We are a health and fitness suite helping rehabilitate cardiac and stroke patients by keeping fit, gaining a healthy lifestyle and preventing heart problems.
As a registered charity we are a health and fitness suite aiming to help rehabilitate cardiac & stroke patients & also help the general public to keep fit, gain a healthy lifestyle & prevent heart problems.
All our volunteers have been trained in-house to teach healthy exercise. Some have level 2 or 3 in fitness or BACPR qualifications, all volunteers are first aid trained including defib machine.
Join us now for a comprehensive induction with very friendly volunteers who will make you feel welcome & motivate you to achieve your personal goals.
By 1994, Plymouth Heartbeat was registered as a charity, and became affiliated with the British Heart Foundation, and we still currently are.
The support group met regularly on the first Tuesday of each month at Tothill Community Centre temporarily until they got a more permanent fixture at Plymouth Argyle FC.
Plymouth Heartbeat is open to the general public, & we also help rehabilitate. Whether you have a condition or not we provide a structured program for your individual needs which you will love & enjoy.
Our scan system is pictured here. We use this to keep track of memberships and members entering the facility, We also need this in case of any emergencies.
We have a wide range of cardio vascular machines, weight resistance equipments, & a Power Plate Exerciser to help you with your new healthy lifestyle regime, keeping fit, gaining confidence & motivation, & getting a positive attitude about your life.
We provide blood pressure machines for our members to regularly check their blood pressure. You can use these on your own, or you can always ask a member of staff to check your blood pressure. During your inductions we always check whether your blood pressure is ok, before we start your exercise program. We will then indicate where your blood pressure should be. If it is high, we will advise you to check it out with your GP, and we will keep monitoring your blood pressure over the first few weeks to see if it has come down.
We have a room to the side which provides mats, kettlebells, light weights, hula hoops and other light exercise devices to help with exercise.
As of now, we have a card reader so for any upcoming payments you can pay by card, contactless or chip & pin, reciepts are also available if you require them.
We have lockers on site if you require one. Just ask when you come in if you need one and you will get a key to one, Big or Small, and make sure you back the key when you have finished your gym session.
We stock different flavours of water, which costs £1 a bottle. We also provide tea/coffee at 20p each for you to have either before or after your exercise. Alternatively if you just like to pop in, say hello and have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee with other members of the gym or staff, you are always welcome.
To be able to keep this fitness suite facility running we rely on new members joining, renewal of existing memberships, and on individual session fee's as well as charitable donations towards the struggle to help prevent heart disease. If you would like to donate, here is an alternative NEW way to help us raise more money for Plymouth Heartbeat:
Our comment from FitFit UK about Plymouth Heartbeat:
Plymouth Heartbeat is a fantastic community gym located in Plymouth, United Kingdom, known for its friendly atmosphere and supportive staff. Visitors have highlighted the welcoming environment, making it an ideal place for individuals of all fitness levels, including those who may feel intimidated in larger gyms. Here are some key features:
- Affordability: With a small joining fee of £10 and only £1.50 per visit, it offers great value for money compared to larger chains.
- Supportive Environment: The gym is staffed by volunteers who are knowledgeable, friendly, and eager to assist newcomers.
- Inclusive Atmosphere: Many users appreciate the lack of judgment, with no mirrors and a focus on personal improvement. It is a ladies-only area at certain times, fostering a comfortable space for all members.
- Good Equipment Selection: While the equipment may not be the newest, it is well-maintained and adequately meets the needs of gym-goers.
- Community Vibe: Regular visitors enjoy the strong sense of community, with many making lasting friendships.
- Excellent for Rehabilitation: Ideal for individuals recovering from surgeries or looking for a gentle introduction to fitness.
Although the gym does not have changing facilities, the overwhelmingly positive feedback reinforces its commitment to helping members achieve their fitness goals in a positive, non-competitive environment.
Plymouth Heartbeat: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Great place to keep fit, staff are happy and helpful
Fantastic experience: Great cheap gym. Always a friendly face atmosphere is friendly no pressure. Love it there I recommend.
Fantastic experience: Amazing little gym! We have been going for about 2 1/2 months and never felt so safe and welcomed to a gym before :) 100% recommend going
Positive experience: Nice and clean. It was good
Fantastic experience: Although the equipment isn't new, it all worked, which is all you need. The staff are friendly and willing to give assistance if required. The bonus is you pay a small joining fee (£10) and then £1.50 per visit, making it a lot cheaper than all others.
Fantastic experience: I've been going to Curves at Plymstock for over a month now and have seen great results with my general fitness and toning. Cheryl & the team are very friendly and knowledgeable and are always on hand with help & encouragement. It's a ladies only gym which I like and the other ladies and all friendly and of all ages. There is parking if you need it but I'm lucky that it's within walking distance to me. It's not boring as it's a 30 min circuit but you are competing against yourself so you put in what you want to get out. It's definitely a gym I would recommend and will continue to use.
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym Great people
Positive experience: I have been going to this gym for the last twenty years and always found it satisfactory.
Fantastic experience: Great gym, friendly and welcoming
Fantastic experience: Friendly, relaxed, easy access. Good range of equipment.
Fantastic experience: Returned to this gym after recovering from a surgical procedure and it's great if you just want to take things easy. No one judges you, no mirrors and no meatheads hogging the equipment. Price isn't that cheap if you want to go 3 or more times a week compared to a gym like puregym, but it's a charity ran gym with volunteers running it. So it's not as if your lining the pockets of a major brand company that don't need the money.
