Negative experience: I was considering this gym as the one I'm at is a little way out of town. Not a chance, the replies to negative reviews are insane. You should really consider how you come across to prospective customers. To top it off, you chase people with debt collectors over £40? To be clear, I haven't defaulted on a bill in my life, but why would that be your go to over such a small amount of money? Just ban them from returning like every other gym. Edit: Thank you for demonstrating exactly why I was put off. I'm so glad I read reviews before just signing up. Wow, just wow. Side note - if you think risking someone ending up with a CCJ is more "fair" or "appropriate" than simply refusing their return, you should probably reevaluate your morals. Not cancelling on time is £40. You would risk someone's financial stability over a few quid... I hope this review and their reply serves as a warning for anyone else thinking about using this gym.

For context, we don’t use debt collectors lightly or as a first step, regardless of the amount. It only happens after repeated failed payments and multiple attempts to resolve things directly. Most members never get anywhere near that stage.
As for banning people instead, that isn’t always appropriate or fair, especially when memberships are contractual and services have already been used. We try to deal with issues properly and consistently, not emotionally.
On responses to reviews, we’re a straight talking independent business, not a faceless chain. When something’s wrong, we’ll own it. When something’s unfair or inaccurate, we’ll say that too. That approach isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine.
We’ve built our reputation on how we look after our members day to day, not on keeping every passer by happy online. That's why we have been here for 34 years now.

Edit: To be absolutely clear, no one has ever received a CCJ as a result of being a member here. That simply has not happened.

Any unpaid balance goes through multiple failed payment attempts, reminders, and clear opportunities to resolve it directly. Escalation is a last resort and is rare.

We don’t make moral judgements about people, and we don’t enjoy chasing money. We do run a business with contractual memberships, and we apply the same fair, lawful process consistently.

Fantastic experience: After much nagging from my husband and constantly hearing about the great service he received, I agreed to try the Atrium....As I am also, like my husband, of a certain age and somewhat overweight I was very nervous...WOW what a welcome, amazing staff, friendly, really supportive, helping me understand the fitness levels and exercises for me to achieve my end goal. I really look forward to attending and working with the Atrium staff...new wardrobe on the way...Can't thank them enough .

Negative experience: This is horrible! I warned the staff in advance that I was going to have an operation at the hospital. And that I needed to cancel my account. They assured me that there were no problems and it would be very easy to do. Then I warned them several more times - I was going to have an operation. Can we do everything now? But they assured me that there was no need to rush and it could be done later. And when I finally came to close my account, they told me that they couldn't do it. And I would have to pay for another month for services that I wouldn't even be able to use because I would be in the hospital. When I asked to talk to the director, I wrote to him. He decided to scare me and threatened me with the police... I have never encountered such a terrible attitude in my life. I would never advise anyone to use the services of this institution.

We have a very simple policy, that is followed by hundreds of members. You stood, shouted, threatened and swore at Natasha on reception, really upsetting her.
It is not OK to verablly abuse people, that's why the police were mentioned. You bullied her.
You also have been totally untruthful here. You were told to fill out a form last month, and said I won't do it today. The payment for the membership was due in 2 days, not enough time to stop it. So you got angry and abusive and threw a tantrum.
Your membership is cancelled. We are a nice gym with nice people who do not abuse our staff. We are happy to not have you as a member.

Fantastic experience: I think the one star review is ridiculous !!! I have been a member here for a number of years and feel that all the staff are friendly warm and welcoming . I actually don’t think buying a padlock is a big deal Enjoy the club and stop moaning !!!

Fantastic experience: I used to weigh soo much due to having glandular problems caused by a brain tumor! Thanks to atrium i have the confidence to go for a good session in the gym followed by trying to do between 20-30 lengths at the pool! The gym sauna pool and staff are all 10/10

Positive experience: This gym has some positives—it’s conveniently located, and the laid-back atmosphere seems to suit many members. The pricing is high enough that it generally keeps the environment comfortable and maintains a pleasant clientele. That said, after the recent price increase, there has been a noticeable reduction in services, such as the removal of wipe-down towels, which felt like a step back in terms of convenience and hygiene. I understand operational costs, but it would be great to see an alternative solution for this, especially given the higher membership fees. The free weight section also seems to be suffering from incomplete sets, with no clear plan to restock, and the flooring near the smith machine area is worn and uneven, which can affect the quality of workouts. Addressing these issues would greatly improve the experience for members who take their fitness more seriously. I’m offering this feedback constructively, with the hope that these areas can be improved. I’d be happy to update this review if changes are made, as I believe the gym has the potential to offer a better experience for all members.

Hi Elisa, I dont recall seeing any messages from you regarding any of these issues. I also can't find you on our membership system.
I'm not sure what price increase you are referring to. The cloths were withdrawn around a year ago, as you know, because thousands had been taken. People massively abused the service. They were introduced for Covid. Like many things around the country they were temporary.
I'm also not sure what you mean by incomplete sets?
Nobody has ever mentioned the floor near the smith machine. I will take a look and see what the issue is.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely amazing, I was a bit worried after reading some of the reviews online but I can honestly say they need to be ignored entirely. I've had the pleasure of meeting with Jessica, Harvey and Niall, with each of them being incredibly welcoming and helpful. Niall took me through each of their machines and gave a demonstration on how they worked, as I had expressed that I'm not knowledgeable of the gym at all. He took everything in and got to know what I am looking for to help in building a plan for me which is a lifesaver. All in all, very informative and friendly, cannot fault them at all!

Negative experience: Absolute bullies! I followed a simple procedure and I gave 14 days notice in writing. They failed to acknowledge my request and referred me to a debt collection agency leaving me without hundreds of pounds. I see others have had this same issue. I wouldn't sign up to this gym. The owners are clearly struggling financially and abuse their power with customers!

Oh I see you guys have decided to rear your head again, months later. If you could just reply to an email then all of this would have been avoided. We only ask for 14 days notice but you couldn't do that. Then you ignored us and then call us bullies when you agreed to things and then can't stick to them. We aren't bullies at all, there are far more positive reviews from people than negative and the only negative ones are from people like you. We reported your partners review and got it removed.

Negative experience: I would strictly avoid becoming a member here. I had been a member for a number of years. Firstly, I cancelled my membership with them and they took two payments for two consecutive months even though I had cancelled my membership. Instead of returning the funds they persisted to take another month and referred myself to a debt collection agency. £311.05 out of pocket due to the unprofessionalism of this establishment and very poor management. Secondly, the gym, changing room and most facilities are very dirty and grubby. Thirdly, the sauna, steam room and swimming pool are out of order majority of the time. Feel free to check other reviews reiterating the same exact points I have made. If you are looking for a gym in Ely, I would suggest The Hive Leisure Centre.

This is the problem with reviews. You couldn't follow a simple procedure. You changed your story from saying you told someone and that you had left your telephone number to that you had put it in writing and then that you had filled out a form. The terms and conditions of membership are very clear and very simple. We just ask for 14 days notice in writing. The terms and conditions say you must ensure you have a response from us. You clearly didn't cancel and then when you tried to back date it, you were told that isn't possible. You were given plenty of opportunities. Trust me, debt collection is a last resort for us, and happens very very infrequently. Always to people that think they can bully their way through life.
Then, because you are bitter, you just lash out with nonsense. I am sure people will see this review for what it is, nothing but lies.

Negative experience: What a shame the only gym with a sauna in Ely is this dated?! Grubby old machines. You guys need a refurb asap! With a bit love, this could be a great gym. Please take into consideration the feedback you are getting.

You will have seem the notices up about the equipment. We have been let down badly by our supplier, as the machines are actually only 18 months old... There will be a total refit in March.
As a small independent business we do our best, and we invest everything back into our fitness club. Perhaps you didn't notice the signs on every machine? If you would like to have a pass when everything is done, then please do drop me an email at [email protected] and I will arrange it for you.

Negative experience: If you are looking for 1) rude reception staff more interested in speaking to their friends or on their mobiles, 2) rules not being enforced, 3) Facilities in need of serious maintenance work, 4) open area changing facilities with no cubicles other than showers, 5) dangerous waterlogged stairs leading to and from the pool area, 6) vaping and antisocial behaviour in the changing rooms, and 7) people facetiming in the pool area then this can all be yours for the recently increased cost of £40 a month. Stay well clear! *UPDATE* In response to the reply on here, my partner did let you know, and got told that a team meeting was held about it that day yet that same evening it was the same issues as always. Aa for not being the usual opinion, you have reviews dating back seven months about rude staff on reception. Clearly nothing changes.

It would be good if you could have raised these issues with us.

We have a very regular maintenance program, but some things are obviously at the vagries of suppliers. We have also been let down...

Negative experience: Misleading "No Contracts" and "No obligations" membership campaign despite the existing strict contract obligations with no a month to month enrol or ending membership whenever you wish to and without any notices and penalties. AND IF YOU TRY TO LEAVE WITHOUT A NOTICE due to sudden illness or job loss, THEY'LL SEND DEBT COLLECTORS AFTER YOU**. Jacqui at reception is at least friendliest person at Atrium and is lacking of professionalism and tact. However gym instructors and other staff are superb.

Hi Sam, as I can't find you on our system under this name, it makes it a little difficult to respond to you.
I can assure you that no one is forced into a membership, mainly as most people join online whilst at home. We don't have a pushy sales team, just gym instructors who will discuss your needs and suggest the best membership to suit you.
Yes our memberships come with terms and conditions, just like every other business that provides a service. There is no minimum term just 14 days written notice prior to the next payment is required to cancel, that's quite hard to beat as far as contracts go.

Fantastic experience: Great pool and jacuzzi with steam and sauna room, good gym space with plenty of cardio equipment. LOVE the classes, circuits on thurs and TREX on Mon and Fri are personal favs but really enjoy all the ones I've tried. Lovely staff, offer 1:1s if you aren't confident and great with advice on technique and motivation. Such a non-judge environment it feels very comfortable for workouts and trying new things. Friendly, fun and challenging!!! 100% recommend !

Negative experience: Disappointed. Got a 7 day free trial with a friend. On initial appointment we were not expected. Receptionist was rude and unhelpful. Completed personal medical info at reception. No privacy offered. Lucky Sam (gym) was free showed us around gym. She was very good. Found gym dirty apart from most touch points. Customers provided with cleaner. Changing rooms not clean, shower doors didn't lock. Unable to use lockers as required own ! Padlock. No towels provided. Had to use friends.Unable to access any classes as pre booked by regulars. Receptionist didnt offer to put us on reserve. I do feel the customer service experience was lacking and staff need retraining. Wasn't motivated at all went 3 days out of 7, as the reception was unfriendly. No follow-up with staff to see how we were getting on. Suffice to say I will not be back and do not recommend. had to use friends. Jacuzzi not good temperature and rail was wobbly getting in. Suffice to say not impressed will not be back.

Negative experience: Got a week free, came twice but won’t be back. Sam was lovely and gave a good tour of the gym which was reasonably clean and was knowledgeable about exercise to suggest with my knee injury. The changing rooms and the stairs to the pool were grubby, no locks worked on the 3 showers I tried. The pool was ok but the jacuzzi made my legs itch presumably with the chemicals in it. Other customers were friendly and answered questions that weren’t answered by staff when we came in. The receptionist rolled her eyes at a question and was totally rude, after 2 days I said to my friend that I might go Friday if I knew it was the normal jovial receptionists day off but otherwise I didn’t feel like dealing with her scowl

Negative experience: Walk in I expect a business would like to promote the company and make a effort The women at the desk was so unhelpful I have been in gyms for over 20 years I ask to use their services , no unless I join I would like to try your gym before committing to a whole month ! How about paying for a single session before joining ? No not allowed ! Look at the website her reply was lazy and rude !!!! I feel that it could be a good gym Just a shame the Member of staff was so un helpful I would recommend A staff training course to promote on how to treat potential customers

Fantastic experience: I've been a member for what seems like forever, and everything just keeps on getting better and better. From the welcoming and friendly staff, and how they've coped with the Pandemic, to the safe and clean equipment, there is little to find fault with (apart from the smart scales by the state, they lie! ). It sort of seems like it's a bit of a Ely institution, and most locals are either current members or have been in the past... or are even thinking of joining. I guess I shouldn't be too complimentary though, it night get even more popular, but I go at odd times so I shouldn't worry really.

Fantastic experience: I first came to the atrium 8 years ago with no confidence and hated my physical appearance, with the help from Jess who personal trained me I started to enjoy exercise again and felt so much better physically and mentally. Jess is super approachable and fun and she definitely knows how to motivate her clients! The whole team at the atrium are friendly and make you feel very welcome!

Negative experience: I joined the pool membership a few months ago with my partner, and on first few visits were very happy. There is a pool, a steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. Everything we were looking for. However, on nearly every visit thereafter we quickly found that 1 thing or another was out of order. The jacuzzi was closed on a few occasions, and there has been on going issues with the air conditioning since just after Christmas. This directly affects the ladies changing rooms, which are then closed! After having to queue for the easy access changing rooms soaking wet,in a public area! The steam room is regularly out of action also. Having spoke to the Manageress, it seems the steam room has been playing up for 5 years! Customer care is sadly lacking, and 'leave it you dont like it' is the attitude.

As I have put on facebook Karen. I tried to call you yesterday and left a message to talk through what happened. I do feel leaving these kind of reviews is not helpful. Most people recognise that things do go wrong. Clearly the steam room has been a bit unreliable lately, but we have had an engineer out weekly for the last 6 weeks. Where you have got this 5 years thing from I really don't know. I have plenty of people that heard you shouting and being rude to Jess. You have complained about the air conditioning and about us trying to fix it. I'm afraid you can't have both. The changing will be sorted today and we are having ongoing discussions with the manufacturer of the steam room. What more can be done? Perhaps you have some magic solution that you have kept to yourself so far? If you share it then we can solve the problem. As for criticising Jess, knowing her as I do and just how loved she is at the club, I think you are on your own there. Would you like a conversation?

Fantastic experience: Best Gym, sauna, steam room, swimming pool and superb classes you can find in Ely. Amazing team very knowleable always helping. Clean and tidy. Many classes suitable for all ages. Yoga classes truly outstanding 5 star for all instructors. Recent upgrade to jacuzzi and showers looks great. Recommended to anyone.

Fantastic experience: Rejoining today after a very prolonged spell of severe illness I was elated to see huge improvements all round. The swimming pool area has been sorted properly, the Jacuzzi too. The pool temperature has been increased slightly from its previous positive frosty 27°C, the pools chemical control responsibility has been undertaken by a professional company. These results show massively. The male changing rooms and shower facilities are being sorted by another highly professional team, these builders who are owning the problems surrounding the previously problematic system and putting it where it belongs, in the bin ! Vast sums are clearly being spent to improve the experience here. The quality of the Atrium Fitness Centre is now matching the excellent services it provides. Jessica Crowe, the new manager, is a major driving force of this change. Yes there are other gyms, yes some are newer but no other gym offers every thing this one does or anywhere near as well. This is proven by two consecutive years of top award winning.

Hello Guy, great to see you back and thank you for your feedback. It's lovely to hear we have gone above and beyond your expectations. As you say, a lot has happened since last April and we still have more to come. Unlike the larger gyms we have to finance the improvements ourselves, no grants or handouts for us, so it takes time to build up the pot. Especially when we face ever increasing costs to bring the building and systems etc. up to date. We have certainly had a few surprises on the way. For us the promotion of Jess has been the biggest and best change that could have happened and clearly shows with our great team, hence a third consecutive award win.
