Our comment from FitFit UK about Medway Park Sports Centre:

Medway Park Sports Centre is a well-equipped facility situated in Gillingham, United Kingdom, offering a wide range of activities for all ages and abilities. Users appreciate the spacious and modern gym, which is nicely air-conditioned and features a variety of high-quality machines. The centre boasts a large swimming pool, as well as indoor and outdoor playing courts for sports like badminton and squash. Visitors commend the friendly staff, who are always willing to assist and ensure a positive experience.

However, some users have raised concerns about the cleanliness of the changing rooms and pools, indicating they could benefit from a more thorough cleaning regimen. Some facilities, such as the showers, are described as communal and lacking privacy, which could deter some guests. Opening hours, especially on weekends, have also been criticized as being too restrictive.

Despite these points, Medway Park remains highly regarded as a leisure destination, with many recommending it for its affordable membership options that provide access to multiple centres. Visitors also appreciate the ample free parking available for users. Overall, Medway Park Sports Centre is a fantastic place to engage in physical activities, with a variety of offerings suitable for everyone.

Positive experience: I go swimming here and there's tons of little issues, shared changing areas for males and females? Whoevers idea that was needs sacking.. Granted there's cubicles but you still have to get to them after your shower. Showers there's most pressure from a down pour then these showers.. The cleaners must be on strike or something because you never see them and you different don't see their work.. The tiles in the changing areas, are as clean as the Ganges during festival time.. However the staff are brilliant and helpful, some of the younger ones need prompting now and again but still good and they definitely care. There's also a huge amount of Drain flys around the showers, they seem harmless just annoying... They definitely need funding at this place and it would be a brilliant place. Don't let that discourage you from going it's still a good place to come!

Fantastic experience: People complain about the price. I'm happy at the price for membership as it gives you access to 4 leisure centres in the area. One being brand new. The gym isn't full of gym bros with groups hogging machines like you get in JD Gyms for example, They're casual people of all ages and physique, it's never busy, plenty of machines, and they're all higher quality than cheap gyms in the area. The gym areas are air conditioned. 12 badminton courts, 3 squash, pickle ball, table tennis etc. You don't need to be a professional and you don't need equipment, they will lend you equipment at reception. Swimming pool is a decent size, members lane swimming is good, again don't need to be a pro. I honestly don't understand why people complain. I will say that I find it strange that there's not private showers, they're open so you're showering in close proximity to strangers. I find that very discomforting so I don't use them.

Fantastic experience: Nice sports centre. Really big and has lots activities available for all ages. Visited the centre with my husband. The young Lithuanian lady was really nice. She showed us around and was very informative, friendly and professional. She answered all our questions and we were very pleased with everything.

Negative experience: Medway Park should consider billing customers according to the services they actually use. My membership is £39 a month, and I only use the gym. While £39 might be reasonable value for those who use other facilities such as the other gyms, pool or classes, it feels overpriced for gym-only users. Many gym-only memberships elsewhere are available for around £25 per month, making Medway Park’s offering poor value in comparison. Cleanliness: The gym is kept reasonably clean, and I have to commend the cleaning staff — they’re friendly and do a great job maintaining the space day-to-day. However, the facility clearly needs a deeper clean at least once a week, which doesn’t seem to happen. Health & Safety Concerns: This is where the biggest issue lies. There are frequently under-18s using the main gym, often lifting weights far too heavy for them, with little to no staff supervision. I’ve even seen a child vaping in the gym and staff didn’t intervene. I regularly report safety concerns like this (about once a month), but nothing seems to change. If the gym allows children to use the facilities, there should always be staff monitoring the floor to ensure safety and proper use of equipment. Additionally, some of the instructors give questionable advice during inductions, suggesting there’s a real need for further staff training. Opening Hours and Closures: For £39 a month, the opening times are quite restrictive.. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and bank holidays is unreasonable for a modern gym.. You need to open at 6am on a weekend.. On top of that, the gym frequently closes for extended periods, such as over Christmas, or for random days, without any fee adjustments. Members like me end up paying full price while being unable to use the facilities. Staff often suggest using another Medway Park location, but the alternatives are not located locally.. So I end up having to pay for a different gym which annoys me more. I will say the gym itself is well equipped, it does need a shift around to be more practical because the layout is limiting, kettle bells would be a nice addition, having free mats upstairs near the weights would be useful. However, It’s a poorly managed gym that could easily be great with better oversight.

Positive experience: The staff are friendly but the swimming pool changing room is in need of more friendliness and disabled friendly nest

Positive experience: Went for the tobogganing. We went before and payed for the tubing and tobogganing. We found the tubing quite boring. You do not really get much speed on the tubes. The tobogganing however, is great fun. Please use your own caution, but we do not use the brake until having to slow down at the very end. Paid for five goes each X 2 which was £38 so not cheap, but as a once a every now and then treat, not bad. Fully recommended.

Fantastic experience: So I'm giving this 5 stars mostly because I'm emotionally attached. The pool itself is incredible. It is enormous. It is clean and well organised and works really well for lane swimming. All the staff are really friendly and kind and helpful. The gym is really good, it's modern with good equipment and is really clean and tidy. There is also a special premier gym changing room which is really really nice. However. I have been trying out all the Medway Sport sports centres and the premier changing room at Cozenten Park you can use for the pool which is amazing (I desperately wish there was a premier changing area for the pool at Medway Park). The changing rooms at Medway Park are minging. In fairness they are not quite as disgusting as the Strood Sports Centre ones where I was genuinely worried I was going to cut myself on something and end up with tetanus or something awful. But the changing rooms are completely freezing (they feel as if they are half outside?) and there are actual spiders just living there. The shower is just a room with loads of showers in so you obviously have to use them in your swimming costume so you can't get properly clean. I wish they had shower cubicles.

Positive experience: A value for money venue. Membership allows use of 5 centres, all with pools. Some have more facilities than others, and 1 is only open during the summer ( The Strand). If you are active or want to get/keep fit, then Membership is highly recommended.

Fantastic experience: Tornadoes loved the Medway Mile Event.

Prava Rai 8 months ago

Negative experience: Absolutely disgusted. My son was excited for swimming every week until yesterday when some new instructor treated him terribly just because his regular coach is on leave. Instead of encouraging him, this guy straight-up excluded my son from the session and claimed “he’s not listening.” That’s how you handle kids? By shutting them out and embarrassing them in front of others? Sounds like he just wanted to power-trip. I spoke to the manager and she clearly didn’t care either—just took his side. What a joke. Totally unprofessional and unacceptable.

Fantastic experience: Great gym with a full range of equipment. A council run centre with a pool, fitness classes & gull size athletics track

dave hook 10 months ago

Negative experience: I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding the shocking and unsafe service my son experienced at your facility 21st May 2025 from 18:20 to 19:23 My son, who is autistic, was practicing his swimming for an important assessment with Medway Council. However, the lifeguard instructed him to leave the lane swim and join the main section with other children. This disrupted his practice, preventing him from completing full lengths. More concerning, the pool environment lacked adequate supervision. Children were running on the slippery surface while lifeguards stood around talking, failing to enforce safety rules. Despite visible signs prohibiting diving, no action was taken, and as a result, one child hit my son while swimming. I find this lack of duty of care and safeguarding wholly unacceptable. Swimming pools must maintain a secure and controlled environment, particularly for vulnerable swimmers. I would appreciate a prompt response regarding how this situation will be addressed to ensure a safer experience for all visitors. I look forward to your response and an assurance that appropriate measures will be taken.

Fantastic experience: I hadn't been to this leisure centre since i was a kid, and theyve upgraded it a lot since then! A nice new gym, a big sports hall, a running track, and a much bigger car park - which is free when u enter your reg on their tablets inside.

Negative experience: What can i say here!. Get rid of the swimming times so the public go for a swim anytime. Paid swimming lessons- never out on time so if you the public awaiting for a swim you have to wait poss between 5-8 mins on mondays weds!. Its every week! . When time comes we get in the pool late!!!!! Been like for few years . All they seem to careabout its the swimming lessons! DONT MIND PUBLIC HAVING TO WAIT! The changing rooms are something else!! Negative experience: Medway Park, where time stands still and cleanliness is just a suggestion! I began swimming lessons here last year, but it’s been a delightful game of chance. Will the pool be open? Who knows! And if it is, will my instructor show up? That’s a mystery for the ages. Oh, and let’s talk about the men’s toilets and showers — Water hotter than boiled kettle, chewing gum stuck behind the door for over a year. Urinals stink.A true testament to their commitment to hygiene! If you enjoy unpredictability and a touch of grime, this is the place for you!

Karen Evans 1 year ago

Positive experience: I have enjoyed using the pool at Medway Park for many years, but until a few months ago, has not taken part in any classes. Since becoming a member this year I have tried 3 different exercises classes , all with Jane. I am fairly unfit and wasn't sure how I would cope initially, but am now really enjoying the classes and feel my fitness has improved already, even in this short time.

Positive experience: Nice pool although the changing area is not very welcoming. Busy on a weekend.

Positive experience: Kids really enjoyed the sports camp over the summer holidays. Good variety of activities for them to participate in and they made a lot of friends. I would recommend for summer/half term clubs however as I haven’t used gym and other facilities I can’t comment on them. There I.T booking system needs a massive upgrade though hence 4/5

Negative experience: My first visit after moving to the area. No one on Reception knew where the class was and sent me on a wild goose chase. When I eventually found the class the woman would not let me join as they’d done the 10 minute warm up. I will be cancelling my membership. This is ridiculous.

Negative experience: Don’t bother. We checked the holiday timetable and came to use the diving pool, only to be turned away by rude staff telling us it was members only. No mention of that on the website! Staff were so rude and completely uncaring. Won’t be going there again.

Fantastic experience: I've just joined the gym, the process of joining was made very easy. The staff were very helpful and patient.

R X 1 year ago

Negative experience: The pro of this gym is only if you live local. The gym is extremely over priced when you position it within the market, with 3 other local gyms all priced at £20pcm, so you should expect a lot more for your money for a gym at £40pcm. The gym is very dated, they have just replaced natural lighting with some random blue lights I assume as an attempt to try make it look more modern, but it’s actually more annoying to be sat in the dark to work out. There is no space to use the weights freely, so you are restricted a lot of the time. The changing rooms are horrendous, and require a coin to use the lockers- in 2024?! The opening times at the weekend is 8-4 (both Saturday and Sunday!?) which is ridiculously short considering the price of the membership. The closest gym is 7-7 which is what I feel like you should expect for a weekend. The classes are so limited if you work office hours. I have never used the pool so can’t comment on that. The staff are not equipped to offer support on using the equipment, I had to intervene when a staff member was showing a new customer a dangerous way to use the equipment. The under 18s are always in the main gym, and no one stops them. Staff just walk past them and say nothing. I have used this gym for years as I live local, but after a 20% price increase I really don’t see any value in money in this gym. The gym is always quiet, so I can only assume that’s the reasoning for the big price increase.

Alex 1 year ago

Negative experience: Poor customer service. I had a student membership and they print out the date on the card for some reason. When this date lapses and you renew, they do not print a new card for you. A very rude and poorly trained staff member saw the lapsed date when I went in to use the machines and showed my gym card to her. She asked me "what's the date today" as if I were a child. I explained the situation that I was still a member. She then told me to go to the reception for whatever reason to show them my card, something she herself should have done. How dare you accuse me of using an outdated card that your workplace chose to keep the wrong date on. I have since switched gyms.

Arabella Sheringham 2 years ago

Negative experience: We're touring Medway pools right now. We looked at Strood pool last week and Medway Park isn't much different. Pros: choice of pools. There's a large pool for lane swim, "Boom" pool (1m deep), teaching pool and a separate diving pool. Separate family changing room area. Cons: it's visibly dirty and the family changing rooms smell like the worst public toilets you've ever experienced. Astonishing, as it's nothing a pressure washer, some bleach and cillit bang wouldn't fix. Signage poor. Worst part is pool water quality and yellow stained areas on pool floor in teaching pool. How infrequent or inefficient are their processes if the water is cloudy? Never seen anything like it.

John Jones 2 years ago

Positive experience: Not too bad a leisure centre with a good pool and gym, there is also a olympic standard running track

Michele Harvey 2 years ago

Positive experience: Use the Gym and pool regularly. It's a bit dated, but fairly clean and it's very convenient for where I live. Reminder as of 1st April 2024 kids Medway free swim cards are ceasing! They cannot be used or renewed after this time. All kids swimming will have to be paid for after 1 April 2024.

Amy Smith 2 years ago

Positive experience: UPDATE: ok so Covid rules are all over... finally! I'm a member and it's so amazingly annoying that Medway Council have done something right.... you have the option to pay for what you use so I love to swim, so I pay for "swim only" which is £20.60 a month which is brilliant. good staff one way swimming system, your not allowed inside until 10 minutes before your time. you then walk in with your mask and give your name to the man with the clipboard, he then gives you a number - the number is the same for the locker and changing room. don't forget your pound for the locker! because I did so I had to run to get a pound from reception, (got told off for standing in the wrong place). you then go to a 1 way system round the pool - slow Lane - medium lane and fast lane. stay safe

Danny Pashley 2 years ago

Negative experience: Poor facility run down expensive. I took my 14 year old daughter here just to check pool out before a race. Got charged over ten pound 3 pound to spectate £7 for daughter. Medway is a poverty area good to see your encouragement of children’s swimming.

Matthew Shapiro 2 years ago

Negative experience: Highly dislike the gym. The opening hours are far too short compared to other gyms , and the gym closes at 4 pm. on the weekend, making it inaccessible to my availability. The gym facilities overall offer a basic variety of machines (only 1 machine of every kind)and free weights in a very compressed small room upstairs. Downstairs offers a decent selection of cardio machines. There's no studio or large enough space to stretch/ do body weight exercise. There is only an awkward small space in the middle of the cardio room with 4 mats pushed together. Changing room/ showers are in horrible condition and feel dirty resembling a secondary school bathroom. There's no provision for the use of padlocks with lockers. Instead, in the cashless society of 2023, members are required to carry a coin on them every session to be able to store their things. Overall, the gym is far overpriced for what it offers. If you go to the gym irregularly and live close by, I can understand the incentive of going here. This is reflected through the average elderly age of the regular members.

J 2 years ago

Negative experience: Ageism is alive and well in Medway. A person's age should have no bearing on the fact that they are a student. What a bewildering disappointment, a stain on the face of Medway town. I pray they change their policy, or else God help us.

Positive experience: Monday night swim. Tried to not look at people in the eye, tried to not think about what is floating around in the water. Water was a little cold for me, but I am a wimp. Overall a successful swim, a reasonable swimming pool and facilities.

David Ward 2 years ago

Positive experience: The gym equipment is basically new and pool is a good size but the changing rooms for the pool needs refreshing quite badly. Grimey and smelly. The pool itself can get quite busy on Wednesdays for members sometimes see items in bottom of pool that haven't been fished out.

Fantastic experience: Just went to see about getting fitter, me 50+ and my daughter. Warmly welcomed at reception by Ann, and given a comprehensive tour by James who knew his stuff. Felt like we could be comfortable here, they have loads of high tech equipment and facilities with lovely pool area but didn't feel like you had to be a fitness expert to take advantage of the site or classes. We're signing up . Will update once we've used everything....

Positive experience: Pools are a good size (they have a large, medium and training pool for smaller children). I feel like there needs to be more signage in the changing rooms, as it can be a bit of a maze trying to find the right locker, or the way out!

Fantastic experience: Go to Medway Park for the gym, and the gym is super fun. A fun place to keep fit Also, I highly recommend getting a gym membership, because me and my mum have one. If you apply for one, you can go to the gym as often as you like.

Sarahjane Lee 2 years ago

Positive experience: This is a good local gym with running track, badminton, squash courts. There are also 2 swimming pools, the larger is split into a shallow and deeper/longer pool. There is small training pool that is warmer and shallower. There is a diving pit with 3 levels of diving boards but this pool is not always open during normal swim times. If you come to take your children to swim or diving classes then there is the option to watch your children from the viewing area. This is a seated area on an upper floor that overlooks the pools. . A heavily utilised pool with schools and swimming lessons daily. It's always worth checking swimming times via online website. Adults can buy a swim pass that allows for early morning and lunchtime swimming lanes for members only which means it's a lot less busy. There is an adult gym and also a youth gym which is for 8-16 year olds which is included in the monthly family membership subscription alternatively you can pay as you go. Free parking once you have paid for entry. There is also a separate dojo for judo but access is for members only. Negative points: Over used facilities and changing rooms / shower area for families is not fit for purpose.

Positive experience: Large swimming pool, boom pool and baby pool, all can get very busy at times. Very tired looking with lots of broken tiles. Large court areas which are easy to book during the day. Gym is fairly small but has a good range of equipment. Not manned enough and doesn't seem to have anyone around to ask about how to use the machines if unsure. The machines were very dusty and didn't look like they'd been cleaned for a while. Changing rooms are not cleaned to a good standard (photos are in just one cubical) The changing rooms are communal with separate toilet and showers areas, although have had men walking through the female area so unable to take a proper shower after swimming, would benefit from separate shower cubicles for privacy. Good array of different memberships. Parking is ample although does get filled in peak times. Parking is free for centre users, however the machines to register your number plate is quite often not working and is placed where you could easily forget to register if going straight into the gym or courts, could do with them placed on opposite wall as well. Staff are polite and cheerful but not very well informed. Overall, apart from the new build, the whole place could do with a make over and a good clean but is fairly good value for what they offer.

The pool is what it is. A Pool. If you're a serious swimmer or learning V Good. If your looking for a slide, shutes and a wave machine, It's not for you. Numerous classes. And great Track but can't really give anymore info on that one. No frills but V Good and affordable. Would recommend

Positive experience: First time. Pool is brilliant. Not at all over chlorinated Really kind friendly staff. One of the lifeguards saw I was swimming wrong and gave me some tips and a float. and showed me around right shower place. Parking isn't free, but it is cheap and lots of spaces. Do not have to be a member either!

Positive experience: Great selection of swimming lessons for kids, not so much if you're an adult and just want a swimming session that isn't at lunchtime during the week

Positive experience: One of the better running arenas primarily as it has good facilities like food and toilets and great parking. Great place to go to.

Negative experience: Changing room floor for the swimming pool feels dangerous and slippery when wet. Not as clean as it could or should be. Lane swimming not very well structured basically a free for all. Showers are rubbish very weak and Luke warm. Would not go back.

Negative experience: Absolutely horrible service. It took me and my family 4 weekends just to get the Free Swimming Cards done.We had to wait an hr in the line. Then by the time we had finished the process we were told we needed an additional adult to accompany my children. We didn’t even get to go swimming in the end.Unbelievable, and the fact that the woman at the counter dint even bother to tell us beforehand!
