By joining M Club, you can open the door to a world of experiences to engage your body and mind, all provided by the largest health and fitness clubs in the region.

Staying motivated can always be a challenge, but with a wide variety of fitness classes available across our gyms you’ll find the perfect way to keep active! Whatever you are looking to achieve we have classes for everyone.

We are confident that our staff and facilities can help you to reach your fitness goals. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro... we’re here to help! After spending time with us, we want our members to walk out of our doors after a workout and feel a better version of themselves.

Feel like you’ve left it too late yet again? Well maybe, but there is still all of August to get into a good exercise habit to absolve all the BBQs and drinking that this summer is bringing. Starting now will also set you up nicely for Christmas, yes I’ve said it…the C word. Those parties are only four months away and I always get inundated in late November with clients asking for that two to four week miracle programme that’ll have them trim and toned for their works party, by which point it’s too late. Burning body fat is not easy, especially as we get older. The programme below is an incredibly efficient way of burning body fat, but it’ll still take time, so get started now.You may or may not have heard of HIIT, but in last few years it has become an incredibly popular way of training. Proven to have a positive effect on your metabolism, HIIT is a great way of having a hard calorific burning workout in a relatively short period of time. High Intensity Interval Training is all about an all-out effort for a short period of time, followed by a rest period. The length of these time periods can vary, catering for the individual. Below are some example timings, however, you can manufacture your own time periods to suit your level of fitness, but just remember your work effort must be 100 per cent of your ability. Anything less defeats the object of HIIT.Beginner – 1:3 ratioFor most people, 20 seconds is the perfect time for maximum all-out effort. With this ratio you would complete 20seconds of exercise followed by a 60second rest.Intermediate – 1:1 ratioSticking with 20 seconds, this timing will have you do 20 seconds of all-out exercise followed by 20 seconds of rest. That rest period will fly by so focus on breathing, get yourself hydrated pre-work out so that you’re not wasting valuable recovery time slurping back your water.Advanced – 2:1 ratioThis ratio is commonly known in the fitness world as Tabata training. It is 20seconds of all-out exercise followed by just 10 seconds of recovery. You ideally want eight sets. How many sets you do and what exercise(s) you choose are entirely up to you and what you feel comfortable doing and how much time you have. I would say that try to do full body exercises as these require the most amount of energy, thus burning maximum calories, and try to do at least five sets on whichever ratio.Power LungesKeep your upper body straight, with your shoulders back and relaxed and chin up. Always engage your core. Step forward with one leg, lowering your hips until both knees are bent at about a 90-degree angle, then explode up, switching your foot stance in the air and repeat as quickly as possible. As well as power, this will also develop balance and coordination.Mountain climbersAssume a push-up position with your arms straight and your body in a straight line from your head to your ankles. Bring your right knee to your chest and place your foot back on the ground behind you. Quickly switch to the other leg and repeat as quickly as possible.Spin bikeSat on your bum, set the resistance as high as you can possibly manage and then pedal hell for leather. The momentum and velocity of this exercise will promote exceptional power in the legs and greater core stability. These are just a few exercises that Ido once a week for HIIT. Personally, I’ll pick one exercise and do a block of eight sets on it before moving onto the next exercise, but you can mix it up if you wish.

Gaynor Jones was diagnosed with MS at 26-years-old and writes: “No one told me how to keep my symptoms at bay so I assumed working full time and eating generally well was OK. “My consultant neurologist advised me to move back up north so my family could help me when I was in a wheelchair. The NHS also just prescribed me general painkillers, anti-spasmodic drugs and/or disease modifying treatment, none of which make you any better, just hopefully stops you getting any worse. “The NHS physio simply prescribed me the simple exercise of standing on my tip toes 10 times daily, along with aids such as the wheelchair and walking stick.

“I felt I needed to do a lot more than just standing on my toes, so after looking at several local gyms I joined M Club because they promised me a personal trainer, and assigned Craig Silkens to help me.

“At first I’m not sure if he knew where my limitations were or how far he could push me, but I’m open to any help, and with Craig’s experience I put my trust in him.

“I am now working on my core to help my balance and posture, which is something I never thought I’d be able to do. I’m also lifting weights, using the gym machines with absolute confidence, and although walking into the gym initially was a daunting experience because of my elbow crutch and unsure as to what people might think, with my new found confidence and self-belief, I don’t care.

“I am really starting to reap the rewards – physically, aesthetically and mentally. Craig has advised me on my diet which has improved dramatically and, in turn, has helped keep certain unwanted symptoms at bay.

“I know that I have to push myself, convincing my mind that my body needs the gym, because if I don’t then my body will go backwards and I’ll be letting myself down, but in a weird way I’d feel like I’m letting Craig down because of the amount of time and energy he has invested in me.

“I know that 18 years of having MS will not reverse back in 18 weeks or 18 months, but seeing how far I’ve comein the last several weeks under expert guidance, I am genuinely very excited about what the future holds for me now.”

Over the next few months we will be following two M Club members on their journey to fitness and weight loss. This week we’d like to introduce you to Bryony Highfield.

“Once we got engaged, we went to the Harry Potter studio tour and the photographs from there and our holiday to Cornwall the summer before prompted me to want to lose the weight,” she says.

“I’ve started having breakfast each day,” she says. “I’ve cut out the pop and chocolate, and have started cooking instead of having takeaways.”

“I feel that the key to her success will be the external motivations she has. Bryony has a wedding date set so of course she is concerned about her health and the impact that her current weight is having on it.

“She has already made some changes to her eating habits, she will attend the gym on a regular basis completing a controlled exercise regime and will vary her gym training with a mixture of different aerobic classes and swimming.

“Like all M Club members, her progress will be checked and she will receive constant dietary ideas as well as changes to her training so that they do not plateau.”

Fantastic experience: Luca was very friendly and welcoming. It was our son's first hair cut and he was very positive and happy which made our 11 month old boy feel safe. He asked if he had a favorite TV show and out it on a tablet for him to watch, or soon sat really well for him. Luca was happy for us to take some photos during the cut and then asked if we were happy once he'd finished. I can say all round it was a very positive experience and we'll be returning for our boys next cut. Thanks so much :)

Negative experience: We recently started swimming with my baby boy and was shocked how dirty the baby pool is! Thick layer of dirt underneath the stairs. Very disappointing for such a resort like MClub

Fantastic experience: Absolutely amazing day. Numerous steam rooms and saunas to choose from as well as the lovely swimming pool and Jacuzzis. There was always someone cleaning the pool sides and the changing rooms. The afternoon tea was very nice and have just purchased another deal for us for next year. Highly recommend

Fantastic experience: I've been going to this gym for a while now, and I have to say, it's one of the best around! They have plenty of equipment—everything you could ever need, from cardio machines to free weights and resistance equipment. There's never a wait for equipment, even during busy hours. The facilities are top-notch too! The swimming pool and spa are always clean, and I love relaxing in the sauna or steam room after a workout. They even have a cold plunge, which is perfect for recovery. Parking is never an issue since there’s plenty of it, and it's convenient to grab a bite to eat or a drink from their in-house café. This gym truly has everything you need to stay fit and healthy. Highly recommended.

Negative experience: HAS THE RUDEST STAFF IVE EVER MET! i was coming in with my daughter who is 15years old they wouldn’t even let her in without me “training” with her just because i wasn’t working out they said id have to come back another day when i pay my membership, apparently i can’t supervise her without working out! it is ridiculous i don't recommend this gym to anyone overly expensive, so disrespectful, no understanding whatsoever PLEASE DONT WASTE UR TIME.

Fantastic experience: Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. I was assigned a personal trainer, Jacob, who was super helpful and professional. Jacob created a program for me to follow, showed me all of the machines in great detail and finished by showing me a series of stretches for me to do post workout. Spa area has everything you need to unwind, super hot steam room with good changing and shower facilities.

Negative experience: 16 months of renovations and pretending to improve the club. Went today for a recovery session. Day pass now £30. Laughable. Multiple machines out of order, buckets on the ground for 'leaks' in the roof even though it's 25 degrees out. Sign stating sauna out of use. Persevere to find the Steam room not working. Spoke to a member who says there is no way to turn it on, very rarely works. A trick to get steam is to pour water over a sensor, however there are notices threatening members with a revoke of membership if 'caught'....however if you don't do it then you get no steam. So no steam either way today - staff stated it's been reported out of order but yet to put a sign up ....another sign, to go with No Card No Entry, Must Shower Before Plunge (which is a murky and smelly green colour). No Phones Poolside,....the list of printed Don't do this signs is long. Changing rooms old and many lockers broken where padlocks have been ripped off. Lots of grubby and rusty parts all over. The rust on the bag holder apparently wasn't like that the last time staff looked, hahaha.

Saadiq Moledina 1 year ago

Negative experience: Have been a member here for 4 years. Forgot my card on one occasion and not let in. Staff said they would be sacked as owners are ruthless and this is their new policy. No letters/emails advising of this policy. Only a sign that was recently put on the door of the gym. Subsequently have cancelled my membership.

Negative experience: Been paying over £50 a month for the past 3 years. Called up the Newcastle club today at 7:15pm and the was greeted by possibly the rudest member of staff I’ve ever experienced in my life. She told me it was £30 to bring a friend for a day pass to test the gym. I asked if I could show my friend around without paying £30 for ONE DAY and she was disgustingly rude. Will be cancelling my personal membership and will also ensure the 60+ corporate memberships I am responsible for are all cancelled. DISGUSTING!

Positive experience: Staff are great very obliging. Swimming coach Robyn is fantastic. Nice and clean place. The only negative is it should be a family environment and the amount of bad language from the gym area is terrible and should be addressed. Public areas and people should be encouraged and reminded as such

Negative experience: Lovely gym, recently joined, I rate it one star, the fact that I have to pay £10 for my 9 year old, every time I take him for a swim. I think that it is totally unacceptable and not child friendly. Was told they’re no longer do kids membership.

Marcus Wemyss 2 years ago

Positive experience: The gym equipment is great lots of it and plenty of variety. The spa let's it down having used both sites now I thought the Hanley one was a bit rubbish, (locker rooms look knackered and always full of litter.) Spa lacking there. At castle the locker rooms are nicer but the spa is much worse. hydrotherapy pool is pretty useless and uncomfortable. At almost £50 a month I was expecting a bit of luxury but council run gyms 20 years ago were much nicer.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely brilliant! My son, who is autistic and ADHD, had his first proper hair cut, he liked his long hair, but recently decided he wanted a whole new style! We were both nervous, but Dave was awesome, he was very chilled, and put us at ease straight away. He talked to him, and asked him what he'd like, supplied snacks and entertainment (Netflix), and was a bit out out when my son said "no" to clippers, he did a fabulous job. I can not describe how happy you've made us. Thank you so much Dave!

Fantastic experience: Worth the money. Newly refurbished equipment as of September 22. Brand new equipment. Clean. Staff are lovely. You never wait for a machine and then you have the hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room as a bonus. Some of the stuff breaks but seems to be fixed within the week usually. Never get kids in the way in the pool or sauna area because they aren't allowed. Never get kids in the way when you're working out because they're not allowed. Generally friendly members too, don't get too many gym bros sat on the benches reading their phone or groups of 10 of them hogging a station. Never even been to the festival park venue but I guess that's a bonus to membership too since that's only a few years old. It's pricey what with 40 to join and also locked in for a year (6 months on a corporate membership like public sector workers) but it's definitely worth the money. You've got more chance of sticking to it when you can turn up and work out without getting annoyed.

Positive experience: Editing review as this gym has made significant improvement in quality! New treadmill machines, renovating downstairs gym space, opened cafe, pool and spa facilities improved! Ongoing developments but much happier with quality at present and feel now worth prices. Keep up great work M-club! Old review from 4 months ago: I’m a little disappointed by this gym at the moment. I joined over 2 years ago and was very happy at the time. However; the quality for price has absolutely gone down. The gym is VERY expensive, and the day pass fee is 25 pounds! Furthermore, they have not bothered to open the squash courts yet and they are all full of equipment too. The bathrooms and change rooms are very dirty - full of hair and a strange smell. I just think for the price, the quality has gone down hill. Unfortunate as very convenient for hospital staff. I think I will be leaving this gym in favour of Nuffield

Fantastic experience: I've been a member at M Club for 10 + years. The club has always been been good and appears to be getting better, their customer service and communication in particular are really good. Today I dropped my phone at the club and didn't realise until I got home. I rang the club and spoke to Millie who searched the gym and the car park and found my phone for me. She was polite, friendly and clearly effective - thank you Millie.
