Our comment from FitFit UK about Everlast Gyms - Newcastle, Byker:
Everlast Gyms - Newcastle in Byker has garnered mixed reviews from its patrons. On one hand, many users appreciate the friendly and helpful staff, highlighting their dedication to providing a positive experience. The gym features a variety of classes and has a spacious layout that can accommodate lots of room to work out.
However, the facility is facing significant challenges. Users report on the poor condition of gym equipment, with many machines being outdated or frequently out of order. The swimming pool is also criticized for being cold and lacking maintenance, with the jacuzzi and steam room often dysfunctional.
Several members expressed their disappointment regarding management practices and the lack of effective communication, particularly regarding membership policies. Furthermore, concerns about cleanliness and hygiene in changing areas have been raised.
Despite these issues, some members remain loyal, enjoying the amenities that are still functional and the welcoming atmosphere. If the management addresses the maintenance concerns and enhances the facilities, it could regain its reputation as one of the best gyms in Newcastle.
Everlast Gyms - Newcastle, Byker: Opinions
Negative experience: The gym is now closed, they sent an email to let people know and now refuse to cancel membership! As they relocated to the other side of the city When I went few more people turned up so very poor communication.
Positive experience: Why has the byker gym closed.. Loved going there it was my local, staff extremely friendly and helpful. Everything i needed
Fantastic experience: Very good
Negative experience: Unfit equipment
Fantastic experience: Love this gym! My PT, David, can not be flawed. Designed a plan that I enjoy very much with enough exercise variety to keep me engaged.
Negative experience: Don’t join swimming pool is ice cold and they try people to sign up .
Negative experience: Started going back when it was a DW Sports gym and was pretty good but came back last year and its very poor, sometimes some weight machines are out of action. Pool is an embarrassment due to no heating for months,no jacuzzi and occasionally no sauna. 2 stars for location and staff. Zero for the owner.
Positive experience: Good gym, but questionable swimming pool. The jacuzzi is regularly closed and the sauna sometimes too, the swimming pool is good, but the water sometimes is too cold.
Negative experience: Been a member for years , reading reviews about the staff are so untrue, excellent bunch of staff who are all excellent at their jobs having to deal with all the complaints for the amount of broken equipment which isn’t their fault . A refurb has been promised for years and never materialised. Owned by a billionaire who should be embarrassed at how shabby and old and bordering on dangerous the equipment now is.
Fantastic experience: Pool is absolutely freezing changing rooms also not a very pleasant experience at all
Negative experience: Get the pool sorted out and turn up the heating and stop saying it's broken. It has been over 9 months now. Get it done.
Negative experience: Pool has been cold for over a year and both jacuzzis now removed. Pool is unusable in winter and no sign of repair. Was once best gym around - clean, nice pool etc and great classes. Now a bit of a joke. Everything shabby. Will be leaving after being a member since 2008.
Negative experience: They need to improve everything pool, gym equipments and .....
Fantastic experience: Love it
Negative experience: I have been a member at these facilities since 2013. I didn't want to give such a low star count but here it is... Aside from one lad who works there, I've lasted longer here than any member of staff and all the equipment... I still have my original DW fitness card. It has changed so many hands over the years and yet no upgrades were ever made. Members have just carried over from one brand to the next without any improvement, new staff have come and gone over the years. The newest staff are not at fault. They have very little to work with and try to make it better by having competitions and things to be active with... But no upgrades have been made. Machines are constantly breaking. Infact, Over the past few years things have declined considerably, I don't enjoy going anymore. The lockers were mostly broken but they actually recently changed the locks, but even those are falling to bits now. The two jacuzzi's are now wooden decks by a now cold swimming pool, which is fine if you like to Wim Hoff... But there are elderly women who have been members at this gym nearly as long as I who simply cannot deal with the cold. Holes have been in the ceiling for years, which I doubt will ever be fixed. The steam room was 'fixed and adapted' for like 5 minutes... but it's broken again. Fixed and then broken again... Every other week. The showers don't have enough hooks. Some shower heads are stuck on with tape... It's clean don't get me wrong. The staff have kept it clean. But the facilities are lacking. I've been here so long I decided to cancel my membership and move on to new pastures. Adiós
Negative experience: Been a member for 1+ year. Gym it’s ok. Jacuzzi and steam room often out of service. Staff is rude and never helpful, the app is not working and everytime I want to acces the gym I need to awkwardly stop at reception and spell out my details for them to let me in. The given reason every single time is “sorry may be one off problem with the app”. Poor Management and awful customer experience. It is Unfortunate as the gym itself has potential.
Positive experience: Great gym but need to improve coaches
Negative experience: Changed my review due to trying to cancel for financial reasons, my membership runs until November, provided proof my partner lost his job (absolutely disgusting they would even ask for proof this private) and still wasn't good enough because the letter wasn't in my name, told them we are now a 1 income household and I have a nearly 3 year old who's not in school yet and I'm not working full time (told them I could prove I only work part time and they wouldn't accept) so have to cut back on things! Was told no, and I could freeze my membership for £5 a month, £5 a month for someone to click a button. Told me I'd need to show proof of claiming universal credit, or proof I lost my job because my partners who lives at same address, wasn't good enough. Disgraceful, DO NOT JOIN HERE because if you ever end up in a similar financial situation they won't let you out of the contract early! Can't wait to leave! I don't have an issue with the staff that work here at all, but the jacuzzis have been scrapped over a year ago, steam room currently not working, and lots of broken equipment, the cable machine at the back is so rusty it's probably older than me. Again don't join, look elsewhere!
Negative experience: Pool is cold , holes in the celling, jacuzzi hasnt been working for years, steam room is falling apart and hardly works, sunbeds are aparently no longer in use according to staff also its over priced compared to other gyms.
Negative experience: Uninterested Reception just having conversation about relationships ... waiting too pay for something completely ignored then when I asked was told its card only ... what happened too politeness I wonder
Positive experience: Best gym around . Sometimes crowded. Nice swimming pool
Fantastic experience: Great gym, friendly staff and plenty of room to work out
Positive experience: Management providing promotional services sales targets to the employees and them trying to impose/compel and sell it to the customers make the situation unpleasant and awkward. Apart from that Cardio section is good, weight training machines can be upgraded. Good pool and steam area.
Positive experience: Could do with a weight replacement as the weights in the gym look worn-out, but other than that, the gym is great, never too busy, and really friendly staff
Positive experience: Sport ctr
Negative experience: Spa was removed so no more jacuzzi. Pool water is always cold. They removed the scale so now you have to pay 2.50 to be weighed
Negative experience: It's a shame to leave such a negative review as I have been a member of the year for over 7 years. I have seen a massive decline in the gym the pool is always cold never cleaned. Many members are complaining about the facilities. Just hope the owners see these reviews and do something about it.
Positive experience: Are you open on Easter Sunday
Fantastic experience: Great value for money. Friendly staff. Quality facilities. Focused classes.
Positive experience: It's an okay gym & pool. The gym equipment is very tired and some bits are broken or hastley repaired. The pool and steam room are very nice, however the pool can be a bit dirty at times. As well as becoming allot less enjoyable when there are more than 5 people swimming in the pool as it's quite small.
Fantastic experience: amazing gym. I absolutely love it. The staff are always warm and welcoming, it is a very positive atmosphere and I couldn’t recommend it enough!
Negative experience: Not my local Everlast but visited 2 weeks ago and the jacuzzi was out of order and again visited today. Jacuzzi still out of order, the pool was very cold and the place was empty. Maybe due to above reasons.....
Fantastic experience: DW gym have been amazing with me, all staff are so kind and have assisted where needed throughout. Lovely place, lovely staff, no complaints from me :)
Negative experience: Had the membership for over a year but it's not worth it anymore... They had 2 Jacuzzi's 1st one broke and instead of fixing it they just removed it and when the 2nd one broke they did the same... You just have the pool and steam room now. I don't understand why they didn't keep at least 1 jacuzzi functional... very annoying as I just wanted to go to the gym and have the ability to use the jacuzzi when I wanted to... Cancelled my membership and will go somewhere else.
Positive experience: Once u go theres no coming back
Negative experience: The gym is falling apart. I first joined in 2014 when the gym was in great condition. Equipment is now broken and held together with the actual weights??? (See the seated row machine) Weights and equipment is so worn you can’t see the actual weight of what you are using. Lockers all broken and actually lost my money inside the mechanism, spa broken with a sign that claims it will be soon removed. The whole place is filthy. Avoid joining at all costs.
Negative experience: Business hours said open but got there and the gym was shut. Combined with machines being broken for ages makes for a disappointing experience
Negative experience: Unprofessional behaviour with clients as I experienced today at 1:34pm.
Negative experience: I visited the Everlast Swimming pool at 13:35 pm today. I found the pool clean, but the behaviour of the reception was horrible - rude, racist, and unpleasant.
Negative experience: Such a waste of time and money. Very unprofessional and weird receptionist. It is a terrible place to go swimming. We entered this place at 1:35pm and left it right now.
Negative experience: Unprofessional, unfriendly and rude receptionist. I used the facility at 1:34 on 28/12/22.
Negative experience: I had a visit today. I found it clean but the staff were rude, unprofessional and unfriendly. They gave me the feeling that they didnt want me to enter. I live in Norwich and had never exprienced something like this anywhere else. I even felt staff being racist toward me.
Negative experience: I found it clean but the receptionist was so rude and implolite
Negative experience: I joined back in 2014, back in the DW days, where it probably wa one be best gyms in Newcastle. Then Everlast took over in 2020, and thats where the problems started. A lot of good group exeecise insteuctors left, and standard dropped massively. The last six months however, its went right down hill. Broken equipement, they have stopped supply cleaning material on gym floor, the responce from front desk staff is, buy a sweat towel. The last of the good goup exercise instructors are leaving, meaning there is no decent instructors, not only that there not a good selection of classes. It seems they wan't spend or invest money to make the gym a better place.
Negative experience: This gym is becoming a joke. First they take out the paper towels and expect customers To wipe down machines with their sweaty used towels ! How disgusting. Machines stink. Half the time broken. Not to mention rude staff and inappropriate behaviour from certain members of the gym. Used to be 5/5 now a 2/10.
Positive experience: This used to be premium gym best gym in Newcastle however now it has lost its spark gym equipment is looking poor and run down, the spa keeps closing down, lockers are in poor condition, coffee machine has never worked, weighing scales are gone. I’ve give 3 stars because the staff are very friendly and helpful if you give them some reinvestment they can easily turn it back to 5 star.
Negative experience: Member since 2014 but getting worth every year. Spa closed during some fulty. Equipment doesn't work properly, some staff are really unprofetioanal even when you say hello, they didn't answer to you.
Positive experience: Used to be a 5 star gym. However some of the equipment is looking a little dated now and the jacuzzi needs to be fixed.
Negative experience: Never explained that’s you’d have to pay an additional 4 months once you need to cancel, despite being on a rolling contract. No WiFi, broking air con and the equipment is old and broking
Fantastic experience: Duża siłownia dobrze wyposażona. Zajęcia z fitnesu rano i po południu, a do tego basen, z sauną parową. Polecam.
Fantastic experience: Love this is gym. Friendly staff, good facilities and great value for money :)
Fantastic experience: Pool is brilliant.
Fantastic experience: Great plave for work out, friendly staff
Positive experience: Condusive environment
Positive experience: It's fine, nothing special, it doesn't get quite as busy as some of the other gyms so that's a plus, but you pay for it with poor management - no staff on the gym floor 95% of the time, wasteful hygiene systems involving individually wrapped wipes, a severe lack of available carabiners available for use with the cable machines, a lot of the plates are kinda manky, just a small amount of investment would go a long way but apparently they aren't willing to make that effort after everyone is paying £30-40 every month... Changing rooms are nice, but they don't really save it - I'll probably be looking for somewhere that actually maintains its equipment once my contract is over
Positive experience: Good gym. Some equipment is out of date.
Fantastic experience: Nice gym
Positive experience: Most of the swimming classes sauna and jacuzzi always closed
Positive experience: Nice pool, clean gym. Some broken machines. Not crowded. No frills and relatively inexpensive.
Positive experience: Fab gym
Negative experience: The steamroom has been broken for the last 2 months at least, only one jacuzzi working. One of the showers is broken, a lot of the lockers are broken. It's A pretty big gym but only a small stretching spot. I tried to look online for personal training but they don't seam to have that facility at this gym. I think it was taking over by Everlast during the lockdown I'm hoping they're going to put some money into it... We'll see...
Fantastic experience: Great gym, loads of good stuff
Positive experience: Only used the pool and steam room as a guest but facilities were good and staff were friendly
Negative experience: Steam room broken, hot tub broken, lockers mostly broken, showers broken, changing rooms rarely clean, some of the equipment in gym broken, and if you complain to head office they just throw term's and conditions at you. Waste of money there's much better clubs around
Negative experience: Terrible. I would say about 50%-60% of equipment, lockers and facilities are either broken or not fully functional. Waste of money.
Fantastic experience: As z
Fantastic experience: So good
Negative experience: Very bad customer service
Negative experience: Before the pandemic the cleanliness was never great and unfortunately this has contined. They also book children into the swimming pool so it's not available all the time despite it being part of what you pay for. Whilst the staff on the floor are very nice, the office staff attitudes are appalling- very rude over email and they ignore complaints. Communication has been poor since the takeover including not telling members when they are restarting their direct debits. Would not recommend and definitely a covid and fungal infection risk!
Positive experience: No zumba or dance classes any more
Positive experience: Sadly no sauna or jacuzzi s working.ng at the minute but staff are very helpful.
Negative experience: A good gym overall, but they really need to fix the steam room as it's out of action, and the downstairs male showers are sporadic when they are cold or scorching hot. An update as of 13Jul21: both spa's are out of action, steam room out of action, out of the five downstairs showers 1 is totally out of action 1 is full on hot 1 is full cold and the other 2 are pot luck. Very few of the downstairs lockers have wristbands either if you plan to swim. Currently I'm paying for a fitness club and getting a gym.
Negative experience: Equipment is falling apart and they've tried to cover this up by putting covid signs over them. Steam room needs a new ceiling and has been closed for best part of a year, can't see this opening anytime soon. One of the jacuzzis has been closed for over a year, still waiting on 'parts' apparently. Only 3 of the showers work properly in the changing rooms. If you ask why they still charge full price they refer you to the 'terms and conditions' great experience....
Positive experience: Nice gym but crowed in weekdays. hope they will open Jacuzzi and stream soon.
Positive experience: It's good but Mike Ashley owns it!
Fantastic experience: Nice place but I hope they will open the steam room soon
Fantastic experience: Moved from David Lloyd. Much better kit here and way cheaper
Positive experience: Poor changing rooms
Negative experience: Been visiting since the gyms reopened. Staff hanging around the front desk, huddled together and wearing masks on their chins. I've never seen a member of staff upstairs cleaning, some gym members are cleaning the equipment after use, but not all. I think there should be staff there encouraging the cleaning but they appear to just be here for the crack. This place hardly encourages confidence when it comes to hygiene. Not all the facilities are open, still paying full price though. I overheard a staff member saying they'd had lots of cancellations, I can see why. Avoid.
Positive experience: It was previously DW sports fitness, now owned by Sports Direct under the Everlast brand. It okay, but they could have refurbished it before opening, nothing has really changed except the pricing has reduced to a more reasonable level. The interior everywhere needs a total new refresh and the equipment is just hammered as it was before.
Fantastic experience: First day back to the gym seemed decently clean not over crowded people appear to be sticking to social distancing if anyone is concerned regarding that factor so first impressions are good
Negative experience: Mike Ashley out
Negative experience: Never use the place zs i use Byker pool.
Fantastic experience: best place to train and staff are always spot on
Positive experience: Good selection of trainers and reasonably priced.
Fantastic experience: Health wellbeing keeps me healthy fit motivated
Fantastic experience: Top gym
Negative experience: Did not inform me x3 important parts of information on the membership freeze options. I work away 3 weeks on and three weeks home, I asked three members of staff including the manager if I can freeze in between months and anytime the answer was yes from them all. So I agreed to buy the annual membership at £465 on then terms. They then followed it must be annual as if monthly I need 5 days notice to freeze so I though it was a good deal to do. After 7 days training I went to freeze my membership I was then informed at the desk it won’t let him!! He then informed he would ring head office and get it sorted. I was at work and checked through head office if this had been completed. DW then informed I need to wait 30 days until I can freeze, £5 each time to freeze and can’t freeze unless it’s first of every month. Nothing I signed up for at front desk. One huge thing I’ve learnt is check terms and conditions before signing up to a contact, As your not shown terms before you pay. Absolute disgrace after this year or what ever small freeze I can get I would never be back here.
Fantastic experience: Great prices and great place to keep fit
Negative experience: The actual gym design is good but staff use aggressive sales techniques to try force pressure on you to pay there and then. Showers weren't the freshest smelling. Equipment was good range, better availability than cheaper gym and lots of room. Pool - a bit small. Good steam room. Overall, I was gonna go ahead and switch here but I don't like feeling pressured to pay before I've even had a look round. Very disappointing.
Fantastic experience: Second home
Negative experience: We are very dissatisfied with this gym. They are receiving more and more people than the capacity of the gyme. It is impossible to train there. We really can't enjoy our training. Service does not match membership price! the equipment is always in terrible condition and they don't even bother fixing it! They have two jacuzzis but one doesn't work all year and the other is broken at the moment too. We want to leave this gym.
Fantastic experience: Fab gym, fab facilities, great atmosphere!
Fantastic experience: One of the best gyms in Newcastle and reasonably priced! Spa/Pool area is great and the staff are very welcoming, definitely worth a visit.
Fantastic experience: The best gym I've been to and I've tried a few lol.. The staff are amazing always there to help and have made it feel like a home away from home. I can't recommend this place enough
Fantastic experience: Great club has everything you need and more. Love the clases and funcional training area.
Negative experience: Really aggressive sales pitch and pile pressure on you to join there and then. Don't state all the terms and conditions and generally not the nicest place. Very unpleasant female toilets. Wouldn't recommend to friends or family!
Fantastic experience: Great gym, great classes lots of free weights and good cardio machines, well worth a visit.
Fantastic experience: Cannot praise the staff here enough. Absolutely wonderful gym and pool facilities and knowledgeable expert staff who will help willingly and with professionalism.
Negative experience: Its too crowded as they still taking new people on as well as the service is so appealing very unhygienic club , waste of money.
