Surrey Sports Park: Opinions
Negative experience: I absolutely don't recommend this place. No respect to the members. All they want is money. I had an injury and couldn't go to the gym. Although I paid for the membership, I had another outstanding payment. I paid it and it's a goodbye to this place.
Hi Shalini. We are sorry to hear about the negative experience you had with us. Please feel free to contact us via the email: [email protected] to discuss the matter further. Thank you.
Negative experience: Please don’t waste your money on this place!! Zero organization! Zero respect to members! You’ll end up paying money and receiving no service at all and they will not even give you your money back!! Also, the sauna and steam keep getting out of service every now and then.. what can I say?! I can keep talking all night about the terrible experience i had in this place!! Just don’t waste your money on this awful place!!
Fantastic experience: Love it every time I go but this time a proper business man gave me a good halal hotdog
Negative experience: Customer service is very unhelpful. Previously gave warnings about when membership is due to start again after being frozen, now deny they ever did it in the first place. When shown proof they backtracked and said they changed their system without notifying anyone. Very poor.
Negative experience: The sauna and steam room facilities are never open. Throughout my membership they were closed for months. So if you plan on joining to use these facilities, I suggest you don’t sign up. The support team are not helpful at all… I emailed them a complaint and received back an automated response. When they finally acknowledged my complaint (because I raised it again) the support team simply brushed me off. Lazy and poor customer service.
Negative experience: If you are planning to join and use the sauna and steam room facilities be aware that these have been closed for months. Surrey Sports Park have a track record of closing these. Also if you email the support team expect to receive a copy and pasted reply until you go in yourself to speak to reception about any problems you may have. Poor customer service.
Negative experience: Gym is tiny and chronically overcrowded during termtime, irrespective of time or day. Very overpriced for what it offers. Recently switched to The Gym Group in Guildford, which outclasses SSP by all metrics: cheaper, double the space (so less crowded too), better equipment, 24h access, proper climate control. No brainer when choosing between the two.
Negative experience: Expensive for what it offers. A two hour pass to use the gym is £15, and the gym itself is fairly small and has standard equipment but nothing too special unless you want squat racks.
Positive experience: Great new facilities. Airy feel. Has most facilities you can think off including climbing wall and swimming pool. ***** they don't take cash anywhere in building*******
Negative experience: Worst costumer service for membership holders!
Negative experience: We have been 3 months without sauna and now your want to close it? I have a membership, and the sauna and steam room are one of the reasons I joined! After classes, swimming, etc, it's the perfect place to relax and socialise with others, and that is as important as exercise. If the sauna doesn't reopen, I'll have to cancel my membership, and I won't be the only one!!!! It's a shame!!!
Negative experience: am a student, the gym is pretty good! (quite crowded) but the staff at the desk are always SO rude and unfriendly, especially to students. makes the gym such an unpleasant experience for no reason.
Fantastic experience: Great venue, football pitch in top condition.
Negative experience: Updating this review as unfortunately it seems to be going downhill! Sauna and steam room have been open once in the 3 months I've been using this place. The swimming pool gets very busy in the evenings, but they will only use half of the deep end for lanes, despite the other half being empty, even when there are 8-10 people in each lane. Admittedly one lane is double width, the slow lane, but with it being near a university, the majority of the swimmers tend to be in the medium and fast lanes. The water is clean, staff are friendly and professional. There are lanes for different swimming abilities. I like that the pool is available pretty much all day, rather than only being able to swim for a hour at a time.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities, awesome 1 on 1 personal trainers
Fantastic experience: Great venue with fantastic facilities for all sports. High quality coaching at holiday camps and clubs.
Fantastic experience: Great set up really good pitches
Negative experience: Appalling. Dated facilities something is always broken. Rude/ racist staff.
Fantastic experience: Good facilities all round. Friendly and helpful staff. Best gym in Guildford.
Negative experience: Traveled 40 minutes to use the sauna and it’s closed for the foreseeable future! No information on the website. Disappointed to say the least
Negative experience: EDIT: I’m downgrading this review from 2 to 1 star because of the new awful app you need to enter the gym. Please let people just use the access card. The app is incredibly buggy, I’ve re-logged in about twenty times already. The guest WiFi here is equally as awful and it’s a 4G/5G dead zone so it’s a nightmare every time you enter the gym. The gym is decent but there is a really nasty old guy who is always working at the gym reception. He has really short buzzed hair and if he isn’t rude for no reason, he’s condescending to anyone he’s talking to. It’s a shame cos otherwise I love the atmosphere there. All the other gym staff seem really lovely. Some of the equipment could do with being replaced too (see pic). Otherwise the gym equipment is really decent and if you go at the right time you can find what you need.
Positive experience: i've only been to the pool area for surrey county swimming championships. it is a terrible venue for any type of competition. no seating, no parking, and barely anywhere for the swimmers even (apart from guildford city because it's one of their home pools). also, even if you get inside to the standing-room-only to try and get a glimpse of the race you trekked all the way over to see, you can't see the timing board anyway as it is blocked by the pool covers. they also swim it long-course, so you can only ever hope to see a very small portion of the race because the spectator area is only in the last 10 metres of the pool. i'm sure the sports park has some good parts to it, but the setup at the pool puts me off trying anything there.
Negative experience: Parking so bad, had 2 additional parking areas which were shut. Beyond words way they didn't open them when the center had numerous events on.
Negative experience: Only chose this place to climb if you don't care about consistent opening times or don't want to climb in the morning
Fantastic experience: Guildford comic con was good day out I am play some of games and got some star wars 4 figures
Negative experience: The sport centre is good but the climbing wall is under gross mismanagement! Let me explain why: The climbing wall has been understaffed and underfunded for quite some time. This has caused an inability to retain qualified staff and keep regular opening hours. The high churn rate for the staff shows that the conditions are not ideal having spoken with some of the managers it is clear that more people are needed to keep the wall open and run the sessions. The climbers are significantly impacted, the bouldering wall opening hours are irregular and change on a weekly basis. As for the roped climbing wall, it is opened even less often. The route setting is done not often enough, meaning that some of the routes on the rope probably have not been changed (all year), the bouldering is reset also not often enough. The stagnation needs to be refreshed. Many people think that all of this is inadequate and are switching to the other centre...
Fantastic experience: Superb pool clean modern facilities , well managed.
Positive experience: I don’t like the car park was waiting here for a car park seat more than one hour, and the staff gave so many car tickets
Positive experience: Nice place, being here for swimming competition, long course swim. Parking is free for threes hours or if you come for an event who is long then 3 hours you have to register your number plate at the reception desk. If you come for a swimming event be aware of the limited space of seats and quite difficult to move on from one side to other. Coffee shop is nice and with lots of places to seats. Nice, polite staff.
Negative experience: One star just for the disappointing customer service. The facilities are nice but the treatment to the customers could be much better
Fantastic experience: If you enjoy a wide variety of sports THIS IS THE PLACE!!
Fantastic experience: Great place for gymnastics competition..brilliant apparatus. .very clean..
Positive experience: Due to the event on the day, parking was a bit chaotic. Facilities are great and looking forwards to come over again soon.
Negative experience: Always really busy and not big enough to host compared to the amount of memberships sold, which in my opinion is irresponsible. This is regarding the actual gym, regarding other facilities within the sports park I cannot comment
Positive experience: All the staff are great at the gym and other facilities. Only thing is the gym can be quite small and is often jam packed making it very hard to work out or even get a machine or bench to workout on as some people hog more than one piece of equipment which is infuriating.
Fantastic experience: A superb venue with huge amounts of parking too. We went to watch Surrey Scorchers play and had a great time. Will definitely go again.
Negative experience: Facilities are great but the hygiene is shockingly bad. The men’s changing rooms are full of grime, tiles missing or broken. Inside lockers are filthy and dirt visible on locker doors. It’s very evident that whoever cleans it, only cleans what’s convenient. The Sauna/Steam room area isn’t much better, the faucet on the drinking water dispenser is loose, drain cover for shower also loose. Steam room lights not working, needs a good clean and silicone either missing or coming away. I didn’t get a chance to look elsewhere, maybe it’s as well I didn’t. And they want around £70 per/mth membership.
Fantastic experience: Very clean and tidy environment, always have friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Surrey Sports park is the most amazing place for anyone who loves sports. They've got a range of sports from squash to basketball, swimming to mountaineering, gym to food court, the place is heaven.. outdoor sports like rugby and football are just a cherry on top of this sports cake.. people from all age groups, children, adults, everyone is welcomed here.. if they had a bed over there, I could have spent my whole life time.. cheers to bright minds behind all the ideas.. and if you haven't visited it yet, make sure you do. That'll be worth it. Happy sport.
Fantastic experience: Pretty amazing place, they have all the sports. The free parking is limited for three hours. Staff here are extremely friendly and also you get to extend your parking 2 more hours at the reception. The coffee shop is so relaxing and comfortable. The sports are so refreshing to be part of!!
Positive experience: They never pick the phone up. You click one option but it goes to another ♀️. Very bad customer service! Signed up for Gym but no induction!
Positive experience: Used the pool facilities all great but a few off the showers weren’t working
Positive experience: In need of maintenance, showers steam room and sauna damaged. Areas often dirty for extended periods
Fantastic experience: Great sports place, good customer service, great climbing area
Negative experience: I mostly use the gym and basketball courts. The gym is small and the equipment needs an upgrade. Signs are posted up on broken equipment for weeks so there doesn’t seem to be much maintenance. The equipment doesn’t seem to be cleaned regularly and ventilation is minimal. Basketball courts are good quality (few dead spots on the floor that need repairing) but their booking system is terrible: 1. Frequent cancellations - if the algorithm detects there’s back to back bookings on a court, it’s likely to send a cancellation even if it’s under two unrelated names. 2. If a mass private event is booked for all the courts, the booking system allows for customers to book too causing a double booking and a cancellation email days later. 3. Emailed a complaint to senior management and the managing director about their poor booking system. Informed it will take maybe 6 months to update it. 4. As a result from the poor booking system, staff can be left confused and may misinform customers. There has been conflicting reasons on cancellation provided by multiple staff members, weekend court fees that we shouldn’t be paying if we’re members and frustration on how the organisation is being handled. Things they need to prioritise: 1. Update the booking system - prevents double bookings, minimises customer complaints and confusion. 2. Instruct day time cleaners in the gym 3. Instruct regular maintenance in the gym to ensure machinery is safe and functional 4. Find an opportunity to create more space in the gym, refurbish and update some equipment.
Negative experience: Easily the worst swimming pool in Guildford, public sessions only cater for club level swimmers, if you’re an average swimmer (1 miler per week) life guards will kick you out for being too slow.
Fantastic experience: Excellent facilities and easy parking. Attended for a business networking event
Negative experience: I pay £40 a month for a gym membership here and I am not happy. I come in and see out of order signs on equipment that have been on these machines for months. It's ridiculous, plus this gym isn't that big so really effects your workout with limited machines available
Negative experience: Joining the gym was not a good experience. There was no induction, or introduction to the equipment, I just signed up and walked in, which for a new gym user is very intimidating and not helpful. I tried to contact one of the personal trainers listed on the board outside the gym to arrange an induction session, but never got a reply, and next time I looked his details were no longer up there, so the board had obviously not been up to date. The gym is always very busy, you frequently have to tailor your workout to the bits of equipment yu can actually get onto. There was no emailed or written confirmation or contract of membership, so when I wanted to cancel after the minimum 3 months I had no easy way of checking what the leaving conditions were (they aren't anywhere on the website either), and effectively paid a month's membership for 2 visits. If I need to join a gym again in the future, it won't be this one.
Negative experience: THE GYM The gym has a ok set up but several machines have been broken for months and some of these machines they have only one variation of. Very disappointed at paying 40 pound a month for a gym that doesn’t repair its machines some cables have been broken for close to 3 months and we are now down to one double set of cables that work.
Positive experience: The gym is small and usually full at certain times. Very good pools. Classes at various times and topics with amazing instructors. I am very happy to go to the complex regularly.
Fantastic experience: Good parking facilties, clean and well maintained pool, always with staff around, a mice coffee shop to get drinks and snacks with friendly customer service
Fantastic experience: We checked out the Surrey Scorchers and loved every minute beaware loud doesn't describe it its more of a pounding than a sound.
Positive experience: Don't care how good this pool might normally be. This is my third visit to see my daughter swim in a competition here and I have had to stand almost 14 hours in previous visits. Again I'll be standing today for 4 hours. All parents want to watch their children swim but we cannot sit down as there is little seating for competition use of the pool. This needs to be reassessed as it SUCKS.
Positive experience: Currently the main issues are that there are just not enough lockers available for members at peak times and the showers are not hot enough.
Negative experience: Good facilities but lift been out of order for a long time and cafe staff do not concentrate. Poor communication from staff when concerns are raised.
Negative experience: Incredibly disorganized. It took them months to give me the right (and functioning) card for my membership.
Negative experience: I am a student and have purchased the annual membership. Overall i have not been happy here - the gym extremely overcrowded so i ve had to track days and times (sunday at 8 for example) when it is a bit less busy, but overall it is very very busy and people come to you all the time and ask you to share the gym equipment cause it is busy. Also steam room has been shut for weeks and nobody has repaired it despite all the complaints. As a result all people go to the tiny sauna and unless you want to be touching the sweat of other people, then better not to go. It is expensive membership and i hope they will do better.
Fantastic experience: Wasn't visiting to do sports but it looked like a lively and popular sports centre. There was lots going on. Parking wasn't easy, (Sunday morning) but we did find a place.
Fantastic experience: They provide a nice hardcourt (just a normal wooden basketball or volleyball clue) suitable for indoor frisbee with good air conditioning and heating especially in the winter. The artificial grass and natural grass pitches are well maintained! To finish it off staff are friendly and helpful.
Fantastic experience: Incredible facilties, and very friendly staff, who were willing to help out and answer all our questions. Would love to come back here again
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility. Massive place. Huge upstairs outside seating area by bar. Imagine it's great in the summer. :)
Negative experience: They are lucky to get one star, you need to add to do review. Our son joined in 2020 when there were only annual memberships. He's left this gym as it was too costly to get too and they wont refund him a fairly large sum of money. Will be taking further
Negative experience: Dreadful. Nobody answers the phone, website useless. Impossible to view an up-to-date timetable, still showing 2020! Spent ages to find timetable for aquarobic and other activities; gave up. Looking somewhere else. I understand why sometimes it is worth spending more and going private...
Positive experience: Great facilities! I attend trampolining, fitness classes and I also use the gym and pool regularly and never have any complaints... Except you have to pick the right time for the gym as it is very busy at the minute.
Fantastic experience: British Masters Judo championships, amazing place, so big!! Helpful reception staff.
Positive experience: Judo comp there. Much too small to hold a big event like British Masters, but that's the fault of British Judo, not the centre. It's a very nice venue, to be fair.
Negative experience: Very difficult to get anyone from the Squash section - I emailed twice and didn't get any answer. Then I contacted the venue and they cant help you and just asked you to email and email again. Very poor organisation is my first impression.
Positive experience: The Climbing centre is very good for its size and is great in combination with the sports park facilities. However, the routes for bouldering are not very accessible for beginners - there are not enough easy routes for people starting out. The bouldering section would be excellent if it had more VB's-V3's/V4's.
Fantastic experience: Thanks for supporting basketball community! Excellent facilities
Fantastic experience: Great selection and variety of sport to choose from. love that I can go from swimming one day to rock climbing the next. Very reasonable prices for membership. And staff are friendly and helpful!
Negative experience: staff threw away an extremely expensive swimming costume after i left it there for less than 30 minutes and refused to return it. I will be invoicing you for the full cost of the swimming costume. It is now out of production so it’s irreplaceable and was endlessly sentimentally valuable. Staff really disappointed me by refusing to look for it, update me on it and covered up their incompetence rather than trying to help. Really disgusting behaviour.
Fantastic experience: Huge sporting complex. Huge variety of sports and classes to take part in. Big arenas for performances. Clean facilities and friendly staff. Starbucks was a bit slow but lovely.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic place to visit, lots of parking available. Activities from swimming, climbing , tennis courts outside and sports hall for various activities.
Positive experience: Surrey sports park is always the place that I visited, for climbing and badminton, also trying other classes e.g. Ji Jitsu, Yoga etc. Overall, staff is friendly but you could hardly book the badminton court now, which I have been paid around £150 for standard membership annually, the route setting is kinda same style everytime, and there are no new holes that have been invested in, which makes me feel climbing in Surrey sports park is a bit boring. But overall, it is worth to visit if you want to try new sport and Surrey Sports Park will be the place that you are looking for.
Fantastic experience: One of the best lesuire centres I've been to. Swimming pool is excellent, usually a 25m public swim but sometimes 50m. Gym is large and welcoming, though can get quite busy. Plenty of exercise classes, squash courts, and football courts. There is a Starbucks on level 2.
Positive experience: Super super expensive but good host for uni sport clubs. Would not recommend to the public but definitely yes if you're a student.
Negative experience: It has good facilities but if you are interested in badminton courts, which SSP says they offer, there is very little chance of getting a court booking.
Fantastic experience: Visited SSP for the Astolat Model Railway Circle's annual exhibition and enjoyed our "down time" at lunchtime in the Starbucks on site.
Fantastic experience: A really excellent & well equipped Sports Centre with a huge range of indoor & outdoor facilities. Olympic swimming pool, Rock climbing wall, Squash courts, multi purpose courts for badminton, football, basketball, netball etc & lots of outdoor grass & all weather pitches. There is a nice cafe as well with viewing galleries.
Fantastic experience: Great facility for anyone doing sport car parking can be difficult in busy periods and coffee shop can get busy too.
Positive experience: Very nice place and clean. Really big and everything is good quality and good staff, gym just a litte small but still very good
Negative experience: Really disappointing. Surrey have a basketball team and had a double match day which as a result meant you were parked there for over 3 hours. Surrey use a company called Horizon Parking who will chase you if you exceed a 3 hour stay, charging you more money. This max duration was not explained clearly when the tickets were purchased and I imagine many people have been caught out. If Surrey Sports Park are hosting events lasting over 3 hours, it should be make clearer what the max stay is, because having paid for the event, you should not be expected to pay this additional charge.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities with friendly staff. We used to use the middle 4G pitches there for our 11 a side football training for a few seasons until we moved and I now use the lower area for 6 a side league on a Monday. We also play the Surrey uni team on the grass pitches round the side which are kept in good condition. Inside has everything you could ever imagine…..rock climbing wall, tennis courts, 4G pitches, huge gym and workout studios, indoor courts for all sorts. Can’t comment on cost as never paid for any services here but it always impresses.
Negative experience: After years of hoping that the pool would not go to waste, the smooth brained management are still limiting the pool to kids. The only thing worse than local council is university owned.
Fantastic experience: Massive sports park with loads to do ranging from rock climbing to squash! Has a built in Starbucks for all you coffee thirsty people! Friendly staff and massive car park!
Positive experience: 4 stars just because water in swimming pool was to cold , for 3 years old daughter.
Fantastic experience: Covid safe throughout. Staff are very welcoming and warm. Everyone is working their best in these difficult time during the COVID restrictions. The go to place to exercise in a world class sporting facilities next to the door steps.
Negative experience: What a shower! The systems are dreadful, the phone system doesn't work; you can never get through. The booking system crashes and if you ever manage to access the system, classes are fully booked within minutes. Save your money and get some fresh air.
Positive experience: Fantastic facilities, unfortunately Pool is heavily oversubscribed so very difficult to book a slot.
Fantastic experience: In the heart of Surrey University amazing place to learn
Fantastic experience: Lovely place to sit and chill when you have a bad day. Very quiet and peaceful when theres no sports games on :)
Positive experience: Some great facilities, poorly managed. I've been a member of the Surrey Sports Park on and off since it opened. The good: The pool is great, although the changing rooms are now looking a bit run down. The gym is good but tries to cram to much equipment in and is often very busy and therefore there is little open space. The climbing wall is very good for what it is, routes are reset often and has a good range of grades. The bad: Classes are often cancelled at short / no notice. There is zero control of the booking process, so classes are often fully booked but if you turn up anyway you'll find the class half empty. The website is terrible and it is difficult to find opening times or class times. The phone number for the surrey sports park is purely ceremonial, no one ever answers it. The sound insulation is terrible in the studios. So you could be doing a yoga class and hear the pumping music of the spinning studio next door and the dropping of weights in the gym upstairs. The Starbucks on site would win awards for inefficiency, never have so many people made so little coffee.
Positive experience: The facilities are excellent - clean, modern and great quality. Only complaint is that the gym gets little too hot and busy, relatively small with lots of equipment crammed in. Also impossible to find any pricing online, especially PAYG prices. Definitely worth a visit just for the 50m pool.
Fantastic experience: The set up at Surrey Sports Park is amazing. Anyone living near by is extremely lucky to have access to such a top quality facility. The University benefits from its equipment and range of sports on offer. Though I have only been here to play hockey, I know that international teams have trained and played here during tournaments. It really is top quality and gives every athlete what they need for their sport.
Negative experience: Whilst the gym equipment is good, the Surrey Sports Park has completely outgrown itself. Peak times are all times before work, after work and lunchtimes, and during these peak times you will have to wait up to 15 minutes for the piece of equipment you want to use. Waiting 10 minutes for a squat rack and then 10 minutes for a treadmill EVERYDAY for £57 a month is becoming very not worth it. Not sure I will be staying much longer
Positive experience: I walk my dog around the sports park most weekends and I cannot help feeling that the facilities are not used to their full potential. There must be at least 6 football and 6 rugby pitches, not to mention various Astro pitches, and I have never seen more than a couple of game in progress at one time. Why don’t the management open up the facilities to the wider public? Rant over - it’s a great place to walk my dog!
Positive experience: Lovely location but the room had cold water in the AM which was a killer for my early start. Bottled water and biscuits a nice touch. Milk for coffee was moldy so not great. Staff were friendly and helpful and although I didn't eat at the hotel the food looked nice.
Positive experience: Great place to visit. Has all the sporting things you could imagine.
Fantastic experience: We visited Surrey Sport Park to watch the basketball. It was great fun! The oark has great facilities including a bar that sells food. The staff are friendly and helpful. I would definitely visit if you are a sports fan!!!
