Members-only gym at the University of Reading offering fitness equipment, sports & classes.

Our comment from FitFit UK about SportsPark:

SportsPark, located in Reading, United Kingdom, offers a range of facilities primarily catering to the university community and sports enthusiasts. With a great monthly price for students and a variety of equipment, the center excels in providing essential resources for general fitness.

Visitors appreciate the friendly staff and the vibrant atmosphere, especially considering the wide array of fitness classes. The squash courts receive consistent praise for their condition, and many find the gym adequately equipped for their needs.

However, several users have raised concerns about the size and dated facilities, particularly the gym area, which can feel cramped during peak hours. Some equipment appears to need refurbishment, and users have reported issues with booking courts, especially for badminton during high-demand periods.

While the center has received some negative feedback regarding customer service and mismanagement, many members acknowledge the value it offers, especially for students. Improvements in ventilation and facility maintenance have been suggested, alongside a call for stricter enforcement of booking regulations to ensure fair access for all members.

Overall, SportsPark remains a decent choice for local and university students seeking a convenient and affordable gym experience, albeit with room for improvement.

Negative experience: Small space and dated equipment, especially for the price Oh and my hoodie was stolen from changing room :/

Micky 1 month ago

Negative experience: Very disappointing experience at Sportspark. Members are consistently facing difficulties booking Badminton courts during peak hours, especially between 6pm and 9pm. Despite being paying members, it’s nearly impossible to secure a court in the evening. What makes the situation worse is that one particular group appears to be blocking multiple courts and then selling the slots to others for money. This is unfair, unethical, and goes completely against the purpose of a membership system. Management either seems unaware or unwilling to take action, which raises serious concerns about enforcement and fairness. If this issue is not addressed, it defeats the whole point of being a member. Stronger monitoring, stricter booking controls, and immediate action against misuse are urgently needed.

Positive experience: Great price per month as a student. Has all the necessities and a few extras that you need for general fitness. Slightly small, and I wish they would rerack and clean up at the end of each day. Coming in when they open (7am is a bit late in my opinion), it's quite frequently messy. Not overly messy, but still.

Negative experience: Gym is tired. Everything feels like it hasn't been updated or upgraded since 2010 when this was an outstanding gym. The water machine churns out disgusting metallic tasting warm water in the summer. The toilets are old. Not dirty but everything needs a refresh including the equipment in the gym, particularly the weight machines are either not working. Such as the seated row, the leg press or the covers are worn out completely like it is on the arm curl machine. Pretty poor overall, apart from the air con which is good. 18 degrees perfect temperature to work out in. I joined on a £25 vacation membership. There is no way im paying £49 a month when you have gyms like pure gym for £25 with brand new equipment and the sixth upgrade since 2013, where here has not had one since 2012.

Negative experience: My daughter and I decided to use the university offer for the summer £25 per month. When we joined we were told it starts from when we book in for the class, I joined and my daughter tried to join but it would not work, she repeatedly tried and could not get it to work, a few weeks ago we went back in and we were told she had not been set up probably and we were at that point given a sheet with her member id, which to that point she hadn’t had. We were also reassured not to worry as she had not been her £25 would start when she registered. Again she tried and could not get access, trying her email address and mine in case the wrong email address had been inputted. Today 31st July I called as she is getting no where with it and the helpful girl on the phone checked all and noted her email address had been input incorrectly into the system, not her mistake, she changed it and said give it a few minutes and it should all work for her. We did that and she now has access but charging her so I called back to be informed she would have to pay again. The chap I spoke to spoke to his manager and no understanding of the fact this was due to a fault on their side, absolutely disgusting treatment. Customer care is appalling.

Positive experience: Very good price (£162 for 6 months as a student) and lots of equipment and classes, however, can get VERY busy and oddly there’s no music on in the mornings.

Positive experience: Been using the squash courts here for many years. Nice staff. Haven't used the gym facilities, but they look good. Shame that the cafe has been discontinued.

Positive experience: Decent gym for students. Peak hours can get quite full and you'll struggle to find equipment to use. Good thing is they are open from morning until late. Equipment itself is usually refurbished from time to time, well worn in bars that feel good to lift, and has basically everything you need. The staff are friendly, but the plates are a bit all over the place. I've been going for nearly 3 years and they've increased the price marginally but it is still reasonable by my standards. My original complaint was that the actual gym area is too small for a university gym, but they are opening a new section which I'm excited to see. Overall it's a decent gym and nothing shabby.

Fantastic experience: Receptionist: Hira I’ve had a consistently positive experience with Hira as the receptionist at the gym. She is always welcoming and friendly, greeting members with a warm smile and ensuring that everyone feels comfortable upon arrival. Hira is also highly organized and efficient, whether handling check-ins, managing bookings, or answering questions. What stands out most is her ability to handle busy periods calmly and professionally. Even when the front desk is crowded, she remains attentive and patient with every guest. Hira’s approachable demeanor and willingness to assist make her a great asset to the gym. It’s clear that she is dedicated to providing excellent service, and her presence greatly enhances the overall atmosphere of the gym. Highly recommended!

Roberta Mosiewicz 1 year ago

Negative experience: Staff from reception is often unfriendly. Had to pay 5£ extra because my card rejected and I HAVE NOT been told that when I subscribed. Every time u forget to attend a class it’s 5£ even if u have monthly subscription and I also haven’t been told that when I subscribed, had to find out when I forgot about on of the classes. The gym is busy at most times. The best things there are the classes but they r always so full that it is hard to book.

Fantastic experience: Very nice Gym! Sufficient equipment and friendly people! The only thing that doesnt make sense are the prices. Students pay around 25 per month whereas any other member nearly 50 which is a huge difference. I dont get it.

Positive experience: With 2 EV charging machines, and clean and well-maintained premises, this is a nice place.

aaav AAAT 1 year ago

Negative experience: Don't bother: all the good reviews are from uni students who get massively discounted prices. For the community it is a different story: extortionate facilities prices, and the cafe, apart from never being open in the evening, never stock a bottle or can of pepsi or coke diet or otherwise, not even a sparkling water. You'll do better at either of the other four leisure centers in the region.

Lemono Sharky 2 years ago

Positive experience: It is really confusing to walk through the first few times because it feels like there is an unlimited number of doors. However, the courts inside are actually really good. Decently spacious and has good overall facilities. If you want to train yourself up in a particular sport e.g. badminton, volleyball, squash etc. this is the place to do it at. Highly recommended for any active university students.

Negative experience: A fairly good gym close to the centre of campus, however as others have said, it gets very cramped once past 4-5PM. The music is also extremely loud and bass heavy which is a distractions. For some reason the treadmills limit the amount of time you can spend on them so I often have to rush to get the miles in which has led to almost constant foot injuries. In summary, it’s an ok gym for casual goers or short cardio sessions and 1st years with not much better to do, but for anyone else will be a stuffy, hot and loud experience.

Fantastic experience: Lovely place, two floors in the gym, nice spacious locker room and locker options. Prices are also good and they are opened 8-10 and 8-9 on weekends. Haven't explored everything but there is no swimming pool is what I know. Workers are lovely, cooperate, and nice to talk to.

Ollie Leat 2 years ago

Positive experience: A really good gym with a decent variety of machines and lots of classes available. However, it does feel like it lacks some space when it gets busy particularly in the evening. I’d recommend going earlier in the day if you want an uninterrupted workout.

Max Tingay-Holt 2 years ago

Negative experience: The gym is way too small for a UNIVERSITY gym. It either needs changing to have more equipment or needs to be open for longer because once you hit 4/5 o’clock, there’s not much point in going until 9 but because it closes at 10, you’re workout has to be rushed a little. Only reason it gets 2 stars is due to its ease of access, especially for a first year student

Negative experience: I'm sorry but the university gym ain't even it. It's too small, the lights are too dim, it's not fully equipped, it appears to be in a constant state of disarray with plates and bars all over the place. Not even worth the price I paid for. Management tried to upsell me at first and they refused to let me cancel until after 2 months.

Razvan Alin Chiuzbaian 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: This is just great, only play 6-a side footy there but it’s always great and now they have resurfaced the pitches which is so much better. It’s clean like no other pitch in Reading and staff is respectful as well.

Fantastic experience: It's great for everything ! Only one thing: gym could be bigger, much bigger because it's popular but as it is it's fine. Update: first floor is much better laid out with free weights, benches and resistance machines upstairs and a larger free exercise area. So if you're lazy you don't have to go downstairs to work out Also, the cardio machines - treadmills, crosstrainers etc. have been dragged into the 2020s with updated displays and connectivity functions. In other words, you can watch your favorite binge eating YouTube channel while working out !! Yummy !!

Kit 5 years ago

Positive experience: This is my local Gym, which is the official gym for the University of Reading. So the nice thing is that in term time, there are lots of students to share it with, which makes the atmosphere fun at times! I love the excercise classes, especially with people like Sally and Anja, and the majority of the gym attendants are lovely and help me a huge amount with questions! Ashley, Junior, Kat and Nadia are the best. Does sometimes get a bit busy and cramped in term time, so hopefully they will extend it soon! On the campus so near lots of nice scenery and places to eat and play sport etc. I play at the tennis courts here too, and they have been my home tennis courts for many, many years. Once they built the new 'bubble' on the tennis courts there, the indoor court charges are quite large. The bubble itself was supposed to have cost ~800,000 pounds, but it's astounding that it cost that because it is just an old fashioned tent with an airlock... Very mystifying - someone is laughing that they were paid that amount for this structure.

Fantastic experience: Staff are all super friendly and helpful. Great for people who are new to fitness as you can easily access all the support you need to feel confident in the gym. Plenty of natural light in the fitness studio. A fairly even mix of men and women on most days which is nice. Would 100% recommend!

Richard Weston 6 years ago

Positive experience: Great wide ranging facilities here, particularly if you like playing squash or other fringe sports you can pay an additional membership fee for use of these which is a great option. They have an online booking system which works great from your computer but the mobile Android app constantly crashes on the booking app and I overheard others talking about it between themselves too. So many sports on offer at a great membership price, you're not going to have the luxury of a high-end gym facilities but you certainly will have access to a while host of choices. The staff are always super nice and friendly too. Overall I recommend the facilities for anyone, if they fix the Android (can't say if iOS has issues) app problems then it would be amazing. if you're into or interested in Squash, there is a squash club we joined on Sundays who were more than accomodating for beginners and the guy who runs it (Richard) is a delight and will point you in the right direction.
