LivingWell: Opinions
Negative experience: I’ve been coming here for a long time, but unfortunately things have changed. The staff are now very unprofessional, and the facilities are constantly not working. One day the swimming pool is closed, another day the sauna isn’t working, and on other days the steam room is out of order. Every time I visit, something is unavailable, which is very frustrating. It’s disappointing to see such a decline in a place I used to enjoy.
Negative experience: I have been a member of this gym and spa facility for over a year and a half. For the most part, I have found it an enjoyable place to relax in the evening and meet interesting people, and the price is very reasonable, which makes it easy to ignore some of the routine problems -- filthy floors and rundown facilities that frequently break. Unfortunately, the last few months has seen a tremendous dip on standards and the attitudes of staff, which has resulted in a number of friendly faces leaving. If this persists, I feel I will have to end my membership as well. It now seems that the number of days that one or more of the facilities are out of order is more than the days they're all working. In particular, the top bench of the sauna has been bowing dangerously for over a month, with no effort to repair it despite the obvious health and safety risk flagged by members multiple times. Yesterday I discovered the bench had finally broken fully, making what could have been a simple fix more of an ordeal. The steam room recently had a hole in the wall and the repairs are obviously a bodge job that will not hold. In addition to the crumbling facilities, it is obvious there have been a number of cost cutting measures, especially around cleaning, that are impacting user experience. While members used to socialise politely, more most of the time is spent collectively complaining about the state of the place. The real final straw, however, has been the way that staff have, in the recent absence of any management, begun making the place feel actively hostile towards members. The main tension seems to be tha they have unilateral decided to begin closing fifteen minutes early so that they can clean and go home earlier. Although one of the selling points for me is that I've been able to come to the gym and spa after late days at work in London, I would understand this change if the result had been the facilities were any cleaner. Staff are only paid until 10:30, we have been told, and rather than paying them more to ensure they have time to clean, the decision has been made to just close earlier. However, I recently left a bag in my locker and went back at 10:15 to see if I could grab it. A young looking member of staff was leaving and told me that he had already locked up and couldn't let me in to get my belongings. That same member of staff has been incredibly duplicitous and rude in trying to force members out early. We watched him set all of the clocks in the spa ahead by five minutes, and I recently overheard him discussing with a colleague how they would turn off the jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna half an hour early so that customers would get cold and begin leaving. The result is that most of the goodwill between staff and members is now gone. Last night I witnessed him kicking a member out and doing a sort of victory dance afterwards. Regardless of the merits of the termination, this sort of display makes members feel incredibly unwelcome. I doubt I will maintain my membership much longer, and I imagine they will struggle to retain many other members in the coming weeks if this persists.
Negative experience: I personally find the gym and sauna and steam to be great. One MAJOR problem is parking , i had a membership and used to go most days a month when the parking was free. Now parking is £4 for gym users? So for me that’s already a minimum of an additional £80 a month on top of the ~£50 membership price This is ridiculous for an already “premium priced gym”. Other than that, the other facilities I would give a 5* but the parking means i basically can’t get a membership here so very disappointed.
Positive experience: Staff are friendly and nice. Steam room and sauna are good. I joined the first time mainly to use the swimming pool but sadly some hotel guests have little regard for hygiene. I saw someone jumping straight to the pool after sweating in the sauna and he's definitely not the only one. My eyes are still itching after two days. The gym was good though.
Fantastic experience: I’m writing to share my appreciation for two incredible staff members, Alana and Abi, at Livingwell. As a member, I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with them on several occasions, and I can’t express enough how outstanding their customer service has been. Both Alana and Abi have consistently gone above and beyond to ensure I have an exceptional experience at Livingwell. Their warmth, professionalism, and genuine willingness to assist have truly made a positive impact on my visits. It’s rare to encounter such dedicated and helpful staff, and I wanted to make sure their efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Words can't fully describe how happy I am with the service they’ve provided, and I just wanted to take a moment to commend them. Livingwell is lucky to have such amazing team members. Thank you for fostering such a wonderful environment, and I look forward to many more visits.
Fantastic experience: Very friendly health club in the basement of Brighton Metropole Hotel. Gym, swimming pool, sauna, steamroom and spa pool. Staff are helpful and friendly.
Negative experience: How can anyone justify rating this gym highly? There's no free trials for a reason. People are brainwashed to pay £15 a month (on offer btw atm) The pool is horrendously small and frustratingly busy, which can't be helped. Also stupidly shallow, so if you want to do the smallest length of any pool, the time you reach half way in the pool, if you're around 6ft , you'll bash your knees on the pools surface, which wasn't a pleasant experience I must say. The fitting rooms are atrocious. Absolutely terrible, there's bench opposite the lockers which can only cater to TWO people. When I arrived, I couldn't even wait because others have to take their time sorting themselves out understandably. So, I had to makeshift a changing area for myself within the small space, which wasn't ideal and was incredibly awkward. It's dirty, and needs revamp majorly. If not a whole new modern extension. Practically you endure every naked fellas crack in your face, *Gulp. it's beyond uncomfortable. I'm used to premium gyms, However due to the climate and cost of living, its made it impossible to obtain a membership which costs £100+ - obviously this isn't a premium gym and I know that, but I gave it a go, though I really didn't know it would be this bad. It's shocking. Trust me, you're better off going to Bognor Regis' Butlins for a better Pool experience.
Fantastic experience: amazing little spa that has the hottest sauna and hottest steam room, a nice big swimming pool as well as a little jacuzzi, and my favourite part is the ice cold plunge shower which is so important for cold therapy where I teach many people.. also they have a little gym which has up to date equipment and the staff are amazing and so helpful, the whole atmosphere is a blessing, I highly recommend to visit this gem and you won't regret it..
Fantastic experience: Best in town
Positive experience: Nice gym and steam room. The sauna is not hot enough. The swimming pool is a gem. Perfect size and not too busy.
Negative experience: Grubby showers and they need to fix them as one is hanging off the wall and one is leaking badly, changing room is small with about 3-5 lookers broken. Had two staff doing nothing but standing around! Maybe have one clean the locker rooms. If I could I'll give no stars!
Negative experience: The showers are almost always blocked up and the changing rooms are really grubby and mouldy. The pool area was refurbished recently but there's still lots of mouldy bits about
Positive experience: Bit pricey but I love it here
Negative experience: It's not clean the changing rooms are fifthly and the equipment is not clean
Positive experience: Not much equipment but good enough. It has a sauna and pool though so yeah.
Negative experience: Lockers don't work properly, bring your own padlock.
Fantastic experience: Facility-wise it has a nice swimming pool, sauna and an average gym room with all the basics for a full body workout. The 5 stars are for the staff, had a PT session with Manu, we did calisthenics and he was very professional and helpful, adapting exercises and making the session nice and fun, I will definitely take more sessions with him and I strongly recommend him if you like to be fitter and learn new skills.
Fantastic experience: Really enjoying it very friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff really knowledgeable and always ready to help. Great pool, sauna and steam room.
Positive experience: Great
Negative experience: Poor facilities, water quality is bad, filthy showers and locker rooms and the gym is very out of date. Clientele is just as ancient as the equipment. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Negative experience: Sadly I have to agree with the previous review and the reviews from years ago that all agree with the fact that this place needs some TLC. I have spoken to the staff about this and they say they will look into it but clearly they do not. It is shabby and doesn't feel hygienic at all. They could have used the 2 lockdowns to do this but that they didn't means that they think it is good enough for their customers. It is really in need of a regular deep clean (it wouldn't cost them much to do it once a week properly), the showers all need looking at, also in the main pool area and it needs some renovations and a treatment for mould. Also be careful, it is easy to get stuck in the ladies toilet, an adult can eventually get out but a child would be absolutely stuck in there.
Negative experience: Below average
Positive experience: One of the few places in Brighton which has a sauna and steam room as well as a pool. They also have a hot tub. The hot tub would be a LOT better if it was actually hot. The pool is ok. It is not a lengths pool and it is fairly shallow, but you can just about get a proper swim in. The sauna is small but decent and the steam room is decent but the lighting could be dimmer. However, the whole place could do with a DEEP CLEAN and redecorating. The changing rooms are dirty and outdated. There is a mould issue that needs addressing. The standards should be higher in my opinion considering this is part of The Hilton, and the price isn’t cheap.
Positive experience: Nice atmosphere but pool and sauna a little small.
Positive experience: Really helpful staff.
Fantastic experience: I am Mental
Negative experience: Called up to enquire about membership for gym and pool and was invited to trial the facilities. I called back to reschedule and was told that I would need a day pass at £10 - I questioned this as was not made aware of any charges previously and was told the manager would need to sign off a free pass and someone would contact me - I did not hear from anyone so I called on the day of my rescheduled trial and was again told that they would be charging me £10 to trial the facilities. I think it’s poor customer service to invite people in for a trial without mentioning any charges only for them to be charged when they arrive at the facilities so personally decided to take my business to somewhere more upfront, where I know what I’m signing up for.
Fantastic experience: Great little gym and pool. Covid spacing nicely
Positive experience: Not bad
Negative experience: I have been a paying member for 4 years and over the past year I’ve seen a real decline in standards of cleanliness and customer service. Staffing is woefully under resourced with often only one person on duty. I’ve completed the evaluation form on site many times but nobody ever gets in touch. Yesterday for example there were no towels, the soap dispensers in the showers were empty and the jacuzzi was out of order. The changing rooms and the pool area are all in desperate need of a deep clean, the place is filthy. The health club is very near to where I live and therefore very convenient, which is why so far I have remained loyal.
Positive experience: Great place for a short relax. Not the biggest place so I wouldn't want to pay a fortune but nice for a bob about, steam, sauna and some bubbles. Shame the spa had no treatments available for months!
Fantastic experience: متكامل الاجهزه
Positive experience: Although it's a maze and it takes time to learn your way around, the gym does offer pretty much everything, including discounted parking and a cafe and quite a few classes at reduced prices.
Fantastic experience: Great experience...
Positive experience: Staff were great when it came to our hen party on 4th may. Great customer service. Pool, sauna etc could do with an update though. Didn't use the gym.
Fantastic experience: Love this gym, not to busy in the gym, the staff are lovely and will help you with any questions and setting equipment up for you. The spa area is lovely, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and a small pool. Great for kids during the day and better for adults relaxing in the evening
Fantastic experience: Love the pool. Good facilities...
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel with swimming pool. I enjoy the yoga classes with Sacha.
Positive experience: Good gym and pool. Clean. Machines all work. Good staff. Family friendly with float noodles for kids. Only about 10-15 people at peak times. Usually less than 10.
Negative experience: Maintenance was always pretty terrible - something was always broken and took ages to fix. Most of staff were friendly but others were pretty grotty. Think they got fed up with all the complaints. At one point approx 18 of 20 lockers in the men's changing room were broken and a staff member had a go at me for using the family changing room
