Fantastic experience: This is a largely intact PoW camp from WW2 that is now owned by the local community through a trust. Many of the Nissan Huts are used for commercial purposes such as small businesses and even self catering rentals however one houses a museum and another a cafe. We called in on spec on a Sunday with no expectations and were initially underwhelmed however on locating the museum and meeting Tommo, an ex-military volunteer guide, we quickly fell under the spell of the place. I won’t spoil it for you, only to suggest that this place may well tell us more about the war than any history lesson or Hollywood epic. The stories are moving and engaging. We loved it, even with its rough edges, it is a gem of a place that fills a gap in our understanding of the war that few of us knew existed. Unbelievably it is free, although a £5 donation is suggested if affordable. Do visit if passing by on the A85.

Fantastic experience: I loved this place, so cool with all the history and the surrounding countryside. There is so much to do around the area and a lovely walk into Comrie through the woods along the river. We stayed in one of the converted Nissan Huts, and i loved it. Nearby activities: You can swim in the river, there is a really cool bit where the locals go, it's called the Linn, i think. You can hire bikes from Comrie Croft, which isn't far away, and there are loads of beautiful walks around the area. Walkability: You can walk down the main road into Comrie which takes about 30 mins or take the walk along the river, which takes a bit longer as you'll be stopping to snap pics as it's very beautiful.

Fantastic experience: We have just returned home from a wonderful two night stay at Cultybraggen Camp. The accommodation was amazing; spacious, clean very well equipped and soooo cosy. The camp site was very interesting especially the museum. The area was beautiful and the walk along the river to Comrie with the dog was so relaxing. Definitely would recommend this and hope to revisit soon.

Fantastic experience: We stayed in the camp for 2 nights, cannot fault anything beautiful self catering hut, very peaceful and interesting place to stay, the museum on site was very informative and interesting Rooms: We stayed in hut 36, was absolutely, unusual, quirky beautiful everything you needed, was very warm and had table and chairs to sit outside if weather permitting Nearby activities: Museum on site, run by volunteers, there's a cafe on site too but wasn't open unfortunately, also some business units a bakery for fresh bread etc, wine unit too

Fantastic experience: Cultybraggan Camp near Comrie is well worth a visit, with an interesting museum focusing on its role as a prisoner of war camp in WW2, and a good café, which was also good value. The service in the café was friendly and helpful, including to the dogs. Plenty of parking and good walking nearby. You can access the River Linn, but the path is narrow and not recommended unless you're pretty fit and flexible. There is a wild swimming area on the Linn but it's best accessed via Comrie and the other side of the river where you can park close to the swimming area. The opening hours are a bit restrictive, only opening late morning so best to check. Not sure if open out of season.

Fantastic experience: We stayed in cabin 36 (one of the 5 self-catering huts on offer), and we had a really enjoyable stay. We booked through AirBnB and got a fantastic price for our 3 day/long weekend trip at the camp. The camp itself is so deeply interesting and peaceful to be in/walk around (ironic given its past). The accommodation’s facilities were superb and it was immaculate. We can’t wait to return. Rooms: Immaculately presented with fantastic range of facilities provided. Safety: You feel very safe and it’s so quiet/serene and peaceful. Walkability: Beautiful site which is easily explorable on foot and is lovely to walk around

Expectacular

Positive experience: Fascinating place that is now used by local businesses and has a small cafe. We didn’t manage to visit the museum but stopped to look around and had a scone at the cafe.

Paul Finch 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Modern comfort in the style of a POW camp. The accommodation manages to pull both the aesthetic of a WWII era prisoner of war camp with modern minimalist interiors. The derelict buildings give the site an authentic feel, there are businesses operating out of some of the units that makes the site feel like a community. Close to Comrie there are great amenities including a local fish and chip shop.

Positive experience: Have been wanting to go here for years and finally made it. Enjoyed walking about the site unfortunately the museum wasn't open as it doesn't open until April. Will try and get back . Great we cafe onsite lovely food.

Fantastic experience: The day was peaceful, we had a good relaxing walk around with plenty to read and see the history that surrounds the camp. We did bring our own lunch but we had a cup of tea and a home made scone from the cafe. The woman in the cafe was very friendly.

Claire Henvey 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: The camp was very interesting with a museum funded by a German ex prisoner of war. There was a small viking festival on when we went which was ok, re-enactment was good but there were no activities or stalls to buy stuff other than a craft shop on the barrack grounds. Cafe in site was busy and had a good menu with home baking which was great. Worth the hour and a half trip from Paisley.

Elizabeth Sansom 1 year ago

Positive experience: Only a short visit probably too late in the day. But definitely looks very a interesting place. Lots of potential for small businesses and refurbished Nissan huts for holiday lets.

Fantastic experience: Lovely little museum. Very informative and loved the personal stories of the POW who stayed there. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Honesty box entrance fee, but you can pay by card. Free parking. Would highly recommend if you have an hour or so free. The surroundings are stunningly beautiful and Comrie is s lovely little place to visit.

Fantastic experience: Cool place to visit. We stayed in the self catering huts. Everything you need. Very beautiful surroundings. Also visited the museum, lots of history from people who actually were imprisoned here! Only down side is the rest of the site doesn't look amazing, bit industrial. Also the cattle grid at the entrance to the site makes a loud noise when cars drive over it. Hopefully they will be able to put some rubber underneath it to try and reduce the noise.

Nomie B 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: The only preserved Prisoner of War camp in the UK, so much history as all the buildings are still as they were. Great museum and you can even stay in one of the huts (as we did) which are completely refurbished. Definitely recommend visiting this place.

Angus Beacom 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Terrific place to visit and well worth taking a trip off of the main road to get there. We spent a few hours during our visit, soaking up the atmosphere and seeing the artefacts in the museum. No visit would be complete without a cup of tea and a sausage in a roll from the cafe. Staff were very knowledgeable and pleasant. Being dog friendly allowed us to take our fur kid along too.

Positive experience: Had a nice wander around for a YouTube video. Good to see small companies using old huts for businesses. Probably worth a revisit when the visitor centre opens back up again.

John Rundell 2 years ago

Positive experience: The drive to cultybraggan has some stunning scenery. As you arrive all you can see are huts. The car park isn't the biggest but they use the playing field as an overflow. The museum is not very big but it has lots to see and do. From dressing up in soldiers/helicopter pilots uniform. To trying to work a Morse code machine. The pictures on the walls are done by pow and there letters that they wrote as well. There is the story of two people that were murdered at the camp. Most of the huts have new purposes as small independent business. Some have been made in to sleep accommodation that can be let out. There is a wee wood craft centre and Jim that runs, it lets kids or adults have a try at building small animals out of wood from scratch. There is a nuclear bunker but unfortunately it's not open which is a bit of a shame as it would have added something different. There is a pizza and cafe place to get something to eat but prices are a bit on the pricey side. Its free to visit but donation are appreciated.

Positive experience: Fantastic idea the camp is a work in progress the museum is interesting and the cafe is worth a visit really lovely great service and the food is good quality and delicious I had pancakes with bacon and maple syrup my daughter and Grandson both had breakfast rolls with extra filling very reasonable priced don't feel your getting ripped off my Greatgrandson said the caramel shortbread was delicious . You can also hire out a hut for a holiday they looked really comfortable if you're in area definitely pay a visit

Martin Corley 2 years ago

Positive experience: An ex-POW camp taken over by the community, with a small-but-intriguing museum, and a lot of other activity (small businesses, holiday lets, allotments) developing on-site. The museum is full of carefully-researched stories and (small) artefacts such as letters etc. It probably won't detain kids very long in its present state, but for those interested in WWII or even just social history, there's quite a bit worth seeing/reading.

Will H 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: We stayed at the air b n b site the newly renovated huts. The huts are beautifully appointed a real bit of somewhere quirky but high end place to stay. All the locals we brilliant on site, we also enjoyed all the walks around the camp and learning about its history. We would love to return and see the ongoing developments on the site

Fantastic experience: Superb weekend up at the ROC Nuclear Bunker. (FAO Cultybraggan , there are two Nuclear bunkers at Cultybraggan. One a large complex owned by a communications company and this one photographed here, a ROC Bunker) Note the photos quite clearly show the small ROC Bunker and not the large bunker owned by Bogons

CrossFit Cultybraggan

Hi John - Can I just clarify for other readers that the nuclear bunker at Cultybraggan is privately owned by an internet service provider and, as such, not open to the public. However, we're pleased you had a good weekend.

Nicola Wall 4 years ago

Positive experience: Okay if you like history. I think a lot more could be done with this place as its a bit lacking. More setting the scene and a little less leaving to the imagination. A large part us used for local businesses to use as storage/workshop space.
