Palace Hotel Buxton offers a grand and historic atmosphere while being conveniently located near the beautiful town of Buxton and its attractions. Many guests appreciate the stunning architecture and elegant common areas, which create a lovely first impression. The staff is often noted for their friendliness and willingness to help, significantly enhancing the overall experience.

Overall, while Palace Hotel Buxton has the potential to deliver a truly memorable experience, guests hope for improvements in service and room conditions.

Palace Hotel Buxton: Opinions

3.5/5 (198 Opinions)

Negative experience: Hotel staff were lovely, service was fab food was delicious couldn't fault them. Leisure staff was very abrupt and clearly didn't want to be there. As for the hotel, extremely run down in desperate need of some TLC, holes in walls and floor in the spa changing rooms, pool needs a good clean, corridors look like they haven't been hoovered in a long time, dust on curtains and cobwebs on the ceiling in room. Room was small and basic, a travel lodge or premier inn would have been cleaner and much bigger. Got a room with a view of a broken roof and some bins, not great considering the beautiful location the hotel is in. The location was great for our needs however won't be in a rush to go back due to how rundown and unclean the hotel is.

Positive experience: Great location, public areas of hotel once were very impressive and still give off an air off what it could be, however the bedrooms were disappointing. Having asked to be moved from a double room due to it being 2 squeaky singles pushed together, we were rewarded with a much smaller room with the smallest double bed and windows that were painted shut. Very disappointed

Mike Last 6 months ago

Positive experience: All a bit tired, the first room the lady at the desk sorted us out( was a very slow process, silently tapping away at her screen amost unaware we were still in the room) was not a double, it was 2 squeaky singles pushed together, with a ridge in the middle, not even zipped together. Asked for a double, got changed to the world's smallest double bed in a tiny room was too disenchanted to complain again, did not eat here but was really central and an easy if hilly, walk to town.

Fantastic experience: It is such a lovely hotel. All staff were friendly. Only slight disappointment was after the show at the opera house we would have loved a snack to eat but there was nothing they could offer us.

Negative experience: Room ok but not value for money. shower very small and difficult to access with door that did not close properly causing water to spread across floor then no cleaning/replenishment and no new/extra bath towels available. On positive side, staff and restaurant excellent.

Fantastic experience: Warm welcome and ideal location Friendly, efficient and helpful staff. Very comfortable room Brilliant location and 5 mins walk away from the very beautiful Buxton Opera House and the centre of town. On site parking at a very reasonable price compared to parking in the town centre.

Positive experience: This is a lovely hotel. The building is grand and graceful with beautiful views and gardens. The staff are friendly and courteous. The room I was in was huge for just one person. There was one small issue with the placement of the toilet. It is not possible to sit on the toilet because it is wedged tightly between the grand bath and the wall of the en suite. Other than this, the room I stayed in was nice. The Spa was fantastic. My great niece had a wonderful time leaping into the warm pool and learning to swim. The steam room and sauna were nice. It was a lovely end to a long day on stage at the nearby Opera House. The bar was comfortable and the bar staff were great.

Fantastic experience: We went off season and got good deals on the basic double bedrooms. Clean and tidy Lovely staff but check-in was very slow. The pool was too cold to go into in my opinion and you need to book in advance for Spa treatments. The Hotel is a great location to explore Buxton. Beautiful old building and the breakfast was very good too for a reasonable price

Fantastic experience: Amazing experience and a lovely getaway. We had the double executive room 219 it was very spacious and the bed was so comfortable! The atmosphere and aesthetic was calming and simply stunning. Brilliant location with many restaurants and bars just outside your door, couldn’t have asked for a better stay. Would 100% recommend ☺️

Fantastic experience: We like stopping at the hotel rooms are clean little old fashioned , tried breakfast this time wasn’t that good will not have it again , location is key for the town and theatre, will stop again

Fantastic experience: For the money spent on a standard double room, this was a fantastic hotel. Professional and friendly staff, opulent communal areas, lovely simple warm room with 15' ceilings, large refurbished bathroom with a decent shower and a nice firm bed. Drinks were OK priced, I didn't try the food. I've stayed at Britannias before so I had rather low expectations, but the Palace Hotel was wonderful and I highly recommend.

Sue Willison 6 months ago

Negative experience: We did book at a cheaper price , I guess the old saying you get what you pay for is rather prescient. We were in room 16 downstairs in what appeared to be the lowest level of the hotel . Windows were frosted over so no view at all and very draughty in the wind . It was cold but turning the radiator on meant a constant noise like a gas jet hissing loudly. The room was small and basic . It was up 2 steps to the small bathroom with shower over the bath . Plastic cups in the bathroom too . The bed was comfortable but the pillow was very hard . On our second day the room began to smell like sewage from all the rain. In the main hotel it was warm and pleasant, the check in staff were friendly. We would return but never to a budget room

Positive experience: The location and beauty of this building is the selling point alone, yes the rooms are a bit small but I think it adds a cottage like feel.... it can be busy at peak times, but everywhere is like that nowadays... We didn't try and food or drink, so cannot comment however we tried the "leisure centre" and the guy running that place seemed uptight, rude and a bit like he didn't want to be there, which i understand people have bad days at their work but when you're trying to sell a 'leisure centre' last thing you want is an awkward centre. The pool had a smell coming from it i could only compare to a homeless person's gaps between their toes. The gym was adequate for what I needed it for but still very poor for the price tag of £6 per person for a day. I'd recommend this place but I'd probably just do some push ups on the floor in your room and run a luke warm bath and pretend your in a pool.

Positive experience: Centrally located, good value for money hotel The location and beauty of the hotel is amazing. They have adequate parking, the room is a little compact but has TV, very good heating and amenities like Iron, hair dryer, adequate tea and coffee, and a supplementary electric heater. Washroom's hot tub and water pressure were nice. The room was compact and small, the washroom was disproportionately cold and reviews of the pool were bad - so we did not visit.

Negative experience: Took 20 mins to book in. There was an event in the hotel so gave the benefit of the doubt. When to restaurant, fully booked. 10munutes later watched the waiter tell someone they would squeeze them in. OK! Ordered bar food after being told it was available from 8pm. 40 minutes later went to check on food only to be told we wouldn't be getting it as they were rushed off their feet!!!!! Do not visit this hotel.

Negative experience: Even as a guest they still try charge you to use the gym and other facilities. The gym is tiny and not worth 2 pound never mind 6. I go to a full size real gym back home and pay 3 pound a day 10 a week. What a joke when I work away 5 days a week pay a fortune to sleep somewhere for the night and can't even train for free..

Fantastic experience: Excellent stay (again!). Staff are all really friendly and helpful. We came in at the end of an incident at the bar on Monday 10th Feb - group of contractors we're starting to play up because they wanted more drinks when the bar had closed. We'd seen the same contractors earlier in a PH, very rowdy! From what we could see the young lady serving at the bar got the backlash - they were very rude and completely inappropriate. He said he was going to make a formal complaint against her! The young lady behaved completely professionally and we were very pleased to see the hotel took this seriously and called the police - 10/10. Didn't mar our stay at all and we will be back!

Positive experience: Me and my partner stayed in double executive room 222, the room was lovely with spacious accommodation and offering a brand-new bathroom. The only drawback was the bed. The bed needs a new mattress because this one is passed it's sell by date. The staff are lovely and thanks to Jude who checked us out. We stayed Saturday night so breakfast was very busy on Sunday morning to be expected really but the breakfast was very nice. We thought that the building was lovely and full of character looking down on the rest of the town. We will definitely come back.

Positive experience: I did really enjoy my stay. However… this place really didn’t merit being a 4* hotel for me. Lounges were nice and rooms were cozy, but not made up daily. I had to request from housekeeping directly for my room to be cleaned, as reception hadn’t passed on the message. It was odd that there was a distinct lack of plug sockets in my room, with none by the bed for phone and other devices. All in all, an enjoyable stay in a lovely old building, but service just needs a little boost to meet 4* in my eyes.

Positive experience: My husband and I stayed at the Palace Hotel in Buxton to celebrate his 50th. I booked online through Groupon, and the deal was a standard double room, with three course meal for both, breakfast for both, and full use of the leisure facilities, all for £129! Awesome. There is parking on site, and we had no problem getting a space. It is £5 for 24 hours, and you book your vehicle at the reception desk. The reception desk staff were lovely, and the check-in process was simple and informative. A pleasant surprise was when we were upgraded for free due to the celebration. We were given an executive suite. Wonderful. The room was very impressive, and we were very happy with it. Disappointingly, the ensuite bathroom, although all in good working order and pleasant looking, it wasn't in keeping with the rest of the hotel. It looked cheap and let the room down. It was clean, though, and the small samples of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc, were handy and smelt lovely. We booked a table in the restaurant via the reception staff. The food was a set menu with four different choices for a starter, main, and dessert. I had the carrot and coriander soup, sweet potato curry, and sticky toffee pudding. My husband had pate, haddock, and gateaux. The food was very hot, always a good thing. The plates were presented nicely and tasted ok. The service was a little less desirable. Some of the staff were very young and it was difficult to communicate well and take orders and give good service. One male waiter referred to my husband as 'pal'. The restaurant, although set in a lovely area of the hotel, seemed like a squashed cafe set up. All the tables were too close together and there was no ambience. My husband and I were expecting it to be romantic, but due to the setup and other guests turning up in tracksuits, it let the evening down, hence the three and four stars in that area. The service from the bar man after we had eaten was less than desirable. He left us standing at the bar and continued to clean glasses whilst we were waiting to be served. When we were served, my husbands glass had a lipstick mark on the rim, and we had to ask him to change it. The irony! He did, with no issues. We sat in the foyer area with our drinks, it is beautiful, and listened to the piano player. He was playing random songs and taking requests from guests. We did try to participate, but he mustn't have liked our suggestions, which weren't obscure. He was quite rude and abrupt towards my husband and seemed like a 'grumpy old man'. Again, it let the evening down. We went back to our room to enjoy the rest of the evening. Breakfast was anytime between 8am to 1030am. We attended at 930am, to check out before 11am. The breakfast had a lot of choice and was nice. Again, the tables were cramped together, and it was busy. There was a long queue for the tea and coffee machines. The most annoying part of the breakfast was the size of the cups! They were that small, when you stirred your drink, it all came over the top, and I couldn't even fit my finger through the handle hole to hold it properly. Larger mugs would be much better. All in all, although I have mentioned a few niggles we experienced throughout our stay, it hasn't put me off, and I would stay there again. The hotel is stunning and perfect for just walking into Buxton to have a look at the local shops, bars, and restaurants.

Fantastic experience: Firstly I would like to thank Suzanna on reception she was very helpful and exceptionally welcoming. The room we stayed in was snug and cozy it was clean and the bed very very comfortable. The bar is a little pricy but over all very nice. Thank you

Negative experience: The hotel itself looks grand and impressive from the grounds and structure, inside the reception and bar area are well kept and clean. The staff were friendly enough, apart from one breakfast server who was swearing alot under his breath. We used a gifted voucher for this nights stay, we did pay more to upgrade our room and were left extremely disappointed. The room was cold, was very low ceilings and sat above the hotels extractor fans leaving a loud hum throughout the night. The radiators would flush water through during the night extremely loudly so much so it woke me 3 times. The mattress was really hard. Only one pillow per person, one towel in the bathroom. Kent water in buxton?! Why? The breakfast was standard however the orange juice was more what you'd expect at a kids birthday party and the coffee fresh out of the toilet. It was a trek just to find the room and no in room phones so unable to contact reception unless I had a map to find my way back down. Overall I would not recommend this hotel, it was not the luxury stay as promised, More of a faulty towers type.

Negative experience: Beware everyone! Our Gala New Year experience was ruined. Along with 3 other couples, we were not on the list for the New Year Gala Dinner. Bearing in mind that we had already sent in our menu choices. All the other people already seated had to wait for their meals. Eventually, we were all relocated to another room and a version of the meal served about an hour late. There were then 2 coach parties trying to come in for the entertainment before we had finished eating. The long-suffering staff were amazing but obviously taken for granted. 3 great breakfasts 2 other mediocre evening meals. The electronic board in reception was still displaying the itinerary for Christmas! It had not changed when we left. Lovely decor in the hotel. A very comfortable, clean room. Since returning home, senior management has not seen fit to converse with us properly. Altogether, it is very unsatisfactory. Please do take care and don't be another victim.

Negative experience: We decided to stay at the Palace as attended an event at the theatre which is only a short walk. When the concert finished at 10pm due to the pub next to the theatre being closed we decided to go back and have a last drink at the hotel bar as the information sheet in our room had said it didn't close till 11pm. 6 other couples who had attended the concert had the same idea but when went into the bar area we were told that it was closed and would not be serving. Very dissappointing and at a cost to them as most of us then walked it back into the town for a drink. Although there were 2 people on reception at check in a queue seemed to form as you have to not only fill in a form you also have to fill on screen tablet to register your car and it took them an effort to even look at you. Overall the room was clean, although very tired, the bathroom towels were old, i had to make the bed as bottom sheet had not been tucked and there was a lot of furniture for a smallish room. Breakfast was all self-service, including lukewarm coffee from a machine like weatherspoons, orange juice from a machine that added water to some sort of disgusting concentrate and the hot food was very dried up. I worked at the Palace in the late 90's and lived in the staff block. It was place you were proud to work and the level of hospitality was high, you wouldnt even imagine turning paying guests away from having a drink and they certainly didnt have to toast thier own bread at breakfast. Its sad to see it moving into a budget hotel where the building is being left to deteriorate.

Negative experience: I had to go home to get some sleep!!! Let me explain... I booked a standard double room at the Palace Hotel for one night in January. It cost something like £59, with a further £5 charge for parking and £6 to use the leisure complex (see below). On arrival to the hotel, it looked quite nice. It is certainly a grand building, in lovely grounds. The location is central, and convenient for exploring Buxton and the surrounding area. Check-in was quick, though the queues at reception later on did make me glad I got there early! The first thing I noticed about my room (134) was the temperature. It was absolutely sweltering. I turned the radiator off and opened the window, but it was still ridiculously hot. It was also noisy. The room looked out over the kitchen (?)/boiler room (?) roof, where the vents made it sound quite literally as though a freight train was constantly rumbling by! Although there was a wardrobe and a very decent amount of drawers, there was nowhere to hang my coat, except inside the bathroom door. Then, the bed. I like a hard mattress, but this was something else. It is so firm, that if you tap it, it sounds like a drum. I decided to head over to the leisure complex, only to find that the pool was only at 18° and so not really usable. To be fair, the man on the reception there did drop the entry fee to £3 because of this. That seemed a fair price to spend a while in the sauna. Except, the tiny sauna absolutely reeked of urine. There was also a large gap at the bottom of the sauna door, meaning it just didn't get up to temperature, and I had to lift my feet up to the bench as floor level was too cold! The steam room was slightly better. Trying to get to sleep later on was ridiculous. The noise from outside didn't stop at all, and it was still far too hot to close the window. I ended up checking out in the early hours and have requested a refund. It's a shame, as the hotel could be lovely. The room was spotlessly clean, the downstairs looked lovely (lots of plush sofas everywhere) and I can imagine it is a lovely venue for events. Not so great if you want a good night's sleep though!

Negative experience: We were 2 couples traveling for. Spa break, Booked the hotel specifically for the Spa facilities. We were upgraded on the rooms. One was brilliant, one was poor and totally different. We booked together so why weren’t they the same. Hotel said it’s because Expedia didn’t tell them it was a joint booking. When to the spa. No treatments available. However they did fit in the 2 ladies. Pool was 17c so very cold and not really usable. Pools normally 26-28c. (We were given no prior notice of this) No hot tub as advertised. Hotel blamed Expedia for this being advertised. Also said they charge £6 per day for Spa use. This was not advertised on Expedia. They are in charge of what Expedia advertise so should have been checking this. Rooms at night like very hot like saunas. Hotel said they couldn’t control this but we could turn down temp in rooms. We did this but it was still hot even with windows open. Heat was coming from hotel somewhere else. We made the most of our time there by changing our Spa day and going off the day. We were looking forward to using the spa facilities and treatments. Only one of us had a treatment the other cancelled as felt that because she couldn’t use the facilities it wasn’t worth doing. Spoke to the operations manager Regan on leaving with these points and others and he wrote them down and I asked for feedback on why we experienced this. As of writing this 4 days after I have no callback. I even chased and a person was going to send him a message and still no reply. It seems the management don’t care about issues here. To add to it all they allow dogs of which I don’t mind but one decided to cock it’s leg up on the stair post in reception and a member of staff saw it and turned around and walked away, I assume so they wouldn’t have confrontation. Poor, poor, poor, and all this totally spoilt our trip away that was supposed to be a Spa break.

Negative experience: Our experience was disappointing and did not meet our expectations for the New Year celebration. The steak and chicken we ordered were served cold and lacked flavor. Additionally, despite requesting sauce, our waiter did not return to assist us and later mentioned he was unable to locate it. We had originally booked three nights but chose to depart after the second night, which was New Year's Eve. Unfortunately, the house manager did not offer any support to address our concerns. Based on this experience, we cannot recommend this establishment.

Negative experience: Booked for 27,28 Dec. The check in took almost 2 hours waiting in line as only 2 people working in reception and 1 was going in office all the time so basically 1. The room was tiny, for a double bedroom, nothing like the photos online, we couldnt turn down the heating and the window could open only 1 inch. Bathroom straight from 1980, with no renovation since then. Reporting in the reception had no effect as they didnt care. We asked if there is another option even with extra money so we can upgrate, they replied we have to ask next morning, as fully booked. We had to sleep with the fan on, but still it was worst sleep in a hotel ever. We had to exit the room 3 times during the night just to breath fresh air. I dont know how it is legal to rent hotel rooms like that one. Breakfast very average with broken coffee machine. If you ask for bottled water in the bar, they serve Harrogate water... in Buxton!!! We asked for a refund next day and cancellation of the second night, as we wouldnt stay in second room, and they refused upgrade or refund since we booked through Booking. Luckily, Best Western up the street had a room available with professional staff, and wonderful room, so we slept the second night in a decent hotel. Never again Palace Hotel Buxton, never again!

Negative experience: On arrival April 2024, disabled elderly parents (90's) accessible room was on an upper floor with a shower over a bath, then offered a room with a very small bathroom that had a 12 inch plus step into the shower, and a schorching hot radiator against the toilet, eventually, after one nights stay, they were moved to a fully accessible room on the ground floor. We chose The Palace Hotel over other hotels in your chain as we had a 14 year old in our group and this was the only one where he was allowed acces to the pool and leisure facilities. However on arrival the pool was not available for use until the last evening of our stay and even then it was so cold we only stayed in it for a very short length of time, and the steam and sauna facilities were shameful, I have used beter facilities in private homes. The food in the restaurant was not the best with very little to no choice for the vegetarians, basically a different fish each night, the description of the food was sometimes misleading and the quality was very variable ranging from very poor to extremely good. I was under the impression we would be able to eat off the main menu as long as we stuck within the £30 budget but when I asked about a dish not off the set menu I was told we had to eat from the set menu.On the flipside we cannot fault the day staff for their friendliness always a smile on their faces. One of the main reasons we booked this hotel was for the facilities but in hindsight we would have been better off in a Premier inn! Despite numerous phone calls and letters to both the hotel and head office over the last 9 months we have had no replies, other than when we called we were told somebody would get back to us. WILL NEVER BOOK A BRITANNIA HOTEL EVER AGAIN

Fantastic experience: Grand place. Just refurbished. Plenty sofas and chairs in the lounge. Food good but lacked choice. Staff very good and attentive. Pool good but chlorine levels low so missed a swim. Sauna and steam room good. Great location over looking the town. Had a great twixmas break.

Positive experience: The building is beautiful and the room was also nice. However, we were surprised not to have any room service during a 4 nights stay, not even the bins had been emptied. The pool was out of order, the gym was ok even if a little shabby. Can't say anything about the sauna as we didn't use it.

Positive experience: My partner and I stayed here as part of a group at an incredibly good value price, equivalent to less than £50 per person per night for dinner, bed and breakfast! At that price, I can forgive a lot – and there were quite a few things to forgive – and recommend the impressive and well-maintained building with the best location in Buxton, minutes from the station and main ‘sights’, the generally very friendly staff, the comfortable bedroom with good lighting, a bathroom that had a deep bath with plenty of hot water, good toilet paper, but a mouldy ceiling, and sufficient average, unexceptional, buffet food. Although I had told them in advance of the three food ingredients that I must not eat, and reminded them at reception on the first morning, nothing was done to cater for me. The server at the buffet was able to find out what items I could eat, which was a very limited choice. Wi-Fi and parking were free for us. The things to forgive included - a barman who shouldn’t be in a customer-facing role (a view shared by multiple people in our group and one lady I didn’t know) - a bar whose only zero/low alcohol product was Heineken (no cider, Guinness zero, or a zero ale) and which had apparently run out of lemons - a bedroom with a wardrobe for hanging clothes but very little drawer space - poor cleaning in corners and edges of public rooms and bedrooms (the photo shows a corner of the lift with accumulated dirt and litter) - an open bedside unit that was thick with dust at the back, as I discovered when removing my clothes - tiny cups for hot drinks at breakfast, these overflowed when filling with the automatic hot water dispenser even when the 'half cup' button was pressed. A lady guest was scalded because of this. - no real decaff coffee or granola at breakfast - they had also run out of lemons, so I couldn't have tea with lemon - the orange juice was thin and unpleasant, perhaps it had sat in the machine for too long - most of the fruit at breakfast was tinned and no fruit salad or fresh fruit available for dessert in the evenings - no choice of breakfast eggs (only fried) - disabled parking too far from the ramped entrance. There was only one usable single power socket in the room, far from the bed, resulting in a great deal of swapping kettle, hairdryer, and chargeable electronics like mobile phones, tablets, hearing aids! The TV had a limited selection of terrestrial channels eg no al-Jazeera. There was no phone to call reception or to ring friends in other rooms. The room was cold on arrival, the radiator being turned off when outside temperatures were just above zero. Hardly welcoming. The hotel had run out of towels for the pool, which meant we didn’t use this facility. They don’t supply bathmats! The library room had few books, but there were sets of Monopoly, Scrabble and cards. This room and the lounge were comfortable.

Negative experience: From the start our Christmas break was a disaster. After explaining when we booked months before, that we would probably be a day late in arriving. Then three weeks before our stay I rang again to confirm we would be a day late in arriving. On arrival we were told our booking was cancelled. Rather than sort the problem there and then we were told to come back later. we not offered apologies and felt very let down. The stay continued to spiral downwards. Dirty tables full of glasses and plates left for some considerable time. The food left a lot to be desired. We left Christmas morning after what was supposed to be a lovely time. Never again would we stop at this hotel.

Negative experience: Bit disappointed to be honest... Double room was tiny, and by virtue of having no natural light it felt claustrophobic. Considering the price I paid I would have hoped for and expected better... Staff were excellent, notwithstanding, which mitigated our disappointment

Positive experience: We had a lovely stay except from the last night. About 11pm the pipes started to make a horrible loud noise. It was like a motorcycle was next to the bed. It woke us up and we had had a bottle of wine with our dinner, so not an easy feat. We asked for help at reception and was told that all that could be done was to swap rooms. So at midnight me had to pack all our stuff and move rooms. We could not get back to sleep and had to be checked out the next morning at 10am. Not exactly relaxing.

Negative experience: It should be called Buxton no service hotel. Rooms are hot, being told cannot reduce the temperature but then have to go again after one hour to confront stating unable to leave in the room. Then suddenly the heater can be shut down. When going for leisure facilities no shower towels available, flannels given to dry yourself after swimming. Requested to clean the room on the third day of the stay out the sign on the door before 10am, also told the lady who was making the room and also at the reception. After came from outside in the evening the room was not made towels still in the tub. Went to the reception, Suzanne said we don’t clean the room, when I said it’s my third day already requested twice before leaving for the day she said she can’t do anything as not house keeping staff at the hotel. When requested can I have towels she said no towels available as I mentioned so we shouldn’t be having shower? She said have to find the towels. I said great have to wait another hour and she said I have to serve another customers. Funny enough calling themselves palace hotel should be called no service, no staff, bring your own towels hotel.

Positive experience: Pleasantly surprised a very good hotel conveniently placed near the town centre

Mark Damon 8 months ago

Negative experience: So much potential with this place but being owned by Brittania, it's ruined by among other things, tired and scruffy looking staff that are clearly overworked, undervalued and underpaid. A conversation with the bar man revealed he was doing the work of 3 different people and very much his pleas for support went unheard. The floor manager in his badly fitting suit used the expression 'We're all hands on deck at the moment' to a bewildered elderly couple waiting to be served in the dining room. He then promptly ignored several dirty cluttered tables, physically side stepped a young girl struggling to deal with guests waiting for seats and took his ever so experienced 28 years of age at least into the back staff area to hide out of sight. Clearly not a manager that leads by example or is proactive. The queue for check in was horrendous. I overheard guests complaining about rooms not being ready and having been waiting for over an hour. Two members of the team disappeared without waiting to be relieved on the front desk, leaving the slack and pace to be picked up by one person. That said the guests staying at the hotel were mainly families with unruly kids, coughing, spreading disease and running around making as much of a noise as possible. Sadly it isn't fair practice to issue tasers to the security team for fair use on them so instead we have to just console ourselves as adults to allow them to run amock. The room - Clean, big comfy bed and with a decent fridge, kettle and bath. Plenty of hot water and toiletries. Unfortunately no AC so I was unable to be comfortable in the night, very very suffocating in there. The food - Quite possibly the worst I have ever experienced in a hotel. The chef clearly should have taken on gainful employment as a brickmaker. Both the soup and steak pie resembled fresh concrete. To that end the food was basically bland, tasteless and left out to cremate under the heat lamps for hours at a time. Even the staff didn't want it for staff food when I asked them. Also being told 'We had 80 covers booked in and 40 didn't show up hahaha!' didn't leave much to the imagination much to the amusement of the chefs serving the slop. Breakfast - Decent quantities and selection but again, it was cremated with the ashes ready to be spread in the garden. As for the coffee machine - broken/defective and rady for the trash. The latte and espresso which did eventual flow from the spout tasted like it was fresh out of an ashtray and had the appearance of camel diarrhea. Conclusion - An effort had been made but ultimately the place is outdated and NEEDS essential maintenance carrying out. Being part of Brittania though, that will never happen as the company are notorious for not wanting to spend a penny on major refurbishments or upkeep. This is why as a 4 star hotel it only holds its value for the sake of nostalgia and our of pity for the poor staff working there and not because it's a fantastic place to stay.

Negative experience: Great location but took that long to check in ( over an hour in the queue) that we missed our reservation for lunch. Then the room was okay but the toilet and bathroom door would not close so no privacy and only 1 towel between 2 of us. Carpet was also damp in one corner.

Negative experience: Came to the sauna and steam room as this is the closest one near mine, which was very fairly priced. However, 10 days later got hit with a £60 pound fine for parking there for an hour and a half. I guess it's not so well priced now...

Fantastic experience: We have just enjoyed a lovely couple of days in Buxton. The hotel was spotlessly clean looking stunning with its Christmas decorations. Breakfast was fresh and plenty of choice. The staff were absolutely fabulous, very pleasant and helpful. We’ll definitely be back again later in the year.

Negative experience: Possibly the worst hotel i ever stopped in. Very dated, Have to pay for parking then not enough spaces for the amount of rooms it seems. I was told i could just park in the train station then! Food is terrible. Room was a decent size but a very loud noise coming through the floor, even vibrations at random times in the night, then a fire alarm first thing in the morning. Faulty towers. The location is good though.

Negative experience: This hotel is very deceiving! It looks lovely from the outside and when you first enter , the reception area is lovely - the rooms, shocking! They’re tiny rooms, awful mattress on the bed, the towel left by housekeeping was dirty , the kettle didn’t work.. I didn’t have a breakfast as it didn’t look great , I just had cereal so can’t really say much about that.. when we checked in nothing was said regarding breakfast times etc. I doubt very much I’ll stay again..

Fantastic experience: Wow factor entrance _stunning Xmas tree and chandalier, Chesterfield arm chairs regal staircase.. staff really gone to town on decorations. Trees at every turning! Adore regal atmosphere particularly the staircase, floor to ceiling windows in large warm room with view over pavilion. Bathroom recently renovated tastefully so all fresh, bright, plenty of toiletries & a working warm towel rail. Bed firm and comfy, ample coffee, tea n biscuits in room, chairs tables desks all in great condition in tasteful calm style. Reception Staff were helpful...Suzanne was particularly kind and welcoming which for a solo traveller like me was a real bonus. Bryony, in the spa reception, was an angel too, making my visiting friend and I feel really special. Breakfast was ample and varied.shout out to the mushrooms!! Comfortable seating. Ps. Had a look in the Ballroom...lush...if u love original features and tall ceilings this is for you. Great value for money. Throughly enjoyed my stay...planning the next visit already

Positive experience: This was our base for going to Chatsworth House. Comfy room, decent beer in the bar but felt sorry for the barman, who was very helpful, but had no backup with regards to a one helping with glass clearing and washing. The food was okay for a buffet type self service. Decent choice which was served warmer on the second night. Fairly good breakfast though.

Positive experience: Went on a coach trip with Just Go last week. Lovely looking hotel, beautifully decorated for Xmas. Nice room - very warm. Problems came with very poor service during dinner. Waited over a hour for starter and spent two hours in dining room. On Thursday night the lady opposite me found a long dark hair in her soup. Staff advised but not very interested really. Food was quite good when it was received. Buxton is lovely. A bit disappointed with hotel and could only give this hotel a 'fair' due to service issues. Breakfast was better due to it being self service.

Negative experience: Arrived at hotel and it looked beautiful, checked in at reception for a room we had paid £130 for , very small room with no window so we asked to upgrade , we then paid another £70 for room 108 which we were told was the executive room. This room was larger and with a window. Room was a little dated but still nice. Around 5am there was an awful noise and by 7am I went to talk to the evening porter. He advised to speak to the manager at 9am when she arrived. So at 9am I went to speak with the customer service manager who was very rude and just kept saying it was an old building and what did I expect . She then said I won’t be giving you compensation ( I never mentioned this as we were only there for 1 night ) I was more concerned about the next person going in and it ruining someone else’s stay. She was making out that it wasn’t as bad as I was saying until I told her I had the recordings on my phone that she could listen to. She refused to listen to them and just asked what I wanted from her, again I explained that I just wanted it fixed for the next person. I am not a complainer and I work ina customer service role . Maybe some customer service training is required . I believe it may have been the heating but we are not sure and never had any answers it sounded like a helicopter was landing in our room from 5am until 8.10am absolutely dreadful. The room next to us also complained

Positive experience: The foyer to the hotel had a lovely festive feel in snow covered Buxton. We had to register our car number plate and were charged £5 for overnight parking. Upon arrival in our alloted room, we discovered it had not been serviced and thus we had to go for a cold late afternoon walk while the matter was addressed. The room, when finally got into it, was warm, large and comfortable. Breakfast had great choices and ample quantities of food. The hotel staff we met were functional rather than friendly. Overall, the hotel represented good value for money.

Positive experience: Lovely hotel a pity there was a staff shortage. Meal times were chaotic, queuing for food and also the bar. There was 4 coaches in when we visited and only 1 man running the bar which wasn't ideal.

Negative experience: Service on low level, outdated room, low quality of food at buffet, no winter service which turned out in guests slipping. This hotel is for seen me once and never again.

Negative experience: I took my mum for a spa day for her 70th here. There had been maintainance work which they assured me had been finished. I spent the whole of my treatments listening to drilling and banging below me and got really upset as it was supposed to be a special day for my mum. I asked the manager for a refund as we were going to leave, she refused this but assured me she would phone me within a week with a resolution. That was 3 weeks ago and I've heard nothing so am now making a formal complaint. Really upset as it was a special birthday for my mum and I wish I'd spent the money doing something else! Wouldn't return again!

Negative experience: I'm a solo traveller. My room was clean but had no window so it was a bit claustrophobic. It was cold, the heating wasn't working, I reported it to reception and was informed the problem would be addressed. It wasn't so my first night there was not pleasant. I reported it again in the morning and was told I should have informed reception! The problem was resolved for my second night and the room was warm. I believe some rooms were fine but I'd paid the same as other people on my coach plus a single supplement so I feel the standard of rooms should be similar.

Positive experience: Recently returned from the Palace hotel on Sunday 11th nov on arrival with coach trip on the 8th greeted by receptionist Ethan who was very nice and friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Well done Ethan. Bedroom was lovely and clean beds comfy and view from room 315 was also lovely. Found food was satisfactory considering what we paid to stay there. Found hotel was better than I expected after reading previous reviews all areas were very clean. Only thing I didn’t like was the self service buffet area found it got too crowded around it people of certain ages struggling to-get by carrying hot bowls of soup etc I felt it was an accident waiting to happen felt it was unsafe procedure for hotel to implement even on a morning the toaster would be situated in same area as where the queue would be to get one’s hot food from. Think the hotel need to re think this. Well done to all staff who worked extremely hard in a very busy dining room.

Fantastic experience: Really liked this place. Good value for money. It’s a historic building which has undergone some extensive renovation. The public areas are stunning and my room was clean and functional. The only surprise was that complimentary bottles of “Harrogate”spring water was in the room

Fantastic experience: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Palace Hotel. As a middle aged couple we appreciated the decor, the comfort and the attentive staff during our stay. The room was a standard double but included the double bed and two singles - it was huge! The bathroom let the room down though, a gelly style bathroom - one long corridor of a room with a toulet squeezed onto the end which we were unable to sit on as our knees were restricted by the end of the bath. Only suitable for short adults or children. Our only other gripe was the price of drinks in the bar, somewhat overpriced for the standard drinks. The food was hot and fresh and we also enjoyed our breakfast the next day. Facilities were good throughout and the hotel was quiet and peaceful.

Fantastic experience: Wonderful half term holiday experience at the Palace Buxton hotel. The MAIN reason for the review was how wonderful Jane the receptionist was. Whenever you get awesome customer service I always want to ensure management somehow know what a gem of an employee they have. She's a keeper! We had the compact room from our own choice and it would be a very tight squeeze for our small family. I asked Jane if there was any chance she could get us extra duvets etc and she tried multiple avenues even though the hotel was fully booked and house keeping was closed. I never got the extra duvets I needed but I could genuinely see how hard she tried and she was genuinely upset she couldn't fulfil the request The pool area was wonderful although a £6 charge for adults our family and kids thoroughly enjoyed it. The extra floats and armbands on hand to use for free were awesome! For what we paid for a night and the fun and things to do in Buxton we were very pleased but Jane needed a special shout out. God bless you and your family! Love from the Abdullah family

Positive experience: Lovely Staff, fantastic Chef serving gluten free options always, can't fault this hotel at the price, Jane was fabulous as a receptionist, very helpful and attentive and Amos was great in the evening, helpful and knowledgeable but all the staff we're great especially the lady from the kitchen who sorted my gluten free toast in the morning and in the evening for the pate. Simply 'great staff'. Thank you. Tom and Rie Casey.

Fantastic experience: A very grand building, the room was clean and huge! Great value given what we paid. Room well stocked with tea/coffee. Breakfast was fab. Well placed location wise just a short walk into Buxton Town. Was almost put off by some of the reviews on here, I would suggest this is a reflection of the picky clientèle rather than the venue itself.

Positive experience: Amazing location but the amenities which you should get at this tariff aren't available, The room I stayed in had a leakage from the bathroom ceiling, also make sure the pool and spa are operating before you make a reservation.

Positive experience: Work event but room was nice, clean and large bathroom. Shower was over the bath but it was fine. Food was good and they serve Starbucks which is a bonus. Well positioned close to the station and easy to walk into Town.

Positive experience: Part of a coach party of 30. Beautiful hotel. Unfortunately the spa pool and beauty all closed for our visit. Lovely self service breakfast with assistance from waiting staff. Delicious choice of self service evening meals with no waiting staff. Comfy well stocked bar and seating area. Good service from Dan I think, Tuesday afternoon. Contactless payment only. Our twin room was in the attic, 3rd floor with lift, strange bedroom layout. Comfy beds. I know they have beautiful bed rooms in the hotel, we just didn't get lucky.

Negative experience: Beautiful common area interior such as the reception, lounge and bar area (sofa chairs look elegant and feel comfortable). Great view of the grand staircase! Guest service is fine as did not really have much encounter but reception and bar area staff were friendly. The room, the most used and important bit when you stay in a hotel: - outdated. - no fridge. - hard matress. - hard pillows. - electrical sockets are limited. —-> if you have a machine you need when sleeping, ie. Portable Oxygen, you need at least 3m charger for you to use it as the power socket at the bedside is a old type socket! (Relevant several decades ago) - toilet barely flushed and at one point made a scary gurgling sound! - WIFI IN THE ROOMS IS NOT INCLUDED! You need to pay £7 per night per device! Will I stay here again? Probably not, UNLESS, they remodel as they say they do with the SPA when we visited. This was also a let down as there was no notice re this.

Fantastic experience: Stayed here for a Saturday night due to an event nearby. Excellent location and splendid hotel. Staff helpful and polite and room had everything needed.

Positive experience: James, the pianist, is a star of the Friday and Saturday evenings. It was a pleasure to meet him and listen to his playing. The staff of the hotel is very kind and friendly. Our room was clean, but it is quite outdated. The bathroom was also clean but made from cheap materials and doesn't look good. Breakfast is very simple and not much choice for people with allergies/intolerancs. It's probably better to go to one of many cafe shops nearby. Very dog friendly place.

Negative experience: Arrived early, wasn't helpful with an early check in even with offer of payment. Charge to park there! Spa Hotel!!!! Not a chance of using Any of the facilities including NO POOL! Don't book here, CANNOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK.

Mark Dore 11 months ago

Positive experience: A grand old hotel that would have been wonderful in its day but is now a bit tired and showing it's age. The rooms are clean but they are a bit cramped. Some guests were complaining about the long walk to some rooms so if this is an issue for you make sure you ask for a room near the main stairs and lift Self service breakfast was good and plentiful but I wish they had proper tea mugs as there cups are tiny

Fantastic experience: My birthday night away. Stunning place! Great location. Amazing rooms. Hoping to get married here, it impressed me that much! Have recommended it to family and friends. Definitely coming back!

Olivia Betson 11 months ago

Negative experience: Just arrived, room is sweltering! The window only opens about 5cm. Bathroom is disgusting, bath is peeling away. Couldn’t park anyway at the hotel so had to travel around for about 10 minutes to find a parking space. Plug socket is at the other end of the room, away from the bed, on the floor and only 1 plug socket. Booked 2 nights here as nice getaway with my husband and I regret it. Wish I could get my money back and go else where. Not worth £200 at all

Fantastic experience: I recently had the pleasure of attending an academic session at the illustrious Palace Hotel in Buxton, and I must say, it was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I stepped into this iconic establishment, I was transported into a world of timeless elegance and grandeur. The historic architecture, with its stately façade and opulent interiors, immediately set the tone for an unforgettable experience. The conference facilities were impeccably organized, providing the perfect blend of modern conveniences with old-world charm. The staff's attention to detail was remarkable; they were courteous, efficient, and catered to every need with a gracious smile. The ambiance of the hotel exudes sophistication, with every corner brimming with character—from the grand staircases to the artfully designed lounges. The Palace Hotel is a gem that harmonizes heritage with impeccable service. It was the perfect setting for an enriching academic event, and I am already looking forward to returning, whether for leisure or another professional engagement. This is a place where history meets luxury in the most spectacular way.

Positive experience: The hotel rooms were spacious and clean. Location was great round the corner from the train station, and a short walk into town. Service was good from the kitchen making sure to cater to allergy requirements. Long waits for your evening meal. Nice food though. What let this hotel down for me was £7 a day for WiFi meaning a 5 day stay would cost £35. And £5 a day to park your car. Beware of the hidden extra costs.

H Langdon 1 year ago

Negative experience: Very disappointing for the price. The spa was nice but the food was very poor, as was the attitude of the staff (cold and unhelpful). I wouldn't say this is a five star hotel, it's like a Premier Inn with a spa.
