Our comment from FitFit UK about Seven Islands Leisure Centre:
Seven Islands Leisure Centre, located in London, United Kingdom, offers a range of facilities including a swimming pool and gym, making it a convenient choice for fitness enthusiasts. Many users appreciate the friendly and helpful staff, who are dedicated to assisting visitors with their needs. The centre features a good-sized swimming pool that is well-regarded, particularly for recreational swimming.
However, the centre is facing significant challenges regarding cleanliness and maintenance. Numerous reviews highlight issues such as dirty changing rooms and showers, poorly functioning equipment, and a general lack of hygiene that detracts from the overall experience. Users have reported unpleasant odors, broken lockers, and unkept facilities.
On the positive side, the centre hosts free access for Southwark council residents on certain days, which is greatly appreciated. Additionally, the cardio and yoga facilities have been recognized for their variety. Ultimately, while the centre has potential with its dedicated staff and spacious swimming pool, improvements in cleanliness and maintenance are essential to enhance the experience for all visitors.
Services, Machines and Guided Classes
Seven Islands Leisure Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Does the job
Negative experience: Horrible gym, if we can actually call it that. Lacking in machines, equipment and facilities to do anything. Changing rooms and sauna, not accessible and sauna haven been broken for more than five months. Cleanliness is nowhere to be seen. Dirty machines, dust everywhere, bathrooms smelling so bad. And to have the cherry on top staff is not helpful at all, they are just sitting playing games in their phones So unsatisfied in general, not recommended to anyone.
Positive experience: Good place for exercise. Friendly staff
Negative experience: Dirty changing rooms in gym and swimming areas .Water pressure in showers and most don't work. Very unpleasant water fountains and generally unclean centre
Negative experience: I don't get Internet connection
Negative experience: I never write negative reviews (no, honestly!) but I absolutely have to in this instance. I've just been to a morning swim (7.30am) and the state of the showers were absolutely shocking. SHOCKING. There were bunches of hair everywhere. I'm not talking a bit of hair but bunches and bunches all over the wall, the drains, the door, everywhere. The shower when I entered was bone dry, which means it's not been used yet ahead of me, which would also mean that the showers were not cleaned with closing last night or upon opening today. To add to this, the shower are is full of these small, black flies, there must have been at least 50 inside the shower cubicle and they landed on me as I showered. It was horrendous. I've given up literally mid shower and dried up and left. I'm unsure how Southwark Council can justify updating and refreshing the equipment of their Leisure Centres at the moment when clearly, they are lightyears away from getting the basics covered, such as a minimum standard of hygiene.
Positive experience: Clean, but sparse
Negative experience: Been waiting outside 30 mins for the gym to open? Stood outside with loads of others. What’s going on?
Negative experience: Shakira I have been ring the number they have one the website and the number dose not work it’s been like this for over a week it even dose not have a ringtone
Negative experience: Used the gym, very outdated, most stuff was out of order or had pieces hanging off. Its also very cramped. Especially in the resistance gym. Would rather travel a little further and use peckham leisure centre.
Positive experience: The place in general is OKAY In terms of the changing rooms especially in the men's, no good, it's understandable that the floor is wet due to the sauna however the smell and one of the showers is broken. The resistance facility area is generally not bad however its not good, Some Equipment is rusty, some weights have rubber bits missing of it. Training there will still be effective and good. Cardio/yoga Facility is better than resistance as it have a range of stretching equipment,a roller, jumping box, yoga and medicine balls and dumbells, and wide range of cardio machines. Overall the place is good in terms of training, friendliness and working out but in terms of hygiene I'm afraid that's is what's missing. And if you visit there you will see what I mean
Negative experience: Pool is filthy
Negative experience: so unclean, filled with flies and moths in both the gym and swimming changing rooms.
Fantastic experience: Very welcoming and friendly staff
Negative experience: I truly appreciate the benefit of having access to the gym and swimming pool for free on weekends for Southwark council residents. However, the facility requires significant improvements in cleaning services and maintenance to ensure better conditions for users. The swimming pool shows signs of extensive mould and appears very old. The shower rooms are problematic, with poor water pressure and showers that last only 4-5 seconds. Additionally, one shower is excessively hot while the other is too cold, with no option to regulate the temperature. The facility has two hairdryers, but one is broken and temporarily fixed with tape. The gym is dusty, and the air conditioning frequently malfunctions. There is a noticeable lack of cleaning staff present during the day to maintain cleanliness in both the swimming pool and gym areas. Moreover, some lockers are broken, which is inconvenient for users. One positive aspect is the sauna, which is well-maintained and clean.
Negative experience: The facilities are old, there is always a bad smell and lack of care. The gym machinery is broken or old, just is good some team members and class they offer
Fantastic experience: Gym has a good range of machines Very good swimming pool What really sets this centre apart is that the staff are sincerely engaged in their efforts to assist the public They are really dedicated in endeavouring to help you with questions and will stop what they are doing to come to assist the public Corinne and the other desk staff have stood out over the years as really demonstrating the best in ‘face to face ‘ even in difficult circumstances I want to also express my deep gratitude for the compassionate and professional help, including first aid. That NOAH recently administered He was conscientious calming and really supportive , cleaning and dressing a serious wound to my young daughters ankle after an accident on a damaged round about at Southwark Park. A good centre staffed by an exceptional Team
Negative experience: Has gone downhill so much recently. Used to love swimming here. Now the place is absolutely filthy. The smell of urine hits you before you even walk into the changing room. Place is usually covered in a layer of grime. The pool it self has also declined in cleanliness. It not uncommon now for there to be a lot of visable dirt there and even stuff floating in the pool. That life guards also do almost nothing to enforce good pool etiquette. The pool is also usually overcrowded due to the lack of lane swimming sessions available. On top of this the disabled entrance to the facility is often left wide open so anyone can walk in off the street which makes me worry about leaving my stuff in the locker even with a lock on it. So many things that could be easily remedied but management don't seem to care. A massive shame.
Negative experience: The pool are not in a good condition and the changing rooms are very dirty
Negative experience: The shear state of this gym including the pool is outrageous. No care for the people using the gym at all. They are to busy letting people in for free and letting the place get so run down it’s near on impossible to improve without knocking the place down and starting again! Countless times of machinery “out of order” or even machinery not operating correctly! Shambles!
Negative experience: Please read!! I went for my usual swim at 7pm and when i came back I have realised that someone broke my pad lock and accessed my locker stealing my phone and wallet. In the following days I have sent several emails to Southwark Leisure Centre and to the GM of Seven Island Leisure Centre explaining what happened...nobody cared to reply to my emails. If you intend to subscribe to this facility please refrain, they lack of access control (most of the time the disable access is wide open allowing anybody to get in the changing room and if something happen to your belonging, well... that's your responsability!), gym and swimming pool are dirty at all time and there is a serious lack of maintainance and basic hygene especially in the wet changing room and sauna. Please do not waste your money here and look for something better in the area.
Negative experience: I used to use this place years ago and I came back and can't believe how bad it is. It's filthy, the toilets are disgusting, I told 2 members of staff and basically looked at me like yeah...so what. The gym equipment is rusty and old and the whole place needs a complete refurb!!!! Makes me feel dirty in there!!!
Negative experience: Spent 30 minutes on their website trying to book a swim for my children. It says you have to join first. tried to join TWICE because it says an email has been sent which you have to click on but none arrived, not in Spam folder either. So spent 15 minutes ring on the phone but no one answers. What kind of useless Organization is this?? I just want to book a swim for my children and they make it as difficult as possible. I can book a holiday much quicker. Southwark and Everyone Active should hang their heads in shame at being so useless with our money.
Negative experience: I went there yesterday and as soon as I got to the changing room I was shocked because of the dirt. Everything was VERY filthy. The pool is even worse. I could see green dirt on the pool walls and I also saw some gelatinous dirt floating around. I don't normally write reviews but this morning I woke up feeling sick and wondering if it was because of the pool. I don't understand how people can continue swimming there after seeing the dirt. I don't think the pool should be open.
Negative experience: Why never answer on phone? Called every day on different hours and wait and wait, but nothing. And men toilets smell very bad.
Positive experience: `The staff at the reception as you come in to Seven Island are just lovely and that what it earns three stars for. The place is a death trap waiting to happen. Lets start with the actual weights area there is equipment sitting there broken for months now. simply not good enough as their sister gyms seem to have the care you expect of a gym. It gets crammed if there is more than ten people on the gym floor Much of the equipment needs some tlc .Where it is good is the actual cardo area though again many of the machines are broken and stay that way for weeks. Now here is the real problem the changing rooms have constant issues the hand dryer has been broken for weeks now. It is like a swimming pool in there . Often it wets the soul of your trainers and I have seen people slip as they leave one man narrowly missing banging his head -' it is dangerous .' If there was as much care to monitor how wet it was getting as there was to rush to turn the music and tv off twenty minutes before closing we might be getting somewhere.. It is a shame as the pool looks great and I repeat the staff are lovely , Seven Islands just needs some TLC . Being in such a great central area it should be a gem not a rough stone .
Positive experience: Not a bad gym. Has some work that needs doing, a lick of paint, deep cleaning of the equipment but its got all that you need to put a decent workout together.
Negative experience: Appalling hygiene ! Urine everywhere in the men’s dressing room. Told the staff who did not seem Concerned by the issue… Urgent need to take action !
Negative experience: It’s public leisure centre so keep your expectations low, that said it has really gone down hill since Southwark council took it over, the changing rooms have went into a state of disrepair and you need a gas mask when going to the toilets
Negative experience: Gym filthy, gym changing room filthy, sauna falling apart, no timer for 4 weeks now in men's sauna. No drainage in the wettest areas of the changing room, can see sewer bug larvae swimming around in the nasty puddles. Only 1 shower actually goes hot or cold, the other two have broken mixing valves and temp is all over the place. Only drinking fountain in the whole building is broken. Why is there not one inside each changing room? There are posters saying drink water in the sauna and posters saying you must be dressed when going out. They no longer sell water at the centre so if you forget to fill, good luck. Only good part is the pool and some of the staff, otherwise 1 star.
Fantastic experience: The staff members is the best thing about this establishment. Especially Roy the life guard. The machines in the free weights room honestly should be scrapped. Shout out to "The Beautiful Sauna Ladies" Wednesday evening palate classes are my favourite.
Negative experience: Multiple gym machines are broken at any given time and it takes months for them to be repaired, if at all. The leg press has been broken for probably 8 months, the chest press for 2 months. There's always a bunch of cardio machines that are broken. The selection of machines would be ok if they all actually worked. The changing rooms stink and there's a general dirtiness everywhere. The staff have always been fine and it's in a good location, but that's about it.
Positive experience: The pool was great but minus 1 star because the bottom of the pool is a little bit dirty. The people there were so kind and let us play pool volleyball with them and lended out some tips for swimming ♀️ I am insanely happy. We come here ever Saturday now and always leave happy.
Negative experience: Sauna is dirty, people cut their nails in there, spit in the shower, toilets are dirty broken and smelly. The pool is ok, sometimes seems really clean, other times you swim and see bits of dirt or hair or other things in the water. If you use Southwark free gym and swim, ok it’s free you can’t complain. But not worth one penny if you pay for it, dirty and people treat it dirty.
Negative experience: I have explained to the receptionist that is my first time and asked her for help and advice. She briefly explained and booked me in. When attending for a swim later on, I was kicked out by the lifeguard as this was a family session and I didn’t have any children… Gym is very dirty. Most of the equipment doesn’t work or is broken. The highlight was the Lady - spin instructor! Aww and the sale team is the biggest failure.
Fantastic experience: Very nice
Negative experience: All areas are dirty, only 3 of the 8 treadmills are working right now + many other machinss are broken, changing rooms are always boiling and covered in water/grime so really unpleasant. Has all the basic offerings of a gym + pool but overall experience as someone who has been coming here for 2+ years is pretty terrible.
Positive experience: good standard leasure center for swimming and gym. Sauna is not working for long. Membership fee is reasonable except the membership service is bad.
Negative experience: The swimming pool itself is quite good. However, let's talk about showers: they're really dirty, even the first swimming session in the morning which signals a lack of cleaning, the toilets are also in a pretty horrendous state and are just not cleaned properly. But what's even worse is how the actual shower functions; you literally have to hold the button at all times otherwise the water will stop flowing. The water is also scorching hot, it's literally impossible to stay under the shower for more than couple of seconds, your skin just starts crawling from how hot the shower is. It really needs fixing but seeing other reviews and how long this issue persisted I doubt this will be addressed.
Positive experience: It is my first time using the leisure centre's pool and changing rooms, and reviews are too harsh in my opinion. I went at 9am, and the pool was not crowded, max 4 people per lane. Water is at an ideal temperature for a healthy adult, and 2 lifeguards take care of the people at the pool at all times. It is not dirty, as reviews say so Women changing rooms are warm, but not at a gross level, but an ideal one. Showers have bearable hot water coming out of them and you have to keep pressing the button for water to come out as these are made to save water consumption. they also have 2 hairdryers, one of them didn't work and the other one was at a good quality. Yes, there are flies inside the changing rooms, but these are humidity flies, they like humid places, so they mean no harm (although it is not the ideal scenario to have them). In conclusion, it is a good leisure center at a pretty fair price; may not be luxurious, but it is also not terrible and will definitely come back again.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic local asset with facilities for the whole family. A huge pool with a proper deep end too. This place should be protected from developers and copied far & wide.
Negative experience: Been there for swimming classes for three months and the pool really needs a deep clean. Overall the changing room is warm and water temperature fine for me as someone young and without any illness, but can be a bit chill for senior people. There were dust accumulating in the pool just like other people posted and human skins in the water especially in the shallow end.
Negative experience: Very rude people at the reception.
Positive experience: Good facilities and nice 33m swimming pool
Negative experience: Poor facilities and awful, unhelpful staff. Horrendous place.
Negative experience: Well due for a complete refurbishment. Gym equipment is rusty and coated in dust. Several machines have missing parts / are broken. Toilets/changing rooms have absolutely zero ventilation and feels like a sauna (don’t even want to describe what it smells like).
Positive experience: The gym needs new equipment but it is alright
Positive experience: Small but well equiped gym. Staff are very nice and helpful. The sauna is inside the dry changing room and swimmers have to go one level up leaving a wet trail behind. There are sporadically some problems with the hot water.
Positive experience: I'm a regularly goer as part of Southwark council residents, and they offer free swim and gym for Friday whole day and the afternoon/evening on the weekend. The staffs are super friendly and helpful. The pool is 33M which is pretty decent for its location. It can be a bit busy with up to 10 people booking per lane, but due to "no-shows", typically busy day will be around 7 people (which is already quite a lot considering varying speed of swimmers and some like to overtake others etc). - The gym equipments are comprehensive but quite worn down. The seats and cushion pads are pretty cracked up, but any any major problems like the cables coming loose do get fixed up. - There is an amazing sauna in the gym's changing room. People are generally well-mannered and it's pretty hygienic - The changing room itself that can be quite wet and dirty. There is a mop in the changing room and sometimes we have to take matter into our own hands to clean up the floor a bit just as we don't dirty our trousers when changing. - There is only one toilet (wall side) that can be used but cannot flush, and I can't remember if the urinals even works, at least one of them has forever been taped up since at least 2021). - On the swim-side, only one out of 3 toilet works in the male changing room. The rest of permanently locked and there is no urinals. - The showers have very poor water pressure. Occasionally, the hot water doesn't work. It also only stay on for 1-2 seconds per push, so you have to keep your hand on the button to get a good rinse. Overall, it serves its core functionality and its cheap (even with the paid membership) and you get what you paid for.
Negative experience: Rude staff and swimming teacher better stay away from.
Negative experience: Some of the staff are rude and unhelpful. There's never soap in the dispensers in the women's toilets. Extremely dusty and dirty gym equipment and quite a few of the machines out of order. The pool changing rooms stink, showers are useless. Can't use the sauna, naked women sitting about in there, not on towels .
Fantastic experience: Great gym! Love their classes! Really helpful trainers.
Negative experience: The pool is nice and spacious. However, I was appalled to find out that there were only 2 showers available in the female changing room. Both of them not super clean, full of moths or flies and with a mechanism where you have to press and hold a button to get the water flowing. Not sure how you're meant to shower while you're trying to not let the water stop with one hand. The gym has a lot of outdated gear and the resistance gym is cramped to the max. The female gym changing room is incredibly warm, probably because of the sauna that shares the same space. You need a padlock to use the lockers, which you aren't warned about in advance. I was surprised to find out that there's no direct access from the gym changing rooms to the pool. I'm just assuming it's because the members only use either the gym OR the pool on the same day? Finicky to say the least.
Negative experience: Use to come here as a kid and needed a redurb then. Took my kids and was genuinely shocked that they are allowed to be open! Green everywhere, bodyfat and grit maybe even sand in the actual pool. I use to be a life guard, i know its incredibly boring, but lord almighty they all seem like they were on death row. Couldn't possibly recommend. Some pictures below but they do not do the mess justice.
Fantastic experience: Swimming is clean, cheap, free at certain times for locals. Recommended for everyone.
Positive experience: I visited today to have a sauna which was great. What was strange was that my family was turned down from using the pool because of lessons. It turns out some toddlers were using a small roped off area and 80% of the pool remained unused. If only there was a way to use the rest of the pool and take income in these tough economic times.
Negative experience: Extremely rude staff
Negative experience: !!!! Do not recommend this swimming pool !!!!!, the Male life guarding staff are incredibly rude and condescending towards swimmers and they will shout at you without explanation, and when you try to speak they get defensive and verbally aggressive especially towards women and children . They publicly shame and humiliate swimmers while rudely telling us we have to demonstrate how we swim even when we were just on the shallow end and have ruined the experience for me and my children . I will never step foot in this leisure centre again and I would not even give it a 1 star rating . I’m considering taking further action because we feel discriminated against and we were verbally abused . Especially by the older black life guard .
Fantastic experience: Great place
Positive experience: I like it there only thing is no steam room or suna to sweat off
Negative experience: Has what you need in terms of basics for the gym. The pool unfortunately is a different situation when it comes to cleanliness and maintenance. 1. Many female changing room lockers are broken 2. Only two out of three showers are available, and one shower has a very poorly working water stream 3. It is not very clean (especially the two separate open showers available for a wash down before entering the pool area: dirty curtains, dirty floor) 4. There is a moth infestation. When showering one is surrounded by a colony moths. 5. There is rarely any soap in the soap dispensers , or soap dispensers are not available in the toilet)
Fantastic experience: My experience in Seven Islands Leisure Centre is superb. The Gym is neat and there are excellent facilities there to use. The time spent there is very useful and good.
Fantastic experience: Clean, helpful staff, free sessions for residents of Southwark. Had an assessment for using the gym, readying for a new me
Positive experience: Seven island s leisure centre is a very good place for everyone to come
Negative experience: On my last swimming session life guard was shaving head with electrical head shaver sitting on the guard chair just over pool edge. Is that typical behaviour in any other places? It didn't feel hygienic. Simply gross
Fantastic experience: Clean, warm and well run
Negative experience: Facilities are good, some teachers good, others not so good, reception staff generally rude, but that's what we have in the area.
Positive experience: Nice gym
Negative experience: Scammers. The asked me for more money than it was advertised. I'll have to report to Trading Standards.
Fantastic experience: A nice place to practice your gym routine, you have a spinning class-room and even a dance floor downstairs. The swimming pool is dope.
Fantastic experience: Lovely place, swimming pool 4 metres depth amazing!
Fantastic experience: Got what I needed people very polite and helpful
Positive experience: The hairdryers don't really work and the dressig facility could be cleaner.
Negative experience: Can only comment on the gym, but it's dirty, very cramped and a lot of standard equipment is missing. A number of items area also very old, damaged and/or unsafe. If you're coming for the gym, DON'T.
Fantastic experience: Great place has a good gym
Positive experience: Great pool for length swimming. Good booking system, so the pool is not overcrowded. You need £1 for the changing room lockers, but it doesn't get swallowed every time you open the door so you can use the same coin. My only gripe is: If you are a slow/medium swimmer please do not use the fast lane (the centre should really control this - It's frustrating having to wait or overtake)
Negative experience: Amazing pool staff. However, the facilities are poor and bad management. Here there's an answer of customer service about the poor conditions of the showers. For 2 weeks we haven't got hair dryer. Marcus can assure me that it's healthy to go outside with the long hair wet.
Positive experience: It is a nice pool and it is good for someone who just wants to swim lengths without having any disruptions.
Negative experience: Be aware of criminals operating in in this centre! Criminals who may be members of staff skilfully unlock your padlocks and open your lockers and specifically target your phones and wallets! It has just happened at Seven Islands leasure centre in London and it has been reported to Met police. The management will just tell you that the lockers rooms do not have cctv! No action is being taken by management to tackle this crime! Management should look at the matter seriously and install security cameras to protect your property but they don't, somehow assisting these criminals to hit and hit again!
Fantastic experience: Yes very good experience cooperative staff big pool bit crowded private changing rooms good hygiene
Positive experience: Good
Negative experience: First time in the swimming pool, was very dirty outside the pool, the pool was in very poor condition. Never again.
Fantastic experience: Very nice for swimming
Positive experience: Clean and not crowded. Covid secured environment
Negative experience: Very poor facility. Worst customer service. Dirty toilets, broken equipments. Avoid at any cost.
Positive experience: Clean, poor machine selection
Negative experience: A basic gym - equipment is not always maintained well and a small percentage of people have no gym etiquette.
Fantastic experience: I went swimming a couple of times since the reopening, and I'm impressed with the procedures for safe social distancing. Very good system in the water and around the pool. The staff is friendly and happy to explain the way things work.
Fantastic experience: Spoook
Fantastic experience: It was great and friendly staff and it was all well organised and clean machines.
Positive experience: Seven island leisure centre has a swimming pool and gym it has been renovated and actually is quite nice the pool depth reaches 3.8m at its deepest the gym also is amazing. It is part of everyone active I would recommend checking it out when lockdown eases
Negative experience: The shower area smells of urine ,it was so strong I smelt it while I was swimming. The showers are terrible ,you have to keep pressing the button on the shower as the water stops. There are dead flies on the wall while your showering. It’s very run down. The gym equipment is old ,and broken. Toilets in the swimming area are very dirty, but clean upstairs where the gym is.
Positive experience: Staff at reception don't like to answer the phone. Not particularly clean, or modern (although it is supposed to have been refurbished not too long ago, alas tiles and paint is already falling off walls); but you get what you pay for (it's a ~fiver, walk-in, to use the pool), although it is a subsidised business model... so not really sure.
Negative experience: Gym equipment is out of order for weeks at a time, there's often no wipes to clean the equipment and bathrooms dont even have toilet paper or a seat ! in the ladies changing room...
Negative experience: Honestly, the only good thing about the gym was the amount or space they had. They have now come back and say you can't even use the studio unsupervised (even though the weight room is unsupervised). Weights and equipment is out of date and PTs are mostly overweight and don't look like they have a clue!
Negative experience: Call again and still none reply about the inquiry. Staffs are very demotivated to work, place is pretty dirty
Negative experience: The pool has a stinking reputation, the staff is rude and inadequate. Very poor management, all enquiries are get ignored. Managing company Everyone Active is profoundly incompetent. The swimming pool is a disease carrier, I had two fungal infections and verruca. Around the swimming pool, changing room and facility extremely and totally unhygienic. Dust float on the surface, rubbish objects float along the bottom of the pool. It is not a safe place to spend time.
Negative experience: Swimming pool was closed without any notice 6/8/2019 and around the pool looks like it need a good clean , shower still broken after 1 month , most of staff nice and prolite .
Negative experience: This place look very decadent. Since was taking for the council, all seem to be falling down, staff with no motivation and bad maintenance, so even less well than in the past, and by that the time was manahe by a private company was already bad. Nowadays looks like is being managed by a comunist country in its worst days... Showers are dirty and work badly. This place needs more investment and refurbishment.
Negative experience: People are taking the locker keys home with them so you can never get a locker.
