1Rebel St John's Wood: Opinions
Negative experience: I’ve been to a few spin classes before but I don’t recommend this class for anyone who is new to spin or just getting into working out or actually anybody in general. I found the staff at reception were helpful but overloaded you with information where it had to be repeated several times even though I mentioned it was my first time at the gym and in class. This was overwhelming and not necessary. I was told to go to the class 5 minutes early so the instructor could explain the class to me prior to starting. I entered the class 5 minutes prior to the start and the instructor said ‘the door is closed the class hasn’t started yet.’ I apologised and explained I was new didn’t realise (obviously it’s my first time here) I was told to attend 5 minutes earlier so she could help with setting me up on the bike, her response was ‘yes I’ll be one minute and then I’ll open the door to start the class’. I left the room and 30 seconds later she opened the door and said to the space outside the door you can enter now. As someone who exercises regularly and attends a lot of different gyms I found her to be rude and abrupt. She wasn’t very welcoming and did not take into consideration this could have been off putting especially to someone who hasn’t attended a spin class before. When I entered the class she saw I was struggling to find my bike number didn’t offer to help and remained on her bike giving instructions on how to set it up. The class was not full, there was no more than 8 people in attendance. It was only when she asked at the end of giving instructions if anyone needed help she came over to me to help after I raised my hand. This was a really poor introduction to Rebel and I wouldn’t go back for another class either. I had taken another spin class the day before and the instructor could not have been more helpful to my friend and this instructor was a stark contrast. It’s a shame because the facilities are nice but the bad attitude and inconsiderate nature of the instructor made it a terrible experience. Avoid at all costs for your own benefit.

Negative experience: I arrived on time for the class but behind one of their customer, after her, the time is one minute late for the class. then the store manager told me I wasn’t allowed to get in. Other than repeating the policy which is completely followed , he didn’t offer any solution . What the heck? I have never seen such a lousy and arrogant service provider . Never gonna come again

Negative experience: Avoid! Absolutely terrible experience from start to finish. A few key points: 1. Rude, dismissive customer service. The front-desk team consistently act like you’re inconveniencing them by asking basic questions. They refuse to help, won’t explain membership options, and repeatedly tell you to 'check the website' instead of doing their job. Completely unprofessional. 2. Music so loud it’s physically uncomfortable. I’ve tried several Reformer classes with different instructors, same problem every time. The music is blasted at nightclub levels, to the point you can’t hear instructions even through their microphones. It’s actually painful and makes it impossible to focus on the workout. 3. Lockers are a joke. Most are unavailable, and the ones that are free can’t be locked because the dial is stuck in the wrong position. You waste time just trying to find a working locker, and nobody on staff seems to care or check the equipment.

Negative experience: Rude guy on reception ruins the mood. When I came in to check in he was on his own making 2 smoothies, my class was about to start in couple of minutes so I NICELY brought his attention to myself “sorry, can I check in, my class will start shortly” on what he replied “well, that’s your problem”. Obviously he was very understaffed at that moment, as when my class finished there were 3 more people behind the check in desk, and he was gone. But really not the way to speak to customers, or people in general. Grown man but behaving like a teenage mean girl

Negative experience: Booked a class here for the first time via classpass. I arrived exactly on time, changed and ready, and was told my spot had been given away. I explained the class started at 2:45pm and I was exactly on time and they said sorry but they had already given my spot away. They also confirmed they had taken the classpass credits, marked me as a no-show and I would be charged the no show fee, but that I could email classpass to try and sort it out. Staff were simply doing their job but it definitely was a waste of my time on a Sunday afternoon and left me with a negative impression of the studio. If policy is that patrons will be refused entry even when showing up on time (i.e. they actually have to show up early) then that should be made clear, otherwise it feels like unethical business practises. Would recommend going elsewhere for a more positive experience.

Positive experience: I’m used to the Megaformer machine so I just hoped the reformer here would give the same effect. But after trial classes, I found out that my core doesn’t really get a good workout, movements are rushed, body doesn’t get a full effect. The stretching after the class is the shortest and most rushed I have seen, almost 10 seconds each muscle. And the coaches are not attentive at all. They rarely correct posture. In my last class we were two women trying to follow the movement with the equipment hitting the mirror because we were in the far end of the room. Coach did not come by to explain an alternative way etc, she just avoided us. I think one can have a better workout without fancy flashing lights or loud music. Hip, clean and trendy place otherwise. And lavender chill towel is amazing after a workout.

Positive experience: It's OK since not may options in this location of London but has a lot of improvement areas. Team is so young and knows nothing about customer service, so they probably need a manager there to support or solid training. There is a mean girl kind off vibe among the staff. They ask for feedback after class, but get defensive / take it personally and can't really take it onboard. And the classes are a little too weak and don't work the full body evenly. Much more leg focus than typical pilates which is also a lot of obliques/back/core which for many is what makes pilates unique in how it shapes form.

Fantastic experience: The place that keeps me sane, day after day. I can’t thank the 1Rebel team enough for the support they’ve given me, mentally and physically, over these past few years. Negative experience: Went to my second 1rebel class in St John’s Wood with my mum. It was her first time and therefore was new to the reformer equipment. We arrived 15 mins early and went into the room 5 mins to spare. We were rudely greeted by the instructor Libby, it was as if she was doing us a favour and didn’t want to be there. She refused to help my mother as apparently we were “ late” which we weren’t as we were politely stood waiting to be given instruction. She told us we had to leave the class to which we said absolutely not as we had been waiting all day for the class! Then when the class began my mother and I were so confused on the reformer having barely used it and was terrified of injuring ourselves… I tried my best to help her use the reformer from my prior knowledge as Libby the instructor definitely wasn’t going to. Then Libby approached me and told me to be quiet which I was shocked by as if she gave the support I wouldn’t have had to help my own mother. We definitely will not be using this instructor again, my mum has come out with an aching pain in her back as there was no correction on her form. We were so excited to have a mother daughter lesson to which she completely ruined it. My mother is a big advocate for the St John’s Wood area and will not be recommending this place to any of her big following. What a shame.

Fantastic experience: I was introduced to 1Rebel during one of my most anxious periods at work. I used to go to Holborn since it was close to work. Then one day, by mistake, I booked SJW — the best mistake I’ve ever made. That day, I met Ella — the one person who always made me feel at home. A friend who would warm my heart with a huge smile and always be one step ahead when there were things I might have overlooked (like canceling a class — oops!). If you’re lucky enough to have met her, kudos to you. If not, book yourself an evening session — she’ll be right there, greeting you with her beautiful smile before your session. Fantastic experience: I went today for a healthy shake at 1Rebel St Johns Wood, I have to say the service was exceptional. I'm usually an avid fan of Joe and The Juice, however unfortunately for them the rather handsome Sam and stunning Jodie's easy charm and winning smiles are making (J&J) look a little shabby. I would highly recommend for a tasty treat and some eye candy.
Negative experience: The instructors are great, and the gym is wonderful but the customer service from HQ and email is terrible. Was treated so badly after their systems were down and felt v disrespected especially as I'd been going there for a year.
Fantastic experience: Great little studio with everything you need. Spin classes throughout the day, Pilates etc. My personal favorite instructor is Sam for spin. He’s got great playlists and is super engaging. The locker rooms are clean and classy. People have good energy. Juice bar up top. St John’s Wood is a great little nook of London to walk around after your workout.
Fantastic experience: It is always nice and clean. Great vibes in the gym and all the staff, instructors are amazing. Protein shakes and many options are available for pre workout drinks!
Negative experience: Disappointing customer service. I arrived to the class on time, but missed the first time induction (didn't know about it). The reception refused to refund the fee.Read the small print really carefully, otherwise you will be wasting time and money here.

Fantastic experience: Wonderful spot! Really enjoyed the fun setting - music light great machine ac and spotless venue. I get bored w the gym so this was a fun and focused change. Remember to arrive early - ideally at least 10 min early - and have Pilates grip socks. This has gotten me to enjoy this practice!
Negative experience: UPDATE: The head office has reversed their illegal position and will now allow me to bring my assistance dog. I didn't appreciate, however, Michelle lying in her email and pretending she never banned my dog from the classes. Her ignorance of Equality Act 2010 laws was reflected also in her calling my dog a "service dog" instead of an "assistance dog", because service dogs are a completely different type of working dog in the UK and assistance dog is the legal term. The upper management of the business is very unprofessionally run. However, the team at the local SJW branch is so great that I will keep coming back provided that this doesn't happen again. Not a great start to a gym membership, though! 1Rebel has illegally discriminated me by trying to prevent me from attending classes with my assistance dog. It's a shame to give them 1 star, because the staff at this branch were wonderfully accommodating, but it was 1Rebel's head office who are untrained in the Equality Act 2010. I brought my perfectly behaved and clearly labeled assistance dog to a class on Wednesday, where he slept in a carrier the whole time and bothered no one. I signed up for more classes and got a phone call this morning saying that I couldn't return due to "hygiene" reasons that, under British law, only apply to hospitals and restaurant kitchens. They were not willing to work with me. I would not recommend this discriminatory and ableist institution to anyone.
Negative experience: It used to be my favourite 1Rebel center but I don't think I'm coming there again. They seem to have hired new staff who seems to not have gone through basic customer training. "It's just a class" they said when they refused to let me in when I arrived 30 seconds late to the class. It hasn't been "just a class" to me. It has been the highlight of my week. I hired a babysitter so that I can do this one thing in between work meetings and caring for a newborn. I ran through all the red lights to be there on my way there. I cleared my work calendar so that I can be there. But no more. Clearly it's "just a class" so I might as well find a new one (or at least avoid the St Johns wood center).

Fantastic experience: Very nice colleagues
Negative experience: Worst coffees ever!!!
Negative experience: Today was my first time trying a class at 1rebel, I bought three intro sessions with the sights of continuing but I definitely won’t be back because I had a horrible experience beginning to end. I arrived at 8.25 for an 8.30 reshape class and checked in. Immediately the person at the desk wasn’t very welcoming and seemed impatient when she was describing details about the class I was unfamiliar with. Just as I was about to head downstairs I realised my parking app wasn’t working. I quickly ran outside and sorted it. When I came back two minutes later, a member of staff very rudely shouted over the desk “you should’ve been in the class 30 seconds ago” Her approach was unnecessary, but in the interests of time I put it aside and headed downstairs. Once inside it was all a little disorientating, but I tried to join in and very quickly pulled a muscle in my upper back. I stopped the movements and tried stretching but I was in pain, the instructor was on the mic going at a fast pace, it didn’t seem like there was an opening to interrupt and ask for help, so around 3/4 mins later I left. Upstairs at the front desk. I explained I’d hurt myself and needed to leave, I enquired if it’d be possible to use my credit on another day. I didn’t receive an ounce of compassion from either of the staff. Not once did anyone ask if I was okay. The first person looked at me with irritation before turning to the other who flippantly said “did you tell the instructor what happened? this is why you need to come 5 minutes early, to speak about injuries”. Further along in the conversation she also implied that because this wasn’t a new* injury, and id just exacerbated an old one it was unimportant. I explained that regardless, I was in pain and this isn’t how you treat people. In the end I came back and requested to be refunded for the entire block - waiting for confirmation on that. The entire environment felt elitist and uninviting. And I don’t want to work out anywhere where I’m talked down to and there’s zero duty of care to clients.
Fantastic experience: We loved working out here
Positive experience: I have just completed my 3 class trial. The studio is very modern with great showers/changing room facilities. They offer water, towels (including cold ones) free of charge. The staff seemed nice and friendly. I deliberately booked with 3 different instructors, all of whom had very different styles. The induction was a little confusing. I felt that 2 of the 3 classes were too rushed, which made them ineffective for me, because by the time you master the technique, the instructor has moved on to another one. I also felt that the loud music often consumed the instructor's voice making it harder to hear her. My last class didn't give me any muscle pain as if I did nothing :(
Fantastic experience: I’m a regular. Friendly staff and teachers. Good classes for sure! Lockers should be checked more often as sometimes they cannot be locked.
Negative experience: New customer to 1Rebel but I liked the spin classes so intended to buy a 10 pack for £179, make sure you read the details more carefully than I did! What I bought was a 10 pack of 179 per month repeating every month for 3 months. Complex product. No way I’ll be able to use those classes and no mercy on the refund / compromise front.
Positive experience: I've been to several 1rebel studios and I've been a customer for 2 years now. I really like st Johns wood changing rooms, staff is friendly and helpful classes and trainers up to the 1rebel usual standard. What really needs to change is how close to each other treadmills are. They are so close to each other that I was accidentally touching hands with the guy next to me when we were both touching the side rails of our treadmills. I understand you try to squeeze people in but come on. Even st Mary's axe which is in the city has more space allocated per treadmill. I found spaces between boxes quite narrow as well.
Negative experience: Horrible customer service. Went inside to ask about their classes and basically the girl at the desk wasn’t bothered to answer any questions.

Fantastic experience: Really enjoyed my class here! Reshape was really challenging (in a good way) and the instructor was brilliant, also taking time to give me an induction before the class. I would definitely return and recommend - it seems they’re strict about late arrivals based on other reviews but I think that’s fair enough.

Fantastic experience: I prefer coming to this studio as it’s easier with parking. The reshape room isn’t the biggest but gets the job done. I’ve tried reformer here but it’s not my favourite reformer classes. Zac and Sherri are great reshape instructors, very encouraging and have a great energy.

Positive experience: The class was amazing, instructor was fun and effective, the facilities were amazing, but I picked a shoe that ended up not being the right fit for one of my feet and started to hurt very badly, so I went out to get it changed, and when I went upstairs to look for help 3 staff members looked at me as if I had 5 heads and each one of the heads had just said a slur. Like, my foot hurt, I needed a replacement shoe, not a wild concept for a spin studio. They said there was only 5 minutes left in class and not to go back. I understand not trying to disrupt but there was 10 minutes left and their attitude was not my favourite. I'd still go back but perhaps to a different location.

Negative experience: Bad experience today. First time at reformer at one rebel. I was not aware in advance but needed to bring grip socks, so was forced to buy them. Then I arrived at the class, the instructor was giving an induction to someone else. I told her that I’m pregnant and also needed an induction. She said she can’t as she’s late. I was there 10 minutes before of the start though. I said that it’s ok, I can just follow whatever movements people are doing, she looked very upset and showed me 2/3 things briefly. Then she said “I called 5 minutes ago to see who needs induction” making a face at me. Although I was there I didn’t hear. After 10 minutes of class where I was not shown appropriate movements for pregnancy, I had to leave the class. Honestly don’t recommend.

Negative experience: Rude and unfriendly felt of house team. Class was ok but the worse of their branches for sure. Having read other reviews below - a common theme re the reception staff and general experience.

Fantastic experience: I attended my first ever reformer Pilates class at this studio and I couldn’t have asked for a better first time! Right before the class an induction took place, so I got familiar with how to use my equipment. During class the instructor was very helpful correcting my moves so I felt safe. I am quite sporty, but still found this class challenging and very fun. Absolute must-try if you enjoy regular Pilates

Negative experience: I had a terrible first time experience, so much so that I never went back. I went to 1Rebel for the first time for a reformer class, I went in time (with plenty of time for induction). The instructor of the class saw that I am clearly lost. I even asked for help to find my bed. She didn’t offer any help or an induction (instead continued chit-chatting with other students). A few minutes into the class after I asked her a question about the reformer bed set up, she told me I had to leave the class because I hadn’t had an induction. The front desk staff did not seem too interested in what I experienced, offered little empathy for someone who has tried to join a class only to be kicked out (they were more intested in making sure I buy a pair of socks before my class!!) I tried emailing 1rebel to share my experience, but they never replied to me. I preferred to lose the 50£ I had paid for the welcome package than to ever go back to a gym that doesn't even have the courtesy of returning a feedback email, and shows so little care about their customers. Since, I have started going to Heartcore for pilates and I have found it delightful.

Fantastic experience: There are many nice gyms in London, great instructors, classes… but what also very important is what people you meet first entering the gym! They make the full impression and make you want to come back! Ella from 1Rebel St John’s Wood Reception Team is extremely helpful, very patient, know your face and always smile which creates your mood for a day! Just really want to thank her for all her care and work!!!

Fantastic experience: Did the reformer Pilates class which was lovely. Very clean gym but bring grippy socks otherwise you will have to pay £15 there for the socks (which I found very expensive).

Fantastic experience: Best pilates reformer in town! very good teachers as well <3
Negative experience: Brought my husband's water bottle that he forgot at home, to give it to him and was not allowed in. Apparently they give you water bottles if you ask for one - something I've never heard of as a regular rebel1 customer and I'm sure he hasn't either. Not sure how "healthy" and "safe" is it to do a 45 mins intense class without water.

We do have a no late entry policy at 1Rebel, due to health and safety, therefore once the doors close, access is no longer permitted. Our no late entry policy is sent out to all customers when booking sessions.
We also have reusable water bottles in our efforts to fight single use plastic, and you can ask for one at Reception from one of the Front of House team, all you have to do is return it at the end.

Fantastic experience: I did a ride class as my first time here and really enjoyed it, we started slowly and pushed really hard at the end. Henry was an excellent instructor. I really liked having the metrics on the bikes which I haven't seen at other spin classes, it creates a more controlled workout as opposed to twisting the resistance and hoping it's ok. Loved how we synced the RPM to the beat. The front desk was kind and welcoming and the whole space was really nice. A small critique is that they clearly use a highly perfumed soap for the towels which I found a little overpowering and I wish they had some mats outside the shower cubicles because that area gets very wet and you can't put anything on the floor. Overall a really good experience and I hope to find myself there again soon.

Negative experience: I got there at 10.45 for a 10.45 class & they wouldnt let me in. What type of service is this? I’ve done reformer pilates before!! Wont be coming back.

When signing up to 1Rebel, and attending your 1st session, it does state on the confirmation email that you need to be there early for your induction, which happens 5 minutes before the class begins, and if not, then entrance will not be permitted. Fantastic experience: I go here pretty regularly and I have prepared 6 handy tips to help the people with the one star reviews: 1. You know how they say you need to be on time or you won’t get let in? Like over and over again on the loudspeaker? Be on time. That way you will be let in. 2. Try not being late. Instead be on time. 3. Find out when the class starts. Then be in the class at that time. You can also be in class before that time. But you can’t be after that time. 4. If they said you need to be in the class early since you’re new and need to learn things, be in the class early, since you’re new and need to learn things. 5. Don’t try and barge in late and interrupt the class because you don’t know what you’re doing. Instead, be on time. 6. Being on time is the best way to ensure you’re not let in because you weren’t there on time. Thank you for listening to my TED talk.

Fantastic experience: Great instructors, fun and challenging classes. Nice amenities, clean showers/changing rooms, friendly staff. Yes, you do have to make sure you arrive 10-15 mins early but this really helps preserve the ambiance of the class itself, as you don't have people interrupting/rushing in once the class has started. Lots of the negative reviews on this page are about this, but personally I think it's a good rule and the classes are better for it.

Negative experience: Very disappointed with this place! Reshape+abs class we attended yesterday, Me and my daughter, at 7:30 was terrible!!!The instructor very rigid, not explaining the exercises, loud music, we could barely understand what she was saying. Absolutely terrible!! Considering the membership is £170, you would expect better service! Not going back there!! Extremely disappointing!!

Negative experience: My partner had a very bad experience last week after being turned down for arriving 1 minute late! This was never an issue with CoreCollective (3 minutes flexibility to still be able to enter the class). We live in London and there are traffic/bus/tube strikes that may cause delays unfortunately and not being given any flexibility whatsover ontop of being charged for a 'late cancellation' AND a 'no show' is quite a frustrating and appauling experience to say the least. The staff and management quality since shifting from CoreCollective to 1rebel is very noticeable and NOT for the better!
Negative experience: It was my second time today at 1Rebel. I arrived with two friends. I booked the Reshape class at 12.30 and they booked reformer Pilates at 12.45 We arrived at 12.31 as I made a mistake and thought my class would start at 12.45 too. I then asked the Blonde lady at reception if I can switch to reformer class if there are any cancellations or no shows. She told me it was fully booked and I wasn’t allowed in. After my friends did the class and I had to go home they told me that 3 spaces were empty. Not gonna come back. Really unfriendly and bad customer service

Negative experience: AVOID AVOID AVOID I arrived 3 minutes early for my class and the man at the reception wouldn't let me in because it was my first time and supposedly I should have arrived 5 minutes earlier because it was my first time. Whilst I was talking to him another woman arrived who had used this gym before - she arrived literally 1 minute before the start of the session and he didn't let her in either because the door of the studio had just closed and once the door is closed you cannot go in. The man said it was written in their terms and conditions but I think if you have such policies and refuse people entry even when they are on time you need to put this in big letters at a very visible place on your website! I go to the gym to destress not to feel like I have to catch a train. It should be up to me if I want to attend the whole session or the last five minutes of it. Treating customers like this is extremely off-putting as a result I don't ever want to go back which is a shame because maybe I would have liked their classes. Suggestion: this gym has to make it very clear at the onset they have such unorthodox policies.
Fantastic experience: Best instructors around, the classes are great and the studio is gorgeous. Only downside is sometimes the functional workouts are a bit packed. (Edit: Written when this was still core collective)

Fantastic experience: This review is specifically about the Lift classes - they are absolutely fantastic! Diverse, energetic and get you in shape quick. The trainers are superb - very attentive and knowledgeable. The studio itself is nice - new, clean and nicely decorated.
Positive experience: I typically find the classes great and the locations are pretty, but I have 3 main issues with this gym: 1. First, I dislike that despite having a unlimited membership I am still penalised when I cancel late. I know most gyms have this policy but as an unlimited member, I think a benefit would be no penalty for late cancellation. And if you cant have this then at least notify the member signing up about this!!! I had 0 idea until I checked my bank account. 2) the St Johns Wood location studios downstairs are FREEZING. I had to wear two sweaters and my outdoor leggings to class today. 3) The washroom on main floor for the st johns wood location does NOT lock properly. This is majorly annoying. PLEASE FIX THIS.

Fantastic experience: I use this gym regularly via class pass - intense and efficient row/trx sessions and very good showers, toiletries, changing rooms.
Positive experience: Not as promising as it looks at first. The sessions average, the loud club music doesn't help for the yoga chill time. However, nice and well maintained premises and facilities, good staff, good location.
