Fantastic experience: My son suggested we visit this spot as clip and climb had become a bit too easy for him. I figured it was a decent chance to get out the house for an hour, but ended up being there for about 3 hours as we were having such a good time! The walls are a great mix of difficulties, with some super challenging parts. The staff are great, Gareth made us both feel super relaxed during the 'first timer' tour and explained everything really well. The cafe has a great menu, and was a lot better than I had thought it would be, based on experience of other activity places with on site cafes. Even on a Saturday when there are lots of people there, the atmosphere was really chill and there was plenty of room to move about and pick climbing routes. Great music (at an unintrusive volume) in the background and just a super chilled out vibe from everyone there, including the other members. Signed up for the very reasonable monthly membership on our way out, can't wait to go back!

Fantastic experience: The Climbing Hangar Plymouth is a great bouldering venue. There is a comprehensive warm up and training area, a large number of bouldering problems, a fantastic cafe, a small shop and even a ping pong table. Parking is free and there is enough of it.

Fantastic experience: Came here for the climbing, stayed for the food - absolutely stellar. Was blown away by the quality.

Fantastic experience: My 4yo is really enjoying the home ed rock mini. We'll definitely become regulars. Connor is great with the kids. The onsite cafe is a great space to come at the end and with many vegan options, well done

Fantastic experience: Amaaaazing bouldering gym. Probably the best in the south west. Well set boulder problems, with a nice mix of styles. What's really special about the Climbing Hangar is that they set routes to really accommodate new climbers. Even if you're just starting out, there are plenty of climbs to enjoy. And the climbs scale nicely up to the really tough projects, too. The cafe has some of the best pizzas, toasties, coffee, and cakes, too! The staff are all super friendly and there are plenty of community events. Update 2024: TCH Plymouth is going strong as ever. Amazing routes to suit a wide range of skills, from beginner to expert. The cafe is awesome as always, with some of the best sourdough you can get. Hard to go wrong by going for a climb, a pizza, sole coffee and a homemade cookie. Only downside really is the bathrooms are not very well maintained, based on initial cheap installation.

Fantastic experience: I've been coming here for 12 months now and I can't recommend it enough! Climbs to suit all abilities. The holds in each area change on rotation. Great team on-site, friendly and approachable. Shout-out to Gareth who knows our coffee order off by heart!

Andy Coley 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Had a great time whilst visiting relatives in the area at the hanger, my kids loved the mini climb class, the instructor Mahri was brilliant and they had a good warmup in the training room before they went to the main walls. Greta setup, very clean and fantastic cafe. The bacon butties were lush. Highly recommended for newbies and mountain goats.

Fantastic experience: This gym has very interesting and fun setting, with plenty of variety in types of climbing. It's decently sized with a moon board, kilter board and some very basic gymnastics equipment. The cafe serves some delicious food and drinks and is reasonably priced

Ashley James 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff and a relaxed environment! The on-site cafe provides hot and cold drinks and food while the bouldering area is very generously sized and has problems for all levels of ability. Lockers, toilets, showers and small gym are all available on site.

Fantastic experience: Had a lovely experience today with our 9 year old who has ASD. The staff picked up really quickly that he needed some extra help, Mari (hopefully that’s the right spelling) and Gareth in particular were extremely helpful. They joked with him, Mari kept checking in to see how we were doing and even got him a drink of water and a plaster. One of the most inclusive places we have visited. When we asked if he enjoyed himself he gave it a ‘five star’ and said he loved everything about it. Thank you

Fantastic experience: Really great space, good fun and suitable for all ages and abilities! Food and drinks are pretty expensive so if you’re a family on a budget you might want to eat first, with that said the food is delicious so I would say the price is reflected in the quality! Would definitely recommend ☺️

Negative experience: First time at a "TCH" venue, wasn't overly impressed. When having the grading system explained I was told "we don't have a grading system as such", I now know why. The range was very odd, some that were supposedly V5 equivalent were more like V2 and some V5s were more like V8s. The walls were very empty also, so less sets means more waiting time at busy times. With the venue not as big as other bouldering gyms, to not fill the walls with more sets seems counterintuitive. Then in the cafe, even with what seems like 4 or 5 staff members working, it took almost 30 minutes to get served for just a coffee and a cake. Only been once, but was disappointed by that once sadly.

Fantastic experience: Every necessaries are included in the subscription, I dont need to prepare much when coming. The cafe has reasonable price and good hot choc :D Social events are a big plus here

Fantastic experience: Fantastic centre, plenty of variety in routes for adults and kids. Would recommend for beginners in particular as they have a qr code system on select routes that you scan for a video teaching you techniques for progressing on the harder routes Friendly staff, nice cafe, couldn't ask for more, look forward to returning

Fantastic experience: Great climbing and training area and super friendly staff. Jamie makes the best bread and meals I want him to be the father of my children. Jack is also such a hunk and makes great food as well.

Fantastic experience: The staff are the most funny friendly people I’ve ever met. Took my kids for the first time this weekend and I couldn’t have had a better experience. I only came for a taster day with some friends and ended up buying two subscriptions for my boys! Would 100% recommend

Fantastic experience: I cannot express how much I love the atmosphere and the people here. It has become such a welcomed part of my life and the community is excellent. The staff are always friendly and helpful and oh my god is the food good! The focaccia? To die for. I would happily eat the whole display. Love it at TCH always.

Fantastic experience: A social place for beginners, novice and advance/pros, all whist gaining confidence in climbing. Fantastic experience: The hanger is great I typically go to the one closer to me in Exeter however I had just as much fun in the bigger Plymouth climbing centre. Me and some friends went for the day and got some very good pizza and smoothies after doing a good variety of climbs, some volumes, crimps, pinches, dynos, comps and moor. I specifically loved the overhangs with climbs for a variation of skill levels.

Fantastic experience: Really friendly and helpful staff running a great indoor climbing centre. Amazing food and drink options in their cafe as well. Highly recommend for anyone from beginner like us to experienced climber wanting to get some practice in

Francesca Foster 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: This was the first time for me doing anything like this, went with my family who live in New Zealand as they are back in England and enjoy climbing out there, so it was a family morning out! Staff were so friendly (Jazz sorted our induction, and she was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful). The food was also fantastic, lots of vegan and gluten free options for anyone with dietary preferences. There were five of us, I would add it did come out separately, but this really wasn't an issue as the food was a treat and not something we went for specifically, but we will definitely have food again. We will be back!

Fantastic experience: Been climbing here for around 6 months now and couldn't be happier. Route setting is great and zones are changed regularly to keep things fresh. All the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Great facilities with a shop for all your gear needs, a café that serves delicious food, clean changing facilities, warm up/training areas, a separate room for the little ones and more. Overall just a fantastic climbing gym, highly recommended!

Josh Kopeček 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: A superb bouldering gym. Really outstanding route-setting, probably the best in the region - a really good range for all abilities. Plenty of space for all the routes, and a really wide range of slabs and overhangs. There really is something for everyone. The café is also superb, great coffee and cakes! Large warm up and training area with a great selection of equipment. Table tennis in the entrance hall as well! Highly recommended.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely amazing! Took my son, and his friends, to celebrate his birthday in there. The staff at the reception was absolutely amazing - definitely knew how to deal with 'almost' teenagers (sorry, don't remember your name)! Atmosphere was great. There is plenty of space for everyone for any level of climbing. Watching the kiddies made me want to try it myself. Definitely will be back!!!

Fantastic experience: Always wanted to have a go but wasn’t sure how much I could actually do. The staff make you feel very welcome, there’s no need to be apprehensive, there’s a nice cafe and nobody is judging you, just enjoying themselves. There’s lots and lots of climbing routes to chose from for all abilities so it’s all good. I’ve joined as a member now and so has my daughter and we try go 2 - 3 times a week for about 45mins and both have noticed a dramatic improvement. Way more fun than going to the gym, but you will ache all over the next day……or several days.

Joe Alzapiedi 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Been my 5th visit to the center, I don't get to go often due to work but it's always a great atmosphere and very enjoyable climbing experience. This time I took my 2 children for their first climb while visiting from up country and special mention to Tash who gave a fun and interactive brief which helped them get into it and checked in regularly to see how they were getting on. Can't thank you enough for that.

Robert Hinchley 1 year ago

Positive experience: Great routes, all updated regularly, very professional and friendly staff. Being able to borrow shoes included with your climb cost/membership is a real nice touch. Only niggles are: membership isn't cheap and some classes (e.g. circuits) aren't included. The cost of a single visit is prohibitive for most. Strangely late opening on Saturday and Sunday mornings (1000) compared to gyms, grotty showers with broken heads (and the car park is shot to pieces!)

Alex Lockwood 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Nicely laid out gym with some really cool, creative setting for intermediate boulderers. The Cafe area is huge and spacious and they did a first class BLT and Octoberfest beer after our session. Note to parents: Different to other gyms small children aren't permitted into the main bouldering area, so don't go on your own with your kid, go with your other half or with another adult so you can tag-team. Overall a great morning out, will be back next time we're in Plymouth.

Fantastic experience: Went for an induction session with my 9yr old son. Staff were really helpful, safety briefing efficient and tailored to individual experience. Lots of routes for all abilities. Nice café.

Fantastic experience: I went climbing here multiple times! Great place with easy, and Olympic level climbs, very good place to learn bouldering! (Photos of me climbing and 1/2 of park)! They even have a small area for smaller children! Perfect for young climbers!

Fantastic experience: Great atmosphere. Bigger than the Exeter branch with better facilities and greater variation in routes and holds. Route setting quality was very high, similarly to the Exeter branch. Plenty of climbing for everyone, beginner and advanced boulderers alike. Staff were super friendly, especially Gareth, whom we chatted with for quite a while. Plenty of room in the cafe, which was well set out with sofas and chairs. Table tennis was a plus too. There’s also plenty of parking spaces. It was worth the extra drive, coming from Taunton. We will certainly be back again, with the Plymouth branch having a number of advantages of the Exeter branch, in terms of staff, space, parking etc. Just wish it was closer!

Jon Bishop 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: An amazing facility that is clean, modern and well equipped. There is ample free parking right out front. The route setting is excellent with an easy to use colour coded system. The Service was excellent and we were really well looked after. The cafe is excellent also. The day rate is not cheap, but the monthly membership is extremely good value. As with most things you get what you pay for !!

Negative experience: Very nice place to climb and everything, but every time I come here for coffee or food the waiting time to be served is absolutely ridiculous, even if there isn’t a queue. Six people were on shift today, most of them chatting with each other, and I’ve waited to be served 7 minutes whilst staff was also making eye contact with me.

Algernon Winklebottom 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: I have been to the Climbing Hanger many times, from the induction to my last climb it is a well run, polite and safe environment for people of all ages and bouldering climbs that will tax the very experienced to the beginner. Another good place to check out is Exeter Quay climbing, not as good for bouldering but for roped climbs and clip and climb it is superb.

Positive experience: This is a great place for all levels of climbers. They're have a friendly team that are so welcoming and accommodating. A lovely café suited for those have to wait / chill with fam" and hang with mates or even want to extend date. Pros -informative and helpful -kids only zone "a separated area" for young climbers -super cheap -free shoes with booking and option to rent upgrade or buy -even have a cross fit bouldering gym (warm up/ training area) -nice walls -safe, relaxed, fun, informative and friendly Cons (though they're very minuscule, but just saying...) - You'll need a car its out the way -can get busy in some time slots -fill forms before hand. it can take a while or get there 30mis early -dynamic style of climbing not suited to all but fun nevertheless , you'll swing, reach, leap and cut some shapes. -lockers aren't great so leave valuables in car/ home or travel light for own peace of mind RECOMMEND TO ALL; free runners and gymnasts, parent child or newbies and OGs Place to go to anytime in Plymouth

Alaric Wood 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Fantastic bouldering centre that offers a wide range of bouldering grades to suit everyone from beginners through to competition grade climbers. Big car park with plenty of spaces so no worries about struggling to find somewhere to park. Really friendly staff and a great cafe as well make it well worth visiting.

Fantastic experience: Can't recommend this place enough. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It was my first time so I was shown around by a lovely member of staff who made me feel very welcome, and everything was explained very clearly. She even checked how I was doing later in the evening. Didn't try the food but the drinks were tasty so I expect the food is too. Will definitely be going again once my blisters heal

Fantastic experience: Came to a birthday party here for the first time. Was such a cool place, such a variety of walls to use. The kids instructor was brilliant, started off with warm ups and in the child's room which they loved. Then into the main room. He was so down to earth and interactive with them, putting them at ease straight away. Finished with certificates. After the staff even let my little one help tidy up and sort the shoes. We sat in the cafe, great selection of food and drinks. Pizzas were a big hit. Parking onsite Toilets and showers Cafe Will be back again 100%.

Fantastic experience: Love The Climbing Hanger and we are members who are lucky enough to be between both Exeter and Plymouth so we regularly visit both. Plymouth is great for access with a huge free carpark and step free access. There is a nice sized cafe with the usual relaxed Hanger vibe where dogs are welcome and there are better bathroom facilities there than in Exeter with showers too which means you can truly hang out there all day! There’s a table tennis table and a gym and workout area plus a great shop for merch. For climbing it is brilliant of course.. tons and tons of wall space with plenty of room to sit and study your course and hang with friends, loads of levels, loads of variety and lots of bouldering arches to boot.. Staff are friendly and helpful too.. it’s a special place and we love it.

Positive experience: Our first visit to The Climbing Hangar necessitated a one-off induction session by a member of staff. The staff, while friendly and approachable, were not very effective, and after being told that someone would be over to show us around, my climbing partner and I were left waiting for around 5-7 minutes until I asked the member of staff on the till if someone was coming to lead our induction, which he then did for us. During our time waiting we witnessed a number of members of staff socialising, making us feel like we weren't a priority to them. After this disappointing first impression, the facilities themselves were very good. We enjoyed a range of climbing on some pleasingly varied walls and features and are impressed with what was on offer. Overall a good experience and we would happily visit again, although as an experienced climber, the mandatory induction seemed a little pointless and could probably be replaced by an online induction form - similar to most other climbing centers I have visited, especially since (combined with waiting to be seen) this ended up taking away time from our pre-booked climbing slot.

Fantastic experience: Amazing climbing centre! Setting is awesome, super friendly staff, and a good variety of routes! The cafe is amazing - super nice food at a decent price as-well!
