Mollington Banastre Hotel & Spa - Chester: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Nice hotel. Convenient for Chester, but a little way out. Easy to get into the centre by bus, taxi or Uber. Good car parking. Heated indoor pool was a bonus.
Positive experience: Had afternoon tea. Food was fresh and tasty. Scones warm and crumbly. Plenty of parking and easy to find.
Negative experience: Pool cold , jacuzzi cold , not enough staff , staff pleasant and friendly , toilets broken , toilets unclean , very tired hotel , under dining tables filthy , sauna broken , no steam room either , food was fairly ok , changing rooms freezing , not enough sun loungers to relax on , could be so much better , lots of people moaning as couldn’t stay in pool or jacuzzi long , not enough beauticians , needs a good clean through in all public areas and some money spent on some areas . We had a laugh as such a dive , not luxurious or spa like really , staff were nice enough though .
Negative experience: I booked afternoon tea and asked if they did gluten free cream teas as my mum cannot tolerate wheat. They confirmed they did and I booked us a table. When we arrived they hadn't accommodated for her and had very little on offer that was gluten free.. very disappointing
Fantastic experience: I have been staying at what we affectionaly call the molly, on and off for 10 years, I live in Devon and have a business in Chester, so about twice a month the Molly spoils us, giving us a great room every time, giving us a delicious late steak dinner, the pool and facilities are great, the staff are great, management and owners are excellent. I have a coice to stay in any hotel in Chester, I always stay at the molly for the price and hospitality 5 stars from me, highly recomended. Richard Hudson (Business man from Devon)
Positive experience: Came here for a spa day for £40 I didn't expect much. The lay out of the pool area was off the gym and squash courts were seen from the pool and had to walk through the area to get to. The steam room was out of order. The pool was a strange colour and the jacuzzi was light brown water. So we decided to stay out of the water. The sauna was stinging my eyes. We went to get our massage and the ladies to start with was abut rude but when it came to the massage it was lovely only lasted 20min was suppose be half hour the lady knew what she was doing. We had food and even though they had minimal staff they were lovely and the scone and tea was lovely. I would of liked the pool water to be cleaner and bit more private and more seats at the side to relax. But for £40 I would say it was okay deal just for the massage and food alone.
Negative experience: On arrival was greeted by a very friendly male receptionist, showed us down to the spa area and explained the rest of the day. The hotel is clearly run on a budget, there was a large untiled area in the swimming pool(Although was covered), the seating area had limited seating and the few chairs that were there were broken, the area was cold and the water freezing, we had a treatment each which to be honest was very rushed, stated was 25 mins but was shorter. The cream tea was lovely 2 scones each with cream and jam. We then sat in the lounge area and had a drink, 1GandT and 1 pint £20.20. We checked into our room, the ceiling had clearly had a leak as badly stained and wallpaper bubbled, the bedding was stained, the pillows were very thin and stained. Breakfast was really nice a good selection
Fantastic experience: We stayed last weekend for a Murder57 event and couldn’t fault anything. The food at dinner and Breakfast was excellent. Bar prices are fair and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Received a phone call when we were half way home to inform me, that I had left my IPad in my room. The hotel staff were amazing and posted it back to me.
Negative experience: We booked this for Valentine’s Day as part of a spa package. Immediately, when we saw the hotel, it looked run down from the front. When we checked into our room, it was filthy. The carpets were threadbare and very stained. The bathroom was also filthy with neither the shower nor the toilet working properly. The spa treatments we were booked into, one couldn’t actually be done as a staff member called in sick and the other staff member said they were not trained to do it. I had a manicure and the actual nail salon space was filthy, the manicure was also awful as the therapist didn’t have any of the actual proper tools. The “spa” facilities were also filthy with the steam room being out of order and all of about 3 deckchairs out. There was also an incident in the night where police had been called due to someone knocking down a tree stump. Staff had also shared negative feedback about the overall quality and safety of the hotel. Overall, we did not feel safe and was disgusted at the price paid for it. We spoke to the manager who although was apologetic, was also very defensive and just kept saying the deal we got was through a third party. He also said they try to check all the towels, but not every one which is concerning. He said the carpets had been cleaned as would the room have been, which was not the case. He offered us a complimentary free stay - we politely declined. I would not recommend staying here.
Fantastic experience: I stayed Sunday evening. From booking the Mollington Banastre Hotel to leaving was in my opinion exceptional, welcoming service which just got better. Rooms & cleanliness, food & drink was beautiful. I will be definitely visiting again & my friends are booking soon as they said it sounds lovely, oh & the leisure facilities very nice with warm water in the pool. Karen Clark
Negative experience: Where to even start. As soon as we entered the car park I had a bad feeling, the outside looks like a hostel and did not look anything online. I came here tonight for my birthday present. And all I can say is how disappointed I am. The room was filthy. The windows were mouldy. Went to the “spa” area and it was dirty . I spoke to the receptionist and told her how I felt and how disappointed I was and honestly she was lovely could not fault her she got the manager straight away. Manager comes and did not give a crap how we felt as an outside point of view bearing in mind we drove an hour and half to here , we got catfished off the photos and the description did not match. All I can say is how do u run a business? You did not say sorry about how we felt and you were rude. I do not recommend anyone coming here especially when you just wanted a nice night away in a “spa”.
Fantastic experience: We had an overnight stay at the Hotel, A very big spacious room with a very comfy bed, Great quiet location just a short drive from Chester Town. The breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice I would definitely stay there again no hesitation
Negative experience: I went here over 30 years ago with my wife (then my new girlfriend) and wanted a sentimental return. It’s not gated well, I was cold the whole time I was there, I had to leave dinner to get an extra layer in and the spa was woefully under heated to the point I couldn’t face going in the pool. The whole place was just underfunded and shabby. I will however say the staff were fantastic and the evening meal though unexciting was adequate. Prices were crippling and the experience quirky, for instance we left the restaurant although booked on our table, went to our room and had a knock on the door asking us to pay for our meal weird and not great, give it a miss
Fantastic experience: Had a really nice time and afternoon tea..friendly staff and tasty food..will be back
Negative experience: Would not recommend the spa is rotten and the changing rooms are dangerous , locker doors hanging of hinges , best option would stay crawball manor 10 seconds up the roads. 100 times better and same price
Negative experience: After booking this as a treat for me and my mum so we could spend time together, I am absolutely mortified with the service provided! I booked the spa day and cream tea on Groupon, cream tea was just two scones, plates where dirty I had a hair on my napkin. We went to use the Leisure Centre, the pool was absolutely freezing the hot tub was just as cold and looked like a green swamp!! The changing rooms where disgusting and freezing cold! There was young kids in there crying because how cold it was, dirty floors, the sides were full of dust, cobwebs everywhere! Every room smelt like urine! Bathrooms were not sanitary at all! This place definitely does not look like shown on pictures! Tried speaking to the manager he was not interested one bit! Tried to tell me that it had nothing to do with him and he couldn’t do anything about it! To make things better me and my mum have came out of the hotel that we was in no longer than 2 hours max covered in flea bites! If anyone was to ask me how my experience was I would tell them not to even bother going! I came out feeling mortified for even booking this in the first place! DO NOT RECOMMEND!
Fantastic experience: Had my wedding venue at mollington banastre it was the best day of my life. The hotel location and service was exceptional. Amit helped us get the wedding booked then fintan helped us finalise everything. The day was perfect couldn’t fault anything fintan made sure our day went as it should and was there for every minute making sure everyone was ok. The food was amazing for the wedding breakfast everyone really enjoyed and commented how nice it was. Rooms for ourselves and the bridal guest was really good and cosy the honey moon suite was lush. Would highly recommend anyone wanting to use the hotel for a wedding venue or for a night or two away to do so it was amazing and they make sure everything down to every detail is right for you
Negative experience: I booked a spa day and afternoon tea, but we were denied the entire experience because we were three minutes late. The hotel felt dated; the customer service was disappointing, and the manager was condescending. If you’re looking for a better option, go to Craxton Wood.
Positive experience: Stayed here for one day. This hotel is outdated. Hardly any options for breakfast (not even yoghurt/fruit). Employees were nice.
Negative experience: Staff where polite and helpful The hotel is very dated, needs a full refurbishment.. rooms were absolutely disgusting if I am honest. Old furniture, bed was just terrible, mattress was far too big f0r the base, very lumpy, old ripped sheets but fresh. Bathrooms need of an update, very shabby indeed Food at the restaurant was OK, basic and pricey for what we had. Breakfast not enough choice, full English wasn't bad, basic again but OK. Fruit juices, cereals coffee and tea and that was it. The swimming pool was good, but all the changing rooms need a clean and tidy, towels everywhere and no staff about... Very dissatisfied customer, wouldn't book here again.
Negative experience: Stayed in this hotel six years ago and was good. Been back recently and has not been touched for this amount of time. Really dated place, rooms poor and dated, beds poor, furniture falling to pieces.needs a good refurb. Staff really friendly and could be a great hotel, great location and had loads of potential with having the pool but at the moment it is poor quality for the price.
Negative experience: Absolutely shocking it gets worse each day. Glad to have left the stay. Would not recommend to anyone. I’d share more photos how shocking the place is. How it’s still running I don’t know.
Negative experience: Heating not working, no control for it.. Old TV.... staff great. Owners.. Poor
Negative experience: Nope. Just nope. Pulled into the car park and immediately said to my wife that the place needed a face-lift. Lady on reception very pleasant and I feel sorry for her having to work in this place. Face-lift on the outside is one thing. Once we got to our room we spent a maximum of 10mins searching for somewhere new to stay. Stained walls, stained carpet, disgusting bathroom. We left as soon as possible. Just don't do it. Book somewhere else.
Negative experience: Where do I start. The receptionist when we arrived was nice, but that and the sauna and pool facilities were the only positive I have about this hotel. Our room was dirty, dusty curtains and room, filthy carpet, the room stank like stale food or rubbish and was noisy too with foot fall of other guests which isn't necessarily the hotels fault but general noise from the hotel was quite bad as well. The pool and spa facilities were okay, the sauna and changing rooms were clean but the pool had bits in it and was dirty and the jacuzzi was closed for cleaning which it looked like it needed desperately. The breakfast was below average, some food was barely cooked and very basic. If you book this hotel for multiple nights and decide to leave after 1 night you will not get a refund or gesture of good will. We didn't leave because of the state of the hotel or room but left due to a family emergency and the receptionist/ manager point blank refused a refund or any assistance towards a refund was also quite blunt and rude and showed no empathy. Do yourself the favour and book the Roomzzz hotel in the center of Chester as it's 5 star compared to this place which also looks like it needs closing down.
Negative experience: Booked a spa day through Groupon for my son as a birthday treat, along with his wife. We were never told that the Steam room had not been in operation for 2 years and the individual saunas were out of order. When they got ta the hotel, nobody informed them that the mixed sauna was available, or where it was.... They were booked in for a 25 minute massage, and only received 15 minutes. My son requested deep tissue and only got a mediocre one. Extremely disappointed in the service, and would definitely NOT recommend this as a Spa day. Avoid at all costs
Negative experience: horrendous…… building is filthy my daughter booked a spa day for myself and her nan for a birthday gift Nothing like a spa changing rooms were filthy and ice cold Steam room was out of order the sauna was freezing there was only 2 beds that was already getting used when we arrived the jacuzzi had sand at the bottom of it to which we was told came up from the waste lads smoking drugs in the hotel doorway and a large dog running around inside the hotel ….. afternoon tea wasn’t up to much either and I made it my buisness to walk through the kitchen …. That was filthy too to which I regretted even eating from there …
Positive experience: My star rating is only based on my visit and not a comprehensive full review of the entire venue. First of all, the room was perfectly fine. Lovely and warm, comfortable bed, TV & desk, and clean bathroom with powerful shower and bath. Parking was also fine, and more than enough spaces. Disabled Friendly :) The reason for my review not being higher, the venue seemed incredibly understaffed, the staff that were on were very friendly and welcoming, but you can see if was one person trying to be a waiter, barman and food runner. Additionally, quite outdated throughout. The food was questionable, I’ve decided not to upload a picture of my dinner but the cod wasn’t great, and the breakfast in the morning, great selection just not great quality. My card for my room disconnected at one point so that was a pain, and I heard another guest mention this has happened several times to them. Overall, I didn’t have the opportunity to visit the spa or other areas of the hotel, but for my room, yes I would stay again, for a drink or dinner I wouldn’t. The staff deserve credit and maybe more support.
Negative experience: Too many stairs for someone with poor mobility ,Mix up with room managed to get sorted only found things under the bed which made me think room wasn't cleaned properly, pillow dirty stained. Food in restaurant very basic and breakfast disappointing. They could do with having better signage outside on main road as night time very hard to find. staff were good Hotel smelt of pot, brought to the attention of staff
Negative experience: Only used the spa. A birthday treat for my mum. It was absolutely freezing. We could only stand 3 hrs and had to leave.
Positive experience: Only stayed one night on a second visit. Very good room and the hotel is rather grand but tired. Breakfast ok for the price, evening meal expensive so ate out.
Fantastic experience: Had a work's do there. Thoroughly enjoyed the food provided, service was was very good.
Positive experience: The Staff, cleanliness, rooms and food were lovely and we had a great time. However I made arrangements for 15 rooms, all ground floor especially as one of our group has MS and struggles to get upstairs. A second manager verified our booking details. But a third on the day spread us about from room 4 to 45 and insisted that the only room for our MS sufferer was upstairs and no lift. My decision is the management do not talk to each other and we won't be coming back. Gill
Fantastic experience: Lovely place to stay as a one off, we did a murder mystery night there, food order over the bar was good, the meal for the night was ok, the night was good fun, the bar drinks prices were high but that's the only place you can get drinks from, so kinda makes sense for a hotel, good selection of drinks though
Negative experience: We booked thru booking.com. The 2 rooms we booked were supposed to have a "garden view". This garden view consisted of a flat roof in serious disrepair from one of the rooms and a 4ft by 4ft walled courtyard from the other. No garden in sight from either room! In one of the rooms, the window frame was so rotten one of the panes was cracked and another was so close to falling out it was frankly dangerous. We also got breakfast included. Whilst this was "adequate" most days, on our last day everything was cold and there wasn't enough staff to keep everything topped up. People were complaining left right and centre. The plates were sat right next to a plate warmer that never got used. And alot of them were too dirty to eat off. There was also no proper coffee. Nor could they make a hot chocolate. The response from the staff was "only filter coffee" or a stern "No!". Even tho they appeared to have a professional coffee machine sat right on the bar! They also somehow managed to lose track of the payment we made for an extra day.. and thus decided to lock our children out of their room! This caused them alot of worry and is frankly unacceptable. Overall, this hotel is suffering from a lack of investment in repair and general upkeep / maintenance. We stayed there before about 13 years ago and our experience then was alot better. Unfortunately our experience this time will make us think twice before booking again.
Negative experience: DO NOT GO HERE!! Broken bed, disgusting kettle, no switch for heating, leftover crumbs and sugar from previous guest, filthy windows, leaking bath, grease on serving tray napkin and greasy toilet, stained sheets and headboard. Service was even bad, no staff, long waits, 45 mins late to check into room, why? Cause they obvs wasn't cleaning it! Food was dry and overcooked. See pics below, shocking!
Negative experience: Absolutely disgusting place. Waited nearly an extra hour to check in after our check in time as they were “late cleaning it due to staff being sick” then got to the room to realise I had a broken bed. Kettle was filthy, we reported this and they couldn’t even find us a clean one in the hotel! The knob on our heater was broken so cannot turn the heat up or down, apparently the appropriate response for this was “you won’t need it” .. the attitude is awful! The sheets aren’t clean, Bath leaks water all over the floor, windows have never been cleaned and neither has anything else, you can see grease floating in the toilet and sugar and grease from previous people on the paper on the desk, absolutely horrid experience, shame I can’t share the video on here of the bath leaking but the pictures speak for themselves, AVOID
Negative experience: After staying one night this weekend, we was most disappointed and disgusted about our room after paying alot of money.. Breakfast was not included in the price, but was offered free breakfast as a good will.. There was a massive water stain on the ceiling, the carpet was disgusting, stains, cig burns ect....the furniture was shabby.. What more can I say.. !!!!! Even the homeless people staying there was complaining..I felt so sorry for them.
Negative experience: The building and furnishings for sure have seen better days and the shower in our room jammed on. Checking out took over half an hour due to a long queue of people waiting to complain. It hard to find anything good to say about this place, however the meal at the evening event was good.
Negative experience: Please dont waste your money. Cant comment on the rooms as didnt actually stay at the hotel. The spa and cream tea experience however.....worse one ive been too. The spa staff themselves and service i couldnt fault. the staff at front house however were another story. The cream tea was over half a hour after we ordered it...they came with the plates and then forgot about us. bought the scones and then no tea...and then gave us crap sandwiches as a sorry. The pool area was over full, seemed not like the pics and there was stuff out of order. When we tried to speak to the front of house staff they threw a strop and stormed behind the desk after shouting about being sick of being. We were told to sit in a certain area then told it was our fault as they were overly busy and should of sat somewhere else...which is it? Overall bad experience and not worth it.
Positive experience: Great staff. Bit dated rooms but good value for money. Great pool facilities.
Negative experience: I really didn't enjoy my stay. The room stank of damp, there was a slug in the toilet, mold on the blinds... I cleaned myself the next morning with baby wipes rather than use the shower and used bottled water when brushing my teeth. Probably a bit over the top but I didn't feel comfortable here at all. Also not sure if my door locked so put my suitcase against the door
Negative experience: Dreadful hotel Rooms are filthy and disgusting the mattress full of stains carpet's walls filthy. We had lunch in the hotel bar I ordered a pizza and I'm 90% sure it was a Tesco value pizza.. The lockers in the changing rooms doors hanging off.. The only saving grace the staff were great... The breakfast was awful Avoid
Positive experience: Has seen better days. Needs more staff, a deep clean and reliable facilities. The pool was not available during the 3 days we stayed. We booked this hotel because our granddaughter loves swimming but we weren't even offered a partial refund or free breakfast. Breakfast choices were limited but the evening meal was good, despite a waitress who didn't seem to know what she was doing.
Negative experience: We booked one night at the very last minute with a little Bichon dog. We were given a ground floor room. I haven't seen decor like it since the 70's. Dirty stained carpet, blood on the bed base and a dirty headboard, carpet was covered in black fur from the last pet, as our dog is white wool coated. The food was very poor quality and cutlery offered was from the 70's. Spa was not working. The reception and evening serving staff were lovely. It needs huge investment, updating room by room and a better food budget. It would be better to refuse clients than to offer that standard of decor and furniture as it use to be a really high standard Hotel, but it's fallen through the floor. The Owners should be ashamed of themselves.
Negative experience: Evening meal was fab, hostess was amazing, she was definitely over worked, manning the bar, seating guests, taking food orders and waiting on tables single handed. Room was dirty, musty, damp, smelly, dated and badly equipped, not even a plug for the bath! The mattress was hard and too small for the bed base, Carpet was damp, couldn't walk on it bare foot, had to keep the windows open due to the smell and damp in the room, room stunk of cannabis with guests standing outside smoking it! other people were checking in and then checking out right away as the hotel rooms were that bad, 1 lady described the smell of urine in her room, along with the carpet having urine stains on it! Swimming pool facilities were out of order, this wasn't mentioned on booking or prior to arrival, to any of their guests. Overall, the place is in a shocking state of repairs.
Negative experience: I had the absolute misfortune of visiting what can only be described as the worst hotel experience of my life. I booked a spa day expecting relaxation, but what I encountered was a disaster from start to finish. The pool was out of order—something they failed to mention until I was already there. No sauna, no steam room, and everywhere I turned, I was greeted by signs of damage and disrepair. The treatments, which were supposed to be the highlight of the day, were nothing more than rushed, average-at-best sessions that left me more stressed than when I arrived. And don’t even get me started on the cream tea—it was a complete joke, bordering on inedible. Stale scones, tasteless cream, and the tea was lukewarm at best. The staff were utterly clueless and unhelpful, clearly lacking any proper training or care for their guests. But the manager was the worst of all—rude, dismissive, and completely uninterested in addressing any of the numerous issues I raised. The hotel itself was a nightmare: unclean, untidy, and quite frankly, unsafe. I will be lodging formal complaints with Health and Safety, Food Hygiene, and Trading Standards. This place should be shut down immediately before anyone else has to endure such an appalling experience. Avoid at all costs!
Negative experience: Spa day - pool out of order but not informed of this prior to visiting, 1 sauna working but not switched on, other sauna and steam room out of order. In the changing room the showers were broken, dirty and the thermostat broken so you almost burnt yourself. The hairdryers lasted about 30 seconds before going off. Treatments satisfactory but not the best I've had, cream tea was a small scone with jam and cream and a coffee. The manager was not very helpful when complaining either and just made excuses - needless to say we won't be returning.
Negative experience: Came here for the first time, didn't even bother checking in People complained about dirty rooms and rude staff and I saw it aswell! Wouldn't recommend
Fantastic experience: We enjoyed our stay . The room was very clean and spacious The food was good and would stop again. Staff was friendly and a special mention to Amy, who works in the restaurant, was excellent
Negative experience: Had a spa taster day, never again. The hotel is in desperate need of a refurbishment, the ladies sauna was out of order, as was the steam room. The main sauna had no lighting, so dangerous. The hot tub jets did not work. (Apparently we should have received a call letting us know all this, but didnt) The pool was nice although there was some matting around the edge covering up holes and damaged tiles. Food was very nice but dining room still had food on hot plate that hadn't been cleaned up yet. Wouldn't recommend.
Fantastic experience: We had our wedding here at the beginning of August 2024, the staff were fantastic and friendly, the food was absolutely perfect the bridal suite was a great room overlooking the garden. Finton the hotel Manager was a great host and ensured the day ran smoothly we can’t thank him enough….
Negative experience: Very dated, musty damp smell, dusty and dirty, kept shoes on in the room as thread bare and stained. Dinner was OK, definitely supermarket ping meals. Breakfast horrific. Gentleman on the front desk was lovely friendly and polite. Swimming pool OK, dead flies round the pool, cracked and dirty tiles. The tiles in the pool moved when stood on. Seems like they take the money but put nothing back into the hotel. Such a shame as could have really good potential. Making it a wedding venue is low on the list in comparison to the work that needs to be done.
Positive experience: One night stay, no time for the spa. Room was very dated-decor, curtains, carpets, bathroom all need an upgrade-but everything was clean and fine for a short stay. Staff were very helpful. Given the cost, dinner and breakfast were good value.
Negative experience: A little rundown needs new bedding and updating.. evening meal was great no issues.. breakfast ok, everything under heat lamps.. seems to be a workers hotel.
Negative experience: The worst hotel I’ve ever stayed at. Everything felt dirty and dusty. Don't think the rooms have ever been hoovered. Our bathroom sink wouldn’t drain properly. Awful musty/sewage smell everywhere. On one night they played really loud music that could be heard throughout the hotel and was vibrating the floors and walls. Called reception many times but went to answer phone. They only picked up once (11:30pm) and we asked them to turn it down and they said they would “turn it off now” but music continued to play until 12:05am. For £100 a night it wasn’t worth it. Will never come back again
Negative experience: Room smells horrible. Mattress is very very uncomfortable I had to sleep on the floor. Dirty carpet. Worthless hotel I have ever used . Very disappointed.
Negative experience: We attended a murder mystery evening entertainment was excellent. We asked for an accessible room, We were given a room which was the furthest from the amenities, and having mobility issues makes walking difficult. The room smelt musky, and after using the toilet, I found the reason why !carpet was sodden along with a pool of water on the bathroom floor which caused a slipping hazzard. we were then moved to a room not accessible so we couldn't use thee shower, tried the sink, and the hot tap didn't work, so couldn't wash! The carpet had black marks, there was a rusty lamp, windows were filthy, shower curtain rail was rusty, and the bed was rock hard. Breakfast was edible, however, as epileptic should expect the juices to be labelled as grapefruit is not allowed as interferes with my meds. If I could I would give no stars or minus defo wouldn't recommend it and 100%wouldn't be coming back
Positive experience: Got welcomed by the lovely lady on reception who is single handingly running the place, my hat goes off to her she's doing a brilliant job and deserves a medal. Hotel smelt lovely and clean as I walked in, room was clean, was a fan in the room which was useful. Lovely quiet area close to town which was ideal. Only downside would be I wouldn't bother with the pool area. For the price of a night definitely can't complain.
Negative experience: Cold shower / hot sink Very dated furniture Worn and chipped Taps leak Carpet badly stained No saucers for the cups No bin Only light in the room is a small bedside lamp !! At the bar I asked for a pint of Guinness Barmaid ( not english ) said what is that ? I showed her the pump ,she said she didn't know how to use it and had to Google it !!!! Waited in the restaurant but couldn't find and staff to serve me ,
Negative experience: Rooms are not what is imaged on their site. Stayed in two rooms over two weeks. The rooms are not desirable at all. They all need a serious update, as they are stuck in the 70's. Broken/torn Curtains, I have to wash my hands after opening or closing them. The window in the bathroom does not close properly to lock. Shower has no power in it at all and signs of damp on the walls and ceiling. No sockets near bed area. One very large window in the room had condensation and limescale in it, did not make it feel good on a beautiful day. Sofa/ sofa bed in room is filthy and has a carpet of dirt and vape pens under the cushions Spare single pop up bed in the room with no sheet or covers on it that had stains on it. Restaurant very quiet. Did not use as menu was not appealing. The rooms are not that quiet, can here every door, light switch, shower and tv from the rooms either side.
Fantastic experience: My daughter and I had a 3 night break at the hotel celebrating my 80th birthday We had a very enjoyable break. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was large and comfortable. The food was delicious. There was a beautiful garden with lots of birds and a friendly robin. The only thing to let us down was the weather.
Negative experience: HORRENDEOUS! I booked online after realising it was the same hotel who left me fighting to breathe following a serious lung infection last year due to a room saturated with damp I asked for a refund today as rightly so did NOT want to check in. I suffer with life threatening conditions and infection to me can be fatal. They refused to refund and blocked price line refund me also! I asked for insurance details they refused those, this time I’m going to make an application to court. It needs condemning as far as I’m concerned. Not even as much as apology! It sickens me beyond words.
Positive experience: Very dated rooms, no plug socket next to bed which should be as standard for phone charging. Desk in room was sticky when trying to work on laptop. Room was spacious and clean and had what was required. Shower was great.
Negative experience: After a long day at the zoo with my two sons aged 8 and 2 I was really looking forward to getting to the hotel. I had also promised my boys a swim in the morning. I was well greeted in a very dated reception, circa 85 in which spiders were crawling down the walls. My 8 year old did point this out but staff were un-phased by the uninvited guests. We went to the room (29) to find a large family room....... The double bed which was two singles put together sank and squeaked upon sitting. The carpet was so grimy I told my children to keep their shoes on. My 8 year old pointed out stains on the bed sheets. He also pointed out rusted lamps. TV didn't work. The toilet didn't flush. Only I as an adult could reach the bathroom light. The "kids room" had a creepy loft hatch with a light on inside. The kids beds had chunks missing off the headboards and they were badly warped. Mattresses did not appear to fit the beds. The dust throughout was unbelievable, perhaps the housekeeping had their vacuum explode in this room after cleaning the rest of the hotel. There were random switches on the wall that did nothing. The chairs were stained. The wallpaper was scuffed and peeling. There were crayon scribbles on the wall. The door lock was faulty, took me four attempts and a shoulder to get back in to the room. The doors are dirty. Bath was dirty. The ironing board made me feel sick. I didn't feel that me and my children were safe! I am shocked that any booking site would deal with this hotel. In the public areas it smelt musty, damp and old. There was ivy growing inside the stair well, not just a window left open and it blew in.... It was growing. Dead bugs were everywhere. We were not given any information regarding the pool or WiFi. I decided that if that was the quality of the family room I didn't need to stay for WiFi or have any desire to see the pool area. I spent 15 minutes in that room, 15 minutes in my car trying not to disappoint my children as I tried to find a clean and safe hotel. After 30 minutes I checked out. I was offered another room but I just wanted to get myself and my kids out of there. Nothing would change my opinion on the filth. Thank you for my refund.
Negative experience: Quite possibly the dirtiest room I've ever visited. Faeces left in the bath! Someone's dirty pants left in the corner of the room (number 46 btw) Carpet that looked like a crime scene. Padded headboards from the 80s that were discoloured and greasy from a 1000 previous guests. Ripped and torn vallance. Plaster and paint falling off the bathroom ceiling. Dressing table door hanging off it's hinges. Wardrobe door hanging off it's runner. Tea and coffee supplied but no kettle. Coffee table that had quite possibly been taken out of a skip (seriously). Without a doubt the worst hotel room I've ever experienced. Avoid like the plague.
Fantastic experience: Rooms are basic could do with being upgraded but all the requirements required for a comfortable stay, great swimming pool and gym and lovely garden, staff were fantastic and breakfast was good
Fantastic experience: We had a lovely stay here, the staff were very friendly and the food at dinner was great- I’m still thinking about the halloumi salad, and the fish and chips / veggie lasagna were excellent. The pool was fun for our little ones and the garden was beautiful. The rooms were basic but clean and comfortable, my son loved the bunk bed! The breakfast was basic and it may be nice to have a few more options like fresh fruit, yoghurts or pastries, but all in all we enjoyed it. Great location for the zoo too!
Positive experience: We came here for a spa day and to be honest we made it 4 hours. We had a lovely massage and a facial. We thought we would be nice idea to sit by the pool. There were 3 beds 1 had a big hole. 3 steam/sauna rooms only 1 worked which didn't have a light on. The whole place is run down and needs money spending on it
Positive experience: Slightly concerned prior to my arrival regarding some reviews I had read but my experience was very satisfactory. My room which was well equipped with disabled facilities was excellent. The service from the staff was also very satisfactory and the dinner menu was enjoyable. I and my fellow guests would all be pleased to return on another occasion.
Positive experience: We booked the hotel as part of a friends birthday celebrations for a murder mystery night. Upon check in the staff were very friendly. The hotel certainly looks like it has seen better days though. The exterior looks unkept and the reception area was ok, just very 90’s in its styling. We checked into the room and it was fine. Very basic but clean and had what we needed for the night. We noticed the walls were very thin almost immediately as we could hear people talking in the room next door. The facilities again are very tired. The pool area and gym would require extensive refurbishment to bring them up to modern standards as the pool itself had a number of wobbly tiles around it, the changing rooms were like a maze with a large number of bulbs not working so they were very dimly lit. Sauna didnt have a light in there making it impossible to use safely. Nevertheless we all had a laugh swimming in the pool and catching up with everyone. I couldn’t fault the food in the evening, very tasty and generous portion sizes. I feel 3 stars is fair as the hotel itself (excluding the facilities) would be around a 2 star standard but adding the facilities on gives it that extra star. All the staff were helpful apart from one barman who overcharged charged a friend of mine £55 who then had to wait 2/3 days to get the money back! Now we paid over £110 for the room as part of the package (the experience and food was about £59 each on top of that) and it was far too expensive for what you get considering the same room was available on another website for £65 for the same time. Overall, it is a safe place to stay for the night, tired and run down but staffed with some very friendly people.
Negative experience: Sadly I think there was a massive lack in communication between Groupon the hotel/spa and confusion on my part but my visit today was quite disappointing. I arrived at the hotel at 9.55 as my email stated "10 till 5 use of facilities" . I followed the signs and parked at the back as it said spa ... Parked up as there was orange blocks up so couldn't drive down, so walked the path instead, after walking abit down I couldn't see any clear signs or entrance so made my way back up and headed for the front desk. The gentleman at the desk said "hello" and I said "hi I'm here for a Groupon spa day?!" He asked my name / looked it up and proceeded to let me know "I was late for my treatment" (no one not the hotel nor Groupon even asked me what treatment I was wanting nor the time it was set to or I would of made extra time to make sure I wasn't late for that as far as this morning was concerned for me as long as I was there for 10ish I was just turning up and sorting it out while there) I was walked to the spa area and given one towel. And left in the hands of the lady doing my "treatment" "Here's your 10 o clock " it was all abit awkward. The back massage was lovely (didn't choose that but they read my mind) but I went in feeling obviously rushed and very confused. After I sat in the waiting area and looked around ... I felt very out of place. there was 3 members of staff I saw 2 doing treatments so they where in and out of the rooms and one who came in once to serve cream tea to a group of 3, they dropped it all on the floor felt so sorry for the girl as I think if shes wasn't beong talked to by 3 people at once she would of been able to concentrate more on putting the iterms down. After that no one .. I didn't know what to do with myself as I felt I didn't want to get anything else wrong. I didn't want to swim incase cream tea was going to be served to me at any moment . I didn't know if I could ask for drinks or where to go and didnt know if I had to get re dressed just to go get something from somewhere. It was all abit awkward and isolating. Sadly I left at 11.⁴⁵ without the cream tea part . Didn't know what to with myself. In all I'm very disappointed and my husband isn't happy with it being a bday present for me. He feels hes let me down in the choice he made. If I did go again I definitely would go with someone else and share the awkwardness.
Fantastic experience: Charming Country House Retreat! I am currently staying at the Brook Mollington Banastre Hotel & Spa in Chester, and I must say it has exceeded my expectations. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed by the friendly staff and the serene surroundings. Country House Charm: The hotel’s historic charm is evident as soon as you step onto the grounds. Dating back to 1853, this 3-star country-house hotel offers a unique blend of history and comfort. The beautiful gardens and well-preserved architecture create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Family and Pet-Friendly: As a family traveler and pet owner, I am gratefully appreciative of the hotel’s commitment to being both child-friendly and pet-friendly. It’s not always easy to find accommodations that cater to both kids and furry companions, but the Brook Mollington Banastre Hotel does it seamlessly. On-Site Amenities: The hotel truly stands out for its on-site amenities. The indoor swimming pool provided a refreshing escape, and the sauna offered relaxation - not the mention the sublime poolside jaccussi! After a day of exploring, The well-equipped gym allowed me to maintain my fitness routine without leaving the premises. And let’s not forget the convenience of having everything right there! Culinary Delights: What truly impressed me was the personalized service from the chef. Upon discussing my fitness regime, the chef agreed to create a custom meal for me. I enjoyed a delicious made-to-order salad along with perfectly grilled meat. It’s rare to find such flexibility and attention to individual needs. Highly Recommended: In summary, the Brook Mollington Banastre Hotel & Spa is a hidden gem in Chester. Whether you’re traveling with family, pets, or simply seeking a relaxing getaway, this charming country house ticks all the boxes. I highly recommend it for a memorable stay.
Positive experience: This hotel has alot of character. The staff and service is really good. The food was excellent value and is genuinely outstanding. The building could do with extensive renovation The swimming pool and facilities were particularly dated but it has a certain charm that does blend well with the experience. The spa package and afternoon tea was good value and the room we stayed in was excellent.
Positive experience: I went for spa day with family, it was birthday present which needed to be used before it expired next month. The staff were friendly and helpful so no complaint there, but the facilities themselves could do with a make over, especially the showers, not all of them have proper shower heads, so we had fun making them work. Then the water was either extremely hot or freezing, you couldn't have anything in between. After we had our treatments, facials and had swim, we decided to get some lunch but all that was available was one type of sandwich. I think maybe because they had a large wedding there the night before they decided not to do food at lunch time. But I don't know so we ended up having lunch at home. I wouldn't go again I would instead save and try Carden Park which is far better. If they updated the facilities and made sure they could feed you when it would be great but its not. Also it would be good if they provided you with more than one towel and if they made the shower/changing area not so cold.
Fantastic experience: My daughter and I had a spa day package booked but when we checked the reviews we were very worried. I’m glad to say that we had a wonderful day. Thanks to the reviews, we knew that we needed to take our own dressing gowns, footwear and padlocks for the lockers. The provided towels are quite small so we took extras. We used the pool, jacuzzi and sauna and had a cream tea (scone with jam and cream) and a pot of tea or coffee). We finished off with a lovely, relaxing massage. Paul introduced us to the spa, explaining where everything was. He, and all the staff were friendly and helpful. The facilities were clean and the slight smell of new paint in the hotel was proof of on going maintenance. We hope to be back soon.
Negative experience: Checked in and member of staff was helpful and polite, went to room and horrible smell found someone had used toilet and not flushed it. Room was dirty with rubbish in draws, behind bed, bathroom. Told reception and gentleman apologised and said he had no other rooms. Went to use pool and changing room was messy with lockers broken, floor needed a good clean. Pool was cold so could not stay in it, spar not working with no notice anywhere, shower constantly running as won’t turn off. In morning found cockroaches on window and when informed lady on reception laught and could not care about it. When I asked for a manager she told me they not on site but will call me within 24 hours. Still waiting for the phone call 10 day later.
Positive experience: Came for a spa day with lovely friends, Paul the Spa manager was very friendly, we had a great day with excellent. Massages .,swim in the pool and ,soak in the lovely hot jacuzzi . Yes its tired ! But felt clean . , decorators where busy and maintenance was being carried out , the lovely grounds and friendly team make it a friendly place .
Positive experience: It was pleasant enough. Breakfast was OK had to wait for more food to be cooked Pool was OK it needs alot of maintenance doing jacuzzi wasn't hot it was colder than the pool. Steam room broke. Sauna is very small room for 2 at most. Wide range of Gym equipment very good Evening meal was lovely
Negative experience: I've never stayed in a hotel that's has been as cold as this. The first room we were given the windows did not fit and the draft though them was ridiculous. They moved us after we complained, but no heating on in the room we were moved to. Told us the heating is on a timer. Also the Restaurant was empty but the service was very slow. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Positive experience: Came here on a Murder Mystery night away. On main road a short taxi trip from city centre. Reception staff very friendly and helpful. Room quite basic but clean. Shower over bath with plenty of hot water. Walls VERY thin. Could plainly hear next room conversion, every word even though they weren't raising their voices. No matter, just put a radio station on the in-room TV, for everyone's privacy. Evening meal was well executed and the buffet breakfast was of a reasonable standard.
Fantastic experience: Really surprised by the reviews for the spa day. We arrived today and the reception staff were really friendly, particularly Paul. He took our details and showed us around. Very welcoming. We liked the pool area. There is a sauna and a jacuzzi also. Both were lovely and warm. The massage was really good (and I go for massages often so know when they're bad). I felt really relaxed and the therapist knew what she was doing. Shame the other, larger sauna was closed and the steam room but it wasn't much of an issue for us. We then had a cream tea. The Coffee was superb (really decent quality coffee and a lot of it - and offered a top-up). There weren't any gluten free scones so I had a GF chocolate torte instead. Really tasty. We had a great time overall. Yes, the ladies changing rooms could do with some heating, BUT it's not the end of the world. I would come back for another spa day (and I can be a somewhat critical reviewer - when something is bad). Thank you for a lovely day, and thank you Paul for being so friendly.
Negative experience: Absolutely awful!! My sister booked this spa stay for my birthday when we got here place looked nothing like in the pictures we hot to the room it was so basic again nothing like in the pictures we then asked for upgrade the gentlemen advised he has to ask his manager he could clearly see we were not happy he then showed us a room which was worse then the one we had how is this an upgrade? He did not see to care that we were unhappy we them decided to use spa its way not clean the changing rooms had water everywhere dirty towels left hair on the floor absolutely disgusting breakfast was no better basic coffee tinned fruit this has got to be worst place I have ever stayed how is this hotel a 4 star I don't know!! Birthday ruined this is definitely false advertising
Positive experience: Came for a 2 day break. Was a little concerned after reading negative reviews, however they could not be more wrong. Staff were so friendly and helpful, the room was immaculate. Went to the spa which was really good. Will definitely stay here again
Negative experience: This place is dated and needs gutting the rooms and lounge area have old worn furniture. Only had one drink before going into Chester but the bar is expensive. The breakfast was okay although my wife didn’t want to try anything other than toast. Didn’t go in the spa area or pool but we had a look and again it was dated and mouldy.
Negative experience: After trying to book a spar day with this company on the 1st Feb, someone took my details but didn't get back to me. 2 days later, I contacted them again in which I received an email address to contact. 10 days later, I received an email to say this date was fully booked which had me requested another date. No response... The company had redeemed my voucher from groupon without providing me with any service. Groupon refunded me after showing evidence. A lack of communication and the ability to redeem my voucher without providing a service would have me believe that this is not a company customers can trust
Negative experience: Last year I became a member of the gym through a rewards system run by my employer. I went down to the gym and signed up with them no issues and was issued a gym card. I have had no issues until very recently when I went down only to be told very rudely by a member of staff claiming to be a family member of the owner of the hotel, that my membership was invalid and refused my entry. I showed proof of my payments by providing a payslip since it automatically comes out of my pay every month. I also provided email confirmations very clearly showing my payments and my membership. His response was a series of rude remarks followed by him taking the gym card off me and telling me to leave. I now have to go through my work portal and jump through hoops to cancel my membership since I was not able to cancel it at the gym in person because my membership 'does not exist on the system' even though I have had no issues going for the previous 6 months. As a result I am still paying £80 a month for a gym that apparently I do not have the right to use. For a member of staff that works on reception you would think that they're there to help however not only did this member of staff think he was better than everyone since he claimed his family owned the hotel but he also offered no solutions or help and instead told me to get out. I would avoid this gym at all costs as apparently if you pay you still don't have the right to use their facilities.
Fantastic experience: Had an excellent time here with brilliant service. Dinner was excellent and enjoyed the time we spent here. Room was basic but very clean. Went in January when it was 0deg outside and was a little on the chilli side inside the hotel.
Negative experience: What a shambles of a place. I went with my wife for a ‘spa day’. We arrived to the wonderful aroma of weed from by the main door. We were then told there were no locks for the lockers unless we were carrying a padlock on us. There were limited amenities. No steam rooms, no hot drinks, no shampoo, no conditioner, no shower gel, no gowns, no slippers. Then they forgot to meet my wife for her treatment. After half an hour she gave up and left. If I could give this absolute hell hole of a place a zero star rating I would. Avoid at all costs.
Fantastic experience: We have stayed here previously. The hotel is well positioned for going into Chester town centre or the Zoo. Nice facilities and very friendly staff. Good accommodation of dietary needs. Will definately be coming back.
Negative experience: Avoid at all costs , do not recommend this place at all. Our recent stay found the place very shabby and in serious need of attention. Was booked in for a Boxing Day Gala Dinner and Dance , which was attended by just sixteen people . Bar staff and waiters were not up to scratch and didn't have a clue what they were doing .. Will definitely not be going back , the place is awful !!!
Positive experience: Attended a party so only saw main function room, reception and common ground floor areas - not the worst 3* hotel you'll see and staff seemed friendly and helpful. Bit old fashioned in parts, would have given 4* but £5 for a pint of lime and soda is taking the biscuit at this level of hotel...
Negative experience: We booked the Mr Carroll’s Christmas Murder 57 experience, for approximately £200, at the Brooke Mollington Banastre and it was disappointing from beginning to end. Firstly, this hotel is not fit for purpose and spoilt the experience from the moment we walked in. The place smells of feet and damp and our room was cold and draughty. The bathroom smelled unclean too and the shower curtain was stained, mouldy and smelled strongly of wee. The bed had a huge uncomfortable dip in the centre and the springs stuck out. The spa facilities were unmanned and the lockers had no locks provided - the changing rooms had a very school locker room style vibe and not somewhere you want to relax. We decided to drive home and not stay the night as the smell of the whole place and the cold triggered my asthma and made my chest hurt. In terms of the meal, the calamari was like rubber and such poor quality. The roast of soggy and over cooked and seemed cheap and of poor quality. The desserts were nothing exciting here and tasted like something from the supermarket freezer section. It was really disappointing and everyone on our table agreed that it wasn’t worth the money paid. Finally, we were underwhelmed by the actual murder mystery aspect of the evening. The actors were talented and stayed in character well but there was no effort in terms of their attire. They just seemed to rock up in anything and it didn’t gel well. I was excited by the evidence and the clues provided but in the end, they didn’t even tie in to the final reveal of the story so it seemed pointless. The story had no real justification and just wasn’t very clever. It also felt rushed at the end which detracted from the enjoyment. I can’t believe we paid nearly £200 for this experience. It was absolutely rubbish and I feel completely ripped off.
Negative experience: I can only give this place a 1 star .... It totally needs renovating . I went to enjoy a Spa day but I left after coffee ( treacle) and scone and the massage ( the beautician was great very friendly and the room was clean ) I should of read the reviews before thinking of going . The photos are totally out of date , what you see on the photos is not what you get
Fantastic experience: Ignore previous reviews, we checked in with Chelsea at reception who couldn't be more helpful and the next day all of the team followed suit. Facilties were exceptional , I swam every day and the pool and spa area were all clean and tidy and functioning correctly. Breakfast is highly recommended as the quality was outstanding and the buffet meant lunch was not required!! Rooms were clean and tidy and all staff were polite courteous and couldn't do enough to help. The dog loved it too! so we will be back next year or even Xmas for a few days. Thanks to all for a superb stay ... 5star hotel. ( I've stayed in many premium hotels around the world with work and have not had the level of service we got here) Don't let the standards drop team !!! You should be proud of yourselves. :-)))
Positive experience: A bit shabby and very basic. Our bathroom door didn't shut properly, the TV remote was held together by gaffa tape and the decor of the rooms was circa 1989. However, the staff were amazing, the food was good and it was clean. The pool and jacuzzi were nice, the gym and squash court were great and we enjoyed our spa day. The sauna held a maximum of 4 people so there was always a bit of a wait for that and the steam room was out of order, which was a bit disappointing. Bet we had a lovely weekend, and Chester itself was interesting and vibrant, bur the hotel is 2 miles from the centre so we drove in and parked.
Fantastic experience: Lovely place. Attended a family wedding. Staff were great. Rooms OK but our room had broken catches so couldn't leave open as the wind blew them . Otherwise awesome hotel.
Positive experience: A new manager has just taken over and is doing his best to address the many issues. He has a good team with him and hopefully this will help make big improvements to a once excellent hotel. Our room was clean but a little dated, The breakfast was nicely cooked and presented well but limited choice. The swimming pool and spa pool were nice but I nearly fell over getting in pool as there is a sloping ledge that you really can't see. Also there were no toilet rolls in the ladies changing room and a very soiled loo.. It would have been nice if shower gel was provided too and gowns for the ladies having a spa day. This hotel has such a lot of potential and I'm sure the new manager will be successful in turning things around.
Negative experience: Room was damp and mouldy, we had to request new bedding because it was wet. Everything is super outdated, shower is disgusting. The were several leaks through the hotel and peeling wallpaper/ damp marks on the walls from previous leaks. Manager was extremely rude and unprofessional towards the end of our stay. The breakfast was shocking, food was left out over night, plates were dirty etc.
Negative experience: Really disappointed with how this hotel is. I used to look at the hotel and think wow. Sadly that was many years ago. The hotel hasn't been updated. The rooms are old dingy and bare. The drinks are ridiculously over priced. £8 for one drink but bar staff make up the prices depending on how they feel. 4 drinks for £45 the same 4 drinks £36. I'd love to go back when the place has had work done.
