Basingstoke Country Hotel: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Great hotel, staff very helpful and room perfect. Used gym whilst staying and good value, plenty of equipment and no waiting
Negative experience: Had to meet a client for a meeting, should have done more research. Not a great place.
Negative experience: I can’t rate the rooms and service as I didn’t use them. My low rating is because of the tacky multi coloured appearance and the strong smell of cannabis in the front car park which speaks to this hotel’s clientele or it could be the hotel gym?
Fantastic experience: what a really nice place to stay, receptionist was a friendly and welcoming, room was lovely xx
Positive experience: Low mark due to being refurbished. I think once it's done it would be a nice place to stay . Lovely area to walk with a gym and swimming plus a steam room .
Positive experience: It's a Britannia hotel, but that said it's better than others I've stayed at. It's a bit tired sure but had a comfy bed and a good shower. Would stay again, unlike other Britannias
Negative experience: Disgusting place to stay, made a reservation online and had email confirmation. Drove 220 miles to check in and was told they had over booked and there was nothing they could do. They offered a couple of alcoholic drinks as compensation but I refused as I was driving. coincidentally they had 2 Coach parties turn up on check in day, I previously had issues trying to book a reservation in the restaurant, and was told I was unable to do so in case they had a coach party turn up as they would prioritize them first. Like I started off by saying.... disgusting place to stay. Much nicer hotels in the area do not waste your money here.
Positive experience: Staff are great; pleasant, helpful and friendly. Standard Britannia hotel: some odd and noisy guests. Extra fees for WiFi and use of the gym are unfair/unwarranted. The TVs in 3 different rooms were all unusable. Breakfast is decent. I enjoyed my stay mainly due to the staff who are a credit to the establishment.
Positive experience: Probably this was a nice hotel about 50 years ago. Now you can see that it needs investment. Would make a nice hotel with a proper investment, as it's a big place in a nice location.
Positive experience: Stayed and had a single room. Very small and cold. No heating on, a fire was provided in the room which was adequate over it has managed to hear the room up. Service was good, nice bar area and food.
Negative experience: Went for your Halloween afternoon tea on Sunday. We had 18 of us booked there . When we arrived, u had tables for 2, 4, 6, 8 in a corner! Theres 18 of us n 1 bday girl! U cud have moved n joined the tables together! So we had to join all the tables together ourselves!! Went there last year just 2 of us n it was so fabulous from decorations, to welcome posessco drinks, n dry ice creating the errie Halloween effect, n Halloween inspired cakes n sandwiches n even lovely pick n mix Halloween trolley. Cos we had such a great experience last year, we decided to help promote the hotel Halloween afternoon tea to our friends afterthe manager asked us to put tge words out! WHAT A LET DOWN this year! Decoration was only minimal! The sandwiches were crap. Jus pesto, cucumber n ham, n cheese sandwiches. Surely adding tuna sandwiches n egg sandwiches wudnt cost too much!! Not even asking for salmon sandwiches!! The cakes were only ordinary. I didnt even have any. Nothing Halloween inspired. Just prop a few wiggly sweets on top of cakes! Really! Worst is 1 waitress only to serve 18 of us, n at other corner another 2 tables who came for Sunday roast. Totally let down. I asked for peppermint tea n after 2 hours still got none. Gave up!! Sometimes we truly want to help support our local hotel restaurant, but instead of keeping up the standard provided, it gone downhill!! We were truly embarrassed cos we raved so much to our friends abt how good it was 2023 Halloween high tea! For me , eating just 3 slices of yr sandwiches n none of the cakes n none of the scones, n none of the tea i want is a tad pricey! (1 saving grace, the mushrooms quiche was nice) . Worst is my friend rang up 3x to double tripple check that it wud be like last year, n yr staff assured her it wud be, b4 she booked her bday celebrationat yr Halloween event. . Well it wasnt!!
Fantastic experience: Went for a wedding! Lovely location and the food was amazing! Beef Wellington was perfect! Beautiful spots for wedding pictures and reception
Positive experience: This is a lovely hotel in Windsor. It has several rooms, 2 gardens inside and one large garden area outside. The hotel is in need to some upgrades, fresh paint, fixtures and fittings fixed or replaced. However the rooms are cleaned to a high standard, which is a big plus in my books. It offers tea & coffee in your room, should you wish it. The beds can be singles or doubles depending on who is staying, we had singles. The beds are super comfortable, perfect for a good night's sleep. However some assessories such as the pool table in the recreation room needs replaced, that was disappointing. The staff were helpful & professional. When we arrived there was a bit of a mix up about kids attending so there was no kids food such as pizza, nuggets etc it was more rice, pasta, etc catered more for an adults pallet, however when the staff were informed of this they proceeded to efficiently correct it & the children enjoyed their meals. I was very impressed with how the staff pulled together to include the children they did an amazing job. The gardens are beautiful, very relaxing. There is a bar, restaurant (buffet), gym, pool at your disposal. This is the perfect hotel for couples, children, meetings, or singles who need some quiet. It was a most enjoyable experience. X
Negative experience: I am not in the habit of leaving one star reviews but this was one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. The room we paid for was dirty, outdated and most of the fittings were broken. When we returned to the hotel after a day out there was a wedding reception taking place. Our room was directly above the reception and you could feel the music shaking the floor - Cotton Eye Joe with the bass turned to 11 apparently. At no point where we made aware that we would have a room directly above a wedding reception. We couldn't sleep and so went down to reception to ask about moving rooms. One staff member was particularly unhelpful, also saying that "there was a sign saying there was a wedding", however at no point during check-in was our attention drawn to the sign or verbally told about the wedding. After much back and forth we were moved to another room which was quite pleasant. However, after all the rigmarole we would not come back here, nor recommend anyone to stay here.
Positive experience: Quite a beautiful hotel I can see why people want to get married there. The rooms are a little dated but they are currently under construction so I can imagine that will change. Lovely woods to have a walk through right next to the hotel and the price for a room is quite reasonable. Bed was very comfortable and the amenities where excellent.
Fantastic experience: Paid for 2 x dinner as it clearly says on the web site dinner is served until 9.30..got there at 9.00 and receptionist said it finished at 9.00. Asked nicely for a refund and explained a out the web site and he totally ignored me and said that it can not.be refunded. Such a shame as its.perfect for our staff and contractors to stay when working local. I would not book this again on principal.
Negative experience: Rooms were probably luxury 20 years ago, but now just scream tired. Beds are creaky and furnishings are dated. Bathrooms are also tired with patched caulking etc. Very noisy rooms as they appear to be immediately above the event space for weddings and birthdays etc. The bed headboard is shaking with the bass from the music as I type this. As somewhere to sleep, it does the job (once the party music finishes downstairs) But not an appealing destination in itself.
Negative experience: Myself and several members of my family stayed at the Basingstoke Country Hotel on 3rd June as part of my wedding celebrations. I had booked to stay for 2 nights so that I could get ready on the morning of our wedding, along with my bridal party, and then with my new husband for our wedding night. What a massive mistake that was. Arriving at the hotel, the exterior is beautiful. However, once you step inside, the interior is shabby and damaged. Definitely not worthy of 4* status. The lift is horrific, to the point we avoided using it as it didn't feel safe when doing so. There were multiple areas with general damage, as well as damp and water damage. The restaurant was somewhat of a let down on the first night there. The cutlery was dirty and the waitress only took half our group's dinner order. She then got funny with me when I called her back so that the rest of us could also place our orders. The food was cold, and again, the interior left a lot to be desired. Our room (301) was awful. Outdated decor, hardly any plug sockets, damage to sockets and the bathroom sink, as well as the ceiling around the air conditioning vent being cracked and sagging. It wasn't until we started using the air conditioning that we realised that there was clearly water leaking into the ceiling. Being woken up in the early hours of the morning by the sound of constant dripping onto the floor was not ideal. It took multiple complaints and for my seamstress to go and insist the manager came to deal with the situation for them to realise that it wasn't safe for us to be in the room due to health and safety, and insisting on moving us to another room, half way through my bridal prep. Moving all of my belongings and not being able to just sit and enjoy my wedding morning was just not acceptable. When told this, the manager kept just repeating that they hadn't been made aware I was there for my wedding. Which is absolute rubbish as I have the booking confirmation email, which very clearly states we were staying there for our wedding. The new room (304) was a fabulous size but the towel rail in the bathroom was broken (fixings just left on the wall with no rail) and the plug wouldn't pop open in the sink so we couldn't use it. We also had to ask multiple times for an extra chair to be brought to the (original) room so that my bridesmaids had somewhere to sit to have their hair and make-up done. Room service is not an option at the hotel but due to the circumstances of our stay (the circumstances they repeatedly claimed they weren't aware of), I was told it would be allowed since breakfast in the restaurant didn't start until 8am and I had my hair and make-up people coming at 7:30. Breakfast didn't show up so one of my wedding party had to phone down and ask if it was actually being brought up. She was told it had been taken to the bride already, as they (again) didn't seem to be aware that as well as the in-house wedding they had going on, I was also staying there for my wedding as well. Eventually food got brought up and, one of the few saving graces of the morning, tasted amazing. We were, however, only given 1 of the 2 breakfasts we had paid for. There were additional problems with rooms my family members were staying in. Ants in one, no extra bed put in another, half the key cards didn't work, and more damage throughout. Not once was there an apology about how poorly we were treated. Only excuses about how they didn't know there was another bride staying there. As if it would be ok for a "normal" guest to have all these issues. The only positives were that the shower pressure was amazing (at least in room 301, I didn't hang around long enough to try the shower in room 304) and the food at breakfast was delicious. What should have been a magical stay, preparing for our wedding (that had already been postponed twice due to COVID), was quite the opposite. Edit: It has now been nearly 2 years & despite numerous attempts to speak to the hotel directly & then Brittania Hotels head office to lodge my complaint, I never got any response.
Fantastic experience: Although a little dated in places our room was nice and clean and the food was good with great staff which were very polite and helpful
Fantastic experience: Great value, comfy rooms. £4 to use the gym, decent size pool and sauna. Will be back
Positive experience: Stayed here for a couple of nights, only for the room, The receptionist was polite and friendly when checked in. Hotel looked clean and tidy, Room I had was clean and big, plenty of parking spaces, only downside was that the fan in the bathroom was on permanently so had to keep bathroom door closed also no free WiFi in rooms it costs £7 a day which I think is way too expensive but free in communal areas.
Positive experience: Good hotel with pretty much everything you'd want staff are very pleasant and kind. Always come back every month.
Positive experience: Clean, but needs a lick of paint. The swimming pool was warm, but not all cubicles had locks and were extremely squeaky! Also, you have to pay £4 per person to use! Staff friendly though and close to town if you drive.
Negative experience: Absolute joke. Had to move rooms twice. Radiator stuck on in one room. Radiator stuck on and so noisy in the second. Curtains don't fit the windows in ANY of the rooms. Shower broken in the third. Dog not allowed in breakfast room so had to eat what i was given rather than what i wanted in the dark bar. Staff barely speak English. could not make them understand I wanted a refund. Still waiting to hear back from customer service............just don't bother
Positive experience: Use for gym only, very slowly being updated (took 18 months+ to fix gym aircon), cheap and functional. Pool is smaller but still good and popular. Do not expect David Lloyd luxury.
Negative experience: Would give no stars but unable to. Brought as a gift through Groupon. Contacted the hotel on their number given to book a room. On arrival a few weeks later I was told we would have to pay again as they were in dispute with Groupon. No help or advice given from staff/management. We were left high and dry.Had to return home without our night away. Very poor customer care, definitely as we had done nothing wrong!
Negative experience: Me and my husband went to this hotel for Valentines as we got told it was the best hotel to go to was cheap for one night when we first got into the room, it looked very nice. The room was very large. The bed was very comfortable. The only downside was the heat was on full blast. It was too hot in the room. The air-conditioning did not work, so we complained to one of the staff members and asked for a fan, but he couldn’t give us one. It just got very uncomfortable, so we asked if there was anything else that he could do he changed our rooms. The room was too small. It was like being in a rabbit hutch. It was absolutely freezing. It was like sitting in the fridge. The room wasn’t very well cleaned the heating in that room did not work at all the carpet had been cut you couldn’t see the TV from the bed. You have to rearrange the room so we could see the TV. The bed was too small, he was both led on the edge of the bed but still touching. We was frightened to move just in case we fell off the bed so we left to come home. We arrived at the hotel at 6:30 pm and we left the hotel at 1:45 am just didn’t feel comfortable at all will definitely not be returning back to the hotel
Positive experience: This is a difficult review to write. Certain aspects are good, others less so. Front of house staff were great, food was good and reasonably priced and the room and public areas were clean. However certain aspects of building maintenance need more attention. There are loose treads on the stairs which is a big safety issue, the window in my room was broken and letting in a draught and the towel rail was so badly installed it kept dropping the towels on the floor. As Brittania Hotels go its pretty good and I would stop there again if working in the area.
Positive experience: Room and meal we're ok but the service was poor. Staff clearly need training in basic service and a few of them in what is presentable attire. Breakfast however was disappointing, eggs were cold and there was no bacon or orange juice.
Positive experience: Great value for money. A 3 course meal for £15 and it was very good too. Breakfast was hearty. The room was a little tired but it was clean and comfortable and the only reason for the 4 stars. The staff are outstanding. Would absolutely stay here again.
Fantastic experience: This is a proper, full of old world charm, country house hotel. I don't know how many stars they have but all of the staff are stars. I judge a hotel by comfort, cleanliness and feeling welcome. If the food is good too, I am more than happy. I am in the hotel business and quite hypercritical. This was one of the best hotel experiences ever. I would recommend this place, to people whom I wish to impress. What they do, they do excellently.
Negative experience: Ideally priced if all that you want is a room but don't bank on any hot water in the morning would recommend that you eat before you book in (like fish and chips) from the chippy in the village but must be said a nice bar area
Positive experience: Very pleasantly surprised. Had a lovely room overlooking the courtyard. Staff are very friendly and accommodating. A hidden gem. They are going through a refurbishment on the rooms and don't warrant the bad reviews they get. Would definitely stay again.
Fantastic experience: I stayed in this hotel a few years ago but I really enjoyed it here and I would come here again, the staff were lovely and pretty friendly. The room I stayed in was really clean and I slept very well the bed was really comfortable. The only thing I really want to see improvement on is the sad state of the swimming pool area which was pretty dirty. If you could do this then that would be amazing a major clean would be amazing to see here to. But apart from me knocking off 1 star ⭐ it's still a great place to stay.
Fantastic experience: This was a lovely hotel. I have just recently been staying there through a bus tour company. Staff were lovely although it very many of them. We stayed x3 nights and as far as I know no one on the tour ever had their bed made and not even one change of towels. Food varied but on Saturday evening was not so good at all. Not on any of the evenings in the Restaurant did I actually know what the food was apart from things that were obvious like chicken, fish and vegetables . I found it very disappointing. I would however definitely give top marks for the fish , I hadn’t a clue what it was It it was cooked to perfection and tasted lovely. Hotel is in beautiful location and the staff were friendly but under a lot of pressure I would guess because of understaffing for whatever the reason.
Positive experience: A beautiful and stunning place in beautiful surroundings and gardens, what let the Hotel/Spa down was the maintaine, my room was overlooking the pool with a broken window lock, one curtain was hanging by the threads, headboard broken, broken towel rail in bathroom, such a shame as I could see good qualities in the place, staff was immaculate, polite and couldn't do enough for you.. Rooms where clean with plenty of drinks facilities. My review wouldn't stop me from staying again, but please be aware of maintenance duties, maybe emply a maintenance worker.
Negative experience: I was told this was a great hotel. Expect it could be but like a lot of Brittania hotels it needs a face lift. The concierge who books you in always looks at breaking point. He never greets you, everything is met with a heavy sigh. He is either overworked or stressed and needs support. I never see anyone else other than bar staff other than two or three security guards who sstare at you whilst sat on a wall seat bench at the furthest point o the lobby, again intimidating, no greeting just talking amongst themselves, but staring at guest checking in. Haven't used bar or restaurant as it's intimidating with all male customers watching sports and drinking heavily. Lone female traveller and food choice is limited to burger or fried food. Can't get anywhere without a vehicle, local Tesco a 10min drive. Placed somewhat in-accessibly without a car. Going to try a local bistro pub next time I stay for work.
Positive experience: We have stayed here twice now, and have enjoyed both. The hotel seems to get modest reviews, but my experience has been positive, so I have awarded 4 stars overall. The service is excellent. Receptionists 10/10 across the board. I have not eaten yet, but I had a pleasant hour in one of the garden areas enjoying a couple of beers. I suppose the bathroom fittings have been a little on the antique side, but that suits me, a bit of individuality and quaintness. Beds good, very good quality pillows, sheets etc. Will definitely return
Negative experience: Very much in need of renovation. Dust everywhere, most of equipment is broken like hot tub. Can not be call SPA hotel as not existing. Just old hotel 3* it is maximum.
Fantastic experience: This is a lovely place in a lovely setting. The staff are very kind and helpful. I was traveling with my dog and so I spent most of my time in the pub, and Kevin was so friendly and made our stay very enjoyable.
Fantastic experience: Nice place to stay on the way from London to Wales … nomen omen I have not been here for years and now everything seems familiar… small village Hook just ten minutes walk from the hotel …for shopping and very Good Fish and Chips just beside Tesco shop
Fantastic experience: Just outside of Basingstoke, fairly priced, clean rooms, good breakfast, extraordinary friendly staff, especially Roy at the breakfast service is a doll! I'm not sure if room acess to the free WiFi needs to cost £7 in 2023 but as I didn't need it, I won't complain.
Positive experience: Place needs a little TLC regarding the decore. We had a budget room, but could not fault it. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced, as was the bar, although the range of drinks on offer was limited. We will be using this place again in the future. Thanks to the friendly and helpful team for a nice stay.
Fantastic experience: Honestly I am surprised by so many negative reviews. I got early to the hotel before check in time at 4pm. While I was drinking coffee the room got ready within 15 mins. The hospitality of the personal was great, especially from Kate in the restaurant. Her service was outstanding. It’s been a while since I’ve felt so welcomed into a place. Thank you Kate!
Positive experience: Could be a nice hotel and is obviously having some refurbishment. More attention needed I.e that bedding actually fits the beds (sheets didn't fit and a quilt under the base sheet, the quiltonly just fit the bed side to side so wrong size quilt on double bed) and more than 1 bottle of water and 1 small pack of biscuits in a room booked for 2 people and no decaff tea provided
Positive experience: Overnight stay with a dog. Friendly staff. Safe feeling. Large warm room. Ground floor made emptying car easy. Didn't use gymn facilities but looked impressive. Four minutes easy drive off the M3. Breakfast was generous and adequate. Definitely stay again.
Positive experience: Great Driver Dave, was Very Pleasant and so Helpful. The Facilities where Brilliant, and So where The Staff. They went Above and Beyond to Accommodate. The Rooms where Warm,Clean and Comfortable. I Thouroughlly Would Like to Thank The Driver and All the Staff for Making my Christmas and New Year A Great One. The Entertainment put on Everynight was Brilliant Too. I would Highlly Recommend This Cosy Hotel for a Pleasant Satifying, Food Great and The Hard Work put in by all the Staff. Thankyou Again Rosemarie McClymont
Negative experience: Worst hotel I've ever stayed at. Had to change rooms as the first one smelt like someone had died in there. The guy on reception didn't seem at all surprised when I requested a room changed He "Upgraded" me to an "executive suite" which had sky light windows , one had a blind the other didn't so waking up to a bright room wasn't very nice. The room was actually quite hot but the Aircon didn't work. Needless to say, I won't be returning!
Positive experience: Hi Ryan and joe here, bricklayers from London doing a new build around the corner from the hotel. Stayed at the hotel on and off for 2 months. Was an experience that I’ll never forget, the rooms wasn’t always up to the expectations you’d hope but the receptionist were always accommodating to your needs and willing to help. The spa and fitness area were miles above the the hotel, quite gym with friendly receptionist always pushing you to buy the protein drink and willing you into the the steam and sauna which are up there with the best I’ve been too. Now to the bar and food area, often builders, working in the area controlling the domain but thankfully for the funny, kind and sometimes strange bar tending of Will made our experience very enjoyable and something myself and my brother will never forget. He made a bland hotel somewhere I’d like to revisit. So Will, I hope you see this and continue to be the funny, sarcastic and individual character you are.( we love you)Lastly I’ll always remember my time spent here as happy and memorable and I thank all the staff for that God bless
Positive experience: We booked the Valentines Day package including an overnight stay on 14th February 2023. Its fair to say that we experienced some difficulty with making the booking due, we were told to staff sickness. However, we decided to proceed with the booking and we are very glad that we did. The Valentines Dinner menu looked very good and the food proved to be as good as we hoped, despite further issues with our booking the Head Chef & Restaurant Supervisor, and indeed all the staff we encountered at reception and in the Bar were fantastic the food was excellent, it was beautifully presented, plates were hot and the service was great. All the team including the hotel maintenance team manager made sure we enjoyed our evening, they are a credit to the hotel. We had a really nice stay and would like to thank the staff who looked after us so well.
Positive experience: Shocking customer service at reception upon arrival, got better as the weekend proceeded. Gym and restaurant staff very good. Minimal information given as a result missed breakfast
Positive experience: It's missing vital simple components like a decent, even half interested welcome and basic hotel information on check-in. No info leaflets about opening times of restaurant etc in the room and you have to pay for WiFi and use of the gym/spa facilities as these are 'premium services'. In 2023 WiFi should not be charged. The gym/spa whilst being charged for did not have all facilities available. On the upside, the staff were as helpful as they could be almost across the board, especially in the gym and kitchen/restaurant. Could be way better than it is but I would consider giving it another go as it's quite a lovely location for walks. A v generous 3/5
Positive experience: Perfect for a quick budget overnight stay. I paid £49 for a pleasant comfortable room, extremely good value. A bit chintzy and dated, bathroom had seen better days but it was fine. It can be a bit noisy so be warned. If you want luxury this is not the place for you, head to Tylney Hall up the road. But I have no complaints given the ridiculously cheap price!
Positive experience: Can't believe all the negative reviews had upgraded our room for a very reasonable price. Staff are fantastic and can not do enough to help. Ate in the bar last night good food and great value. Breakfast this morning varied choices of hot and cold
Fantastic experience: Very friendly and professional staff who went out of their way to make sure we had a first class Christmas and stay, the rooms were very clean and tidy with everything you needed for a restful time, the meals are excellent and the self service trays are always being changed so you are always get fresh food, we have spent the last five Christmas at this hotel and every year they've found away to improve on the year before,we will be booking again for next Christmas
Negative experience: Only stay here as a last resort! The rooms are ridiculously cold. I would of been warmer sleeping in a kennel. Small electric heater in the room didn't work either. I ended up sleeping in my clothes. Don't bother with the breakfast. Ivd had a better breakfast in hospital.
Negative experience: The room was absolutely freezing!!! A small electric heater was supplied but didn't work. I wouldn't feed the breakfast to a dog. Cold hash browns, undercooked bacon. Ropey cheep sausages. I won't be staying here again.
Positive experience: It was fine. There's a lot of negative reviews but I had a good night's sleep and that's very important. I ordered a dominoes and had a fast delivery, easy going hotel allows you to eat a take away in your room. My room had a double bed, tables and chairs, TV, clean bathroom I was impressed for the money. Teas coffee water. Yes it's a little dated but it still functions extremely well.
Negative experience: Don't stay here, it's awful. The room was freezing as the radiator was not working and the window broken. The air conditioning just flashed a spanner at me so I asked for an extra blanket at reception but none came so I had to pile the towels on the bed to keep warm. Thought a bath would warm me up but couldn't get any water from the taps and only cold water from the sink but that had no plug. The hallway stank of weed and the breakfast buffet was well below average.
Fantastic experience: We booked the woodland suite for my mums wake. The room was set up beautifully plenty of seating. We had a buffet all the guests complimented the food was great and plenty of it. Thank you to RIchard (manager), Sam and all the staff that made our day run smoothly.
Fantastic experience: After reading bad reviews online , I would like to sing absolute praise for this hotel and give credit where credit is due . what they done for me my family where we held my mums wake . The function room was clean tidy and set up as discussed, they allowed us to put flowers and personal touch etc . We met with the manager Richard and discussed what we would like and he was so accommodating . The food was a buffet and was outstanding quality lots of choice and LOTS of it we had 120 + people and there was plenty of it . The staff on our private bar and serving the buffet was so professional and friendly . Would deffo recommend this hotel for large numbers
Negative experience: DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! Greeted by a receptionist that was highly rude, room was extremely dirty, corridors looked like they had not been cleaned/hoovered for months with food on the floor outside my room door. Internal door leading to the rooms had been covered up with plaster board; looked like the door was smashed! very concerning. Loads of refugees taken in, kids were noisy and unruly. Staff turned a blind eye to their behaviour. There was banging on my door in the middle of the night. Falsely advised as there is no spa treatments at the hotel. Felt like I was staying at a refugee camp. If I had a choice I wouldn’t even give this hotel one star.
Negative experience: If you can stay somewhere else, do so. In the past, I started better a lot. Back then it was, I felt, expensive but had a certain quality. Now it is neither expensive nor of a good standard. We arrived to find out rooms weren't ready. The chap on reception it turned out would have to make up our rooms, so he offered for us to share a room. No. We were filled to wait in the bar for three rooms to be ready. We did. 45 minutes later our rooms were ready. To be fair to the chap he was trying his best. He should never have been out in that position. The rooms are super hot and support uncomfortable. Posts suggesting that the hotel is tired are being complementary. Breakfast? Sausage roll anyone?
Fantastic experience: Beautiful! Beautiful!! Beautiful!!! Tucked away at the road side in Basingstoke, doesn't look like much from the outside but is amazing when you get in. You know how they say to never judge a book by its cover? It is a Nice weekend get away for the kids. They actually could play on the grounds and run around. The staff were so helpful and so polite. Always smiling.... Good people! I was there for the weekend- for a Christian women programme and it was a beautiful place. Rooms are good sized and clean. Lots of tea and coffee. The linen were clean and smelt really fresh! The bathrooms were clean and shiny. The food was hot and fresh. Lots of free tea and coffee in the halls. There was a gym, pool and sauna on site which my friend and I enjoyed. The pool was warmed so was lovely to swim in. Room for improvement? Each room had a mobile heater but I was still a little cold at night. I guess it's too early for central heating to be turned on. There are quite a lot of stairs and corridors so, for people with bad knees, it might be worth asking for a room where you do not have to climb loads of stairs. Overall, I still give 5 stars because it was an absolutely amazing experienc3. I would be back with my family some day!
Negative experience: Despite arriving at the hotel and asking the reception to make a reasonable adjustment for me by emptying my bin on a daily bases due to living with a stoma. This was not done and after repeating the request to make reasonable adjustments this was still not achieved. I ended up empty the bin from my room by myself. The reason adjustments required come under the equalities act 2010. I requested the manager of the hotel to make contact with me throughout my stay. I was told by reception that the manager was not in and would contact me by Tuesday 27/09/22. Still no call from the manager of this hotel. The services in the hotel was poor, table service. What table services? There is also clearly a large family living or boarding there too. Reception staff seemed unconcerned of the issues raised and to top it all the key cards lock you out your room every day. Not a great experience at all. I tried contact the head office with no luck too.
Negative experience: Not impressed with this hotel . Strange set up - lots of children running around and riding scooters around corridors, appears families are living in hotel. ‘Security’ men sitting around all the time in every corner - quite scary and intimidating. Receptionist very unfriendly and unhelpful. Stayed in a twin bedded room - bathroom smelt of urine, shower didn’t work, not particularly clean , rubbish under bed. Furniture was old and damaged, nets ripped, bedside lights faulty. Room in dire need of repair - especially bathroom. Whole hotel in disrepair. Breakfast disappointing - mushrooms, eggs, bacon and sausages were cold. Room cost £90 so not so cheap!
Negative experience: This hotel from outside looks amazing. It advertises an on site gym and pool and a relaxing stay. The reality is the pool is £4 per person, and the gym has a cost as well, rather than being free for hotel guests. The hotel is very, very dated in terms of decoration. The walls of the room have terrible paint touch ups, the bathroom was hugely damaged, panels broken, stains on the floor, a mirror light that flickered every second, the light in the corridor clicking on and off every second.
Positive experience: Staff no friendly, i had a luck because our bedroom was recently refurbished but the A/C wasn't cooling I had to £4 for the swimming pool i thought I can spend there all day working with my phone and my laptop, but the guy told me is not allowed I just be there for 20 minutes. The food was delicious but honestly the staff looked like so unfriendly.
Negative experience: If I could give minus I would. Walked in and greeted by reception staff . We'll achnolaged was probably a better phrase. He went on to burp and make sexist comments. Informed us pool was out of use as they found glass in it. Was no help finding our room. As we walked through struggling to find the room we walked past endless piles of dirty laundry outside rooms. All that could be heard was screaming from rooms. Children just running about. Got into the room and it looked like a prison cell. No window no air conditioning broken items and just vile. We went straight to reception to request another room to be told fully booked. Upon looking at site it showed multiple rooms. Upon showing this to reception all of a sudden a room was available. Quickly after entering the new room we walked back out and ask for a refund. Its filthy. The staff are rude and don't have any management to rely on. Manager was ment to call us that evening and two weeks later still nothing. AVOID
Negative experience: On arrival the reception area windows are full of dirt and cobwebs . Staff need new uniforms as look like the white shirts have been washed with darks. When we were eventually booked in we were put right at the back of the hotel this was very dirty and dated. Carpets not clean and runners not mopped very stained. The room lampshades were falling apart as old and brittle. Fitting falling off in the bathroom and only warm water from the shower. Tv only one battery in the remote so unable to use. Went to call reception but phone is not working only there for show. Put additional sheets on the bed before sleeping as the mattress was so stained. In the night was woken up to teenagers running around the carpark fighting swearing and throwing plastic chairs between people's cars. Breakfast was just a cup of tea and the bread was stale croissants hard and the cooked breakfast was luke warm. Would not stay again. The pool was having work done but this was not mentioned on booking either so unable to have a morning swim which was the only reason I picked this hotel
Fantastic experience: Good service given.Food OK. Clean bedrooms.Needs money spent on it. Had a comfortable stay.Menu could be more interesting. Leasure centre looks OK,did not use it.pool OK.
Negative experience: Another low ball review! I really don't like doing these, but here we go.. Room: The room was pretty good. Sadly the air conditioning reminded me of a Cessna trying to start up with the noise it was making, so had to resort to having a fan on constantly. Otherwise it wasn't too bad. There's plenty of damage to walls, corridors, lack of decent repairs to prior issues and a massive gap between the bath and beauty panel where someone fitted the wrong size and couldn't be bothered. Service: Here's where it gets a little funny. The barman was by far the best experience of this visit. Otherwise staff seemed a little rude and standoffish. We did attempt to use the pool, but the guy running the "Spa" just wanted to tell us it was £4 each rather than listening to what we were saying. Needless to say, we didn't use the pool.. Due to the restaurant seemingly only serving people that seemed like permanent residents there, we went to the pub just a 4 minute walk down the road for a few pints, followed up by a pizza from Domino's across the road. Location: Ideally located on the A30 just oustside Hook, the position is good for getting in to Basingstoke and other surrounding towns and cities. All in all, I can't honestly recommend the place as somewhere I'd want to go to. It seems more like a stopover for workmen and a hostel for families rather than a hotel. I can't say that I was overly impressed with what I spent to feel unwelcome and to deal with kids riding bikes up and down the hallways.
Negative experience: Terrible hotel. NO WINDOWS IN ROOMS! extremely suffocating and claustrophobic. no proper working fan or AC provided despite being requested in 30 degree heat! slept underneath cracked ceiling light glass! everything you touch had dust or broke, broken shower and clogged sink. when reception approached no care given, nothing can be done despite the huge safety hazards and told to just post picture online! No maintenance, no housekeeping, have to pay to use pool if it is open. Just avoid at all costs.
Negative experience: Really do not book.. not even worth the one star..absolutely shocking. No hot water for a shower, Air Con not working, windows broken, desk in room falling apart, Bath filthy dirty with mould and the brass fittings looked like they were fitted 500years ago. No room service to replace toilet role or make the bed etc..didnt even touch the kettle or the TV remote..
Negative experience: Floor was softer then the bed, whole in bathroom ceiling and in the main room of the 2nd room we had, parter nearly fell through the chair as leg was broken. Would never stay again for a so called country hotel and spa I think I'm go travelodge next time
Positive experience: Room was very dated, curtains didn't come down as far as the window ledge and didn't pull properly due to a broken rail. Room overlooking flat roof with paint can, broken glass, bottles and weeds. Didn't make use of other amenities so unable to comment. Bed was comfortable with good shower, ironing board, iron and hairdryer.
Positive experience: Just completed a short stay at the Basingstoke CH & Spa.Very pleasant and polite staff who were extremely helpful. Breakfast spot on, good selection, food hot and enjoyable. Room was spacious and clean with a very comfy bed.Great value for the money.
Negative experience: What an absolute DUMP. My room was "cleaned" before arrival. I still found cereals on the floor. Air conditioning leaks after being on for 10 minutes. No toilet rolls in bathroom. The place is used for refugees so they are clearly cashing in there. The entire hotel is run down.
Positive experience: Nice staff & good room although a slightly uncomfortable bed. Received an unannounced upgrade which was nice. OK Breakfast. Bar shut at 23:00 & had no low/non alcohol beer. Would definitely stay again if the need arises.
Fantastic experience: This is a lovely hotel the staff are very friendly nothing was to much trouble especially the man on reception . Our room was clean and nicely decorated very comfy bed and breakfast was very good hot food Will definitely stay hear again loved it
Positive experience: Not the best of hotels its a bit out dated could do with a freshen up but it's a budget hotel. Clean abd tidy hotel thow. Food wasn't great but didn't bother us as there are loads of great takeaways or restaurants in the area.
Negative experience: First the positives, the staff were friendly and helpful and it was relatively cheap. Next the negatives which I will only list the main ones ... The air conditioning was broken in the rooms (we weren't the only room with this problem) and the heating was on full blast in the corridors which therefore made for a very uncomfortable stay as it was way too hot. The shower was like a small trickle on your head, the extractor fan in the bathroom didn't work, the towel rail was held together by tape and the bathroom needed a damn good clean. There were connecting doors in our room to other rooms which we could not lock which made me very uncomfortable, even though the other side was locked Lots of rubbish strewn around the car parks/outside seating area. I could go on but won't. Needless to say I will spend a bit more next time to be more comfortable.
Negative experience: Cheap for a reason. Heating on full blast in the corridors, air conditioning broken in the rooms. Shower runs at a dribble. Broken spot lights hanging loose from the ceiling. Fire doors often kept propped open. Staff were friendly and welcoming, which was one of the few positives.
Positive experience: Before going here I read some bad reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. The room we had was spacious and spotlessly clean and the bathroom was enormous. It is an old established hotel and is a bit tired but the food was lovely and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I could have stayed for more nights than just the one.
Negative experience: Hotel room okay. Meals could have been better. No extra quilt in room if it got chilly . there was extra pillows. Did not agree to paying for the pool. Pool was nice and so was sauna and steam room.
Positive experience: In convenient location just off the M3 with access to a gym and swimming pool if required (Small additional charge). My room was tidy and clean and had all the amenities I required; especially for the price I paid. I want to single out Ollie and Lynsay on reception who were very friendly and made me feel very welcome!
Negative experience: I'd give it zero but that's not an option.the rooms are dropping to bits and no cleaning of them at all. Someone changed the TV in my room while I was working don't know why, left the content of the box it came in all over the bed, plastic, polystyrene etc. Getting checked in is a nightmare, and you have to pay up front, no tabs at the bar so every item is paid, unlike most 4star hotels when you pay for everything when leaving. Talking about the 4stars whoever awarded these them wants sacking, it's a glorified contractors, asylum seekers Hotel, tribes of people sitting in the reception area, because apparently there's free WiFi in that area, yes you have to pay for the WiFi in each room, which is no good when you work from your laptop as I do. Its unsettling that there are more security guards than reception staff , and the place us just terrible I mean really terrible, I stay all over the country and this is by far the worst hotel claiming to be 4 star ever don't stop here.
Negative experience: Dirty smelly room, curtains not hung correctly, yellow stains on bathroom floor around toilet, hair in sink, stain in sink, dirty stained sheets, rust covered shower pole, poor food in bar. Only saving grace is staff are lovely. It is such a shame that this previous well respected hotel has been let go in standards so much. False representation of 4 stars on website.
Fantastic experience: I went back to the gym after 2 years What a Pleasant surprise. new flooring. swimming pool is beautifully decorated with lovely armchairs. steam room working again very happy and I’ll join again Highly recommended. For £29 a month what a steel.
Negative experience: Heating on full blast 24/7. No way of turning it off. Upon entering the room was greeted by the kind of heat I remember from after the leaving the airport in Atlanta. The knobs on the radiator had been removed and there was no visible way of turning it off. We had booked half the hotel and pretty much all the other guests complained about the same thing, except one, who apparently had a freezing room and no working hot water. Aside from that, staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were tired but clean. Wifi is not free in the rooms (bizarre in 2022!). Breakfast was ok, good amount of choice. Coffee was pretty disgusting, I imagine the machine needs a good clean. Bed not particularly comfortable, cheap pillows. Room had a pungent smell to it (possibly to cover up cigarette smoke). Shower was good, hot water and high pressure! Other thing to bear in mind is this hotel is currently operating as an immigration/asylum hotel. Neither a negative nor a positive, just something to bear in mind. Maybe this is why the heating is on all the time, because the taxpayers are subsiding it? Overall: Average
Negative experience: Faulty Towers was a comedy because you couldn't smell it through the telly. Friendly staff, but bedrooms incredibly ragged and dated. Smelt like someone had smoked in the room and it was badly covered up. Bed uncomfortable, room cold (though heaters provided), curtains falling off wall. I do a lot of time in hotels, and there is simply no way on Earth that this is a 4* hotel. I had expectations based on it being advertised as such and the Country Hotel and Spa definitely fell way short
Negative experience: Disappointing, radiator continuously noisey, bathroom fan did not turn off, water system extremely noisey. Staff levels low, ended up just sitting down to breakfast as no staff to check in with or to seat you. Real shame.
Negative experience: There is many things wrong. Took ages to to be seen at front desk, was waiting in a queue. Hallway that led to our room there was furniture everywhere and it was difficult to bring bags and walk through had to squeeze. The vibe was very odd we didn’t feel comfortable. Multiple hairs on the bed, cobwebs all over causing one of us to sneeze excessively all night. The room itself was very cluttered with outdated furniture which wasn’t even clean anyway. Also when we went back out and went downstairs a resident that was staying there with either colleagues or friends locked the door to the main part of the building and was mocking and laughing at our faces through the window as we tried to open the door the handle didn’t work as they locked it from the inside. It took a while for them to open it as they were laughing. Overall very disappointed and would like a refund asap!!!
Negative experience: Awful: family of 4 (2 adults 2 kids 10 and 12) arrived at 9pm. We just didn't feel safe: security, no trolleys nor help offered ' just go through the bar in overheated rooms: no clue for us or the staff to regulate the radiator. the smell was acrid because of chairs spilled by I don't what. the day after, pool for the kids: we had to pay 8 pounds + 1 pound per towel. Swimming pool was nice but icy cold shower. room were not cleaned when we got back: 'only when you leave staff said'. rusty towel dryer not working. no internet acess in the rooms; only in at the bar. a maze to get to our rooms each time; should I continue? All this for 400 pounds for 4 nights. nightmare.
Positive experience: We stayed at this hotel as part of the mystery coach tour. The hotel room was tired but clean, the beds were comfortable and the water pressure in the shower was amazing. We had a buffet dinner, mine was average, my friend doesn’t eat meat and unfortunately the other options were undercooked fish or overcooked pasta. Breakfast on the other hand was great, plenty of variety, tasty and really friendly staff. I was a little concerned after reading other reviews however in reality the refugees are using the hotel as any guest would, not ‘loitering’. They were friendly and polite and the children are adorable. Overall the hotel is definitely in need of some TLC however friendly staff make up for it!
Positive experience: Found the room adequate, for the price. Clean and tidy, although chairs in room a little worn. Bed was comfortable. Bar area was nicely furnished, and lady running the bar was polite and friendly . I enjoyed the food I had, ( gammon and egg ,with a good sized portion of chips)
Negative experience: When we arrived all seemed well got to our room and it was a state! The Tv table was about to collapse and the mould in the corner of the room was horrid! Chair should have been thrown away or had a very deep clean! When trying to get a refund the lady at the desk was far from apologetic about the state of the room and was hesitant in giving a refund on breakfast that we had just paid for. Don’t stay her. Didn’t get a refund and left within the hour it was that bad!
Negative experience: BEAWEAR OF THIS HOTEL.. The Basingstoke Country Hotel & Spa 2 nights ago we had to check in to this hotel due to our car breaking down close by. We had already had a bad experience so was reluctant but no choice!!! The next morning Antony was ill. We have both had COVID but he said he felt like he had it again. High temp, cough, sore throat!! So we booked another room online and informed them he was unwell. Meanwhile we arranged by phone for his car to be fixed. This morning at 10.am staff were banging on our door we informed them possible covid and explained the car was being delivered to the hotel so we could safely get out and also trying to organise a test to see if it was indeed covid. The lady knocking then left. Within 5 minutes 5 Intimidating men came to the room said we must leave immediately or they themselves would take further action! After trying to explain calmly again to give us half an hour we are waiting for the car etc we were bustled out the room escorted out the hotel through a side door and followed completely off the premises. Our car did arrive in 10 minutes luckily and we are now in it on the way to get covid test. This is disgusting behaviour from the hotel and all staff involved and ill be reporting this to all relevant regulators. The manager and the men refused to give their names also. I can’t think where else it can be reported. This place is just hideous!! Prior to this traumatic incident there were several problems which we overlooked but feel they should also be mentioned. The place is filthy and really needs a deep clean. Muck and dirt up doors , skirting boards etc. Taps didn’t work in our room and actually swung round on a complete 360. The toilet seat was broken I actually grazed my leg on this. Shabby decor all the furniture is old, marked and rickety. I have emailed Britannia directly about our ordeal as well as made contact on their Facebook page. So far I have been ignored.
Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel in a countryside setting. Staff and management very attentive. Had an all inclusive package including breakfast and buffet style evening meal and couldn't fault it (the lamb tagine was very tasty). Also dog friendly too! Will definitely book again.
Positive experience: Clean comfortable room. Run down. Dinner was shocking! 2 meals no vegetarian option and was a free for all. Staff couldn't careless. It's an imagination centre full of refugees. Very loud . Men hang around outside which is intimating. I wouldn't stay again. Definitely not as described as the website. Shame, has good potential
