Fantastic experience: I went on my own to celebrate my birthday. The facilities are excellent, and even though I was alone, I found it easy to locate quiet rooms and areas of the pool—even during busy times (although it never felt crowded). The ice room is fantastic, especially when alternating between the steam room and saunas. The relaxation room is spacious, and the background music adds to the tranquil atmosphere. The staff were always very helpful and welcoming. The Thai restaurant was fantastic as well. I will definitely return. Amparo

Fantastic experience: Went for a Spa day with my friend for her birthday. Brilliant day with large choice of facilities. The hydrotherapy pool is fantastic with a wide range of options. Customer service was fantastic, with herbal tea and a tour on arrival. Fresh towels and robes all provided. Changing rooms were clean and spacious. We had a half day pass with a 2 course meal and choice of treatment included. Food was divine. We opted for the Anti-Stress massage as our treatment which was super relaxing. Overall a wonderful experience package and would recommend to anyone wanting to get away or treat a friend/loved one.

Negative experience: Very disappointing. For both of my days at the hotel the sauna was closed. When I asked whether I could use the second sauna they said it’s an additional cost and were very unhelpful. The facilities that were available were dated and not in good condition.

Fantastic experience: Nice spa, with different sauna rooms. Food was delicious and the massage was the best. Will definitely be coming back.

Positive experience: Really nice spa; some nice features (cold room is a nice touch) and the deal with the food is excellent value. The Thai food is phenomenal. Had to drop a star for the slightly shambolic check in process... I'd completed all the forms online etc but still a 15 minute wait. Wasn't the best start but luckily it ended on a high. Will be returning!

Fantastic experience: The staff were welcoming and made our first time there easy. The hydrotherapy pool was incredibly relaxing and the sauna was large and comfortable. Ice room and steam room were also great. Treatments for both of us were luxurious and melted away our stresses.

Fantastic experience: On the way home to Lincs from Dorset I decided to take a spa afternoon at SenSpa, as I use their products at home and the facilities looked fab online. The spa afternoon was from 12.30pm-5pm with afternoon tea included, but because I booked an Alphasphere session and a massage I asked if I could skip afternoon tea to enjoy the spa; the staff kindly packaged up afternoon tea for me to take home which was lovely of them! The spa was a bit hidden and took me some time to find my way in but once I did the staff were all very friendly and I loved the check-in with a complimentary wellness tea and a chat through the facilities. Heading upstairs to the changing rooms, they are spotlessly clean and well equipped. Robes are XL by default and as a plus size lady mine fit just fine. Lockers have a key which you pin to your clothing and a token which you just roll in again when you open them (looks like they used to be £1 coin lockers). Only slight downer was only one towel provided rather than a body and hair towel, but not a big issue. I had booked the Alphasphere session for 1.30pm so didn't want to get wet beforehand, instead I headed for the tepidarium which was just heavenly - lovely warm stone beds which are much comfier than they sound, in a blissful room with a water feature, gentle music and a soft blue light. I did manage to land on a bed which didn't seem to be heated (compared to the one I had later on) but was still comfortable enough to relax. The Alphasphere session was trippy but amazing! You can choose from four different coloured themes - I chose Blue, which was relaxing and calming - and then you settle into your slightly rocking bed and let the experience unfold. It was surprisingly relaxing, with colours, sounds and sound vibrations through the bed as well as warmth, and the time went very quickly. Although a therapist shows you to the room and sets it going, you can then leave by yourself and continue with the other spa offerings. After this I headed for the 14m pool for a few lengths and just letting myself float at each end, then spent a bit of time in the jacuzzi by the pool before heading back into the hydrotherapy area. Oh, the hydrotherapy pool is quite incredible. There are little buttons all around the sides and each triggers a different water effect - from lying down with bubbles all around to very potent massage jets to a standing up jacuzzi to jets of water to pummel your shoulders...it's just incredible. I loved it, and because it wasn't too busy I was able to move around and enjoy each feature for as long as I wanted. I interspersed with spells in the herbal sauna, which was also lovely, though I can't take the heat for a very long time. I had hoped to try the amethyst steam room but sadly it was out of order. A shame but I didn't feel as though I was missing out hugely as there was so much else on offer! When I felt toasty warm out of the sauna I tried the experience showers which were certainly an experience - I think I almost screamed at one point when the cold water hit! Very refreshing, though I didn't have the courage to try the drench bucket(!). Finally I returned to the tepidarium and found a lovely warm lounger this time to settle down on for 20 minutes or so before my massage. I could have stayed there much longer, it is a beautiful quiet room and the warm beds are so comfy! After showering and getting changed (lovely showers in the changing rooms with huge rainfall heads and shower gel, shampoo and conditioner available) I headed for my anti-stress massage - I'd opted for 45 mins. Oh my goodness - such a good massage. Actually firm pressure, it really hit on all the sore spots and stress points and I felt so relaxed afterwards. I've had many other massages, some very recently, and this was the deepest and most effective back massage I've had in some years. Overall an absolutely amazing spa experience. I felt completely relaxed and comfortable throughout and enjoyed many of the fantastic facilities.

Positive experience: I have been here twice. The forst was for a Thai massage which was absolutely fantastic. Maybe the best massage I have ever had. The second time was for a pedicure. I drove far to get this as I was so impressed with my first visit. The actual pedicure was OK, varnish etc. The killer was that at the end (even though I brought flip flops) I was told that I needed to wait 45 minutes in reception for the polish to dry. Not to put flip flops on, or for the beautician to put them on then varnish, which is what usually happens. I was supposed to wait in the spa reception. This was along about 4 corridors and 2 flights of stairs. In bare feet when people have walked in outside shoes. It's not ok, I walked this way because I had no choice, but left (as soon as I got to reception) feeling like I had dirty feet and why did I bother. It's top end price, which would be ok if it wasn't for my exit experience.

Negative experience: If you're booking Senspa via a stay at the Montagu Arms be prepared for disappointment. You'll see on the Montagu Arms website that the hotel promises access to Senspa. "Guests of the Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to the leisure club at SenSpa which includes an indoor pool, gym, poolside Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna on a complimentary basis". It does not mention any restrictions, which, as you'll find out when you try and book the spa, that you can't actually use the spa on the day of your checkout. Nor are there any restrictions mentioned during the booking process. This is highly unusual for a hotel that claims to be a 4 star. I’ve stayed in many 4/5 star hotels and every time been able to place my luggage in storage and use the spa facility the day of checkout. Based on this misinformation on the Montague Arms Hotel website (or deliberate omission) and the poor customer service I received I cancelled my reservation. They made no attempt to try and rectify things and give me a positive experience. The Montagu Arms would do well to bridge the gap between marketing material and reality quickly.

Fantastic experience: We were given a spa package as a wedding present. The staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating. I had a lovely facial and would definitely go again. Was a real luxurious treat and I'll definitely be coming again for my next birthday.

Positive experience: Very nice spa, didn't think I got ripped off paying £169 pp, weekends seem to be more expensive yet there is no mention of price increase for weekends. We did the half spa day, would be nice to see a menu on the website for the lunch included.

Positive experience: My mother in law and I had a day spa package with afternoon tea. The spa was fantastic and great choices of different room to go in, and pools and jacuzzi. The customer team were lovely and very helpful from the time we walked in. However the afternoon tea was very disappointing. We didn’t expect everything to be deep fried and the sweet options were very disappointing to. Deep fried banana and a pancake with coconut and two scones. We thought the restaurant would be open to eat just incase but the chef had left already. All together very nice day, just went back home very hungry sadly.

Chris Gundry 3 years ago

Positive experience: Nice spa facilities, hydrotherapy pool etc were nice, although some of the special showers need some maintenance. Treatments were great.

Mathew Church 3 years ago

Positive experience: Amazing facilities, if not a little tired in places, certain experiences not working to 100% so the facility needs a slight revamp and some of the equipment brought back to 100%. The food however is bang average with limited options in terms of choice, 3 starters and 3 mains, with the portion sizes being small, medium at best, so expect to be hungry and or take a packed lunch. I have given it a 4 star as the treatments really were exceptional and the staff in the spar were excellent, so this did lift the experience of the day a lot and was a massive redeeming factor. My advice, go for the Spa and eat elsewhere and you will not be disappointed.

Fantastic experience: My partner and I had a wellbeing day booked (hyrdotherapy, 30 min facial, lunch) along with an additional 45 min massage for our anniversary. This was both our first time at a spa and it was amazing! We had such a lovely time relaxing in the different rooms available within the hydrotherapy session but our favourite experience was the facial - we've never felt more relaxed in our lives! Thank you to all the wonderful staff who made our day so great.

Positive experience: My wife and I had a spa day at SenSpa to give us a break from the kids! We booked a spa day package which included a 45 treatment and lunch in the restaurant, and we topped it up with a further 60 minute treatment. We’re regular spa goers so have a lot of prior experience to go on. On arrival the entrance is rather oddly around the back of the hotel near the loading bay, so a slightly odd first impression! The reception was small but perfectly functional and our check in was quick and reasonably effortless. They’d lost the health questionnaire we did online but this seems to be a common occurrence at many spas and the physical one took 30 seconds to complete. The spa itself is on a rather tight site - mainly because it’s been squeezed around the back of the hotel so you don’t get the expansive views and large windows many modern country house spas give you (think South Lodge or Sopwell House). This means that the spa is on several levels and can be a bit dark. The changing rooms are up a small flight of stairs and are perfectly functional, if again rather small and a bit tired looking. The lockers were rather temperamental in the mens changing room. They don’t provide any flip flops so unless you want to wander round in bare feet then bring your own! We had a quick but comprehensive tour of the facilities and then were left to our own devices. For a comparatively small and older spa it has plenty of facilities - hydrotherapy pool, various saunas, steam rooms, ice rooms, jacuzzi, thalassotherapy, a rhasoul etc. We made use of all of these and they were all fine, although one of the experience showers wasn’t working. The spa was relatively quiet which was nice - not least because many spas these days really pack people in. As with the public areas, the various pools, jacuzzis and rooms are fine and do what you’d expect, but are showing their age a bit next to the super modern and new spas that the U.K. has plenty of. It looks and feels like it was built in the mid 90s - which isn’t a bad thing per se, but means it has a different vibe to modern light filled spas. We arrived at 9am and there were still a variety of workmen up ladders doing bits which detracted from the relaxing experience a bit until they were done. They were also testing various alarms which was annoying - these type of things should be done before or after opening hours rather than when guests are there. Our treatments were very good. The treatment rooms are via a maze of passages and doors and are rather too small since they’ve obviously has a shower installed at some point after they were originally built. This obviously doesn’t impact the quality of the treatments themselves, which were excellent. The massage beds were comfortable (but not heated, again probably reflecting the age of the spa) and the rooms had the usual soft lighting, relaxing music etc. They don’t provide the paper disposable pants so treatments are in your swimming costume; which isn’t as good since some products can damage the material and if they’re wet from your swim then your treatment is in a wet swimming costume! Lunch in the restaurant was fine - the Thai restaurant was closed which we knew about in advance but the food from the main restaurant was good and the wine delicious. In summary - a good spa with lots of facilities and excellent treatments - but one which is showing it’s age a bit and needs a bit of focus on creating that pampering feel and providing some basic amenities (flip flops, disposable pants for treatments etc).

Negative experience: We had been looking forward to visiting Senspa for some time, as we have experienced Limewood and Chewton Glen. We were quite disappointed with the facilities, it was very tired and it is in need of renovation. There was no ice in the ‘ice room’ and one the sensory showers wasn’t working. Lots of the spotlights had blown in the toilet and some of the towel hooks were not attached to the wall. The changing room was very busy at 11am, I’m not sure how they were maintaining any kind of social distancing. The best part of the day was the traditional Thai massage, the massage therapist was excellent. The food and service at lunchtime was also very good. In the future we would definitely go to Chewton Glen or the Limewood.

SenSpa at Careys Manor
SenSpa at Careys Manor

Dear Clare, Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We are unable to offer guests ice to cool down as it would mean guests touching the same ice and then placing it on their bodies, which would not be compliant with Covid health and safety. With regard to the changing rooms, we do strictly schedule changing room times on arrival and departure to ensure guests can easily maintain social distancing. We recognise that guests may wish to use the changing rooms aside from those times and we simply ask that they enter when they can safely distance - there is time during the day when our changing rooms are virtually empty and our receptionists can help ensure that you can enter safely. At 11.00am we had a members’ class and you were unlucky that you popped into the changing rooms at that time. During lockdown we took the opportunity to repaint and renovate the spa and I am sorry if you found us wanting. Each morning our maintenance team replaces any of the thousands of lights in the spa and I apologise that this task had not been completed. Please do contact me if I may be of any assistance. Best wishes Lina

Negative experience: Have been visiting sen spa for longer that I can remember at leased twice a year for a full spa day and massage. It was my place of peace and calm when everything got too much. Unfortunately they have stopped offering spa days without treatments or 2 course meal. I am unable to have a massage currently due to contraindications and I don’t rate a facial for the price and cannot have my nails painted for work. I have spoken to sen spa on several occasions to try and book a full spa day with mud house and alphasphere but this has not been aloud. The service was very poor and I was told to look at the website for the spa days they have to offer. I called back as this wasn’t clear and was bluntly told no spa days without treatments. Thankfully my condition is temporary but that is discrimination, not all guests are able or want to have treatments. Thankfully there is more than one 5* spa not far who’s prices are far more reasonable given the facilities on offer and are both able to accommodate a spa day without treatments. I had a lovely spa day with use of the mud house and a wonderful light lunch. I understand covid has changed things but I’m not sure I will return. Their signature oil is divine and I will carry on using it at home

Dear N B1236 Thank you for your review. I love all things Thai too and we do our best to bring that experience to SenSpa with our therapists and chefs. You will be pleased to know that we spent lockdown on some renovation and painting. I hope you will be able to return soon. Best wishes Lina

Fantastic experience: I have really enjoyed the spa day package here. The massage was so well done and really got all the knots out of my back followed by the hydrotherapy pools that just made me melt and finally the afternoon tea and champagne. It's been a really memorable day and a well earnt relaxing treat. The staff were fantastic and the environment really helps calm and soothe you. I'm sure I will be back to enjoy it again in the future.

Fantastic experience: Amazing spa. Wide range of rooms in the spa area alone.. could happily have spent the day there without needing additional treatments. Definitely recommend the experience shower and ice room! The rhassoul mud treatment was lovely and they were not stingey with the amounts of mud. Left my skin feeling really soft and was much better than other spas I have tried this treatment at. I did try the alphasphere which I wasn't impressed with at all - felt less like a spa experience than an exhibit, but was worth a try for the price. The mind and body class was lovely and relaxing - nearly fell asleep during it. Would recommend doing this if included in your package. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout the day. The staff really went out of their way and were so polite in the spa and restaurant. The lunch at the zenspa was incredible! Lovely size portions and wonderful quality. The pad Thai is worth a try. They cater for allergies no problem.. in fact the lunch menu was totally dairy free (bar the desserts) and most options were gluten free too. They also provided soya milk, gluten free cereal and gluten free bread at breakfast. The changing rooms were nice and clean. GHDs, hairspray and hairdryers available too. Only gripe was that the spa sometimes got busy, and this was a week day so I can imagine on weekends it can be a bit of a pain. They have a limit of twenty people in the hydrotherapy pool at a time which I can imagine is a bit inconvenient if you've paid for a relaxing day and have to wait out of the pool.

Kathryn Walsh 5 years ago

Negative experience: The spa itself is beautiful, plenty of facilities! Robes and towels are supplied, but we had to ask for slippers. My main reason for leaving a review is that even though we had a lovely time, I’m a bit annoyed that I paid for the moonlit evening package which was £79 for 3 hours, in addition I also booked a 90 minute treatment at £115. The treatment was given within the time of the spa evening meaning I paid £79 for 90 minutes in the spa, where as if I hadn’t booked the treatment I would have had the full evening. The treatments are booked separately and I believe the time of my treatment should have been before the spa evening package started, feel a bit let down if I’m honest.

Fantastic experience: Always a wonderful experience here, a great way to spend a day. My wife and I have been many times and will definitely be back. My massage was very helpful, I would not argue with the lovely lady who provided it, she had hands stronger than a scaffolder.

Negative experience: Although for the most part the visit was good, I would like to point out a few things we found disappointing. Parts of the main spa area looked run down The "zen garden" was hardly a garden The gluten free afternoon tea was not good at all - despite claiming the food was award winning We were offered some water when we first arrived - but that never appeared. I think they forgot us! The refreshment area was very mediocre - apple and orange juice? While other spas have water and lemon I don't think we will be coming again - as we would have expected more for the price and other spas deliver more.

Hannah James 6 years ago

Negative experience: I had a gel pedicure and a gel file and polish. Both treatments were £20 more expensive than I pay in my local salon therefore I was expecting them to be excellent. I was disappointed! The pedicure was very basic and the therapist was really lacking in skill when applying the gel polish. The polish over spilled onto the skin around my nails and looked very messy. She also didn’t seal it properly at the top of each nail and I had to ask her to go over each one again. I also had to remind her that she hadn’t done a second coat on my right hand but had on my left so the polish looked uneven. The gel polish came off after 5 days as it wasn’t applied properly and therefore peeled easily due to the fact that it hadn’t been sealed properly at the top of each nail and was stuck to the skin around my nails instead of just the nail itself. For £110 paid on two treatments I actually feel I’m owed a refund!

Positive experience: My partner and I went for an evening indulgence which included a 3 course meal. The spa was nice, although greeted by a girl on reception who was not as pleasent, on the many occasions we crossed paths she gave us not very welcoming looks. The food was ok, but had to send the chicken satay back as was uncooked. The experience was nice, but not worth the money paid!

Fantastic experience: This is great spa and hydrotherapy centre adjoining the hotel but you can attend the spa separately. We had a day package and had a lovely Thai lunch and Thai massage as part of the activities. Just being in the pools, steam, sauna and relaxation rooms is fantastic experience in its own right. The spa provides sliders, towels and robe and have showers in changing room. A very chilled out day.
