Our comment from FitFit UK about Nuffield Health Stoke Fitness & Wellbeing Gym:
Nuffield Health Stoke Fitness & Wellbeing Gym in Stoke-On-Trent offers a mix of fitness options that have garnered mixed reviews from its members. On the positive side, many users praise the exceptional classes available, particularly those led by popular trainers like Jon Bentley and Richard Jones. The classes are described as energizing and well-structured, making them a highlight of the gym experience.
Members also appreciate the friendly staff, with special mentions for the helpful receptionist Jane Cotterell. The gym provides a variety of equipment and is noted for its cleanliness in changing areas and showers.
However, it’s essential to highlight areas needing improvement. Several users have pointed out that the gym, especially its equipment, shows signs of aging and lacks investment. Complaints about cold Jacuzzis, inconsistent air conditioning, and the frequent inoperability of machines have surfaced, leading many to feel that the facilities do not justify the membership costs. Additionally, the opening hours received criticism for being too late for early risers.
Furthermore, members express dissatisfaction regarding customer service and the management's lack of responsiveness to feedback. Some have found the pricing structure unfair, as discounted memberships seem to outnumber full-paying members.
In summary, while Nuffield Health Stoke Fitness & Wellbeing Gym offers engaging classes and a friendly environment, members hope for significant investment to revitalize the facilities and improve overall experience.

Nuffield Health Stoke Fitness & Wellbeing Gym: Opinions
Negative experience: Recently left Nuffield. Very little investment over the past 7/8 years. Far too many members on discount rates while the rest of us pay £53. They should charge £75 to everyone and create a premium gym and spa. No point charging £53 for average these days. Also, the fact 2/3 hot tubs are filled with pebbles is simply embarrassing, especially when the one left in use is cold. 6:30 opening time is also too late. Tired, outdated and no usp. Such a shame.
Positive experience: Nuffield Health Stoke has some great classes, particularly those run by PT Jon Bentley, which are energising, challenging, and well-structured. If you like Les Mills classes such as BodyPump, BodyBalance and GRIT, then Jon’s classes are a must! However, the gym itself is badly in need of investment. Equipment, the lack of air conditioning and the sound system in Studio 2 is outdated, broken, and even hazardous, while Studio 1’s barbells are now beginning to fail. Given the state of the facilities, I suspect many members are on discounted rates - paying full price for what’s on offer at Nuffield would be madness! There’s also a £5 charge to bring a baby to the pool, even when both parents are paying members, which feels like daylight robbery. Instructor cover is unreliable too. On more than one occasion, when cover has been promised, there’s been no instructor to cover at all. While the classes (when they happen) are excellent, the gym’s condition and pricing (having had a price increase most recently) make it extremely challenging to justify membership. It’s long overdue mass investment.
Negative experience: Rude reception staff. Her name badge was covered so couldn’t get her name.
Positive experience: Gym is in need of some investment and a refurbishment. The main cardio area with the treadmills etc feels very basic, looks tired and much of the equipment is old. Some of the Watt Bikes don’t have pedal straps now for example. The changing area and showers are good and regularly cleaned, but you can see the person showering next to you through the glass screen which is a bit odd. The swimming pool is a good facility to have but when I last used it, one lane was closed off for private lessons for children and in another lane you had children in the pool with parents throwing around floats etc. It was like trying to swim in WaterWorld. Quite poor considering this is a £60 a month gym. Overall, I would say the gym is definitely not worth £60 a month. Half that and you’d be on the right track.
Negative experience: Dated equipment & decor. Cold Jacuzzi, I Would struggle to stump up £20 a month for this gym, never mind the £60 they want… If you want a proper gym go elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: The classes are really good, hard and fast paced. Everyone is friendly, especially receptionist Jane Cotterell who I had the pleasure to talk to today. She was very helpful and a credit to your gym.
Fantastic experience: The classes are exceptional here. Hard, fast paced. Been going in the morning and everyone is friendly
Negative experience: No money is put back into this gym been a member for a few years and there’s always something not working weather it’s the showers or gym equipment wipes always running out in the gym area old outdated machines and every year price goes up for what?? Used to have 3 jacuzzis now they have one the same temp as the pool. Stopped serving food on Sundays cobs they don’t want to get a chef in to cover maternity leave, the showers just feel and smelll old and grubby even tho I see the cleaner scrubbing them the list goes on. Manager is always sneering at you as you enter the gym when he isn’t messing around with reception staff. The gym trainers and cleaners work so hard with what they have got but whole gym needs a refurb
Fantastic experience: I absolutely love this gym, i've been coming since it was greens. Great classes, staff are lovely.
Negative experience: This gym is in no way worth the money. Price hikes, 2/3 jaccuzzis turned off only one on is cold, pool is cold, steam room and sauna get switched off early and then aren’t warm in the morning, gym equipment is always broken and the rest is outdated. Stay away and get a gym membership somewhere twice as good for half the money
Negative experience: Such a poor quality gym. Equipment is old. Showers are dirty and disgusting. 100% not worth the money they charge.
Negative experience: Been a member for 11 years and my advice would be join another gym if you’re looking for one, I’ll be leaving soon, since reopening after covid the last 4 years have seen a serious decline, paying £53 a month and having to deal with the following: Two jacuzzis out of three permanently closed and filled with stones, boiler breaking down regularly, air con turned off even in hot temperatures, water temperature turned down in pool and showers during winter, steam room and sauna temperatures lowered and turned off 15 minutes earlier than they used to be, gym equipment and spa facilities regularly break and take weeks to fix, and worst of all is the awful attitude of management and a few staff members who constantly badger you to leave as they want to go home before closing time, even sending in a female member of the cleaning team to bellow out her threats to turn off the lights on you.. it seems all people talk about in the gym is how bad the place is and the attitude of the staff, leaving after 11 years due to a complete lack of value for money and poor attitude and lack of any respect from staff who clearly don’t care about their customers.
Negative experience: The swimming pool itself is ok I went there with my mum but they let some kids (ok they were like 18) in who were messing about and almost hit me with a pool noodle and the lifeguards couldnt give a frick about it even tho everyone was angry at the kids
Positive experience: Today I visited Nuffield health Stoke and started a rehabilitation programme for a total hip replacement after private treatment at Nuffield hospital Clayton . Excellent attention to detail from both Tony (Clayton) and today Jamie (Stoke) . Leaving me with a positive level of confidence through a detailed plan , schedule and timescale. I would like to raise one issue , given my condition , height 6’2” and medical requirements at this stage of my rehab . THERE ARE NO HIGH CHAIRS IN THE WAITING AREA. We arrived early due to potential traffic issues and had it not been for the kindness of the patient waiting before me , I would have had to stand on crutches for 30/45 minutes. Given the cost of this PRIVATE TREATMENT I do not think it unreasonable to expect that furniture / seating should be provided to satisfy the needs of patients
Negative experience: Decent gym, but some staff especially management need to be more proactive in caring about the members and not just setting at receptionwith a face, dead atmosphere, not really worth the money you pay. However there are some exceptional staff such as jane and irina. Fix up Nuffield
Negative experience: nuffield has gone downhill in my opinion. back when it was cannons it was a premium gym but little by little its cutting costs and just becoming average gym with premium prices. also little things start to grate, we asked them if they could look on cameras to see if someone dented our car, response: call the police first LOL like they gonna do anything? can i borrow a towel as someone has taken mine from the side of the pool and now i cant dry myself off, response: we dont have ANY spare towels at all I mean its just poor in my opinion i give it 2 stars cause the trainers are nice and the equipment upstairs isnt bad, but yer they need to stop the rot
Fantastic experience: I am going to come to that gym it soo cool from picture
Positive experience: Decent gym, good classes. I wish they'd open the other two Jacuzzis. A major flaw is that I wish they were open an hour earlier (5 am instead of 6:30 am). The staff are friendly. I've been to many gyms, and some people's complaints aren't fair, to be honest. Classes anywhere follow the same process. The app won't reflect true numbers, and that's on other members. It's clean, the staff are friendly, the equipment is decent, and there's decent parking. Barring the opening times, there's not much I can fault.
Negative experience: Something should be done to prevent people booking classes too far in advance. It is near impossible to book on to classes because they are always fully booked and then people don't turn up. The wait list cannot be relied on as today I have turned up to class as I was 5th on the wait list. At least 5 people didn't turn up. Nobody checks the order of the wait list so despite there being 3 people after me on the wait list these people may have walked in to the class leaving me unable to partake. Due to the system anyone that wants to book onto a class has to have a 'if you can't beat them join them' attitude. The classes are the best selling point of this gym so I feel that this is a major flaw
Fantastic experience: Currently a member here and it’s honestly the best gym I’ve joined in a long time great staff, great facilities and great members, it’s everything you want from a gym and I’ve now had my family members join on the back of my recommendation
Positive experience: Gym is ok enough to do a good workout, id liked to have seen a sled push and more handles for lat pull downs also battle ropes. Cardio equipment is very good and new stuff. Swimming pool sauna steam room one jacuzzi. Membership is expensive I’d go mclub at festival park if I was to pay £50 a month
Positive experience: Terminal decline. A certain demographic of members get really cheap rates compared to everyone else since management changed. They're the ones parking in disabled bays and sneering at every other member. Look at the other reviews. It's clear the philosophy now is to hoodwink until signed up then laugh in your face if you expect what you pay for. Shame, the previous managers worked under difficult conditions to maintain and replace equipment (swimming pool boiler/ all cardio machines). Rating a 3 because there are still some decent staff there and parking staff on match days were very professional even when faced with impatient aggression.
Fantastic experience: New spinning bikes are excellent. Classes with Richard Jones are very good.
Negative experience: How an earth are we paying to shower in see through shower cubicles? I’m gobsmacked!
Negative experience: If anyone is thinking of joining Nuffield gym don't bother. I have been there for 12 years and it's unrecognisable to the gym when I first started the Jacuzzis (club saving money) sky sports gone, the bar shuts at 5! The opening hours cut from 22:00 shut at weekends to 20:00. All they care about is money they shut swimming lanes for private lessons so the members are all packed into one lane , the sauna and steam are rubbish. Gym equipment is outdated and broken most time. People park in disabled spots, and use phones in changing room. Nobody speaks up, it's a complete waste of £55. Try JD for £10
Negative experience: If you are thinking of sending your child here for swimming lessons don't bother... The swim instructor is always off 7 or 8 times in the last 3 months we have turned up to be told he isn't in (no phone call or email) and my 6 year old daughter absolutely heartbroken because all she wants to do is swim.
Negative experience: If you're looking for swimming lessons for your child then stay well clear. Had 7 lessons cancelled since March due to instructor availability. Not once being informed of any cancellation untill arriving for a lesson. Absolute jokers
Fantastic experience: Good gym with amazing swimming pool
Negative experience: This gym used to be one of the best in the area but a range of cost cutting measures over the last 12 months now mean I am not able to recommend. Of the 3 jacuzzi’s poolside, 2 out of the the 3 are closed leaving only the cold jacuzzi open which on my visit nobody used as it was too cold to sit in. The thermostat has clearly been turned down on the pool, sauna and steam room as these are no longer as warm as they used to be. Blue roll has been removed from the gym area so you can no longer dry your face after coming off the cardio machines. Changing areas don’t appear to be cleaned as regularly as they used to be and only one water fountain working poolside. The only redeeming feature is a good range of classes and it’s quieter than it used to be so assume this is due to people cancelling their memberships. It’s sad to see this once premium gym slowly being run into the ground.
Negative experience: Increase in membership fee and no hipthrust/glute drive machine at this branch . It’s ridiculous such a “elite” gym doesn’t even have a hipthrust glute drive machine what’s going on? Even the cheap gyms that are £15PM and are budget gyms have the glute drive hip thrusting machine ! It’s such a hassle trying to load and get equipment ready here for hip thrusts compared to JD gym, Fenton manor gym etc that have the hip thrust machine .. management if you’re reading this please get the glute drive ! You’re charging your members so much and are a massive company/chain I’m sure you can afford to invest in members by getting us equipment that all the other local gyms have! It’s so disappointing how much the Nuffield branches vary
Fantastic experience: Amazing gym and staff
Fantastic experience: I absolutely love this gym! My health is improving constantly after a long debilitating illness with Long Covid. One of the Covid Specialist PT's showed me how to use the gym equipment and wrote me a little programme to complete, much appreciated Lexi thank you (organised by the fairly new Manageress Terri, thank you so much ) I've been enjoying swimming (even with the temperature being temporarily on the blink,) I found my swims really refreshing and felt amazing when I finished (been wanting to try cool swims for the health benefits for ages) so I got my chance here and loved how energised I felt! The pool feels practically tropical now the necessary part has been replaced which is a real treat also. I love to use the steam room after a swim. All the staff are wonderful and very friendly. I love the 24/7 App where I can do gentle Yoga classes in the comfort of my own home too, an all round winner! Thank you Nuffield Health Stoke you've been literally life changing for me
Negative experience: Tried this gym with a friend and for what my friend pays (£47) i was gobsmacked. Its certainly not worth its money. The spas closed due to energy crisis but they still charge you the full amount. The pool is FREEZING COLD!. The shower area is awful - See through cubicles without any door locks. You cant even have a shower in piece or shave your private parts if needed. Its an absolute joke!!!
Negative experience: Jacuzzis are turned off in winter and the swimming pool water is cold. On top of that the equipment hasnt been invested in for a long time. Certainly not worth the money. They also have a lady cleaner that just walks into mens changing room.
Negative experience: Thought this gym was OK when I first joined. However they've closed two of the Jacuzzis (the warm ones) and the temp of the pool and sauna (which is tiny) has been reduced, steam room is hit and miss. The only reason I joined this gym was for the added bonus of spa facilities which have now been taken away due to energy price rises yet no other gym in the area has done this, they have also turned off mutiple fitness macines like cross trainers. Also, whenever a Stoke match is on at home the stewards block access to the road leading to the gym. I've left here and joined Shapes in Fenton Manor. Had a £100,000 refurbishment on their gym, have full spa use without cutbacks and all for £33 a month with a saving of £19 a month!!
Negative experience: AN ABSOLUTELY CON GYM. I'M FUMING AFTER BRIKG TOLD THE SPA'S ARE CLOSED DURING THE WINTER HOW PATHETIC. I'M PAYING £47 FOR A SPA GYM THATS CLOSED ITS FACILITIES. I'D RATHER JOIN JD GYMS UNTIL THE SPAS REOPEN. DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM
Negative experience: Paying for a spa gym at close to £40pm and they’re closing the spa facilities. No concern for customers as they have said I have to pay the full amount? Joke
Negative experience: Spa’s closed for winter months (6 months) due to energy crisis. No other fitness centre in Stoke is doing this and Nuffield is more expensive than some who are remaining open.
Fantastic experience: Always good and friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Nice staff. Lots of machines. Swimming area is getting a bit tired. Still good though.
Fantastic experience: Had a great time with the whole family
Negative experience: Don't bother going if Stoke are playing, they sell parking spaces for extra revenue. Some equipment needs replacing. Generally looking very tired for the amount you have to pay....look elsewhere!
Hi John, thanks for the feedback and sorry to read your not enjoying your membership. Fantastic experience: Great gym!
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Fantastic experience: Apa din bazin cam rece, fata de temperatura corpului când iese de la sauna sau jacuzii. Dar foarte bine organizat. Oameni primitor.
Negative experience: Pool is cold. Price rise in mid contract Classes are always full Cafe is overpriced
Fantastic experience: Joined in January, can' t fault it, only issue is some days the sauna/steam can be sometimes not as hot as it has been but most days is fine, plus bonus of free parking on matchdays.
Negative experience: Used to be very good gym now its not that good nothing is working perfectly Early closed on Sunday
Fantastic experience: I joined back in Nuffield this week and I was highly impressed with the new equipment on the gym floor. I highly recommend this health club
Positive experience: If you are under 16 are you allowed to come with an adult?
Hi Lavinia, The club do provide access to the swim areas for under 16's, via the junior membership offering. In order to access our club you will need to be accompanied by a fee paying adult, with the exception of classes at our swim school. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the club on: 01782 692 008 Best regards, Ben On behalf of the Stoke Fitness and Wellbeing club
Negative experience: Zero reinvestment on the gym floor, limited and dated equipment within the weight and cardio areas. The watt bikes of which there are only two are poorly maintained meaning that more often than not you are unable to adjust the bikes to accommodate a suitable ride. There are no other decent bikes in the cardio area , the spin bikes were taken away a long time ago and have yet to be replaced. Recently the watt bikes were both in use so I went into the spin studio and tried three bikes before I found one that was good enough to use, they were squeaking, rusty and generally not fit for purpose. The state of the toilets and sinks is in desperate need of attention, particularly the urinals, the area around them is disgusting, it has been this way for months now. It is frustrating to see management taking prospective members on tours and member numbers increasing when day to day nothing has improved within the gym, it has literally stayed the same for years. There is so much space that could be utilised better with new equipment and both the weights and cardio areas need a radical overhaul. When other local privately owned small gyms can reinvest and make their environments better for members and the national budget gyms are cleaner and more modern, it really is time for the management to make positive change at this gym.
