Negative experience: I’ve been a loyal Nuffield Health member for years, mainly for convenience, towel service, and friendly staff—especially in Wimbledon, where I trained before. I’ve seen a clear decline in both facilities and service, especially in Bermondsey. While the male staff here have always been great, and the female manager has been kind, the gym itself is deteriorating. The pool looked amazing in photos, but from day one, I noticed a leak above it. It took a month before they even acknowledged it and shut it down for repairs. The showers aren’t the cleanest, and the saunas are disappointingly cold, there are maybe 3 hair dryers and all hair straighteners don’t heat up properly —not what you’d expect from a so-called premium gym charging £100 per month. The final straw was an incident at closing time today. As I was drying my hair, just minutes before 10, a female staff member simply turned off most of the lights in changing room—leaving me struggling to gather my things in the dark, using my phone’s torch. No courtesy warning, nothing. Yes she mumbled that they are closing soon, but who would have thought they would just turn off the lights. I left 10:01 from the changing room, and stopped by the exit to consider raising that with manager, but when I did that, their response was dismissive: “Well, we close at 10.” A simple, “We’ll look into it,” would have been enough, but instead, I was made to feel like I was at fault. This isn’t just a Bermondsey issue—it’s happening across Nuffield locations. Standards are slipping, while prices remain high. If you’re charging premium rates, at least maintain a premium experience. Right now, Nuffield is failing.

Positive experience: The pool, steam room and squash courts are a great perc to have in the neighbourhood and the team are always attentive. Only complaint: the changing room sauna needs to be a lot hotter to make any sense.

Negative experience: Came on a day pass to use the pool , sauna and steam . The pools nice enough the steam is OK but the sauna is small and is literally the worst I have ever experienced in terms of temperature . I have had warmer conditions in Scotland than that sauna

Negative experience: I found out that I could get 50% off membership through the Vitality scheme 5 months after I had joined Nuffield Health. During an unpleasant exchange with regional manager Svetlana at the gym, she told me that according to the terms and conditions of my contract not only I am not entitled to a refund of the difference for the previous months, but if I want to take advantage of the Vitality discount I would have to pay £50. I flagged that throughout the several months as a full member the pool was closed several times, and on a few occasions the actual gym was closed. So not a great experience. I told Svetlana, who kept talking over me, that if they charge the £50 I would go to another gym. She said fine. So I left Nuffield Health and joined Virgin Active. I also get a 50% discount there. The swimming pool is 25m (instead of 18m at Nuffield) and they are open until later on Fridays and during the weekend. It's odd that a manager prefers to lose a long standing customer for the sake of £50. It was not about the money, but fairness.

From the moment I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by Kelly at reception and the dedicated sales team member, Sohag. Their professionalism and friendliness set the tone for my visit. During my tour of the facility, I was incredibly impressed: The gym is impeccably clean and features high-end machines for weights, cycling, and endurance. The changing rooms are spotless, thanks to the diligent efforts of the housekeeping team, who not only maintain cleanliness but also tidy up after those who may lack consideration. Their professionalism deserves recognition. The steam room and swimming pool are simply amazing, adding a touch of luxury to the experience. The changing facilities resemble those of a five-star spa, ensuring comfort and convenience for every member. What more could one ask for? The value for money is undeniable. Located in the heart of Bloomsbury, this centre is a true gem for those prioritizing their health and wellbeing. After my visit, I decided to cancel my membership at another gym and commit to Nuffield Gym. The quality, attention to detail, and focus on wellbeing here are unmatched. Negative experience: i am a regular at Covent garden branch, but joined a lunch time Pilates on Tuesday because my office is moving nearby so i wanted to try. the studio was full of hair on the floor, and the instructor behaviour was very unpleasant, his attitude was like as if the class belonged to him than the participants, his pace of talking too fast for Pilates and seemed he was there for himself. i met some ladies in the changing room and learnt he has a reputation apparently, and is not open to feedbacks.

Fantastic experience: Reception staff are great. Ola helped me transfer my membership to this gym and was so attentive. The facilities here are way better than the one I was previously using (Nuffield health Brondesbury). The gym floor is nice and well equipped, everything is always clean, bathrooms are okay. There is a sauna inside the female changing room, which is nice. They give out towels as well (something my previous Nuffield gym doesn’t). Could do with extended opening hours but not a major issue.

Negative experience: It was my first time using this Nuffield Health gym and I won’t be returning. The receptionist was so rude and abrupt and acted like you were inconveniencing her. She was sat on her phone facing sideways and didn’t smile once. Definitely not consistent with the lovely staff at Nuffield Health in West Sussex

Negative experience: Thé location / gym was great but had a very negative encounter with the manager. The is place has a no foldable bike policy and offers no alternatives - not even allowed to take my bike into the changing room. The policy doesn’t make any sense, I was told it was dangerous to walk around with my foldable bike (of about 11kg). When I signed up they were happy to accommodate the foldable bike policy but for some reason changed a week later - once I had paid for the subscription. The manéger was unhelpful/ un thoughtful. People with foldable bikes - stay away!

Negative experience: I always find them ok despite with NHS discount I still pay £60 a month. However what happened today completely changed my mind. I wanted to speak to an instructor how they would handle certain injuries. Receptionist for me a woman from the office. I very quickly told her that I wasn’t seeking medical advice as I have spoken to my GP. I merely wanted to get an opinion from a different professional group. She said she wasn’t qualified to give medical advice, I repeated again I wasn’t looking for one! Then she said she wasn’t qualified to advise, then I said in that case, I shouldn’t speak to her. The atmosphere got a bit tense. What is really incredible was the woman and the receptionist literally talked about me when I was there! I thanked the receptionist for her efforts and she had no expression on her face but really? You can’t wait until customer left the premises before you talked about them? It’s a bit embarrassing if you get caught outI am looking around for an alternative option. I would rather pay more to get basic respect. The only reason I joined this one is it is two minutes walk from my place and they offer classes. That woman who couldn’t advise, your attitude is offensive and condescending, I am sure people told you that before, do something about it

Positive experience: The gym staff are friendly and the equipment is good. However, a few minor tweaks are needed (1) for some time one of the two lavatories in the male WC area has been unusable (2) some of the lockers are broken and unusable and (3) the male showers smell of sewage which could down to the drains. In addition, they are antiquated and in desperate need of refurbishment.

Since the management has been taken over by Mr Hanlon and Svetlana there has been a noticeable improvement in the overall cleanliness and efficiency at the club. Negative experience: This gym cares about sales and scamming people they do not really care about clients goal but making a relationship with people. They made me join duting the covid and did not let me cancel so i paid a wholemembership for the whole year membership despite most of the time it being closed and did not even consider about my health. Most of the trainers do not have a clue on what they are doing they either follow each other or they copy social media on what excercises are trending what a shame nuffield the secrets got leaked by management.

Negative experience: Wish zero stars were an option. Absolutely filthy rotten dirty. Had the cheek to say I’ve never complained about the cleanliness before, only been attending two weeks also it’s a conversation that shouldn’t be had. Insects and mould in the soap dispenser and sewage down the walls. Hasn’t just happened throughout the day it’s clear it’s not been cleaned in a while. Also, refused to cancel my membership instead was ask to scan a barcode leaving me the the early cancellation fee.

Negative experience: I am absolutely disappointed for the service. I am been a members of Nuffield since 2018, but the service is drastically dropped down since February. The changing room is dirty, sauna is always out of service and never been cleaned, reception team are ignoring the members. I don’t recommend to anyone.

Negative experience: Rotating door of staff, no manager, Steam room not working for 3 weeks, gym floor Unattended, the list goes on. This gym seems “abandoned”. It’s not cheap so Save your money, there’s much better options around.

Negative experience: I’ve been a member for 5 year and This used to be a great gym with good value for money but unfortunately it has drastically changed in the last 5 months, seems like Nuffield is consolidating and cutting costs by reducing staff. Since 5 months ago the pool gets closed very often, the steam room breaks and takes like two weeks to get repaired, there’s no one to go to when something is needed and the few staff left take no accountability for anything. I'm thinking in cancelling my membership.

Negative experience: Nuffield gym russell square The staff are friendly and helpful, the Gym is ok but some of the machines are from 1988 the mens, changing room are ok, the mens showers need a Good deep clean, as for the sauna it needs to be refurbished very bad smell in men's sauna, not to worry years of sweat, and goodness knows what else Like i said sauna needs refurbished, The swimming pool needs to be refurbished And the showers in the swimming pool have seen Better Days the steam Room has gone down Hill Lets be honest Nuffield Russell square has gone down Hill, Nuffield Gym you need to spend money on Gym Equipment and fixing the place up.

Fantastic experience: I've been going to this gym for almost a year and I love it! There are so many really good classes, the staff is lovely and helpful, and I love that they give you towels. The changing rooms are clean and comfortable. It is a bit pricey but if you go often it is more than worthwhile.

Negative experience: I been going there for few months now and they haven't had towels and it's been frequently like this and when you ask for blue rolls they say its out of stock why is this is it because staff aren't really checking there stocks and on there mobile phones at all time and people are paying ridiculous amount of money for there memberships something needs to be done about this blue rolls are important to wipe things down please fill up the dispensers.

Negative experience: Beware: Sharp practice on billing, ignore customer complaints! I joined on a 12 month contract, 1 Sept 2021 to 31 August 2022. On 30 March '22 I asked to cancel early. They asked why; i said the club was dirty; they said this was not a valid reason. I therefore replied on 31 March '22 “Ok, could you take this email as notice to end my membership by 31 August 2022? thank you." There was no reply at all to say this was insufficient to cancel... Yet when Sept 22 came around, they debited another £64 from my account! I pointed out my 31 March request to cancel, but they simply ignored the email, and refused to refund the £64.. I now face the hassle of having to go to my bank to reverse the direct debit and/or taking them to the small claims court. Really unsatisfactory. They also refused to provide the contact details of anyone in Nuffield Health centrally to whom I can raise a complaint!

Negative experience: Went and tried it out, attended a core class and it involved the gym floor which was filthy, everytime I touched the floor (had to use a mat) my hand were covered in debris and dirt.

Positive experience: This health club has been fairly good over the past few years but seems to have taken a turn lately. Most of the Technogym treadmills are consistently offline or broken, which results in error messages popping up mid-run followed by the machines shutting down. Also, there seems to be a shortage of small towels for the past few months. I understand if there is an issue once in a while but come on, buy some new towels if there aren’t enough!

Positive experience: I joined the gym two months now and I have no complaints! Staff are lovely and equipments are new. Overall I am happy of how clean and not too busy the place looks but timings are not the best. The gym usually opens at 6:30a.m. in the weekdays, preferred to be 5:30 a.m. or at least 6 a.m. , and 9 a.m in the weekend which is far late to open in a weekend. I hope this will be amended.

Positive experience: I’ve been coming here off and on for 10 years. The locker rooms are exactly the same and some of the lockers are in need of repair. The showers were replaced about eight years ago, and the equipment has been upgraded over the last few years. There were initial efforts following the reopening to keep the equipment clean but one thing I’ve noticed is the amount of dirt that builds up on the elliptical machines and other machinery. Doesn’t seem to get a very good clean and it never has over the past 10 years.

Fantastic experience: I really like this gym. It’s not the biggest, though if you come at the right time you often feel like you have the place to yourself. The pool is great and the steam room a real treat. The staff are always super friendly too

Fantastic experience: Nice gym with lovely, friendly and helpful staff. Especially enjoy the classes - all the instructors seem great. I go to bodypump most nights here and all the instructors are brilliant. It's fairly easy to book on, not too busy like some central london gyms. Small pool can get crowded quickly but is great during quieter months.

Negative experience: I have been a member of this gym for over a year. When I joined the gym was good and not very crowded. There were still some issues, such as a limited number of stretching mats, but overall it was good quality for central London. After the refurbishment last year, the quality of the experience has dropped drastically. There are new machines everywhere, for a total of 60 on the main floor. The logic of how these machines were picked is still not clear, since a lot of them are rarely used, while others are used constantly. Instead of providing more stretching areas, they reduced the stretching area to FIVE mats on top of a mezzanine (yes, that's right). The mats are all super close to each other, and when you exercise it is not unusual to accidentally hit the person next to you. The area is not relaxing at all, and people are forced to squeeze small mats right next to the machines if they don't want to wait 30 mins. The gym is also starting to get overcrowded, and they are still showing people around as if there was space for more members when that's obviously not the case. The classes are generally good with some exceptions; there are some very good teachers (John and the gentleman teaching Pilates) but others are not very experienced/professional. The staff at the reception is generally nice. I am not clear what Nuffield business model is, but it is simply not working for retaining people.

Fantastic experience: The training floor fitness machines are going to be replaced soon, and the gum renovated. That foupled with a comfortable pool and nice, well-equipped, spacious studios makes for a very good gym if working/living locally.

Positive experience: small gym, only one weight rack, no abs wheel, no back extension machine, no conditioner in the shower, shower doors don't close... and I paid a £7.50 surcharge for the privilege whilst I was away from my usual gym. disappointing. Staff were lovely and looked after my suitcase which wouldn't fit in the lockers.

Positive experience: #nuffieldtraveller nice gym near Russell Square tube station, has a good but limit range of equipment with the weights and cardio area separate from the TRX/CrossFit area. Morning, lunch and after work would see this gym very busy and probably your fighting to get on the kit you want. Pool area is very nice with a calm atmosphere has a steam room but sauna placed in changing rooms, would be nice to have a jacuzzi but for the space they have their done well. Nice clean showers with only one body/hair wash dispenser, 3 of the showers I tried didn’t work but fourth time lucky. Lockers are fine with membership card locking so you just pop it in and take the key. Hairdryers and shaving areas. Staff friendly and helpful. The set up of the gym is on multiple floors which can be annoying (especially on leg day) but that’s down to the building and space. #nuffieldtraveller is just a reviewer who uses a lot of different Nuffield gyms across the UK and gives his own views and opinions.

Negative experience: It's an okish gym. Limited space, but it's central London so that's the best there is. My problem is with opening times on a weekend. 9am is simply too late!! Surely you can get one person to start at 6am so we can at least have a 06:30 opening. The staff however are 5 stars and above! Lovely bunch of people and a credit to the company!

Negative experience: The equipment is very outdated and the gym is exceptionally small. it's not like other Nuffield gyms at all. Most Nuffield gyms have warrior ropes, plenty of free weights, an additional room for weights.. I mean it's great if your just a class goer or a swimmer.. but terrible if you are someone who enjoys plyometric training, weights, cardio machines etc..

Negative experience: Im disgusted with how this gym has treated me! After paying upfront for 10 pt sessions the personal trainer wouldn't turn up to my sessions and would turn up half an hour late after disputing this I got my money back for the remaining sessions left.. fast forward to 4 months later and the gym has randomly taken money from my account for 4 pt sessions I haven't had they keep saying they will call me back but don't! Don't join this gym they will rip you off!

Positive experience: The gym space itself is not huge but it was quiet when I visited so this was not a problem . Free weight area adequate but machines could have been more plentiful and also more variety. The atmosphere was calm and the stall friendly enough. I didn't go to the Pool but it looked great. Changing room and showers were very clean and had high spec equipment.

Negative experience: This gym has slipped dramatically in standards in terms of equipment and staffing since it was taken over from its previous owner, Cannons. Being a long term member I have had to continuously complain about the copious number of issues that have failed to be addressed. The main issue is the lack of cleanliness about the club. The pool, which is in need of a deep clean is stained with month old phlegm. The sides are grimy and slippery with what seems to be layers of dirt. Moving onto the steam room, after waiting over 3 months for what was supposed to be a quick refurbishment, the walls are coated in dirt. Under the seats and the drain seems to be home to some form of parasitic worm infestation - That is just f****** disgusting! The gym houses a sauna but you'll never need to use it as gym changing rooms offer heat exceeding that of the saunas. When talking to the management team back in 2015 I asked them if they intended on replacing the air-conditioning. Their reply was it would be fixed within 4 weeks, two years later and I'm still cooking in the changing room. Their solution to this issue was to buy two cheap fans which spit dust throughout the room - not the best if you have allergies. You'll notice this reoccurring issue throughout the gym especially when we take a look at the showers with layers upon layers of dirt, urine and soap coating the walls. No point showering here! Even the Personal Trainers have agreed! - Oh did I fail to mention that two of the showers have been broken for over a year?! Oops. When you get to the actual gym floor upstairs you notice that standards are somewhat better! Minus the fact that half the equipment is dated or "temporarily" broken. Upon a closer look you will find that the gym floor is actually rather bland. During peak times, usually from 12-2 & 5-7 you'll spend over a quarter of an hour waiting for equipment to become free meanwhile you'll either be sweating because the air-conditioning is off, or freezing because the heating is broken. Overall the gym floor lacks equipment. There are far too many cycling and running machines. There is one benchpress for the entire gym.... One squat-rack for the entire gym..... I will just let that sink in... However there are plenty of free standing benches, if you can get on them but not enough weights to compliment them. The staff are another story all together. The personal trainers are some of the most genuine people in the club. They're kind, friendly and extremely helpful. Sounds great until you have to deal with the front of house. The reception manager who often covers the front desk is somewhat out of touch with the modern world. He's ill-mannered and possesses a rude body language which tends to make you want to avoid him. He is also extremely unhelpful and reluctant to give out information. Once I asked him for the head offices number and it took him over 10 minutes to give it to me. He is unable to reply to the most basic questions and is usually on his phone. In retrospect I would not recommend this gym to anyone until the standards have been dramatically upgraded. Overpriced and underfunded. Many people in the gym feel exactly the same as me or have left due to the rapid increase of pricing for such a poor facilities.

Negative experience: Good and quiet gym and pool with nice changing area and showers. However, customer service is very poor, which, for a gym costing this much, is disappointing. Nuffield Bloomsbury, if you're going to market yourself as an upscale gym, please have the customer service to match.

Positive experience: I've been a member at Nuffitld Bloomsbury for 4 years. During that time I've seen many improvements including refurbishment of the pool and reception areas, installation of new lockers, several attempts to improve air circulation in the damp basement corridors and so on. This latter issue is not completely solved yet, but has definitely improved. I have never had issues with the fans at the squash courts, which I use frequently. The staff are always delightful, and the main weights/cardio area is well equipped. Busiest in the late afternoon/early evening.

Negative experience: To sum up: A commercial gym facility that clearly is in need of more improvement and work. Gurl at the reception wasn't very enthusiastic to help me. Gym equipment is quite old. Lockers are locked in the 80's, needs a refurb. The sauna and steam are ancient, bit unhygienic in fact. Steam wasn't so good. Sauna is in the men's changing room area which is a nice idea, but stank of urine which completely put me off. Guys watching other guys bodies, which is a real put of in a place like this. Won't recommend and won't return back either. One star for the free guest pass entry. I got weird looks in here which is really concerning.

Negative experience: I rung up and booked a squash court a week in advance - was advised that as neither of us were members we had to pay £15 each for a "day pass" to play squash. I said that I thought this was too expensive considering we were just going to use the squash courts - to which the person on the phone said that he would let us have the squash court for £20 (for both of us - so £10 each). So my friend and I turned up on the day, having left work early to make the slot, and I explained that I had a court booked for 5pm. First of all there was no record that the squash court was booked, In fact I could see that there was tip-ex covering up whatever was written on the 5pm booking. However the tip-exed 5pm slot was not filled with anyone else so we were offered it, but were told we had to pay £15 each. I explained that we had made a deal with "Greg" the previous week over the phone, but were told that we were "mis-informed" and that "Greg had left his job". This is hardly what one would like to encounter having made a legitimate deal in advance. The duty manger refused to even acknowledge, let alone honour,this agreement; which was disgraceful. It wouldn't have cost the health centre anything to honour this agreement, in fact they actually would have had paying customers for an hour of simple squash. Had we then had a good game this could have turned into a weekly full price session or membership. Instead my friend and I had to spend our £20 at the local pub, which I can assure you had infinitely better customer service than this place.

Fantastic experience: Excellent gym: nice helpful staff, decent range of machines, and good list of classes lead by knowledgeable enthusiastic instructors. Changing rooms are far too hot, however.

Positive experience: EDIT: They have since installed standing fans in the changing rooms which has helped alleviate the heat. Unfortunately no further changes made in the squash court so that still remains. Even so, bumping this rating from 2 to 3 stars for the proactivity with the fans. I had no qualms with Nuffield before. The staff are lovely and friendly (and still are), however now I have bought a pass for PureGym down the road. The reasoning? For 8 months there has been not only a ventilation problem in the squash courts, but also the mens' changing rooms are an oven. There is no way to change comfortably after a sweaty session. Due to the heat in the squash courts, I am never burning as many calories as I could as i overheat LONG before tiring myself out in the normal way... Despite notifying management innumerable times, it had not improved at all in the last few months. As i explained to them, even a small desk fan in the courts and changing rooms would help that stuffy, sticky, humid, tropical rainforest aura. One small fix, and this gym will be the best around - but apparently easy fixes need to be stonewalled by senior management for a few months first.

Fantastic experience: Excellent gym facilities; equipment kept in good order. The pool is lovely. Reception staff are welcoming. Gym staff knowledgeable and motivating. Visiting this club is an all round positive experience.

Negative experience: This centre has a well-rounded assortment of gym equipment and facilities, and friendly staff. Despite this, there is an issue with air quality and the chemicals used to address apparent odour elimination. There are automated spray devices placed in numerous locations (especially the halls) that pump toxic chemicals at frequent and regular intervals throughout the day. Not only is the smell close to unbearable in the halls, air fresherners have the potential to provoke allergies, asthma and headaches. Try reading up on the topic by looking up "air freshener" online for a start. There are potentially even more harmful side affects. I have talked to staff members twice, and more recently put my concerns in writing to the management after getting nowhere with my verbal complaint. After two more weeks, still not a peep from the management. They don't seem to view this as an issue, nor apparently take comments from their clients seriously or in a timely fashion. What odour are they trying to cover up anyway? Proper cleaning and filtration would seem to be the correct approach to solve this problem, not the spraying of toxic chemicals into the air to mask the nasties. Very poor.
