Fantastic experience: Best gym in London! Look no further - supportive and inclusive culture, plenty of equipment for all fitness goals, countless classes...not to mention awesome wellness space with pool, steam room and sauna. Jordan and the whole team go out of their way to fill this place with a strong community spirit and good vibes all round. The gym has gone from strength to strength and so have all of it's members! Always a great atmosphere here and I can't recommend it enough.

Negative experience: Pool has consistently been closed on a weekly basis for chlorine levels being too high. How can they say they offer a service when they consistently do not offer that said service? Also, definitely makes me question whether the pool is indeed safe given recurrent issues. Additionally, they recently don’t even bother messaging people to give them a heads up that the pool is closed. Can you please do the bare minimum as a service provider? Outrageous given the £120/month cost. Needless to say, would not recommend

Negative experience: Exceptionally rude staff. The worst is someone that works in facilities. He probably didn't realise we heard him say that he is going to kick us out of the sauna at 21.30. This is just not the way to speak or think of customers. I agree with others that the Polish receptionist is rude but the Iranian one is even worse. There seems to be a competition of rudeness here and this is the culture and attitude towards customers. They have even set the clocks in the changing rooms 5 minutes ahead in order to make people leave before closing time. I haven't seen that anywhere else, no other gym or swimming pool that I have been to. At 21.45 we were told that the gym is now closed, even though their website says 22.00. The gym is small and lacks abductor and adductor machine. The sauna is the smallest one I have seen in my whole life and the swimming pool is not safe. There is no lifeguard. Flags for back strokers are missing too. I banged my head against the wall several times. It's just for relaxation, not serious swimming. Unfortunately, the rude staff and lack of safety seem to be consistent at Nuffield Health. Please, read my review about their other club in Barbican. Why work here when you hate it so much?

Positive experience: Good gym, good size pool & friendly staff. Mixed facilities male & female, Sauna & Steam. Clean place but the showers were extremely smelly, need to be cleaned more often.

Positive experience: +: gym + swimming pool + sauna. Price is ok (depending on the discounts / time of purchase), many group classes, nice coaches, equipment is fine -: opening hours are not the best (early close on weekends; swimming pool closed even earlier official closing times); you need your own lock; overall feeling is that some refurbishment of facilities is needed (especially, changing rooms, showers)

Fantastic experience: I took the Long COVID remote rehabilitation course with the amazing and dynamic Wyn Dedewo. He was absolutely brilliant and provided a real life line to me. The free programme is excellent. You receive an 82-page free book calle, “Your Rehabilitation Programme Journal.” There were 20 people in the group. We got a phone call from Wyn every Monday morning for up to 30 minutes to discuss our progress. I felt like I had a free PT. Every Friday at 4 pm we had a zoom exercise session led by Wyn and then had a group check in and chat. We organised a whats app group and this provided a great opportunity for networking. Wyn was very sympathetic and non-judgemental, as anyone with Ling Covid has a very fluctuating energy level. I would highly recommend working with Wyn; he is kind and supportive.

Negative experience: Be careful, this gym is an absolute rip off. First they charge me extra for the price confirmed and when I then tried to exit a rolling contract by providing them a written confirmation, they sent an email to me to try and make me stay which I did not replied to and then they said my account is in arrears because they can't exit my membership by not replying to that email. I have been with them for a few years and can't think of a worse way to sent off a long term customer.

Negative experience: This place made me feel sick. It’s so dirty never seen anything like it. Feaces, hairs anywhere in the place, the steam room I think they never clean it as the drain was so dirty and ok the floor was dirty skin from peope and whatever you leave behind and everyone on the sauna was just sitting without towels and on top of tif the showers were full of hairs and you can smell the dirty. Never seen anything like it. I was shocked I left after 10 mins they should shut it down!! It’s just not normal! The studios and gym looked okay but I didn’t check I feel bad cuz people at receptions are super nice! They deserve better

Negative experience: It saddens me to make this comment. I have come here on and off for over four years through class pass and often brought guests with me. For a non gym member it was £20 to use the gym so whoever would come with me would pay that fee. I have met many people I liked at this gym and I enjoyed going there after work, especially during the pandemic. The receptionist was super nice and we’d often get talking. But today I came in as usual with my ClassPass booking and they refused to give my friend a £20 guest entry. There were very few people in there so no reason to do that but they told me I must be lying because they don’t allow guests. It’s not a nice way to end the week and sadly I think this is the end of my Nuffield Health Islington experience. Won’t be getting a membership or coming through classpass.

Positive experience: I actually managed to get a Free 7 day pass – and thoroughly enjoyed every single trip. The clientele seemed a little older so you didn’t have so many of the leery/creepy guys or the teens breaking every single machine – you just had people who were there to generally look after their fitness. The pool was almost always quiet and more often than not I was swimming alone – which was wonderful! Plus the chlorine content was much lower than I expected – I guess because there are no children allowed – ahh heaven! That being said the weight machines were not that varied – heavy on the arm side of things. As pictured there was a range of free weights along the mirror and there were some kettle bells near the TRX. However when you turn round there is a multitude of bikes and treadmills which takes up most of the space. Overall I really did enjoy the atmosphere, the pool was great, the gym itself left me wanting, so it wasn’t worth the monthly price.

Negative experience: It's absolutely outrageous! Three days without hot water, and they have the audacity to not even provide a timeframe for when it will be fixed? This level of incompetence and disregard for basic amenities is utterly infuriating, tbh. P.s. two weeks without water

Negative experience: This gym has a rather dingy atmosphere, with limited space that might make it feel cramped during busy hours. Unfortunately, the high membership fees don't seem justified given the size and ambiance. Consider exploring other options for a more spacious and reasonably priced fitness experience.

Negative experience: DO NOT GO THERE!!! The receptionist Agata Cazapla is the most racist and rude person Ive ever seen. Couple of days ago I called the place and booked a 3 day free trial for me and 2 of my friends. We wanted to make a membership if we liked the place. On arrival the receptionist changed shifts and Agata Cazapla was on duty then. She told us that we couldn’t go in because of our dark skin colour and looks… This is the first time someone treats us with this disgusting racism… She thought of many ways to send us off… First she told us that the guy we spoke to over the phone is not allowed to give free trials and it is a private space for members only. Second she told us to book a membership to another place which is near my postcode because apparently the system doesn’t allow people that are not local. They had an issue with the system I couldn’t make an account using my phone then i asked her if she could use her computer because her system is registered on the place she works at and it would’ve been easier for all of us. She refused. After couple of tries with a respectful and calm manners we got fed up and decided to leave until the receptionist that speaks Spanish Claudio showed up and he was kind enough and professional to give us the 3 day free trial cards to give it a try and we managed to go in. But this woman personally I do not agree i understand everybody has problems but making assumptions and treating customers rude with racism doesnt show professionalism and I believe my friends will leave a complaint too. We left a review hopefully someone responsible sees it and takes actions because this person has lost me and 2 other people as customers because of Agata Cazapla. They can check the CCTV cameras and if they have audios listen to the conversation… THIS HAPPENED ON THE 05/01/2024 unacceptable this person shouldn’t work there! The place is nice and the stuff members are friendly but Agata Cazapla was nothing like that so unprofessional, selfish and racist behaviour….

Negative experience: My family and myself used to use this gym the pool ,Jacuzzi ,steam room was the best we wanted to return but now I cannot believe the reviews on how it has changed very disappointed to know this is no longer available to use , it should all be put back the way it was

Negative experience: Used to be good. Now very disappointing - high staff turnover affecting services. Rude PT staff - no manners, crass - why are they still there? Duty managers trying their best (much appreciated!), but they are not given sufficient powers to improve situation. Higher up management seem to be ignoring duty managers and customers complaints. Avoid this branch!

Negative experience: Aircon has been broken or turned off / down for months and it is way too hot to work out here. Used to be good, now if it’s even slightly warm it’s way hotter than outside. Wouldn’t recommend

Fantastic experience: Went here to try using ClassPass that my job offered, I really liked it. Clean, not too busy so you can use the machines that are there. Maybe I have not explored enough, but I love using machines so I feel there could be more. But I do love the studios. In comparison to the other gyms in Islington, Puregym is so busy there is no point going. You will not have space to do anything, there is a que everywhere. Virgin Active is so disgustingly filthy, I will never use it again. This to me is the best option in Islington.

Negative experience: Phoned to ask about the day pass. Been clearly told that guest pass is £10 and day pass is £20. Upon arrival reception person asked to wait a bit whilst she called a manager or sth. Manager came (black hair, short lady) said they don’t do day passes anymore. No exclusions or alternatives offered. Unprofessional + disinformation.

Negative experience: Agree with the other reviewers that the gym has gone massively downhill. Changing rooms dirty, spa area closed, machines in the gym turned off and air con never working. It’s ridiculously expensive, with the price increasing regularly, and the members just aren’t listened to. Really frustrating

Negative experience: Initially happy, I cannot recommend this gym anymore. Nuffield Health is on a mission to cut their energy bills so they switch off spa areas, showers etc. They even started switching off many of the machines in the gym area, the air-conditioning is either broken or running at a very low intensity. There is always something that is not working which goes back to energy bills, all while increasing the membership fee every second month. When you file a complaint, they won't do anything about it. I don't feel they appreciate their members but rather treat you as if they were doing you a favour. I have never seen a gym going downhill this quickly.

Negative experience: I have been a member since it opened and have never seen such dissatisfaction amongst members which is almost entirely due to the spa area. My wife and I and many others enjoyed using the spa as a treat after a workout and have got to know many other members using it. I’m suffering from a knee injury and would have really liked to have used it. At my last visit the steam room and poolside shower were out of action, the sauna window was grubby and the closed spa looks a disgrace. We and many others have regularly feed back to management and completed questionnaires. Management have made their mind up and won’t listen. I’m so cross every time I walk past the “we value your feedback “ poster. There has been no attempt to make it accessible in peak hours or turn down the temperature. I’m wondering the added value of the membership in comparison with my local council run gym. . I have really enjoyed the classes over the years but the experience after is very poor. I wanted to have the spa facilities nearby not at Barbican which is not at all convenient for me. I can’t see the rationale in allowing the Barbican spa to remain open and not ours.I hope management can find something me time to come to the Islington Gym and actually speak to members to confirm the above and then change their minds. It’s such a shame and feel so sorry for the wonderful staff their who hear our constant moaning

We do need to confirm that these are also not part of our long-term plans as a fitness provider and will eventually be phased out too. Negative experience: Only joined at the end of February, left my Air pods pros out in the women’s changing room whist I went to use the toilet, came back to one air pod. Wouldn’t recommend one of the cleaners that work there has stolen. Wouldn’t expect this type of thing to happen at this gym. I’ve been told there’s there nothing they can do about even though only 2 staff were on duty at the time.

Negative experience: I bought a 20£ day pass and was denied entry. They claim you need a passport to enter on top of your 20£ daily pass however after providing a pic of passport (despite calling the day before) I was still not provided access to the 20£ daily pass paid for. I felt racial profiled and left the place feeling horrible.I was sent there as a secret shopper and will not be promoting this location in any manner.

Positive experience: Would have given this place a 5star! If it hadn't of been for one recent issue. I regularly pay via hussle £25 to use the pool, steam,sauna and hydro pool/ jaccuzi & my recent visit i used my voucher and entered and was not told the jaccuzi was turned off... This is the main reason I pay and visit. I would have not had a problem if broken or being maintained and closed but I was greeted with a sign that says the rising costs will make the running more unaffordable and it will be off till post winter! Shocking and I'm afraid I won't be back till then.

Positive experience: To prefix my review, I review this as 4 purely because the gym facilities can be better elsewhere but the actual reason for my review is Joy Curati the swim instructor and personal trainer. I could not rate her highly enough. A full 10/10. I started seeing Joy as a non swimmer 2 months ago and my progression has astounded me. I am now proficient in 3 styles and my fitness has never been better. I did 10 hour long lessons and did between 2-4 lessons a week some weeks as I wanted to improve quickly and benefit from the prior lessons as soon as possible and this worked well for me. Joys training style is great. She pays really close attention to how you learn and she then trains you in a rather bespoke way. I feel like she pushes me but doesn’t at all make me do anything that would make me nervous in the water. If you want to learn to swim as an adult either from scratch or improve your swim style and capabilities, Joy would be an incredibly solid shout as a trainer. Plus I’ve heard she is incredible to watch swimming. Haven’t seen it myself yet. Finally, I would add she is a lovely person and a joy to spend the hour with. I’ve really enjoyed the process. Thanks Joy! Looking forward to the next set of lessons and building on the skills you’ve taught me. Also, special shout out to Tracy who is at reception. What a lovely woman. Always remembers your name and so helpful and nice. Nuffield as a group is very lucky to have them both! Jade

Fantastic experience: I'm very happy with this gym. I go pretty much every morning and always have a nice experience. I'd like to give Sophie the Pilates teacher a special mention;. I am coming back to playing sport after a shoulder dislocation I suffered playing sport in August last year and she could not have been more helpful or kind during my first Pilates lesson. Sophie is fantastic teacher and this is not only the first Pilates class of my life but also the first class of any kind I've taken at Nuffield. I will be trying more and return to Pilates on Saturdays as much as I can. A great experience all round!

Fantastic experience: Great clean gym with high-quality equipment. I don’t understand the bad reviews! -Friendly staff -Clean spa facilities, which I love -You never have to wait to use the equipment as the gym never gets too busy -Cleaners on the gym floor constantly sanitise the equipment, especially since the pandemic -Members are middle class and polite. Most people usually clean the equipment after they’re done. They seem to be doing something with their lives. They have a professional and friendly attitude. In some budget gyms, you see the opposite pretty often! -In the reviews, some people are complaining about the price. I prefer to pay less like everyone else, but I don’t mind what they're charging, considering how clean the gym is and also the club never gets too busy. In my opinion, it is an excellent place to work out and then chill in the spa to finish off your day.

Negative experience: Apr2024 Update: Left Nuffield as they stopped majority of the hydro spas which was one of my important go to’s to help with my health and fitness. ************ Original review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Previously been a Fitness First member through work, I have to say Nuffield is quite good and have the facilities I need. The people/members who come to this gym seems a lot more friendly and easier to chat to than the ones in city, which makes it a more pleasant visit. Staff have generally been helpful with questions and requests. Were happy to show how some equipments work when needed. Classes, swimming pool, various equipment to cross train and showers. I prefer the shower gel and conditioner here in comparison to the city branch Steam room was not working as well as it does now for first week or so, glad they’ve fixed it. I generally enjoy the classes I’ve been to also like that they say if there’s no class then feel free to use the rooms. With the price it’s worth it, especially when it’s a connection site, the lower price gyms I find a little less clean in comparison to here! Keep up the good work and vibes guys!

Negative experience: I requested a pause on my membership in July and received an email confirmation that my membership would be paused. Nuffield then took payment anyway. I emailed Aaron Okoro, the manager, and he replied asking me to forward him more information. I did this, and also sent a follow up email asking about pausing and cancellation due to the poor service, but he never bothered to get back to me. Now another payment has been taken for September. This is ridiculous, there is such a fast turnover of staff there I've no idea who else to contact.

Negative experience: What an awful gym, extremely overpriced, boring equipment and the layout of the gym is not good. There is no vibe or feel or music in the gym and the trainers just seem to hang around not doing much at all most of the time I’m there they look terribly bored and probably underpaid. There’s always different staff every week, different trainers and different receptionists, they try to act like they are above budget gyms and charging over 110£ a month for membership but it’s actually worse! Really dirty horrible changing rooms (I’ve seen maggots come out from the drains while showering multiple times!!) I never felt like I was getting any value for money here when you can get much better service and better feel in any other gym near by, def look around for other places!!

Negative experience: Twilight zone gym. Very quiet and good equipment, unfortunately the sales team is fairly incompetent - that is when you manage to get through as most emails get unanswered and good luck getting through the phone. This branch is a very different experience compared to what you get in the other Nuffield branches around the city so very puzzling. It feels as close as you are going to get to a state owned Soviet-era corporation. The fact that they are apparently a "charity" (hard to believe with £100 monthly fees) might explains it - they clearly made me understand they didn't need my money, so ended up going elsewhere.

Positive experience: Have been a member here for over a year. I loved the gym before, albeit some machines were outdated but overall still had everything I needed. The new gym floor looks and is amazing! I do however have a big complaint- they took out the hip abductor & thigh adductor weight machines, and have no intention of replacing them. Basically, the machines that mostly women use. They are my favourite machines and have been for years. Nuffield Angel, advised I do an exercise with bands, but in no way does it do the same thing. Those machines isolate muscles- and allow someone to add extremely heavy/light weights to isolate a particular muscle or muscle group, without having to engage the whole legs. It's a bit disappointing they took these two machines out- some gyms have this machine as a 2 in 1 machine, so it is possible to reduce the amount of room they take up. My other complaint is the jacuzzi often runs warm, not cold, not hot but warm- which can be a bit annoying but the sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and pool are amazing! I love the facilities they have. Overall, it is a great gym- I would highly recommend it.

Positive experience: Signed up for a day pass to try this gym out... unfortunately nowhere on the Nuffield site mentioned the main gym was closed! Small area was available with a couple bikes, rowing machine, kettle bells and mats. The pool was good.

Negative experience: The club got better than worse. The pool side shower has been broken for months and nothing is done. As mentioned previously. ThHe club has gone down hill. I have been a member since this was Esporta, then Virgin Active and now Nuffield. The changing rooms are poorly maintained, the dryer often out of order. The junior staff are nice and the pool is good.

Positive experience: Pluses: Staff are friendly and helpful, has a pool, gym, steam room, gym, all fine, etc. Negatives: As a member for years under Virgin, the best comparison is that with Nuffield Health you feel like you’re flying Ryanair at Virgin Atlantic prices. Out went the good coffee machine, in went the vending and, crucially (and why I decided to even post a review), a militant approach to towels - one towel a customer to the point that only one towel is left out by staff to take. This is for a gym with a pool, steam room and sauna. Towels are pretty essential. NH states that this is for environmental reasons, you can make up your own mind. And all for a membership that costs the same as Virgin.

Negative experience: I have been a member of Nuffield health fitness in Nuneaton before and I have been quite happy with their facilities and the package they offer and this is why I decided to trial out this branch on 27 Essex road, London as I was thinking about being a member again. I wasn't allowed to use my trial pass! I wouldnt recommend this particular branch as they have different set of rules for non-white people. I felt discriminated against!

Negative experience: Great facilities but lots of big buts. I struggled in, through the door as it wasn't clearly signed how to open it. A person who was coming out, a member I assumed, looked at me as it I was stupid. Once in the receptionist was really nice, had a trial for the day. I got complimentary towels but nobody showed me around. I was given basic directions, changed and went to the main gym. I tried to use a treadmill and found myself not knowing how to stop it... I asked for help and the member of staff looked at me but didn't come to help me or acknowledged me. I asked somebody else if anybody could show me how to use the machines and said I had to make an app. It was a one day trial. Seriously?! After not much decided to shower and go. Nice changing rooms. Won't come back. Is impersonal and overly priced.

Negative experience: This Nuffield centre is a bit behind compared to the other centres i've recently been to. Men's changing rooms need refurbishing, floods, dirty steam room, old gym equipment. The centre has a lot of teething problems too. Centre Manager Jo is more interested to work in the gym rather than her office constantly in and out the gym is horrendous to say the least.. The trainers here are basically useless and not good at all. They don't want to help you at all but just stare at you. The price is outrageous and they are only interested in profit and makes no sense when Nuffield is a charity. Don't waste your money in here. The sales manager Mark is also useless and he could do with taking out a gym membership himself before he tries selling you a deal! This franchise is only for the rich people to benefit from, whereas the poor people don't stand a chance to get a membership here at Nuffield Islington. Discrimination! try charging people £10 a month- that might work. This place can go to hell because the Mark guy is simply throwing his weight about and trying to make a quick sale when he knows nothing about fitness. See that’s the thing. All these gym franchise chains they employ people who have zero knowledge about health and fitness but more interested to make profit- literally from your blood and sweat. I recommend running in the park 2-3 times a week. It is free and better than a treadmill. And you will lose weight and shape up better by running outdoors

Fantastic experience: Gym is busy enough for a good atmosphere but not so busy that u can't work out on what u want. I really like all the personal trainers, especially Adriana Lima who takes great classes always.

Positive experience: Clean and not busy. Excellent yoga teachers. The heating had been broken in the main studio for months while they wait for a part. Not good enough.

Positive experience: I recently visited this gym for the first time with a Free Guest pass. I have to say it was very impressive from the old gym that I used to go to (run by Better). I did not attend this Gym attend it used to be run by Virgin Active Gym before the takeover, which still has their sign post up on the main entrance, that has not been removed for some unknown reason. A bit hidden and tucked away from the public view as I did not know that it had existed until I was recommended by a friend. The general culture, environment operating in this health/fitness facility is of a calm and measured one . The place is very clean and very well presented with the decor. Free Tea and coffee is available, self-service at the seating area by Reception. However the gym itself does look a bit dull and could do with renovating. The treadmills could do with an update to the latest Technogym treadmill which are alot thinner. A quiet and warm gym environment which is what you want in a strenuous workout without prying eyes gazing on your treadmill stats!! The sauna was amazing, very pleasant and not too hot, but just the right temperature. Sun loungers by the pool to relax are luxury with cushions that soak the water from your skin which is clever. The steam room was not that good and a bit disappointing as there was a lack of steam in there. The only con I have about the health suite is that it is located by the pool and should be located in a separate area, and this does not give you any privacy if you just want to use the Health Suite and not the Swimming pool. The lobby leading to the changing rooms, and changing rooms are the main highlights of this fitness venue. You get to see the view of the pool as you walk down the corridor to the changing room which is very classy indeed. The changing rooms are very clean and tidy with towels provided in lockers. Reminded me of a luxury hotel. Very comfy cushions. This has to be the cleanest gym that I have ever been to. The showers are problematic as the shower head is not well placed imo, and not enough water pressure. Make sure you bring your own padlock for the lockers. However only downside that I have is the price. Nuffield is a registered charity and is therefore charging an absolute fortune from members as compared to its competitor Better. It is very sad that Nuffield does not take into account people who are unemployed and in receipt of Disability benefits who simply cannot afford to pay £100 per month for gym membership. No parking facilities either. These were the only let downs here. Otherwise it would get 5 stars, hands down.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic facilities... but the classes are always overbooked. You'd expect with such a premium price that you could book a class with a few days notice... but Body Pump gets booked out a week in advance! The pool, sauna, showers, and changing rooms are all spotless.

Negative experience: At the time of great customer service as mantra in many dynamic companies, at Virgin Active, don't expect a great customer experience if anything goes wrong. I don't know if this brand is still in Mr. Branson's portofolio, if it is, he should probably spend some time to improve the company's culture instead of writing "inspirational" advices on social media which are far away from the ground reality in his very own companies!

Positive experience: Gym is clean and tidy. The only let down is weights area. It's really small with only 2 benches in the dumbbell zone and my advice to the management is: please replace the dumbbells, they are too wide, made of this cheap plastic and awfully inconvenient to grip. Get those standard rubber ones that every gym in this country uses please! Thank you!

Positive experience: Great club, good equipment, never done classes but swim and lot and it's pretty perfect in terms of having everything you need in one place. Think it gets busy on the weekends around 10. For weekdays it's perfect.

Positive experience: This is my home gym, Its very clean and well organised. but suffers from being too full most hours of the day. also they could do with a few more free weights, but all in all its good

Negative experience: I am sad to say that, this is my home club and I am now considering leaving. I had two guest passes and the date ran out by a few days, a simple oversight!! I ended up arguing with the operations manager because I had invited a colleague and I was told it was basically to bad! Customer service was missing today, in fact it was terrible!

Negative experience: Big disappointing! This was my home club. The sales(Adam) said he will send emails to us to register online and we can booking classes online. Before we join this club, he said we will get 5 guest passes each. Since we joined it, we never receive any emails. We had asked the reception a couple times. Nobody help us to claim even they said they will:(

Positive experience: I have been visiting for over 3 years and the staff are great, classes are varied and equipment is well maintained. There is a nice pool and the changing rooms are clean and tidy. Like all gums if is better if you can go between 9.30am - 5.00pm.

Fantastic experience: Virgin Active Essex Road for me is the best gym in the Angel Islington area. Why it is smaller then its neighbouring Virgin Active club at Angel tube station, it is a lot less busy. The staff are extremely friendly the club is spotless, it even has free tea and coffee!! Love it!!
