McKinstry Family Karate

Fantastic experience: Sending our daughter to McKinstry Family karate was one of the best decisions we ever made. She wasn’t sure whether martial arts would be for her, but from the very first lesson, she loved it. That was nearly 3 years ago and she still looks forward to every training session. The emphasis is on self discipline, respect and self defence, all of which are so valuable. Iain McKinstry, the owner, founder and senior instructor sets a really positive tone. He expects a high standard from the students, but leads very kindly, patiently and by example. The school’s values of, “Stand Strong. Grow Every Day. Fight for What is Right” aren’t just words. Iain embodies this and this ethos runs through all sessions. If you want your child to learn skills, self -defence, build strength, fitness and be amongst other lovely kids, I highly recommend McKinstry Family Karate.

Fantastic experience: My family and I have been training at McKinstry Family Karate since Mar 17; it has always been an excellent place to learn Martial Arts and train, but the work that has gone into it over the past year has made it truly outstanding. I highly recommend the Dojang to anyone aspiring to learn Martial Arts, or just improve their fitness. Instruction is provided in a friendly and professional manner, aimed at building confidence, knowledge and friendship- as well as the fine points of the Art itself.

Fantastic experience: My son is neurodiverse so i was extremely anxious about him starting a new club and especially something so disciplined as Karate however I definitely shouldn’t of been! He has progressed to a 2nd Geup before he’s even 9 years of age with the support, patience and encouragement from Ian. I am truly thankful for finding Mckinstry and how much it’s had a beneficial effect on my son, he is stronger, better coordinated and more focussed in school. It is so more than just a karate class. We cannot wait to see his progression continue with Mckinstry Family Karate

Fantastic experience: We found it quite hard finding a school specifically for karate. Really glad we found this place. The teachers are brilliant and there is a real family friendly atmosphere. My son is a latish starter at 13 and he is loving it. Also the app that the school uses makes payments and booking lessons super easy. I highly recomend McKinstry Family Karate.

Fantastic experience: My son started in July after a big setback from a different club (not karate). He chose Mckinstry karate from passing in the car and we haven’t looked back. He would go every day if he could! Ian is absolutely brilliant and just has a way that means all of the children have fun and learn, but respect him all at the same time.

Fantastic experience: we are 3 weeks in since my 11 year old started. we have found this club very friendly and welcoming. my daughter has settled in really well and loves coming. She has come on so much with her confidence and self esteem and has gained an amazing focus for growth mentally and physically. My can be very anxious starting new clubs so this says a lot for how she’s made to feel and how she is enjoying it.

Fantastic experience: My daughter hasn't long started there, but is already feeling the benefits! She feels fitter and more confident already. Everyone there is really friendly and supportive. The other students are very welcoming and she looks forward to going to every session.

Fantastic experience: A great martial arts school and easily my boys' favourite club to attend. They have been coming here since the age of 3; they are now aged 8 and 6. Both boys have had and continue to have such a wonderful journey of skill, self-confidence, endurance and learning the art of patience. I have watched them grow from little toddlers running around to confident young boys; following instruction, building strength and enjoying themselves whilst doing it. The students in the club celebrate one another, learn and grow together. So in short, impressive club and great value for money.

Fantastic experience: Superb school: my daughter has been going here for nearly 9 years and will be going for her 2nd Dan this year. She really enjoys going and its helped shape her into the confident, strong, respectful young woman she is today. My youngest has just joined and is also enjoying it. The school is fun and enjoyable but at the same time, teaches them to be tough yet respectful. If you’ve got young kids and are looking for something to keep them entertained, keep them in shape and at the same time giving them the tools to deal with any trouble or bullies they will inevitably encounter in life, I recommend bringing them along!

Fantastic experience: Well organised martial arts school with clear, good instruction. Teaches all willing students excellent skills, both physically and mentally. My daughter has been training with Iain McKinstry for 3 years and he's taken her from strength to strength and keeps a high standard of students. This is a safe environment for all ages to learn a wonderful martial art. Highly recommend this club.

Positive experience: Fab place for the young ones . My daughter has been only going 4wks and her confidence is slowly getting there . She still gets me involved :-) but the instructors let that happen as they see she is growing each time . She loves going and especially taking part in the obstacle part at the end . Xx

Fantastic experience: I started attending Mr. McKinstry's classes when I was 8. They've always been a great experience, and have got me through to Second Dan. The atmosphere is friendly and the classes are extremely helpful as well as enjoyable.

Iain and the other senior members are a credit to the sport and the club, and really put the new starters at ease and enabled my son to settle in and feel a part of the club whilst giving him the grounding in the basics of Soo Bahk Do karate.

Fantastic experience: My son has been attending for nearly 3 years since he was 4 years old. He loves going every Friday night and Saturday morning. Each lesson is run exceptionally well. All the pupils work hard but have a fun time and always leave smiling. I would happily recommend McKinstry Family Martial Arts to anyone who is considering taking up a martial art.
