Riviera Hotel: Opinions

Negative experience: It's such a shame as the building is deteriorating. This building is going to want a load of money thrown at it to get it back in shape. Will it still be viable after that? I love the look of the building and its location. Will it ever come back as a hotel? Who knows, Hi De Hi, campers!

Negative experience: Seen the Shining? Yeah............ This place might have been lovely in the 70s, however its not had a lick of paint since - it could be amazing if they spent several million on the place, however it'll struggle until then. Single pane windows had us worried for safety, the first room we were assigned had an almighty crack in the window which didn't fill us with confidence - so asked to move (which they reluctantly obliged) then the next room wasn't much better.

Negative experience: Was on holiday at the nearby campsite, we saw a sign saying open to non residents, having been holidaying in weymout our entire lives, we thought we would go look at the iconic hotel they catches everyone’s eyes! Which we hadn’t of bothered, the roof is falling apart due to the storm last year, the car park looked like a scene from walking dead, pure neglect! The pool looked as though it now belonged to something other then humans, but the worst part was the rude man who came and told us we can’t get to the sea from here, we told him we new that, but before we could ask him why we was there he said again you have to go that way and pointed to the exit! It’s a shame to see that hotel in its current state but I wouldn’t stay there as it is, not even for a £1! Il stick the the amazing campsite

Negative experience: Although the hotel seems to be refurbished it's not something I would return to anymore. Impression of an eastern hotel in comunists era. Very poor front desk service, rooms looked clean at the first view but were not at the second.. First impression when we were forgot to be given card for electricity and after finding that only one little bathroom window was locked without key was disappointing. Card was given to us promptly but window couldn't be unlocked because cleaner locked it and it could be unlocked by maintenance guy only who was not there and should not arrive until the other day. We were advised to use fan to get steam out from the bathroom but when I looked where to switch it on I realised there is actually no fan over there. Breakfasts satisfactory.

Negative experience: Despite sign outside saying welcome to non residents, when we drove into the car park of the very run down hotel, I got out to take a photo and a very rude angry man suddenly appeared and asked us rudely to leave. I was going to enquire about hotel and how much would it be to stay here. AsilBut blimey, rude angry man would put anyone off. Must have been gorgeous in its heyday but not now.

Negative experience: Nothing makes up for the shabby, dirty, insect-infested rooms. In spite of it's historic Art Deco facade, the photographs are misleading. Everything was filthy, including the linen. The carpets and curtains were frayed. There were cobwebs and spiders everywhere. The room was not ready at when we arrived at 5:30pm (it was the case for a few other guests too). We were told to wait in the bar, but no complimentary drinks were offered nor a discount. When the room was finally 'cleaned' there was no TV remote. After two visits to reception, when they failed to provide a working one, I could do nothing but stare at the grubby walls and wonder how they had the cheek to call this 'luxury' and charge £120 for the privilege. If you are a big fan of Art Deco, look at it from the outside and then get out of there as fast ast you can!

Negative experience: Absolutely terrible, looks abandoned pool is stone cold and only half filled steam room out of order. Kitchens are closed so even though paid for breakfast there wasn't any and no refund and no staff on departure to talk to about problems. Light in bathroom was hanging out of ceiling. Only 1 toilet roll in bathroom. Beds are solid not very happy

Negative experience: Nothing like pictures on web site the place is run down and under staffed the people I spoke to who were staying there wasn't happy and couldn't wait to leave. The staff were trying hard to do what they could but everything to me came across as struggling to keep the place going. Great views and close to sea noise from the boom boom music next door didn't go down well with me.in my mind I didn't feel it was value for money and feel we could have done a lot better somewhere else. Check out google satellite and other picture to get a better idea then it's up to you.

Negative experience: Have been visiting Weymouth for many years and just wanted to check out this hotel, it stated on the sign open to non residents. As we approached reception I took a photograph of the front of the building as it is very retro. At this a woman came out and asked abruptly can I help you?, I said we were just out walking and she just walked away. Pretty poor first impression.

Gemeheme 3 years ago

Negative experience: Beautiful view from window as we got room with view to sea side. We had to pay 500£ for 5 nights which you have bigger expectation for this price, state of room needs upgrading , from dirty walls in my room to squeaky bed frames. We could here people next door talking - very thin walls. We stayed there for few nights and we just got one big towel as they run out if it.

Lisa Clark 3 years ago

Negative experience: If I could give 0 stars I would ! For £100 a night I’m shocked at the state of the rooms and of the building it self! The kettle was unusable, there was stains on the walls, rips and stains on carpet the electric heater was rusty! And there was hairs on the bed and someone’s dirty t-shirt hanging on the back of the bathroom door! It’s such a shame it could be a fantastic place to stay! The only good thing was the views across Weymouth bay!

Michelle Hines 3 years ago

Negative experience: Really disappointing, the bin hadn't even been emptied in our bedroom still had the previous guest stuff in it. The teaspoon was dirty. Thankgod it was just for one night the walls so thin could here every noise. Loud drunken people outside near our room door. The toliet was dirty urine still under the seat, I had to clean it myself really not acceptable. The double bed was rock hard didn't hardly get any sleep uncomfortable night not to mention the door didn't look safe,so didn't bother leaving the room. The parking not great very tight. Hardly room to move the car. My advice don't stay here look further a field. I didn't want to stay the moment I saw the hotel looks dirty and old. The reception clean Spotless posh looking the rest of the place where you actually sleep and wash... Mmmm a different story. For £88 a night not worth it I've stayed at other places for less and better quality. Please avoid!

Negative experience: The one member of staff for the entire 4 days was nice and friendly. Room was not clean at all; hairs and bogeys and potentially blood amongst other numerous stains on the sheets. Clearly made no attempt to hide them either. Mattress was old sunken very creaky probably at least 15 years old. Appliances were sticky to the touch, dust was on all surfaces bathroom hadnt been cleaned hairs in bath, urine on the toilet seat. The only clean thing appeared to be the towels. Loud pipes banging whenever anyone in the hotel used the taps. Room isn't touched by staff for the entire stay. Only good thing is the views which we didn't have as we unbeknownst to us we had a room behind the hotel in what looked like temporary prefab buildings. This was 2 double rooms for 3 nights £600 expecting a lot more for £100 a night without breakfast.

Fantastic experience: How unfair are all these reviews. The location alone makes this stay more than worth the money it' makes me really sad to see all these poor reviews that actually made me really nervous about visiting until we arrived my God what an absolutely beautiful place. Yes it needs some tlc but it's nothing like what people have reviewed it our room was clean and had amazing views. I can't understand why people have reviewed it so badly. The staff were amazing and we checked in on time and room was ready with no waiting. The hotel was peaceful and room had everything we needed. What a place. All these complaint are pretty sad as people don't understand when this beautiful place gets renovated the prices per room will be alot more. Thanks riviera for our beautiful stay. We will be back.

Negative experience: This place is literally falling down, go round the back and see were the roof has collapsed . The ballroom is derelict ( got photos to prove everything ) as is the venue room. We booked on booking .com , they should be sued for fraud!!! The photos on their site are years old. The outside pool has not been used for more than three years, the whole place is grubby , run down and smells of damp. We had enough after one night , my wife was couvered in flee bites. Booking .com are so misleading ( should be on rip off britain) please dont waste your money and stay here it is so disgusting. Unless your homeless or a refugee who they housed here during covid!!

Positive experience: A quite dated hotel that must have been fabulous back in its heyday. Sadly now in need of some TLC and upgrading. However, for all its faults it was still fantastic value for money. I paid £350.00 for two rooms for two nights. The same dates at the Weymouth Premier Inn, just down the road, would have been in excess of £700.00. The hotel was understaffed, as are many these days, but the receptionist/barmaid was very obliging as were the two male cleaners. We've stayed in worse places and paid a lot more for the privilege. Would we go back? Definitely, no doubt about it especially if we could get the same rooms (I won't mention the numbers because everyone will want them)

Felicity Wood 3 years ago

Negative experience: Such a shame, as it's a beautiful building and could be really nice hotel. But we waited for ages to check in, some people had been waiting over 2 hours for their room. The bar wasn't open until 6pm - on a Saturday in August! When the receptionist finally turned up they got into an argument with a customer who was fed up of waiting. The receptionist then stormed off in tears, at that point we figured we weren't going to be able to check in any time soon. It was surreal. Read the reviews before you book and go elsewhere.

Robert Bajan 3 years ago

Negative experience: The room was not ready at the point of my check in....Came back an hour later to find out not enough staff to clean rooms.I got an advice from a receptionist who was lone member of staff to go to the beach! The hotel was smelly and scraffy....I gave up and left.Lost £130 ! Please avoid this hotel! I don't know who the owner is of this fine establishment. They should be ashamed of themselves. The service wasn't provided,no staff.. I would like to get my money back!

Positive experience: Well to start with Weymouth is a beautiful town and would be coming back here but this hotel no I don't think so from a Distance it looks really nice hotel but the closer you get the More it looks dated anyway we checked in get to the room and the room are OK nothing special. We have a look around and see the pool outside Hahahaha that has been not in use in a few years by the look of it then the indoor pool was out of order for the direction of our stay. We stayed here for three nights two of those nights we had people coming in to are room while me and my girlfriend was in bed. So not good hahahaha

Charlie baker 3 years ago

Negative experience: Where to begin. The photos of the hotel are very misleading, on arrival you can clearly see the outdated decor and the deterioration of the property, paint flaking everywhere you look, very rundown. The reception staff did not seem to know what they were doing, organised chaos to put it politely. On are way to our room located at the back of the property you could see old bedding, toilet rolls just strewn across the lawn. The door to the room was really hard to open, damp carpet, broken curtains, spiders everywhere, hard bed, damp smell throughout room, mould on the bathroom ceiling and you can hear noise from anyone walking past and in adjacent rooms. The only thing that would do the property any favours is a bulldozer. It is such a shame to be writing this!! My sister got married here 10 years ago and it was beautiful. To see how it has deteriorated and not been cared for is such a shame. Would love to see it have a revamp as the location is perfect for a seaside holiday with lovely views

Positive experience: On our arrival , my mother in law's room smelled so badly of drains or sewage , that it was un sleepable in ! So should never have been let put in that condition ., We had to go and buy beach and cleaning products within an hour of arrival . Window in my room would not fully close For the sheer stress my mum in law had on first night I feel that that night should be refunded in full , without question .as they had no other room free to put her and my father in law in . Now let's move on... my window got fixed , a nice guy came and sorted that .And someone came to try and deal with smell in the in laws room ..which she had almost managed to get under control , although two days later it was back .again Liz in reception did her best for us . Although their did seem to be a national shortage of toilet roll at this hotel . Breakfast was excellent, the scenery is awesome , the rooms were clean and comfortable, apart from the god awful room my mother in law was in , 226 ..no working extractor fan , not working heated towel rail , and the smell of a cesspit God awful family lower level down , shouting swearing, littered the entire front of building with pizza boxes , smoked weed , and that smell pervaded the above rooms , and the blue badge parking only , should have signs outside the hotel on the verges to clarify this in big bold signage ,as people not even resident parked up and we could not get parked .despite having blue badge and staying here ! The staff are working so hard to keep things in good order , and if they repaired things or investigated them ,this hotel and it's iconic status Would be a great treasure You need someone who can use some authority to manage rowdy and unsociable parking and behaviour. , And definitely a drug ban !! The Riviera Maya be in need of a refurb , but her position In weymouth is enviable ..and the staff try and keep it together . We would come back here .if these points and room concerns were addressed Poor Liz, sue and John are desperately doing their utmost .the owner needs to reward them , and improve on this what could be breathtaking hotel .

Negative experience: NOs....Very tired looking hotel, really needs renovations. Price too high for this hotel. £115.00 for double room with sea view, but you had to walk out of the room and stretch your neck a bit to see the sea, don't pay extra for Sea view! Room clean-ish, don't look too closely. Shower not hot and no force to the jet. PLUS SIDE.....quiet location. Free Parking on site. Large bed.

John Dickens 3 years ago

Negative experience: We stayed in this hotel for one night, we booked a room with a sea view at extra cost, no problem, we got there and got the keys to the room, well we could see the sea if we came out of the room and looked 1/2 a mile to the left .. the hotel looks very dated and in desperate need of renovations. The outside swimming pool looks like it’s been unused for a long time.. the room was ok the shower was very poor only warm water .. but on the plus side it was very peaceful there.. in my opinion it wasn’t worth the £115 for the night…

Tina Lang 3 years ago

Negative experience: Old, unclean, pack of staff, noisy, not worth money a really disappointing stay and I won’t come back. Hairs in beds, first chipped cups and faulty lock on the door.a shocking place, book elsewhere

Sharon Bundy 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: My favourite place to be!! Clean and comfortable rooms. Extremely good value for money and warm and friendly staff. I would highly recommend that you book breakfast , I paid more in Weymouth for a greasy spoon fry-up. If you want a peaceful break this is the place to be . Oh and the beach is 5 seconds away and very excluded. PERFECT!

Thomas B 3 years ago

Positive experience: Definitely it was good place couple of years ago. At the moment from 2020 is for sale. Maby because of pandemic? I'm not sure what's going on. It was nice to see this building from outside like "Havana hotel" Otherwise nothing special, rooms were not very clean. We just escape very quick and definitely will not come back.

Karen Gibbons 3 years ago

Negative experience: I've given 2 stars for the location, which gives spectacular views across the bay, and the clean bed linen. The room was clean even though it was in a poor condition. The main building is faded, peeling and crumbling. Inside, most facilities are closed off. We only saw one member of staff and he was very harassed. We were staying for a Saturday night and received an email saying there was no food but it turned out that food was being served. We ate elsewhere. Breakfast was available at £13.99 which was very expensive for what was advertised. The hotel says it has disabled access and my father has breathing and mobility issues. However, the carpark is an uphill walk and we were placed in the buildings behind the main hotel (think the worst Butlins chalets and you are almost there) accessed by a step ramp and rickety metal stairs. I asked if he could be moved but was told all rooms were full - something I find hard to believe. We also had the misfortune of a stag party in the rooms below who were very rowdy.

Andy Burridge (Schumilunar) 3 years ago

Negative experience: Rooms are damp and dank. The windows wouldn't open or close properly and the front door to the room was hard to close properly. It all felt like a cheap motel. Length of stay 40 mins. Not good.

Stacy Burridge 3 years ago

Negative experience: Where do I start.... Booked this place as a short break for my husband and I for my 40th birthday, photos looked amazing, I guess good camera work and lighting can do that. When we arrived outside looked nothing like the photos very run down really, checked in, paid before actually getting to see the room, man at the front desk was blunt and not very helpful, go to our room and as soon as we walked in it smelt damp, we tried to ignore it check out the rest of the room, show head had hairs on it, heated towel rail was covered in rust, windows didn't open or close properly, bed was so hard and bedding smelt and felt damp, no internet that we were not told about, no evening meals available, to be honest it felt like a cheap rundown motel, we cancelled our stay after 30 minutes to be told we will be charged for 1 nights stay anyway, luckily we booked a lovely hotel on Weymouth beach front for roughly the same price, but obviously ended up £100 out of pocket, location was good but that's the only positive I can take of our experience at this hotel.

James Archer 3 years ago

Negative experience: I was under no allusions when booking this hotel. I knew it was a going concern. It’s currently run by a skeleton crew doing the bare minimum. It’s clean and tidy. Yes paint is flaking off the outside and it has seen better the days. The bed in the room was hard but comfortable. And shower and basin and toilet all worked well with hot and cold water. The breakfast was of a good standard and very tasty. And the view was amazing and worth it. However would have liked the choice of an early breakfast at 7am as I was running in a race at 9am. Even if that was just cereal. The bad points Random signs everywhere saying how things were closed and not working. No food in restaurant, but I knew that. The Leisure centre was open but the pool was not headed and too cold to swim. This may have been mentioned but I missed it, I was disappointed as the pool was the selling point for me booking here. The sea was warmer. Same with all the plumbing, steam room was closed, sauna however worked! Outside pool empty of watt and closed. Cars abandoned everywhere rather than in the car park. The notices up everywhere where standard print at home signs. Nothing from an official hotel point of view with no logo. There was no information booklet in the rooms. Standard room price for sea view was £109. I added on breakfast. Personally I think it was worth closer to £50-90. But location location location. So I’m not going to complain about the price. But I will score it according so others know what to expect.

Sarah Sloan 3 years ago

Negative experience: Where should I begin? The hotel advertises 2 pools, internal and external. The external pool doesn't look like it has been filled in years and there is a "smaller" spa type pool outside that is filled with brown sludge (potentially mud but who knows?). The facilities are really outdated, most of the toilets in the main building do not work. The restaurant was closed and so was the bar. THERE IS NO WI-FI - so you can't even escape from the depressing surroundings. When you arrive there are two notes on the desk, the first one being lost keys will be charged at £50 and the second one stating "No refunds after you have checked out" The property is in an appalling state. The photo's are not true representations of how it is currently. It would however be suitable for a zombie apocalypse movie to be filmed there.

Adam Hobbs 3 years ago

Positive experience: The outside of the hotel is "Good from far, far from good" As I walked along the upper corridor to my room, my thoughts were, if the room is as shabby as the outside of the hotel, this will be fun!! But, to be fair, the room was well appointed, clean with a warm shower. Breakfast was good, and staff friendly. The location overlooking the beach is great.

MR T NAZIM 3 years ago

Negative experience: I was going to book a night here, thought I'd take a drive there first before booking just incase it was not worth it. I'm glad we didn't book because as we arrived and parked in the car park, we could see the housekeeper working outside the room on the first floor landing... He had the clean bedsheets in his hands.. touching the railing on the balcony, looking down.. why would I want to lay in a bed that's been touched by railings lol. After seeing that I drove off to a better hotel much further away - and enjoyed my stay thanks for saving me the hassle of booking a night. I would recommend you keep an eye on your housekeepers.

Alec Bradshaw 3 years ago

Negative experience: The whole place was run down not worth £50 a night no evening meals had to go elsewhere. Photo looking out of the door good view I don't think.

Sam T 3 years ago

Negative experience: Arrived at 3.30 thinking we could check in as it was advertised as 3pm check in, room was not ready had to wait until 6pm to get in. Put in a room at the back which was basic but expected that, door hard to open and gap all around it causing a draft and constant rattling. No hot water so unable to shower. Lots of very unhappy customers. Thank goodness for the receptionist Gemma who opened the bar early to keep people happy. The management nowhere to be seen. Very poor service when you are paying for a hotel. The only thing in its favour is the view but other than that I would say stay away!

Subha Ali 3 years ago

Negative experience: Very run-down, cobwebs everywhere even in the rooms, paint chipping, and stains on the walls. This place looks very dodgy, and the cleanliness is intolerable. Managed to cancel due to the incredible women at reception. Do not recommend.

Clare Hindes 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: This hotel has so many faults such as cold shower, uncomfortable beds but it makes up in charm and character! The location is at the end of Weymouth beach so it’s about 45 minutes to walk in. The views are fantastic and there is a great beach bar. The staff in the hotel go out of their way to be friendly especially Belinda. She always had a smile for us all be it Morning or night! It would be good if the pool was working and an outside bar but what a building! Art Deco at its best. It’s been a great stay! Love it here and we will be back

Mr S 3 years ago

Positive experience: Service: spot on Staff: good and friendly Breakfast: delicious Dinner: tasty Swimming pool: freezing Room: windows were only single glazed meaning you can hear everything going on outside of the room, there was no sound insulation, I could hear someone watching Britain's got talent extremely clearly from an adjacent room, the room was clean though, although we did find the bottom guide shoes from the shower door cubicle were detached meaning we had to manipulate the shower door shut, also if too many people in other rooms around the hotel were using showers, you would run out of pressure, cannot moan at how close we were to the beach

nigel turner 3 years ago

Positive experience: Excellent customer service from all staff Food was very good, thought breakfast was a bit expensive but was again very good. Only reason didn't get 5stars, bed far too hard for my liking and couldn't get lights over both mirrors to work.

Positive experience: Positive -very nice, friendly staff -stunning beach view -clean, renovated rooms -flat screen tv -clean breakfast area -a good selection for breakfast -restaurants and arcade nearby Negativ -NO Wi-Fi !!!! -very run down place -cob webs everywhere -moldy windows -paper thin walls -broken outdoor furniture -small rooms -very far away from town center

Positive experience: Lovely scenery. Looks nicer than it is, the outside needs a good professional coat of paint to liven it up. Room was ok shower temperamental mostly cold. Staff were pleasant. Mediocre stay

Sonette Schwartz 3 years ago

Negative experience: Avoid! We were charged £119 for a room that was the worst I have ever seen. The shower only had cold water, the TV didn’t work, the WiFi was non-existent and the bed was terrible. The bathroom had no extractor fan or external window; as a result the room smelt musty. We could hear every conversation of people walking past and in the next room. One person said: ‘this dump needs to be bulldozed’. At 12:30am I agreed with him. If we hadn’t spent £119; I wouldn’t have minded so much! Please avoid! The photo’s are misleading!

Shane Ward 3 years ago

Positive experience: The staff was friendly and welcoming but couldn’t use the inside pool as was freezing cold and outside pool was shut . Room was ok size but smelt bit damp and was very dusty and there was hair as if some 1 just had a shave in the bathroom sink could be a very nice hotel again if some 1 put money and time in to the building . Still was a good holiday

clive newman 3 years ago

Negative experience: Ok for one night, rooms are small and smell a bit damp the bed was very squeaky the windows are single glazed so the morning seagulls can be a problem, but the main problem for a family would be the shower which is very dangerous for kids because the temperature control goes from very cold to burning hot with the slightest of adjustment. The Breakfast was ok. Location is quite good.

simon waddilove 3 years ago

Negative experience: Definitely needs some investment. It's a shame cos it's a cracking location with views of the whole bay. Rooms weren't the cleanest and freezing. Our room had electric but the TV remote didn't work. Bath room was pretty rank. Definitely wouldn't stay more than a night. Investment needed

Jayne Rudge 3 years ago

Negative experience: Stayed here for one night room needs a good painting marks and pencil scribbles over the wall. Radiator paint peeling and rusty. Gap down side of the door window wouldn't close easy enough to pull open from outside. Bed uncomfortable and squeaky which led to a bad nights sleep. The only good thing was the view and the driveway out. Wouldnt stop here again

Negative experience: HIGHLY UNRECOMMENDED, DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY Terrible hotel. Personal is rude. Room is dirty, another guest hairs in your bed and shower Pool is freaking cold, steam room not working. Shower licking next 4 hours after use HIGHLY UNRECOMMENDED, DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Negative experience: The worst hotel I stayed in!!! I just can't believe this hotel is still opened: smelly rooms, poor facilities (don't believe the pictures) and breakfast below standards. This hotel needs to be rebuilt from top to bottom. The staff is nice but I am afraid, it is not enough to stay over there. A real disappointment!

Mitch Hepper 3 years ago

Negative experience: Hotel was horrendous, I paid £200 for two nights however only spent about 20 minutes in the room. The carpet was ripped up, the windows didn’t shut, the radiator was rusty and hanging off the wall and the toilet wouldn’t even flush.

Negative experience: Extremely disappointed with the room we got given, absolutely appalling. Compared to the refurbished reception/restaurant they have, the rooms were nowhere near as clean or as nice. Would not recommend.

Negative experience: The hotel Riviera & outside area, is in shocking disrepair. Don't expect to use the Pool it's freezing. The rooms look nothing like the Website photos. We were moved from our original room as the toilet & shower were dirty. Second room wasn't much better. Shower had to be replaced & repaired, bathroom heater didn't work & the Window didn't close in the bathroom & there was mould around the window as well. Other than the Beautiful View They shouldn't be charging people to stay there. The rooms are small, smelly & Damp. We couldn't stay another night it was that bad. We got a full refund for our 2nd night & Moved into Weymouth Town to a B&B overlooking the Harbour.

Alex Ward 3 years ago

Positive experience: Use the Leisure facilities regularly, however since the returning after lockdowns the pool feels cold which is a shame as it used to be a lovely temperature. Also the showers have never been warm and now the sauna is not in use. It costs £6 for a swim which is about the same price as other local hotels, however the facilities are not on par. The staff are friendly and helpful, but the hotel is looking tired and dated. It's a shame because I will always try and support a local establishment but the owners seemed to have lost interest and want to reinvest the minimum required.

Positive experience: Nice hotel. Room suited our needs and we had a restful night, but could have been cleaned better.. Great views of the coast. Breakfast was bad and wouldn't advise having it at this hotel.

Positive experience: this hotel in its day must have been a Beautiful sight .it's situated right near good amenities (beach and a nice cafe ) it's a bit run down at the mo,the staff worked tirelessly and were very polite and welcoming, couldn't do enough for you .our room was very clean and enough for 2 people , shower was good and bed was magic.the only downside was going into town you needed taxis but at just under a £10 it's something you have to put up with . all in all a good weekend

Christine Padfield 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: We had a lovely stay. Yes it looks a little tired from the outside but the owner lives abroad and the staff do really well considering there’s no proper management. Our room was up to date and clean. The restaurant was lovely also. This is a 2* hotel and for those that are saying it’s poor, maybe book a room at The Ritz next time !!!

jake lane 4 years ago

Negative experience: Avoid at all costs. We were woken up at around 0200 to the sound of rats in the roof and walls. (We took videos to show the staff in the morning) after an extra hour of TRYING to sleep, we tried to leave. The guy at the front desk, although friendly, didn't know how to change our room and said he'd put it in the repairs book, stating this wasn't the first time it had happened. We left, went for a very early breakfast and coffee at McDonald's and slept in the car for a few hours before returning to the hotel at 7 to complain, ask for a refund and explain we wouldn't be staying a second night. The staff were incredibly rude. Said there's no way it could be rodents, and when we explained her colleague had already told us it wasn't the first time we only got a sigh in response. They would not look at the video evidence we had, refused to give us a full refund because we'd "used the room". After an uphill battle we settled for a 50% refund on the nights stay. The only positive part of this hotel is the drive that leads you away from the place. I wouldn't stay here again if you paid me, and I'd advise everyone else to avoid too. There are a lot nicer hotels in the area for the same price!

Positive experience: When I booked this hotel I did not read the rewievs, but I only read it day before out holiday, I was shocked and worried. Now I am happy that I was worried with no reason because hotel was perfect, our room was clean and tidy, staff were helpful, food was very tasty. Yes, is true that hotel needs some updating but apart of that I can not find anything else. The most perfect is location of the hotel. You can see beach from your window.

Gary Redmond 4 years ago

Positive experience: Cheap and fairly cheerful. Room was clean and had all the features you could reasonably expect for the price, and bathroom was modern with a hot powerful shower. Staff were very pleasant. Didn't get to have breakfast as needed to leave too early to attend a local running event. Yes, it's all a bit tired and lacks the service/attention to detail found in more expensive establishments, so if you're easily offended by an empty swimming pool and poorly fitted carpets then it might be worth giving this place a miss.

Negative experience: Absolutely disgusting hotel. The room smelt damp, staff were rude. Considering the lockdowns last year it could of been done up to be a lovely hotel. The outside pool just had muddy water at the bottom, we didn't look at anything else. The hotel is definitely not like the photos you see on line. Needless to say we literally went in the room then came straight out & cancelled our booking. There was no way we would stay there. The staff must be used to this as they couldn't of cared less when I told them. I wouldn't even give them one star. It really needs pulling down & rebuilding .

Negative experience: Disappointed to say the least !!!! One positive, the location is perfect and I am sure at some point in the past this was a stunning hotel however it is a shadow of its former self. The room was dirty and the mattress was like sleeping on concrete. My wife and I took a leap of faith and had a swim in the indoor pool but the water was freezing and we could not use the changing rooms due to the poor state they where in. A real shame as the location alone is picture perfect. I would avoid until this once stunning hotel gets the love and attention it deserves

Fantastic experience: We booked this in July, but only read the reviews the night before we left. Shocked by them, we joked that at least it would be an adventure! I have to urge you to take all poor reviews with a pinch of salt. We had an amazing stay, the staff, though seemingly short-handed & overworked, were welcoming & friendly & our only issue (a fault with the safe) was dealt with immediately. When booking, please bear in mind, this is a unique, historic, listed building. It is a local icon & makes an impressive impact on the skyline. Yes, it is tired, but the kudos of having your building listed comes with a minefield of restrictions on what you can do to it. Our room was clean, & a good size, did not smell damp, nor was there any mildew on the window frames. The Riviera is not a budget hotel, but we knew we had bought a whole experience; a unique building, in the most amazing location- on the beach, close to wonderful cliff walks & regular buses into Weymouth. We ate in the restaurant, the menu was basic & traditional, &, most importantly, unpretentious. It was reasonably priced, generous portions & beautifully cooked & presented. If you think I have been heavy-handed with the superlatives, that's because I can't speak highly enough of the staff, the hotel, the location & the weekend we enjoyed.

Negative experience: Uncomfiest bed I think either of us have had, facilities feel very run down, building feel very run down, local amenities aren't the best unless you have very young kids. All in all priced way above the service provided. Would advise to stay clear untill it gets revamped or refurbished.

Simon Yeo 4 years ago

Negative experience: Reception is chaotic and mostly unmanned. Room preparation and allocation is disorganised and many guests who had arrived at 4pm still were without rooms at 10pm. No management on site or coordenation of staff. Building from the outside looks abandoned and most external areas, such as pool are in a sorry state of neglect. Should not be allowed to operate in this state of mismanagement as it is a total disrespect to guests.

Jo Barry 4 years ago

Negative experience: The lady on reception said the room we had has a sea view ! We booked two double rooms costing £209 ! The view from both rooms I will attach a picture! Can’t post picture our view was a brick wall with extractor fans which were going all night long could hear them even with window shut! The shower door was broken the shower head all chrome cover peeling off , both coffee mugs been used! the second room damp everywhere, indoor pool ope but full of dirt couldn’t be used ! We had all done a hard days work and needed to sleep but couldn’t ! Over priced and don’t think the two rooms we had should even be rented out !!

Fantastic experience: 2 weeks ago I was there with my husband. The room was fantastic we had sea view the breakfast was amazing. The staff were so Friendly. I would go again.

Negative experience: Do not stay here!!! Outdoor pool scruffy, empty with lot's of weeds. strong smell of damp in rooms. There was black mould on window panes and around window recess which had transferred to curtains. Carpet filthy and dirty guest towels. Asked for alternative room but were fully booked. Had no option but to check out and find alternative accommodation HORRIBLE

Fantastic experience: We have had the best weekend meeting up with our northern soul friends. The staff deserve praise and admiration, they worked over 14 hours a day with no management around to support them. They multitasked on reception, bar, cleaning and restaurant for over 80 rooms. The owner should appreciate and respect his staff, they are loyal to the hotel. Thank you and well done. See you next year

Andrew Tolley 4 years ago

Positive experience: The staff very helpful with any request they treat the hotel like there home I would be happy with them as staff for sure they do what they can with what they got to manage there Position. The food in the dining room totally transformed from some previous comments my exspirance of breakfast all very freshly coming all the time and plenty of it I speak as I see it Staff shortage is common in most hospitality

Paul Carter 4 years ago

Positive experience: Although we didn't stay at the hotel as we are local, we attended the Northern Soul weekender 10th to 13th September 2021. If your into the Northern Soul scene i highly recommend you book your tickets for next year February 2022 through the Riviera Hotel or Facebook Weymouth soul club. Great dance floors covering three rooms of Northern Soul. All of the bar staff are know by their fisrt names and very welcoming and friendly. Can't wait to return next February 2022. Thanks Riviera, see you all soon.

Negative experience: Disgusting hotel. Shouldn't be allowed to continue having people there to stay. Room filthy, staff rude and scruffy. Room not cleaned properly when we arrived despite us having to wait nearly 2 hours to check in. Room not cleaned at all during stay, no clean towels, toilet roll, tea/coffee provided during stay. Would advise people to not stay here. The only positive is that the hotel is in a lovely location and the beach is nice. This hotel needs serious refurbishment and a complete review of staff. The cleanliness is the major issue for me. Bathroom very dirty, and mould all around the shower cubicle. Would never stay here again.

Fantastic experience: I loved this hotel! I stayed there because I was doing the Macmillan hike which starts just a few minutes down the road, and I was sceptical after seeing a few bad reviews but I had the BEST stay for the 2 nights I was there. I had a wonderful view of the ocean, and slept to the sounds of the sea, which was just lovely. I had a double room, so clean, all necessary toiletries and towels provided. There was a fridge in the room, which surprised me! Breakfast was so nice and the staff couldn’t do enough to make me feel welcome. They were so friendly and helpful, honestly I cannot praise this hotel enough. Plenty of on-site parking, too. I will absolutely be staying there again. Also, I’d like to recommend the fish and chip shop just 2 minutes from the hotel. Wonderful! Thanks so much to the amazing hotel staff for making my stay so comfortable - exactly what I needed for lots of rest before and after a challenging hike!

Fantastic experience: From the outside building looks old and dated but rooms are modern and in good order, although there's a place reserved in hell for the person who picked the bed bases!! Say goodbye to your shins if you don't watch where your walking!!! Staff are very friendly and helpful and the buffet breakfast was spot on lovely and fresh and hot every day! Will gladly stay again

Negative experience: Absolutely terrible. Rooms-they are not nice like on the pictures so be careful. Hair on the duvet , carpet not even hoovered, dust everywhere… very poor condition of the rooms! Wifi doesn’t work. Sauna and steam room out of order. Not worth any money.

Karen Hatherly 4 years ago

Negative experience: Great location but very dated and noisy. There were stains on the duvet (not the cover) and someone had been smoking in my non smoking room. If you just want a cheap overnight stay it’s fine but I wouldn’t want to stay any longer than that.

Peter Miller 4 years ago

Negative experience: The room was very basic and not very clean it looked tired and needed a lick of paint , also the outside of the building needed painting and updating . We also had issues with the bedside lights that turned on one side of the bed only and both had to be on at the same time you couldn't have just one on . The bed was very hard and we didnt sleep well because of this also there was a gap where you could see daylight around the front door frame .

TUMPA SARKAR 4 years ago

Positive experience: The hotel is very efficiently located and even the infrastructure is good but the staffs in there are very unprofessional. The lady in reception was soo rude behaved like we entered her house when we reached an hour earlier than the check in time even though we had emailed through booking.com about getting there early without getting there response obviously. She could have been more polite instead shouting on as about the timing. Also when we called asking about the swimming pool and sauna said that swimming pool is working and until last day we weren't told that there is pool inside the hotel as we saw one out which was dark green with algea and filth. The hotel placement and location is 10/10 just need some maintenance, hope the new owner will look after it well.

Fantastic experience: What an amazing location. The view from our room over Weymouth was incredible. The building is definitely a little tired in places, but our room was clean, comfy and pretty spacious. Our 2 night stay was really peaceful and despite being fully booked up, we couldn't hear a peep from the other rooms (must be the ultra thick walls from the 1920's). The staff are also ultra friendly and the breakfast was fantastic. Finally it's a great location with Bowleaze Cove and all of its facilities on your doorstep. A great little corner of Weymouth which deserves to be discovered. We'll definitely be back.

Valeria Erdos 4 years ago

Negative experience: The only positive thing is that the beach is close to the hotel. The building should be completely renovated. Breakfast was very simple. Our room was in a separate small building, not even in the hotel.

Emma Patton 4 years ago

Positive experience: Although the Riviera hotel needs an injection of cash and some TLC, it does the job and was good value for money in a lovely position by the beach. The staff are really friendly and the chef couldn't have been more accommodating. Food was great value for money.

Donna Edwards 4 years ago

Negative experience: We visited recently, it was our 3rd time staying at the hotel and we had previously had good rooms, tasty food and a pleasant stay. Unfortunately not this time, our room was at the rear of the hotel, the outside area was full of weeds and rubbish. The room was very basic, to sit down you had to sit on the bed which was harder than the floor, as the carpet looked so filthy I chose not to try the floor, had they given any thought at all to the layout there was room for a chair. The mattress was far too small for the frame which caused bruised legs getting up, and the duvet (if you can call a pile of lumps held together by threadbare fabric) was only fit for the bin. The bath was too deep for me to climb into and there was no safety mat to put in there, due to the position of the shower door being right next to the sink I was unable to use the shower attachment either. The menu looked tempting, I went for a medium rare ribeye which was served overdone with slimy mushrooms and chips, the oil definitely needed to be changed. My husband had a mixed grill and everything was overcooked, there was no point in complaining to the reception staff as they were too busy trying to do their job and that of the housekeeping team too! The only time we saw anyone from housekeeping was as we were leaving after cutting our stay short due to the stress caused by the conditions. The outside of the building is a mess, overgrown with weeds, the pool is filled with green, stagnant water and the outdoor furniture is either broken or so covered in weeds you can't use it. Please do not waste your time or money staying here.

Negative experience: The best thing about the hotel was leaving. I expected quite a bit from the hotel and hoped it would live up to expectations, unfortunately it did not. Firstly, I have to say that the staff were fantastic and very nice. I cannot fault this. However the room I stayed in wasn't nice at all. I had issues with the beds (I stayed in a twin room), one had a stain and the other had a few flies in it. The bed wasn't uncomfortable once I removed the flies. The shower wasn't great either, I was hoping for a power shower but ended up with a dribble that changed temperature frequently. General cleanliness was poor and I left a day early, I wasn't asked why. I think the hotel could be fantastic if it had some money spent on it as the location cannot be faulted but the rooms leave much to be desired.

Negative experience: Just arrived. A Major Shock. Nothing like the pictures !!! Tired & worn out, only a Bulldozer could improve it. The swimming pool looks like a Sewage Treatment Plant. Can't wait to experience the Brrakfast !!!

Michael Cox 4 years ago

Negative experience: What looks like a grand Art Deco building, has been miss sold with a wizard of photography making the rust and rot disappear. Once you arrive you’ll notice the building is crumbling away, with rust on all exposed metal, paint peeling, and a worrying amount of rotting wood trimmings. The reception staff were less than pleasant, with a voice that sounded like she’s smoked 50 a days and as much charm as the tar in her lungs. Very rude when asked if we could check in early, only to return 2 hours after check in to find the majority of our room were not ready. The reception has signs detailing refund policy’s and key replacement of £50 of lost. Clearly people have asked for refund upon arrival. Which we also considered. Many people in reception were very upset with couple and family’s realising they were in a camp for the homeless for their staycation. The rooms at the back are Portakain deck out in average furniture but the buildings looks very unsafe. Rotting and leaking, with sunlight coming through the gaps in the doors, and windows that are letting in the last of their light. Seriously, stay away from this hotel. It’s terrible on every level, mainly the customer service and the condition of the building/rooms. It will be condemned soon, hopefully before they con anyone else into staying here.

Negative experience: This hotel shouldn't even get 1 star... it is unbelievably bad. I've stayed in Thai hostels that give the Riviera a serious run for their money. I'll put it simply, it's a dump, spend a bit more and avoid like the plague.

Julie Bower 4 years ago

Negative experience: Oh dear, where to start, the positives, the staff were outstanding! Especially Tom at breakfast, what a little love. The reception and restaurant were lovely too. Very friendly chef's great food and coffees. Pool indoors was chilly, but clean. But the rooms... oh dear. Did what we wanted but cleaners were non existent. Our room wasn't done at all when we arrived, but the staff sorted it right away. Very Very dilapidated. Needs to be pulled down and rebuilt, the place could be amazing if someone fed some love into it.

Paula Haywood 4 years ago

Negative experience: Omg we hadn’t been away in ages took a small break- was told not to be in before 3pm our room not done how’re mother in laws was done. Un friendly staff not helpful at all - rooms damp, green water in the pool - rooms like a box. Mother in law has COPD which the room made her worse. Cupboards falling apart holes in the carpet. Felt like faulty towers. Awful would not recommend at all reception was unfriendly not a nice atmosphere at all ended up coming home on same day

Phillip Toombs 4 years ago

Negative experience: The staff in the hotel from reception through to the cleaners and restaurant staff including the Chef were friendly and made you feel welcome. However as far as the hotel itself it leaves a lot to be desired. The whole place except maybe reception and the restaurant need a major overhaul and updating. The outside badly needs a repaint. The room we stayed in a twin room with a sea view was in it's current state not worth £109.00. I have stayed in several Premier Inn hotels for £29 a night which puts this hotel to shame. I can only agree with many of the previous reviews which I thought at the time seemed harsh that this hotel needs management to get to grips with making this fantastic situated hotel a place that reflects the value for money that they are charging. If you are looking for luxury and high standards then this is not the hotel for you and if you do decide to visit you will be disappointed. At the very best this hotel is okay for an overnight stay. There is much more I could say but I think this has already been covered in many of the previous reviews.

Steve Burt 4 years ago

Positive experience: Ok yes there is a few bad reviews on this hotel but it doesn't affect your stay there the bed takes a night or two to get used to it and places where maintenance is needed. Staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast is excellent so I Will probably be back next year.

Laura Prosser 4 years ago

Negative experience: I'm so sorry for this review. The building is extremely tired. The first room we had was so small, and looking over a small storage area, that was grubby. The pool was nice but too cold. Thankfully Sue on the reception was very accommodating, and she is very nice, moved us to a front facing view, which was much nicer. Alas, as much as I was impressed with the amount of breakfast you get. (Nobody needs that much by the way) but the bacon was still pale, and the mushrooms straight from a can. This put me off, so only had breakfast on day 1. Its such a shame, because it is quite a beautiful Art deco styled hotel, that was originally a pontins, and I know its for sale, but it will need lots of work to it. Who ever buys it, please keep Sue and the lovely two lady cleaners.

Fantastic experience: The hotel is quality, looks ghetto and has character. For a 2 star it was exceptional, room was clean and modern. Very spacious, parking on site is brilliant. The staff were great and very helpful, even let me check in before the time as my room was ready. The views from the hotel are incredible, it has a private beach just a couple minutes walk away.

Tica Larisa 4 years ago

Positive experience: The location is amazing, so is the view. I know it’s a hotel build in 1930 but needs a refurbishment and i hope whoever buys this hotel is gonna make the most of it. We stayed for one night witch was fine but wouldn’t stay more. It was comfortable and decent but the rooms need a very good and deep clean. Staff was very nice. I read a lot of reviews before booking, most of them were bad but decided to still give it a try. I wasn’t completely disappointed but it was good to know what to expect.

Neil Wilson 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: Just came back home from a 4 night fantastic stay at the riviera. I know people have slated this place for it being old and needing work but the truth is that yes it might need work but the rooms are clean and modern with a comfy bed and the staff can’t do enough for you . The food is the best you will get in Weymouth . The breakfast is massive and beautifully cooked and if you choose to eat dinner at the riviera the food is all fresh homemade food . Please ignore any bad reviews about this hotel and give it a go . You will not be disappointed

Negative experience: 1. Rotting window frames 2. Rusty radiators. 3. Tiny room. 4. Bed more like futon, very low. 5. Loo roll like sandpaper. 6. Staff very pleasant.

Negative experience: Rooms smell of damp so bad you can smell it on your clothes next day.It is really unhealthy to sleep in such a condition.Swimming pool water is green looks like it hasn't been cleaned for a years.Everywhere inside leaks on the ceiling and mould in the bathroom. I do not reccomend this hotel to anyone .Only one positive thing is the location

Geoff Spencer 4 years ago

Negative experience: On arrival we noticed a large gathering of guest waiting to check in and the reception was completely full of guests. There were three receptionist dealing with multiple complaints, the receptionist did not wear face masks and there were no COVID screens, no track and trace or hand sanitiser. We did get to see our room that apparently was cleaned but clearly not, it as disgraceful in fact the whole hotel was. There was more guests leaving than staying in fact the complaints were so bad the receptionist was showing us how to cancel. We booked through booking.com and never again there clearly don’t carry out research on the hostels they advertise. PLEASE DONT USE THIS HOLTEL I cannot stress this enough.

Rebecca Wood 4 years ago

Positive experience: Absolutely beautiful setting, views stunning and staff really friendly and couldn't do enough for you despite the owners complete disregard or respect for staff and the history of the hotel. Hope council step in and keep this as the beautiful hotel it deserves to be.

Sandra Brown 4 years ago

Positive experience: Absolutely loved staying here. Rooms were modern & newly refurbished. Staff polite & friendly. Views were lovely. All rooms were like a motel, individual doors straight to the outside, ground & first floor but with a lift. Reception, Dining & Bar area in the middle of the hotel. There is a Gym & Spa but not in use whilst we were there due to covid restrictions. Outside of hotel was badly in need of a paint but it is Grade 2 listed & therefore needs specialist paint etc. Outside pools could have been covered as not in use but not emptied, so therefore very dirty. But these were minor points. The Views, Staff & sound of the Sea at night, far outweighed these

TheDrews11 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: Nice little room with large double bed nice little bathroom with shower shame the outdoor pool is closed would come back again. if I had to pick a fault it would be it could benefit a lick of paint cut the grass and open the outdoor pool other wise it's a nice place in a nice location

Steve 4 years ago

Negative experience: Hotel in poor state outside, outdoor pool closed filled with green water, indoor pool freeing, bar closed in the day, room with a sea view that you couldn't see due to mottled window. On the plus side staff friendly, room clean, and breakfast not bad.
