreindly and the food was all gone 0.0/10 would not recomend to anyone

Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel. Friendly helpful staff. Great location. Free parking. Free use of leisure facilities including swimming pool, sauna, steam room and gym. Our room was a family room (with a sea view), on the first floor, and it was huge. We had two large double beds at one end of the room and a sitting area at the other end with a comfortable sofa and large screen tv (with free view) on the wall. There was also another large screen tv opposite the beds for watching from bed too. Bathroom had a bath and separate shower cubicle. There were also tissues and complimentary toiletries provided too. Facilities in room included a safe, iron and ironing board, a fan and three electric plug in heaters - which we didn’t need because the hotel’s central heating kept the room nice and cosy by itself. There was a desk and chair too and a kettle and tea/coffee/biscuits. The beds were really comfy and we slept very well each night. There was no noise from inside or outside the hotel to bother us. Great blackout curtains too meant our room was nice and dark. We can’t comment on the breakfast as we don’t eat breakfast and the evening restaurant was an “Asian Fusion” restaurant which we didn’t fancy. We really enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel and hope to stay again in the future.

Fantastic experience: Attended a event held at the hotel it had no disabled facilities to speak of ,it had one toilet cubicle with hand rails, sink and dryer. Wouldn't fit a wheelchair in and carer . Disappointed

Fantastic experience: Great night at a private function I fully enjoyed my meal and the service but a few were saying that their chicken was too firm.

James Widdowson 11 months ago

Negative experience: Massive let down. Main issue was the room: freezing cold - on the floor directly above the covered car park. Clearly no heating in it when unoccupied and the system could not get it to a comfortable state throughout my stay. None of heat generated appeared to go to bathroom. Also in this wing of the hotel above the car park, the walls do not provide credible sound insulation. Not pleasant if you know what I mean. I mentioned both these factors upon check out and was not offered any incentive to return again. The leisure facilities would be nice if they weren't crammed full of non-residents, (I appreciate the economic impetus to open to the community, however there is no peace and quiet, particularly in the wellness rooms, and it's too small to cope with a modest hotel resident demand). So if you're tempted here by the facilities, it's not worth it. If you do find a bargain for the date you want to book, I recommend you phone them up and check you won't end up in the wing above the car park. There maybe better rooms. Two stars overall thanks to location.

Negative experience: I booked for a day using the gym/pool/sauna and then afternoon tea. The lady with short hair wasn't very polite. The cleanliness not so good. The only thing they cleaned when we spend three hours to the gym/pool and sauna was the windows outside from the gym room. The tiles in the wet room were dirty nobody went in to wipe them and they need some work or replace actually. Also in sauna you could see like a gap short door with shoes and dirty things. The place is shabby, wasn't clean they need a good cleaner. The afternoon tea was funny we went and I was trying to explain we would prefer vegetarian my friend is vegetarian and the lady she grabbed the plate and said you should let us know earlier. When they contacted me via email asking for what time we will use gym/pool and afternoon tea never asked our preference. She didn't stay to listen to us or let us reply grabbed the plate with the sandwiches and brought out egg sandwiches only and five little ones. That was very weird and not polite at all.

Positive experience: Grand Hotel for a Mam + Daughters Spa and afternoon tea day. Excellent. So friendly, so helpful. Great Spa area - pool, sauna, steam room + gym. THEN afternoon tea - OMW - so fresh. The plain scone ( for the ham and cream) was absolutely delicious. The young lady who served us was lovely. Food was fresh - served so beautifully. Two great tea-pots of tea too. What a great few hours in a fab place with delicious food.

Negative experience: One thing good about hotel is location rest is horrible... old hotel far from picture which are here on Google maps ... just proper scam with pictures... old hotel. Room to hot my room wasn't fully clean and breakfast was much to choose from... hotel was maybe good in 1959 but not is it old hotel which could have some renovation... spa side wasn't that good to acceptable... rooms were to hot and old bed wasn't comfy at all ..very disappointed like I said location was only good thing that's all

Positive experience: Great location. Our room was well -equipped with everything you could want at a hotel - even a trouser press! The hotel, away from the ground floor, is dated. The stairwell carpet is worn on the leading edges on many steps and the decor of upper floors is in need of an update. Free WiFi and car-parking is wonderful. I hate hotels that nickel and dime these things! Breakfast was limited. If you are allocated room 205...ask for a move! There's a vent from the kitchen that starts up at around 6:00 am and rattles your frosted windows!

Negative experience: Absolute hole of a hotel, there appeared to be some stains on the furniture that I can only describe as a “human deposit” holes in the bed sheets and tbh for what it was it was massively overpriced, won’t be using this chain of hotels ever again.

Positive experience: Check in time was 16:00 and check out time was 10:00 following day. Our room was.too dark. Yiu need to ask housekeeping for drinking water, lift was not working. We where put in a 3rd floor. Prices where a bit questionable thou. I paid about £89 for the night. While a friend of mine who booked in a different site paid £52/night. Its ridiculous thou. They got there own parking which is good. The shoreline is juts across the road. Which was really great!

Fantastic experience: Stayed at the grand hotel for 1 night on 1 june 24. When we went to a show at the sunderland empire. What a fantastic hotel. Spotlessly clean. Lots of parking onsite free or roadside for free. Staff where superb. Fantastic dining are and bar lounge overlooking the sea. If youve only ever thought of sunderlands as a inner city then this area of roker/ seaburn/ whitburn and up to south shields are worlds apart from what is 2 miles inland. With its Long sandy beaches/ seafront bars and restaurants!!!We paid £80 for a twin room which was amazing value

Fantastic experience: Yet again another great visit to the Grand hotel chain . This time we are in Sunderland. A non tourist seaside town. With plenty of parking and great beaches. Loads of fantastic restaurants. This is a working fishing town so the fish is very fresh and great value. A bit of a hidden gem.

Positive experience: Used this hotel as a stay for an event at the stack. Was very disappointed in the smell of weed as you got in the corridors to go to our room.the carpets were worn and shabby. What a disgrace this lovely hotel as come to this. And as for the breakfast, how can people be charged £13 for this. Sausages looked nice but tasteless. The bacon dish was empty for half an hour, black pudding was dried out.there was a very poor looking selection of fruit and only 1 flavoured yoghurt toffee and the coffee tasted like I was drinking out of an ashtray. Room was a fair price but I'd avoid this place and pay a little extra for the roker hotel or seaburn Inn.

Negative experience: Booked room when i got to hotel .Not the most enthusiastic staff member. Had to get up around 12 at night because of the noise in the room next door. Different staff member on reception this time .I had rang him from room an he moved me to a sea front room which was very nice. He gave me a voucher for a free breakfast as this is only between 7 and 9 am and slept in because of late night missed breakfast slot . They do breakfast baps on leaving i asked about voucher morning reception staff would not honour this .terrible attitude to customers while i was waiting at reception no morning room service for breakfasts delivered to your room which you would expect from a 4 star hotel

Fantastic experience: Right opposite the beach, dog friendly rooms available, Ours was huge. A small dog friendly area by the restaurant area if you don't wish to leave your dog in the room. Small car park which you have to register your reg on the machine at the check in desk. Swimming pool available throughout the day except Monday mornings and the last hour of the day is adult only.

Positive experience: Great architecture, although the building is a little tired now. Great art deco decore, great staff, nice spa facilities (pool) It just needs a little tlc... Caulking, grout, paint etc but clean and a nice break. Breakfast was mediocre at best... Soggy eggs and constantly running out of items. I'm not a fan of buffets...

Fantastic experience: Spa as part of room rate which is absolutely great. Nice location. Breakfast was good.

Martin Hramiak 2 years ago

Negative experience: We used to love this hotel but now it is feeling really tired. Cost cutting is the order of the day. Entrance to the pool can be a little fascist. My wife was forced to sit and wait for another member of staff before she was allowed to enter the pool, despite having her hotel key to hand. We wanted our room cleaned during our multi night stay but staff were resistant to this. If a client pays the same for each of 3 nights as a 1 night stay then clean the room if required.

Positive experience: Stayed in the hotel for 1 night and glad not for two, the room was big with very tiny bed which wasn’t comfortable at all, the man on reception is so not friendly and arrogant don’t know why as we been so nice to him, the location is amazing with beautiful sea side

Fantastic experience: Came here with the family for Sunday lunch which is very well presented, fresh and quite substantial. The hotel and staff have are lovely and welcoming and with a car park, you don’t have to pay for Council parking.

Negative experience: One of the worst hotels I've ever been in, they don't provide toothbrushes or Toothpaste, the decor is dated, the room and particularly the toilet was incredibly dirty, we were too disgusted to even shower Worst of all, we had no water in our room and they would not get us any water up, they asked us to come downstairs to get our own. I am never coming back here and you should definitely not give it a visit

Positive experience: Few pros and cons to this hotel we stayed for 2 nights. The hotel was very spacious if not dated. Could do with better more up to date decor but it’s perfectly fine for a few nights. It was like a maze when getting to our room lots of stairs to go up. Very confusing layout. Keycard entry. Beds are okay. Reception staff were lovely. Breakfast and the bar were very spacious and easy to navigate. One of the issues that we had was the room was soo hot. I couldn’t sleep properly because every time we went into the room it was like a sauna. We just wanted to get out. Has a great view of the sea front which we visited every day as well as easy access to food places and bars up and down the sea front. Definitely check out the sunrise if you go. We loved it. Toilets in the hotel were lovely very impressive.

Positive experience: We didn't stay but called for lunch. Portions were generous but mini fish and chips were supposed to be mini fish goujons came just as a fish which was watery, not great and didn't really enjoy the dirty fries. Burger was ok. Staff were very nice

Fantastic experience: We enjoyed a fabulous Sunday lunch at the Grand Hotel, Sunderland on Sunday 13 August. Turkey cooked to perfection, six tasty vegetables, perfect roast potatoes & Yorkshire puds. Nice restaurant with sea views. Polite & friendly staff. Special thanks to Lawrence the chef for his wonderful cooking.

Sue Wray 2 years ago

Negative experience: Rang to reserve a table for Sunday carvery. The phone call itself cost almost £4 because its a premium number! Why?? Reserved a table for 12.00 only to be told when we arrived, restaurant doesn't open till 12.30!! Why take bookings for 12.00?? Meal was mediocre. Meat tender but vegetables undercooked. No table service for drinks, had to go into the bar, which for a hotel is unacceptable. Won't return.

Fantastic experience: I had read some of the bad reviews. In my experience, they could not be more wrong. The receptionist was warm, welcoming & helpful. I would have rated service a 5, but the barman could not have been less welcoming. He was rude & turned his back when I was asking a question & never did answer. Otherwise, I had a lovely stay.

Katy McDonald 2 years ago

Positive experience: The hotel is slightly dated, but can't complain for the price - very reasonable. Really good location too - right on the coast. Clean room with a lovely sea view. Friendly service on the reception. I stayed for one night. The hotel has a swimming pool - adults only from 8pm. It was really nice to use the pool in the evening and in the morning before I left! There was a small sauna, steam room and fitness suite. Good free parking availability at the hotel too. The hanging signage to the rooms/reception in the hotel needs to be a bit lower, it's partly hidden behind the top of the door frames, however, I'd recommend for anyone making a trip to Sunderland! All in all it was a pleasant stay!

Fantastic experience: Fourth time we have stayed here, very friendly with great facilities, but it’s the location that makes it special. Only a 30 second walk to a large beach (and that’s with a limp), and dog friendly to boot.

Ryan O'Gorman 2 years ago

Negative experience: Visited for afternoon tea. The process at reception was convoluted, the receptionist walked away in the middle of checking in our booking, and sent us into the wrong room. We asked about food requirements in advanced and requested a dairy free meal, but when we arrived the said they had run out of dairy free scones and substituted them with dry lettuce sandwiches. Later that evening, my partner was very ill, so they clearly served something with dairy in anyway.

R McClafferty 2 years ago

Positive experience: I came here for a spa day with friends and then for afternoon tea afterwards. The Hotel is easy to find and Is right on the sea front. It has plenty of parking and the entrance is right next to the carpark so easy to find. I went into the reception and was directed by a friendly member of staff to the leisure facilities where there was a second reception. I had to wait a while for someone to come and see me but she was a very nice lady and gave me the code to the ladies changing room. Changing rooms were small with only two cubicles for changing, and one loo which I ended up getting changed in. The lockers are great and you don't need change to use them, you just put in a unique 4 digit code. When walking to the pool you walk through a dank little hall way with a rug and emergency exit door. The pool room is nice and bright and the pool was clean. There's plenty of seating around the pool as well as loungers. The hot tub has sand at the bottom so I'm guessing someone went in without showering first. We still got in and it was relaxing but my eyes were stinging, possibly too much chlorine. I got out and washed them in the shower and headed back in. My friends also complained of stinging eyes. We got out and ordered teas and coffees. They weren't the greatest but came with biscuits. We went into the steam room which was a lovely temperature for me. And then into the sauna, again a nice temperature for me. My friends didn't like the dry heat. We headed back to shower and change. There's 2 or 3 showers that are easy to use. They have frosted glass doors but there's plenty of privacy. The shower I went in didn't shut over properly but I wasn't in long. There's plenty of hooks for towels/belongings. I had to get changed under my towel as the changing rooms were full and I'm not one for walking around naked. I didn't use the hairdryer but there was one next to a mirror. I also forgot to mention that there's baby changing and a baby pen to put baby in whilst you change. We headed to the restaurant for afternoon tea. He had set us up on some high tables near the window with bar seats but my friend asked if we could move. He put two tables together for us. He asked us if we wanted tea or coffee but because the coffee was filter coffee we got the tea. We had one pot between four of us. He never came over to ask if we wanted refills at any point and when we got the food he didn't ask if everything was okay. He also didn't mention prosecco was on special offer but we ordered a bottle after seeing the sign on the bar. It was okay but not the best. Every time someone came through the doors into the restaurant or was very cold! But we dealt with it. The service could have been better, he wasnt very forthcoming. Overall we had a great day but a few things could have made the experience better.

Fantastic experience: Rooms a little dated but a really nice stay in a great location just outside the city. Didn't realise it was part of the brittania group which would normally ring alarm bells but this place is lovely. Although didn't realise hotel has a pool and gym which had I known I would have used. Staff all really friendly and attentive.

Positive experience: It’s not a 5 star hotel but it is surprisingly nice inside with some rooms that have great sea views. The entrance to reception is not easy to find just drive up to the barriers off the roundabout. Could do with some maintenance to the car park.

Positive experience: Stayed 3 nights bed breakfast and evening meal. Room was fine - very clean and superb view. No one told us they don't service the room during your stay... no tea/coffee or clean mugs after the first day. Worse, the meal were given on the first night was so absolutely awful we ate out the the next two nights. Used to be a lovely hotel when it was the Seaburn, maybe it could be again, but not right now.

Rosie Ferries 2 years ago

Negative experience: We stayed in a suite overlooking the ocean/roundabout. There was a cockroach in the bathroom, and chocolate on the floor. When we reported the cockroach on the night, the staff member did not apologize and did not seem concerned that a cockroach was in their best room. Due to the large front window in the room, the room was incredibly hot. Despite temperature control panel in the room and 2 fans, the room was sweltering the whole time. Would not recommend.

Darren Vause 2 years ago

Negative experience: My wife tripped and fell into a pot hole which was in their badly lit car park . No first aid was offered and was told I couldn't put it in their accident book until a manager was present. The following morning I asked again to report the accident and was told the manager wouldn't be in till later in the day . I left my contact details and was assured that he / she would be in touch , I'm still waiting for that call . I've tried phoning and emailing them but complete radio silence. If this is how they conduct their business I would avoid like the plague. Very unprofessional. Not even a first aider on site

Positive experience: The grand hotel is in a great location for the local attractions. It could be a 4 star for amenities however rooms and decor is dated, details are missed when cleaning and repairs are evident. Staff were friendly and couldn't complain at the general comfort of the room. Bar is expensive, £5.25 a pint and double gin lemonade over £10. This hotel features a nice pool great for kids however the hotel has chlorine scent. Some investment wouldn't go a miss the whole sea side is improving year on year so will only continue to attract more people

Positive experience: Booked in here for two days, used to be the Marriot hotel but now The Grand Hotel (Owned by the Britannia Group). Normally hotels owned by Britannia are dilapidated and neglected. This hotel for the money (£131 for two days!) is extremely good value for money. Rooms are dated but perfect for my use. Clean rooms, spacious and the staff are friendly. Plus a pool, sauna, small gym, steam room and jacuzzi. Plus you’re on our beautiful coast, literally metres from Seaburn beach/Roker beach which is beautiful.

Thomas Henry 2 years ago

Negative experience: Does an awful Sunday carvery at £12.95 mostly warm soft congealed veg. Place is dirty, dated and rundown, having had the dinner decided to escape the music to the seating area at the back which stunk of bleach. Don't know how the people running this venue can't see what's wrong.

Steven 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Enjoyed a 1 night stay here, rooms could be modernised more but ideal location right next to the beach with fantastic leisure facilities such as the pool, sauna and steam room. The hotel also has a small gym which is useful. Bar downstairs with a happy hour between 4 and 7 where some pints are reduced to £3 a pint. Reception staff very friendly and helpful. Food takeaways within 0.5 Miles away.

Tim Frost 2 years ago

Positive experience: Adequate but very tired and run down. Needs to be given some attention to general maintenance. We did not eat breakfast as we had not heard good things about it. Also the reception continuously stinks of chlorine (very off putting) There are better hotels in the area.

Positive experience: Second time of staying at this hotel, have to say the room I had on my first visit was better than my stay this time, not that there were major things wrong but the small things. And maybe I paid for a better room last time I don't know. My strangest problem with the room was that there was only one ceiling light and this was in the first part of the room but going round into the bedroom area there were only lamps, and whilst there was a sofa in the first part of the room the TV was actually sat in the bedroom so if you wanted to watch you had to sit on the bed. Little things.

Fantastic experience: Pleasantly suprised. Rooms dated but clean and the bed was comfortable. The service was good, check in was easy and the staff helpful and friendly. We had opted for overnight stay with 3 course meal and breakfast the next day. We were well pleased with both the standard of food and service. We would return.

Fantastic experience: Little bit dated, but spotlessly clean, staff were fantastic and friendly, location is great, private car parking fleet safe. Good size bed and TV, wi-fi, etc. Slept great. Only downside is there was no tea/ coffee or kettle in the room.

Positive experience: This venue is classed as an "elite venue" it is a bit tired and could do with some renovation. The hotel is going cashless in the near future, and It is not possible to charge to your room. Also, the bar shuts at 11pm promp, and there is no room service. The reception and leisure centre staff are friendly and helpful. The service in the bar is slow and relatively friendly depending on who is working, although as I mentioned, 11pm is closing time, and the shutters are down at 11pm and not a second after. Again, the service in the restaurant is slow but friendly. Be aware that breakfast finishes at 9 am. on weekdays and 10 am at the weekend. The best thing about the hotel is the location, which is right on the seafront and is within walking distance of several decent restaurants, and bars which are open later than the hotel.

Negative experience: Booked my Groupon deal for today so my husband took the day off so the family could have a little treat in the spa facilities with a afternoon tea. Arrived and the pool isn't open. A phone call from reception would have been nice but when we arrived they didn't seem bothered. Cancelled the day and our afternoon tea.

Positive experience: Went for afternoon tea with spa use. Could only use swimming pool but got a voucher to return to its facilities when all working. Afternoon tea was nice but staff not around much and very quiet.

Positive experience: Nice beers not a large selection but you will find one you like. Staff are very friendly as you would expect in a hotel. And good entertainment on when they put it on.

Fantastic experience: Stayed for Christmas for the price we couldn't complain. Bit disappointed the restaurant wasn't open. Drinks were quite expensive. Overall we had a lovely stay. Room was very big very clean and very comfy. We stayed here just after covid and had no housekeeping. I had a feeling they wouldn't resume after covid. I'm fine with that and if you need anything reception staff were happy to help. We will be back again. Think we need loyalty points

Positive experience: Second stay and the staff have been consistently excellent. Late arrival was no problem and nothing too much trouble. Room was clean, generous in size and comfortable, extra heating supplied for the wintery condition’s much appreciated. The only issue we had was noise. Loud talking and even shouting, along with children running up and down the corridors both very early and very late at night was infuriating. But understandably not something the hotel can do much about. Worth keeping in mind if you’re after a quiet stay or need to get a decent nights sleep and your stay is during a busy time of year. Hotel etiquette and consideration for others is clearly lost on some guests.

Negative experience: We booked an afternoon tea with use of leisure facilities, the changing rooms were disgusting, used towels on baby pen, toilets messed up with one seat off not that I could have used it anyway it was filthy. The pool and jacuzzi was nice no issues, staff pleasant enough, however once in restaurant the order had been put down as two not four people so they hadn't done enough food for 4, Tony although nice got our drinks mixed up and we weren't allowed any top up of refreshments despite one, my complaint about changing rooms and two, initially got order wrong. I would have thought they could do a few more sandwiches as compo! Anyway all in all the state of the changing rooms has absolutely put me off and will definitely not be visiting again

Fantastic experience: Meet some old friends here for a chat and a catch-up. We had a bit to eat and a drink which was all very good. The food portions were excellent and good value for money. The staff were friendly and helpful. Recommended.
