Negative experience: The short review is that they took my money for the year and then locked me out of my account and the gym after 24 hours. Paypal had to give me a full refund and I've still not heard from The Gym Group about any of it. Dead silence. They didn't even respond to Paypal. When I tried to contact them, their response to multiple online tickets was to send emails stating that nobody would see the request or respond and the ticket would be closed if I did not send another request by replying to their email. I did reply but nobody responded. After going to the gym and managing to attract the attention of someone (I could not get through the door with my account disabled without warning), they said they could not help with billling issues but it was likely that the payment had not been assigned to the account. They gave me a number to call the third party that handles their billing. Nice staff member but she was unable to help directly. After 3 phonecalls to the other company, the account was still disabled but now they had locked out a second account they'd decided to create for me, by using the same email address. I was assured during each call that this would now fix the issue and to wait 15 minutes for the changes to take effect. Eventually, they told me they would have to give me a refund and I would have to start the whole process over again with a new account, new email address and new payment. I asked for written confirmation that they would process a refund and they said they were unable to send anything out at all. I waited a few days and then raised a case with Paypal. I waited for a response to any of my many requests and The Gym Group ignored everything regarding the account being disabled. It's now past the deadline and Paypal have refunded me the full payment and I've been happily working out at a different gym who actually care about their customers and respond to them. My advice is to steer clear of them. This payment issue is known to The Gym Group staff as they were not surprised about it. Unfortunately, if there are issues, you wil likely be stonewalled and there's nobody you can contact that can fix it. *This is a review of my experience with The Gym Group and not an attempt to contact them or have a conversation. That time has passed. This is intended to share my experiences in order to inform other users.*

Positive experience: Good gym, never super busy. Open plan design, not too hot. 3 squat racks, multiple cable machines, good range of free weights, lots of cardio and resistance equipment. 4 stars due to decor being uninspiring and access to cleaning sprays and cloths is limited. I have never seen anyone wipe the equipment down before or after use.

Fantastic experience: Very good value for money, good range of machines and open 24/7. What's not to like?

Fantastic experience: My wife and daughter have been going here for about 3 months now. My wife being in her 50s and a little out of shape, was very nervous to begin with , and wouldn't go alone. Thanks to Reece helping her, she now has more confidence and is now able to attend by herself .

Fantastic experience: The Gym Group is a wonderful place to workout. It accommodates to all sizes and needs. The equipment is well looked after. The locker rooms are a tad small however, they are well managed. The staff are all well mannered and friendly. I have been doing pt sessions with Ayrton, whom has been passionate and supportive during sessions. Going to the gym is the highlight of my day.

Fantastic experience: Been loving my time here. I’ve been going for 7-8 months now and have seen incredible progress. Staff are really friendly and helpful and so are the gym goers. 24/7 hours allows very much needed schedule flexibility. 5/5, although clips get lost now and again.

Fantastic experience: Visited a few times when on holiday in Devon. Easy to buy a day pass for £9.99 and even better value if you buy a 3 day pass. Plenty of equipment and tons of parking. Reece the PT was really friendly and helpful when I had a couple of questions and helped me to use the body composition machine. Couple of areas they could improve would be reducing the day pass slightly (£6.99 feels a bit better) and adding lockers with pin codes for day visitors who are unlikely to have a padlock. Will definitely visit again next time I'm down here on holiday!

Fantastic experience: Really friendly gym with great staff. Plenty of equipment and even when busy you can usually get on a cardio or resistance machine. Membership also includes a number of classes.

Fantastic experience: I've been going to the gym here for over a year, and I've never had any issues with the staff or the people who go to the gym. I started chatting with Reece (the manager) because I was seeing him more and more since I always go at the same times. We started chatting, and from that, it resulted in me starting to do PT sessions with him. I've made a lot of progress, and my form has improved massively. I'm now using equipment that I would have been worried to use before. I highly recommend the gym and Reece.

Negative experience: They send you messages offering deals then charge you more when you sign up!

Negative experience: This rating is based on the maintenance of equipment. The gym provides a reasonable range of equipment, not over packed and the ambient music is low, however the air con is rarely set a reasonable level and repairs of equipment are far from satisfactory. One piece of kit, the upright stepper (of which there is only one) has been reported as broken over 8 weeks ago and still no repair has taken place. It has been reported to 2 different staff member and one of those even stated they would put an out of order sign on and keep it up to date with progress reports. Sadly it has not been done and the machine is still out of order. Come of The Gym Group get your act together Follow-up, as of November the kit was still neither labelled nor repaired and the staff give that blank look when asked about it. I made a complaint to Head Office …. Let see if they can fix it in December

Fantastic experience: Good atmosphere compared to most gyms, good range of equipment, vitamin water machine with live it membership which is reasonably priced & toilets cleaned regularly.

Negative experience: The front doors on this place absolutely do my head in, i couldn't get out a few weeks ago and I was genuinely panicking. Stood there for 15 minutes unable to leave

Fantastic experience: Really nice, clean and well equipped gym at a great price. Also love the cold drink machine at only £4/mo extra. Registration is quick and 24 hour access with PIN entry is a bonus. Only reason why I can't give it 5 stars is that there is only one set of lower weight dumbbells. 8, 10, 12, 14kg are popular weights and some mornings all of those are being used, so you end up having to use machines instead. 4 sets of adjustable dumbbells would solve the problem. Edit: Found that there are more sets of dumbbells hidden away upstairs so upping to 5 stars. Another set downstairs would be more convenient though.

Negative experience: While the kit and staff are great, in a recent “have your say” notice board, the following points have been ignored. Music: it’s TERRIBLE and of low audio quality - just thump thump thump. The fact that 99% of users wear headphones/earbuds should confirm this! Cleaning stations: Why have the number been reduced? It makes no sense and doesn’t encourage people to clean after use. Air conditioning: in an environment where you get hot, and as it’s now summer, why isn’t it cooler? Email: there is no way to email the gym. Can a specific Paignton Gym email address be put on your “meet the staff” notice board? Easy to make it better!

Fantastic experience: A great gym at a great price. The equipment is modern and well maintained and the whole place is clean. There are plenty of machines and other equipment and benches and weights etc so every exercise I can think of is catered for. It's purely a gym.... no pool or squash courts or sauna or Cafe. That suits us, but if you want those things there are other places to try, like Torbay Leisure Centre It's never too busy when we go, but you can check availability on the app beforehand if you come at peak times. We think it's the best gym in the area at a very competitive price

Positive experience: Three hours parking limit Which is fantastic , no registration faf, good clean gym , the staff were nice Downsides , no calves machines , no fixed( preloaded) v grip barbell for various exercises. --- The gym provided a calves machine which is nice. However, some members are stacking dumbbells near their benches which disrupts others use of them. All in all a positive experience

Positive experience: Love this gym, but getting in and out of the building is like the crystal maze. No one needs that stress before or after a workout. Also, far too many people are in there at any one time, so getting on the equipment is tricky.

Fantastic experience: Getting back to the gym has been a big turning point for my health and well-being. A major accident kept me immobile for a good while, massive shout out to Lewis Chaplin, the PT who has been working really hard me to help me achieve my goals.

Positive experience: Clean, good air con, great staff and hi grade equipment. Only downside is the music played is terrible. It’s the exact opposite to what any normal person listens to in the gym. I’d honestly rather listen to the Venga Boys on a heavy leg day. Make sure you have decent headphones. Other than that it’s 10/10 (Hex deadlift bars too) :)

Positive experience: Really clean with fairly new equipment. Nice, bright & colourful decor with free weights, machines & a cardio section with an upstairs area for classes & stretching or using the bag or ropes. The changing rooms are generally clean & they replaced the broken lockers. Nice atmosphere overall :) The 24 hour access is really useful too. Although, for some reason, they've made it so you have to put your code in for the automatic doors before entering to them enter your code a second time just to get in. They actually updated some equipment recently so it's got plenty of everything. If you need a double rope though, best to bring your own.

Fantastic experience: Only just joined but being open 24/7 Is great if you work shifts or have children you get your own code to gain entry

Negative experience: Although the gym itself is ok they do take ages to fix machines (treadmills out of action for weeks). However we had a problem with billing and then you do become just your pin number and they really don't care. They won't phone you, they promise to rectify and they don't. Won't be using again rather pay more and go to Winners.

Positive experience: Good workout nice clean gym, changing room is quite small tho.

Positive experience: When I first went, 95% of the patrons were wiping down discinfecting the equipment. Now COVID seems to be "over" and restrictions lifted, only about 55% are now doing this. The groups of patrons not bothering is varied, couples, boys and mates, girls and mates, old, young.There was even a bloke who I've seen wearing the Gym's kit, not wiping down. Staff aren't enforcing one the the basic rules. Also I've seen gents using the toilets and not bothering to wash their hands after,then going back onto the floor to use dumbbells, and other equipment. Come on Gym Group, please do something!
