Fantastic experience: Pure gym, gym group, trugym and the like are a waste of time compared to this gym... Could this be the best gym ever? Probably... If you're a professional bodybuilder then this gym is for you. I'm being picky but not for the wrong reasons, just that I've not seen any in the gym but 3 things I would like to see: 1. Plate loaded standing calf machine 2. Free standing shrug frame 3. Viking press machine/iso lateral standing shoulder press machine. Been here for about a month now and made massive improvements... Want to train for the Mr Olympia competition? Then come here... That's the quality of this gym...

Negative experience: Taken payment out my account once I settled it at the gym and now after speaking to them they said it will get refunded within 10-14 working days and now they saying it’s not getting refunded as it’s a miss communication. It’s a joke
Hi Charlie, It is really poor on your behalf to write a complete lie as a review for a business. Untrue reviews like this can cause real damage to businesses. The true account of events is pretty straight forward. You failed to make your direct debit payment for your membership fees due to insufficient funds in your bank account. Some confusion arose because you manually made the late payment several days later through the app when it had already been sent for a direct debit re-submission. We refunded your manual payment in-club and the direct debit payment for your missed payment was then taken later in the month. This has been explained to you by several members of the team. Our manager at Gateshead tried to clarify this all on the phone to you a few days ago and you rudely hung up on her mid-conversation and then posted this review. I would be more than happy to discuss this further with you to clarify any confusion about payments and show you clearly that you are not owed any refund nor have you made any payments beyond what were owed as part of your membership. Fantastic experience: I travel for work and visit many gyms and this is one of the best I've ever visited. I highly recommend a visit. Rather than day passes I paid £20 for a week which is an excellent deal. A top tier gym with a fantastic range of Hammerstrength equipment (plate loaded and resistance). This gym is huge and caters for all areas of lifting, body building and fitness. They also have a small range of supplements. The gym is 12 years old and well used but the equipment is clearly very well maintained! It was busy but I didn't have to wait long for machines... there are also just multiple options if you're happy to switch up your program/workout.

Negative experience: When youve been to ultraflex, sadly everything else is simply downhill. Music was non existent and heard louder sony Walkmans from the 80’s. Tinny and poor quality. No real atmosphere despite it being 5pm. Gym changing rooms are dated and miles away.
Thanks for the review Findley. It is a shame to hear that you haven't enjoyed using our facilities but all feedback is useful. We are quite a different gym to Ultraflex and tend to appeal to different people. We have never had someone say our music is too quiet or there is no atmosphere but everyone has their own personal preferences. The changing facilities were revamped just before Covid, and while we would never claim they are 5-star, they are more than fit for purpose.
Positive experience: Probably the best gym in Newcastle! Fairly priced and they have every equipment you need. Only one thing that I'm not really fan of is the music, which is often so incredibly loud that I can hear it through my own headphones even when my own music is set to max volume. Front desk turns it down a notch every time requested though but generally the music could be less loud by default :)

There is another review after yours claiming it was too quiet. It is hard for us to please everyone with the volume of music and what gets played but I hope that it did not intrude on your experience too much.
Positive experience: Returned to VHF for the range of equipment and convenient membership options. Great powerlifting area and new strongman area. There are plenty of wipes for machines and the toilets are clean, the rest of the gym is a bit grotty. Chalk handprints on the walls, chalk all over the lifting platform and squat rack, the bag shelves smelled like sweaty shoes and half of the sanitiser dispensers were empty. Perhaps I have high standards but even pre covid I would find the poor cleanliness off-putting.
Thanks for the review Sophie. It is always a challenge in a gym the size of ours to keep on top of the cleaning. We do our very best and have regular cleaning schedules for the staff along with having a full-time cleaner. In a big old warehouse type building like this it will never be perfect. It was a real challenge keeping sanitiser and wipes in stock during the Covid periods and often the lack of anything was due to a shortage in the supply. The sanitiser dispensers would break often from the high volume of use. It was costly and almost impossible to keep on top off. The chalk situation is unfortunately down to members and their use and respect for the gym. We clean everything and 1 hour later chalk is everywhere from the powerlifting area and it is extremely hard to get the white hand prints of black painted concrete. As for a sweaty shoe smell on the bag rack, it could very well be that people have left sweaty shoes in their bag and that is something beyond our control. I hope that none of it ruined your gym experience too much and that you still consider using our gyms.

Fantastic experience: Best gym I've been to in years! Staff are friendly and helpful and make the effort to get to know their customers by name. The classes are mint, really good mix of different sessions from pilates to boxing to spin. The gym itself is clean and tidy. Theres great gym etiquette where everyone puts back the weights etc, wipes machinery down and looks out for one another. As a woman it's not intimidating, theres lots of other women working out and using the weights and machinery too, it feels very inclusive and welcoming. I cannot fault this place 10/10!

Positive experience: Overall, this is a great gym, it’s got great kit for both weightlifting and powerlifting and a ton of machines. However, I do have a few issues: there are only men’s 20kg weightlifting bars, there’s no women’s bar. They do however, have a 10kg technique bar, which can only have 40kg loaded onto it. This means that any female that uses 50kg+ for their lifts has to use a men’s bar. This is problematic because the circumference of the bar is much thicker, meaning that for females (as we typically have smaller hands) actually using a men’s bar is extremely hard if not impossible (especially for the snatch). Although they have another 15kg bar, this is not a high level Eleiko bar (like the men’s; there’s 2!) and is extremely old and has extremely poor knurling. Expecting females to use this bar when the men have 2 high level eleiko bars is sexist. This issue has been raised with management previously, too. This gym takes pride in their accommodation to several different sports (weightlifting, powerlifting, CrossFit, boxing and bodybuilding), yet falls short in a few areas. For example, there is no PVC pipe. PVC pipes are crucial to mobility and technique work in Olympic weightlifting and when asked if I could bring in my own, was told that I couldn’t because of insurance purposes- which doesn’t make much sense considering the fact that people bring in their own resistance bands which are probably more of a hazard than a pipe that weighs about 500g. When this was brought up to a member of staff, they tried to tell me that PVC pipes aren’t necessary and that it ‘wouldn’t give me a real feel for the Olympic lifts as they are so light’- which every Olympic lifter knows is absolute nonsense-to be honest, I felt as though the member of staff was mansplaining this when in fact, it’s just not correct. Additionally, the powerlifting area has 4 wooden platforms, which isn’t needed and is in fact a detriment to performance due to its grip and width. The sole purpose of these platforms is for Olympic weightlifting yet the weightlifting area only has one platform (which is raised from the floor slightly meaning that people are lifting from a very small deficit). These things have all been raised previously with management. These flaws are a real shame because if these issues were sorted, this gym would be ace.
Hi Cara, Thanks for your review and the feedback, it is always appreciated. I'll try and touch on each of the points you have raised but please feel free to speak to me in the gym when you are next in. It was myself you spoke to about the bars and pipe, and I can assure there was no mansplaining involved. My points on the PVC pipe and mobility/movement patterns still hold and I would be happy to expand further on what I meant if it was misinterpreted as me being dismissive. I promise that was not the case. As you mention we do have 1 15kg bar and at some point in the future we will add some additional bars for a variety of uses including the female specific bars. The lack of them currently has nothing to do with us being sexist, it is simply a case of finances. We have had a horrendous past 12 months with the impact of Covid, as have most businesses, and we are only a small family run business so don't have unlimited resources. We are not a dedicated powerlifting or olympic lifting centre nor do we receive any form of sports funding to support this. The addition of the Eleiko range was a decision we took based on the initial demand we had. It was very much commercial in nature and we have to start somewhere. As much as we would love to just buy several of everything from the Eleiko catalogue we can't and commercial decisions must be made in order of priority. That is not to say that men or women come first, either. I appreciate you find a PVC pipe useful for your mobility work but we have to draw a line somewhere as to what we can accommodate. Unfortunately this will always be to the disliking of some people and it can't be helped. If we tried to accommodate every request or preference we could not run our business. The wooden platforms were again a cost consideration. Dedicated Eleiko platforms come at a considerable cost and while we will install them at some point we always have to weigh the balance between the cost of the investment against the return on that investment. The small raise you mention is literally 2-3mm and I would say that the deficit is negligible and will not impact training in anyway. I feel we offer a phenomenal facility for the membership fees we charge and you will not find anything in the area that offers close to what we already offer and we are always trying to improve it. I appreciate you pay your membership for your training but I do feel that while your points may have some validity from an athletes perspective, our gyms have to cater to everyone, and that context is being missed here. If we were a dedicated olympic lifting facility or crossfit gym then I think they would be a totally fair criticism but I do feel they are a little harsh in this instance, especially given the difference in cost between our memberships and a crossfit box or athletic training facility. Fantastic experience: This is easily the best gym I`ve ever visited. Most of the staff are very friendly and helpful and the range of equipment is amazing. Brand new Eleiko kit and more machines than you could ever ask for. You wont find a more reasonably priced gym in the North East, however bring headphones as the playlist selection tends to be awful.

I am sorry to hear you aren't a fan of the music but we do try to stick with commercial pop/dance music and not have it too loud so you can use headphones if preferred. With so many people visiting and the variety of tastes it is extremely challenging to play music that is too everyones liking. Feel free to drop a suggestion in to reception when you are next in though and we will take it on-board.

Fantastic experience: Good gym, huge selection of hammer strength plate loaded and stack machines. A massive amount of free weight plates and dumbbells, which go up to 60k. Good Changing room and toilet facilities. Only negative is that it can get extremely busy at peak times, even with the vast array of machinery and space. However this is to be expected as this is a testament to the popularity of the gym due to the above and the exceptional value for money. Definitely one of the best gyms in the North East, having been a former bodybuilder I have trained in quite a few so have decent judgment on such things.

Top specialized brands such as Eleiko which are used in the very top personal training gyms around the world can be seen here. It's my go-to every time I return home to visit. Negative experience: They have switched the gym around in a way that makes no sense. I have found the staff to be friendly but the layout throws you. Treadmills should have been moved back so you could see TV clearer but they moved them back and turned them so you're watching the weight lifters instead. So sure, bring head phones and watch or listen to your own entertainment but the background music is so loud that is all you hear. Equipment has been made new though which is nice. I have also tried to contact by email and phone and neither option works. Work out the communication access for your place of business please.
Hi Kim, We are very sorry to hear you don't like the new layout. You are the first person to mention it at all. It was set so that you aren't facing a grey wall anymore on the treadmills. The current setup is part of a full gym refurbishment. Unfortunately to avoid major disruption or shutdown, this has to be done in stages. One of the final part of the refurbishment is to add a custom fence in front of the treadmills with lighting and TV's. The old audio system did get a touch on the loud side we agree, this was due to it playing through 3 large club style speakers. We have since addressed this by installing a new audio system with 14 smaller speakers located throughout to provide evenly distributed background music, without being to loud. Being a small family run business we have to prioritise works that we do in order of importance but we are forever improving and a 2 star review for the above seems very unfair. You are of course entitled to you opinion and we value the feedback. I would like to stress that this year alone we have invested in brand new cardio equipment, a full range of brand new Hammer Strength equipment, Eleiko lifting area, 50 new ICG IC7 spin bikes with a full refurb of the spin room, new flooring, the roof has been repaired, the changing rooms revamped with additional heating, and, just this week a new heating and cooling system installed to the main studio. I don't think you will find another gym who re-invests back in to their club like we do. The email is working fine but we have had issues with our phone lines recently. This is unfortunately a fault at the end of our provider and beyond our control. It is as frustrating for us as it is for customers and we are actively pursuing an alternative solution to address the problem. You can also always contact us via social media on either Facebook or Instagam where a member of our team will ensure you get a prompt response. We try our very best to provide a first class gym experience and provide excellent customer service. Why should members be subjected to listen To music that they don’t like and not able to listen to their own. Fantastic experience: So much better value than 'Better' gyms. Big selection of free weights (up to 60kg I've seen), loads of bench, a massive range of plate loading machines which are great quality - solid hammer strength ones. Plenty of cardio equipment. Negative experience: Liked the gym but i got an email saying i’d recieved a free trial but still hadn’t signed up, I didn’t receive a free trial, i paid £10 to get in which when you consider other gyms charge £4-5 is extortionate, when i looked into joining there was also a joining fee which other gyms have never charged me Reply to owners reply: BHP charge £4 a session, no joining fee, Goldstar £5 a session, no joining fee, Axis £8 a session, no joining fee, Valour £4 a session, no joining fee, Allsports £5 a session, no joining fee, if you’re going to give free trials do it on the day a person turns up

Very unfair review Colin, you signed a 12 month agreement, called stating you had an ankle injury and were unable to attend the gym anymore as a result of this. Staff advised we could cancel or freeze the membership upon receiving proof, a doctors letter would suffice, to this date nothing has been received. We offer a fair contract policy and had you sent the information we would have either frozen or cancelled the contract. Your negligence to provide the relevant documentation has led to this situation.

Fantastic experience: Quality Gym plenty of weights, machines and cardio machines . Also lots of classes at all times of the day. And free parking. Staff friendly and helpful.

Negative experience: Loads of equipment and great selection of kit, sadly the customer service massively lets this place down and was advised by friends not to join based on this, which at first I didn't see, but it eventually shined through and it's clear customer satisfaction is not at the forefront of priorities sadly. Edit: The aggression in the response below only amplifies my point. Spin the story anyway you want, I am more than happy to tell my version of events. When I signed up to the gym I made it very clear that I would not be seeing my 12 month contract out and asked the member of staff on the desk if this would be OK and how I would properly go about doing this. She reassured me it was easy, that it wasn't a problem and I just had to prove how far away I was moving. That we can agree on. Ultimately after going backwards and forwards via email with your management company, I paid for my last full month, was recommended to cancel my direct debit, and did so. The management company cancelled my membership straight away, which was incorrect as I had paid until the end of the month. My next visit to the gym I tried to explain that to someone on the front desk, who called the management company to clarify, and was granted entry with the proviso that there were notes on my account so I wouldn't have to explain this situation each time. It turns out there were no notes on my account. Each time I wanted to use the gym, for the rest of the month that I had paid for, I was verbally bullied and abruptly refused entry. The original member of staff who dealt with me, ignored me when he saw me struggling to get in each time. All I wanted to do was use the gym that I HAD PAID FOR. There were no 'free entries'. At no point was there aggression, just frustration at the incompetence of the customer service and lack of communication between yourselves. If I had ever received a contract, this whole situation would have been smoother. Usually when negative feedback is received, it is taken as constructive criticism to better your services and improve the face of the company.
Oh Adam, if only you explained the full story then this review would perhaps have some merit. You requested that your membership be cancelled, whilst you were still within your 12 month agreement, as you were relocating abroad. In keeping with our ‘terms & conditions’ you were asked to provide proof, upon receipt of which, your membership was duly cancelled. After this you continued to come to the gym and attempted to get free access. As a gesture of goodwill this was given on a couple of occasions. After a few free courtesy sessions your were then refused ‘free’ entry as your membership had been cancelled for over 2 weeks. Upon being refused entry you were extremely rude to staff and have since seen it fit to leave a very unfair 1 star review. Adam you were given entry for the month you paid for, there is no aggression at all in the response, we honoured what we agreed and terminated the membership, you tried to abuse the position and enter as you partner had not yet cancelled and you tried to gain free access after the month you paid for. As we are paperless, you were emailed a copy of your contract. You were very rude to staff. Let’s just agree to disagree.
